We watched a movie once a week and she lectured about the chapters we read. The tests were easy and she didn't seem to grade too hard on the final papers. Not quite as fun as I was hoping, but who doesn't like watching movies?
She is nice but not very helpful when it comes to the assignments. She does however respond in a pretty timely manner via email. Her lectures are either semi interesting or boring. Doesn't require too much work outside class. You either get along great or not really at all.
Heather is a very nice lady who is very dedicated to film production. However, she also manages to suck the magic and fun out of making media by forcing all students (most of whom are not going in to that major) to conform to tedious and annoying professional expectations. Not a terrible class but prepare to come out of it disappointed
Made class harder than it should have been and chose really old movies. She's real into film so she knows her stuff, but takes it to seriously. Take the other professor.
Very spastic and inconsistent with grading. She'll deduct points, but you won't know why unless you go to her office hours. Doesn't stick to her schedule on the syllabus and as a result, you never know what to expect. Doesn't tell you what to expect on tests. Overall, not a good professor.
She is very nice, though was a bit unclear on expectations at the start of the semester. Sometimes grading seemed tougher than it should have been for an intro class. She encourages students to see her during office hours, and allows you to submit a draft for your final paper (this is VERY helpful). Attend class unless you want to miss easy points.
She wasn't a horrible professor, but expectations were not clear the first few weeks of class. My best advise to anyone taking this class would be to do the reading twice and to make sure you read the syllabus.
Great class and great teacher. Dagnan knows a lot about film. Contrary to what many people have said, this class is not hard. It's not the easiest class I've taken, but it still required minimal work. Does anyone realize that we are at a university so that we can learn something?
Any professor that hands out a copy of notes that she took in college is on the vain train. She seemed like she had something to prove to her peers that had been in the department way longer than her. She knows this is a general education class, yet seemed to be immediately put off that no one in our class was a film major. Stay away.
Very nice and very good to look at. But damn, she is so pretentious. She needs to realize that the class she is teaching is for a gen-ed requirement. She is a very HARSH grader as well. Get on her good side. I feel like she may play favorites.
She is tough and def plays favorites. She loves students that know a lot about cinema. Tough grader. Also she teaches the class like it's a 400 level class.
If film isn't your life and your own goal, this professor wont like you and you will most likely struggle. She hold unrealistic expectations for her students who are taking an entry level course. If your notes for movies aren't over 2 pages and extremely detailed, don't expect to get full points.
We watched a good variety of films. It was on the difficult side for a 100 level, especially if you're not a film buff. Take REALLY detailed notes during movies or you won't get full points. I'd suggest watching the movies once on your own before class. The final paper was easy, but the final was hard. This is definitely not a blow off class!
She was a really good professor. I learned how to critique film and view it in a different way. She was really helpful during office hours. You need to take notes on the movies, and some said they didn't like that, but I liked it because it lets you think about the films and share your ideas. I really loved this class!
took this class in winter semester for gened credit, and its not a blow off but its not as hard as some pople here say. i went to most classes, took notes, did some of the assigned reading and overall did well.
I learned alot. Some people in the class thought because it was film they wouldnt have to think, but hey, we're in college! I got to watch things I wouldn't have watched, and the lectures were really interesting and helpful. Take notes, show up, and talk to her if you get confused or lost! she's really helpful and the movies were cool.
Took it last semester. Its not the easiest class Ive taken, but it was really interesting. You need to do the screenings and lectures. Taking notes is key cause screening notes are graded. She's really nice. You have to work, but it's a great class and you learn lots about film.
Everyone before me said this class was difficult, but I found it simple if you followed directions. Take good and detailed notes on the films. Take detailed notes in class. Read the chapters. GO TO AN SI SESSIONS IF POSSIBLE. That is how I passed. She was very fun and nice and personable. I liked her a lot! :)
She is a real sweetheart who is interested in seeing you pass the class. She is quite bright, kind of Ivy league but you really learn a lot. I'm not a great test taker but she is thorough and goes over all notes before the test and gives you a study guide. It's important that you come to class early and bring your clicker. She's a great professor!
Her tests are hard for a gen ed class. She does teach well but she is very brief in her lectures, she just gives you the basic ideas in lectures. I pointed out a flaw in her syllabus and she ignored it.
Not a bad course. It's clear that the professor works hard to do a good job but she comes across as a bit smug.
She is really passionate about what she teaches but she is terrible with returning emails!!
She obviously knows what she's doing, but she takes forever to grade papers. she doesn't give much guidance on assignments. I was getting B's on the film notes the 1st 4 classes. It wasn't until the final film note assignment I got an A because she finally told the class what she wanted on them. Recommend not taking, mostly unhelpful.
her class is directed more towards film majors, so is somewhat challenging for GenEd students. take detailed notes and attend SI Sessions if you can.
Great Professor! Her assignments can be challenging because they really force you to think. If you are decent at writing, then the class will be easier for you. I highly recommend her though
She is very passionate about film appreciation. She makes it interesting for students to connect and relate to what could be considered a very boring course.
She is the WORST! Totally unclear, takes herself too seriously, and never in her office and hardly ever responds to email. if you need additional help on anything, go find someone else for help because she's never around. Take this class with someone lse!
She seems like a very nice woman but teaches like it is a 400 level class. Her tests are far too hard for the level of class.I expect to have to do a good amount of reading and studying for all of my classes. However there is something wrong when a film appreciation gen ed requirement is taking up more of my time than my 300 level courses.
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!! This woman thinks she is teaching a group of aspiring Hollywood directors or something. Grades super hard and is not very receptive to students! AVOID!!!!
Dagnan is not as bad as some reviews here indicate. She is smart. She is dedicated. But she makes the class way too hard.
She is not a good teacher in my opinion. I cannot recommend her. I dreaded going to her class, and I love movies. And yeah, her class is way harder than it should be for a 100 level class. Avoid her.
I dreaded going to her class, and I love movies. Worst teach I have ever had.
Professor Dagnan is...professor Dagnan. She is nice but if you dont FULLY understand what she is saying and ask her more than once she can kind of get smart with you. She expects you to know more than you know as a student. and believe me when I say she is HORRIBLE HORRIBLE at answering emails. She has too much on her plate it seems
This is a good gen ed class. It's not that hard, as long as you go to class. I learned things about movies that I wouldn't have if I didn't take her class.
took this class in the summer and it was great. this is not a hard class and its not boring. my friend took it in winter and I would recommend taking over the summer because its intense and seems like she has more fun in the summer.
I have earned As and Bs in 400 level courses and ended up with a C+ in her class. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HER. But I do think that this course could be great with one of the other instructors.
I did not have much of an interest in the class coming in, but she made it not so terrible. The class itself was difficult with a lot of required readings and papers to write, but she did try to help us out.
Brooke is a very sweet woman and knows a lot about film. At first it may seem as if she is throwing out all these unfamiliar vocab words, but if you stop her she will explain everything she says. All-in-all she was a good professor and very helpful, you just can't be afraid to ask questions
This was a challenging class but it was fun. The exams were take home exams and we watched a movie almost every week. I would recommend Prof Dagnan, if you ask for help or go to her office hours she if both very nice and willing to help.
I've had Professor Dagnan for many film studies classes at EMU & she is not that hard. Yes she expects a lot but I always learn a lot, too. You have to go to class and take notes. For this class the exams were take home and there was a final paper. I alwlays find her in her office when she says she will be there.
Dagnan is the worst professor ever, she never has due dates posted until right before something is due. She assigns SO many readings and assignments. She plays HORRIBLE avant garde films that are extremely inappropriate. She is very rude and will not help you with anything. If you do not agree with her, you will get a bad grade.
Does not respond to emails, assigns things on surprise, never has set due dates, rough on grading, had strong opinions and if you do not agree she will not like you and she will make you feel dumb. She is mean and her assignments are hard. You need the book and plan to read A LOT. She is the worst professor Ive ever had. I do not recommend.
awful is the best word to describe this "learning" experience, and i got an a.
This was one of my hard classes and I personally hated going here. She expects a lot from you and when I asked her for help at her office hours she made me feel like a complete idiot. She wasn't even at her office hours at one point and I kept revisiting it and she wasn't there. Her class made me stress out and the movies we watched were HORRIBLE
This professor clearly loves what she does and loves film, but the problem is that she expects you to love film too. Don't expect to just be watching movies- its much harder than that! Quizzes in class every week, two very long papers, and two exams that are very difficult with unclear expectations. Very difficult to get a good grade
This was an odd experience. I feel that this would be more effective graded as an essay format as a lot of the concepts can be explained multiple ways and that there isn't one clear "right answer," making a lot of the tests a jump. She's very into experimental film, which for a basic intro class isn't the most interesting or applicable.
Her teaching style is awful. I am a good student but she made it really hard to get a decent grade on her exams. She showed some horrible movies. I regret taking her class. I had been thinking about majoring in film, but her class killed my interest in movies.
I skated through this joke of a class with an A. And you will too if you show up and pretend that you're into what she's blabbering on about. It's not a hard class but her lectures are very, very boring. I needed to drink a cup of coffee before every class to stay awake. I fell asleep the one day I forgot to stop for one!
I was warned by my friends before taking this class that she makes it hard. OMG! They were totally right! I didn't know what the heck she was talking about half the time. This is supposed to be a film class but it seemed more like a philosophy class. I passed, but in all honesty, I have no idea how I'll use what I learned when I make movies.
If I could I would rate her as a zero, because that is all that she is worth -- NOTHING. I wasted my time and money. Easily the worst prof that I had in my 4 years at EMU. I didn't think that a teacher could be this horrible. She changed the way I look at movies, and not in a good way. What a waste. Avoid if you care about your education.
Dagnan can't teach worth a crap. The class is really easy but I still don't recommend it because of her. Sometimes I wanted to slam my head against the wall when watching the boring-ass movies that were REQUIRED viewing. Her movie choices give new meaning to the expression of "I'd rather watch paint dry" than watch her film selections.
She is pretty tough grader, expects very specific things from students which is sometimes hard to get ahold of in the original assignment post. Pay careful attention to assignments and make sure to do the readings. Give yourself plenty of time for assignments as well. Take advantage of extra credit, it saved my grade.
I am in her international cinema class this fall and after the first class meeting I can already see problems.
She was absolutely the worst professor I have had at EMU. This class was completely online and she never once respond in a timely manner to canvas messages or emails, her responses always took at least four days if she even responded. Her assignment were often unclear. I would suggest if you need to take this course, find a different professor.
I really wanted to like this class. But she made it unbearable. I dropped.
Dagnan takes the fun out of movies. The course should be called "Introduction to the films that Dagnan likes." Awful, awful film choices. Super boring lectures. Watching Casablanca and Citizen Kane felt like punishment. She has no sense of how to make the course appealing to young people. Stay away from this one.
I took the online section of this course, there was work, but overall if you complete assignments on time this is an easy course. Enjoyed it.
The course was easy, just finished a few weeks ago, it's a short class, half of a semester, so the only thing that made it harder was doing the work in less time
The most unhelpful, least nice teacher, or even person I've ever met. Had a death in the immediate family and was told that wasn't a good enough excuse to hand in an assignment late. So completely unhelpful and rude. DO NOT take any of her classes.
Worst teacher I've had at Eastern, doesn't respond to emails quickly, doesn't know how to use Canvas, and the movie choices absolutely suck, besides Casablanca.
only 4 weeks into the semester and is already the worst professor I've had at Eastern by far. Doesn't respond to emails when it's an online course. Not clear on directions at all ! Stay clear of this professor !! This is only a Gen Ed course ! If I could give her all zeros I would
A lot of what she teaches is common sense with how lighting, angles, etc. work. That said, if she says one thing works a certain way, you better just accept it, even if it is very arguable. Answer based on what she wants to hear, not what is right. Sometimes states contradictory things so just remember what is said about the specific scenes
first if you have accommodations through the university steer clear of this professor. its not a great class and is quite tough for being a gen ed. she did not follow through with my accommodations, i took it to the university and they aid they have had problems with her before. the lectures do not line up with the exams there are 2 of them.
I took this as an elective, thinking it would be fun and an easy A. WRONG! She never responds to emails. You are pretty much left in the dark for assignments, because when she does respond(days later) it is not helpful at all. I am typically an A student and I am so angry that with all the effort I put in studying, I received a C-. Don't take her!
Don't expect to hear back from her in emails. If you do she will probably give you a attitude about having to reply to emails. She gives way to much work in one week. Be prepared to work a lot . I would highly recommend not taking her.
Way too much work for a gen ed class. Rarely responds to emails, even if you send it through canvas. The work load is way too much considering you have online lectures, quizzes, discussions and exams every week-two weeks. Unless movies are very interesting to you, I would not recommend taking this because you think it will be an "easy A"
Knowledgable in the subject matter but TERRIBLE to deal with.
I took her for an online class so I didn't have as much interaction with her as others. That being said, I had no issues with her. She was fair, responsive and knowledgeable. The work load was INTENSE but it was a 7 week accelerated course so that was to be expected. Hard tests but easy homework. Offers a fair amount of extra credit. Recommended.
Worst online instructor I have ever dealt with.. Usually an A student and ended the class with a c-. So unbelievably disappointed that I took her class. Overcomplicated instructions on things such as discussion posts. Wouldn't reply to emails and when she did it was in a VERY rude way. Not there to help you - at all. Overall, dont take her class.
You can tell Brooke is using feedback from previous students like ones on here to improve what she's doing, which I can appreciate. She's not personable and can be rude. Only gave one class notice on midterm and didn't tell anyone what material would be on it. First half of the class is an extreme amount of reading. Having an essay also sucks
She explains the material well but is disorganized and impossible to reach outside of class. Her assignments were vague, full of typos, and with incorrect information, but when trying to email her about it she just does not respond, and then would act defensive about being disorganized. Went over class time pretty much every other class.
Man oh man, where do I begin. By far worst professor I have had. Does not properly explain things in an online class, and doesnt respond to email. Terrible movies and boring online lectures. Expects you to do a TON for a 100 level class, in a very short amount of time while she takes forever to grade anything. DO ANYTHING AVOID HER CLASSES!!!!!!!
Trust the reviews here. She's an awful teacher. Lectures are the definition of boring. The required film viewings are beyond boring. I never thought that a film class could be so uninteresting. Take someone else.
Dagnan seems willing to help and I never had a problem with her not answering emails, as long as you message her through canvas. The course itself seemed unnecessarily difficult for a 100 level class. There is a lot of reading for a film class and the quizzes and tests had very specific questions. I don't think the textbook helped much.
This course is the hardest gen ed I have ever done. Avoid if you can.
Do not take this course if you are not willing to put in the work. The course content wasnt difficult; but you do have to study and earn your grade. With that being said, I really liked her and would recommend her online version of the class. I loved being able to work at my own pace, and she provides everything her students need to succeed.
Shes alright, she's nice and she's passionate about the subject. I just wish she wouldn't pick a majority of incredibly uninteresting films and articles. I was at the brink of falling asleep many times. I also REALLY WISH SHE WOULD ANSWER HER FLIPPING EMAILS. SERIOUSLY. WHY EVEN PUT YOUR EMAIL ON THE SYLLABUS IF YOU DON'T ANSWER??????
Prof Dagnan has a lot of practical knowledge and know exactly what she wants from students on assignments, but struggles to effectively communicate either. Example papers and more concrete guidelines would be helpful. She is a tough grader and feedback is limited. We had to pay extra for a service that tracked our attendance, but there was no book.
I took her online CTAT 145 and she was disorganized but I thought that was because it was an online summer course. Then I took her CTAT 445. Her expectations were consistently unclear and I never knew what she wanted in assignments. I ended up withdrawing because it was so stressful. She does know the material and care about film studies a lot.
Loved this online class. One of my favorite online classes so far. It was pretty easy and she had us watch a lot of movies. And no pricey textbook at all!
Many unfair comments about this professor, she knows her stuff and does require work but it is college. Also at least the course I took was a 7 week accelerated course, same work shorter time. Seems many are critical because she requires work. I loved this online class & learned a lot more from this course than many of my other geneds at EMU.
Take this it was fun. We got to watch a lot of movies and it was a gen ed class. Not the easiest but not hard either.
Does not respond to emails. Over the course of about 2 weeks I sent her 4 messages according to her syllabus. No response to any. Trying to contact her is impossible and wont happen.
Professor Dagnan is straight-forward & gives very detailed instructions, everything you need in order to succeed is in the syllabus. The content packed into this 100 level course is substantial, be ready to work. Tests are not easy, you need to be able to apply what's been covered. If you're expecting a cupcake class, you will be disappointed.
terrible experience, i should have trusted the reviews, not a good teacher, makes a gen ed class too hard, take anyone but her
This was a good & easy online course for a GenEd course. Easy really, just did the required work and got an A- also offers extra credit.
One of my favorite GenEds at EMU, lots of movies to watch and a course project. I got a lot out of this class, also lots of angry ratings for Prof. Dagnan here she is way nicer than some ratings make her out to be.
I thought Id enjoy watching movies for credit but I absolutely dreaded this class. I shouldve listened to the reviews. The course moves very fast, and you have no room at all for error, huge workload, no extensions, Professor was hard to reach, test questions were different than course lectures, and the readings were excessive.
This class has been so easy to fall behind on, because due dates for everything are the very last day of midterms week and finals week, with only one assignment in between for discussions. If you don't follow the suggested calendar given, it will become hard to catch up. I personally didn't like this class, and Professor Dagnan gives so much work.
Brooke was notorious for not answering emails, though this was only something that I heard. The class as a whole was half a semester and was just too much for a non-major cinema studies course. The final exam includes many confusing questions, typos, and a couple of repeated questions. Overall a bad experience, I'd avoid taking her section.
Easy class--just needed to watch teh films and lectures all online. Quizzes and exams were easy with notes.
Fun GenEd class--watched lots of movies, easy grading and could use notes on all tests. She also offered extra credit.
Global Cinema was a fun GenEd class. The course is graded mostly on short weekly assignments and a project that you get to work on for the whole semester and she's an easy grader at least for this course.
Never responded to a single email I sent her. Never graded anything in a timely manner. Gave an unrealistic amount of time to take quizzes (for example,17 minutes for a 15-question quiz with video clips that needed to be watched). Would never take this professor again. Do not recommend her.
I really love this professor as a person, but a lot of the class is taken way too serious because 75% of the class is just there because they need the art credit. You have to watch a film every week and combined with other more important classes you get behind and it just becomes too much. Her quizzes are 15 minutes and are always like 13-17 qsts.
Take this class with this professor at your own peril. The course is very content heavy. You are expected to read quite a lot, listen to hour long lectures, do weekly projects, peer reviews, and tests. For an intro class. Assignments won't be post until almost the deadline, so really pay attention. She will never respond to student emails.
She was by far the worse professor I've ever had. She is a film elitist who is stuck in her own bubble and hates outside opinions. She knows what she's talking about and is qualified to teach the class but she will be very mean to anyone who can't keep up. She also will never answer her emails.
I was thinking of majoring in film, but her class killed my interest in movies.
I went into this class hoping to enjoy movies, but it was a struggle. Lots of heavy content, with strict deadlines and unresponsive communication from the professor. unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing for the challenging exams. Overall, not recommended.
Dagnan is not very good at using canvas for a class that is hybrid/online. The syllabus states due dates that are completely incorrect and the assignments are always locked when they should be open. She has strict requirements for how you should email but does not respond to them even if you follow them, she's basically unreachable. Don't reccomend
To my belief Prof. Dagnan doesn't grade fairly. There's deadlines put in place are very strict especially for the reading. Every test we take in the class room are like 3 questions and it's worth 20 points so if you get 1 wrong then your down 10 points. Her quizzes are very heavy (including clips) with a short amount of time
This professor is the least professional person i've ever met. She never response to emails, impossible to talk to her after class, due dates in the syllabus were always wrong, assignments would open the day before they were due + locked before you saw. My final got graded before my midterm so I lost many points. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
Please read her reviews before taking her class. I didn't and I paid the price. I have never been more disappointed with a class and professor.
This was the worst online course shell I've ever had. Not only were their assignments inaccessible at times, causing students to miss an assignment with no way to do it, but the entire Unit 4 wasn't even there, the professor testing us on material that was not even made available to students. Reaching out to the professor is a joke, crickets.
Why doesn't she respond to emails? Reading her reviews, I see I'm not alone. Seriously, why can't she even do something as basic as communicate with her students? She's a black eye on an otherwise solid film program. To say I'm disappointed with this professor is a vast understatement. Please do yourself a favor and avoid her.
Prof. Dagnan takes their class seriously and expects you as the student to do the same. Recommend that you read the syllabus. They offer a lot of extra credit at times so there's plenty of opportunity to get your grade up. This isn't an “Easy A art course” where you skate by. Tough, but fair grader. Enthusiasm and participation matters.
god forbid u take a picture of the screen. never take photos in her class she'll erupt. took her for CINE145 so if u miss being in highschool and being berated like a child this is just the class for you. shes such an energy vampire she managed to make movies not fun. your canvas will be so disorganized because of this class. terrible personality.
She is a horrendously bad teacher. Her attitude is always garbage. Her ego is huge. Her communication skills just plain suck. EMU, why must you keep a "professor" on the faculty whose sole purpose seems to be to treat students like trash?
