This teacher emphasizes writing more than Geography study. His grading is upper division level. He is approachable even during office hours, you better have some tough skin when you enter his classroom. Also, he lives in Sac. and doesn't like the Kings.
he definitely knows what hes talking about, but has no clue on how to teach it. his lectures are all over the place, and gets annoyed when asked to clarify something or go back over something which he didnt go over, but felt he did. to study guides for exams, and exmas were very complicated. exams covered too much scattered information. basically,
Lectures are scattered and packed with tidbits of information. Lengthy essay tests on class and text material. Expects perfection on lengthy and complicated research paper assignment but packs you full of non-cited and out-dated info. during lectures. To be positive, this class blends history and geography, which is delightful.
He's a goofy guy, fun lecturer, and very intelligent. The content of the classes is very interesting but he comes acorss as a little scatterbrained at times. He's always more than willing to help you but sometimes he gets overly excited.Overall, he's a great professor.Take his classes and you won't be disappointed.
Interesting lectures make going to class easy, which is a must to succeed. Fun, aproachable professor. Lengthy exams but easy to well if you took decent notes.
the only thing about him is......he is soooooo HOT...
This guy looks exactly like Buster from Arrested Development
He's not a bad prof...just not always clear on what he says, goes of on tangents at times into topics then stops himself becuse he says he doesn't know much about whatever it was he was going off on. So it kinda gets confusing, but the class is interesting.
Dr. Gervais is very intelligent and knowlegable in the topics he teaches. His classes arent very easy, but you are guaranteed to learn a LOT of valuable info.
Enthusiastic and good-humored instructor who structures his lectures so that good note-taking, participation and attendance will ensure a good grade. Serious students will thoroughly enjoy his classes.
Bruce is one of the funniest/strangest teachers at Slack State. He was VERY sarcastic and always had a joke to crack BUT he had some of the toughest geography tests west of the Mississippi. He doesn't use any multiple choice tests so his exams are all short essay type questions. It was frustrating taking his tests and getting the grades back.
Funny and knows the material, but all over the place. Hard class.
This class was easy. Tests are short answer & essay. But he gives u a study guide before that tells EXACTLY what will be on the exam. And draw pictures! I didn't take him seriously when he first said to draw pics on tests but do it! Every time I did this I seemed to get a better grade for that test question!
Very good teacher. Makes the class fun with his silly sense of humor. He has 3 essay still test which is not room to make much error. Come to class and study lecture and you'll do well.
I took geog 1 with another teacher and did not pass, however with gervais i was able to grasp the material better. I don't think his class is hard if you come to class and study your notes, he's a nice guy and can get you interested in the subject.
Words cannot describe how bad of a teacher Gervais is. He's all over the place, difficult to follow, doesn't know how to write tests which makes them difficult, seems like he hates the subject...the list goes on and on. He makes you write a research paper and do a presentation. Bad teachers like this shouldn't expect so much out of their students.
i took both geo 1 and the lab with this professor, i think he's doing great, geography is pretty much self explanatory if you take the time out to read...so he does as much as he can. STUDY STUDY STUDY! its easy to get an A, show up to class, do the work. simple!
He should be fired. He goes out of his way to make his class impossible. His tests are worded in such a way that you have no idea what he expects. The paper was a joke--he was incredibly vague and graded everyone very harshly. I think he gets joy out of failing people. The majority of the class failed the first test and he did nothing about it.
People Hating on Gervais! Dude is a great teacher and his tests are tough but since when did college have to be easy. Quit whining. SacState is lucky to have Dr. Gervais!
I guess that makes me a hater too. Avoid Gervais. You'll regret taking his classes when tests come around. His tests are ridiculously hard because he tests you on random, useless pieces of information rather than the important material. He'll confuse you with his crappy lecture style too. Sac State shouldn't allow teachers like this to teach.
Sounds like there are some lazy students out there...Take Gervais, he is a great teacher. I've had him for three classes now and have received A's in all of them. Go to class, take good notes, draw the pictures, and go through the study guide and you will be fine. He is a little quirky but knows his stuff. You can learn a lot from him.
I really liked this guy and his class. It was very humorous and light hearted which made absorbing a ton of info much easier. As times he can be a bit spacy, but I think that comes with a 'wirey' personality. I definatly recommend him and you probably don't need to use the book unless you miss class.
He is very entertaining, and teaches lots of interesting topics. I think he is hilarious. I really enjoyed the class but ended up earning myself a D+. I usually get all A's and B's in other classes. The tests were just too hard. And I did NOT like writing that big paper!
My favorite teacher so far at CSUS! Very knowledgable, funny, and keeps class interested. Take good notes, study hard, don't miss class, and you'll do fine. Tests are challenging, but you learn alot. If you don't understand, go see him during office hours, he's very helpful. The textbook is confusing, but he tells you everything you need to know.
He provides online textbook so you'll save money- I barely used it. Exams consist of T/F, multiple choice, short answers, and 2 essays. Exams are straight fwd- straight from lecture and study guides, so study them. His humor makes class entertaining!
He is very entertaining. Extremely intelligent and knowledgeable about the sciences. I absolutely loved this class but was bummed that I received a C+. I was told he is known to be the hardest grader in the dept. but the info you learn is so worth it. I have a new appreciation for biogeog after this class. Excellent teacher for science majors.
I took Gervais for during the summer which was the biggest mistake ever because he didn't help a lot of people and half of the class practically failed! You would think he's hot if your into receding hair lines in men...
I will say he is passionate about teaching, but I have to say, though I did very well in his classes, I would avoid him. The problem lies in his tests and his term paper. He is vague about what he wants and HOW he wants it written. I gotta C on his recent paper, and I NEVER get C's on papers...and his reasoning made no sense to me....
Main thing: take goood notes! Interesting personality, keeps class in tune. Tests are mainly based on lecture & movie notes & sometimes...online articles. 3-exams, all multiple choice, t-f questions.
I wouldn't take him honestly. There's too much there. He is too vague and fails to understand the student's concerns and is unwilling to be open to the students who need help. If you attend the class all the time, then you will get an easy C-. But avoid him, too vague, too hard as a result and not open enough to be the teacher students need.
Gervais is a nice guy but dont let that fool you. He could desperately benefit from making powerpoints, which would add structure to his lectures. Tests are difficult because he over simplifies his lectures, then gives very technical tests.
This class helped me a lot. It was realistic. It was hard to understand sometimes and we had no book so dont miss any days and take good notes. I missed 3 days and got a B. The term paper was graded on what you learned and barely affected by your grammar and english errors.
LOVED his class. It was interesting and easy! Plus cheap, no text book at all! He is a goofy guy, and makes class fun. Four tests and that is your grade. Study your notes and you will pass for sure.
So glad i took this class! You dont have to buy a book! HE is a funny guy and teaches the class in a very interesting way! As long as you go to class everyday, and study 2 days before the exam for 5 hours you are set with a good grade! I never thought I would every be interesed int his kind of stuff but I was, because of him! Also, interesting movies
If you aren?t naturally good with maps and graphs, take another lab class. It was difficult. In order to do well, attendance is a must. Once the topic is covered on a lab, it is not revisited in the future. Prof. Gervais is willing to answer all questions. There are 3 tests, but studying for them is hard because it?s based on the labs.
This professor is very funny and makes class very enjoyable. Teaches very clear and makes sure you understand it. Shows a lot of interesting videos. Tests are not bad, especially if you attend class and do study guide. Overall very good and easy class.
Makes the class fun and the learning experience enjoyable...won't hand it to you though, so if you don't like to do the work don't take him because you have to earn the grade!
I love this guy. He seriously cracks me up. His classes are extremely interesting too and he gives you a ton of great info. He acts like hes going off on tangents sometimes, don't let that fool you or catch you off guard because its probably on the test. There is little to no homework just PAY ATTENTION and study and its easy.
awesome professor! made up of 4 exams which is nice. he does curve the tests, but not by much. He is very enthusiastic about the subject and makes it fun. definitely recommend him! not text book necessary just pay attention to lecture.
I am in his geography class now. I think he is a great teacher. He makes class very interesting and fun. Points only come from tests so you have to do well on those to do well in the class. No need for book, all tests based off his lectures so attendance is mandatory. I'm pretty sure I'm about to receive a B. His tests can be a bit tricky.
DO NOT buy the book! You do not need it! attendance is mandatory and make sure you take great notes. His tests are 100% from notes and ALWAYS goes over the study guide. Take him!
You don't need the book. He is funny and keeps things interesting but don't take this class if you're not In the major he expects a lot of vocab and prior knowledge. The tests have a Lot of trick questions and he gets super defensive and mean if you question him you have to show up and take really hood notes to pass
First, DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. you will not need it, as long as you attend every lecture or at least get the notes you should easily get an A or B on each test. He is super witty and actually made it enjoyable for me to learn about geography. My favorite professor this semester!
He is a power point professor, keeps the class interesting with jokes. Do not buy book we never used, the only time you would be using the book is if you want more information on what you learned. If he sees a large amount of people not showing up he will take role. Overall great professor. Study and you can easily get a B or higher.
He's an alright professor. The class is straightforward, but it seems like he doesn't like helping students unless they're in the major. That's just my experience. 4 exams (MC+T/F) and one 5-page paper.
Gervais is very likeable and funny. He is entertaining but don't let that make you think he is easy. You absolutely have to go to class or you will do poorly. His tests have information that you would only know if you were in class. I've never failed a college course, I have a high gpa, and I might get a D in this class, haven't found out yet.
Dr. Gervais is so smart! He is passionate, interesting and cares about his students. Of course you have to be willing to do the work..he will not give you a good grade if you haven't put in the effort..its geography though, not rocket science.. just pay attention and ask questions if you don't understand and you will do fine.
4 exams, 5 quizzes, 2 earth science logs. It's easy to pass his class without reading the book. Just make sure to attend the lectures. The book isn't necessary, but I recommend you buy it. It's useful for the quizzes. All the exams are weighted the same. Don't be late for class. He's finicky about late students, and points them out in class.
Gervais is awesome. Hilarious as well. There was not a class where I did not laugh. Do not let his easy going nature fool you however. He is not going to give you an A unless you study hard. Tests are pretty much the most important things. There is a study guide and I recommend that you learn all of it and then some. Awesome/10.
Gervais is so funny! Every once in a while he pulls an amusing and witty joke that cracks the class up. Most of the questions from the exams come directly from his lectures. As long as you take good notes and study, you should do fine. It's hard to get an A in this class (unless you're already good at science), but it's easy to get a B or a C.
Wonderful guy. Really tough class. He does not post his lecture notes anywhere, so you need to come to class. Always. Sometimes it sounds like he's just riffing or having side conversation but he is teaching the class, and that information shows up on tests. Follow his essay criteria TO THE LETTER or you will get a mediocre grade. Funny dude.
Really like this guy as a person, but not much as a teacher. He isn't very clear with what he would like to see on exams. His study guides have little to do with what he is going to ask on the tests. I attended every class and studied like a madman for his tests and got a low grade in the class. Record his lectures if you can. 3 tests. Essay.
The class was alright, four tests and one essay. The tests can be a little tricky since he is disorganized, so make sure to study. I had a high interest in the subject and was a little let down by the class. I felt like he was somewhat disorganized and could have better prepared his lectures.
Gervais is funny, no doubt about it. Except, do not let that fool you into thinking his class is easy. It was rather difficult, especially for someone who does not have an affinity for science. You definitely needed to take solid notes, and study them. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. He tells you to buy it in the beginning of the semester, but do not listen.
Funny &makes class enjoyable. IDK why almost everyone says his classes are hard. Not really, first time I took his class I got a B+. Years later I had to take another science class so I decided to take another class with him, ended up with an A. Just be sure to go to class, take notes, and DO THE STUDY GUIDES! 98% of test comes from them.
Professor Gervais is super intelligent! Make sure to not text and talk in class. He have good hearings and will put you on the spot. All exam materials are covered in the lectures. Class is composed of two easy logs and three exams and one final. Not bad at all. Really enjoyable. His sarcasms are very funny. Overall, a GREAT professor! Take him!
I was undeclared before, but after taking this class I changed my major to Geog. He's a great professor. He explains confusing concepts very well and never fails to make a class interesting. He wrote the textbook n it rly helped me through the semester. Tests are T/F and Multiple choice. They are pretty hard, so make sure you know your stuff.
I would't recommend Gervais. I am not good at science and his lectures did not help me learn the material. You have to know the material/basis beforehand. He DOES NOT DO EXTENSIONS no matter what... You miss an assignment, you lose the points. Attendance is checked randomly. No extra credit. HYBRID course- sporadic online quizzes-Don't miss any!
Honestly, do not buy the book. Just buy the online access code cause you can access the book there. It was a waste of money. Also, make sure you really know your stuff and go to class. Some of the tests had material that were discussed in class and random information. Take good notes and really study. Good luck, and do not miss due dates.
I am not a Geo major and find the concepts are hard for me to get right off if I do at all. Always mentions he is available for help outside of class. His tests are not based on direct facts His questions are concept based not word for word lecture based. know the how, why and where of bigger picture. Interesting class even though I am not good.
This class was of course taken for general ed but that doesn't mean it wasn't interesting. He's a funny guy in an awkward way and he is very clear in his lectures. Tests are multiple choice and easy to study for. I'd highly recommend him if you are trying to met physical science requirement or want to take geography
Highly recommend recording his lecture so you can go back to it in the future. His exams aren't always clear just because his power points aren't necessarily very structured. Don't come late, he'll make a comment verbally or he'll give you a look when you're late. Even 10 minutes. Do NOT recommend. Avoid this professor. Doesn't give you any liency
Go to class and study and you will get a good grade. He's very funny in an "awkward science guy" type way and he really cares about the grade you get. He can be tough but he's lenient when you have questions. His grading system is weird since you can't see it but he will let you know if you ask. Take notes and use the online text when doing quizzes
Nice guy, funny. But course was too hard for a GE course. You need to go to class cause you will be tested on stuff from lecture. Exams are not surface level info they are hard. He lacks organization. Not a terrible teacher just make sure you pay attention, he does make you buy his really expensive textbook though
Long lectures and mandatory attendance. There are only 4 non-cumulative exams and 2 papers total. (No final) The two papers are easy summaries, but the exams are brutal. He expects you to memorize things word-per-word. He downplays in lectures to make everything seem a lot simpler than it is then tests in great detail based on the online textbook.
Unless you are a GEO major do not take this class. This prof is mediocre at best. It is lecture heavy so take good notes, but good luck on tests. The questions and material are ambiguous so literally remember everything he says. He often negates the book which is any meteorolog book written in the last 5 years. If he asks what your major is say geo
This guy intentionally throws trick questions on exams. If he's against your opinion on written papers, guess what, your not getting a good grade. His study guides have little to do with exam questions. He tries to be wordy and use complex words to confuse you on lectures & exams. avoid him, unless you want a prof that tries tricking you on purpose
By far my favorite professor. Subject matter of this course really makes you think, but also they way he goes about teaching. He makes you open your mind to things that you might not otherwise. Tests are tricky, multiple choice, but tricky verbage. Study guides are long. Just read your notes. Write down every word he says.
Prof. Gervais is one of the best professors I have taken! He is funny and makes the material interesting to learn. Overall, the class is simple: 4 tests, 8 or so online quizzes, and 2 one-page writing assignments. The tests are the most difficult--but once you learn his style, you'll do fine. His class is fairly challenging for a GE course.
Very interesting lectures and he's funny, but the hardest class I've ever taken. Four exams, one mandatory field trip, and a term paper is all he grades off of. His examples are sometimes unclear and the study guides don't match up with the exams well. Give yourself at least a full week to study for his tests.
Professor Gervais is the most sassiest professor I've had so far, and I mean it in a good way. He's very funny and weird. Coursework is straightforward, just online quizzes with a week's worth of time to get done. Lectures are thorough and he provides great visuals. Tests are quite difficult, so if you aren't good at GEOG, study before tests!!!
So so. Fun guy, but really inconsistent and moody. Grading based on attendance, four exams and a report. Write down every word he says because a lot of random trivia shows up on exams. Class had to hand back every exam for regrading because of all the errors. Wouldn't recommend.
He's a funny guy, though I would argue his first impression isn't the best (but I myself have the same problem). Very knowledgeable about the subject, though I feel his lectures are sometimes a little jumpy. The quizzes and tests are somewhat tough as some questions are somewhat unexpected. You do need to read on your own though.
Gervais was by far my fav professor. He's hilarious and makes lectures fun. He's super informative and knowledgeable. Weekly quizzes on Launchpad. Exams are based on quizzes and lecture. He will tell you what will/will not be on exam. Lectures a thorough and kinda fast-paced, only 3 writing assignments and super simple. Take him!
He was an ok professor, his lectures are extremely scattered around. Tests are extremely heavy, I studied and only missed one class session and never got above a C- on a test. Tests do not match the study materials at all. They are veryyyy specific so study details well. Overall nice guy but if you have trouble with tests I wouldn't recommend
Professor is great at lecturing. He make sure students understanding everything he is talking about. two 1 page papers, one hw quiz for every chapter and test every 3 chapter with a non-cumulative final. put some effort into this class, you will earn the grade you want. it is a pretty easy lower division course. Funny, informative and fun.
Mr. Gervias is a very nice and sociable person. He wants you to do well in his classes. He jokes are hilarious and he makes the class fun. Though his tests are poorly written and can be loaded with trivia type questioning so be ready to know the details. Other than that he is a good teacher.
I definitely knew what we were learning. He makes sure you know the material before moving on. He also makes sure you know what is expected on the exams by doing review the class before and even sending out a study guide!
Professor Gervais is literally one of the best professor. His lectures are great and so interesting. I had so much fun and he's really funny. I actually learned a lot in this class. Honestly, quizzes & exams are SUPER easy if you just pay attention and study. He's amazing and you're lucky if you get him! The book is online and super helpful!
Show up, take DETAILED notes, and ask questions. this is your key to a B unless you already know a lot about Geography. tries hard to be funny which is a hit or miss. 4 tests and 1 1500 word paper(graded harshly). take another class if you're like me and just needed an upper-division GE.
The quizzes are based off the readings but the exams are based off the lectures. He allows you to skip 5 classes without penalty. I personally don't like science and his class was really boring. He tries to make jokes that just aren't funny. He's an okay professor but I don't see myself taking him again.
Stay away from this class if you are doing it for a GE! Worst. Teacher. Ever. Quizzes and Exams, 1 paper! Tough grader! Insanely tricky questions, his intentions are to make you fail ! Monotone and boring lectures! DONT GET HIM FOR YOUR GE !!!
I didn't like him at first (when I got my first essay graded) but he grew on me over the semester. His class is set up well for online (during COVID 19). 5 exams (no final), maybe 15 quizzes, and 3 essays (short). Don't be fooled by the low point value on the essays, each one is 5% of the grade because of the way they are weighted.
Gervais is very understanding and caring. He seems to enjoy teaching and really just expects participation and effort. He was responsive outside of class and his textbook is super easy to follow, as well as the quizzes and exams. I never felt "tricked" or like he (or the readings) didn't cover things that were on the tests. Great teacher!
Fun professor who loves the subject and relates what we learn and the impacts of everything. 2 papers that are very easy and the quizzes + exams are easy too. Everything is literally out of the textbook. Also tons of extra credit was offered. Utilized Google Earth which made it even more fun. MAKE SURE YOU PARTICIPATE, he wants participation
Bruce Gervais is really passionate about teaching this subject. Two mandatory reading materials are tied to the quizzes throughout the course. He really likes to interact with students, so participation definitely matters. TAKE LECTURE NOTES RIGOROUSLY - both what he says about the lecture slides as well as what's on the slides are BOTH on exams.
I took Geog1, easy and an amazing class. Learned a lot and was fun. Taking GEOG115 rn, NOT GOOD. Weekly quizzes based on the text, not hard but time consuming/draining. Questions, including exams, are terrible wording/difficult to understand. Class not very hard, but annoying to deal with. I liked him in Geog1, but now I think hes just so-so.
In his class, you will have weekly quizzes due Sunday that are strictly booked material, and then you will have 5 exams that include only lecture material. The questions are worded in a confusing manner and the questions that are correct are often marked wrong for some reason. He also assigns a term paper that he'll grade pretty tough. Try to avoid
If you take this class be prepared to teach yourself all the material. He'll lecture 50+ slides at a ridiculously fast paces so most of the students have to open the slides on their own devices. He is really bad at answering questions, and usually wont answer your question at all. The average grades on all tests are Cs or Ds.
Every single class is a lecture off of slides he creates. There are tests every 2-3 weeks on so much information that can barely be remembered. He lectures up until the last minute of class and if you ask him if something will be on a test, he will not tell you. He will say he does not answer those types of questions. Attendance is mandatory.
Funny and knowledgeable professor. Attendance taken daily. Willing to work with students. Fast grader & updated Canvas consistently. Homework weekly, 1 big paper, 5 tests. Some questions on tests can be worded funkily or focus on extremely specific parts of lecture
Honestly this professor sucks. If you're looking for an easy upper division class this is not it. His exams are difficult with the highest grade on 3 of them being a C. Would not recommend. Also requires a 5 page essay which he grades harshly.
Dr. Gervais really wants students to learn biogeography, however, his exams and assignments (of which one is a paper) are different than most. The exams are multiple choice, but be sure to study for these as they require you to remember information on random slides. Overall, Dr. Gervais is a nice and approachable prof., but be aware of exams.
Prof Gervais has many thoughtful and interesting lectures. The tests are very hard and contain "trick" questions. The garbage audit project is easy and unique to include in the class. He is a very knowledgable and quirky professor. I enjoyed his class and think that he is a great lecturer. Be sure to study and attend the lectures though.
get multiple tries on quizzes. quick writing responses are easy. tests are a bit difficult. show up to class for attendance. Tested on random bits of knowledge instead of how the systems work together kinda old school in that way.
i enjoyed this class bc of material, you can tell the professor enjoys teaching but the homework did not do much for me and had to pay for it. 3 midterms with one paragraph assignments every once in a while like pop quizzes which were easy.
Intro to Meteorology with Dr. Gervais was a good class. The lectures were always lively! The e-textbook was a bit of a drag since the chapters were very long and the book's content was not even what the exams were about. Pay attention during the lectures and try to participate/ask questions since he is very knowledgeable.
He is an alright teacher, can come off a little condescending but he knows his stuff. Is a bit socially awkward so it can be hard to approach him and ask him questions. If you dont attend classes you will fail this class. Overall, I only took him because I need the GE credits.
He gaslights and guilt trips students for not knowing something. Expects class participation 100%, lecture always involves someone speaking up about something involving the topic.
The topics he talks about are interesting. He sometimes brings up politics which is unrelated to the material. He is funny and quirky. Attend lectures and take the quizzes for the book online, not hard. The wording on tests can be tricky, making it hard. The garbage project was insightful. Not sure what I am supposed to get out of the class.
Assignments are kind of hard but he's such a fun teacher. He's always making class interesting and tries to get us all involved. I would take him again.
This professor is great! This course isn't very difficult as long as you attend all classes and take notes. There are 4 exams and they are all based on the in-class notes, so make sure to take detailed notes. There are online homework quizzes. You have to purchase the ebook in order to access the quizzes. Be ready for in-class writing!
At first he was a good professor. As time went by he started getting more distracted. He'd rush through the slides and we'd miss out on notes. He struggles to keep track of time and was unorganized. He openly supported a presidential candidate which was unprofessional and insensitive. He lacked compassion at times.
Great lecturer and made the subject matter interesting. Also made funny jokes. Sometimes we would have game show style practice quizzes that involved our smart phones that were fun. His real tests though, were scantron based and made up mostly of true or false questions that were easy to misinterpret. The weekly homework required tons of reading.
Intro to Meteorology with Professor Gervais was an engaging class. Lectures were lively, but the textbook wasn't very helpful. Participate in class - the professor is knowledgeable. Unstuck study was a useful study tool alongside other resources.
He was a great professor but his class was very lecture heavy. If you're not good in a sit and listen environment then this is not a class for you The book and homework are all online and connected, its around $90 for it all Im not good at science so maybe im biased but I would think this class was easier than others
Chill professor, he's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the material. Weekly reading + quizzes, 4 exams, and you can make a cheat sheet for each exam. Straight-forward class. Lecture heavy, attendance matters.
