He loves TI83 more than he loves the course
hard but helpfull
If you are looking for an easy class...move on slacker. Over half in my class dropped. If you work hard, he'll work hard to help you.
Extremely extraordinary professor. You will see the difference between you and those who have taken the same course with other professors. Not to mention the very professional way of constructing the course and its materials. HOWEVER, those who are not ha
An extraordinary man with a passion for math & how it can be used in the world. If you are willing to work hard you can succeed in his class. He stays late after class, encourages emails & always responds even if it is 1:00 AM the night before a test. A+
One of the best math teachers I've had. Will always help you, no matter what your question is.Very approachable. You gotta study to keep up,though.
Quote from a classmate "If you want to learn Calculus, take Colletti's class. If you want an easy A, take someone else." I definitely recommend Bruce. He may seem very demanding and difficult, but he will bend over backwards to help you succeed. I'm a prime example. Got a 72,69,63 on the first three tests and then a 96 on final. Final grade: A
he is totally ****ed up!! never take his class!! so far, 80% of our class droped this class!!
He is an ideot and stupied. don't expect his help. i don't recomand for anyone ....
great professor.....inspiring.....it's not hard to get an A if you just study the problems he solves in class....More than 90% of the questions he asks are the ones he solves in the class....keep up with the work, don't miss any class and you will do fine...
Class is taught at a level that is fit for bigger or more prestigous schools. You will work hard and earn your rewards. For those few who attempt his class and make it through to the end, treasures abound.
Clear spoken, has fair grading policies, and walks through each example step-by-step, pausing for student queries as needed. I have issue with him personally for insulting me in class after (correctly) helping a classmate, because of presumptions that he made due to my otherwise complete mathematical ineptitude, but such is life.
Where to start? First of all he's extremely condescending. He favors and caters to all his precious little math majors which make up about 5% of the class. He lives and dies by PROOFS, don't know what a PROOF is? Well if you are dumb enough to take a class with him you will never forget.
He is very knowledgeable and helpful teacher. He expects students to understand the proofs which I liked this about him. He tries to make students understand the meaning of formulas rather than just memorising them. All questions in the tests are from what has been worked in the class and assigned home works. The bad thing is that his class is bori
He is a valuable person with a passion to help others. You can or may not see how sincere he is about teaching. Many of the comments about him are really not fair. He is extremely organized, responsible, and fair. Constantly working to improve his teaching. If you don't fear hard work, take him and you'll be glad in your later math courses.
Bruce Colletti is a great teacher. He keeps an potentially boring subject interesting because he has so much real world and historical knowledge. (still works for DOD) So he makes math REAL, which is so nice. He also does a lot of proofs and shows you WHERE the math came from and WHY we have it; which, for me, was very useful and unusual.
His class will be difficult if you don't spend at least 3 hours a week studying..he can be scary. I don't know any other teacher who will repeatedly tell students in class to drop his class after one bad grades. He comes off like he cares, but he doesn't!
very very bad teacher. im not saying hard im saying bad. i dont recommend him for anyone. talks about how hard it is to pass his class and instead of helping you to succeed he encourages you to drop the class.
Very condescending and not very encouraging. On the second day of class, he yelled at one student. I dropped the course after 3 weeks because it seemed like he essentially favored those who he felt were going to get better grades. His version of Statistics would be better for Engineering, students.
Excellent teacher. He holds his students to a higher standard. Be prepared to work. Good mix of theory and application. You will cover proofs extensively which sharpens you up.
his teaching is clear and understandable. He is helpful to any damb questions!!!
The best professor I have had in all my mathematics courses. For those who are crying like kids that he is hard, well, grow up and don't pursue a degree in math or any scince.
The best math professor I have encauntered. He goes beyond his duty to help students. Those who cry about him shold take basket weaven classes jajaja. Best math professor at alex.. campus
Extremely well-prepared, and thought-provoking delivery of material. The time flies by so you would be wise to invest an appropriate amount of time to this class. Do not treat it lightly. I found him to be very interested in the success of his students and went above and beyond in answering everyone's questions. A great professor.
Dr. Colletti is a great professor. Care about his students and tries to help as much as he can. That being said, se expect you to work HARD! in his class, this is not an easy A class but if you survive and pass the class you will realized that you learned a whole lot. I encourage you to take him if you are a math or science major.
Well prepared, excellent delivery and cares for students. Want a passing grade? You will be "creamed" but you will thank him later. One of the very best math professors I've come across.
Colletti doesn't pick up your below 69 paper and say "Aha! another loser!". He believes in his students who work hard. This professor cares no matter what kind of math issue you may have. He can help you formulate a general studying algorithm. After that, you will never get a math grade below B-given you keep working hard. TAKE HIM YOU WON'T REGRET
Dr. Colletti is very kind and understanding. He believes in hard work. I was always scared of math, but after his class I feel more comfortable. He does not limit himself to helping his students in math. But, he helps in any way he can. In this class, you'll be exposed to high quality of teaching. It's rare to find someone who cares like him.
Very good professor. Strict but fair. Cares a lot for his students. However if you are not intending to study then just forget about this class.
he spent the first month talking about dropping and finding something else to study.after that he had to speed up, which caused a lot of trouble to everyone in class. being physics major , he did not explain a phrase about applications of physics.really i do not recommend him.he cares too much about ti 89 and repeats exams all thge time.good luck
Excellent professor, but NOT easy (even considering the subject matter). Began classes with an open Q&A session and gave short weekly exams, good for preventing you from falling behind. Great lectures. Very approachable and helpful if you are doing the work and keeping up.
Bruce is the professor you have been wanting to have since grade school because he would have taught the math right from Day 1. Lacking that, you will be glad to have met him so soon into your mathematical education. If this is your last stop on the road, note that you will leave his classroom on firmer footing, and with knowledge that will remain with you for the rest of life. If higher levels of mathematics lie ahead, you will appreciate how Bruce skillfully ties in more abstract concepts to prepare you for that future. You cannot afford to not take his class--people like Bruce are simply not walking down the street everyday.
I had two major problems at Bruce's class. One, his negativeness kept turning me off, and doubt my capabilities. Two, his frequent change of plans caused me a lot of trouble, considering that I work full-time and have to have everything planned to the minute. Regardless, Bruce is a great guy. I think he just underestimates the power of persuasion!
never have i had a teacher like him. dr. bruce is a great guy.he taught everything about ti 89. he even helped in another matter by writing down a letter.the core subject , you will never find a teacher like him. he will be teaching statistics and i will take that class with him.finally take 174 with bruce or do not take it at all.my love bruce.
find someone else..
Bruce is the most caring teacher at alexandria. He stages everybody for the next step.please take his words seriously.you would be doing great if yoy follow his advice. He has another strong point, you will never be having a problem with ti-like calculator.i really recommend him.
Guys this is the worst professor ever ... Everything you hate about a professor its him ... Keeps class into the last minute ... Doesnt go over the material that you are suppose to know ... Is boring boring boring ... Donot I repeat donot take him
The grinch who stole Christmas? Everyone reading this knows you're out of your mind. Anyone who wants to read serious reviews of this professor, skip any that rate his clarity as a one: He's a native English speaker. This is the one professor at NVCC who has his mainpage devoted to providing links to help students who might need health insurance or financial aid, and has a separate page (his "Shared Links" page) dedicated to providing links to math resources, extensive in scope. Him "keeping" you to the last minute is only further proof that he cares: he's giving you MORE than your money's worth. If you have to go, then you don't even have to say so: be an adult and walk out the door. This is college, not grade school.
Dr. Colletti has passions for the courses he teaches. He is the most organized and knowledgeable person I have ever met. HE CARES, but if a student fails to communicate or wants an easy way out ? student shouldn?t be in his class, student shouldn?t even be at college level. Nothing worth having comes easy! One useful suggestion for students would
rest of my comments..?would be, try to prepare yourself for the materials he?ll be covering (you can find in ?lesson plan?) in class beforehand. Then his lecture and notes will make complete sense in class. I had to change learning style to go along with his lecture. I never studied materials in advanced, but recently I started ? its helping me a lot. Another thing, when he says ?if question arise, please raise your hand or email? ? please do so.
Take someone else
Sigh! I have been missing ever bit of learning that I got from Bruce and profs like him ever since I had left for a university. NOVA is such a great learning community. I have never had Bruce or any other staff at NOVA go "What you are asking is not included in the package." Something I hear at my university a lot. He will help you any way he can.
find someone else.please do believe me
Very tired.lots of talking.i did not use the book at all.i had to drop because i did not feel learning any new stuff.
LAST HE TAUGHT 271 SPR 2001,WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?BASICALLY STUDENTS TEACHING THEMSELVES.TRUST ME,STAY AWAY FROM HIM.STUDENTS R LOST EVERY SINGLE DAMN CLASS.HE MAKES MATH PROBLEMS VERY COMPLICATED.IF U ASK QUESTION MORE THAN 1 TIME,HE GETS ANGRY.HE MAKES A LOT OF MISTAKES IN THE B.BOARD,HE EXPECTS EVERYONE TOBE PERFECT IN PAPER?C'MON!JUST RUN FRM HIM
his passion give u a F, doesmn't matter how hard u work. he dont care how much u study behind the scene & strugle when he fails to teach almost every class.dont care y stydents r failing. i should went anandale.my friend got A,teacher was very-very hard, but 17 studdents out of 19 got A,professor knew how hard students tried. don?t
earning an A in bruce's class, students must have masters / at least bachelors degree. if students don't meet the criteria grade C or lower, end of story
Most talented and HELPFUL teacher in entire NOVA. Its too early to say anything about Dr. Colletti, I bet each one of who didn't say a good thing about Dr. Colletti - you'll change your mind end of the semester and recomment here. HE'S THE BEST IN THE CLASS AND OUTSIDE OF THE CLASS.
hes a great teacher, one of the best at nova. Even though i think i didn't do well in his class, i still learned a lot. He tries to help you in every possible way. I had his class from 4:30 to 7:15 and that didn't seem very long because he always made everything interesting. Take Him!!!! Hes a great teacher
i do not understand how the student befor me did all that rating, i feel that there is some kind of cheating.the teacher was tired, i do not think that he was willing to help.basically he was always tired and he excpected us to know the material before class.cheating culture.
He is the best professor I ever had in my life. He goes out of his way to help students. Any time I e-mail him he responds right away and clarifies everything. He makes you feel very comfortable to ask questions. If you want to learn something and willing to work hard here is your professor. He is the only professor who prepared me to go to a four
he'll make your entire semester miserable,no matter what math class you sign up w/ him.run before he can catch you
He is helpful, some days he seem tired(class times: 7:30pm-10:10pm)He still answered questions that were beyond the subject.I talked to him for 2 hours one day it was the best talk ever. Class is TOUGH,but you must make effort to succeed, no easy "A". Plz Ask tons of questions, he is 1 in 3.14...I am glad I took him best decision of my life.Beready
Colletti is great but really tough! No slackers in his class! The material is really hard and prof Colletti makes it very complicated, but i learned ALOT. Im glad i did :) He gives the MAX to his class and students. He will give you a four year university education.. worth every penny and definitely worth my time!
i think that to get a good idea is to go to class and find out by myself.so far, colletti spent the first lecture raeding the syllabus.in the last 2 minutes , he used the blackboard to write 3 lines. In fact , i need this class to major and i am giving him a chance , if i do not notice any change in his way, i have to postpone this class untill the
Having come from a competitive undergraduate institution, I jumped at the opportunity to take a class with this supposedly "hard" professor for fun. After 1 class, please teach something already! Your jokes are not funny. The syllabus is not interesting. Stop constantly referring to your former students. We get it, you're friends.
this guy does not write on the board .he keeps talking all the time.he suffers alot.he is telling everyone to drop the class.he speaks for 45 minutes when we start the class, after that we take a break , then more talking.i do not know how he was hired to work for all those years and no one said a word about that, please find someone else.
The professor is really top notch. Definitely will go through material but will always be willing to stop during lecture for students not grasping content. Always starts class with going over difficult problems from homework, previous lectures, and all other material. In Calculus 2, he is into proofs and expects you to prove. No surprises. Take him
don waste time n money, take some1 else.prb is he knows too much and lost himself what to teach.makes thing so much complicated and try to show what he got.
Do NOT take his class. I mostly had to study myself without his help.
To succeed in Bruce's class, always ask questions as they occur to you. Mathematics builds on prereq knowledge. If you lack previous understanding, don't trust anything a minute later to make sense. You can't predict when Life conflicts come up that make learning the material at home impossible. He always gives his best--make sure you do yours.
this guy is one of the worst teacher taught maths. He is the vision killer. inspiration is not his virtue. Avoid him at any means. whether you are good at maths or not he is not helping you to reach the next dimension.
worse professor eve. He in only interested in making the student to fail. He test you and stuff he does not teach. He is very disrespectful to students and not office hours. He favors students and white people who are veterans
A year ago, I entered Bruce's class, having learned a lot of advanced math on my own, without real guidance. So I knew things about hyperreal numbers, but didn't know how to define an even number. Bruce has transformed me into a person not only capable of the basics, but so advanced, I am now at Harvard, and have great dreams for the future. Take B
I took Colletti's 6-week intensive summer class. Yes, he is a difficult teacher, but you will learn a lot. The only complaint I have is that we spent too long on prereq's so there wasn't enough time to completely learn all of the Calculus material. To succeed in his class, you must work the Mathlab homework problems religiously. Highly recommended.
WORST TEACHER EVERRRR!! I never had problems with math, but he makes people feel stupid. He fails to understand that we need to pass class. We are not here to be tested if our IQ is over 150. Tests are extremely hard, hardest i've ever taken, and they are comprehensive.
If you are a person with future aspiriations, then you'll be grateful you had him when you are tested as if your IQ is over 200. I heard a football player (at Harvard) the other day remarking to a professor, "I wish I had focused more on learning calculus than just doing well." Keep that in mind while you try to just "pass class."
Okay, first of all if college was easy everybody would be in college. I took two graduate statistics classes from Bruce about eight years ago...and his classes are difficult! No question! If you want to earn money, you're going to be faced with difficult complex problems every day. My advice is to get used to it. Colletti is a great instructor
This class is challenging, no doubt, but it's also extremely rewarding. Colletti is more than willing to help and answer questions of students who regularly attend and do their work. If you're looking for an easy A, this isn't the class for you. If you're looking to push yourself and learn, not just earn a degree, take Colletti.
worst ever.know everything before you take his class,if not then its certain that ur gonna fail the class.he scares students and gives preference to those who r doing well and treats as a loser to those who r struggling.thin twice before u decide taking any classes with him.
he spent the first month talking about dropping and finding something else to study.after that he had to speed up, which caused a lot of trouble to everyone in class.
If you hear the word 'integrate' and quiver in your boots, don't take this class. If studying for 15 hours weekly (at least) in the math lab or at home makes you want to vomit, move on. If you take being embarrassed personally for asking a question covered in the homework you didn't do, you're in the wrong place. Other than that, great class!
He's belittling, moody, there are no posted notes so what you take in class is what you get, and you can only turn in extra credit if you're already getting an A or B.
If you really care about learning more than you care about getting a grade, Colletti is the man! just focus on studying and learning, show interest, and the grades will follow. This professor is the best professor at NOVA, and the best I've had in my entire life.He goes above and beyond, and makes the course so interesting, Go Colletti!
He'll stay after class and take questions forever, not a bad guy. But a truly harsh class. Only brilliance and true mastery of the priors will help, and who has that? Insane work for my C, now retaking class for an A while forgetting the hardest stuff. Learned a lot, but can't meet standards. We are hurled against and mostly wrecked. (Summer 2011)
This guy is very frustrating. He teaches this class as if it's a graduate course. He starts the semester with too high an expectation for his students and because of his background in math he has a hard time bringing the material down to the students level to understand. Avoid his class if you don't want to be frustrated the entire semester.
NVCC has other professors much better equipped (in many ways) to teach Calculus II. You should take Coletti's own advice and not take his course. Brags about being "grievance proof." Also, he is over-controlling and over-sensitive, which manifests itself in his moodiness. In short, fear the reaper for he will suck the joy of math out of you.
Mr. Colletti is amazing! He gave me such an eye-opener on what Math is really about. His class is difficult if the homework is not consistent. Really approachable and kind when help is needed. Ask questions! he has high expectations for his students b/c he wants a challenger. Be there and you won't regret learning about what math is really about.
This class is not for lazy students. Learn your Ti-89, do HW as assigned, participate in group study, make exam cheat sheets, submit student exam questions and you'll be fine. Professor Colletti tells you that the prereqs and hanging mass are on every exam. KNOW THEM. If you don't understand a concept ask!
I'm calling it. These ratings are being manipulated. Note the similarity in style in the instances of positive reviews. Also, note when they appeared--just before the beginning of the semester. Folks, most people fail this class. Most people who take it want to use math not memorize proofs. Also, the final has no resemblance to the joke posted.
He is the worst professor i ever seen in my life don't wast ur time or energy. The matrial is already hard and he make it more difficult than what it is. He doesn't follow the text book at all. He has his own handout.please don't take with him at all. he will tarfy you day and night that he will fall you. please make your favour and don't take him
Bruce is a *great* professor. His teaching is clear, concise, and incredibly interesting (I've never laughed so much in class). Bruce sets high expectations for his students which inspires us to work hard to achieve these expectations. I highly recommend taking class with Bruce; he will give you all of the tools you need for success.
I never had problems with math, but he makes me so hard. Exam was really hard and a lot questions also he never understand students problem. Even one hour late assignment he doesn't want to accept. My major is not math but he always gives hard time so whole semester I spend a lot time for math but i got bad result.
This class is hard, but Bruce makes it very interesting, and funny. He grades fairly, and explains how calculus in general is used in the real world. Do not expect to slack in this class. Plan on spending at least 15 hours a week doing homework to garner an understanding of the concepts of this class. 20+ started this class, 13 took the final.
Great Professor, knows what he is teaching. He teaches really well but his teaching style is above most students level of understanding. If you are a math major, Professor Colletti is for you. If you are not a math major and are taking math as a requirement, I would say think twice.
1 of 2 classes I had with Prof Colletti this semester. This was my first exposure to Abstract Algebra. He was a very thorough and patient teacher. The homework and readings covered all tested material. If you listened carefully, and examined all of the study aids/comments on the course website, there were no surprises. Good prof, good course!
2 of 2 courses I took with Prof Colletti this semester. Good mix of theory/apps. Not plug and chug. This course will push you. Thorough understanding of all homework is not optional. The tests are intense. Everything was in notes or on website. Time is your enemy here. Stay ahead. Use BlackBoard. Ask questions. Not for casual students!
Perfect example of why so many people hate and fear math. Expected attendance at "live" lecture which was… a scan of his notes as the visual; he read those notes as lecture. No interaction with students. Was condescending to those who asked questions. Held class during spring break and when college closed for weather.
I think the "Hotness" rating should be optional as I find it an utterly ridiculous and irrelevant, even offensive question. Professor Colletti is probably the most diverse Mathematics professor I have ever had. Expect to learn history as well as delve profoundly into course material. Very challenging. Equally rewarding.
Great teacher. He has obviously taught for many years, and has learned from his mistakes to create a course that is essentially seamless in its administration. Crystal clear thought process is ESSENTIAL to a good math teacher, and he's got it.
Very good instructor but very hard. He is different from any other teachers. He really cares about students and wish students to learn. He doesn't really care about tests. As long as you tried and show your interest in his class, he wil give you a reasonable grade. If you only care about grade, don't take with him. It won't be easy.
Ex-Airforce brass with a chip on his shoulder. Being prior-service, thought it would be a good idea, the guy knows calculus intimately. I found him disrespectful, scattered in his expectations for comprehension, and more interested in those taking as a refresher or who have been in the field than those trying to grasp. At least 75% failed/retook.
Professor Colletti is a great teacher. While math will never be my strong suit he opened my eyes to its application in life. His interest and respect for his profession leads to a class that is challenging but at the same time rewarding. I worked hard for my grade but in the process learned the material thoroughly. His class is hard but worth it
This guy is brutal. You need to do the homework and be disciplined with your time the entire semester. This class is not for those trying to coast. I've never had someone make me work so hard at something before. Thanks Dr. Colletti.
Not a professor I would advise to be taken. He is extremely difficult to learn from. I love math and consider it to be one of my stronger subjects, but I left class second guessing myself and abilities. I even took tutoring from the tutoring center. The exams are passable with putting in 9+ hrswk. Don't miss a class either. It will not help.
WORTH Every Penny (from a grumpy scrooge Economist wannabe)
Just flat out excellent. I had him several years ago. Saw he left NVCC but not sure where he went to. Dr. Colletti, if you happen to read this note, please know that you made a big impact on someone's life.
