Class is super easy. The exam questions are pulled straight from lecture and the readings are super short. The only downsides are the tedious papers (2 5-7 pagers in the semester) and the fact that she refuses to post the lecture slides on BrightSpace. At any rate though, if you need to knock out a humanities requirement, take this class with her.

Her class is so fun! She has personality and loves it when you speak up, so don't be afraid to. The only thing that hurts people's grades is the harsh grader she uses on the paper, but she allows you to submit for a regrade. She's notorious for handing back tons of points. People who got 85s will resubmit and get As. Study the lecture notes!!

I brought one of my out-of-state psych major friends to this class and she pointed out that Dr. Chase might be on the autism spectrum, so don't be too creeped out when she gets a little weird sometimes. I really liked this class and it's basically take notes and study and you'll have an A; do nothing and you'll get an F-.

brother, go to class for this one. you have to. take notes and pay attention and you will be fine, but i would rec taking history of rock with the other prof that teaches this. she gives out the test bank and she lets you take notes on your laptop. sometimes she would be a bit passive aggressive but understandable bc no one pays attention

Professor Chase is a solid professor who has incredibly knowledgable in her field. This class was so easy. Just make sure you take notes in class because she doesn't post her lectures online. There's two tests (open note), a 5 page research paper, and a final. Listened to tons of cool music. Can be a little passive aggressive but super nice overall

Should be an interesting course, but she makes it all memorization because of the slides that she just reads off of. Not posting them isn't even the issue, it's the fact that she can't teach the material and just says what she wants to say and expects us to memorize all of that.

content: memorize slides to ace exams, mandatory attendance and she is NOT remorseful, no essay rubric, lecture slides are never posted professor: I can't tell if she enjoys teaching or if she can't tolerate students, which explains condescending tone and limited student participation. You feel like an inconvenience when asking her a question.

Class is copying off powerpoint (not posted) and listening to music. No homework and open note tests. 2 papers, 2 exams and 4 quizzes but pretty hard. Points taken off papers for things not on rubric. Prof would be passive aggressive abt lack of participation, but otherwise ok. Pretty low effort/fun class but not as easy to get high grade as hoped.

She makes rock music very woke in a way that is offputting to students who just want a fun class. Also weirdly tough grading on the essays. She taught hip hop and rap in the later part of the year and ignored actual rock music for some reason. Always in a bad mood and will make it your problem. No phones/laptops. She's awful compared to Gunderman

Terrible instructor. Her lectures were outright awful. The amount of content that is required to know for the exams is more than my organic chemistry class, how is this possible? Everyone around me had to cheat. This is not what a 1650 level MUSIC class should be like. She kind of just gave up at the end, honestly, with this class, I would too.

Professor Chase is definitely a bit odd - makes it very clear that she does not care about her students in a way that is surprisingly honest. She gave up on the last two weeks of class because she didn't want to be there (openly stated). The content is pretty interesting. The essays are graded more harshly than in any of my English major classes

Amazing class. 2 papers, 1 midterm, 4 quizzes, and a final. All assessments open note. No technology is allowed in class, so you have to handwrite notes and type them up after class. Beware that the graduate grader grades the papers (NOT the professor or TA), but other than that super fun class even tho prof Chase was not always excited to be there

Very fun class I loved it, and Professor Chase is so interesting. The random attendance and no technology are kinda annoying, but it's okay because the course material makes up for it. I'm sad we never touched on Hamilton though. Whoever is the grader is insane and very picky when you miss the tiniest bit of information in an essay.

Dr. Chase is passionate about what she teaches and returns the respect you show to her. Exams are open note+not cumulative. You'll do well if you pay attention in lecture. They hire graders to look at your exams. If you miss a lot of points, be diligent about asking Dr. Chase about it so 1. you can see what you did wrong or 2. she can look it over.

DO NOT BRING YOUR LAPTOP TO CLASS: she WILL rant about how she is the only woman of color you will ever have as a professor at Vanderbilt and reprimand you for not respecting her the same as her white counterparts. People (and myself) don't like her personality...she just yearns for class participation. You DO have to study for her exams... pure memorization of LITTLE details. MUST come to class and MUST take notes...but the content is fun. For me, this was a good break from STEM classes...but you still have to study to do well.

Go to every class and take notes: WORD FOR WORD, of the slides. Tests are online & open note, and the final is NOT cumulative. There are one or two papers, but it's all about music, so it's not horrible. If you can attend every class and stay awake... you're good! No technology. Extra credit available. Try to participate to avoid her attitude.

The exams require exact memorization, and if you don't interpret the material as she expects, you lose points. The grading is inconsistent, and there's no clear rubric. Fun content but way too much work for an MUSL course. Tests involve recognizing songs, memorizing artists, producers, managers, and historical backgrounds. You also loose points for spelling which didn't help. She also seemed to not be too interested in the content. And spent too much time talking about hip hop in a rock class.

Prof. Chase was actually a pretty okay prof. She has a bit of a temper. The online exams were pretty extremely rushed despite getting 2 hours to take them. With that being said, the class was pretty easy. Tips to succeed: Transfer all of your notes to a google docs to be able to search up answers during test and don't waste time on the hw readings.

Extremely stressful for a music class. Tests are take-home but extremely rushed, so you need to take great notes. The grader is very picky about what earns full credit. Papers are graded super harshly, and they don't really give feedback explaining the grade, so it's hard to know what to improve. Be prepared to spend more time than expected.
