He speeds through powerpoint presentations and dismisses class after 15 minutes. He does upload them online, though. He grades REALLY hard, though, is very picky. Counted a question wrong on my exam because I did it the wrong way (but got the right answer). I don't suggest him.
Goofy guy, but really nice. I took elementary geometry with him and he was very gracious on partial points on tests. Kinda easily pushed around by the class, but stands his ground when he needs to. If you do the homework and show up to class you can pass.
Good teacher, difficult course. He does a lot of examples in class which is good for those of us who have a little difficulty with the material. Tests are difficult but not impossible. Study, come to class, and pass.
Brock is a pretty decent guy. As far as a person and professor I can't really complain. His teaching style is very organized and easy to follow. He grades kind of hard though as far as tests, but as long as you do his optional homework (which I didn't as you can see by my grade) you have a really good shot at passing.
Brock is very intelligent and knows his subject well. However, he is not the most insightful guy as far as teaching. He does provide a few examples from each chapter, but his quizzes and exams are ridiculous. He will send out a review, for example, that might cover a few basic concepts and then give a quiz that is unrealistically difficult.
Great Instructor, but the tests are difficult.
Easy to understand and teaches so anybody can understand.
love this man!
Brock aka Chuck Norris is a great prof. Always there to help when needed.
His hand writing is vry easy to read. He gives out reviews prior to every test and goes threw it in class. Hes very laid back and easy to talk to during his office hours. He allows test corrections for every test which is pretty nice. The homework is minimal and he usually does a couple of them during class. I would highly recommend him.
best math teacher
Very good teacher. Very funny, makes class fun and is easy to understand. Laid back and easy going. I highly recommend him.
Brock's Cal 3 class was okay. The lectures don't help too much and he always ends class early or cancels it. We only had discussion about 3 or 4 times. Didn't grade hard on tests, and you got to do TEST CORRECTIONS for half your points back. HW wasn't too hard, just go to the learning center. Tests were similar to review. Final was pretty tough.
Absolutely the best math teacher I've ever taken*I'm getting a math minor so I've taken a few*. He will let you retake a test where you can receive half the points missed. I made an A- my test grades were 52 *the average for the first test was a 40 something * but then the rest were 97 and 96 .
Lots of homework in short time period, no attendance, gives reviews before tests that are somewhat helpful. Tests are hard but he will let you do corrections for half credit back. He strayed away from departmental final and did his own thing... Tough teacher. I would not take him again.
He is great at explaining and is very clear. The homework can be a tad tough at times but if you go to class, ask him for help if you need, or go to the SI sessions if you need extra practice there's not reason why you shouldn't get an A
Explains and teaches problems well. He tells you how he want your answers so if you don't do it like that he will take off points. But very good teacher and has a sarcastic sense of humor. Good class
He's one of the best professor in Math Department. The class is not that bad at all; if you study hard enough you will get an A. Also do your homework because it helps a lot with the further understanding of the material. He gives partial credit on your exam, so however many points you missed you can half of it up by doing a test corrections.
Brock is awesome. His office hours are so useful if the homework is unclear. Redo homework to study for tests and you will do well.
he is a good teacher, but grades extremely hard. Usually gives you a second chance at the exam by doing corrections for some points back
Took Brock for Proofs during the summer. He was unprepared for the class but did a great job anyways. He followed the book and took all his test/HW problems from it as well. He grades very easily and can answer most questions you have. Don't slack and think it will be a breeze, give it your all and get an A! Most of my classmates did that and got B
He's a chill dude who is super chill and specific about what he talks about. He makes the class easy and makes sure that you have every chance to learn the material. He works with you well and is really easy to go talk to and get help from during his office hours. He's a funny dude in class and is very clear about how to solve the diff eq.
Brock is one of the best professors in the math department. He breaks down concepts so they are easy to understand and writes examples clearly on the board. His problem solving processes are always straightforward. He also let my class do test corrections for half the credit back and opened up the webwork homework again at the end of the semester.
Really nice guy and gives a lot of chances for success but the course is hard. Homework is worth 15% and keeping up with it is the best way to prepare for tests (which add up to the other 85%). He gives out test reviews but the homework is more aligned with what you'll see. They're pretty tough. Although on some tests he will allow corrections.
Best professor for all of the differential equations classes! And calculus! He gives test corrections and really cares about his students. Take him!
The professor was a fair teacher and grader. He was pretty understanding, somewhat lenient, and helpful. Had a few friends that didnt click with him, but they were looking for an easy A. Honestly, if you do your work, pay attention, show up, and ask questions - youll be fine.
He's understanding and will work with you! No calculators or formula charts though so get ready for that...
He is a generous grader and lectures very well. Attending the lectures and putting in the work to do the homework should guarantee an A for the class.
Tough grader but in fairness he allows test corrections and can replace lowest test grade with final grade. Reopens the homework at the end of the semester to improve your score.
If you can teach yourself the math you don't need to go to class unless there is a quiz. Calculators are not allowed in the class so Mr. Erwin lets students leave the answer in an unsimplified form. You can always email him with problems/questions and he answers promptly and is very helpful.
he gives a lot of homework to go along with the lectures. fair grader/generous with partial credit, reopens homework at the end of semester.
Very cool guy. Very helpful during office hours. Hands out & works through reviews before tests. Allows corrections to get half your points back. Reopens the homework before the final. Pay attention to problems gone over in class- many times the exact same problems ended up on the tests. DO the homework. Repetition & practice will help big time.
He's a great Calculus II teacher. He provides plenty of examples (although most are from the book), but he also is great at answering questions both in class and during office hours. I'd say he is easily the safest and best Calculus II teacher at Texas Tech University. He despises cheating and will call out when people do it. Pay attention in class
I was nervous about taking Math Proofs, but Brock Erwin made it so bearable! His homework is short and to the point, but still gives you good practice. He is very approachable when you ask him questions both in and out of class. His tests were similar to his reviews. At times he'd go a bit too fast with his lectures, but that is my only complaint!
Brock Erwin is one of the best math professors i have ever had. His DE 2 class is really challenging and will put you through a bit of studying. I recommend taking him for any math class. His homework is hard and he grades a bit harshly. He despises cheating and will call you out if you do. overall amazing lectures and animated.
Took him for DiffEq2, he really makes you learn the material but explains it in such a great way. Will curve if necessary but majority of the class will understand it so be mindful. Cool guy, had a great time in his class.
Without a doubt the best professor at TTU. Make your life easy and go to his lectures, they are all you need to make an A in his class. I've had pretty bad professors that I stopped going to class after a couple of weeks, but he is not the professor to do that with. You will save so much time later studying for exams by never skipping his class.
Going to office hours are important, he's helpful during those, sort of. He doesn't really enter that many assignments in the grade book either so you kind of have to do well on every exam because the homework barely counts for anything. Homework and gateway exams only. Doesn't offer extra credit
The best math teacher I have ever had. Teaches clearly and always is concerned if you don't understand something. Higly recommended.
His homework is intense. He sets you up to fail. He doesn't record lectures and there was no in person option. He answers his emails rude.
Just reads off slideshow that arent updated with correct information. Answers emails rudely. Gives reviews with no answer key that dont prepare for the test. Explains through words without showing the work first. Im an A student and I am barely passed.
I wish I had a good experience with him. I went to every lecture, asked questions, did all the homework and nothing helped. All he did was read from powerpoints. The exams are SO different from all of the homeworks/reviews, it is not helpful. He is rude in emails and expects you to understand everything he says the first time Not a helpful prof.
He's apparently terrible adapting to online classes, and doesn't care about your success. Bad character, extremely rude when you need assistance. The homework is meaningless with his lectures, let alone the test review. If you're registering for classes and it's between him and a 6am class consider yourself a morning person or try another semester.
His lectures are very clear and he lets you stay after to ask questions or you can ask them during class. Homework is due the day of class pretty much every class and some of it is pretty tough if you aren't math savvy. Tests aren't too bad but I would definitely recommend going to every lecture and taking notes otherwise your grade will feel it.
Rudest prof I have ever had. He is so insensitive and not understanding. He also teaches at an extremely fast rate, and doesn't care if students are falling behind. I promise you, just take another prof with this class. Tests are super hard but the homework is doable. Majority of the class failed his final sooo avoid his class :)
Professor Erwin is a bad professor to be learning Business Calc from, he doesnt help when you ask undermines you anytime you ask a question thats hes covered or if you answer one of his questions wrong hes always got a smart remark about it. His lectures are poor. I advise not taking him.
lectures are always let out early & we only go over like 2 problems every class. You'd be better off skipping class & just going to the SI. There are many errors on the exams & some of the correct answers weren't even in the answer choices. probably going to have to take this class again but not with him. tests are 85%, Hw is 15% of your grade
Exams are 85% of your grade and are harder then other professors. Homework is 15% however there is a lot and if your late, your not getting those points back. Many errors on his exam, he clearly made it himself and it wasnt verified by anyone. I would avoid his class unless you want a unreasonable challenge.
Professor Erwin is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. There is a lot of homework, but it helps so much when it comes to preparing you for the exam. He also lets you do an exam review for each exam, and you can earn up to 5 bonus points. I recommend sitting up front, and showing up to class.
Teaches wayyy to fast and doesnt explain how he gets any numbers he just writes stuff on the board and expects you to know it, also very standoffish
Brock Erwin is the worst math teacher I have ever had. He doesn't explain concepts clearly and is rude to students. If you miss a class, there are videos given which are not as helpful but they are still there. Heard nothing but bad things about him this year, and I 100% are with everything bad said. For the sake of your GPA, don't take this class.
Overall the class is pretty easy as long as you do the work. He gives 5 points of extra credit on the tests if you do the review. He posts lecture notes online in case you miss a class or need to go over something again. He also responds to emails quickly!
Absolutely horrible is very hard. Doesnt teach
He has very clear power points and posts his lectures online if you miss class, or need to review. The homework is easy as long as you pay attention in class. He offers reviews for the tests as well that give you up to 5 bonus points if you complete them. he responds quickly to emails and explains things well.
rude and does not explain material well. He makes sarcastic comments to students i did not learn anything in this class all year.
He makes the class definitely do-able. Him as a professor is not the best though. He is not patient at all and will get mad if there is no class participation but also gets mad if you get the answer wrong. He does not like to do the same question twice.
Mr. Erwin was the the worst teacher I have ever had to deal with. He teaches the class so fast as if we have already seen the material before. He tries to get students involved into the work, but when no one knows the answer, he gets very frustrated. Mr. Erwin has YouTube videos online, but they weren't the best to try and learn the subject over.
Does not look like he cares about his students and just wants the paycheck, classes were cut short way too often. Does a few problems in class then expects us to do an entire homework over the material. Had to get help elsewhere to receive an A in his class. Wouldnt advise taking him.
Erwin was just hard to communicate with, cut classes short a lot, and doesn't explain very well. He goes super fast so be prepared. kinda has an attitude when asking for help which is frustrating when I'm trying to just pass the class:)
Brock was a pretty good professor, he explained things well and did his best to answer any student questions. His exams and homework aren't too bad but progressively get harder as the year goes on. If you go to the SI sessions before exams you should be okay. Given that he teaches a very large class I think he does a pretty good job.
It is very clear that he knows what he is teaching. He does a good job of explaining each chapter and answering questions. Although he is tough on his students, he is fair. As long as you attend class and pay attention you should be fine. My biggest complaint was having 20 questions of homework due every Friday and Monday.
Prof Erwin does not care about his students. One time I went into his office and he seemed frustrated I was even there trying to ask him a question. He does not teach the material very well. Also, if you show up to class, you better stay the entire lecture or else he throws a tantrum. Definitely stay away from this geek if you can.
The SIs for this class is the only reason I passed so make sure you go to those. homework is hard, tests were easier. Lots of concept Qs on tests so make sure you understand the material. also, brock gets mad if a student asks a question that's already been asked so dont do that. on exam 2 there were many errors but i dont think it was his fault.
He decided to not talk through a microphone, even though we had the biggest lecture hall in the building. After showing up to IT Sessions, I learned that TA's are so much more helpful and better teachers than the professor himself. Was sassy to anyone that asked questions, 0/10 wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy.
Good at explaining and helping understand the concepts of what he's teaching. One of the best Math professors I've ever had. If you'd like to speak with him outside class, save yourself the time and don't email him. It will come off as rude and dismissive to many and oftentimes seeing him after class would get your question answered quicker.
Overall, the class wasn't too difficult. If you come ready to take notes and pay attention in class, you will pass. Examples in class are very similar to the homework. He also uploads test reviews, which are very similar to the exams. He will spend days before exams going over any questions people might have.
If you can avoid taking this professor you should. He grades so strictly, forgetting one thing on a problem will lose you 7 points. He is also rude and hard to access, it's nearly impossible to get help from him and he acts like all questions are dumb questions. Not good for teaching basic classes if you want a solid foundation for upper levels.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Constantly accused students of cheating if he didnt understand their work; ie. I didnt show my work for simple math, got accused of cheating and got a zero for the test just because he thinks college students are cheating with simple math questions. Id highly advise to anybody to not take his class.
I don't think I've ever taken a class where the teacher assigned so much homework oh my god. We had homework almost ever night if not two assignments. His tests are stupidly difficult, if you didn't solve the equation in the way he taught it he would accuse you of cheating and take off lots of points for it. Good lecturer though I guess.
HORRID. This man would take away 14 points for one question on a ten question test. He would constantly accuse students of cheating without any evidence. He would legit look at the class and tell us if we went to a tutor for help he would drop our grade cause we had to figure it out on our own. Avoid him at all costs or your gpa will suffer.
Didn't have a bad encounter with him. Very nice and taught the material well. I took it during the summer, so some stuff was not taught, and I had to teach myself but other than that I liked him as a professor.
This professor sucked, honestly thank goodness I took him before he became more strict. He used to not grade you're work but it seems like that has changed maybe because his classes became smaller but overall this guy is tough, hw every other day which was super long, but if you manage to get an A on everything than you should be okay.
Homework does not represent what was in the lecture, and if you did not understand pre-cal before do not take his class. I had a bad pre-cal teacher in high school and now this is just making me want to switch majors.
Watch he would blame you with cheating for no reasons at all
I have never wrote a review on here before, but the reviews claiming he is a rude professor are absolutely true. I did not struggle in the class and found the material easy, but this professor gave me attitude every email or interaction I had with him when asking questions. Seems like he does not enjoy teaching and should find another profession.
Is receptive to questions and will explain a concept if asked to elaborate. His tests are pretty difficult, and he takes off points for the smallest reasons. He's also the most paranoid man I've ever met in my life when it comes to cheating. Told the class I was in that if he could bet every dollar he had on if we cheated, he'd be a millionaire.
Do not take him if you have other options. He is a hard grader and assumes everybody is cheating. Pay attention in every lecture and actually do the homework if you want any idea of what is going on. There is homework every night that takes up to 2 hours. Do the corrections!!!!
Just no, don't put yourself through this pain. This man is not a vibe, very paranoid and mean. An instructor I recommend is Liang Chaun, 10/10 he is amazing, unlike brocky-poo overhere. Save yourself money, time, and tears, and do not take this class with this instructor.
Very basic math class. If you are good at math and listen you will do fine. If not I know people have troubles with him.
If you struggle with math I would recommend a professor who doesn't get mad when you ask questions! Tests were nothing like the review and you will have lots of homework. I made 100's on every homework assignment and failed nearly every test. Now I have to retake the course again:)
Absolutely awful. If you're looking for a professor that gets mad when you ask questions, look no further. Not only that, he will accuse you of cheating if you solve a problem any other way than his own made up formulas. he drones through examples all class long and doesnt teach a thing from the $100 textbook. youll have several hours of homework.
the worst and meanest professor i've ever had. anytime someone asked a question he'd get an attitude and be really mean about it. take anyone else but him. the tests are hard and not like the homework. he obviously hates his job and life and you can tell by the way he treats students.
This instructor was very harsh when grading tests. When I had a technical difficulty during a test, my grade reflecting the problems that I couldn't control. This instructor did not allow other methods for solving the problems to be used. Do not take this class!
You will need to devote time to study to do well in this class. That being said, he was a lenient grader and would give out partial credit when he could.
Took this course over the summer. I was probably one of very few students who watched all of the provided video lectures, but they carried me through the class. Homework is done over webwork, but exams are done on paper and scanned (thank god). My only warning is that the summer course pace + asynch nature means it is easy to fall behind.
Avoid at all costs, I made a 15 on a test while getting 100 on all the homework assignments. He the accused me of cheating and gave me a 0. Not sure how I would cheat my way to a 15. Takes points off for anything and everything and if you use any other method to solve then your getting points off. Dont take his class.
every small request of generosity or clarity. resulted in a narcissistic reply, belittling me as a student. Each response leaving me to feel as if i cant go to this teacher for anything without being patronized and insulted. He definitely needs to work on approachability to his students to have a more supportive environment.
Terrible professor, does not explain things well. Overwhelms you with information in one lecture. Do not recommend.
Worst professor I think I have ever had in my life. He doesn't teach, nor explain anything. He skips through slides, and acts bothered/annoyed if you have any sorts of questions. He then gets mad when tests grades are bad because it's "our faults as students". I've made all A's until this class. Do not recommend to my worst enemy.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!! I'm serious if you want to pass do NOT take his class. He goes over the material super quick not going into detail at all as if he expects you to already know the information. Grades the tests SUPER hard and will assume that you're cheating if you don't show work. Reprimands you if you do your work in a different method than him.
This professor doesn't teach very good and states that he went over the material for the homework in class, but when you go to do the homework none of it is the same as what he taught. I do not recommend taking this class with him because you will fail if you don't go to the SI sessions or find outside videos to help.
Be prepared to move at a fast pace, Sometimes he will extend the homework but that is extremely rare.
Brock is the man, getting hammered at the Texas tech UT game, wreckem
Horrible, just horrible.
Very judgmental during lectures. Had to teach myself the whole class because he does things complicated when it is super simple. Also, do not go on your phone during a lecture because he will yell at you. Very unfair grader when it comes to exams.
Avoid at all costs. He does not teach/explain anything but expects you to know all material. He frequently messes up or confuses him self when doing example problems. He's rude & will call students out for looking at their phone/walking out of class. He has anger issues.
Absolutely terrible. More kids drop his class/fail than actually pass. Not sure how he is still a professor even after shouting at multiple kids.
He does have a clear attitude but the class is relatively easy to pass if you prepare for the tests properly. The homework did get tedious sometimes because it didn't always match the lectures, but he prepared us for it and went over homework problems in class. Tests are all no-calculator no multiple choice and he grades hard, but review matched.
Did well in this class but took a lot of effort. 3 tests that are each 20% of your grade and final is 25% but replaces lowest exam grade. So much homework for only 15% of total grade but it helps you understand the material if you do it. The prof was not nice so definitely go to SI sessions if you're confused - don't get behind or you won't pass.
The homework is very tedious and is so hard that it barely helps with the tests. The homework was miscoded a bit, but he gave us extra points to compensate (I got 104/100 points for the homework). I never attended this course's sessions, but I wish I did because he was not very good at teaching. WATCH THE VIDS ON THE HW!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER (im a pre-med junior with a previous 4.0 GPA, only class ive even failed) will end up teaching yourself NO extra credit NO curved grade NOT approachable HARD GRADER, EVEN IF YOUR ANSWER IS RIGHT; must solve it HIS way and show ALL work, even then he will ALWAYS take off points brags about dropout and fail rate SI tough better
Unprofessional, and rude. I would ask a simple question based off of confusion and get the most unprofessional and rude response back.
I really like the professor; I find him quite funny, though others might not agree. The class was very straightforward, and he has a clear teaching style. Curves tests. Syllabus is similar to any other math class at Tech. If you have a question, he will answer it directly. Some might say he's rude, but he's just straightforward.
Clear from the beginning. Did a thorough job of explaining grading criteria and making himself accessible to us. Despite some challenges, by visiting during office hours and going the extra mile, I was able to pull through with an A. Highly recommend Mr. Erwin and recommend him. If you put in the work, you have nothing to worry about in his class.
I was a 4.0 student before this class. The professor didn't teach, was very rude, and would skip over material. He always was annoyed or irritated if you asked him questions. I know other students who all 4.0's before this class. Stay away from his class. I'd never take him again.
Grades pretty harshly, but offers test corrections and lets you know how you will be graded.
Terrible experience. Frequently gave unclear lectures and would skip over steps entirely. Take anyone else.
Beware of brock
Strict grader on tests but only accepts right answer if taught the way he teaches. offers makeups for tests so he was cool. attendance mandatory but not strict just needed to check in but i recommend going because you will fall behind. Uses 90$ proctorio course
Erwin was great for Calc 1. I had taken AP Calc in high school, so I already knew a bit of the material, which helped my grade, but it was not the only reason I did well. Erwin is a great explainer and is readily available via email outside of class. Most of the negative reviews here are from people who failed because of their lack of effort
I once dropped the pre-calculus class he taught and subsequently passed both trigonometry and calculus 1 with a B+. The fact that having him for pre-calculus was worse than both another available calc feeder course and calculus 1 itself is reason enough to avoid Professor Erwin at all costs. Additionally, he is very smug and hates questions.
Difficult class, but using tools like Unstuckstudy and attending SI sessions helped me stay on top of the material. The professor's teaching style isn't the best, so be prepared to put in extra effort if you want to succeed.
An amazing professor who teaches a very hard subject which is why there's a lot of low reviews. He's a great teacher, he offers corrections, extra credit for attending class, and drops your lowest grades. His teaching style is one where he wants you to learn it meaning, this is not a class for an easy A. He's always available if you need extra help
Great professor! Practice exam and homework questions line up well with actual exams. Lectures are fairly interactive and he posts his notes, but going to class helps a lot. And he gives a heads up on questions to pay attention to that may be on the exam.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE! I had to drop this class last semester due to having an F in the class, nothing made sense. Fast forward to this semester and I ended Calculus 1 with a 117% in the class. This guy is a terrible teacher and there are no redeeming qualities for him.
I had Erwin for both Cal 1 and 2. He was great in both, and I am sad I won't have him for Cal 3. He explains stuff well and often goes over problems that are on exams. His practice tests are simply the exam he gave to his last class, so the material is very similar. He does grade harshly for obvious mistakes, but it is usually only a point or so.
The worst professor, he doesn't explain well the concepts; deducts points out of nowhere, actually really rude. Would never recommend taking a class with this “professor”
Worst prof I had. Day one, he said half the class would drop/fail & told us to leave. He's power-trippy & talks down to students. Emails were met with rudeness. Doesn't care about success. As I turned in my final, he stomped his foot & counted down from 10. No matter how strong you are in math or respectful, he's cold, condescending, & impossible.
I've had pleasure of having Mr. Erwin teach both my Calc 1 & 2, If you're a STEM major, I'd highly recommend selecting him as your lecturer for Calc. His teaching is very coherent and he allows students to ask questions/voice concerns about upcoming midterms/exams. BTW ignore the reviews for MATH1330, they're intellectually adjacent to a carrot.
Horrible professor. Very condescending, doesn't like being asked any questions, hard to come up to ask for help. Swears he did examples and that we don't need outside help, but when doing assignments, no examples coordinate with the ones on the assignment. Will 1000% think you are cheating even if it's basic math. Gives zeros, even if it's correct.
He goes very off the book. Easy to get distracted, but if you talk to him after class/office hours you will 100% understand whatever it is. Grades off what he wants shown, AI or other videos online might not show exactly what he wants, so definitely go to class when its a test review week. Thorough with emails and quick responding.
Brock isn't the worst professor in the world like some people say, but he definitely isn't the best. His teaching style does not fit everyone and will confuse some people. The tests are difficult and not multiple choice. He does do a decent job of reviewing things that will be on the tests however. Overall, if you try in his class, you can pass ig.
Mr. Erwin's alright. He was very open to questions. Homework was tedious but okay—just take notes and pay attention to the test reviews. The only thing I wished he explained more was trigonometry and verifying identities. Tests are based on your process instead of the typical multiple answer choices. His teaching style may not be for everyone.
Every Exam is procedure based and it cost me alot of points in details. He doesn't curve and class average for exams sat around 35, but you can do correction to earn back points which brought me close to 90s. But I made over 90 in cumulative final exam, process was tough but I definitely improved. Also don't skip class for an extra credit.
