She is tough and work has to be perfect, wont help you grade papers you need to figure it out on your own. always checking grammar and if not perfect its a F!
Sure the class is hard, where you have to write too many papers. In Ms. Ballard's class you just have to go to class, and study. I struggled on a some Papers, but i think i am better prepared for it. Thanks Gita.
Yes she is a tough grade but if you follow her rubric 100% you will pass each paper with an A. The key is to follow the rubric exactly as it says, don't try and do your own thing. You must read the text book before each class and you usually have a paper to write each week, usually about a page or 2.
Too much of a perfectionist she will not help you if you don't follow the rubric. Better off going to a writing center or tutor then to her.
Brooke is a hard professor, you need to do all of the work, read all of what is in the syllabus. Be in class and participate, go to every extra credit she gives. Make sure there are no miss spell words on essays and that they make since. MLA she would get you!!! Make sure you get all of the books that are require. Would not recommend her!
She has an amazing personality and can be very fun but she is a very tough grader. You need to earn your grade. It is not an easy class and you need to participare. If you show interest, do things right and on time you will totally pass it. If you want an easy class better look for another professor. At the end you end up with good knowledge.
Professor Ballard definitely expects a lot out of her students which is great BUT she does NOT give her students a CLEAR understanding on what she expects exactly she'll tell you what she wants like two days before an essay is due. Also, she is horrible at explainingteaching new topics, and she is no help at all! She can be very rude for no reason
Great teacher but expects you to be there and do things as instructed.
Will never take a class with this professor again. We had to do a 10 page paper at the end of the year and I recieved a 45 on it. Completely ridiculous. Do not take this class, you will regret it.
She's and extremely tough grader. I have always been really good at English, always got A's but with her.... 5-10 grammar errors automatically 20 points off. Not easy !!!! Barely passed. BARELY! Her attitude is alright she can be cool Sometimes but do not let that fool you! Don't take if you can (:
Expects everything to be absolutely perfect especially in papers. Does not explain her expectations well on rubrics. When a whole class gets failing grades on a paper that tells you that it isnt the students its the professor inability to teach the subject correctly. No help at all. DOES NOT MAKE THE CLASS INTERESTING AT ALL. Don't take her class
Can be rude for absolutely no reason at all. Comes across as if she encourages questions, and contacting her, but really she seems to be bothered by you contacting her. I emailed her to explain a situation and I received a one word response, three days later. Also she gives hardly any feedback at all, other than your wrong. Do not take this class!
Professor Ballard is a fantastic teacher with a very sarcastic sense of humor. She's a very tough grader, but as long as you pay attention to what she is asking of you, you will do just fine in her class. I loved having her class and she makes the class very interesting and fun.
I took this professor for the online English class. At first she seems nice, but she is actually very rude. On the first essay, no one in the class got above a D. During her class, she was not clear at all. She had a rubric but it was very vague. She also was not completely clear in her notes so I had to find it in our book but she would disagree.
Do not take this class with her.
Professor Ballard rules! I loved her class. She can be a tough grader at times, but if you follow her instructions, you will do just fine. She's so funny and easy to get along with. She is just the sweetest! I would take her again in a heart beat if I could.
GRAMMAR!! That's all she cares about, it doesn't matter if you have a good essay, if your grammar is horrible expect to fail. She doesn't care about the context, the only thing that matters to her is your grammar. Expect A LOT of essays. If you know your grammar is bad take another teacher!!
Professor Ballard is an excellent teacher! I took her 1301 course, and she was very clear about what she expected from us, as well as what to expect from her. She's a tough grader, but it's worth it. Proofreading is a MUST, and she cares about class participation. Everything you learn prepares you for future classes. I took her 1302 class as well.
Kind of moody and not very helpful. I'm sure some students do well in that class, but from the information she gave us, there aren't many. There is very little room for error, and if you miss a deadline, just withdraw. She pretty much tells you to.
Fair grader, meet the deadlines, follow the instructions, actually put in effort and you'll get a good grade. Would definitely take her 1302 class, or this one again.
It's simple, do what you are expected to do: show up on time, do your work, don't let her see the deer in the headlights look on your face and that's it. She is fair with grading and has a unique way of making class time more than another boring literature class.
Do not take her class she is very rude and doesn't know how to talk to her students. She will give you a lot of assignments and she is also not a good teacher and expects you to already know what she's talking about. Don't take her unless you really have to.
Whatever you do, don't take this class. College has granted me the opportunity to come across some really awesome proffesors, as well as some not so good ones. However Ballard was my first proffesor ive had that is extremely rude. The way she spoke to some students was unbelievable. She is by far the worst teacher I've had. Your GPA will suffer.
I had her for 1301, she is a very tough grader! Do not expect to pass the class with a A. She is very picky and shows no mercy when it comes to grading and evaluating assignments. The readings are a must since she quizzes you and its a grade. Also punctualit is key, if your more than 10 min late your absent for the entire day. I wouldn't reccommend
Awful Very condescending, picky, disrespectful. Will not let you use resources during class, even if they are required to take the class anyway. I do NOT recommend.
I will never recommend her to anyone. She is a ridiculous grader. If you take her class, be ready for her to pick apart EVERY tiny thing in your essays. I like challenges, but this was impossible. You must come to class everyday otherwise you will not pass. You will be completely on your own in this class because she will not help you at all.
I took her class in the summer. She grades mostly on grammar, hardly ever gives out an A for major papers, you have to really wow her for that. Her feedback is good, just short and sometimes hard to understand. She has a bad attitude, comes off as rude. Her class is definitely a challenge. Find another professor unless this is your last resort.
Very temperamental. She would send messages to the class how we are awful and don't care about our grades, we must not be paying attention. Very rude and unprofessional. Rips apart your work but eventually gave constructive feedback on the last assignments. Many papers due each week. Assignments and expectations are vague. FIND ANOTHER PROFFESSOR!!
You will pass the class long as you do the work. Overall the class wasn't great not was it terrible. It was just okay.
She's really not that bad, but her directions are really vague. It's really hard to get an A, due to her instructions. If she would be more specific on what she wants done and what shes grading on, it would increase the grades for the whole class. She has constructive criticism. It may sound aggressive, but I really don't think she means to be.
Isn't clear with assignment expectations Tells you to improve your work but doesn't tell you how to fix it
Professor Ballard is very sassy and comes off as rude. She gives tones of papers. There are 3 major papers and about 5 mini papers. APA is very important, 5 points off for every mistake. Very vague on instructions and is not very helpful when you try to ask her to clarify something. Do not take her, unless she is your last choice.
Long story short, there were 24 students at the beginning of my 8 week 1301 class, and we were down to 8 at the end. I understand making your students work for your grade, but Professor Ballard was impossible. She will critique everything, and take off points for simple errors. I would not recommend her to anyone, choose another professor.
Literally the hardest grader I have ever come across and probably takes pride in that.
Professor Thrift is entirely to vague with instructions especially to be a English teacher. For it to be a first year English class she should expect some errors multiple times. She grades very tough for honestly no reason when you ask for help she comes very annoyed. Dont take her class save yourself the time.
Professor Thrift is absolutely the hardest grader I have ever come across. I don't want to sound overdramatic, so I will tell you that she took off 10 points on one of my mini papers for writing Works Cited, instead of Work Cited when I only had one source. 10 points. Needless to say I dropped her class, and YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. 6 week online.
I took the class don't take it she is so rude. I dropped her class and she saw me in person and acted so surprised and asked me why I dropped her class man I kept walking and you know why too so ya worst class ever! Don't take if you're a 1st year student
This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. The criteria for grading is sort of vague, then she just grades subjectively anyway against the rubric half the time which is unfair. She is rude and extremely un-approachable, shes sarcastic and mainly likes to state how much smarter she is than the students. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Professor Thrift is a terrible professor, she is not clear on instructions and she grades harshly. She takes off major points for simple mistakes.
Extremely vague feedback, very unapproachable, grades too harsh for a first year English course.
Tough grader, her feedbacks are really vague.
Unclear in directions
dont waste your time or your money. unless you want a living hell of general teachings and specific grading, be my guest. she is a horrible teacher that cares more about if it is work instead of workS cited than the actual context of your paper. my biggest regret? dropping sooner.
This class was very difficult. I couldnt understand anything. Instructions were unclear. I wish this class went a lot smoother.
She is NOT hesitant to fail you. 100000000/10 WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
She took 30 point off for no period.
Doesn't give good feedback at all. Instructions for all assignments are very unclear. I took this class thinking it would be an easy way to get so classes out of the way before college and I ended up having to re take the class anyways. I would not recommend taking this class.
Professor Thrift is an EXTREMELY hard grader. She gave my class a vague rubric for an outline and gave every single person a 0 because she claimed we didn't listen to her. This is only one example of how she is one of the worst instructors I've ever had to deal with.
This course was simply awful. Professor Thrift's ENGL 1301 class is not a introductory writing course, but it rather is an MLA proficiency course. Her strict grading policies and angry tendencies fostered a terrible learning environment. She is inclined to present vague guidelines. I would suggest looking elsewhere for a decent professor.
She is the toughest grader Ive ever come across. Shes extremely rude in her feedback. This is supposed to be an introduction to writing , not whatever she thinks it is . DO NOT PICK THIS PROFESSOR
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!! By far the least helpful teacher EVER, even if you follow her guidelines step by step, she will still say its wrong with NO feedback besides it being wrong. If you want to keep your sanity stay away from this teacher.
Unnecessary amount of points taken off. Also poor feedback and interaction from the professor, as well as rude. The professor expects things to be perfect in a matter of time, rather to actually help and support the students comprehend the class. Overall, if you genuinely want to learn the lecture and develop, do not take this class.
Professor Thrift in my opinion is not as bad as everyone has said. Yes she is tough grader but what is expected of her students, they may not be able to do. She will work with you if you are willing.
I have NEVER had to write so many papers for a college course, even when taking required foreign language courses overseas. Her instructions are vague, her feedback isn't helpful, and her grading is extremely strict. I received a 60% on a quiz essay because of "incorrect spacing" on a work cited page.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! I had to drop the course English 1301 shouldnt be this hard she is a very tough grader. She doesnt allow any mistakes at all. First year English she shouldnt expect perfection. She cares more about MLA format than whats actual paper. She gives very rude feedback. She gives out failing grades for simple things.
DROP THIS CLASS WHILE YOU CAN!! Switch professors or something because she is literally the toughest grader and the.
She absolutely terrible! Do not take this professor; she is rude, unclear, and definitely unhelpful. If she was the last choice of professors, I would say wait until next semester.
I missed one homework assignment (article "quiz") because I was out of the country for 2 funerals. Prof Thrift left feedback with my 0-grade stating that missing 3 assignments would result in her dropping me from the course & she does not accept make-up work. Thanks, I hate it! :)
Reviews here are 100% true. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS YOU WILL REGRET IT. Do not use HER textbooks (seagull handbook) for reference you will fail. She has things specific to her class that's used nowhere else in the world. If you are not perfect at writing YOU WILL NOT PASS, not exaggerating. You can't make mistakes, you will fail. She doesn't teach
I am currently taking this professor and everything that I have thus far is accurate. She is a stiff grader, there is no room for mistakes, my grades are horrible because she is so critical on each paper, and I scored way above average on the placement test. She literally is so rude and condescending. I have emailed her several times with no help.
Professor Thrift is one of the worst instructors I've ever had in my education career. She is extremely rude, unforgiving, and a tough grader. When I emailed her about her instructions being unclear and that I felt as if the deductions she made on my paper were wrongful, she told me that I was lucky that she hadn't failed me! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Just terrible. If you need help she isn't too willing to do so. Sometimes you get the impression that you are annoying her. Thrift also grades waaaaaaaaay to harshly. It's like you have to be perfect to get at least a passing grade. I guess she forgets that we are still learning.
I emailed her because I felt that her deductions to my grade were unjust and her response was "why do you even care." Keep in mind she started the semester by telling us to "grade grub" and argue about grades we didn't like An absolute joke of an instructor that shouldn't be allowed near students. Many of her instructions were misleading.
WORST CLASS EVER look, if this is the only class open just wait till next semester or summer or any other option. She never wants to help and act like it's a bother, she grades disgustingly harsh, she just doesn't care. She will not tell you what you did wrong but will instead threaten to doc off more points for a repeated mistake. just don't do it
Worst class I have ever taken! Dont bother emailing her with questions, because you will not receive help... instead you will be belittled. Her instructions were very vague, and if you ask her to clarify she says obviously you didnt read my instructions. Her grading is EXTREMELY harsh. Her feedback is not helpful, but extremely rude. Just awful
I am an English major. I've excelled in English classes magnitudes more difficult than this one, but this class is ridiculous. I barely managed to pull out an A because English is my strength, but I can't imagine how this is for everyone else. This is an INTRODUCTORY class! And her feedback is extremely rude. Bad teacher, bad person.
Do not take her class , this is an intro class but its way harder than it should be and dont bother asking questions you wont get helpful answers.
Do NOT take Professor Thrift's intro English class. I can not stress enough how stressful she can make writing simple papers be. Even if you ace the content of your paper, be prepared to receive a 60 because it doesn't follow her version of the MLA format. She makes her own rules and expects you to know them.
Worst professor Ive had not helpful at all ! Really rude and unprofessional.
This professor refers to herself in third person, creates her own "Thrift" rules that she creates as though an English teacher can just make changes to the English language. She does not give clear due date disclosure on d2l. She is beyond hard at grading and is really heavy on work on top of condescending. The whole class hated her. RUN!!
Professor Thrift has her own MLA format and in text ciation rules. She is a heavy grader and if you ask questions you will not get a clear answer. She does give specifcs on her requirments for her papers. She just tells you to refer back to her notes. On top of all that, she has decided to go on vacation when class isn't over for another week!
I have never struggled so much in a class before. she shows no mercy. i reached out to her copious amounts of times telling her i was having a really hard time navigating her class, basically begging her for help/guidance- her response, "do what you think is best". she is extremely condescending and offers no help. do not take her class.
DO NOT take this class. She is a TOUGH grader and only grades your paper on thing like Thrift MLA rules (her own made up rules) and if your work cited page is formatted correctly. If you ask questions her response is to look at class notes, not helpful at all. This is an introductory class and she grades like we are professional writers. RUN!!!!!
This teacher is HORRIBLE! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She makes a freshman-level community college English course a weed-out course. She doesn't teach, she gives one-word responses, she doesn't redline so you can't improve on your essays, and she changed the MLA formatting to her own "Thrift" style which doesn't meet MLA standards. TERRIBLE TEACHER!!
I had a 100 until the final when I got a 90 that dropped my grade to a 99. If you're not a strong writer DON'T take this class. If you are, make sure to write how she wants you to: read the instructions and rubrics carefully, read every comment on the notes and during lectures as thoroughly as possible, and DON'T miss due dates, and ASK THE LIBRAR-
Before turning in, check off: that your paper meets Thrift's MLA standards (look at the slideshow), that you've followed ALL of the instructions, check FIPDA for all quotes, check the rubric, send to librarian in a docx. form and make sure your paper is either a doc., docx., or pdf., etc. (check syllabus) AND READ THE ENTIRE SYLLABUS! ss this!
Student Review: Professor Thrift expects you to write a certain way yet gives horrible/vague feedback on your errors on each assignment. It is still possible to get decent grade in this class, just make sure you check that your paper meets her criteria listed on her slideshows. Overall she is a bad prof and I wouldn't recommend her to anybody.
Terrible Teacher, gives you bad grades over the smallest of mistakes when this is supposed to be a basic english class. It is hard to know what exactly she wants you to do when she gives you an assignment just overall very bad teacher and would never take a class with her she should not be teaching.
DO NOT TAKE! She is a really tough grader and she changes the MLA rules and calls it Thrift Style this makes things very confusing. She also doesnt leave room for you to learn and improve, one mistake and youll most likely get a zero on that assignment. Overall, I think she makes this class way harder than it should be, avoid at all costs.
Be prepared for a lot of MLA. Really tough grader, so make sure to check everything twice. Feedback can be vague. She will answer your questions when you email her, but make sure to try to figure it out on your own first to receive more helpful advice. READ THE SYLLABUS! She's a good professor, just be ready to work for your grade.
She is a very bad teacher. I would never forget how she made me feel the first semester in college. She made me feel like such a failure and I even cry after receiving her response on my paper. She doesn't respect her students and has this attitude superiority. I don't know why people like her go into teaching and how could the school hire her
Prof. Thrift offers good advise when you've made it clear that you have done the work and reading but are still struggling. She's not always consistent with spotting mistakes in papers, does not always provide enough feedback, and I think is a tough grader. I think she gives appropriate grades on papers and makes her students work for good grades.
I took this class in June of 2020. She is very tough but fair. If you do what is asked of you, you will get an A. That being said, she ask A LOT from you. It all comes down to this. She is a professor for a reason. If you want to become a stronger writer and be prepared for a4 year school, then I would take this class.
This professor is a tough grader and rude when you ask her questions about assignments. She doesn't allow mistakes and I would never recommend her. Be prepared for failure. She expects you to write as if you should know how to write professionally. She gives no second chances and not very helpful. I had to retake this class with another professor.
I was so excited to start my first semester in college, that was until I took her. she grades horrible. I don't feel like she even gives you a chance to ask for help nor to actually "Learn" she just expects you to know everything, which is very sad. even more when we pay for these classes.. even more, sad to say I will have to retake this class.
AWFUL!! She has changed MLA to "Thrift's Rules," does not mark up your papers, her graded rubrics are vague at best. Condescending. Expects graduate level papers. Does not teach or correct. Emailed with a question about an essay due and got a response after due date that said, "Do whatever you need to do to complete the assignment." Waste $ & time!
Expects you to know everything from the start , failed every single essay even with the help of others and professionals because she makes her own rules . Do NOT recommend!
She was the absolute worst! She was inaccessible for almost the entire semester due to her being on maternity leave and that's fine but you know there's an issue with this professor when I was getting all As and B with the substitute teacher we had in the beginning of the semester but once professor Thrift came back she gave me 19s, 20s on all hw
The worst professor I have ever had.. As an entry level course, she expected you to know everything and if you didn't, she was no help and would dock your grades for it. She does not teach and never responds to emails, she'll only redirect you to students for help in her own course. Her class is absolutely rancid, I would never recommend her.
She was a terrible professor because she had in her syllabus from day one in a rude manner that I dont except any late work at all or extra credit so dont ask me to bump up your grade because why would I do it for you which is a rude way of putting it when you ask for help she says go back to the syllabus and read but arent you the teacher
Worst professor I've ever had! There's only about 8 assignments within the entire semester and she will not help you with any of it. Any time I would email her to ask her a question, she would always respond back rudely to just refer to the syllabus. I've never seen a professor so unwilling to help her students. Please don't take.
Taking this class was absolute hell. Theres only 5 essays. The first essay I turned in she gave me a 0 bc I plagiarized, although I didnt and had everything cited as it shouldve been. The third essay I did she also gave me another 0 bc I shouldve used thrifts MLA a format she came up with. My fourth essay she gave another 0 bc it was a pdf.
Very difficult on grading papers and will not help you or give your feedback on them! She also makes up her own rules as well. Very rude and will never advise anyone to take her class
Professor Thrift class was very difficult for me since she created her own MLA format. If you did not put a citation (one) citation on your essays she will automatically give you a zero. She will call it " Plagiarism" even though it was your own words.
Prof Thrift had great feedback for papers and rough drafts. They followed the class schedule to a T and responded to questions I had in a timely manner. This course is just papers, so I recommend having rough draft for extra credit for every paper. Utilize the links provided in modules to learn citation and formatting. Great communicator
This teacher is the worst. One thing incorrect can fail you. I failed this class for trying my hardest. I've even used other professors and tutors to help with my paper. Even my last year professor wasn't much help since I still got a 0 for not doing it her way. Avoid her at all costs.
Ms. Thrift is a good English teacher, she cares about her student's and always make sure if you know what your doing, i do recommend take her class.
She is actually an incredible professor, caring and knowledgeable. I would recommend to take her class.
All assignments are papers or essays, for which extra credit is offered, and a good amount of prep time is provided before the assignment is actually due. The professor is helpful and caring, and provides good resources and feedback. There is a textbook, but you will only need to check it out a couple of times.
Professor Thrift made this class amazing. In high school I was never good at writing essay's or coming up with ideas for things to write. Thrift made it super easy and explained very well in detail on what I was supposed to write about. This class was always fun to come too where she balanced having a good class environment with fun and work time.
As an English teacher she is one of the best. Professor Thrift is like a diamond in the dirt, she is actually a very helpful teacher and really cares for her student. No matter what excuses of late work, she understands that life is not perfect. Overall, other students are dull minded to not notice her generosity and enthusiasm for learning.
she's really good at with international students
Professor thrift is really kind to her students, and she helped me out when I struggled with learning the modules. I would take her again, for sure. :)
She will support you as long you stay persistent in the class.
This professor was amazing. She is so caring and if I could I would rate her 10/5. Her class is straight forward. Take her !!
She does a good job on making sure everyone understands the lessons and is willing to work with students' personal schedules to make sure you get a good grade on the material even when you miss the deadline. She also organizes the material and lessons in a way where it's easy to understand and work with.
All the bad reviews on this professor are from students who never did any work and were surprised that their lazy garbage work didn't get them an A in the class. Thrift is an amazing professor. She cares for her students so much. The bad reviews on this professor are false and written from students that have a low IQ. so please don't listen to them
Don't believe all the negative comments about Mrs. Thrift, she's such a great teacher! She helped me to improve my writing skills. She gives you a LOTS of extra credit opportunities. She provides clear and detailed instructions and responds quickly all your answers. I would take her again! Definitely one of the best teachers I took this semester.
Great professor no complaints here. We did use the textbook, but a great professor would recommend it.
I don't get why many have bad experiences with professor Thrift, because she's pretty chill. She answers emails fast if you have any questions. She also has many extra credits this semester and as long as you do it, that's extra 10 points to your essays (which are major grades) per extra credit you do. I plan to take her class again for ENGL1302.
Dont believe the bad reviews! I took her 8-week course, and as fast as it was, it was so easy because Prof. Thrift made it that way. She answers emails quickly and thoroughly. She is super nice, and I dont understand why her ratings are so low. It is a lot of writing, but it's English so its expected, but she helps you through it, so its a breeze.
Do not believe in the reviews Professor Thrift is one of the most genuine Professors I have ever had an amazing woman and because of her, I fell in love with Writing again. Just do the work on time and put in the effort you will see amazing results.
I took Professor Thrift's online English course. You will excel if you follow all her instructions, turn in the homework on time, do any extra credit assignments, and don't plagiarize. She also has excellent feedback after assignments and is readily available to answer students' questions. I highly recommend students take English courses with her.
Professor Thrift was amazing! She gave great feedback on my papers and gave me the confidence to be a better student. She literally gives you an APA and MLA example paper to download so there is absolutely no way to mess up your papers. Her syllabus is very clear. Follow it and you will have an A.
