This was an interesting class. The professor presented the material really well by outlining the important passages from the book called the dialogues of Plato.
The Philosophy through Science Fiction course was a fun class, in that the material that we covered for the most part wasn't boring to read or discuss. Plus, we went in-depth over a wide variety of Books, namely Fahrenheit 451, Slaughter House 5, Call of Cthulhu, and Road Side-Picnic. We also watched plenty of Sci-Fi movies during the readings too.
Dr. Buchanan is a well educated, thoughtful, and positive professor. He is able to bring a vast arrange of insights into his Introduction to Philosophy class. The bulk of the course was centered around the famous Dialogues of Plato. We covered, in depth, the Apology, Crito, Phaedo, Euthyphro, and the Symposium. My favorite dialogue was the Apology
Dr. Buchanan is earnest, eager, and very willing to engage in philosophical, political, or ethical discourse. One can come by his office any time, and find their waiting a systematic and stylized discourse of a wide-arrange of topics. He is honest, caring, personable, and very willing to help any student, in any matter they might require him in.
This class will make you rethink your morale code.
I wished all the teachers at VU was as clear, helpful, friendly, and caring for their students as professor Buchanan!!!! I had him for Ethic last year and this spring 2013, and all I can said is that "HE IS A MUST FOR THE UNIVERSITY" because he is always available for the students when needed and you can't go wrong if you take his class!
Well read and very knowledgeable of the topics he covers. Dr. Buchanan cares a lot about his students and was always available outside of class if you needed his help with an assignment or just wanted to talk further about the subject material. If you have to take a philosophy elective at VU I highly recommend taking one of Dr. Buchanan's courses.
Philosophy truly is the foundation and root of nearly all scholastic areas of study. Be prepared to either for strengthen what your claims, or change them all together. Had a blast in the class, professor Buchanan is a treasure to the department of Philosophy."Live every day like it's your last, BUT LEARN, like you will live forever". GANDI
He is a very nice teacher, and always looking to help you if needed
Really great professor! I had him for my intro to philosophy and he is very knowledgeable. At his office if you ever need to talk about philosophical concepts or just life. We did not really have a "textbook" but we did read various works from philosophers and I would have to say my favorite was "Notes From the Underground" by Dostoevsky.
I greatly enjoyed this class. It was challenging, but with great instruction. Philosophy and science fiction go hand in hand. I look forward to taking more classes with Mr. Buchanan.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Buchanan's Introduction to ethics class. He was very passionate about what he was teaching and made the course material (which at times could be very in depth) very easy to understand! I would recommend this course and professor to any one.
Awesome class for Philosophy majors and anyone interested in Science Fiction. Dr. Buchanan does an excellent job of revealing the hidden philosophical notions within science fiction literature.
This class was mandatory and before I started it, I was dreading it. Mr. Buchanan made every topic fair and interesting. He was available outside of class if I needed to meet. He was very prepared and organized every class meeting. I would recommend him to anyone attending VU in the philosophy field.
Very good professor in my opinion. I've currently taken 3 semesters at two universities and he's been one of the best professors that I've had. Very effective at clarifying on theories and course material related to the class. He even goes out of his way to find current day situations that embody the coursework.
Very good professor. Very helpful and made the course very interesting.
Professor Buchanan made this class very interesting and was always helpful. I would recommend taking this class with Professor Buchanan to anyone.
He helped me understand philosophy and made me want to understand more of it.
Great teacher, One of the best I've had.
The course was fun and very interesting. We read from different science fiction novels/stories. Professor Buchanan did a great job of teaching, mentoring and being available for help or further discussion
Mr. Buchanan was very knowledgeable. He tapped into the basics of philosophy not expecting the class to become experts in the field sense it was only a intro class. We read many short novels from popular philosophers like Nietzsche, shopehour, plato, etc.
You can tell he truly cares about his students, plus he goes really easy on everyone.
This class was very helpful and furtherd my understanding of Philosophy. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to take Philosophy, or who just wants to take a class that is both easy and informative on the Science Fiction genera.
Professor Buchanan is a great teacher and really explained things very in depth and made it easy for everyone to succeed. I would recommend him to anyone needing to take an ethics class. He really increased my interest in ethical topics. I really enjoyed having the class and Mr. Buchanan. He helped me become much more openminded and well rounded.
Professor Buchanan is a great professor. He really cares about his students and is passionate about philosophy. He is more than qualified for the job. I enjoyed his lectures.
You will think you are learning nothing but it's an easy A. You'll have a three page easy paper. I only did maybe 1 and a half and received a b or a c on it. Just pay attention and you'll learn more then you think
Professor Buchanon is very knowledgeable is this field and you can't help but learn from him. He has a good sense of what each of his students are really capable of and he will challenge you to go beyond that. He is also very good at teaching so everyone walks away from his class having really learned something! I would recommend him to others
He is very very smart. Students get along with him great. His tests were difficult, you could not pass them unless you study, which is the point, so it was FAIR. If you did study for them, then you could fly through them. He was a good teacher. I respect him.
Mr. Buchanan is always there for you when you him. I recommend if you don't understand something in his class, you should go to his office hours and he will explain to where you understand it. Great teacher.
Great class, Buchanan was very interactive and knowledgeable about the subjects being taught. He offered chances for extra credit and created a fun atmosphere.
Prof. Buchanan went above the average use of a textbook by having the class read primary sources from philosophers studied in class. Being able to read directly from the authors helped me spark an interest in philosophy. Thanks to avoiding mundane readings from a textbook this class was truly dependent on the philosophies of the authors.
The class is challenging and thought provoking. It is reading intensive. Mr. Buchanan welcomed and encouraged discussion of the subject matters in class. Furthermore, he was available outside of class, during office hours or via email, to answer additional questions. It was a very interesting class.
Professor Buchanan was a great easy going teacher. We learned lots of interesting and new things. He clearly knows what he is talking about, but he will make you work for your grade. You have to study for his test. He will readily help you; all that you have to do is ask. He is readily available and I would recommend him as a teacher.
I took this class hoping to step out of my comfort zone. I loved this class. I had to read books that I normally wouldn't have chose and I loved them. I had to think on a different level and I was challenged each class period. We always had good class discussions. I would absolutely recommend this class and Mr. Buchanan.
Professor Buchanan is always really interested in what he teaches, and is always willing to help his students. The class is encouraged to ask any questions that might come to mind. Professor Buchanan not only teaches his students, but he encourages them to learn from each other as well. I would highly recommend this professor.
Professor Buchanan is an amazing professor who loves to help his students understand the material that he goes over in class. If one is not understanding of a particular topic, he will go out of his way to make sure everyone understands this until everyone gets before he continues the lecture. He also helps out side of class. I love this professor
I really enjoyed the class
Professor Buchanan is consistent in his teaching style, he uses a variety of examples to help students further explore major themes which compliment his lectures. Mr. Buchanan encourages his students to think outside of the box, he is respectful & has excellent communication skills. I loved having him as a teacher this last semester.
It was a great class. It was not to hard but it also was not easy that you will get bord. It is a good class if you are willing to listen.
Great class, there should be more like it.
I was very wary taking this class, but I was taken back on how well Prof. Buchanan made this class incredibly interesting. He is very knowledgable about ethics and philosophy and is very eager to answer questions effectively.
It's a really fun class. The only thing that mad me sad, was there wasn't a section on the Kabbalah. He did give me suggestions for books that would allow me to learn about it though. Most people in the class didn't seem that interested in the Kabbalah though, so it was okay.
Great teacher only 4 grades all year though :/ and one is a debate that he give everyone an 89, this sucks for your "A" students that really worked for the grade. The class is so easy. You can skip every day and get an A. Tough subject but not a tough grader. You show up to test day your good. Besides this great guy. DONOT BUY TEXT BOOOK
Awesome, fun, and down to earth Professor.
The professor is really into the material in the class which makes it easier for you to be interested in it too. He wants you to pass the class and will do anything to help you out. We watched some great documentaries and had plenty of extra credit opportunities.
Great teacher! Had trouble and he really helped!
The class was overall more interesting than i anticipated. He's very knowledgeable in his field and you can see he own passion in the subject during his lectures.
Course was always interesting and taught in a way that made course material easy to understand. Nice professor.
I had never taken a philosophy class before and this class was interesting and allowed me to get my feet wet and not feel overwhelmed.
The class not only taught me philosophical perspectives, but also how to use those in today's life and world. Helped me out a lot. Thank you.
Professor Buchanan is very friendly and is always willing to meet during office hours if you don't understand something in class. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities if you are struggling. Attendance and participation are very important and checking your e-mail is a must.
Prof Buchanan is an excellent professor that VU & it's students are lucky to have. Very well educated and it shows in his teaching style. Every book he selects prepares you for future classes and is aimed at increasing your vocabulary. His lectures are good if you pay attention, and help you understand new concepts. He's available for extra help.
Great teacher and great role model. His work ethic is beyond his pay. One of the best teachers at VU!
He's a great teacher in the class room and nice to talk to out side of the classroom.
Professor Buchanan does not lecture so much as he engages his students in the discussion. Everyone has an opportunity to voice their opinion of the selected reading material. The material itself was highly interesting. I would say that he is a very fair grader- if you read and participate then you should have no problem passing the class I took.
Mr. Buchanan is fluent in speaking the German language and also very keen on their history and culture. However, he is still an American at heart, so expect understanding when you mess up on quizzes or oral presentations. He still expects you to learn, and to be able to pronounce the language properly. The atmosphere of the class is fun!
This course is for the lover of sci phi. You will start with classics such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, or Blade Runner, and the discuss the deeper themes the books present. Extra credit is always available, which involves watching various sci phi films with depth such as the original Ghost in the Shell. It is a fun course!
Professor Buchanan is a fantastic philosophy teacher. His knowledge on the subject is unquestionable and he is able to flawlessly tie the subjective perspective of the subject with science fiction. Professor Buchanan relies heavily on the student's willingness to read the class material, attend regularly, and intelligently speak about the material.
Great Professor, He's easy going and you will learn a lot including stuff outside of the course work.
Interesting topics discussed
To get a good grade you need to listen to the lectures, take good notes, and study what he recommends in class, thoroughly.
Prof. Buchanan was a good, supportive teacher who would answer questions anytime if we were confused as to what to do. He was also a great conversationalist and it was always nice talking to him outside of class time.
Mr Buchanan is a good teacher, who ever enjoy Philosophy should take his course.
I have to say that Mr. Buchanan has been one of the greatest professors I have had during my time at Vincennes University. I was very inspired by him. His amount of knowledge is outstanding. He opened my eyes to new things. If I had to more space in here I'd write more great things about him.
1 Critical Thinking paper
Very respectful and understanding. He was not afraid to challenge and question anyone's perspective, and he made that clear from the start. A lot of reading, and a lot to cover in one semester. He is very knowledgeable and well-read on the subjects he teaches, and is very good about creating meaningful and engaged discussions in class. Recommended.
I went into this class thinking that I just needed it to get through school, however, I found that I really enjoyed this class compared to most classes I have taken. He challenged thought, and I actually enjoyed the lectures that was a combination of genius, humor, and very descriptive examples. overall, I would take his class again when possible.
He was a very good professor could have used more notes or done a few PowerPoints
Easy teacher. Great to get along with and always has interesting stories to tell!
Went above and beyond to help students with questions and any additional help requested. If you ask for help, try your best, put a good effort forward, and keep an open mind it will pay off. excellent instructor with massive knowledge.
There was nothing I didn't love about the class, it was amazing, like actually amazing.
This Professor is AMAZING! Always there if you have questions, is able to have great conversations with, in and out of class. Hes very respectful and the books you use in class arent textbooks but regular books that are very interesting if you like sci-fi and he incorporates movies into the material as well. I would recommend this class to anyone
This was a great class. I learned to be science-fiction even more thanks to this class. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Its an interesting class. Go to class, participate, ask questions, and keep up on your reading and you should be fine. Assume nothing and keep an open mind. He was different than any other professor Ive had, and kept class very interesting. He is easy to talk to and willing to help you through problems.
Professor Buchanan is a fair, caring, and down to earth man who has what appeared to be an adept knowledge of the history of philosophy and philosophy of culture. His was my favorite class this past semester. I can't say enough good about Professor Buchanan.
It's a reading intensive course, but most definitely fun. I probably read more, and enjoyed it, in this class than I have most of my educational career. Buchanan is easygoing and accessible through email and his office. He gives everyone the opportunity to ask questions. I took this class outside my major because of past experience with his classes
I really enjoyed having Professor Buchanan! I had so much fun in this class and would definitely recommend it. The class was very laid back, but participation and doing the few assignments are key. The discussions were interesting and mentally stimulating without being too difficult. This is one of my favorite classes I've taken in college so far!
Many people do not learn philosophy anymore, so some may get confused by the content. Read the material. Ask questions in class. Ask questions outside of class. The professor is kind, receptive of students, and has a wide knowledge of the material. The professor worked with me on many occasions to clarify the information and is easy to work with.
Professor Buchanan was a great teacher for my PHIL 111 class. There is a lot of reading required for the class but thats how you understand the criteria the best. He challenges students to think of common incidents and use those to convey greater ideas about philosophy. Overall loved the class!
Great Professor!!
A great lecturer honestly, most of what we needed to know and were tested on could be gleaned from the lectures alone. The required videos acted more as a supplement rather than a replacement, and as long as you did a quick refresher before the test it wasn't hard to pass if you payed attention.
Mr. Buchanan was very thorough during all class lectures. He always made sure to touch on all major points and answer questions during lectures. He also made himself available outside of class for any additional help.
Mr. Buchanan is such a nice teacher, and you can tell he really knows his stuff! I do have to say be careful when it comes to taking test, because he does change some of the wording around to make the questions a little tricky. If you read & pay attention to the lecturers this class is an easy A!
Great Professor, explains things well and is more than happy to go over things if needed. Lectures are very common and can get boring, but he does a good job of keeping people engaged. Provides great films throughout the course to keep it fresh and give a better understanding on the topic at hand. Very understanding and isn't strict.
I enjoyed the topics covered in this class. I liked the jokes that the professor told. The material was insightful and thought provoking.
I have taken a couple of courses with Professor Buchanan. I received an "A" in both courses. Professor Buchanan is down-to-Earth and very knowledgeable. He is approachable and extremely kind. If you care about your education, take one of his courses. He will not fail in providing you with a wholesome, rewarding experience. 10/10 would take again!
This was my very first time taking any philosophy class so I was pretty nervous about how I would do. Professor Buchanan definitely explained things very in-depth until I understood it or whoever asked the question. I could tell he cared about us as his students by asking us about our week, work, and family, he also answered my emails quickly.
This professor really cares about his students performance. He was always reachable outside the classroom or zoom call. He made lectures more relatable and easier to learn. I would take another course of his.
Out of all the instructors I have had, Buchanan has been among the most caring, passionate, and effective of them all. He has a clear interest in Philosophy, and an almost esoteric expertise in the field. Not only does he show interest in the subject he teaches, but also in the student. His discussions/assignments are focused on your perspectives.
Professor Buchanan was one of the best professors that I had this spring His classes were so smooth as he was open in communication and was always there outside of class to help He ensured that he gave us all the materials needed to pass his class and on top of that he guided us through them. The ethics class was really exemplary.
I took intro to ethics class this fall semester and it was one of the best classes I've taken at the university. This course even during this difficult time was organzied and the professor was exceptionally understanding and willing to work with students. I personally will never forget this class and will take on with me the things I have learned.
I just assumed it would be a throwaway class of sorts. I was very wrong. Mr. Buchanan made the class very interesting and easy for me to understand. I am glad I took the class and I dont think any person couldve taught me better or opened up my eyes more than Mr. Buchanan. Im grateful to say I was part of the class.
I had to take an ethics course for my major, and I took intro to ethics taught by Bruce Buchanan. I thought the class was going to be boring, but turns out I was wrong. He goes over ethical topics that make you critically think about your answer. Overall he was an amazing teacher and I would take his class again.
