hmm....
learned SO much
No Comments
hard readings, but fair tests. dry lectures.
very boring and a lots of reading, class notes are very helful, make sure you read the articles!
He was awesome. Lectures are fun and well organized
great lecturer. looked forward to coming to class. he's a hottie. very funny. and keeps topic current, relevant, and humorous.
I hate political science, but Prof. Bimber actually made the class enjoyable. Very charismatic, he holds the stage well in lectures. He's hard though, so do the readings, go to lecture, go to discussion, and study lots!
Great man, learned this sh*t in high school but it was way better hearing it from him. Tons of reading but I really enjoyed the class.
Very clear and precise. Funny insights into politics, such as two supreme court justices getting it on back in the day! Great class.
Great lecturer, but somewhat hard tests... GO TO ALL LECTURES!!!! AND READ!!!!
hard tests!!! big fat paper (10 pages), and not responsive to email. great professor though, make sure you GO TO CLASS, if you don't, you're screwed. reading is equally important. he's a great lecturer. i give him a B.
Very hard tests...must study a lot for the tests. Extremely good lecturer and he holds the stage very well--made me want to go to class.
interesting lectures, study the lecture notes for tests; they are pretty hard. Hard class but worth it!
This was a great class. Make sure you go to lecture. The tests are hard and the multiple choice are very hard, make sure you really study for them. You can't B.S. your way through this class but Bimber is awesome.
Read the books and this class is pretty simple. If you can, get Pearl Galano as a TA, shes really helpful. Lectures used a little in tests, typically he reiterates certain cases or points that he will put on the test. Class is basic knowledge.
Great professor! He has humor to his lectures, very clear, and makes political science interesting. I took this class because of Bimber (my friends recommended him) and I only wish I could take another class with him.
I hated the class, tests were hard, I fell asleep every day because the lectures were awfully boring.
Pretty hard class and the teacher is boring. He makes it somewhat clear if you go to lectures, but this is for sure not a kick back and BS class. Don't take it unless you're a Poli Sci major.
This guy is super smart but his exams are tough. I tried really hard, did all of the assignments and go a B. I usually do nothing and get an A. Watch out!
Great lecturer. Makes poly sci interesting, and shows how much (or how little) of a role you can have on Government. If you have to take a poly sci class, take it with him.
Professor Bimber is a fox, but don't let his good looks fool you. His tests are very difficult and there is a 10 page paper. On the other hand, he is a very clear speaker and if you study and do the reading, an A is possible.
the lectures are long and the multiple choice questions are tricky, but the essays are not bad! he's really interested and motivated and i really enjoyed learning politics for once
this class is fine...lots of information, tests dont quite reflect the class well. either way, midterm is graded on a sweet curve and the class is structured very simply. very nitpicky random multiple choice...he'll skip a huge idea to ask a very specific question. make sure u read the articles book
Excellent lectures, very clear and concise. Tons of information during first half of course. Midterm covered very small details that could easily be skipped over in the 400 pages or so before the midterm. Very helpful on the term paper as well. If interested take PS12 with him!
This guy killed my dreams! His TA's suck, especially Derek- he is a bigot! Too much reading and studying and its all worthless! He is a good lecturer but hardly uses any of his lecture notes on the midterm and final~ avoid this class unless you want to read all ****en day long and write a paper!
extremely hard for a lower division class. dont take it for an easy A..lectures were interesting and informative. midterm and final were difficult..questions coming from lecture, textbook, and reader. TA's are hard graders, nitpicky on short answer questions. LOTS of reading..be prepared to STUDY!!!
Worst lower divison class ever! His TA ( DEREK) is a **** and a bigot. He is unperdictable and hard to follow. Stay away from taking this class unless you want to read day and night! His TA's killed my dreams although Bimber was an excellent orator. He is unorganized and unperdictable too!
Bimber knows how to lecture. Lectures are VERY interesting and he makes good points! But a LOT of reading. One 10 pagepaper: "Does the government dowhat thepeople want (delegate) or does it do what it thinks is right (trustee)?" VERY EASY and BROAD paper.Dont have FRANCOIS as a TA. CLASS RECOMENDED.
hard class, hard tests, lots of reading, long paper, but well worth the work. bimber is so cool.
Bimber is flat out brilliant. He is an excellent speaker, too. HOWEVER, this does not make for a) an easy class, or b) an enjoyable class. His tests ask VERY specific questions, meaning that you will have to pay close attention to huge load of reading. Interesting, but hard to get an A.
Tests are really hard, braod, and difficult to prepare for, but Bimber is a great lecturer. This class will either teach you to be a good student or drown you. Don't have Derek as a TA, he tries to be fun, but ends up being unfocused and unhelpful.
One of the best professors at UCSB. Challenging, but makes learning about American government comprehensible by relating it to real life events college students enjoy!

I think that Bimber is an excellent lecturer and an intelligent man. If you read and go to lectures, you will definitely be successful in this class.
This man is cold and heartless interested only in his own gain no matter what the cost to his students. On that note i would say make sure you sight EVERYTHING!!
He is a very good professor and his lectures are VERY clear and a lot of interesting material to learn. He seems very intellectual in the subject matter. Plus, I find him a bit sexy.
Bimber is a good speaker and the course material is interesting to learn about. However, the class is pretty challenging. There is a lot of reading that you will be accountable for on the tests. Also, the tests ask very specific questions that are in short answer format (you must answer them all). This made the class a lot less enjoyable.
One of the best Political Science courses I have ever taken. He knows what he is talking about and is very approachable, the paper is long, but doable, there is enough info to get it done. I recommend taking this class.
Good lecturer, but talks really fast so hard to take notes. There is a LOT of reading in this class. Midterm and Final was HARD! I would not take this class unless you want to have your head in a book all the time. There is a lot of information and only asked for a little of it on the exam. Everything on the test is short answer. He grades hard.
The material was very difficult and the tests are quite stressful, but you learn a lot in this class. The material was dry at times, but the professor did a great job.
Bimber is freaking amazing. I love this class. DO NOT take Kathleen for a TA. She's mean to some students and she's not really all that smart. She's useless and complains a lot.
This was a really challenging class, but it was incredibly interesting and helpful! Prof Bimber is very intelligent and willing to help if needed. He doesn't rely on lecture notes so attendance is important (along with reading) but if you put in the effort you will get a good grade. Take this class!!!
Bimber is very intelligent! and i highly recommend taking his class. His tests are very straightforward. As long as you attend class, and do the reading you should be fine... I also recommend mario as a TA i heard he has his own website and gives his students test notes and term paper tips...
cool guy but requires a lot of work. dont take unless you are truly interested in political science...class is really boring and there isnt much notes to take. if you like politics then you will like this class. mid/final were manageable but def not easy.
Very good lecturer and speaker, recommend taking a laptop to his class as he has lots to say; just listen carefully and you should do fine. Tests are based on the reading; I got lucky and didn't do too much of it and got a B. 10 page paper, however, may throw you off but it's a lot of room to express your analysis of political science.
This class wasn't that bad. I'm not a Pol Sci major, so I just took for gen ed requirement. Bimber is a good lecturer, but the class focuses too much on the reading. Doesn't talk too much about current events, more history. Take section with MARIO! I would've been so lost without him.
BOOORING most of the time, and lectures are too condensed to get everything down. Tests dont even cover half of what he says. Class is pretty difficult, and I'm a poli-sci major. The tests are there to trick you- best possible answer out of a bunch of correct answers. RAWRRR Bimber, but a really nice guy.
Bimbers an amazing speaker and gives great lectures but the class is extremely difficult. He focuses mostly on the readings which are extensive. The tests are very difficult because there are three right answers for every multiple choice question. Don't take class unless you're into political science.
I love Bimber! He's a great lecturer. Even if your not into poli sci this class is good. The lectures are very clear and the text book isnt that bad. I recommend going to all lectures as there usually pretty important. Also you have to study a good amount for the midterm and final in order to do good. Try to get Mario as your TA, Hes GREAT!
Amazing teacher! Lectures are really interesting and he is very engaging and definitely knows what he is talking about. You should attend every lecture but readings aren't that necessary as long as you look up a summary online. Try to get Mario as a TA if possible because he give you summaries of all the chapters and online readers!
Bimber is very engaging and a good orator. He has a lot to say though and its hard to get everything down. Attending lectures is a must and staying up on the readings because the exam questions come mostly from the readings and the book. Don't get Gina as a TA though, she is very abrasive and is not open to students' opinions! Overall, good class!
Great professor! lectures are super insightful, Mario is the BEST TA!! and bimber's hilarious if you get his jokes :). Oh and he's pretty hot.
Loved him and loved this class! Everyone should take this. He is very engaging and the class material is interesting.
Bimber is smart, but seems bored during the lectures. Lots of PP, reading is intense and exams are difficult. Grading is a toss up, ultimately depends on TA. The group project was a bit unorganized and lacked focus. He is a GOOD prof, will accommodate your needs and answer all questions. Don't slack off, this is NOT an easy A.
Lecture slides are extremely lacking. Section was quite literally the most useless section I've ever had and I've taken most PS classes. If you need an AP class take ANYTHING else. 2 midterms (in which an A- was a 95%), a project worth 10% but takes up most of your time and a final that tests you not only on readings but other presentations.
Horribly structured and managed class. Two midterms, a project, a final. Curve is strange and unexplained: 94 is a B+, 95 is an A-. Readings are dense and tests require knowledge of specifics. Section was useless with TA receiving no help. Little to no feedback on assignments. Made a mess of a fascinating subject. Skip this one if you can!
I really like Professor Bimber. He is very clear, knows what he is talking about. It is a lot of reading, and you should go to lecture. I would not take this class if you don't like politics, specially how the government is ran. This is one of those classes where if you are interested you'll love it, but if you aren't you'll hate it. Good Luck
Good prof in my opinion. Tests are based on lectures and the textbook, so going to lecture is a good idea if you want a good grade. Class requires effort - but if you're interested in politics and gov it's enjoyable. Grade is based on two midterms, final, and term paper. When class did poorly on the 1st midterm he adjusted the 2nd showing care.
I took PolSci12 during an election year, and I would definitely recommend it if possible, he helped us stay up to date and explained what was going on and why it was important. He did a good job of remaining politically unbiased while still teaching what was important and looking at the bigger picture.
Prof Bimber is really smart and def knows his stuff. Tests are heavily on the readings and lectures so make sure you do the readings (or just skim and write down abstract and conclusion). 1 major group project throughout the quarter which wasn't too bad. This class is pretty challenging but if you take notes you will be fine!
Very kind and accommodating. Gives engaging and interesting lectures. A large component of the class grade is a group project though, so be wary if those are not your cup of tea.
Bimber is a great guy and is obviously very passionate about his field of study (political communication). The class had a lot of projects and one large group project, and the lectures were pretty dense. This made the class a little difficult but your grade averages out. Overall, the class was really interesting and the workload was manageable.
lectures can be a little dry sometimes but he's a sweet guy! wants students to learn and use the content from class. technically the content is not hard to memorize (communication heavy) but there's a ton of readings, homework, and a time-consuming group project. yet bc of that, the final and midterm aren't weighed as heavy as other pols classes
Really interesting lectures that are easy to follow. You could tell this professor puts in his efforts for this subject. You do have to read the full textbook and there are quizzes that follow the reading, but if you find a schedule to break up the reading, this class would be so worth it.
Good professor however if you are a first year and are taking this class I advise you not to. The teaching style is hard to adjust to. It's all memory based and relies heavily on the book which contains a lot of information.
Prof clearly passionate & kinda funny. May bore you if you're not interested in poli sci bcs the class info is dense & memorization is needed for the tests. Was pretty easy conceptually bcs I took AP Gov (just not the test) which was a great foundation. Lecture attendance not mandatory but sections are. Put in effort & you get out what you give :)
I really liked his lectures and the content he goes over and the way he presents it. He goes over the foundations of government while also tying in real world events and examples, such as the Donald Trump court cases. I didn't like the online textbook part because you HAD to buy it for assignment purposes. It cost $50 and expired in 9 months.
SO hard. Not even a poli sci major and took because 2 GE's. Technically got C+ but since not my major I just took a pass lol. So hard for no reason and very reading heavy. lectures are boring and tests don't exactly match up. averages always a C on midterm and final and no curve so everyone got a C or just took a pass. skip this class if possible
Supre knowledgeable professor, and clearly passionate about Poli-sci. Not an easy class though. Tough midterm and final, but the final project was easy. Make sure to go over ALL quiz questions (that's a LOT), as they will appear on your exams. The short response was easy as long as you go to lectures. Overall, learned a lot, love his style.
Workload is very easy and he is a great teacher. Grade is mainly based on mid term and final as well as a paper. The tests are moderately difficult but if you go to lecture and prepare they're not bad.
I wanted to like this class, but I was told verbatim by a TA "we were only allowed to give out a limited number 10/10s" by the professor on tests, despite the accuracy of student responses. This was extremely frustrating and I would not take this class again due to his grading policies.
Bimber was an enjoyable lecturer and professor overall. However, he said certain material would be on the exams and then used completely different material and blindsided everyone. Had 1 midterm and 1 final that were weighted pretty heavily and included MCQs along with SAQs. Felt like they were looking for pretty specific things on the SAQ portion.
I love professor Bimber. His class was so interesting and I learned so much. However, there is a big group project that is weighted heavy, but overall 10/10 class. He is so funny and a great lecturer.
Great lectures which exam SAQs always pull from, so take super-detailed notes. Quizzes are easy to pass. Readings are dense and not often seen on exams, but do them anyways. Covers very interesting modern-day material. Has definitely improved on making exam questions match lecture content — just pay attention. TAs are friendly and accessible.
Amazing professor! He made the material so interesting and knows how to engage you. There are 3 writing assignments (two of which are based on what is said in section). Two midterms and a final. They aren't crazy hard, the TAs are very sweet and want you to succeed. He does expect you to read an entire textbook and everything is said in lecture
Loved this class! You have to put in the work for an A and there is a lot of reading every week, but the content of the class was super interesting. I really enjoyed Professor Bimber's lectures! Take good notes in lecture, it will help for the tests. 3 easy writing assignments, 2 midterms and 1 final. The TAs were also great and super helpful.
I LOVED this class. I took Pol 12 and Prof Bimber did a fantastic job. He's a great lecturer and organized presenter. Lecture flew by. There's lots of reading for this class, but the content's interesting so I didn't mind. Highly recommend!
Bruce Bimber is a great lecturer, but the class itself is tough. It has a midterm, a quarter-long group project, a final, and section participation. The real issue is the exams; they demand memorizing obscure details, making the course feel like a grad class pretending to be for undergrads. The only good thing was Pierce, the TA. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Good professor overall, but the course is extremely exam-heavy. 60% of your grade comes from just two tests, so messing up on even one puts you in a position where recovering your grade is impossible. lectures are solid professor knows the material, but the grading structure creates a lot of pressure. If you're not a strong test-taker don't take.
Prof Bimber's class was truly phenomenal. The class is a challenging graduate-style course, where the midterm and final were a large portion of the grade, largely based on research articles. Bimber is a great lecturer, and the more you put into the class, the more you will get out. Go to office hours, collaborate with friends. It's worth it! 10/10
Not sure why my honest review keeps being removed, maybe someone is insecure. This class should be avoided at all costs. So many readings/studies are expected to be comprehended at a high level. The section never helped on the exam (readings discussed in section would never be on the exam, so it felt like a total waste of brain space). Merry Xmas!
