Bruce is a very good teacher. He dosent assign HW and gives you plenty of take home time to do essays. He gives A and F essay examples to help you. He is really kick back, and very friendly.
I attempted English 50 four times and would drop out because it was to boring. Bruce Anders is an excellent Professor and made English enjoyable to learn.
I can't recommend Mr. Anders enough. He is one of the nicest, most helpful and accommodating teachers I've ever had. He loves what he does and it shows. He makes class fun and interesting. He will bend over backwards to help you if you show some initiative and willingness to learn. He is definitely my favorite teacher thus far.
Bruce Anders is a great English professor and person. He'll do absolutely anything to help you and he loves his subject. Understanding, intelligent, humorous and easily approachable. Take him for ANY english classes you may need, you certainly won't regret it. Help promote his name as well! Tell your friends.
Anders is an easy teacher. He lets you rewrite any of your essays for a better grade and most of the material we read is somewhat interesting. However, Anders makes you watch him correct grammer every class, which is both boring and torture!
He shouldn't be teaching, he does not have the patient for students. He does not have knowledge to teach, wasting student's time. he let students leave 2 hours earlier in the class when it should be a 2.5 hours class...not responsible at all...
Anders is a great professors do not listen to the person who commented on 11/04/08. He let's us out early for the better not the worse. Who would actually argue about that... hmmm.... i had him for English 50 and English 101.
Great teacher
mr.anders is the coolest teacher. he's easy and he'll do whatever it takes for you to pass. respect him and he'll give it back to you...
helpful ansd very nice teacher. try to help you to improve your abilities. awsome professor.
i loved anders he is such an awesome teacher and very helpfull. I took him for english 50 and 101 and i wouldn't have wanted any other teacher.
strict teacher yet very easy. loves teaching. Great guy!!
I took his Eng. 101 class. He is very helpful. You can show him your rough drafts and he will show you how to fix it so you can get an A. I would definitely recommend him.
very lenient. helps you when asked. attendance is a must and tardiness he hates. would take his class over anyday. recommend to any1 who likes to learn.
i took his english 50 over spring semester. it was a really good class, he makes it fun, he also is there for each of his students if they want to improve. he really loves to help others move forward.
An awesome teacher, no doubt in that, but you need to follow what he says and turn in all assignments on time. he will not accept late assignment even 5 seconds after due date, don't ever mess with that. you need to be good in math while taking his class becuase his grading is like calculus equations. rewrite assignment are allowed in his class.
Wonderful teacher. grades essays by calculating max. of words & min. of words. if the divisor is 5 (A=max words) then it's a 1/5 of a point off. if you make a lot of mistakes, it won't hurt you that bad because it's only a 1/5 of a point. it's not calculus. Pay attention to what he says. Easily approcachable, nonjudgmental. Im in his Eng 50 now.
Can't wait to take Him for English 101
Lets class out early most days. Class content is clear and extremely helpful. Professor cares about the student and is conscious about learning abilities of students.
Prior to taking his class, Ive always sucked at English. I got an A in his class. Hes very helpful, very clear, repeats himself but doesn't like to but who does? You can rewrite all your work b4 deadline. All u have to do is PAY ATTENTION. Hes funny, makes it interesting, helps you grasp it & uses great analogies. Learn from your mistakes & apply
Very down to earth teacher. He does let the class out early but make sure you do the homework. Though it is not very hard he is very picky with punctuation on essays. Do the work and come to class and there should be no reason not to pass. I would take him for another class if i could!
he's really a great teacher, really nice guy...very very helpful. he wants the whole class to pass.
Passing his class. Without a doubt trust me!!!!
I will never regret taking an awsome teacher like Bruce Anders himself. Recommended!!!
takes the cake for teachers!! i dont think i'll ever find another one who is so willing to help, care and loves what he does!!! but watch out more than 8 and absences and 70% you've stuck out.
He is a best teacher in the world
The best teacher who cares if you ask for help he will do all he can do to give you a chance to pass the class not only a great teacher but a great person MJC should be very thankful that Bruce Anders is on staff
Teacher is great. Just ask and he'll help you with whatever you need. He spells out whatever it is that is expected of you and very clearly. Would take him again in a heartbeat if he taught 101.
Very good teacher and very helpful to everything for his students. Recommended!!!!!
A rugged individualist, demanding, and very professional.Helpful to extremes, you have merely to ask. His ez rules are well defined, and he will adhere to them at your expense if you fail to pay attention to them. The absolute model of the perfect professor,he never had a bad word for anyone. He is a very cool, competent guy...Thanks Very Much Bruce! :)
Bruce is the best English teacher you can ever find at MJC!!! He's extremely helpful when you need help. Won't ever expect more than you know. TRUST me you wont regret taking him. I didn't, thanks bruce. You helped out a lot. =)
Mrs. Anders was extremely helpful and understand that students have lives outside of class and that things do happen. Very kind, funny in a sarcastic way and helpful. Great teacher. Helps a lot with grammar.
He doesn't believe anymore excuses. After 3 absences, you are dropped. If you dont passs the final, you fail. If you fail an in-class essay, must ace the rest of essays as well as the final. When doing the in-class essays, must write on the blue part for brainstorming and notes for points. You dont have to be the writer for this class.
Great Professor. I learned a lot, mainly because I applied myself and put effort in!
Great guy. Very helpful and he will stay with you after class if you need the extra time. amazing person, and he is more than just a professor. Beautiful on the inside and out. Do the reading, show up to class and you will pass :) and if you need help, its always offered :D i love bruce!
One of the best teachers at MJC. Very funny and a down to earth guy. loves to go on tangents and is more than helpful for those who want it. His syllabus and announcements were crystal clear, and he will get upset if you ask him questions that are stated on the syllabus. Overall if you are considering taking an English class, he's you guy. Awesome!
BRUCE ROCKS!! Hes so inspirational with his stories! He didn't become a professor until he was 50! But he certainly doesn't look it. His class was very easy and he was very helpful. He would let us out early every day but stay after class and ask him any questions (You get participation points!!)
One of the best English professors at MJC! I relate to Mr. Anders because he started at the lowest english and worked his way up! There are certain tips to passing his class. 1. turn in your papers on time 2. read the ruberic sheet he attaches to the back of your returned assignments 3. stay for the grammar corrections he does on the projector!
He is very dedicated and can relate to you on a personal level. He motivates you and makes you want to do well. I really enjoyed his class. It's not hard AT ALL. You just need to pay attention. He breaks everything down for you exactly as it should be. Great class for learning how to right an essay easily. I recommend him for sure! He's a great guy
GREAT TEACHER!! HE REALLY DOES CARE AND HE IS A GREAT MOTIVATOR, AND VERY HELPFUL. I COULDN'T HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER ENGLISH TEACHER. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS SHOW UP, PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS, READ YOUR ENGLISH BOOK AND TAKE NOTES. EASY PASS!
Mr.Anders was by far one of the best teachers I have had in a long time. His instructions in class are clear and simple. He offers plenty of time for his students to ask questions if needed. I plan on taking his english 101 class as well.
VERY CONFUSING & HE DOESN'T EVEN TEACH AT ALL! HE'S A TOUGH GRADER AND IF YOU STRUGGLE WITH ENGLISH, AVOID HIM!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad I had taken Anders for my english 50 class in my spring '13 semester! He's super helpful, easy, and lenient on grading. Had me cracking up at some of the stories he had told our class! Would recommend him to anybody! Bruce is awesome!
GREAT teacher. Really cares about students, explains essays really well. Honestly the best teacher at mjc ! TAKE HIM YOU WONT REGRET IT
I did not like this teacher at all I would not recommend taking him at all
Absolutely AMAZING teacher! Such a great motivator as well as teacher. If you think he's "confusing" you didn't stay after class, or make an effort to see him for extra help. He always ends the class an hour early for anyone that has any questions about an assignment. Totally recommend taking his class!
He's a great guy, very helpful indeed. Although, be prepared for a new set of teaching methods. He is very unorthodox, but you will have plenty of chances to make up points later in the semester. I started off right out of the gate with a D because I had no clue how to write compare and contrast essays. I'm doing much better now. Easy A class
He is very clear about the assignments, he gives A examples and F examples, he is always available to answer questions and offer help. Improved my writing in other classes as well from taking Anders' course. I would def recommend taking him for Eng50
He's honestly so dedicated to his students and helping them pass and succeed! I can't say enough about how amazing he is and easy to talk to!
Nice guy. Often cut class a little early to give everyone an opportunity to ask questions. He gives A and F examples for everything. Very clear grading criteria. Extremely helpful even if he unintentionally comes off as condescending at times.
It's boggling to even see bad reviews on Mr. Anders, but anyway definitely has been my favorite professor at mjc since being here. He's very dedicated to his students and gives you inspiration on succeeding. I was lucky enough to have him for both English 50 & 101. He's very clear on rules and on the essays that are assigned. He's a must take.
Great class, wish he taught Eng101 as well. Class itself is not mandatory but he does take role. Being absent marks down your participation grade. You can show up for a minute and tell him you are there and you will be marked present. If you ever miss class, do not worry, he has literally everything on his Blackboard. Expect detailed return essays.
Great teacher really care for his students amazing feed back started off with a D on assessment exam went on to get a B in the class I think I could have gotten an A if I had tried just a little harder ..... made English 50 easy... feeling confident to go 2 english 101... if ur bad with english or writing Bruce Anders is a must take
Good teacher, You must know how to integrate quotes and write in present tense. He will help you and gives you great advice after class. Started out with a D and finished with a B. If you put effort and show him you want to pass he'll work with you and tell you where you need improvement.
Mr. Anders is the best english 50 professor to take at MJC if you really need help preparing for english 101. He's all about improvement and strives to keep things clean cut and to the point. *ask questions after class on a one on one level to get more help* it helps a bunch and he's more then welling to help.
Professor Anders is a great teacher and truly cares about his students. He puts in so much effort to be a great teacher to his students. If you participate and ask a good question he will give you points. He is also very clear when giving his students feedback from papers and papers are returned in a timely matter. Bottom line: Great teacher.
I'm currently taking Professor Anders English 50 and I wish I can take him again for 101. He is very respectful, cares about his students and prepares us for English 101. Pretty much all the directions for all essays are on the blackboard. He gives great feedback on returned essays. He is very personable and will return your emails.
He a trerrible teacher. He has not time management. Doesn't give out proper material for the lecture. All he does is just lecture on and on. i don't recommend if your not a lecture type of person.
He is a nice human being, but his class is difficult to learn in. There's 6 essays the whole semester and that is basically your grade with some small participation points. He gives you examples of good and bad essays but when its time to write your own it is still difficult.
Mr. Anders is the best professor I ever had. He is so amazing. His lectures are very interesting, clear and to the point. He tries his best to help his students. Attendance in this class is required. If you want an A, always show up in class and pay attention. I passed the first essay and he promoted me to ENG50. I definitely recommend him. gudluck
Mr. Anders is a great professor. If you're confused about something, he gives you feedback. His essay corrections are very thorough, which helps when you need to improve your essay grades. You must ask for help if you need it.
Professor Anders is my all time favorite English teacher. Very passionate! He cares about all of his students and wants everyone to be successful. The only way that someone won't pass this class is because of their own laziness. Professor Anders will help you with any questions after class. I would definitely take him again. He is the BEST!!! :)
This teacher is a little hard when it comes to grading. Be prepared to work very hard during the last few weeks of the semester. Textbooks are required. There is no extra credit in this class. :(
Bruce Anders is a great professor, but teaches things differently from many other English teachers. He's gonna prepare you to write and take my advice, read the books, take as many notes as you can, and don't be lazy. It's very easy to fall behind in his class so stay on top of everything. He's a funny guy and is always there for help.
Professor Anders is a great teacher. His teaching criteria is very unique, and he does everything to prepare you for english 101. You must be willing to ask questions, and participate if you want to be successful in his class. He gives good feedback for those who ask, and he is very organized and clear about what he expects from his students.
Bruce is a really great professor. I took him for Eng. 50 and Eng. 100 and I've gain so much knowledge from him. He is very understanding and listens to his students. He is passionate about English and wants everyone to accomplish their goals. If you need extra help he is willing to help. I really wish he taught Eng 103. Bruce I admire you!!!!!!!!!
Considerate, Compassionate and Courageous are the right words to explain Profes. Anders. He is a professor who cares about his students and cares about the success of his students. This class provides step-by-step instructions on how to write your papers and if followed can be an easy success. Attendance pays off and ask questions. You WILL succeed
All that we did in class was work on the 4 essays that you have to do during the semester. He does not waste your time at all in class! He makes sure that everyone gets what he is saying in order for you to pass the class. Very caring and funny. The only important thing is to ask questions and turn essays on time!!
He is a wonderful professor. He is always willing to help when you don't understand something and he stays after class to answer any questions He gives examples of an A essay and an F essay. He posts videos that will assist you with your essay. I will definitely will recommend him.
Anders is the best English teacher and a true gem to MJC. He is caring, and TRULY wants every student to succeed! Gives clear direction and video tutorials for each paper. Follow his videos and its simple! Gives great feedback on each essay. Easy A! He stays after each class to help students one on one. This man is an amazing professor! take him!
Took Bruce for English 49, 50 and 100. I have never been a good writer and learned a lot on his classes. For English 49 it was my last chance and his techniques helped and I was able to pass it. Those techniques also helped me to pass my other two English classes. He also really cares about his students passing the class.
Bruce has helped me pass Eng 49-101. He is a very good teacher and he takes the time each day after class to answer any questions you may have. He also cares about his students dearly and goes beyond for them. He fights for our rights to make sure we are academically successful. The is a highly respected professor. One of my favorites.
Mr Anders is the BEST there is! I love this professor and his willingness to help his students. I've taken his class for English 50, and enjoyed every bit of it. He works very hard to make the class easy for his students. He's always there for you if you need help. Turn your essays on time because he has zero tolerance for excuses. Good luck!
Professor Anders is simply the BEST. He's very loving and cares about his students. Stay after class and ask questions, and he'll be more than happy to help. Submit your essays on time because he won't tolerate late work. He sacrifices so much, and makes the material easy for his students. If you don't pass this class, then it's on you head.
He is an amazing person. He seems to care for everyone if you care for your work HOWEVER by far the HARDEST GARDER EVER. Every little mistakes adds up for him. I would not recommend him if you struggle with English. I had all the extra help I needed had extra people help grade my paper and my qualities were still not enough for him. Not recommended
Hes the most caring professor ever! He goes above and beyond for every student. However, dont take this for granted! He goes over all the material needed for your essays, on top of that incase you spaced out he has videos of what he went over ! Not only that! You have an entire month to do an essay! Hint* if you have a question JUST ASK!
Anders was a good teacher and helped me out. He gives a lot of feedback and always tries to help his students. If you don't succeed, it's not him, it's you. Great teacher loved him.
Professor Anders is beyond amazing. He makes sure each and every student gets their questions answered. Highly recommend him.
THEEEE best professor!!! Very understandable and also gives extra credit to those who raise hands or go the assignments before due date. The book cost me like $5 on amazon! Super easy class. We write 3 essays and 1 reflection essay. Quizzes/ test could be taken again online. Super nice omg truly the best person ever (:
Bruce Anders does not want you to just pass his class, he wants you to succeed in your college life and future carrier. We only had to read one novel. Everything it's pretty clear (what to do or how to do it). If you don't know what he expects from your essay it's because you didn't pay attention! BEST ENGLISH PROFESSOR
Prof. Anders was a very tough grader. Every mistake could cost you greatly, no matter how small. He gives up on students very quickly.
Bruce Anders gave me a 31% in his class until I dropped the class. He gave no feedback on how to improve my work. Any small mistake would make my grade drop by a lot.
PLEASE READ ME: Anders is a GREAT teacher and he defiantly made me a better writer; however, don't take this class if you expecting an easy A because this class is a lot of work and VERY lecture and reading heavy. As long as you meet the due dates and do the work required he practically walks you through the class and does your work for you.
I found that Anders makes it actually easy to do well on every paper. My best advice, as someone who scored 90-100% on each paper, is to actually look at the material he provides. The "A Examples" and the detailed rubric are enough to pass, the rest lies on grammar. If you don't receive feedback, he explains why. Always check turnitin comments!
Did not care for students AT ALL! I had a legal obligation to be at jury duty & he did not even excuse my absence. He told me "that's not how my class runs." Pickiest teacher I have ever had! Great guy, but a terrible teacher.
I took his Eng. 103 class, be prepared to spend lots (LOTS) of time on essays, etc. He provides all the necessary resources for success in his class, including clear and concise feedback. However, I found this class to be much more difficult than need be. He is a very tough grader and has very high expectations for his students.
I have been a straight A student my entire life. and then I take this class. SUPER PICKY grader. doesn't understand that students have lives outside of the class. didnt end up passing the class. SUPER PICKY grader. this class sucked. worked so hard and didn't even pass..don't recommend. SUPER rude to students as well.
Literally the college professor that high school teachers talk about. Super picky, will knock off a lot of points for EACH punctuation error, grammar error, citing error. You may have to make many tutoring appointments for help. Ridiculous how detailed he wants everything.
Professor Anders was a real difficult professor. His class structure is very easy to understand but his grading criteria is very difficult. He is huge on grammar. However, he is very easy to get a hold of. Practice your essay writing skills with another professor.
Anders class is almost entirely online. He does all his lectures on a online video and it will be up to you to watch it, take notes, then attend class to hear him complain about the CSU/UC system. He literally spends over half the class time complaining or saying how great of a professor he is. He wants participation, but only on his terms.
He is the nightmare professor high school teachers warn you about. Simple mistakes will cost you your grade. Video lectures are thorough and he does want you to succeed; however, you'll have to jump through flaming hoops to do it. I still occasionally wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of "UCs and Cal States." I highly recommend.
I took this class last year and it was great! He is super helpful and responds fast. Everyone on here complains about how hard of a grader he is with punctuation but that's what the class is about. He gives examples of EXACTLY what to do and sets you up for success. Just make sure you double check your punctuation and you will pass.
Bruce Anders cares about his students and is passionate about English. Unfortunately, he is incredibly pedantic with his grading. He cares too much about what UCs and CSUs want. If you are neurodivergent, or even just stubborn, this is not the class for you as his assignments are structured nontraditionally & trying to write them will drive you mad
Anders is a harsh grader. He complains about the UCs more then he teaches. You either fail or pass his class. I would not recommend
Professor Anders has been one of my favorite professors thus far. He can be a tough grader, but it is because he cares about what he is teaching and wants to help. He has clear direction for his assignments and essays, and as long as you follow his rubrics you will do well. He provides thorough video feedback on each essay, which was very helpful.
extremely tough grader and will fail your assignments just because you didn't look at turnitin comments
Very, very tough and passive aggressive
Professor Anders is an extremely tough grader and I felt like even if I watched all of the lectures and followed the rubrics exactly that I would still fail all of my essays. He is also a very strict grader when it comes to grammar. I was very disappointed with his passive aggressive attitude as well. The only positive is that he responds to emails
Your final grade is made of four essays, but he allows for it to be reused. His grading is by no means difficult, but I found his desired writing approach to be very restrictive and formulaic. If you are looking for an easy course, the majority of other English professors available are far more generous. Overall, I feel my writing did not improve.
Professor Anders is a tough but caring grader. His clear rubrics and detailed feedback help you succeed, if you're willing to put in the work. unstuck study was a lifesaver for essay prep!
I took both English 101 and 103 with Professor Anders and his class is organized and clear. He is also very clear with how things are graded. I emailed him a few of times and he provided great feedback. 95% of this class is about correctly integrating quotes. As long as you double check your grammar and punctuation you should do great.
Terrible instructor. I took this class and do not recommend him.
I really wanted at enjoy this class but so far it has not been enjoyable. I don't recommend this class.
Based on my experience, I do not recommend this professor at all.
This class is very difficult. I would not recommend taking it with this professor.
You'd almost have to try to fail his classes. He uses a checklist rubric, so all you need to do is to make sure that your essays complete all the requirements BEFORE you submit your final drafts.
The is the first time that I've ever earned an "A" in any English class because he makes it so easy to write essays. In fact, when I applied his strategies to my other classes, I earned an "A" on those essays as well. Just pay attention to his videos and write the described paragraphs as soon as possible afterwards, and you'll do great!
I understand Anders wants students to be up to par with UC and CSU standards. However, his grading style, essay requirements and lectures made this class demoralizing. After taking his class, I have no desire to attend a UC or CSU. I honestly don't know if I want to continue college anymore.
I've never taken a class that is so easy to understand. Anders breaks down everything into bite-sized pieces, and as long as you keep up with the class's pace and don't procrastinate on writing the paragraphs of your assignments, you should earn an "A."
You'd have to be the world's worst procrastinator and the have the world's worst attention span to NOT pass his class. His recipe for success is simple: watch each week's advice video, watch that week's component videos, and then write the components. Rinse and repeat.
Watch each week's advice video, watch that week's component videos, and then write the components and turn them in on time yet he will still fail you. Skip this professor. There are much better alternatives out there.
The professor makes coursework so tricky. Example: He expects 5 full quotes & 5 partial quotes in one paragraph from verbal video lecture. It must be 250-300 max & a whole list of other requirements in one little paragraph. The worst part is if you miss 1 little thing, you'd expect a few points deducted, but no, he will deduct so many points. SKIP!
My gpa is 4.0 and I take pride in my work ethic. I am by no means a procrastinator and I show up to office hours to demonstrate my commitment. I honestly don't know why he grades so harshly. Small mistakes will cost you serious points dropping your grade drastically. It's an unfortunate no win situation and therefore do not recommend him.
I took English 101 & 103 with Professor Anders, and his classes were extremely challenging. I barely passed 101, but I assumed that since I had already taken a class with him, 103 would be easier. That wasn't the case. For some reason, he uses a strange grading method that prevents students from earning all the points they've worked for.
I also took Anders for both English 101 and English 103, earning a B in 101 and an A in 103. Since he does things EXACTLY the same in both classes, I don't know how anybody coming out of his 101 could manage to struggle in 103.
Took Anders for both English 101 and English 103, earning a C in 101 and a D in 103. Since he does things EXACTLY the same in both classes, You would think I would earn a better grade in 103 since I learned 101 from him. No, that was not the case at all. I turned everything in on time and as instructed yet he still gave me low points.
I wish I could recommend this instructor, but I can't. His teaching style relies heavily on YouTube videos, and the required novel is dull. After attending office hours and revising my essay based on his feedback, I was told it was great. However, I received a 60/100, which was disappointing after expecting a better grade based on his feedback.
I found that the structure, instruction, and overall experience did not meet my expectations. I would not recommend it to others seeking a productive and engaging learning environment.
I found this class more challenging than expected. Even with consistent effort and keeping up with assignments, achieving a high grade was difficult due to the strict grading criteria and point system.
The professor is knowledgeable, but his teaching style may not work for everyone. If you like self-teaching, this class might be a good fit. Otherwise, I would explore other options. Office hours were not as helpful as I had hoped, they focused more on the professor discussing his own expertise rather than providing guidance to improve our work.
Really wanted to enjoy this class but due to the grading and essay criteria it made this class extremely challenging. In the end, I was overwhelmed and felt like I didn't learn much. I don't recommend this class to others.
I'm not quite sure what I'll earn in his English 101 class, but I'm pretty sure that it will be an A or a B, so I just now registered for his English 103 next term. His assigned book this term is really interesting, and I've never seen any teacher make even half as many helpful comments on returned essays.
I'm uncertain about the grade I'll earn in his English 101 class, but based on my experience so far, I decided not to register for his English 103 next term. While the assigned book this term is somewhat engaging, I've found the feedback on essays to be overwhelming at times and not always as constructive or clear as I'd hoped.
I finished all my assignments ahead of time because it was suggested in order to earn a better grade and checked everything off from the rubric for each assignment. Somehow I never received a grade that reflected my effort. Therefore, I can't recommend this class.
This is the first class I've taken where a small punctuation error or minor mistake has resulted in a significant loss of points, drastically affecting my overall grade. I understand the importance of accuracy, and I believe a small deduction is reasonable, but the current grading approach seems to overlook the overall quality of the assignment.
The required novel for this class was boring and the way essays were structured to be written based off of the professor's opinion rather than the actual novel made it worse. I prefer to write about the book and its characters based on my opinion. Therefore this class wasn't a good fit for me and I wouldn't recommend it to others.
Despite the presence of a rubic, success in his class is not as straightforward as it may seem. Simply meeting the listed criteria does not always guarantee a strong grade, as expectations often go beyond what's written. While seeking clarification is important, it's difficult to rely on his feedback as it is often vague or inconsistent.
The detailed lectures and examples made this class seem like an easy "A." That changed after the first assignment—| got a low score for a single misquotation. Small mistakes are heavily penalized, and it's hard to recover. If you're looking for fair grading, I don't recommend this class.
Here's my best advice for his classes: listen to his weekly orientation and advice videos, and make sure that you put in extra quotes in case you make a mistake or two.
This class is definitely not easy, but it's definitely not hard. Pay attention to his videos and his comments on returned essays and you'll come away with a good grade.
This class is more challenging than it needs to be. The videos can be unclear at times, and the feedback on essays often lacks the detail needed to make meaningful improvements. Even with effort, earning a strong grade can be frustrating.
Relying on weekly orientation and advice videos isn't always helpful-they can be vague or repetitive. Adding extra quotes feels more like guessing what he wants than following clear guidelines. What's worse is when you reach out to him for help, he just tells you to watch the videos again. I don't recommend this class.
I had high expectations for this class due to its strong ratings, but after completing the term, I found it to be unnecessarily difficult and would not recommend it to others.
I found the class overly focused on quote formatting with minimal emphasis on deeper writing skills. Feedback lacked depth, and grading felt rigid rather than reflective of overall writing quality.
I might be only person in these ratings to have taken Anders in English 101 and English 103 AND finished my degree at Stan State. Since Anders teaches at a UC too, he is VERY familiar with four-year standards and expectations, and he did a great job of preparing me for all the writing I needed for all my classes.
After completing this course, I would not recommend it. The class focused heavily on writing essays. If essay writing is something you enjoy, this course might be a good fit. However, for those looking for more varied learning, I would suggest other options. Additionally, the grading criteria felt rigid, with no room for flexibility.
I found his teaching style was not helpful when I transferred to my UC. Quotes are his focus and his main priority. Sure they're important but are not a prime focus at my UC. I barely managed to pass his class because he is a tough grader. I turned in my assignments early each week and completed everything as instructed but somehow barely passed.
After taking this class, I wouldn't recommend it. It's focused almost entirely on essays and quotes. If that's your thing, it might suit you. However, the grading is strict—expect to include five full and five partial quotes per paragraph, which makes the writing feel forced and overly rigid.
I enrolled in this class hoping to learn and expand my knowledge. Unfortunately, the heavy focus on quoting left little opportunity to engage with broader concepts. While the material could have made for an easy A, the professor's extremely strict grading made the course difficult to pass. I would not recommend this class.
Get ready to read and write essays with the primary focus on quotes. Class was boring and didn't feel motivating. It didn't help me at all. Wasted a whole semester on this class. I don't recommend it. Find another alternative.
His first assignment is a paragraph and I was a little scared cause I didn't do great, but he lets us rewrite the paragraph and put it in the first essay. He made so many helpful comments on the paragraph that my first essay earned an "A." My next essay was twice as long and I got a "C," but he lets us rewrite it and put it in our last essay.
I did unexpectedly well in Anders's English 101 this term, so I'm definitely taking him again in the fall for English 103 because even though his work isn't easy, it's certainly not hard either
Dropped his class after getting a "D" on the first assignment (essay) even after attending office hours and making all his suggested changes. That was a red flag. Felt like unfair grading, so I switched to another class and earned an "A" instead.
if you want to fail english, take this class. i worked so hard for my grade in this class but if you want a normal english class, i advise you to stay away...
This class is graded on 1 assessment, 3 essays, and a final. Failing one can seriously hurt your grade. I had already read and enjoyed the novel beforehand. Even with full effort, office hours, and tutoring, passing isn't guaranteed. The strict UC/CSU writing style he enforces feels restrictive, nothing like what my UC or CSU relatives experienced.
I had the worse experience with this professor. He does not respond to emails or helps during office hours. I would not recommend taking this class.
Passionate about writing and literature, but brutal if your writing skills aren't strong. Only take it if you love analyzing texts, have a solid foundation, and enough time. This class isn't forgiving for anyone with weak writing skills or juggling full-time work or school, and he will not accommodate. You have been warned.
extremely tough grader that doesn't really like to give context as to what you did wrong. claims he put half an hour into reviewing and commenting on my work but several parts lost points, and had no context given as to why. responded to my email mentioning the time spent reviewing, then "This should be review. Didn't your instructor cover this?"
This professor is not a good one and I do not recommend him at all. He is a tough grader and will not assist students.
I took Professor Anders for both 101 and 103 because he said it was the same format. I am very glad I did. You are able to get as far ahead as you would like. He is a difficult grader, but after the first essay, it gets easier. You get to build off the first essay and only have to write from scratch twice. It was very manageable.
I wouldn't really recommend this class unless you love writing essays and analyzing quotes. Most of the coursework revolves around that, and the grading is super strict. If you enjoy that kind of structure, it might work for you, but otherwise it can be pretty frustrating.
I took his class and immediately knew he wasn't the right fit for me. His grading style is too strict and unforgiving. I ended up taking another course and received an A. I would not recommend this class.
It was not a good learning environment for me. The class consisted of youtube lectures and essay writing focusing on his opinion about a book. His main focus is quotes and punctuation which has to be perfect there's any small mistake it will severely affect your grade even if as a whole your essay if great.
After taking this class I don't recommend it because of his strict grading and lecture style.
I was hoping to enjoy this class but it was just too hard. It felt likeno matter what I did, it wasn't good enough and was graded harshly.
