One of the best teachers on campus. Whoever rated lowly must be smoking crack.
Top notch teacher, not boring at all, excellent communicator; class requires thinking and learning (not just memorization), very refreshing.
A good guy away from class, but not a good instructor. He spends too much time in the class trying to make it a bootcamp, singling out people for breaking his rules of wearing hats, etc. After all, we pay his salary, and we should be able to wear hats.
I'm a pretty big liberal but he's one of the coolest Republicans I know.
His teaching methods are solely based on power-point. His lectures can be tuff at times due to the size of the class, he didn't really go in depth in any of the material, but rather left it up to you to learn. If you put the time in you will at least make a B.
He was a great teacher! He made class interesting for the most part. Go to class everyday because he has random quizzes. The quizzes aren't hard if you have reviewed your notes from the class before. The tests aren't too hard, but they are timed so you have to know what you are doing.
He is an unhelpful person who talks about his politics too much
Sir, take your hat off sir.
Seems nice outside of class. Very anal and strict. Very difficult tests!
Most conservative professor on campus.
nice guy, but does not fully explain the material... he doesn't curve grades either, and the tests are extremely hard... good luck to anyone who takes this class
Dr. Barret was very willing to help students, but they also must put in their part of the work. Tests and quizes are M.C./ True False, but don't let this fool you, you must know how to work the problems.
Dr. Barrett, I enjoyed his class a lot, but he does go over the material pretty fast so do the readings before class. His test are T/F Mult Choice but are very difficult. He does give you a practice test which covers about 70% of the real test. I think he is by far one of the best Professors I had.
He is a great professor! I'm not even majoring in business, yet he made the material interesting to me. He helps you understand the material by giving you everyday examples that you can identify with. His practice tests really help prepare you for the actual tests, which aren't that hard as long as you keep up with the material. Take him!
Greatest ever
Can't believe this professor is rated well. A lot of quizzes, so if you go to class, you'll do well. Boring and horrible lectures, so coming to class is barely worth a good grade. On test days, you have to stay in the classroom until the end of class time, doesn't matter if you finish your test or not. Definitely horrible.
Dr. Barrett is a cool cat. He is very down earth and loves what he does. The class is straight to the point and so are the test.
great professor! definitely on the geeky side but knows what he's talking about, and tells some interesting stories. gives quizzes at least once a week, mainly for attendance so go to class! also, take advantage of the TA sessions- they are REALLY helpful and can explain or clarify anything dr.barrett says.
A Very Nice Man...His test can be hard but, study hard and you'll do okay! Learned a lot from his class! Go to Class though!
A Very Nice Man...His test can be hard but, study hard and you'll do okay! Learned a lot from his class! Go to Class though!
I really liked Dr. Barrett! He made the class and the material manageable. He also gives alot of great life lessons throughout the semester!
Passed all 3 tests, but still got a D-. GO TO CLASS take the quizzes or you will be screwed. Funny guy though, will probably take him again.
Most moral and ethical person I have ever met...I think he should be our next President! He makes stats relevant to all his students and gets to know everyone in the class. He is the best teacher I have had so far by a landslide!
this guy is a right wing conservative that trys to rub his views off on everyone. The class is not that bad if you go.
I hated this guy, every example this guy gave was from the Baptist Morning Gazette. After the second month I couldn't tell if I was in AB10 or Church Service for one of those RattleSnake Cults in Limestone. Seriously, this guy was a complete nutball, I went into his office hours and he was more interested about changing my political views. Useless.
He is a great guy w a genuine interest in Stats. I didn't do that well in there but I would hate to see what I would have made without him
Dr. Barrett's class is EASY EASY! Just come to class, take the quizes and listen to his lectures you should be fine! He gives a practice test, if you review that and know the material on there you will do fine on the tests. YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS because quizes are important factor w/ ur grade. His lectures can be boring and he is VERY conservative!
Dr. Barrett is a wonderful teacher, he makes everything very easy to understand. He gives quizzes almost everyday and sometimes you get all points on a quiz just for attending class. He is optionated but in a passionate way. Barrett is very intellectual and very good to listen to. Would recomend greatly
Dr. Barrett is a good teacher. He's very sarcastic at times and does have his own politcal views, but if you come to class and work the suggested problems you will definitely pass. He gives a sample test before every exam showing exactly what is on the test. He curves grades and he also gives quizzes that helps your grade. Mostly for attendance!
He is a good teacher. Go to class and you will pass. Offers a lot of help as well. I would recommend him. Just go to class!
Dr Barrett is a wonderful professor. ST 260 is a BORING class, but Barrett makes it entertaining. Just go to class and review your notes. He gives pop quizzes mainly for attendance. He never takes anything out of the book, so don't even bother buying it. THe software you need for the one hw he gives is in Bashinsky.
Dr. Barrett is a fantastic teacher! He is very conservative and really interesting to listen to.He tries to make statistics interesting to his students by relating it to real life situations. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK.He puts his notes online.Tests were reasonable and quizzes are there to increase ur grade so GO TO CLASS!
I love Dr. Barrett! He is probably my favorite teacher i have had out of almost 3 years here. You have to go to class, and slightly prepare for the quizzes. They are taken for attendence, and count as a whole test grade in the end!SO GO TO CLASS! He makes stats and the class very fun and entertaining! And he gives a GREAT studyguide for the tests!
Great professor. If you have to take stat this is your best option.
Dr. Barrett is wonderful. He is my favorite professor that I have ever had here. He is just an all-around kind, helpful guy and he's a great teacher. I was scared that Stats was going to be hard, but he made it easy by giving practice tests exactly like the tests and quizzes for attendence to boost your grade. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM!
This class is hard. There are quizzes everyday, but sometimes they are only attendance quizzes, so go to class. He is a very fair teacher though, and he is really nice. He knows what he is talking about.
I was terrified coming into Statistics, but I absolutely loved Dr. Barrett's class! He is interesting, loves teaching, and you take a lot more away from taking his class than just calculating statistics. I think he's a great teacher - he goes through material fast, and he has lots of short quizzes, so go to class!
Take Dr. Barrett for ST 260! Great professor! Just go to class and you will pass. Does take a lot work to make an A, but a B or C is very doable if you just come to class and review the study guides and examples he presents. Very entertaining. I would recommend him to anyone!
Definitely the best ST 260 teacher on campus. It's a hard subject to teach and learn but he does a good job. Don't buy the textbook- there is no need.
Phenomenal teacher. By the end of the year, I looked forward to his class because he made me laugh so hard. Best 260 teacher there is. Make sure you go to class and take the daily quiz, that saved my grade a lot. Overall great teacher and truly has a passion for what he teaches, which is rare these days...
Dr. Roberts class is not impossible! You must go to class because there is a quiz almost everyday, but it makes you study and at the end of the year it equals to a test grade. Go to the tutoring sessions; especially before the final. The first test is almost exactly like the study guide he gives out so review it a lot.
Difficult course material but he is a GREAT teacher. He genuinely cares about every student and loves his job. Go to class. Use the study guides and go to the review sessions. Don't buy the book.
Probably best stats teacher, atleast better than Goertz because I dropped his class. Still can be confusing, rambles alot about irrelevant topics, but your best bet for this course.
The best stats teacher at Alabama. But the class is hard. GO TO CLASS AND DO GOOD ON YOUR QUIZZES. They will pull your grade up a letter grade.
Dr. Barrett is the best stats teacher at Alabama. He gives a lot of quizes, but they really help your grade and a lot of them are just attendance quizes. The tests aren't that bad and he reviews for them a week in advance. Very good teacher and an all around good guy.
Dr. Barrett is a the best teacher for the ST 260 class. The class is very hard, but he simplifies the material. He is a very tough guy to talk to and meet because he is very short to people who dont respect him
I will warn you right now that if you are political, and in any way left leaning you may not end up liking him. He talked about politics entirely too much. I had him during the 2008 election though, that may have had something to do with it. GO TO CLASS EVERY SINGLE DAY
He wants people to be polite and does not like it if you leave his class early. Also wants students to remove their hats in class which is fine. Pretty funny teacher, has (typically) easy quizzes almost every class. Tests are not hard, but the true/false always messes up my test grade. As long as you do well on quizzes you should do fine.
extremely conservation (not a bad thing) but often times forgets he is teaching stats not politics... tests are very tricky, I think he has a misconstrued idea of what's hard to normal people because he is so smart himself. Would not want to take him again thats for sure. His TA is better at explanation than he is
He is a very good professor even though he often gets off topic. Tests are not hard but the true/false might mess you up. The quizzes will really bring your grade up so I recommend going to class.
Cant teach at all. everything you will either teach to yourself or go to the tutoring sessions, which wouldnt be horrible if you weren't FORCED to sit through EVERY class (because of his attendance quizzes) for the entire class time. its like being in junior high detention or something
Really nice man and really funny. I enjoyed going to class but it was hard to pick up the concepts. Lots of self teaching.
Dr. Barrett is a good teacher. He trys to keep things interesting but sometimes rambles on about nonsense. Daily quizzes that are fairly easy but the tests are tricky. I had to teach myself most of the stuff because I got so lost in class. Hes a great guy, not a great teacher. but then again the material isn't fun to learn either...
Dr. Barrett is a very intelligent man. He knows what he is talking about. Sometimes the class is hard to follw, but thats because its STATS, not everyone's cup of tea. Don't buy the book, go to class for the daily quizzes (25% of your grade) and you will do fine. He puts out practice tests VERY similar to the real tests. Easy A if you go to class.
Dr. Barrett was great, very smart guy. 3 tests 75%. Quizzes every day 25% of grade. Class was not easy but it wasn't impossible - very interesting. I enjoyed his pre-lecture lecture, he knows a lot of stuff unrelated to stats. Dr. Barrett is conservative which is a good thing. Bumps grade up a smidgen. A+ is possible. A would be easily achieved.
Excellent, clear professor. And, I'm sorry, but despite what other ratings might lead you to believe, if you aren't understanding the main concepts of his lectures, it's either because you're not paying an ounce of attention or you're simply stats stupid. His off-topic conservative and religious rants did rub me the wrong way sometimes, though.
Professor seems mean in the beginning but later really grows on you. Lots of attendance quizzes and he gives free points. He's very intelligent and hard to follow. If you read his lecture notes well and do practice test you should be fine He is very entertaining with his rants about todays youth!
Dr. Barrett is a great teacher. Uses the first 2-3 classes to set the standard for his class. He's big on respect. Teaches well & doesnt move on unless he thinks his point is clear. Helpful for sure. Recommend to anyone. ONLY downside of the class the book was never used so if I did it all over I wouldnt purchase the book. Dr. Barrett is a YES!!!!
He's a great Stats teacher and wants his students to learn the subject and apply it to daily life. He's big on respect like no hats or phones in class. Never cracked open my book, and BEST advice, Go to the review session if Bret Vitrano is still there!
Bad Teacher, but means well. He can lecture pretty well, but he will stick you on attendance. There is no getting by on tests alone.
Bitter-sweet class.. great teacher, miserable subject material. really enjoyed that he broke the lectures up with an off-topic rant in his attempt to pull everyone back in that had dozed off. Very intellegent guy with some very useful insight. ATTENDANCE IS A MUST. Don't recommend it at 8am though.
For a class not many are excited about Barret made stats really interesting. He is the best option for taking ST 260. Test are challenging but doable. Go to class. One of the better teachers at UA.
Statistics is such a boring topic to teach, but he does it well. Quiz every day so you can't ever miss, but he does his best to make it easy. Its confusing when he teaches but when he gives you the study guide for the test it all comes together, so the tests are super easy. Highly recommend.
He can be fun most the time & tell jokes. He does give hand written examples as well as sample tests. He will call you out if you are on your phone & he does not allow you to wear hats. Overall, not too bad... just hard class because it's statistics!
I think he is an amazing professor; however, I would recommend having some prior knowledge to stats before taking his class. Those that were new to stats seemed to have trouble keeping up with his lectures (they're very fast paced). But don't let that scare you. He really makes an effort to be fair.
He gives out daily quizzes and they count for a test grade so go to class. Really nice guy. Definitely the stats professor to take at UA. Final isn't cumulative and all the tests are just like the practice ones he gives you
Dr. Barrett is definitely the professor to take for stats. He is a genuinely nice person, and will give you fair treatment if you actually give effort. Doesn't take BS excuses, so don't even try. Daily quizzes, notes on elearning, non-cumulative final, and he gives practice exams. Explains the material thoroughly, and answers any questions.
Great professor. Gives quizzes every class so you gotta show up, but the quizzes are usually easy points and help pad your grade. Face it, statistics is boring, but Dr Berrett is probably the best teacher you could have for it. Definitely recommend him.
Dr. Barret is a really a great guy and he kept the class interesting. There are usually short quizzes but many of them are just attendance. He gives sample tests that are almost identical to the real tests. I would definitely take him!
Fantastic guy. Truly cares about his students and wants to see them do well. Definitely keep up with the problems he suggests for you do in the book-they really help on tests. Print off the PowerPoints and take notes. Go to the TA's help sessions. Re-read notes/text to help with daily quizzes. His practice tests and exam reviews are very helpful.
He is a nice guy and means well. But there are so many other options for teachers (most of which are far easier). Don't take a chance, especially if you need this to get into upper division business. I was stressing the last quarter, so afraid of not getting above a D. Avoid if possible (if not go to every class for quizes, these will help your GPA
This class is not easy, but Dr. Barrett is awesome and makes the course as doable as possible in my opinion. He is very interesting and will be sure to keep you entertained in class. I would most definitely recommend him for Stats 260 at UA.
This is a boring subject, no way around that, but Dr. Barrett did as much as he could to make the class interesting. I found the test fairly difficult and sometimes tricky. He likes to talk about himself and how smart he is a lot. It's passable, but you have to go to class for the quizzes.
Very good Professor!
TOO GOOD!
He is the best you can hope for as well as clarity and helping you understand a hard subject.
Dr. Barrett's class is difficult & you have to work at but it is so worth it. You HAVE to go to class if you want to do well. He gives daily quizzes, which help you keep up with the material. He knows what he is talking about & does a fair job at explaining so it's up to you to pay attention. No technology so no distractions, & don't wear a hat
You can't use any technology in this class, but he teaches well. Dr. Barrett does his best to make the class interesting. There are short quizzes most every day that will help boost your grade, so attendance is really important. If your go to class and pay attention, you should do pretty well, and he wants you to succeed. Would take him again!
Tries to change your life. Raging republican that thinks he is the best professor at the university. Worst professor I have ever had.
He's an ok teacher, but he sometimes gets off topic. For some reason he feels the need to talk about his political views. He's subtle about it. Which bothers me even more. He also has a unhealthy relationship with baseball caps. I don't know if he had a life altering experience with hats but he doesn't like them. I just want to learn stats.
Takes a very "preacher-esque approach to teaching stats. Very good teacher who loves his job, and stats in general. If you struggle with math or stats take him he will fix that. WILL get off topic about once per class, but the rants are usually entertaining! If you are a a bit of a liberal, he will rub you the wrong way, but welcome to Alabama.
Dr. Barrett clearly knows what he is talking about, and can be incredibly helpful if you reach out to him. But he has no sympathy for students who don't come to class and don't ask for help. Take notes and study as you go along, and it isn't too difficult. Textbook reviews aren't mandatory, but so helpful.
if you are not interested in ST then do not ever take his class. If you like ST he is the best for you. Trust me!
absolutely horrible teacher. talks about how he is a republican almost every class. doesn't let anyone finish asking a question without an interruption from him. doesn't allow any technology or hats. if he catches you he calls you out In front of the whole class to embarrass you. gives a quiz every class. tests are hard. speeds through slides.
Go to class and you will pass. He gives a quiz every class, sometime just attendance. The test are straight from the study guide he gives you. I would take him again him.
It's clear that he wants you to actually understand stats in a way that will actually be useful in your life. Seems genuinely interested in talking to students about whatever. Lectures hold my attention for 1hr 15 and I've never needed to study or do problems outside of class except for the study guide for the tests. Tests are mostly conceptual!
He gives an attendance quiz over the material from the previous day for every class period. It was difficult to write down notes because he goes way to fast with the material. He will talk the entire class period, and really values his own opinion. Don't try to pull out any electronics because he will call you out.
Dr. Barrett knows how to teach this class well. He makes this difficult subject easier and is very clear on what you need to know. He is very knowledgeable and loves to flaunt his knowledge arrogantly. He is very opinionated as well. Easy daily quizzes (he drops the lowest four) will help tremendously if you do not do well on the tests.
This class is do-able if you go to class everyday, take notes on what he's saying (not what's on the powerpoints), and if you understand respect. Lots of kids got thrown out for hats, leaving after quizzes, and cell phones. This guy doesn't mess around, but if you do what he asks, you should get an A. Had to study about 2 hours a week; no homework
Barrett is the BEST professor I've ever had. Statistics is a hard class, the material is difficult but he goes above and beyond in explaining the material and makes sure you have every opportunity to understand the topics. Gives quizzes to boost averages and provides sample tests and examples. He's hilarious and loves his job. highly recommend!
Dr. Barrett is very inspiring and such an amazing man, he is always willing to help. He teaches like he teaches upper level stats... The stats class itself is NOT easy. It is boring and hard to understand, even if you are a business major. His daily quizzes can sometimes be a little difficult. If you come to class and pay attention it is doable.
Dr. Barrett teaches this class as if it was 50% statistics and 50% philosophy. It is hard to make a subject like statistics engaging, but he does a fair job. With the difficulty of his class as it compares to other statistic classes I would recommend another teacher if your looking to get out with a great grade.
This class is impossible. The quizzes are not easy and do not boost your grade and the test averages are terrible. The class environment is very strict with TA's swarming you and making sure you dont have a cell phone or leave class early. Would highly recommend taking another teacher
Dr. Barrett is old school, so you don't have quizzes and such online. He will answer your questions when you ask. The class sizes are large but he posts notes on blackboard so you can have them for class. He often starts off with a couple of fun articles or graphs and then a quiz. Pay attention and study, and you should be fine.
Dr. Barrett is by far my favorite professor that I have taken at this school. ST260 is a hard class but if you show him that you are putting in effort (visiting office hours, staying after class to ask questions) he will be more willing to help. Also- if you need to take ST260 over the summer, take Dr. B! He was the best!
One of the most old-school professors I've ever had. No technology in class (even though it's a lecture hall of 250 people) and no hats. You can tell he care about the students but you're only graded on in-class quizzes and tests. Some of his random rants are interesting but his actual stat lectures put me to sleep.
One of my favorite professors so far. He is very old fashioned (no phones or hats) and makes you work for an A. St 260 is definitely a weed-out class for the business school but Barrett does a great job of making it interesting with fun graphs and stories. If you show up, work hard, and go for help if needed you will be fine. Really shows he cares.
He is definitely old fashioned; no hats or electronics. I liked Dr. Barrett as a person, but half of the time I didn't know what was going on. You have to pay attention in class, because you have a quiz at the beginning of every class. I did pretty well on the first two tests, but the last one was really hard for me.
Great professor for a difficult class. Quiz every class but they aren't difficult and end up helping your grade by the end of the semester, sometimes will even give you free 100s on them. Take plenty of notes when he's doing the test review, it's very similar to the test he'll give.
Dr. Barrett is a fantastic professor. The material is difficult for those who have little experience with statistics beforehand but he makes the course entertaining and knows theres more to life than stats. He is not ashamed of his beliefs but I believe he does a great job of seeing both sides and is quick to admit when he sees he is wrong.
One of the nicest men I've ever known. He is a good Christian man, and wants to use his faith to help others. I have never had a professor care more about students than he does. His class may be hard, but he is funny and makes class enjoyable. His tests are curved and so is his final grade.
You either like him or you don't. Gave us quizzes practically every class. He is so smart that he teaches at a level higher than what is expected. Our notes literally had 500 level labeled on them. Hardest class by far, but if you put in a lot of effort you should be fine.
He is good, but not great. Stats is a hard class and he makes it a little easier but his tests are pretty hard and gives daily quizzes so attendance is mandatory.
Pop quizzes every day, but he spends lots of time making class funny and fun. He is a good man that cares about his students. He curves the final and final grade. He is a really good person and shares his faith, which I respect.
Funiest proessor on campus. Makes class fun and enjoyable. He was the best professor in entire MBA curriculum. Curved tests and final grade. Makes an 89 and A and a 75 a B. Cant beat that!
Really makes class interesting and works hard to teach material. Quizzes every day but lets you drop 4. Scaled pretty well, but only had three tests that determined grade. Very strict but you'll understand statistics by the end.
Dr. Barrett is old fashioned but he is so genuine and passionate not only about stats but his students. If you go to his lectures and do practice tests, you will do just fine. Him & TAs are available to help almost every week. Down to earth dude that tries to keep class funny and interesting. Quizzes every class, but a good portion were freebies
If you go to class and pay attention you'll do fine in the class. There is a written quiz for every class, but in the end it'll help you. If you study his previous tests that he gives you in class you should do fine on the exams. He is very old school and rubs some people the wrong way but he's funny and will tell you lots of personal stories.
BB is an amazing professor! ST 260 is a difficult class, to begin with, but Dr. Barrett does try his hardest to make sure you learn everything you need! You HAVE to go to class or you will fail. He is a great professor and a great person in general. 12/10 recommend.
He really made a handful of offensive comments throughout the semester, but no one said anything but he alluded to conflict in the past. He was very clear in the lectures and notes. He was a very good teacher, but he was very forthright about his personal beliefs in most classes about religion and politics even though it was statistics.
Fair professor with a fair grading system. Doesn't let you skate through the class but doesn't make it unnecessarily difficult. A good lecturer that is not afraid to talk about topics he's invested in. If you show up to class, pay attention and review test material you should be fine.
Be super careful... I think of myself as a pretty smart person but struggled heavily in this class. A lot of people in my class had taken it in high school, so it was a breeze for them. You have to listen in class and put in time to study or you will be totally lost. He's very lenient on some things and will curve test grades and also curved final.
Stats is a very difficult class, which is universally known, but Mr. Barrett does what he can to break it down and help you understand it. *He will usually add extra points to you final course grade if your attendance is good which saved me!!!!!!!!!!!! However, be prepared to watch Youtube videos and get help from outside sources.
Dr. Barrett is so knowledgeable about the topics, and he presents them in a way thats applicable to the real world. He gave practice exams that were exactly like the actual ones. He really cares about his students! He made an effort to talk to everyone before class started during the whole semester.
Dr. Barrett is a neat guy. He is very old school. Sometimes he gets off topic and discusses things other than statistics, but he makes an effort to get to know each of his students. Grade is determined by average of 3 tests but if you miss less than 7 classes, he adds 4 points to your final average. Talk to him each class and youll be fine.
I loved Dr. Barrett!! He made his class interesting where you would enjoy to listen to his lectures. He makes a personal effort to meet and talk with each of his students. His tests are very similar to the practice tests he gives out. If you pay attention and come to class you will be okay!
I struggle with Stats. I have taken Gray, (he may no longer be teaching stats, haven't looked tbh) and Casselman before taking Professor Barrett. Each of those professors are fine, but they don't have what Professor Barrett has, a genuine care for each and every student. Quizzes every class. The study guides he gives are the exact thing. THE BEST!
Class is hard but Bruce is so nice and very funny. He keeps class interesting and engaging. You can tell he is a very good person
At first I thought he had bad vibes, but he ended up one of my favorite profs this semester. He is old fashioned- no laptops or hats allowed,, but is very knowledgeable, good at teaching the material, and makes tests pretty easy. Always gives study guides before exams that look just like the real exams. He is funny and engaging in class.
Dr. Barrett has been one of my favorite professors at Alabama so far. He is old-school but super funny and engaging with his students. We normally have a daily quiz (sometimes its an attendance sheet) which affect your grade but he drops the lowest scores. He posts a practice exam before the test which is almost the same as the real one.
He is a great professor, but does not tell students about additional tutoring services that are offered weekly for free. His lectures are somewhat helpful, but he is not good at explaining things; it is very obvious he teaches higher level ST courses. His class is very difficult, but I like him as professor.
Dr. Barrett is strict when it comes to being on your phone or laptop and strict about wearing hats or hoods in class. However, some of the things he says are downright hilarious, and I don't mind waking up to hear him talk at 8 am. Stats is a hard class, but he makes it as enjoyable as could be.
His class is definitely tougher, but I think his personality is something you can't find in most professors. There's quizzes every class, but he will sometimes make them fun or give a free grade for showing up. It is very test heavy and he has a specific teaching style, but his commentary and presence were worth the hard work!
Dr. Barrett is my favorite prof so far. He obviously cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Changed the grading scale to help those who did badly on tests. Daily quizzes, but they're meant to help your grades. Stats is hard, but taking it with Dr. Barrett is probably the most enjoyable way.
Dr. Barrett really cares about his students. He has a few rules and is strict on them, but if you can not follow simple rules like no hats, no laptops, and no phones, then you really should not be in college to begin with. If you follow his rules and go to class he is awesome. He teaches concepts in multiple ways and is very accessable.
The only thing in this class that you do (and that gets put into the gradebook) are tests and quizzes. No homework, which is nice but this means you have to be an amazing test taker. Every single day class there is either a quiz or an attendance sign in sheet that counts as a quiz grade. 3 tests including finals. Learned more from tutor than him.
Dr. Barrett is a great professor. He is thorough in his lectures and is willing to stay after class to help students. Stats is a hard class, but he does his best to make it easier by staying after class and lowering the grading scale just a little bit for all students. Only grades the entire year are daily quizzes and tests. No homework.
Just had an intensive knee surgery. I live over a mile away from class. All of my professors were very understanding except for him. His response to my email was passive aggressive. He would not respond to me directly, and instead sent an email to the whole class how he doesn't care and dont email him about missing class. Real nice guy.
Bruce barret Is the worst teacher I have had in my life. If you haven't taken stats before your screwed. he does not teach, just reads off PowerPoints. no-one around me ever understands wants going on. he's extremely rude and called me out for going to bathroom?? attendance is required and every class is a complete waste of time. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
ST260 is a hard class, but he does the best he can. You have daily quizzes/attendance so you have to go to class. He just reads off a powerpoint, but he ultimately curves grades some. Tests are very hard but TAs saved me. Required a lot of practice outside of class, but there is no homework. I would take him again solely because of the curved grade
I started out loving him at the beginning of the semester, but as time went on, he got more and more snippy about every minor detail. I would go up before class and ask him questions, and his response was always, "I have 500 students I just can't do this right now." If you can't handle that many students, maybe you shouldn't be teaching that many.
Has daily quizzes on the previous classes material or sometimes just an attendance sheet instead. Also, if you miss a class, the content just builds on itself; therefore attendance is a necessity. Has practice tests online and if you can figure those out, the tests are pretty straightforward. He gets upset if people where hats or use technology.
Hes a nice guy, just a very hard class and he doesn't do well explaining it. He just reads off the powerpoint and doesn't ever tell you formulas or how to do the math, he just shows pictures of it. Attendance is mandatory because there's a quiz every class. You can get through the class for sure just not a fun class by any means.
All the criticisms of Barrett as a person are 100% valid, but when it comes to actually teaching statistics, I think he does a good job. I learned from all his lectures, and he really does give you all the resources you need to do well in the class, including practice exams. If you can get past the weird policies, he's a good choice for ST 260.
BB is great guy with great personality. Grade calculated by 3 exams & daily quizzes (so yes, you have to go to class, 4 total will be dropped). By the end of the semester, he curves if you've attended a certain amt of classes. Tests are so difficult and the class avg is about a 60-70 every exam. the final isn't cumulative though. good luck!
An old-school professor. No hats or laptops in class. Quizzes most classes to pad ur grade for tests. No hw. Stands and lectures the whole time. Sometimes rambles on about stuff you don't need to know. Very knowledgeable. Very funny. Could adapt his teaching style to fit the modern era. Show up, pay attention, and study to be successful.
I really enjoyed being in his class. He's a funny guy, and knows everything you'd ever need to know about statistics. Also did a lot throughout the semester to help our grades. It's a tough class, but if you pay attention and put in the work, Dr. Barrett will do everything he can to help you.
Super old school. Don't take unless you're a good audio learner-- no electronics; sometimes he wouldn't even let us take notes and just wanted us to "listen". Seems nice, but his teaching style just didn't work for me. Hoping for a curve @ the end, but tests are VERY difficult (class avg was 60s and 70s) and only grades were 3 tests + daily quizzes
Dr. Barrett is a very nice guy, however, his class is hard for a 200 level course. He doesn't allow any kind of electronics to take notes on. He does daily quizzes & he only gives 3 tests & no homework. His test are very difficult with half being MC & the other T/F. I don't recommend him if you want to make a good grade.
Great teacher and always had great examples. He takes attendence every class for extra credit which is annoying but also helps in the end. Tests are hard but you really have to study to do well-- would probs be like this with any teacher. He makes the class enjoyable
Amazing professor! He's old school but that never really interfered w class. He was caring and wanted to know his students, just talk to him about anything. The test were difficult and hard to gauge how well you did. Study PowerPoints and practice test and you'll do fine. He knows it's a hard class but is willing to help if you ask.
Dr. Barrett does a fantastic job teaching a difficult subject. Statistics are difficult to grasp and you won't do so by simply attending class. He doesn't assign any homework, but there are quizzes every now and then to help you practice what you're learning. He is very flexible with students and very funny during his lectures.
Teaches like it's the 70's. NO computers or phones. Very proud of the fact that half the class doesn't pass
im in the 50 minute class. Understandably, it would be hard to teach enough material in the time frame but the guy doesnt teach. just reads off the powerpoint for like 25 minutes then spends the rest of the time on bs tangents. no hats so make sure you have a good hair day!
While I did make an A+, this class was way harder than it needed to be. The practice tests do help prepare you for the test, but the T/F sections are full of trick questions that you need to thoroughly read through. It's just honestly ridiculous. You need to have a good understanding for the T/F (which is where most students miss their points)
Dr. Barrett is an AMAZING person, but a bad professor. He doesn't really teach, he just talks. He wants you to succeed, but has straight up told me and others "it's not my job to teach you statistics." His tests are extremely difficult, quizzes are difficult, and you MUST go to class EVERY TIME to pass. Just avoid the stress and take someone else.
Stats is a hard class, no matter who you take it with. He only grades on attendance (IMPORTANT), quizzes (15-20) and 3 exams. The practice exams help with the math based questions, but study notes and slides for the T/F. I recommend sneaking a pic or writing down the quiz questions. they help when preparing for exams. No hats or tech in class.
Attend class and study for quizzes. If you attend class frequently, you can raise your grade by a whole letter. However, the tests are quite difficult and he often goes off on tangents in class.
Professor Barrett is different from any other teachers I had. His class is challenging, but you won't regret taking it. Authenticity and passion for education are what define this man.
Dr. Barrett is extremely knowledgeable and a great professor. He does teach like it is the 70's in that he expects you to really learn the content rather than just regurgitate information. This is an extremely hard course but I learned a lot. Come to every class and he will give bonus points. Also if you don't come you won't pass.
Dr. Barrett, like many of the reviews here have stated, is a very traditional college professor. As such, you absolutely must study in order to succeed in his class. There was a study group help for this class by some students this semester, and that was definitely helpful. Absolutely do the practice tests and problems!
He does not let you use a LICK of technology in class but tells you the excel formulas??? In class quizzes every. single. class. and better get a printer before you take this class because he asks you to print out 1000000 quiz sheets and 60 slide power points. Was knowledgeable in stats but rushed through example problems.
Dr. Barrett is extremely knowledgeable and will teach you everything you need to know about stats if you are willing to do the work. He will go on tangents, but if you take detailed notes and come to class then you get everything you need. Could not recommend him more. Take plenty of notes, study, and come to class and you will be fine.
Amazing professor but very old school. NO TECHNOLOGY AT ALL!!!! Quizzes every single class on what you learned the previous class - you have to print out the quiz papers as well. Class is hard as it is but he is a good professor - very knowledgeable. I would take him again
No computers. Very smart and understands this class more than the average statistics beginner so he talks over your head and you half to connect the dots yourself, but he is very nice and rounds grades based off what he thinks that student actually deserves. Quizzes every class but they are not hard and most are attendance to boost your grade.
Make sure to meet with Anna his TA. She helped me tremendously in this class. If it wasn't for her, I would have failed. Bruce is awesome but teaches like this class is an upper level class. Pop quizzes weekly so make sure to attend class.
Dr. Barrett is very old-school, but he is hilarious and you never know what he is going to say in lectures. You can tell he loves teaching this class and he is very passionate about stats, and he wants you to be interested. The course is only graded on 3 tests and attendance, so make sure you show up to class
Professor Barret is extremely intelligent and funny, but he sometimes did unnecessarily complicate things for the course level and tests. You will need to study, do the practice tests, and attend class to do well. Amazing person, would take him again!
Very good professor however he doesn't allow any technology whatsoever. I often would doze off in class cause he would go off on random tangents. BUT, attendance is 25% of your grade which really helps you in the end. You could get 60's on your tests and still pass. He is very intelligent and knows what he's doing. He also curves the tests.
Unless you are good at stats or are better at teaching yourself do not take this class all the other stats teachers are pretty good. And a huge factor there is no homework so yes if u show up you get 25 out of 100 p
I have no idea how this guy is rated so high . Do not take this class under any circumstances unless u are a math student or a great guesser . There is attendance points so that helps however there is no homework which sounds
I do not know how in the world this guy has a 4/5 this is by far the worst and hardest class I have taken at UA . This was harder than any upper level management class I have taken and far harder than my grad classes are now . Under no circumstance should you take this class , unless you are a good guesser those are the kids that pass this class.
The most frustrating professor I have taken so far. To start, no technology of any kind is allowed and everything is pen and paper, including the sheet for mandatory attendance that distractingly gets passed around. Lives in the past and constantly goes on "back in my day" rants. No hats allowed in class and will call you out for wearing one.
3 tests + attendance, each 25% of your grade. Outside of him being petrified of technology, for some strange reason he makes a point that nobody should wear hats to be "ready" for class. Bruce Barrett CONSISTENTLY goes on random tangents about stuff that quite literally serves no purpose to the course content whatsoever. Learned more from the TA.
Under no circumstance should you ever take this class with bruce barrett
I beg you to choose a different professor its not letting me select D - but he prides himself on only 40 percent of the class passing
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASSS.
Despite what all the other reviews say, you can pass Dr. Barrett's class if you give more than the bare minimum. You definitely need to study a little, but 25% of your grade is based on attendance.
Professor Barrett is an extremely intelligent and good-hearted person. He is old-school, but he ultimately just wants your respect - and he let half of the people use laptops anyway. 3 tests and attendance is all the class is graded by. Concepts are hard but understanding notation is the main difficulty of the class.
they wont let me say what i want to say but pls dont do it. he is such a headache.
Professor Barrett is truly one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is the dictionary definition of an old tenured professor who knows he cannot get fired so he does not care anymore. Your grade is determined by 3 tests and attendance, each of which being 25% of your grade. He does not teach statistics. I got truly nothing out of this class.
While Professor Barrett can be old-school, his focus on fundamentals is valuable. Attendance is mandatory but 25% of your grade. Concepts are challenging, but using unstuck study alongside the textbook helped me grasp the material.
If you're gonna take ST-260, take Bruce Barrett. He has such a crazy high understanding of the content, but he can explain it well. He essentially gives you the exam before you take it as a practice exam, and gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Just pay attention and work hard, and you'll do fine. It's a hard subject, he makes it easier.
Worst class I have ever been a part of at The University of Alabama. He needs to retire. Didn't reply to emails and was happy that the class average was a D. His lectures made zero sense so it is basically a self taught course. Hands down the worst professor I have ever had.
He is difficult teacher that is just frankly too smart to be teaching the class, he teaches it like a PhD class and is VERY OLD SCHOOL. I absolutely recommend going to the TA because honesty they are the one reason I'm not failing. Exams also look nothing like the study guide, so you need to understand the concepts inside and out.
Genuinely one of the worst professors I've ever had, he is rude and makes unnecessary comments about political topics which don't belong in a statistics class. He will stop your 300-person lecture hall if someone is wearing a hat or goes on their phone which is disrespectful of everyone else's time. Please avoid taking his class.
This class is near impossible to get higher than a B or B- in. Your grade is only made up of 3 tests and attendance, so each test is worth 25% of your grade. I would take anyone else other than him.
Actually the worst professor I have ever had. Extremely rude and would not curve test grades even when our class average was a 59% once. Seriously I think he is a teacher strictly to make students lives miserable. Save yourself and take literally anyone else.
He teaches information that isn't on the exams. Spends more time talking about his political views than teaching statistics.
The worst teacher/professor I have ever had. He takes pride in failing half of his class and loves every second of it. He does things old school and doesn't let you take notes on your laptop or any device. I stressed about my grade in the class so much that it was hard to focus on actually learning the material. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Bruce Barret is outdated he uses extremly old eamples for his teachings and did I mention that for his ST 260 course 75% of your final grade is tests and 25% is attendance. His teaching style is very hard to comprehend and shows little to no remorse for students. I would higly reccomend that this course be taken online or with a different professor
Do not ever take this class unless you want to fail and get told you need to adapt to his ways
You'll either do great or terrible in this class. Lectures are not clear and obscure info can be on tests. Only 3 exams, bonus points, and 25% is attendance. Does not allow hats or electronics in class. Very old school and will sometimes go on political tangents. He's a nice guy and very knowledgeable, but is a very "back in my day" type.
Very difficult, lectures are very fast and hard to follow. He doesn't support technology and talks about random topics for half the class not related to course material. I've heard "the test average is a 65, and that's normal" serval times from him. Do not take his class.
Bruce Barret is the most amazing man ever!!!!! His lectures are super duper easy and he is a super flexible and nice guy!!!! If you want an A+ in Stats, take him!!!! He's awesome!!!!!
No Laptops, No Phones, No Ipads, paper only notes. Attendance Mandatory, Politics comes up a lot, no hats(NEVER WEAR A HAT)
whatever you do DO NOT TAKE HIM. he goes off on these rants and wastes so much class time. he does not support technology and do not even try to wear a hat, you will be asked to leave. He goes so fast on the lectures, I could not keep up. Just take this class online!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bruce Barrett's class is not easy, but he grades fairly and is very passionate about statistics. You will have to study so if you are looking for a breeze by course, he is not your guy. I averaged C's and B's on his tests but his curve gave me an A. Go to class and utilize the study guides/free tutors and you will be fine.
He's a very likable person, but an awful professor. The grading is based on: three tests (75%) and (25%) attendance. You're allowed four unexcused absences, but if you miss a fifth—regardless of how valid your reason is, you have to provide documentation for all five absences for them to be excused. not understanding. I don't recommend!
Bruce is the greatest professor I've had! He truly loves his students and wants them to be successful. If you want brownie points, make sure to wear a cool hat to class! He will love to tell you about his love for hats. He also loves apple products, make sure to bring your laptop!
Great guy, very personable. An old-fashioned teacher who is very knowledgeable. However, overall, it is a challenging class; grades are based on test grades and attendance.
He was ok. I am pretty good at understanding topics based on how much I go to class but this whole class was super difficult to understand. If you want to do well with him,you have to really just get a tutor. He expects you to understand the topic as if he isn't suppose to teach it himself. Very fast paced. NO Phones, NO Electronics, very corny guy
