He has some cool movies and pictures and he had a lot of knowledge on the subject, but he gave pop quizzes like we were in junior high. He was also fairly liberal.
Very interesting! great lecturer and interesting classes! You will learn a lot and see a lot of sources in this class- great to take if you're interested in it.
SUPER interesting and funny, in the beginning you think he is kind of a jerk but he has a great appricatation for history and gets passionnate about it, so its fun to watc him.
One of the better "teachers" at ASU. Not the easiest on grading but a rewarding experience.
Very effective teacher. Entertaining, interesting, sincere. He's also really cute and I've heard he has a cool band.
Prof. Ruggles is very intelligent but his class gets kind of boring sometimes. He goes over his lecture notes and asks a few questions, then we leave. He is a very nice person but I would only recomend taking his class if you are interested in the material. In total, we have 3 tests and one paper, none of which are too tough.
Awesome course, instructor and TA! Too many texts costing a fortune though....
Absolutely unbelievable! 5 texts and you WILL read all of them! Very Liberal in his views. TONS of writing. There;s no way you could take more classes than this ONE..too much work; you'd never make it
This guy must be different in person, because online he was HARD. You read hundreds of pages a week and write very long responses to his open-ended questions on Blackboard, and the answers require tons of detail.. be prepared to work. You have one of these every week, and then two full on essay papers, which are also graded hard.
RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF READING!!! Very straight forward on due dates. Will grade you down if anything is an hour late. Lots of writing. I got away with reading only half the assignments and made it out alive with a B. Be very to the point with papers. Cite everything.
He was one of my best professors of history. Very respecful guy and even I thought of changing my major to history.
Prof. Ruggles is extremely knowledgeable and allows free discussion and discourse in his class. Excellent teacher. Please beware that he does usually assign side literature that is very biased. He states it is for critical thinking, yet the level of opposing viewpoints is uneven. His own bias in ME topics does come out frequently.
Very interesting class. History of Vietnam War. Lots of writing, but I expect that in upper division history class. Prof presented material well. Includes video lectures online as well. Tough but fair. Keep up with the reading and you'll do fine.
I was not impressed.
Learned a lot in the class, fair grading of assignments. A lot of reading but you learn the subject matter very well. A good professor if you enjoy the subject and want to learn and aren't just seeking an easy A.
Four texts required for this class and you will read all of them. Ridiculous amount of reading for and undergrad class. Very tough grader. Cite everything!
I am a very storng writer, got B+ in this class, and a B (Hst372). Is kind of a tough grader. There is a lot to read to do well on quizzes (5 mulitple choice questions..btw,not easy) and discussions. Discussions are more like a page long (singlespace)essay, and you need to cite & be extremely detailed to get full points. Final was a 5-8pg paper.
Lots of reading, but not unrealistic (100-200 pg per week). He is a tough but fair grader, your first paper will score lower than you expect, but in his notes he will basically tell yo how to write a paper for him. If you are a history major Dr Ruggle will make you a better historian. If you are not a history major be prepared to cite sources!
Took him for 372, 325, and now 456. Didn't required as much reading as the other 2 courses. He still grades hard & for this class, the multiple choice quizzes had about 8 questions. Even though I read everything, the quizzes killed me, they're hard. Final is still a 3-5pg paper. The course is EXTREMELY INTERESTING (I luv hist), but no easy A or B+!
Took this class online, it was incredibly easy. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. It's very straighforward: read, discuss, paper. If anything, I felt that this class wasn't challenging enough to be an upper-division course.
I had Ruggles for 325, 413 and 372. There is only one assignment per week - a DB and response to one student- some classes have quizzes others don't. Fair amount of reading, but I typically only read half of what is assigned. Love him as a prof! I got A- every time while taking a full load of classes (12+ units).
Dr. Ruggles is an incredible professor. His class, which required four paperback books, was quite informative. The online offering of this course consisted of a discussion board every week with one reply to another student and a weekly quiz with questions drawn from one of the texts. An attainable A albeit not an easy one. Highly recommended.
One of the best professors at ASU. Took course online and it was challenging, but incredibly interesting. Weekly assignments consisted of a discussion paper, response, and quiz. Course moves quickly during the 7.5 weeks, so it is necessary to stay current with readings.
Wonderful Professor! Not only does he make every class intriguing but he also encourages every student to come to their own conclusion and form their own opinions without providing his own opinions Brings each class to life! By far one of the best professors I've had. Make sure you read everything your assigned :)
Best instructor I've had at ASU, can't wait to take more of his courses.
Dr. Ruggles is a great instructor, really enjoyed his class and will take more of his History classes. You have to read the assigned books and Discussion Board in order to pass. Responds very quickly to questions. Recommend his classes.
Professor Ruggles was very easy to work with, and it was my own fault that I did not receive a better grade.
This site is ridiculous. It should be renamed "Who will give me the easiest A". Not interested in the Vietnam War at first but learned so much. It was the best class I've taken so far in college. Lots of reading and lecture notes but covers the Vietnam War from all angles. Easy quizzes. I thought easy A, but learned more than I have in any class.
Awesome teacher and very interesting class. Highly recommend any of his classes. Very interesting with the different books he uses. A lot of posting but you learn a alot.
Prof. Ruggles allows students to form opinions from the readings. Just do the work and participate in the discussion boards and you will get a decent grade.
Dr. Ruggles' Vietnam War and Contemporary American History classes are very interesting. There is alot of reading and writing to do. Just answer his questions completely with quotes and you will get a high grade. Tests are killers though, very short and one wrong will lower your percentage in the class. Great teacher and fun too.
An outstanding professor who clearly loves his subject. Be prepared to write until your fingers bleed, but you will learn a lot from him.
I was very nervous to take this class after reading other reviews, but Ruggles is a great teacher. I learned a lot, and the required were not difficult at all. I received an A in the class even though I procrastinated on every paper. After listening to his lectures and reading the book it was easy to participate in the discussions. Great class.
Ruggles is a great professor and very interesting. The Contemporary American History class was one of my favorites at ASU. You have to attend and read the books to pass.
This man will NOT give you 100% on discussion posts regardless of how closely you follow feedback.
Online course but full of great video lectures. This was a fantastic class. He really made learning this topic enjoyable.
1 of my favorite college classes! He uses relevant texts and he is very helpful. Always replies to emails timely & his TA's were great too. This class is very self-directed, you must do the reading but it's excellent and informative. The work is one 5 paragraph essay each week. This is the only class where I wish the lectures were actually longer!
great teacher. Immigration & Ethnicity was a great class. The assigned readings were helpful and relevant to assignments. A lot of it is statistics and numbers but you never know what questions will be asked. No quizzes are the same for two students. You must read material to be prepared or at least have books on hand. Discussion Board weekly too.
I have taken both Dr. Ruggles' Vietnam War and Contemporary American History and found they are set up the same. 1 quiz and one discussion post each week, that's it. It's easy to fall behind but as long as you do the work and pay attention to feedback given you'll get a fair grade.
Fair grader and offers constructive feedback. Course offers a primary text and supportive information that is useful for weekly assignments. Dr. Ruggles is the ideal professor, I feel like I learned a lot in his course.
I have taken several of Dr Ruggles classes and it was a pleasure taking his classes. The cadence and the content of the class i found beneficial and informative. I wish I had him for all of my History classes
Awesome 7.5 week online class. Lots of reading, but worth every minute. Quiz almost every week, 5 paragraph discussion and reply due each week. Fair grading and lots of encouragement from Professor and TA's. Wish I had more classes with this instructor.
I took the online Middle East history class in Fall, 2016. I just got an A in the course. There were two books. The course contains a weekly quiz and essay every week. Quiz answers can be found online, or if you read, they are real easy. For the essay, make sure you 1. Have a good intro with thesis 2. Cite sources 3. Write at least 4-5 paragraphs.
I took proff. Ruggles course HST372/ Modern Middle East because I thought it would be interesting and it was. My only problem is that he has a TA grade all of your work. She doesn't even have a degree in Middle Eastern Studies and she grades tough. She also grades as if this is an English course. You are taking the class to have someone else grade.
He doesn't participate in discussions. Individual feedback is not given. TA grades tough. Assignments are made up of 1 weekly essay posted in the discussion form. 1 quiz per week. Study guide isn't given for the quizzes. No final. A lot of reading. Assignments were restrictive, dry & boring. No room for ancestry association. Only wants facts!
6 weekly quizzes and 7 500-900 word discussion posts weekly. Utilized 5 different books but stressed skimming material for content. TA was tough grader but fair. No extra credit. Best compliment I can give is that it was an easy B, but I had to work hard for my A.
I loved this class! Be prepared to read a lot. There are 6 weekly essays (and a response to another student) but the prompts are easy and the rubric tells you exactly what you need to do. There are 10 quizzes, which are a little harder, but if you read you'll be fine. Ruggles makes Middle Eastern history easier to learn than you would expect.
Professor Ruggles was a hard grader on discussion boards, and the quizzes covered so much reading content that those could be tough as well. The course was really interesting though, and Ruggles gave a detailed response on what he was looking for with the DB after each week. Lots of reading, but you can get by if you're a decent skimmer.
This class was very straight forward. Reading is 3-4 chapters a week, reading primary sources, a 600-900 word discussion board post and reply to classmate, plus a short quiz. Dr. Ruggles is one of the best professors at ASU. You will learn a lot if you apply yourself and do the work. Posts are graded by a TA, hard to get 100% on them.
Pro tip: READ, READ, & READ. No BS with this guy. If you like clear expectations and consistancy then take his classes. Its the same thing every week: read, write an essay, take a quiz. There aren't any tricks but the expectations are high. So just do the work, dont submit it late, and you'll be fine. Took 3 of his courses. Also his beard is dope.
There is a lot of reading involved, several chapters worth in fact. I was not particularly fond of all the reading, but the material was relevant to what we were discussing. The discussions were also a bit much, but the class was very enjoyable.
I loved this class, Prof. Ruggles presents things in a very digestible way. There are a lot of books required, and you will read a good deal, but skimming was suggested. You do write weekly, but 300-900 words is very doable even with other classes. The TAs do grade a lot, but I found them fair and easy to reach when you had an issue.
Ruggles is the worse instructor I've ever had. I have never seen an instructor take such a hands-off approach to a course. Not only does his TA grade every assignment, he does not participate in course discussions, which happen to be the majority of our earned grade. He also only requires one response in discussions and his quizzes are laughable
Ruggles is a great professor. The class was demanding on time- there was a lot of reading (5+ chapters each week), some lectures and videos. One 5 paragraph discussion post, a discussion reply and 2 quizzes due each week. This class is definitely worthwhile and challenging- you're going to get from it what you put into it.
Discussion based for an online class which is expected. For HST 325, 3 books were required to do discussions out of. Small quizzes based off lecture. Reading is expected but discussions are always pertained to a certain topic/chapter so it is manageable. Taking this professor again for a different course next semester.
An essay, 2 quizzes, a DB response each week. I did not receive useful feedback but I did not seek out any feedback. He seems like an excellent, intelligent professor but the TA grading the essays is a buzzkill. I am a solid writer but she always slashed points and gave very little explanation. I'd take his class again but only in person.
So I can't say much about Brock because he barely had any lectures and the TA graded everything, but I really liked the class. Both books are useful, but if you have to choose between buying one or the other choose Cleveland. I usually only did the readings that related to my essay topic and skipped the rest, and did really well that way.
This is my third class with Professor Ruggles and it was great! The modules consist of reading chapters, a quiz and writing an essay as the discussion post. The discussion post needs to be 5 paragraphs from 375-900 words so it is super easy.
If you can spell E A S Y, you can pass this online class.
He was AMAZING. I loved his lecture videos, great voice, cat visits. Very straightforward. Wish more classes were structured like this. He is a true gem at ASU. Put in the effort and you will do well!
The class is a weekly 5 question quiz, a 375-word "essay", and responding to a classmate. The graders were really lenient with essay grading and the quizzes were straight out od the textbook, the one thing that some people might not appreciate is that you have to buy 3 books but they only cost me about $40-$50
Best professor Ive had and favorite course I have taken at ASU by far! Lectures are best part in this class. He is brilliant, hot and has an amazing voice! Interesting. Engaging. Entertaining. Challenging in a fun way. This will be a professor and course I will always remember. The groups are whatever but Brock Ruggles changed my thinking forever.
Every week you just turn in a 375-word "essay", a 5 question quiz that's straight from the textbook, and a response to a classmate. That's it I took A session so I was done with the course in 7.5 weeks, the easiest A I've gotten in college. The one thing some people might not like is that you have to buy 3 books and you never use them again :)
If you are looking for an easy history class because your major requires it, I would look somewhere else. This class seemed unnecessarily hard and the professor didn't take ANY late work. This class also barely discussed 9/11 or other current events so if you were looking for that; this is not your class. Class was well organized though.
Professor Ruggles was super knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject matter and you could tell. If you want some advice: skim for quizzes and general info and actually read about the essay topics. Do that and you should get an A as long as your writing isn't horrible. Also, epic beard.
Prof Ruggles is an awesome professor who cares about his students and the subjects he's teaching. The class was strictly DQ's and quizzes, which to be honest aren't easy, but as long as you read the books and give thoughtful answers you'll pass with an A no problem.
This is the easiest class ever. Took it as a Session B and took almost no time to do the work. He is available if you need to email him and everything is graded pretty easily. If you do your work on time, there is no reason to not get an A+. I also learned a decent amount, just make sure to do well on the open note quizzes.
This class was very interesting and the workload was very managable! A lot of reading involved, but the weekly discussion boards were relatively easy. I learned a lot from this class and he seems like he genuinely loves the topic which I appreciate. If you have the opportunity to take this class I highly recommend it!
Make sure you cite and read the assigned textbook(s) and you will do well. Good feedback on the papers that enabled me to adjust and get better. Would take a course again by Professor Ruggles.
Ruggles is definetly not the professor you want to take for this class. Get ready to write a 900 word essay every week for a discussion board and then respond to another post with a minimum of 700 words. He takes this online course way to seriously.
The class was well organized. Although this professor and his TA grade way too harshly especially when it comes to plagiarizing even though you already paraphrased and cite your sources for the weekly discussions. Quizzes are easy just go back to the PowerPoint for the answers. This should be an easy class but the grading is impossible to pass.
Dr. Ruggles is a fantastic professor. I learned so much in this course. For an UD History course, it's not too bad - one 375-900 word discussion post + reply to another student and a quiz each week. Lectures are really good, the texts are interesting. My only gripe is that the TA grading seems a bit arbitrary sometimes; feedback was useless.
This class was definitely an easy A. Weekly modules consisted of a very short quiz, a 5-paragraph discussion post, and a 1-paragraph response. There was no special final exam. Lectures were short, and you can skim the books for the info you need without having to read entire chapters. 10/10 would recommend!
This is the second course I have taken with Dr. Ruggles, and I highly recommend taking a class with him. There is weekly 5 paragraph papers minimum of 300 words, you must respond to a classmate's post, and two weekly quizzes. The rubric for the papers thoroughly states what you need to do to get the total amount of points possible.
Vietnam War class Pros- Great books, fairly graded, 8 easy quizzes and 8 900-word discussions, easy questions too, no final or midterm, nice in one-on-one emails. Cons- PowerPoints/lectures were unhelpful, one of the books (Things Carried) was useless, long rubric for grading, in syllabus and announcements was a bit demeaning came off as hostile.
Dr. Ruggles is a teacher who knows a lot about Vietnam. There are several books for this class. Must read the main book for test, or you will fail. No final or mid term! Interesting class, learned things I did not know before about both Vietnam and the U.S. If you have to take an upper class history, this one is recommended. Make sure you read!
Some Tips - assigns so much reading that theres no way you'll have time to do it all. For essays, read only the chapter with info you need in detail. Weekly quiz is easy enough to skim the powerpoints while taking the quiz. ALSO, write the essay according to the rubric, things like having transition sentences matter for every paragraph.
4 books in 8 weeks for one class. Essays submitted as discussions, so you not only have to write essays but read your peers'. One weekly DBQ with questions like "How would you advise FDR to proceed in SE Asia post WWII?". I did get an A+ in this class but I put hours into my essays. My writing skills improved. Useless lectures, you teach yourself.
Each week for an 8 week course, you will have to read about 100 pages in the textbooks and write a 600 word minimum response. However, usually there are only a few paragraphs necessary to read in order to respond to the prompt. The rest can be skimmed. Took about 3 to 4 hours per week on average. No midterm or final. Would highly recommend.
I found his class very enjoyable. A quiz and a 375 to 900-word essay are due each week. I found this easy to complete with my other classes because it is due. the same each week. He does not grade hard. If you watch the lectures, and videos provided, and read the few chapters you will have no problem in this class.
I am currently taking this class. As a hardworking 4.0 student, I regret every minute of this class. His coursework is genuinely interesting. However, the TA's must have something to prove. Their ridiculous grading is pulling me down. STAY AWAY!!
1 5-paragraph DB, 1-paragraph reply, and 1 weekly quiz. Nothing too crazy. Lots of assigned readings but you can complete the weekly assignments by skimming and reading the respective chapter. I did fairly well on the DB, but felt like the TA's goal was to not give anyone a 100%. Allows the use of AI as long as you cite properly - super surprising.
The concept of the course itself was easy. 5 paragraph essays per week and a quiz. However, the prompts don't match the readings. There is no established topic and you're kind of expected to figure it out and answer a very niche prompt. TA's goal (seemed like) was to not give an A (like why) (boo).
Lots of reading but provided outlines to assist with focus/skimming if you couldn't do the full reading. Very present and engaged throughout the course, actually enjoyed watching his pre-recorded lectures (rarity in online school) and he seemed enthusiastic about the material. Relatively easy A--weekly 10 question quizzes and short essays.
Loved this professor, wish I did better in the class but got pretty behind on the readings which are interesting and informative. Really liked his lectures where he was able to consolidate the material down and make it easier to understand. Includes a lot of great documentary clips from the time period we were studying. Overall good experience.
Skim the readings rather than fully read them since you only need enough details to write the 5 paragraph posts. 413 has five books, for this semester at least, that you need for said posts. It's very hard to get 100% on posts, but getting an A-/B+ on them is still possible. Uses Turnitin to check originality. The professor is respectful.
I took 456 for fun because I had an opening in my schedule, and I don't regret it. The weekly posts are simple and checked for plagiarism, but as long as you understand how to write a paper well, you will get a good grade. You only really need to buy 2 of the books- you have to cite 2 in each post. I love his energy and passion for the subject!
Over the seven week class period, we had to read about 350 pages of arguably boring books and 12 chapters of the textbook (~300 pages), other assigned readings, a five paragraph essay, and a timed essay for the final. Between this, a full-time job, another class, and a dislike for history, I have come to truly dread this class and the subject.
Dr. Ruggles and the TA Alex have been very quick to respond to emails and complete grading of assignments. The class was a little daunting with the number of books, but everything flowed together and the assignments were very straightforward and not overwhelming in the end.
