I don't understand how a prof can assign over 50 readings in half a semester, then only test you on 3 for a midterm. By the way, the midterm is a one week take-home consisting of 3 essays. Try to make that happen.
She's an extremely nice person, but she made this class so boring. The only assignments are the readings and then writing papers (short, long, then three in a week for the midterm and final).
Just skim the readings, but don't skip them. When you get the writing assignments it will bite you in the butt if you have to read all of the topics for the first time.
Her Eng 101 class is not bad. You do have to do some readings but it isnt that bad. There is no midterm or final just an essay you have to turn in. If you go to class and do all the peer editing you should get a good grade. She is alwasys willing to help you with your essays,
Prof. Harrison definitley has high standards, but she is very clear about them, and also very open to helping if you're struggling or need direction. There's quite a bit of writing involved, but you also get to do rewrites if you are not satisfied with your grade.
Brooke is an excellent, extreamly intelligent professor. She keeps my interest in class and she genuinely cares about her students. The class is not easy, but definitely not hard. Just attend class and ask a ton of questions.
Brooke was a good prof... She graded hard, but she gives you the chance to redo papers as long as you go to peer edits. Its kind of a boring class overall.. You have to read the readings because thats all you write about is the writings in the book. You def. need to book
Lectures bored me to tears. Fair grader and lets you redo papers. Pop quizzes-beware
This class can be a little boring at times, but Brooke is a great professor that truly cares about her students and how well they do. Small quizzes, somewhat difficult papers but she is always willing to help and lets you redo as long as you go to class. Definitely need the book, at least the Signs of Life to write the papers. Take ENG 101 with her
I hate english, but she is by far the best prof I have had in this department. She is overly considerate and joy to have and doesnt act like she is better than you because she has a Phd. Hard to find in a CMU professor
She is a very nice teacher who truly cares. She lets the students get involved in discussions and asks their opinions. She is very helpful, but is a bit of a pushover, not too negatively though. If you are deciding between her and another pick her hands down.
Brooke is a nice teacher. Her lectures are kind of boring but not bad. She likes to get the class involved
Fantastic professor. She is very helpful and her class was overall easy. 5 papers that were generally easy. Impromptu essay on the days papers are turned in, VERY easy though (I got A's on all of them). Go to class, she takes roll. Lets you out early on Fridays and is very up-beat. Take this class with her, you won't regret it.
TAKE HER. 5 easy papers that you can rewrite for better grades. Very nice, flexible, and approachable, and class very rarely goes the entire 50 minutes. I love Dr. Harrison, and would take her again in a heartbeat!!
Brooke is a GREAT prof. If you take any of her classes, you're guaranteed a fair grade and as much help as you need. In class, she's very clear and makes a great effort to make sure the whole class not only gets involved without pushing, but understands the subject matter. Do the reading and you'll be dandy.
Very helpful, approachable, and nice. Office hours three times a week, and you can rewrite every paper for a higher grade except for the last. Cancels class about once every other week, and class rarely goes the whole 50 minutes. I hate English, but she made it OK. Def reccomend.
She's a babe.
Brooke is an awesome teacher, she is very helpful with giving you ideas for papers and also with clearly explaining the topics. I took the class in the summer and if was very fast and a lot of work, but she made it a lot better than expected because I was dreading it.
The only thing Brooke Harrison did for my desire to finish my English major was destroy it. Seriously. Her class is so bland, so uninspiring, so pointless. She covers what any responsible English teacher covers in high school, but fails to get the class excited about what we're doing, which really kills it for me. Not recommended (strongly).
She is VERY boring. Longest 50 minutes of my life! She has no variety in her teaching, the material was high school level, and her voice is monotone. She's a nice lady and wasn't too hard, just so dull!
Super nice!! and fairly easy! ..ive always struggled in english/writing papers, but she helps you with ANY
Super nice!! and fairly easy! ..ive always struggled in english/writing papers, but she helps you with ANY questions you have! i beleive there are only 6 simple paper and 5 easyyy quizes on grammer (which are open note) i recieved an A in the class..but dont be afraid to ask for help or to go to the writing center! : )
amazing teacher. so nice. so helpful. mandatory class obviously. but she's great. everything's easier with her. all my friends complain about there teachers and all they make them do for eng but i have no complaints with this prof. shes great i will try to take her for every eng class
Thought this class was going to be difficult like every1 makes it out to be.If you can take ENG 101 here do it worth Friday classes. All my friends have crazy papers to write but hers were much easier(plus you can fix them and still get 100%)She's also very nice and willing to help. You do 5 papers(last ones hard)other assignments drop lowest grade.
Great Pro. Really helps you out when you need it. take her if you can.
TAKE HER CLASS IF AT ALL POSSIBLE! She is the best professor to have ENG 101 with. There are more papers, but they are graded lighter. You can rewrite any paper. and it is easy to get a bad grade up. And she isn't a jerk like Blond.
By far the best prof. any freshman could ask for!!! She is funny and has a great way with her students! Love her, take her class if at all possible!
Brooke is extremely understanding. She takes her time making sure you understand what she expects from you. She is an awesome teacher, very nice and loves when people makes (appropriate) jokes in class. I strongly recommend her!!!
Not a big fan. Lets you redo all papers so pretty easy but a terrible teacher. The reason I had to redo every paper is because she didn't explain what she wanted from the start. If she's the last option go for it but maybe search for a couple others cause she's boring and the class can get pretty hard.
GREAT PROFESSOR! I heard that most people didn't do well on papers in ENG 101, even if they were good writers so I was pretty scared for the class. Brooke isn't a tough grader at all and she lets you redo all papers up to full credit. I loved her class, and she made it great!
Brooke is great! She really cares about each student individually and is always availble to talk to about anything and very understanding and fun loving. I really suggest here for any class.
Brooke was a great teacher! She gave us a syllabus on the first day telling us what we would be doing every class period for the semester and we stuck to it. Every paper would be redone for full credit and often times she would let us out early on Fridays or if it was a nice day. I would definitely take her again if I had the option.
I took Professor Harrison for ENG 101 and she is extremely helpful whenever it is needed. She goes over everything to make sure everyone understands. She also lets you rewrite every paper for a higher grade. Extremely nice as well! I would recommend her for ENG 101
Dr Harrison is a great professor. Take her while she is still here. Papers very straight forward, quizzes explained well, utilizes class time well. Class is Mandatory so go. Great Prof
Very Good teacher. Had her for ENG 101 and she was pretty easy and laid back. Taught me a lot and she really helped prepare me for ENG 201. If you remember what she teaches, you will do well in 201.
I just finished up taking this course online. 4 written essays, 4 written exams, and a handful of Discussion Board postings. She gives you a list of what to do expect/complete each week, and as long as you stick to it you will do well. She responds to emails quickly, gives you a chance to correct papers for a better grade. Take her.
She is boring, opinionated and makes the test way to long for a one hour class. Doesn't have the ability to get a class motivated into reading a section or to talk about anything.
She's a great professor. For every paper (except the last one) she allows you to re-write it for a better grade. You just have to go discuss the paper with her during her office hours and she literally tells you exactly what to do to fix it. Exams are just on stuff discussed in class, she doesn't try to trick anybody.
She's really nice and straight forward about the assignments you're supposed to do. She is sort of a hard grader. Took me a while to get up to her standards, but i got a solid B in the class. Class is boring and she often makes you come just to "work" on things, which is annoying. Otherwise, great prof. (:
She is a nice person, but she takes a ridiculously long time to grade anything and return it (over a month). Her papers are so focused that it makes them hard to write (8 pages compare/contrast the setting of 2 short plays). Also, all of the points in the class add up to 100, so you put in a lot of effort for little in return. Expect a decent grade
Very nice, helpful and straightforward professor. You should do the readings and go to/pay attention in class. If you do, it's an easy A. She's very willing to help out and gives you the opportunity to do rewrites. Her tests are easy, if you paid attention. Class isn't too interesting, but it's not too hard.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She grades extremely hard and requires you to do pointless busy work. I took this class online and there were no weekends or breaks. She's not very understanding of life events that happen either. Do not take this class with her.
Lots of reading in her class, in which they are on the midterm and final. She does everything she can to make sure students understand concepts and is available for them. Is also understanding for the most part when students need additional help (I've gotten an extension before). She challenges you to work hard and think about things.
She gives great feedback and her exams are quite easy. She did weekly responses to readings that takes place of essay questions you would typically see on an exam. This was MUCH appreciated when exams rolled around.
You should probably go to class because she takes attendance, but it won't kill you to miss because you just go over the reading. Make sure you do the weeklies, because that's pretty much your grade.
She is great. I loved her. She is very clear and helpful, and she works as hard as she can to make sure everybody succeeds if they put in enough effort. Very encouraging and I learned a lot from the class that I will use later on in my life and I feel like I'm a better person having had her class. I would highly recommend.
Brooke is one of the greatest professors I have had so far at CMU. At first she comes off as a little cold but through out the semester you will realize she is a badass lady. I will admit, the work is a little difficult but she gives incredible feedback. Great challenging class. Do not take this class is you are not willing to put in the work.
Brooke is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. The course had a significant amount of reading and writing to keep up with and I could see how some students fell behind. She also makes you work for your grade; this isn't an easy "A". Overall, Brooke really cares about her students and their success at CMU. I'd take her again in a heartbeat.
Dr. Harrison clearly outlines what is expected of you. There is a lot of reading, but she goes over it in class. The lectures are boring, but important because she gives participation points. She takes these points very seriously. Theres weekly papers and one big research paper. She gives good feedback on papers not bad for a WI
Harrison is a really sweet person, with that in mind she can be a bit catty especially if you are talking during her lecture. The weeklies are a pain but with that in mind get them done in the beginning and you will be okay. She frequently gives out extra credit for the tests as well as gives out full points for some weeklies. Tests are tough.
Brooke gave good feedback and was always there if you needed help. For every paper we did a peer group edit and because of that she always cancelled a class period. There were no tests and the book was used so rarely that you don't really need to buy it. If you put in the work, you'll do well.
Great professor! She gives feedback, reviews for every paper for every partso you can get it done right. AND she allows you to rewrite your paper if you want a better grade. Make sure you buy the Seagull and Culture book though! No exams or quizzes! She does do a few in class works that you have an hour to write a 2-page paper. Eeeek!
Brooke is very sweet and helpful to students who are willing to go the extra mile. Weekly writing assignments arent too bad once you get a hang of it. LOTS of reading. Poems, short stories, novels, plays, you name it, we were required to read it. Have to show up with the readings already read and notes on what you read.
she's very nice and always willing to talk. she is a tough grader but acts like she is not. expect to have to read about 50 pages of a novel for each class. The essays are harshly graded but they are 400-500 words and one 1250-1500 word. Low on writing for a WI.
By far my favorite professor I had this semester. The books she picked for this class were so interesting and papers were never too difficult. She has realistic expectations of her students and you can tell she really cares about her students.
Brooke is such a sweetheart. She is so caring, accessible, and always available if you have any questions. Even though sometimes her grading on papers can be tough, if you talk with her she always provides helpful guidance. I would definitely recommend taking a class with her.
I HATE english, literally my worst subject but Brooke Harrison is SOOO AMAZING!!! She gave me great feedback on my papers and helped me out so much. She did not grade super hard, she was not biased, I am an awful writer and she gave me many chances to fix my final papers and resubmit them. TAKE HER CLASS!!
I am an A student and I'm struggling to get a B in this class. There is SO much reading all short stories and poems in old english. 7 essays and a big 500 point research paper. She never goes over the prompts and everything is very vague. If you email her she isn't helpful and usually says "check blackboard". Pop quizzes at least once a week. RUN.
Brooke is such an amazing English professor. I am not good at poetry at all but she made it so easy to understand. Barely any writing besides weekly 400 word reflections over reading and one paper at the end. Exams are hard but she lets you use open notebook. She is truly my favorite professor I've had so far because she cares about her students!
Lots of reading, but that should be expected for a literature class. Weekly papers, but they get easier once you get the hang of them and Brooke gives great feedback. Two exams, challenging but open note. One major research paper, but Brooke lets you revise for a better grade. Great and very helpful professor. I actually ended up loving this class!
Brooke was always very accessible outside of class, and was extremely caring. While she can be a tough grader, she always gives good feedback to improve your papers and she allows revisions. Even though you have to work for your grade, overall it makes you a better writer.
I LOVE this professor. Honestly, I tried so hard to pick a class that she was teaching again for next semester, sadly it didnt work with my schedule. Shes one of the most caring professors Ive ever had, good lectures, gives great feedback, and is overall just interested in how youre doing.
Brooke is a very very hard grader. We got chances to revise our papers, so that is good. Also there is so much reading, I'm about 3 books behind. Over Thanksgiving break we had to write a 7 page rough draft and read over 100 pages.
Professor Harrison is very funny and is caring about each person in the class. There is reading homework almost every night but it's not too hard. Get ready for lots of poetry and essays about themes. But overall, this class is fairly easy as long as you do your work. She will give pop quizzes about the readings too.
I enjoyed this class for it being English. We were expected to read before each class where she randomly gave us pop quizzes on the readings. Open note tests and only three papers the whole semester. She also has a good sense of humor and actually cares if you are struggling and tries to help out.
Very nice lady. Very accessible for help outside the classroom, although I haven't needed it. 4 papers. No exams. Chance for revisions to up your grade. Read 2 books although you only really need to read two. I wouldn't read they say/I say even though I did mostly.
Dr. Harrison is a great professor. She gives great and timely feedback on papers and projects, which always have very clear instructions. She is an average grader and gives you plenty of chances to make up extra points. Would definitely recommend.
Brooke is great. She makes class simple, gives you guides on how to get things done, and really wants you to improve. Give her your best work and she will see that you tried.
She's is a great English prof (and I hate English). She's very kind and flexible with due dates. She's also good at teaching the concepts and skills required for each paper and the in-class essays are a breeze. She focusing on teaching and developing skills rather than stressing us out. 10/10 would recommend!!
Brooke is my favorite English professor I have had at Central. She is very understanding if you need to miss class, however, participation is mandatory. Her grading scale is very clear, and she lets you resubmit assignments if you're unsatisfied with your grade. She also doesn't make you take a final if you're happy with your final grade.
Dr. Harrison is one of my favorite professors at Central. She is so caring and personable. She makes the class interesting and relatable, and I loved the little community she created in our class. I would absolutely recommend her for any class you can take with her.
She told my class during the beginning of the semester that you have to try and you have to work for it and you'll get a good grade. And she's very helpful outside of the classroom.
I love Brooke Harrison! She is my favorite professor at CMU and cares about her students. You have a few big papers but she will help you along the way especially if you ask for help. I took her for ENG 101 as well and the class was easy but not too easy where you felt like it was pointless. Do not buy all of the books because you will no use them.
Great prof, assigns lots of reading toward the beginning of the semester but it's doable. Lets you revise every paper you write for a higher grade, so there's really no way you can fail. Attendance isn't "mandatory" but your grade will reflect it if you skip all the time. Class discussions are helpful. Very responsive to emails and questions.
She can be sarcastic sometimes and come off rude
Provides excellent feedback. Three papers and regular discussion boards required. The McGraw textbook is needed so definitely purchase/rent it as there is a significant amount of reading. The second book isn't worth purchasing and nothing is assigned from it. I would take future courses with Professor Harrison.
She is such a caring professor. She gives great feedback and allows for revision on papers. The textbooks are necessary but she tries really hard to keep the lectures interesting and inspiring. She is super approachable after class and I wish I could have her again.
Professor Harrison does give plenty of writing assignments and readings but it is all beneficial to the students. (make sure you buy all the books) The class is like a workshop and She is very understanding but she does take attendance so make sure you actually go to class or else you may not be able to revise your essays.
With the English background that I have, I thought 101 would be an easy A. Instead, I found that Dr. Harrison met me where I was with my writing ability and challenged me to improve. She is one of the most caring professors I've had at CMU and is someone I found myself having genuine conversations with. If you give her the chance to help, she will.
Brooke is a wonderful professor and cares about her student's success. She takes the time to work with you and is good at responding to emails.
One of the most professional, respectful, and caring professors I've had. I loved taking this course with Dr. Brooke!
Brooke was by far my most impacting professors. As a first-generation freshman on campus, she always made available office hours for her students and she gave great feedback on every paper handed back. I was never confident in my writing until I had her. I also had her with the pandemic going on and she would even FaceTime me at any hour to help.
Dr. Harrison was a very kind professor. I felt like she truly cared for all her students. She gave clear feedback about the papers and allowed people to rewrite for better scores. There were only 3 papers and she gave very fair deadlines for all of them. She was one of my favorite professors!
She is never prepared and Bb is a mess. She isn't very clear and class is very boring. Not hard and she seems like a nice person but she is not a very good prof.
This class was good, and there was a lot of writing. She provided great feedback to help you improve your papers. I enjoyed this class and became a better writer because of it.
She will work with you so improve and use the writing center.
Cool professor. Seems chill. But my god, the class is so politically polarizing. For example our books for this semester are Everyone should be a feminist and The new Jim Crow Tell me youre at a liberal university without telling me youre at a liberal university.
I am awful at English; I am a first-generation freshman and CMU, and she is just amazing. She gives you lots of feedback and genuinely wants to see you do well. I thought I was going to struggle the most in this class but halfway through the semester I have a 99%. Take her class!
You write 3 big essay, so like 1 each month and you do a lot of extra graded work for these papers. The professors fine she just makes a lot of work and talks a lot.
The class wasn't interesting, and Dr. Harrison sometimes acted passive aggressively towards students.
This professor was good, but the class was kind of boring. It was hard to stay focused at times. There were three large papers that were difficult, but there is clear criteria that is expected on them. Grades are pretty much based on your papers, so you have to do well on them. Overall, not a bad professor.
I took this class online over the summer and she was great. We had discussion boards weekly along with 3 papers which helped to boost grades. We had 3 papers. I accidentally submitted a wrong paper for my 3rd peer review and she was so understanding and even looked over it for me. Would definitely take a class with her again
We had 3 major papers to write which we were given clear directions and expectations for each. I really liked the amount of time we were given for each assignment. We also had weekly discussion boards to do but also had plenty of time to work on those. Dr. Harrison was also very accessible outside of class. A lot of work but an enjoyable class.
The class was very straightforward and structured which I ended up liking. Brooke is a good professor as she sends weekly reminders out on stuff that is due and when it is due. She also provides good feedback on papers. There are 3 main papers you have to write and then weekly discussion boards. My only complaint is she was hard to get ahold of.
She was a great professor! Gave helpful feedback.
The feedback for the papers was great, very clear on what to fix and where it is in the paper. Grading also seemed very light. She communicated to the class often and seemed invested in the overall performance of the class.
This professor grades on if she likes you or not. I genuinely thought that this was a myth about English teachers before her. If she gets a bad vibe about you for some reason there goes your grade even though you had other professors help review your papers. Please do not take her you don't know if she will like you or not!
She is semi-retired, so she has a lot of experience teaching. She gives the most in-depth and thoughtful feedback I have ever received. Nearly every line of an essay would be highlighted with an issue, but I would still get a B+ or higher. She allows you to rewrite every paper, so there's not reason to get less than a B in this class. Great person.
