This professor actually teaches you how to write! This class is easy if you do your work. No quizzes! No tests! Just writing, and he gives you plenty of time to do drafts and makes sure you are clear on all work! One of the best English professors, and funny
Bruce Gilman has a reverence for the English language. You must as well! If you want a good grade, you simply must kick your own ass. He's not an "E" ticket, however, he is a top quality professor.
This teacher is easy going but needs to lay off on the writting assignments and get into more class activities. All semester we write, we hardly have group work and the majority of the talking is done by him.
I am trying to take his class again. He is very clear and helpful, and he gives you a lot of time for the essays. Easy to get an A.
Very helpful teacher.Good communication.Just be in class and do your homeworks and try your best in punctuations and avoid run-ons and fragments, then you'll get A.easy tests and no final.very fair grading.
Prof. Gilman is a wonderful instructor. He not only teachs you how to identify different styles of writing but helps you to mimic those styles in your own papers.I highly recommend him!
not the easiest class in the world, but his lectures are interesting and his credibility is through the roof. The man knows what he is teaching, and he his class will definately help you improve your writing skills. Very meaningful class.
A lot of workloads. Easy A if you could write just like the Orange County register journalist or any prominent newspaper article.
What an inspiration. Lead me to realize why English is an art. You will learn a lot, live a lot, and explore yourself completely. You will be a better writer after this class with Mr. Gilman.
inspirational teacher. seems to really enjoy his job, assignments are fair, treats his students with respect. A++++ to this professor!
This teacher is amazing. There are 4 essays to write. He gives you enough time to write and gives it back the next class. There are extra credit opportunities ALL the time. He is funny which makes class go by. He ends class 30 minutes early everytime. He stays for the 30 incase you need help. I would take this teacher again. Easy grader.
this class was not easy, but if you want to learn something about english this is the teacher to have. definetly recommend
kinda tough but all around good teacher. The 10 pg paper at the end will kill you! just don't procrastinate to the very end. it takes longer than you think!
This class was amazing. He really did have an interest in his students and what they were learning. I would recommend the class to anyone!!
Very good teacher. giveas accurate time to write essays but gives too many. % major assignments and alot of little ones in between really nuts about punctuation!!! if your busy i would not recommend.
i used to love english, and after his class, i hate it. he is so picky about everything, it makes you wonder if he likes ANYTHING you write.
he makes you buy the book, and we only use it once or twice. what, does this guy think we are made of money or something!?
I USED TO LOVE ENGLISH, AND NOW I HATE IT. IF YOU DID NOT TAKE HIM IN 1A, YOU WONT UNDERSTAND HIS WRITING STYLE IN 1B.
English has always been my roughest subject, but after Mr. Gilman's class my English skills have soared! He makes it easy to learn the subject and the assignments given are thought-provoking. His grading is fair and his comments are extremely accurate. I only wish my Eng. 1B teacher is as phenomenal and I regret not taking his 1B class.
I actually thought he was tougher than my English 1A Honors class. It's true he doesn't just hand out A's to everyone, but he has great feedback and really shapes you as a writer. He will pretty much only give you an A if you deserve it, the way college should be. No homework, just work hard on the research paper at the end and you will do well.
WARNING: VERY HARSH GRADER. He doesnt cut us any slack, everything has to be perfect- to his liking. Dude its saddleback, not harvard!
English Comp is a subject I enjoy and Mr. Gilman is a professor I admire. He is informative and helpful in aspects of writing and in life! If you want to grow as a writer and a student take his class. You won't be disappointed.
Prof. Gilman is an incredibly articulate teacher who holds his students to a high regard. He grades tough and expects a lot out of you, but he gives you the tools to increase your skills and better your writing abilities. He's funny and honest. I changed my major to English because of him.
Prof. Gilman requires a lot from his students but your writing will improve tremendously if you do the work. Come to class, pay attention, DO THE WORK and don't get behind... it's true that he's a harsh grader but he's fair and willing to help. He definitely pushes people to reveal a deeper potential. I'd take him again!
His humanities class is very interesting. He really requires his students to think. He knows a LOT...very very smart guy. Weekly quizzes, a 6 page term paper and group presentation. Attend every class session & get half a grade boost! Lots of movies, youtube plays, slides. Fun class. Easy A or B if you just do the work. Lots of extra credit given.
I love the Gilmeister. He is hilarious, and teaches while making the class fun. He expects a lot from his students, but with hard work, an A is attainable. Show him that you care about the class. He is a very very smart man and knows his stuff. Make sure your formatting is correct and put time into finding sources for your essays. Be "CONCISE".
Great teacher. Knowledgeable, helpful, and a nice guy. Not too easy or too hard. Highly recommended.
VERY GOOD TEACHER!! RECOMMEND TO EVERYBODY!! JUST DO UR HOMEWORK
I did not like him. He expects that everyone knows how to write perfectly. He also wants everyone to write like him, and if not you get a bad grade. I have always got A's in englsih, but i got a B in his class and i worked very hard. I honestly did not learn much.
English was one of my weaker subjects, but taking Professor Gilman's class helped me out a lot. His technique of teaching sort of forces you to learn, in a good way. I greatly recommend any of this classes that he teaches. This was not a hard class, but will require you to put in some effort. Just try your best and show him you want to learn.
Helpful. at first seems strict but has a sense of humor. He really does want you to become a better writer. Very good teacher, not too hard just do the homework. Short 1 page summary every week ,easy. need the Compact Reader textbook, not so much the little penguin grammar one. take him
great teacher, hes not very easy, but he lets you know what to expect and is super helpful. class is formatted perfectly and if you ever have trouble or a question he will he help you. one of the best teachers ive ever had. i didnt care for the class prior to taking it. he made my writing better and made it enjoyable to goto the class
Of all the teachers I've had in my 2yrs @ saddleback he's my favorite. He's fun, he uses current events for assignments. Yes, it is a lot of work, but it's mainly busy work not that hard. He has set steady timelines and if u keep up with it you'll do great in the class and have a great time.
A fantastic instructor, an amazing orator, a great guy, and very, very, very amiable. Get into his class before it is too late!
Best teacher I have ever had so far at saddleback. Really helps you to become a great writer. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and is very funny. Easy to talk to, tough grader but, you won't be penalized or fail the class. If you take the time to do the work you will succeed no matter what. I highly recommend this teacher.
I've taken three of his classes and did well in all of them. Generally you will be doing work but it's consistently paced so you'll never get caught off guard. I get the impression that he actually does want you to learn and makes the effort if you show determination. Always has a point to make with what he says. Oftentimes dismisses class early.
Bruce Gilman is awesome! He's funny and keeps you interested in what he's teaching. He once even told the class "Dont forget to write the answers on your hand!" obviously he's joking or so I think... He's not a tough grader if you know what your doing. He offers outside of class assistance aswell.
Professor Gilman is awesome. He really cares about his students and although his 3 hour class feels long sometimes he's honestly an amazing teacher and he cares about what he does. I have become such a better writer in his class. Don't count on an A because he is a hard grader but you will get so much better from taking his class!
Loved this class! Probably the best professor I have had at Saddleback thus far. Definitely a critical eye when grading, which I think is important to raise the bar. He was the perfect combination of being tough while still encouraging you. Recommend for sure!
He is one of the most caring teachers I've ever had. He was great and very helpful. If you need to miss class or you missed an assignment you can email him and talk to him about it. He is very understanding and wants to see you succeed.
He's an excellent English teacher. I could care less for English, but he made it a bit interesting. He really cares about his students passing. I also think you should try your hardest on your first essay. If you really impress him with that, then he will take a liking to you.
I honestly can't understand why Gilman has so many good reviews on this site. I only took his class because everyone said he was funny etc., but he is horribly arrogant and annoying. He talks through in-class writing (can't concentrate!) and he gives quizzes and doesn't collect them. Hate going to class. Pretty unfair grader but I have an A anyway.
GREAT TEACHER. I CAN'T WAIT TO TAKE HIM NEXT SEMESTER :)
Great teacher! Has a funny sense of humor. Tells stories and doesn't mind getting off topic sometimes. If you want to do well in eng1A I would suggest taking his eng200 to brush up on your skills. He does assign homework weekly but works with you and accepts late work but will mark you down..go to all his classes it really pays off in the end!
Awesome guy. Very intelligent and funny and clearly has a passion for his subject. It seems like a lot of work in the beginning but you get the hang of it. Assignments are very clear and he is happy to answer questions.I started with very little knowledge of Shakespeare and I really grew to enjoy and appreciate his work from this class.
Excellent teacher! If you?re interested in learning how to write well, take his class. He keeps the class interesting, he?s fair, and he?s helpful.
Truly wants his kids to learn and pass his class. Understanding, very smart. Will match your level of motivation to the class. Be ready to participate, amount of writing really isn't too bad. Walks you through every step and you truly become a better writer. Strongly recommend.
I liked Professor Gilman. I thought he was really funny and nice. He is always willing to help students and goes over essays very well. I hated writing essays because I was never good at them, but he really helped me and I am writing essays better than I ever had.
The best teacher I have had at Saddleback. Classes are interesting and funny, even when the material isn't. Assignments are very straight forward. Great class!
Very hard teacher if you suck at writing essays; however if you go to his office hours and the LAP your writing can improve drastically. He's funny at first but sometimes(rarely) he gets cranky.
Awesome teacher. Clear, concise, and caring. <--- Alliteration HA. Honestly class was hard and challenging but Gilman taught me how to write and I'm thankful for that.
Awesome guy. He is very clear on what he wants you to do. Makes a few jokes to keep the class interesting. His grading is fair, and the peer reviews help you paper a lot. I'm in honors and i stink at english, but his comments on your rough drafts help.
He's brilliant. But he doesn't know how to communicate his ideas. Very disappointed in the way the material was organized. Didn't feel like id learned anything at the end of class. COuld have read the textbook on my own.
Rambles. A lot... If you got a short attention span like me then this isn't the class for you. The assignments are useless. He's cool. If u want to learn about Greek theater then take this class
A FANTASTIC professor! He really cares about his students! He even mentions this site in his class a couple times! He has a great personality and just wants you to succeed.
Brilliant mind and speaks very eloquently. I personally just enjoyed listening to him go off on topics. Read the text, pay attention to his explanation of them in class, and use them on the essays. This class is very straightforward. Do the work get the grade. You might learn a thing or two from this guy.
One of the best instructors I've had. Assignments are weekly, but never overwhelming. Lots of time for revisions if necessary. Some time in class is dedicated to improving your own work. Constructive criticism.
Gilman was a great teacher!Be prepared to be in constant writing. I took him for 1A & 1B Honors, and received a B both semesters. He is a harsh grader, but you learn a lot in the little span of time.I recommend taking him.If you want an A you will have to work your butt off, it doesn't happen very often. But overall great man, funny,& really cares!
Great Teacher! Extremely Helpful. One of the only teachers that actually care! If you explain to him your personal situations at school he will work with you. Recommend him to anyone!
Love Bruce...one of Saddleback's jewels. He is an amazing writing teacher and a very learned man. I am grateful to have had him and am taking him next semester for 17B...looking forward to it. Class is not easy but you will learn so much.
It's true that most of the class does poorly on his quizzes, but I don't think he weighs those grades heavily. He cares more about our essays and tests: we can send him a couple pages of our drafts, which he returns with useful comments, and he provides a study guide for the midterm and final. Returns tests and essays w/in ~a week. Would recommend.
Before enrolling in Humanities I had no idea what to expect; it turned out to be one of my favorite classes. He's a smart intelligent man. Clear, reasonable assignments, provides in depth study guides for the midterm&final. Quizzes after each reading, fairly simple. Note: I'm not the brightest kid and slightly a procrastinator. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I loved his class. He always has a story to tell or trivia for a cocktail party. I learned a lot, enjoyed the class immensely. A little self-indulgent, but it's not unagreeable. Every assignment is crystal clear, and he posts grades regularly. Would definitely recommend, it seems like most students enjoy his classes.
The weekly quiz was the hardest part for me. The questions are very specific and detailed, if you test/quiz well, you should be alright. Very helpful for papers, checks them over if you ask. He gives you a study guide for the midterm/final. If you are not an english major, you probably wont be interest in the material
Gilman is truly a class act. Although we had our differences at first, I could not help but admire and respect his knowledge of everything English. He is a master of his craft and even though the class is not easy, you will become a much better writer and analytical thinker!! If you get the chance to take his class, DO IT!! You won't be sorry:)
This class is not easy for those who do not love literature! Weekly you take a quiz and they are tough! Tons of reading, so if you are a lit/english major, you will be prepared to transfer!! What he wants for the essays/tests are very clear though. He assigns the reading the week before it's due, which doesn't allow for much reading ahead.
Interesting content. My class was mostly just interested in the grade, so we didn't have discussion, he would mostly just talk, which was disappointing to me. His quizzes are unclear, he leaves blanks to fill in on obscure parts of the reading, but they don't count much toward your grade. Mostly the two papers, midterm, and final. Pretty easy A.
Must take Gilman's class! He approaches the subjects with brilliant objectivity. Book is a compilation of humanity's greatest works of literature. He makes it very clear that his lectures contain everything on the test. There are two essays, and he only wants effort and perspective. Read the book excerpts, take notes in lectures, and you'll learn!
Prof. Gilman is passionate about what he teaches and it is easy for any of his students to see that. He makes you feel like you want to learn because he is realistic about what he expects from the students. His lectures are amazing, very interesting class.
Bruce runs an engaging and challenging course. If you have any interest in English literature, I think you will find this course is worth your time and effort. The book is a must. Take Bruce! He loves what he teaches!
If you want to take a course to get more familiar with Romantacism, the Victorian Age, modernism, and post modernism this is the class for you:). He's a very insightful and knowledgable professor, and he really wants to know your take on this literature. A lot of poems and short stories, some plays, and "Heart of Darkness". He also offers EC
Very challenging, but very rewarding class. My writing has certainly been improved and I admired Gilman as a teacher (possibly my favorite at Saddleback thus far). Be prepared to earn your grade, not an easy A.
This is a great class for people interested in English Lit. Professor Gilman is helpful, understanding, makes himself available to students and does his best to make the course interesting. He's obviously very intelligent and wants to his students to profit from his course. It's not an easy A, you have to earn your grade but it's worth it.
Professor Gilman's English 1B Honors class was difficult, but if one does all the homework and turns homework in on time, then one will should expect a high grade. Gilman teaches! He makes sure you understand concepts and teaches one important skills to write a effective research essay. He is the best professor at saddleback. Take his class!
I loved this class. If you love Literature and how it applies to every facet of life, this is the class for you. Gilman loves what he teaches and you learn a lot about the human experience as well. Homework is mostly coming up with questions about the reading (1-3 per reading). Read the materials and you will learn so much. Would take again
This professor is brilliant and challenging. His sarcastic demeanor always has a smile underneath and while I was pressed throughout the semester to deliver my best, I was entertained in class every time. Caring professor who loves what he does.
Amazing amazing professor!! He is passionate, intelligent, and super helpful! This class kicked my butt, yet I learned more in one semester with him than the years of high school English. He engages with his students, so it is not a regular boring English class. Read the assignment requirements, do the work, and you will be fine!
If you take this class, know the bible inside and out. He relates every piece of symbolism to the bible and marks you wrong if you don't compare it to specific verses. Quizzes every day, but not on the story, it's on random things that most students missed, even after reading the story 5 or 6 times. Be sure to read the author bios in the stories.
Of all the classes I've taken at Saddleback, this was both the most challenging and most rewarding. I've seen my writing ability improve so much since taking Gilman's class. Not an easy A, but if you work hard you will earn it and come out with a research paper to be proud of. Also, go get to know Gilman, well worth the time to go to office hours.
Dr. Gilman is an amazing teacher. As an English major, English, as well as literature and creative writing has always come easy to me. Gilman's English 17B class is the first class I have ever taken that has challenged that. Lots of homework, difficult quizzes, and lots of thinking, but if you want to learn, this is the professor to take.
Professor Gilman is a gifted man. He is extremely intelligent and wants nothing except to share that knowledge and help his students become more well-rounded with literature. Yes, his coursework is tough but if you dig deeper and put in the effort- it will definitely pay off!
Wow, Prof. Gilman is without a doubt one of my favorite English teachers! His class is difficult, but he makes the material accessible. Go to his office hours, attend class specific tutoring sessions, email him drafts, start assignments early, and ask questions--your writing will improve and you will get an A!
He really cares about your success, both in his class and in the future. His class consists of four short papers and one research paper. He grades every component and offers extra credit, so it is easy to get a good grade if you do all of the work. Take one of his classes; you will not regret it! My writing improved SO much!!
Oratorically brilliant. I'm surprised he isn't a lawyer. When I took his class I made a word bank of stuff to look up because his vocabulary was so colorful. This class was hard; I spent a lot of time working in the tutoring center. As a result, however I am a much stronger writer. I highly recommend this teacher.
Good teacher. He is a tough grader though. But he really cares about his work. Also offers extra credit.
Brilliant speaker, and a thoughtful man. He has a firm opinion on most subjects, but is willing to hear/consider different perspectives. Go to his office hours and have read him over your papers at least a week before they are due. He is a harsh grader, and has no reservations giving students subpar grades.
Gilman is the man! He will change your life with the challenging coursework and lectures. Incredibly gifted man. Cares about his students. Please take him. Take his 1BH class as well. Do all the homework.
Dr. Gilman is, honestly, the best professor I've ever had. He is passionate, and inspiring, and caring, and will make even the most reluctant reader interested in the material. He is the reason I decided to pursue literature as a major, and I would gladly take all my courses with him if such were possible.
He was a pleasure to have as a professor. He could really capture the interests of his students very well and I found his lectures and commentary very enjoyable. I would definitely take his class again if I could.
Gilman is the best English teacher I have ever taken. His lectures were fun and entertaining to the point where I found myself excited to attend class. His quizzes are very specific, and he does not give As very easily. I am taking two more classes with him.
I was going to change my major until I took ENG 17B with this professor. Jesus above, is he amazing. Yes, he does not give A's freely, but when you work really hard and do get an A, it's amazing. His lectures are amazing, he's easy to approach, and he treats you like a fellow professor instead of a student. If you need inspiration, I recommend him.
Professor Gilman is a very intelligent man. I really really enjoyed taking his Honors Composition 1A class at Saddleback College. He gives great feedback and is very open to helping students before and after class as well as office hours and easy to reach by email. Lots of papers but fun class! Tough grader, but great professor nonetheless TAKE HIM
Professor Gilman is a well-spoken and well-read individual. He has a captivating way of lecturing that incorporates fresh and thought-provoking ideas. He is passionate about students expanding their microcosms and encourages them to think outside the box. Although a tough grader, his criterion for grading is fair and explicit.
Professor Gilman is an amazing teacher. Passionate and inspiring. He really cares about his students and respects their opinions which shows in his teaching style. Encourages feedback and office hours. Very clear grading, homework, and test criteria. Also, get ready for his two favorite things to do in class: taking polls and make lists. :)
Professor Gilman is one of those teachers who captivates the room with his ideas and overall demeanor. Although the class requires hard work and dedication, it was really a joy to take. Lectures are inspirational and enticing- with a little humor added to them. He reminds me of Richard Gilmore from Gilmore Girls :)! Great class, great teacher.
About to graduate from CSUF, but he remains to be one of the BEST teachers I've had while getting my undergrad. He is truly an inspirational professor and makes lectures engaging and interesting. He is one of the most profound professors I've ever had, and I would 100% take him again. You have to put in the work, but it's super rewarding.
Professor Gilman is a great professor. His grading scale may seem harder than most; he assumes that his student have basic composition skills. And if you do not, he will work with you.
Do not take this class if you fear a challenge. Professor Gilman is an amazing professor with a gift for teaching, but this course material is definitely not something that can be done halfway or at the last minute. Mostly paper oriented with one group oral presentation. A class I will never forget! I recommend this course.
A very respectable teacher. Super informative and gives really good input. Was also very easy to talk to and ask for help when it came to writing the research paper or even when it came to helping you decide which 4 year univ to choose. Class does require quite a bit of reading. Class is also based on your semester long research paper.
Mr. Gilman is encouraging and understanding. He is a harsh grader, but he pushes you to succeed. Participation and respect are a must in his class. Lots of ready and assignment heavy.
Lots of small assignments work their way up to a paper. 3 smaller papers total, 8 page research paper/presentation, then a final paper based on “assignment #2”. As long as you do the assignments and really listen to his feedback (he writes a lot!) you'll do well. Seems overwhelming, but is 100% doable, learned a lot through the research process.
really amazing class and professor, if you like writing you'll really enjoy this class.
