Sorry but I don't find him helpful at all. You are required to read a lot and he will stress this point a lot through out the semester. I did well on the first exam but it went downhill from there. I read every chapter but the questions on the tests were tricky. I don't recommend to take his class if you have other priorities.
He is not the best professor but he makes it very easy to pass the class especially if science is not your best subject. Most of the class work involved watching movies that kinda pertained to the subject and personal stories. I had to really read the book and take my own detailed notes to pass. He does give a curb and no labs just a 100.
Nice guy, you must read your chapters before class in order to understand his lectures. He will help those who help themselves, likes to talk about his family and personal experiences but stories tie into course material. It's not an easy class but he is a helpful teacher and if you apply yourself and try you will pass.
If you read you will pass the class, as simple as that. He helps and will look out for you as long as you are trying. He wants participation to help the lectures go by. He will drag you for not studying or reading before lecture. All in all, a good professor.
Bruce is a nice guy, but Bio for science majors has been the hardest course I've ever taken. Just going to class and taking notes doesn't cut it. You have to read, read, and READ! During lecture, he spends most of his time emphasizing on how you must study practically 247 for bio. Tests are difficult to understand. Get ready to have no life.
I'm actually a Bio Major, and this class is good. I was having doubts about changing my major but I enjoyed this class. Just read, read, read. Time off doesn't not mean time away (his saying) so study!!!! And he also doesn't make it all about Bio he talks about life, it's interesting. Awesome teacher!!
Took for summer course (non-majors) Be prepared to read a lot and discuss feedback of current reading material he assigns. Each week we had a test over 2-3 chapters we read. His lectures are very detailed and outlined. Currently enrolled, gives 3-4 weeks for reading material. Class course requires time, dedication, and there are no reviews.
Charming, intelligent professor.. You won't fall asleep during class. He helps connect textbook readings to words you might understand. It's important to read and study before, after and during class!! Tests are nothing you could imagine.. You have to do a lot of critical thinking to pass.. and study,study,study..
Made an A in the class but would never recommend taking his class to anyone else. He made biology way harder than it actually is (and I am a biology major) but he is really hilarious, which helps.
This class is tough in general, but not impossible. Professor Carroll does his best to ensure that every student succeeds in this course. You MUST read and study A LOT if you want to pass! He makes the lectures fun and gives no labs just 100s if you show up. Grades based solely on tests, which are TOUGH and hard to understand.
This class was so hard for me! Professor Carroll was my 3rd time taking this class. I am so excited that I passed the class this time around. The professor is hilarious he makes learning fun and easy but you do have to read!!!
At first he seems very nice and tries to be funny, but he's not funny at all. Gets off topic a lot, tells you a lot of personally stories that don't involve biology. He teaches from the powerpoints and lectures are long and way boring. lectures don't coincide with his exams, you won't pass if you don't read. gives so many motivational speeches. :P
Great teacher!! This was the hardest class i have ever taken but he did his best to help you out! Your grade is earned not given. You have to study and work for it. Very inspirational teacher and i learned more about life that biology!
He is one of the worst professors I have had, half of his lectures have nothing to do with Biology. If the tests were over how he hates white people or how he grew up in a one room house maybe that would make a difference. Don't take this class.
Most of you won't be successful because when you're studying, and you get tired, you quit! I've spent 22 hours studying for the 1st exam, read every chapter. I failed the exam. I question myself and how I did so badly. I got smacked in the mouth with the results. That's life! I had two options, quit or continue. I'm not a quitter.
Biology is difficult, no doubt about it but Mr. Carroll will help you understand the material. You need to do your part and study constantly. Exams are difficult and the majority of the questions are scenarios, not the concept. :/ He's a nice and funny guy and gives motivation speeches about life during lecture or lab.
Prof. Carroll was a great teacher, but if you want an 'A' you must work for it. No doubt about it. His lectures consisted of extending your comprehension from your own individual reading of each chapter. His class consists of 4 tests, a final, and one lab grade, so it is crucial to do your best in all the assignments.
I took professor Carroll for biol 1408 and at first it was hard for me because I wasn't use to studying hard for a class but then I got use to his test and started doing a lot better. He has 4 exams 1 final and whatever you get on the final he will replace with your lowest grade which helps a lot . he's super funny and now I have him again for 1409
Professor Carrol is a stepping stool on your way to success not only does he teach us biology but he compares it to our everyday lives so that it can actually have a meaning to it. PAY THE MAN!
Mr Carroll is a really good teacher. I respect him immensely. Lectures can be long and boring. READ THE BOOK AND SHOW UP FOR CLASS you will fail otherwise. Tests are difficult, they are worded differently than what you learn in the book. I recommend going to tutoring while taking this class, it is fast paced so you need to keep up with the material
He's an excellent Professor! However, if your working full time, kids and school you shouldn't take him because his class requires full attention. In order to pass his test, you have to read the book, print out the powerpoints and watch the videos from D2L. I strongly recommend him for those w/o a heavy load at school or home. He will work you.
He was so funny! Summer class was made easy with the help of his stories, and sense of humor. Even though the material was tough, it was his personality that made the class intriguing.
Prof. Carroll is one of thoes one of a kind teachers that you will never forget. He seemlessly intergrates complex biology into your everyday life. There are only 4 test and a final that has the same questions as the other test. No curve balls! Just read or watch the module videos when he tell you and you will get an EASY A! P.S. He is hilarous!
Dr. Carroll's class is very simple. All you have to do is read the assigned chapters (book is absolutely necessary) and you'll easily pass. His lectures are hard to follow and confusing if you don't read the material before hand. He gives free grades for lab as long as you show up. The only grades are 4 tests and a final. No homework, just reading.
Dr. Carroll is an AMAZING teacher, I took his class 2017 Spring semester and I did not regret taking him. His tests are a little different of what he lectures. but if you get the big picture then you're good to go. He has a good sense of humor and cares for his students. I recommend taking him, you won't regret it.
Great Proffessor! As long as you read the chapters and review the PowerPoints you will pass. He can get long winded sometimes but other than that its a great class to take with him.
I took Professor Carroll for both 1408 and 1409 and I did not regret taking him. His personality is amazing and he made the class enjoyable. However, you need to read the textbook and look at the powerpoints in order to do well in this class. You need to get the big picture in order to pass his tests. I recommend taking him for Biology.
Dr. Carroll is literally one of the funniest professor I've ever had. I just finished his class today, I took him for Summer. There are 4 exams, 1 final that replaces your lowest grade. Reading the book is necessary and paying attention when he lectures with PP. When he lectures you'll understand better than the book. TAKE HIM he is the best!
Great professor!
He is very caring and the numbers work to your advantage. Studying really matters. I liked to study to power points and go over it better.
Professor Carroll was literally the best. I STRONGLY recommend everyone to take his class he is very funny and the numbers work to your advantage very good class. I strongly also recommend read the book and review the powerpoints and the test will be easy. He is the best professor I have ever had.
Best professor to take for non-majors. He makes a boring subject somewhat interesting, and is there for extra help. Only homework is reading the textbook (which I highly recommend or you will fail the tests). Took him for both 1408 and 1409 and received good grades.
he is a very well spoken professor and very funny. He really helps you a lot . you do need your text book he do everything by the book. he review well before the test.
Hands down best person I have ever had teaching me Science. You are graded by your exams & lab. No extra credit. No study guides, but that's ok because he reveiws daily. If he feels like the class needs more time, he pushes back a test and spends that time reveiwing. He onlu asks to read one section of the textbook a day.
I had a great semester in Mr. Carroll's Biol 1408 class he is very funny and keeps you awake lol. He helps you to understand the lectures along with lab assignments and during COVID-19 we had to have classes online it was rough but he still kept the same energy. He was a joy to meet there is no one like him lol.
This was an online class and I finished months before the class ended. There are 4 exams including the final exam and theyre easy As. There is work that has to be done but it is so easy and not for a grade but for participation. The work only lets you continue if you get the answers right. It takes about 30-1 hr. to complete these tasks. Easy!!!
WAY TO MUCH WORK FOR NON BIOLOGY MAJOR
I am currently taking ENVR 1401 100% online, there was a mandatory meeting for the first class to discuss syllabus and expectations. All work was due at the end of semester, except for 4 tests that were only open for one day. Fairly easy course to complete as it is all laid out in syllabus. I can say the 12 smart book assignments are pretty lengthy
As a dual credit student, it is by far the easiest to pass. His chapter assignments are a bit long but manageable. His tests are also quite easy. However, pay attention in class!
Quick with emails. He is nice! Because exercises is through mcgraw hill, some concept are long, for students who are taking more classes, it can be a little hard since it takes time. 4 exam, one final, labs are only videos. TAKE HIMMM
I took Professor Bruce Carrol for BIOL 1408. I 100% recommend for you all to take his class in person. He may have early lectures but it's totally worth it. He has a good sense of humor and speaks all and nothing but the truth. He knows what he's doing when it comes to teaching. Besides all the good things the Smartbook can be very time-consuming.
I took him for envr 1401 online, he gives you 1 assignment a week but its VERY time consuming. I was always on top of my game until the last week of finals, my family & I lost a family member. I reached out to him to see if he could allow me a diff day to take the final and he never answered. I suspected as much since he never answered my emails.
Professor Carroll truly cares about his students and always made lecture fun. Homework could get a little lengthy but is manageable.
Professor Carroll was an amazing professor who really cares about the well-being of his students. I took Biology 1409 with him as an 8 week course. All assignments are on McGraw Hill Connect. If you put forth the effort, you will get a good grade. I would recommend taking him.
8-week ENVR 1401 - This class was great!!!! Excellent credit for the non-science major. Prof Carroll is nice! Class is very organized and he is quick with emails and grading. HW & Exams are through McGraw Hill Connect. Most hw concepts are long (2-3 hours.) 4 exams, 1 final, 4 labs (interactive videos) TAKE HIMMM
I cant even explain how much this class helped my semester go smooth. I was terrified when it came to taking BIO1408/1409 I took BIO1409 and ENVR1401 with him and it was super smooth and easy. I really wish I would of took 1408 with him. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! I PROMISE you will NOT regret it. Please trust me, his class was easy.
Professor Carroll makes a dull subject engaging. Attend class, read the textbook, and you'll do well. Unstuck study and other tools like ChatGPT helped me prep for exams.
Get ready to work b. No but seriously, he's a really good teacher to consider. I would've taken him again for biology 1409 or wtv the next one was if I wasn't studying abroad. He works with you, gives you good feedback, checks in how you are doing, isn't a heavy grade, participation matters, and just get your stuff done. Communicate with him.
Really great professor. He's extremely nice and takes questions well. Online exams and ungraded labs. The only complaint was that he gives out a LOT of work through "smartbooks". Since they are online and only due at the end of the semester, you can just take like 3 hours a week to work on a chapter or 2. TL;DR: easy, slightly time-consuming class
Very simple lecture and lab based classes where labs are not graded. As a result the class is really stress free and engaging. As long as you complete the tests and online assignments you will be golden. Side note, really great guy to have a conversation with and ask for advice. (Funny too!)
