Tries to explain but isn't that clear. Helpful if you ask.
Great teacher, very helpful, great class

Very nice guy, will help you with any question you have. Does get a bit confusing.
Passionate about his class, but it is very hard to understand. Quizzes are difficult
The class gets harder later in the semester. Tries to be helpful but can be a bit confusing sometimes. Quizzes are harder than the exams. Beware of minor things popping up in your quizzes that he has not yet taught. Best of Luck if u r stuck with him!
This teacher is terrible and quite arrogant. I would advise anyone to not take this teacher and if you have him currently, drop the class as soon as possible.
This class was awful, and the teacher constantly referred to himself in the 3rd person. Dutra does this, dutra does that. Dont take his class its mind numbingly stupid and will put you to sleep

well.. let's just say if my dog was alive I wouldn't even put him in Dutra's class

Bruce you need to do a much better job of teaching!!!

great teacher, goes over things nice and slow so you understand them. many people will hate the class and blame it on the prof, but thats normal. IMO an easy class...ive never had to study/do homework for more than 30min a week
Class was pretty easy. He didn't assign much homework. If you write your papers according to the notes taken in class you shouldn't have a problem. Class was a little unclear, but remember it IS philosophy!!!
This was my favorite class at Mott. Great subject. I'm not sure why Dutra got such a low rating. He tells you exactly what's on the tests. If you know the material and can explain it in paragraphs you'll do ok
"great teacher, goes over things nice and slow so you understand them."-- Yeah, if you're a retard. People who go into the class expecting to LEARN THINGS get the shaft! He repreats himself about fifteen times. When you get to something new you'
Horrible class. I cant believe he has such a high rating, was I in a different class then you people. He was so condesending!!
I think dutra checkes and rates himself, because this teacher is'nt very good. He lacks expierence.
I had a hard time understanding, what was discussed in class. Did not take the time to help me when I needed it.
I did not like this class at all.
WOW, I think my brain is fried. What is this Dutra does this and that.
Dultra has a pride issue. And that is not good for a Philosophy teacher. I met with him several times after class for extra help, memorized all he told me, and he still gave me a mediocre grade. TAKE SPADEMAN (SPADEMAN FOR PRES)
WOW I THINK I DIDN'T LEARN A THING IN THIS CLASS. IN PHILOSOPHY A BAD TEACHER TEACHES GOOD STUDENT DOES NOT LEARN.
I don't know what to say?? Except don't take his class!!!
Dutra is one of my favorite professors and this was definitely the best class I've taken at Mott. If you're motivated and interested in philosophy you won't have a problem. It was a challenge to an extent, but I got a 4.0. (***I have a feeling the same pe
You people are crazy, Dutra is easy. He was always willing to answer questions and did several eaxmples. I would take him again.
He's a really nice guy. It's a philosophy class so I wouldn't call the material easy. He does a good job at explaining things. His test and quizzes aren't the easiest. This is the second time I take Dutra and I think he's pretty nice.
Ive taken Dutra for Philosophy of Religion, Logic, and Intro. He is a great teacher. He explained things at my pace and made the class as a whole very intresting. He is the reason I am going on to get my degree in Philosophy.
Put a little effort in the class and you'll get what is owed!!!!
He's a great professor. I've taken two of his classes. He's very clear with grading as well as his expectations. He's always in a great mood, and he's always willing to slow down so everyone understands. I would take him a third time.
I got a 3.0 and didnt go half the time. I think he is a great prof...
Faulty grading policy, competent teaching.
He has a very tough grading policy. Had to write a paper which he said was a really good rough draft and gave only a few things I could improve on. Made the improvements and only got an 84 on paper. It should have been 95-100. Don't take him.
He does a really awesome job with explaining concepts if you can ask the right question.
Was not a good teacher
Very nice guy, great at explaining concepts, Take home exams, but VERY HARD grader....he knows what he's looking for and your exams better have every detail or points are taken off.
The worst teacher I have ever had, He doen't explain anything, very judgemental, a total athiest, A total waste of 15 weeks. TOTALLY STAY AWAY IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ANYTHING
the class seemed like it would be a good class. Notes were given every day but yet when you studied off the notes HE GAVE, you FAILED the papers and exams! How do you learn when you can't study off notes the TEACHER GIVES and you can't pick anything out of a book because its all your opinions to beg
if you follow the order he goes over the arguments, you will do fine. i didnt take any notes, but i payed attition in class and a ran close to a 3.5
He is not clear at all and his teaching style sucks. He does not summarize what he is lecturing on and it is so confusing.
He is very energetic and does his best to make a complicated class easy to understand. He trys hard to create class participation and is very easy to understand.
Very enthusiastic teacher; breaks out a sweat! Shows no bias toward any religious view. He encourages class discussion, but you can just sit and listen if you want. The class was slow-moving because he breaks down very simple concepts. I only needed to take light notes in his class.
I did not like this Class, He did a very poor job of teaching the Material. I would not take this class
Smart guy, but rather confusing. Unclear in explanations and HARD grader. Try taking someone else.
hard but good
He is not clear on anything, he go off the subject all the time and has a very hard grading system.
It takes more than mere knowledge to be a teacher- you should not only have an enthusiasm for the subjects in which you teach, but for people actually LEARNING that knowledge from you. He doesnt allow for debate on our opinions, he doesnt try to use current knowlege as a basis for philosophy.
Dr Dutra is a very smart professor. He is a hard grader, but he is very fair. If you take his class, you will do best to attend every class and participate in his lectures.Take good notes about what he says.Overall,he is very clear and helpful if you ask.
Pay attention to lectures. Read the material. Don't miss class. He'll look at papers and let you know if you're on the right track before they are due. He'll discuss material after class if it isn't clear. I didn't know his religious status until he told us after the final. He teaches the major arguements impartially. LOGIC and Grammar count!
Good teacher really likes his job. This class was kind of hard, the book reads like VCR instructions, but Professor Dutra will help you. I was probably the most confused in this class but Dutra helped me alot.(JUST ASK) and I passed with a good grade.. Thanks Professor Dutra

Logic was hard for me. I think he explained things very clearly. Also, he was very helpful to me. If you absolutely have to take logic, take it with him.
This was a very hard class but that's philosphy for you. Bruce was however one of the best teachers I have ever had. He really likes what he does and he was there to help anyone that was not comprehending the class. I really enjoyed the class and the teacher but it was a struggle as a whole for all.
weird guy but a fun class and a wealth of information, makes you think and explain, not merely regurgitate information from the book and lectures.
Philosophy of religion was a great course, Prfessor Bruce did a fine job, some found the class to be hard, but those individuals probably find walking and talking at the same time hard. awesome class if you actually want to think and have no religious bias
He is prepared, but for what class? I have no idea.
I did not like this class at all. He was one of those kinds of teachers where if you don't get the answer he got and how he got it, it's wrong. This class is EXTREMELY hard. I don't know anyone that did decent in it.
he a good teacher
I did not like this class at all. I did not find Dr. Dutra to be very helpful. He is one of those teachers that prides himself on not giving A's.
Dr. Dutra I thought was a really good and helpful teacher. This class was difficult, but if you take good notes, pay attention, and study you should easily get a good grade. I got a 4.0, so he does give them out. I am not the type of person that gets a 4. without trying, I work for what I get. If you are like me you will need to study.
Dutra is very passionate & knowledgeable about the subject he teaches. Philosophy bored me, but it was nice to have a teacher so involved in his subject. He gestures & moves constantly when he gets into discussions. He had surgery this past summer and misses class every now and then, but he didn't make us do more work to catch up. Liked him a lot.
Dr. Dutra is basically the man. His class is very interesting and he is always willing to answer even to most wild questions. He is always extremely helpful and he is always available in his office at even the most obscure hours. He is a great prof and I really enjoy his class. Go into his class with an open mind you will have a great semeser!
Not extremelly clear during lectures, argues both sides of a topic to himself. Tough grader on essays, knows all of his stuff and is helpful if approached outside of class. Make sure you stay on top of your readings and understand everything or you will fail miserably.
Professor Dutra knows philosophy and is an excellent teacher. He's tough, and has high expectations for essays, but quizzes were graded on a curve and he gave plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
Difficult at times when you disagree with topics. Very anal about detail. Must work hard to get a decent grade.
I don't know why Dutra gets such a harsh rep. I wasn't really interested in the subject matter, never paid attention, never did the readings and got a 3.5. If you're not willing to think outside the box I don't think you'll do very well on the exams. They count for 90% of the points.
I thought his class was really easy--he repeated himself a lot, so I was able to daydream through most of the class. It wasn't that interesting, but I thought it was an easy A.
Do not take the class. His quizzes do not make sense. He doesn't make sense. He has to grade on a curve because not very many students understand the subject.
Professor Dutra forgets that he knows HE knows what he's talking about and the students don't. He loves to hear himself talk, is a very-very nice guy, but a very boring teacher. His quizzes are confusing and his take home quizzes are extremely hard. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you WILL NOT be able to pass if you skip.
Dr. Dutra is a helpful (and funny) guy and really knows the topic. Go to class, pay close attention, and he will open up the world of philosophy to you. If you love learning, you will love this professor.
THE worst teacher i've ever had, he talks to the floor and not the students, students are rarley if ever given the chance to ask questions, quizzes and take home exams are extremley hard and confusing. In my opinion not a "teacher" because he seems to like seeing his "students" fail.
Best class at Mott hands down. A rare opportunity for students to study extremely provocative material with an intelligent, dynamic professor. Some Mott students will do poor in his class, but this is due to their failings, not Dutra's. His standards are high, but attainable if you take notes and have an average level of intelligence.
This class is confusing. He babbles all the time, and when you ask a question he dont get to the point of the question you asked. His quizes are confusing and the take home exams are hard also.
FOR PROF STATUS: SHOULD BE RETIRED/GONE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY REMAINS AT THE SCHOOL. DROP THIS CLASS.
If you're not interested in philosophy you may not do well. Phil of religion was a little annoying with people asking irrelevant questions that took too much time away from material. Quizzes are tricky, but curved and you get to drop 2 of 8. I am taking another of Dutra's classes in the summer! Textbook helps, but not necessary if you take notes.
Grades very easy, lots of opportunity to get extra credit. Bruce is also very enthusiastic about the subject to. If you have the opportunity, take this class to cover your algebra credit.
I love this class...my favorite ever. Mr. Dutra explains everything well and has a great zest for the subject. Anyone who doesn't like him just doesn't understand.
My favorite class I have taken so far. Dutra is very enthusiastic about teaching. He is eager for his students to ask questions. Very easy to listen to. Quizes every week but are not hard. Will anwer all students questions and doesnt make you feel stupid if you are wrong. I would recommend this class to anyone who has an interest in religon.
Mr. Dutra was an excellent teacher. He was very into what he was teaching and while the material is sometimes hard to grasp he helped put things into clear perspective. Make sure you attend all classes take good notes and this class is a breeze
I am still in the class my semester hasnt ended but I find him very helpful and it's an enjoyable class to take, he is easy to understand and if you don't understand something he explains it in a way so that you will.
Oh my god take somebody else. Anybody else.
I DID say attendance is mandatory, although you will probably learn just as much about Phil. of Religion by banging your head against a porcupine's backside. THE most boring and difficult to understand class of my entire student career.I absolutely HATE going to his class.
This is the best philosophy teacher I have ever had. He is crystal clear when explaining concepts and does it it multiple ways so everyone can understand. He was almost always available after class or via email. He does grade hard but gives you all the information he wants to be put into the tests 2/3 are take home. Attendance does not affect grade
You'll either love the class or hate it. He makes extremely deep, difficult to understand reading very clear. He keeps it interesting too--constantly engaging the class, and not just lecturing. Quizzes and tests were both based on what was discussed in class, so if you miss even one class you will be at a disadvantage.
This is a hard class but Dutra tries to make it easier to understand. Quizzes and Tests are a nightmare but he usually grades on a pretty big curve.
very knowledgeable relating to philosophy. very thorough and clear pertaining to in-depth concepts of reasoning
He's not the worse prof I've had. He makes the readings in the book as clear as he possibly can, and the quizzes are graded on a curve. 90% of the class are take-home exams, and be prepared to spend all weekend doing them. U have to get a 93% or higher to get a 4.0 here, and you will work for it. Don't think too hard and doubt yourself on the quiz
I already enjoyed philosophy and he really helped expand those feelings.
I thought that taking philosophy would be kind of exciting and interesting.. but it was not like that at all with dutra. All he did was LECTURE, he did not make it interesting at all. Our grades were based off 3 essay exams. This class was horrible, made me not ever want to take a philosophy course ever again.
Class is hard. Book is basically unnecessary. Quizzes are graded on a lenient curve. 2 EXAMS WITH 3 ESSAY'S! MUST STUDY A LOT. He gives exam q's as study guide day before exam, but it has 5 q's & he randomly picks only 3 for exam so u will do some unnecessary studying. If u don't need this class don't take it unless u already understand Phil. WELL.
Very hard class with Dutra. Grades only consist of a few quizzes and two exams. Quizzes at ten multiple choice Qs and exams you can pick 3 out of 5 essays to write about. No PowerPoint lectures, he just talks the whole time. Better take hardcore notes
Overall good teacher. Makes class interesting. Philosophy is a bit difficult to read but he grades on a curve which helps significantly.
Very friendly and answers all questions! Does his best to make the harder and confusing things as clear as he can. Its really interesting stuff! The text is a bit difficult to follow but he to break it down for you! Tests are hard but he gives you it in advance to prepare answers at home! Write down everything he does and ask Q's and youll be fine!
Show up every day, listen, and ask questions if you have questions about concepts, and you will do well.
His ethics class was very interesting. He explains things in a nice, objective, and very clear manner. Open to and very good at answering questions. Sometimes long-winded in explaining things but it's for clarity's sake. Quizzes/Exams aren't too bad, just study. Book not REALLY necessary. Recommended for new-to-philosophy people
Dr. Dutra is a great professor! He is very smart, and his class is somewhat challenging but the lectures and the reading material are extremely interesting. He is very helpful and works with you if you meet with him and ask for help!! Best class and best professor I've had so far at Mott.
His lectures are really comprehensive. You have to attend class but as long as you do you'll be totally fine. He's really good at answering questions and will let you redo homework if you ask a question about it after getting it wrong.
