Showing up and filling in a scantron was 30% of the final grade. Literally just put down your name, SID, and a few bubbled answers and sneak out. He tries really hard and believes in the power of TBL but it sucks ass. HW, lab, AND test material are not covered in class because he takes all class to explain 1 problem. Gotta learn on your own.
Dr. Toggerson really knows what he's talking about, but physics is just generally tough for most people. For some reason, attendance is worth about 35% of your grade, so yeah, make sure you go to class. As long as you put in the work, you'll come out just fine.
I have always disliked physics. I was very confused the whole semester. This is the lowest level physics class offered (I believe) and was not that easy. It was a "teach yourself ahead of lecture" type class and team based learning. I hope they improve the class structure. Only did well because participation grade was contributed GREATLY.
The grading and homework in this class is more confusing than the material. The structure was a mess and hopefully they change it. However, Brokk was a really understanding and nice guy and made the class much easier. He really enjoys what he does and he was probably the only tolerable thing about this course.
I hated this class and the structure of the course. Brokk was rude and unhelpful when asked questions and made the material worse than it had to be. I would not take another class with him.
Does not teach. Literally, you are expected to just read the book and there is no lecture whatsoever. Want to take physics with Toggerson? You're better off just buying a book and teaching yourself than paying $20k to have a professor tell you to read a book and teach yourself. Thanks UMass. I got to teach myself physics.
As someone that enjoyed Physics in high school, I am very disappointed in Toggerson's approach. By putting the workload entirely on us and hiding behind team-based learning as an excuse for incompetence, I am now going to do terribly on my first homework and RAT because the reading did not prepare me for the assessments whatsoever. 1/5.
Never teach in class. He wants us to learn from homework.
I think this professor is pretty bad. I dropped the class early on because I hated his teaching style so much. I guess nothing against him, but he expects you to teach yourself everything and thats not cool, especially for a subject as confusing as physics.
The worst class I have ever taken in my life. If you can avoid TBL classes, do so. You basically teach yourself the entire course. You will be teaching yourself one unit, while also "learning" a different unit in class, then he will test you on the unit you taught yourself. The work he expects you to do outside of class is phenomenalEXPECT HOMEWORK
Tests are horrific; class average is in the 50's and that's his goal. The TBL part is the most useless, counterproductive teaching method for a physics class. You have to teach yourself everything, no exaggeration, and even then, you can fail the quizzes and tests. Overall one of the worst classes I've taken. Lecture is horrible. AVOID THIS CLASS.
The class is really not bad. All the exams are 75:25 pyramid, even though he doesn't describe them that way. Exam average is a C with his scale. The homework counts for a lot and is fairly easy. If your team likes you they can give you a 1.14 multiplier at the end for all team grades. So an 80 become a 91.2 which is an A. Team stuff counts half
Professor Toggerson knows a lot. He's a very smart guy, and if you go to his office hours for help, he gives you excellent explanations. The material is hard and sometimes he isn't clear, but if you put in the work, you'll be fine. The Team-Based Learning aspect of this class though sucks, but it can help your grade if you're a good team member.
He's honestly a really smart man. Put in the time to figure out the Mastering Physics homework, and pay attention to his in class conceptual problems. They're huge on the tests. I'd definitely take him for 132 but i not think he's teaching until Spring '17. Good Luck and have faith in TBL
If you put in the time and effort to do the 5 homework assignments you will do well on the quizzes and if you ask questions in class you will do well on the exams. Yes the exam average is very low but THE CLASS IS SCALED SO MUCH. Anything above an 86 is an A. You also get a team multiplier at the end of the semester up to 1.1 I think, so 70x1.177%
I understand a lot of people don't like him because of his TBL structure and difficult exams, but it is pretty easy to get an A in class if you put in the effort. He is scales and is super duper nice!!
Professor Toggerson's rating on this website is beyond me. He is dynamic and integrated TBL perfectly with lecture in addition to being the most dedicated prof Ive had at UMass. He seriously wants everybody to do well and makes you appreciate physics and not pure math! He is the mad scientist that the whole class respects.
Brokk is the best teacher i have ever had. He has made physics my favorite class by far which is crazy because i HATED it in high school. He is so enthusiastic and friendly and you can tell he is passionate about his job. Show that you are interested in the class and your grade will reflect that. 11/10 amazing guy.
Brokk may be passionate about what he teaches, but he is not an effective professor. He tries to come off as a caring professor, but he is rude and disrespectful in & out of class. I do not recommend taking a class with Brokk; he does not care about his students, even if you put in the effort to do well. My least favorite professor at UMass by far.
Either goes too fast... or waaaayyy to slow. There is no in-between and leaves students lost. I used to love physics.
homework makes me want to jump out of a very tall building
A lot of people on here are being unfair to Toggerson. Yeah, the class is hard as all heck but he understands he's teaching to non-physics majors and factors that into his grading and scaling. Plus every version of this class is hard, its hard subject material if youre not very math orientated. Again a lot of extra credit, plenty of time for hw.
Don't listen to the other pathetic comments made on here by others. Brokk's a real gem. He's an amazing lecturer and is always there willing to help students learn at his office hours, except only about 20/700 students ever show to his office hours so the people that right negatively towards Brokk are from the other 680 people in physics 132.
Toggerson really puts in the effort to help his students. I had him for both Physics 131 and 132 and it's clear that he really cares about teaching and inspiring his students. Physics is hard in general and Toggy always tries to work with the feedback of the class. Don't be scared by his rating, he is honestly the most caring professor I've met.
Brokk loves to make something not meant to be group work into group work, like say just sitting in a lecture hall. His methods are a little weird and the tests are sometimes nothing like class work, but the amount of extra credit hidden in this course is insane. Do the assignments and watch as your test average of 75 turns into 100.
I took his Phys 131&132. He is an amazing professor! Humorous, patient and unprejudiced. No attendance(you won't miss the class as long as you like physics cuz his class is literally interesting), great amount of extra credits (he shows the mercy every time). Office hour and TA tutoring center are provided every week. Strongly suggesting!
Brokk is such a good professor. He offers a lot of help and is very reasonable. The class has a large scale overall (still capable of getting a B if you do poorly on exams). Exams definitely require an understanding of material but he preps you fairly well with examples and LOTS of practice in class.
Toggerson is really amazing, he wants to get you learning and thinking differently than you have in high school and once you commit to his way, the class is 10x easier. There is a lot of homework, but there is 9 to 5, 4-day a week tutoring center of TA's that is ESSENTIAL to go to. Exams are tough, so do all the practice he gives.
I don't understand why he gets doubted a lot. Toggerson is the best physics professor. He wants you to learn and succeed. I hate Physics with a passion, but taking it with this professor is a must. I ended up receiving over 100 in the class. And to remind you, I hate Physics but if you put in the effort, you'll succeed. Recommend Toggerson 1000000%
Quirky but truly cares about his students and their success. A great class to take especially for those who need it for a gen-ed but didn't like or didnt do well in high school physics.
Dr. Toggerson is the best physics professor I've ever had. He acknowledges that the subject is hard to understand but is very clear in his lectures and is super accessible and helpful outside of class in office hours. The class is structured fairly and if you put a the work in, you might just not hate physics! :)
Grading is fuzzy. Nothing is clear cut, and doesn't clarify if you ask about it. He's rude when communicating. He's one of those professors that the subject makes so much sense to him that he can't understand why it doesn't make sense to you. Classwork is easy, but exams are difficult and near impossible.
Great class and great teacher. Yes it's pretty difficult for most people, but Brokk presents it in a very interesting and engaging way. His class was the first time in my life I've actually enjoyed physics. However, the tests are very difficult. I would definitely recommend him over anyone else teaching physics 131/132.
While participation isn't mandatory, skipping the class will only hurt you. Make sure to actually try problems during class as it helps prepare you for the exams. There is a lot of homework, but TA's and Piazza can help a lot for ones you are stuck on. This semester he stopped doing in-class quizzes, but beware because it's easy to forget them.
Toggerson is a great professor. I absolutely hate physics but he makes you interested in the subject. If you follow his way of learning it will be easier. The exams are extremely difficult mostly because there are only a few questions to the exam. The class is scaled however and you will be pleasantly surprised about your grade.
Condescending and rude. Tried to make physics interesting and tries to teach it "his way", which you won't find anywhere else - ask him about other methods of doing things for clarification as seen all over the web and from other professors, he'll just shut you down and snap at you. Not funny, not a good professor, hope to never see him again.
Brokk is a pretty good teacher explains concepts well and wills people to participate during lecture. Tests are right about average and curve helps so an 89 or above is an A. Do the homework and don't skip class.
Dr. Toggerson is an amazing person. He cares so much about his students and actually makes class fun. If you have a good group, do your homework and study you'll be fine. The TBL style class is so nice for physics and he is great at teaching. I really recommend taking physics with him he's the best.
I've had Brokk for both Physics 131 & 132. To be honest, it took me over a semester to actually like him. However, he is super fair when it comes to student suggestions and you can tell that he actually cares about his students. The exams are heavily based on content from lectures, quizzes, and practice problems. Requires a lot of studying time.
He made us read and take a quiz on a 50 - page syllabus... i think that's a little extreme and the class shouldn't have to be so "complicated". I wish the class had clearer grading criteria. I wouldn't recommend taking this class..
I used to love physics UNTIL I had to take this class and now I never want to see physics ever again :)
The only thing I wish is for the professor to actually try to lecture instead of making us learn the material on our own.....
IM SO HAPPY I WILL NEVER EVER EVER SEE HIM EVER AGAIN. I HATEEEEEEEEEEEED HIS CLASS :) he tries to be 'on point' by giving us a 15-page syllabus which no other professor does. I think he is just trying to always do less work.
Brokk is a good guy. I simply cannot understand these other reviews claiming he is a bad professor. Im no physics major but this class seems much easier than other higher related physics classes. You have to do the work for a good grade but its kinda easy.
Professor Toggerson is not the worst professor I have had, but given the difficulty of the material and exams, he did not do it justice in his lectures. He was unclear on what was important to know for exams (especially the final), so we went in blind. when people were caught using chegg on exam 2, he did not even consider that he didn't teach well
If you like bureaucracy, take him. He has a 24 page syllabus. I wish I were exaggerating. He took one of the easiest classes in the university, and made it somewhat challenging. Remarkable. He complicates simple topics, and rarely communicates what you need to know. The HW is untaught material, and his class is a confusing (mandatory) waste of time
I have never seen a professor who was so passionate about teaching a subject and his energy at 9am was appreciated. On the other hand, his exams are difficult in general (especially the final) but the way the course is graded makes it possible to get an A in the class without acing the exams. Do well on the labs, homework, and in-class quizzes.
Dr. Toggerson is a very caring guy. He definitely cares about his students + their wellbeing. With that being said this class was so hard, especially remote. The labs were so long and directions vague. His exams were extremely difficult. Make sure you attend every class and learn material as you go. The good thing is this class very scaled.
One of my favorite professors at UMass. He was very accommodating and gave extra credit and also dropped quiz grades, since you will have one every day. If you do not go to his lectures you will not do well in the class. His grading was very fair and he cared a lot about both the students and the subject.
Least favorite class I have taken. Labs are so long and irrelevant to the course material and the exams have nothing to do with the homework + are extremely difficult. Teaching is confusing.
Very caring and gives extra credit. I do agree that although his tests are fair, they do require quite a bit of studying.
Worst class ever. Online labs are ridiculous and have nothing to do with the course material. Exams are hard, we have a quiz in class every day.
Too many things to do, study, exam and lab are not related to the class..
Taking this class online was terrible. Boring lectures, labs that make no sense and take hours, very hard exams. Can't wait to just be done with this class
When I didn't do great on the first exam I met with him and he told me my study habits were awful. He tries so hard to teach physics in a "unique" way that he ends up completely confusing us. HW doesn't have to do with the exams. Only redeeming quality is giving some extra credit.
Run!!!
Teacher ruined my entire three years here at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Quite possibly the most horrendous class they offer, for a million dollars I would not take this course again. Lectures beyond difficult, hours of labs and homework with no correlation to the work on hand and little to no fun was had during the entire year. BAD!
Brokk is a great teacher and made physics enjoyable. It is okay if you don't do the best on tests, you can still do well in the class overall. There is a good amount of group work and I would definitely attend the lectures and stay on track if you want to succeed.
Dr. T is a great professor and made this class enjoyable for me! I would recommend going to every lecture and lab to get the most out of this class! The exams are based on lectures and are not too bad if you put some effort into studying for them. He does give a lot of extra credit if you fill out the forms he asks you to!
Even does not keep grading deadline. Makes students tired even After the end of semester.
NOT ABLE to finish grading more than one week after when the grade is due. The lecture does not teach you anything, you have to study by yourself. Put you into a small study group, but when the teammate is bad, or just rate you maliciously, you can not change anything, you just lost your grade. HW does not prepare for your exam.
Most bizarre class, takes forever to reply to emails, missed the faculty deadline for final grades, don't know what this man is doing with his time.
Pros: extra credit, passionate about the course Cons: HW and labs are unrelated / won't help study, minimal exam guidance (particularly the final) Tips: Exams are based off of lecture content but never questions from class, google topics as you go (the organic chem tutor, Bozeman Science)
Worst professor I've ever had, and I'm a senior. Rambles for so long and is not helpful whatsoever. Has a 20+ page syllabus. Never responds to emails. Was late grading and missed deadline for final grades. He somehow took an intro class and made it so unbelievably confusing and complicated. Went on a 15min rant about cheating to guilt trip students
Dr. Togg is one of the best profs I've ever had. Synthesizes physics with other fields (bio, orgo, etc) to show us why our concepts matter. Excellent examples, extremely engaging and caring. Time literally flies in this class because he makes it so interesting. I'm awful at physics but he explained the concepts so well I got an A on our first exam.
I would not recommend this class. The in class problems and his way of teaching was extremely confusing. The class is group work heavy. However, if you and the members have no idea what is going on, you are screwed. The HW problems do not match test questions at all in terms of difficulty. You have to teach yourself the material. Do not take this
Brokk and his condescending lectures will live on in my nightmares. He is rude, arrogant, and refuses to respond to student emails. He enjoys making it difficult to learn. He gives ridiculously hard exams and acts like grades don't matter which is not true if you plan on going to grad school. Avoid team-based learning like the plague!
He's a nice guy, but is not a very good professor imo. He does not clearly teach the material, and asks a lot of trick questions. He uses team-based learning so be hopeful your team mates show up and know the material. Unit homework is due before the unit even begins in class so you have to do a lot of learning out of class. Would not recommend.
One of the worst professors ever, all of the reviews below are true. He assumes you know chemistry and it is not a prerequisite. He skips steps when giving examples and refuses to answer questions in class. He has questions on the tests which he never taught. Your only hope is to get a good team in this TBL classroom. Good luck...
I'm shocked at these reviews. Best professor I've had. HW is due before you learn it but all answers are in the FREE textbook. 3 points of extra credit to final grade & he's seriously passionate. Demos make concepts stick. Collab exams boost ur grade. He DOES answer Qs in class what?? & Test Qs are just not verbatim to classwork. Expect to LEARN.
He wants his students to succeed. His lectures are actually pretty interesting and he always makes them fun and engaging.
I'm here to address all the reviews that say his exams are unreasonable. His exams are perfectly reasonable. Do the practice test and the practice problems, and nothing on the exam will catch you off guard. Brokk gives great lectures and makes the material approachable. Don't be afraid of this class!
He’s not bad so far. The material is hard but he gives you enough practice to understand and a bunch of office hours to i attend. I just took his first exam and got an 87 which is an A- in his class. So far it’s not as bad as some of the comments make it out to be. Don’t use the homework to study is my best advice use the practice exam.
I have no idea what the deal is with the bad reviews. Brokk has been wonderful so far! His lectures are interesting and engaging and he makes sure to cater to his students' learning needs, especially with the recent mask mandate lift. While this is a TBL class, I decided to not be part of a team and I don't feel behind or anything.
He makes you read then entire unit and do homework on it. Then he does the unit again over the following weeks. I would rather a step by step lecture vs reading his own textbook (with many grammatical errors). I received a 98.5 final grade but am really having to buckle down in his class. it is doable but just mad annoying in my opinion.
Go to class, pay attention. Great lectures.
The best way to put his teaching style is this, he throws you in into the deep end of a pool when you don't know how to swim, and once you've struggled and drowned, thats when he teaches. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy. However, he needs to stick with being in a lab and not a professor.
always keeps you late
His class is just a lot. He talks very fast which can be annoying plus I was in the 9:05 class so I was not a big fan of getting up that early. Exams are very conceptual. I would have preferred the TBL style were we as a group do practice problems rather than him leading it. The syllabus is 30 pages long so beware.
I am shocked by the bad reviews. Brokk is one of my favorite professors I've had at UMass so far. His grading scale is very generous where an A is an 89. 3 exams 15% each, homework & quizzes 10% , lab 20%, & team exams 15%. He is very passionate and makes physics fun and applicable to real life, I genuinely learned a lot.
You should always try to go to class! Ask questions and go to office hours if you don't understand something. He explains things pretty well. The practice exams are similar to the real exam, so you know what it will be like. Be expected to learn...it's not an easy topic! Dr. T wants you to succeed, so use the resources given and you will succeed.
Very nice and understanding and has a grading scale so that a 89 is an A but his lecture slides are so disorganized and he does not explain things well. I failed every exam but still passed the class. Lab grades depend on TA. Does give extra credit though and I would do it. Quizzes were pretty easy though as long as you look at the homework.
Toggerson was, by far, the most caring professor of a gen ed I have met. He genuinely wants to see you succeed and if you give him your best, he will give you his best. Don't be afraid to go talk with him privately for help and advice.
Exams were extremely difficult for the class level. Homework due before the unit is even started in class really makes it worse. His "textbook" that he wrote is pretty bad with no practice problems. You forget everything by the exam because there is no homework due throughout the unit which makes practice hard.
Very funny quirky guy. I hate physics but he made it make sense for me. I can see how his teaching style wouldn't work for others--some people told me they like the more mathematical approach to physics. Toggerson tries to separate physics from math and visualize it from the perspective of a life scientist. Tests were hard but possible. Go to SIs.
Can not teach at all. You will learn nothing except how to memorize the practice exams to pass the exam.
Was SO nervous for this class but it is SO manageable. His office hours are the best and he really minimizes the material to what we need to know (really KIN focused). The class gets scaled so much that its possible to end with over a 100. Study slides and the "next time problems". If David is your SI, you are golden!! Don't cut corners you good.
Brokk is a nice guy but the exams are much harder than any material covered in class. Luckily he does occasionally remove questions that everyone got wrong or were overly confusing. If you do well in the lab it will save your grade.
Terribly organized. I felt like I learned nothing except laughing when he tells cheesy jokes.
Toggerson is one of the best professors I've had, he cares, makes his own textbook so you don't have to pay, and he is hilarious. One thing I would say is that he has a different teaching method. It's very group based, so if you have a good group you're good. Exams are not similar to practice exams, if you understand the topics you should be fine.
Brokk is incredibly confusing (explanations make no sense, he goes off on random tangents instead of explaining anything). Impossible to know what to study and concepts that have never been mentioned in class show up on the exams. Impossible to learn in class and impossible to study on your own (because you have no idea what to study)
Prof. Toggerson knows his stuff but can't really teach others.use spreadsheets for all calculations and no calculator is allowed. the class also had a group grading system where each quiz was given as a group and individually which helped a little, but not much.NOTHING prepares you for the exams. Slides are difficult to understand.
Great person that cares about his students. Lab part of the class is useless and boring. I don't understand the way he teaches but exams are very easy. Homework and quizzes have nothing to do with the exams. For people that say nothing is like the exam, that is a straight out lie. If you can do practice questions he posts, you can easily get an A.
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH BROKK!!! Brokk is an extremely funny, engaging, and caring professor with a unique approach to learning/teaching but it WORKS! You get to learn google sheets too which is very useful. Homework, exams, etc are all very reasonable. There are a lot of team-based activities in this course, but it can only work in your advantage.
Honestly, this class was not as hard as everyone says; the material is not too difficult. Brokk is extremely enthusiastic about physics, however he is not a good teacher. He claims to value suggestions but will not implement any constructive criticism. I did not enjoy the TBL style learning but working in groups is the only way to learn.
Very passionate about the subject, his explanations and examples made abstract topics easy to understand. Help is there if you need it. Little work outside class, exams and HW are super easy if you pay attention, read the textbook, and practice a little. l. Only problem was that the practice/homework often had errors he had to fix retroactively.
This class is bad. The course should be very easy, but its dumbed down too much. Toggerson also does a very poor job teaching, and students are at the mercy of the TAs. The TAs often dont understand how to do problems or tell they will tell you to do the wrong thing. The worst part about this class was there were a TON of mistakes everywhere.
WHY DOES HE MAKE PHYSICS SEEM SO HARD? HOW CAN I GET As IN ORGO YET BE STRESSED OUT IN THIS CLASS. THE WHOLE FLIPPED CLASSROOM THING DOESN'T WORK IT'S HORRIBLE AND NOT EVERYONE CAN DO PROBLEMS INFRONT OF THE CLASS SOME OF US GET ANXIOUS WHEN WE ARE TOLD TO DO HARD PROBLEMS THAT WE HAVEN'T BEEN TAUGHT INFRONT OF THE CLASS. TAKE PHYSICS ONLINE
Worst grade I've ever received on an exam was in this class even though the topics were simple/introductory level. He says you learn more in a flipped classroom style but haven't learned much. Paying for a course to teach myself the material.
I hate this class. Do yourself a favor and take an online physics class. This is a terrible joke! You read his book to prepare for quizzes but none of that prepares you for the actual exam. If you get a 70 in the exam you are a genius.
This is the worst professor or teacher I have ever had in my life, and he is one of the better ones for the physics department. The HW and quizzes do not prepare you for the exam AT ALL. He expects you to fully understand the concepts before the unit has begun. He barely lectures and only does practice problems in class. WORST CLASS EVER.
WORST CLASS, WORST PROFESSOR. THIS IS THE WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. BROKK DOES NOT CARE WHEN HIS STUDENTS ARE CLEARLY STRUGGLING. THE TEACHING ASSISTANTS ALL TELL YOU DIFFERENT THINGS AND CONTRADICT ONE ANOTHER. STUDENTS ARE CONSTANTLY LEFT CONFUSED AND DISCOURAGED. PROFESSOR REFUSES TO ADMIT THAT HES THE REASON STUDENTS ARE STRUGGLING.
Physics 131 is one of the worst structured classes I have ever taken. Instead of a lecture session where you could learn topics and progress through the course, you have a TBL session where you spend 40+ minutes on two problems that you have no idea how to do. You also have a lab session with a different group so you better hope you get lucky twice
He is the most obnoxious and insecure professor I've ever had. Every question would be met with "well, when you take quantum field theory..." or "when I took quantum field theory". We get it, you're smart. Now teach us the material please. Lectures were painfully slow and boring. Often he didn't know the answer questions. Fun class material, though
Professor Toggerson is a nice person so this is more of a critique on the class itself. this class is not well set up and its would be much better set up similar to the chemistry classes
The exams are insanely hard and are only max 10 questions. HOWEVER, the scale in this class means an A is only 85% which helps a ton. He is funny and very eager to help students. He really wants you to understand and knows this subject is difficult. Homework is easy and you only have 4 quizzes.
great professor
Brokk tries a little too hard to be an educator instead of a teacher. He focuses on his work learning how to teach rather than actually teaching. 181 Lab was straightforward, however, he expected no lab to be finished in class, nor did he explain (well) any of the code provided. He threw code at us, lectured for half of class, then said "hop to it"
He is very supportive and understanding. There's a lot of TBL, but the group work can really boost your grade. You'll do well on the exams as long as you review the lecture notes, homework, and practice problems. He also offers plenty of office hours, which is great!
Brokk's class is no walk in the park - the exams are brutal and the flipped classroom model can be a struggle. But with the grade scale and Brokk's genuine desire to help, you can get through it. Definitely utilize Unstuck AI and other study resources to stay on top of this tricky course.
Prof. Toggerson is a great person who teaches with passion. Lots of help available outside of class. However... hw/exams are VERY hard and require a lot of studying. 1 or 2 quizzes a week, long HW due before unit is taught, and lab (which isn't super intense). need 89+ to get an A. Not impossible but LOTS of effort needs to be put in for an A.
Smart guy but can't teach. Exams are difficult as I mostly taught myself the content using homework questions and the textbook. Good luck.
He is rated poorly because teaching yourself stuff is hard and physics is hard. Course designed so that each unit connects back to biology/chemistry. There is basically infinite help and resources, you just have to put in work. He is funny and a great teacher but his personality is not for everyone. Exams are kinda evil (8-10 q) but 89% is an A.
This prof uses a textbook he wrote and teaches physics in a way that makes things way more complicated than they have to be. The tests are heavily based around the lectures and are only 12 questions and are semi-obscure. The class is scaled and the prof has a lot of energy, but the lectures were so confusing and the slides were unhelpful.
Brokk is definitely a divisive lecturer. To be frank, the Intro Physics program at UMass s u c k s. Brokk however, is very passionate and engaging. I loved his in-class experiments/demonstrations. The tests are not easy and border on abstract. There is a lot he does to support those who struggle including generous grade scaling. (An 89 is an A)
Nice guy but not relevant when you don't learn anything. This is a flipped classroom where you're expected to teach yourself. Then the exams are difficult on top of that and not similar to the practice exams or homework. The whole physics department is just .... the only reason students are able to pass is because of the crazy grading scale
Homework and practice problems are nothing like the exams. Textbook was useless for the last few units. Definitely recommend going to class, the in-class problems and practice exams are more like the exams. The exams were hard and the final was extremely difficult. Nice guy and wanted us to learn, but it's a hard class that requires tons of effort.
Grading system is messed up. Will make students miss an A by very very little percentages.
Brokk is nice. His teaching style, however, is harrowing. Studying for his violating 7 question exams is hell because he tries to reinvent the wheel with the way he teaches you normally stupidly easy physics concepts. The cherry on top is that I can't even find external resources to supplement literally anything Brokk taught in class. What a joke.
Honestly, one of my favorite professors at UMass. He tries to learn as many names as he can even in a big lecture! Tips to do well: go to every class, read/skim the txtbook for the HW, prepare for inclass quizzes by reviewing the HW Q its based on, and do as many practice problems as you can (esp from practice exam) and go to physics help room! GL!
Really caring professor who, if you come prepared to class, will teach you everything you need to know.
genuinely makes simple physics concepts so hard to grasp by using conceptual and abstract questions/ scenarios. i would understand concepts but get completely lost on the wording and format of exam questions. textbook and homework isn't really what we learn. nice dude he cares but terrible class + setup + bad teaching style
did not enjoy this class. he makes basic concepts extremely to grasp using conceptual questions on exams that make it hard to even understand what he is asking. cares about students but the layout and setup and teaching yourself then coming in to practice is extremely unhelpful. genuinely shouldve been one of my easier classes but it tanked my GPA
you teach yourself then come to class to practice very confused. TAs are unconfident during exam reviews and contradictory. brokk is caring but cannot teach well. exams insanely conceptual, abstract, and 7-10 questions. he wrote the textbook and it isnt the same as course/exam material. Lab material also did not relate to class material.
there's like no overlap between what we learn in class and what's on the exams. literally every single person was cheating on the exams and he doesn't curve them at all. he's a really nice person just not a good professor. I would rather walk on shards of glass than take this course again.
The best physics professor I have had so far. Physics is tough to understand, and he made sure his students understood the concepts by doing many conceptual problems. However his style of teaching is not for all. I appreciate his lectures and his passion in helping students in the class very much. If you are a serious learner, you will like this
The grading is 45% for exams, there are 3. Each exam is 10-12 questions, so if you get one wrong, you're kinda screwed. The grading scale is generous (89 is an A). Attendance is required b/c he has quizzes you need a code for. He gives multiple +0.5 extra credit options over the semester. All physics courses suck but at least he is entertaining.
P132 introduced me to CCPH. Prof has this pedagogy of being anti "puzzle physics" which basically means you can not figure your way out of a test question if you are shaky on the content by looking at the formulas. Overall I am grateful for the grading scale as my test average was ~30% and I still managed to get a C by doing well in other parts.
He is so enthusiastic about physics, I love him. Literally one of the most accessible professors, you can knock on his door anytime and he'll help you work through a problem. Once I actually listened to his advice and "stopped panicking, just start with the principle" I went from a 70 on the first exam to a 100 on the second exam. Great guy
