It's his way or the highway. He has this holier than thou attitude toward students and can make students feel stupid at times.
It's his way or nothing. Have to write exactly the way he tells you, instead of the most effective way for you. I will never write how he likes us to again.
The class only had 5 papers, one of them was a research paper. It is his way of writing and if you are not doing it he will dock you , but I thinkhe is jsut trying to help us in our path of life.
Only write 5 papers...not too hard...helps alot..is willing to read over your paper and give you feedback before you turn it in. Very Helpful...has a sacrcastic mood so be ready!
really helps out and clears everything up
Has a **** attitude...ladies beware!Be sure to pick a topic he likes or you will be downgraded, and it is an absolute must that you write exactly how he teaches you to!
He is a great teacher
He is a really smart guy and makes you work hard in the class. He scares you the first day by saying he gives the fewest A's, but if you keep up with the work in the class you will do fine. Also have him read your papers before you turn them in.
He can be intimidating at first, but is actually a great teacher and nice guy. He really makes you think and will help you write better and think critically. He is not that hard though, and he gives you a 2nd chance on stuff. Only 5 papers. Take him.
Get ready to write four drafts for each paper. After a while though, you get used to it. Handtke, athough a tough grader, is very helpful and clear. He also has a great sense of humor. Just do what he says and you should get a fairly decent grade.
I was scared of him!
Awsome teacher. very funny. grades on content not so much on grammer. has very indepth conversation in class. very smart!! and thought provoking
Good teacher, hard grader but you will learn a lot!! Very funny guy, good sense of humor. You have to do a lot of work, if you want to become a better writer take him, if you wanna slide by with an easy grade don't take him.
Very good teacher, is willing to help you formulate your ideas so you can be more effective in your papers and definaltely demonstares effectively how he wants things done. I would take him again anyday
Awesomest Eng teacher i have ever had. Yes, you have to apply the techniques he teaches but doesnt that make sense? Teaches you to think more about things than just the surface and definately hilarious, but he almost ran me over in his silver van one
Funny as hell. Made composition class enjoyable.
One of the best English teachers I have ever had. Not the easiest grader in the world but if go to class and follow his writing style you will do fine.
He's a very good teacher with a great sense of humor. Really makes you think and analyze everthing. This class will definately improve your writing, and you will use, for the rest of your life, the ideas and skills taught in this class.
He really helped me to improve my writing. I enjoyed being in his class despite the fact that I hate writing papers. He's a tough grader, but it makes you work that much harder. He is also willing to take time out of his day to help you.
i didn't really like him. he was mean to me and he didn't listen when i tried to tell him about my paper i needed help on. he's too opinionated for me and he is a very hard grader. expect to write papers in HIS style. p.s....he looks like a piranha!!! :(
I mean hes pretty cool makes you think,,,but he is an impossible grader, as long as you write how HE wants you to, you'll be fine,,,,hes very into how good of a person/parent he is, kind of annoying
Extremely opinionated, makes you feel like a moron if you disagree with him. Very difficult to write a paper in your own style. Hard grader, thinks he is really funny...but he's not. Sit in the back so you can do something else while he drones on about things he doesn't like.
He is a very funny guy and knows what he wants in a paper. His grading if VERY difficult but you def. learn a lot about writing which you will be able to use throughout your lifetime. I recommend him!
Likes to talk about his "excellent parenting" and things he disagrees with. Definitely knows what hes talking about in terms of English, however hes pretty hard to please.
Great teacher. He taught me a lot about writing and def. improved my skills. Just DON'T screw around and start writing your way. Do it HIS way and life will be easy for you. Plus I don't care what anybody else says....the man is hillarious if you major in smart ass:-)
Taking this class will definately improve your writing skills. Your papers are never due on the date assigned and he is very understanding. He is hilarious and very insightful. He teaches you how to expand your thoughts and really convey what you're trying to say.
Wow, this guy is very opinionated! Scared the crap out of all of us the first day with his requirements and how he isn't afraid to report you for plagarism and get you kicked off this campus. Overall, I learned alot even though I worked my butt off and still only got a B. Suck up and you'll do fine!
Mr. Handtke's class is very fun. Some great discussions and viewpoints covered. He is funny and helpful. Make sure to stop by and have him read your papers. Difficult grader, don't worry though put in the work and you'll do fine.
Bruce is fun. He's opinionated and specific, but if you do what he asks, and spend time on what you hand in, you're set. Don't argue with him, you wont win. He is sarcastic, and makes class fun to come to. Have an open mind when you go to class too, otherwise you'll get angry! i liked his style.
Knows what he's talking about, but class is not easy. If you want to learn, take him, but if you want a easy class, take someone else.
Bruce is my favorite so far. He is fun and makes discussions interesting. If you want to learn to write better take him. But if you want an easy A don't. He will make you a better writer. Come to class, participate, and learn a ton!
I learned a lot with him.
well bruce is to me an average professor...attendance is part of the grade, so make sure you show up, he can be funny, and he can be opinionated, but hes always there for help, no matter how hard the papers might be, LISTEN and you will do well, he has pop quizzes about the reading too.
great guy. tells it like it is. hes opinionated but doesnt force his opinions on you. is very interested in making you a better writer. his style will challenge you a little but overall hes a good teacher to take.
Not as hard as people say he is. If you do what he says when he says to do it, you'll do fine. I put forth little effort and pulled a B in the class.
Likes to talk about himself and his family during class period. Is not helpful outside of class. Has his own ideas which he thinks are the best. He is constantly talking about how awful administration is. If you want to really learn anything other than his personal viewpoints about how wonderful he is, stay away!
One of the best professors I've ever had at this school. He is always willing to listen and help out. He knows what he is talking about and I learned a TON in his class! Definitely take him.
A pretty weird guy. Talks about his life way too much. There would be no point in going to class besides the fact he takes attendance
he's very opinionated and sarcastic and shares his stories in class a little too much. he's a good guy and an alright prof. whether i spent hours or just a few minutes on papers i got B's on them all. Take him for an easy B but dont waste time trying for A's he doesnt give out too many.
He is scary at first, but he is only like that the first day. He learns everyones name in the first day or two and is very helpful. I got B's on all the papers except the final one and got an A in the calss. He always extends the due dates, which is very nice. He most certainly made me work, but I became a much better and critical thinking writer.
He is really intimadating at first. Really down to earth guy. He is a hard grader if you don't explain and backup your ideas. Go in and talk to him with your paper and he'll tell you what you need to do to fix it. In class he is so funny, his jokes and everything is a good time.
intimidating.
After reading the other rating on this site, I was a little freaked out because of his intimidation, and i agree he is intimidating, but the class is enjoyable. I think his intimidation is actually good for the class, because it caused me to write like I never wrote b4. Plus he can be kinda funny sometimes. I recommend him, but be ready to work.
tends to ramble a bit about things that don't really apply to the topic, but i think it makes the class a little more bearable. can be intimidating, but he means it in the best way. willing to tell you what you're doing wrong if you go see him in his office. very helpful.
Very enjoyable class - discussed a broad variety of topics that challenged students' writing and critical thinking skills. His rules were set in stone (for good reason), if you follow them, there's no problem. It's that easy. A great college writing professor, highly recommended for everybody. Enjoyable guy, fun to talk to, and sincerely nice.
very enjoyable guy to have to listen to and is willing to help all the time. tough grader, i wish i would've went to his office and got more help than i did
He's hilarious and makes class very enjoyable, I actually looked forward to it. He's very clear with what he expects and is a tough grader, but it helped me a lot. There are no page requirements, which I loved. I would highly recommend him.
a no B/S type of guy. He knows his stuff but he grades tough. i went for office hours once and he was very helpful. he didn't just tell me the answer like i hoped he would, but he made me think it through. i learned a lot, but look else where if your looking for that easy A.
Basically, Mr. Handtke is a great teacher. I learned more about writing in one semester then i have in my entire schooling career. There is no busy work, everything he has you do is meaningful and truly helps your writing. He knows what he is talking about and will call you out if you don't.
He's ridiculously hard when he grades. If you haven't written a book already in your life, I don't recommend taking him. Also, if you want an A in English 110 then do not take him.
really interesting, down to earth, smart guy. he should be the president. papers are somewhat hard but you will improve your writing.
Prof. Handtke is an outstanding teacher. I learned an incredible amount in his class inlcuding how to organize my thoughts in papers, defend viewpoints, and look at things from every aspect & perspective. He taught us how to be short and concise, get to the point, and get our point across. By far, best prof.! You won't be sorry you took him.
Horrible
Professor Handtke frikin rules. Extremly helpfull. His papers are hard, and his gradeing is hard, but you will definatly get better at writing and have fun in his class. Most of the time you will just sit there and discuss current events. I was definatly not looking forward to college writing before, but now its one of the only classes i like.
Great guy, this class won't waste your time...it's a class that you won't get an A in most likely but you will take more out of the class then others. Makes listening and attending classes very easy. The man will say anything he is the most brutally honest guy.
this teacher is rediculous! I did not learn anything from him other than his daughter is an RA at minnesota, his son is lazy and not good at school and he thinks throwing a football around with his kids in the back yard makes him a great father oh yea and as a part time teacher he does not get paid enough.... how many of you make more 25$ an hour?
He rambles about things for much longer than needed. I'm getting tired of his personal stories. Really man, I'm just here to write a paper, not get lectured about the teenage population. I wish I took a different prof.
Class discussions are worthless. He constantly talks about himself and relates nothing to the actual subject. I attended class everyday and worked way too hard on my papers to only get a B/C in the class. I learned absolutely nothing about writing, and I regret ever taking this professor.
He'll help you outside of class whenever you need it. In class discussions consist of him talking about his life and how great of a guy he is. He thinks his view is right no matter what..BUT i would take this class, you only write 5 papers and take two quizzes..gives you Soooo much time to complete easy papers!
I hate writing. I can't write well. And I was not looking forward to this class at all. But Mr. Handtke makes writing interesting. I've learned alot, not only about writing but how to think critically. I would definately recommend him if you want to learn anything. He is a tough grader, but I haven't gotten anything lower than a B.
Prof. Handtke is the best professor I've ever had. His classes really forced me to think outside of my established worldview and to grow in my writing abilities. By applying his method, I've rocked every paper for every other class. Prof. Handtke's a hottie!
Bruce is a great prof! Although his lectures rarely reflect on writing, he still gives useful knowledge. He tells you EXACTLY what you need in your papers, and if you do not follow that to the last detail you will not get an A. He is extremely helpful to anyone outside of class. Didn't look forward to taking this class but Bruce made it tolerable.
Extremely hard but very interesting. You will learn to be an excellent writer if you really apply yourself in this class. I spent hours on each paper. You can earn a good grade if you apply yourself, are respectful, listen up, and ask for help when you get stuck or confused. I think he's awesome and it was by far my favorite class all semester.
Very tough teacher, but totally worth all the effort. He'll warn you at the beginning of semester that if you don't intend to work hard, drop the class. Take heed! If you come to class with an open mind and an intention to learn, Handtke is the man for your English class!
I am a much better writer and critical thinker because of him. He has no paper length requirements. He also does tell you exactly what he wants on his papers. What you discuss in lecture may not seem to apply to your paper assignments but keep your mind open. You will understand his methods are pointed towards critical thinking!
Bruce is scary the first week and will intimidate you, but he's not bad at all. He has humor and he is very intelligent. Be prepared to debate in class, and he loves to talk about social security and how he won't get any. I learned alot from him and am a much better writer. He's a good prof. Recommended take him!
It was the best class of my semester! He makes it so you look forward to coming to his class!!!!!!!! He will make you a better writer! Good luck on the Final ;)
Yes, he does have a lot of good points to some things but he is just plain selfish! He ONLY sees his side to every story. The only way to get an A is to get inside his head and write HIS opinions. He is a very hard teacher no matter how much time and effort you put into your papers. I WOULD NOT take him!!
Really boring class. I loved writing but he's very, very picky. Helped improve my writing skills, but I didn't like him as a person.
Good Teacher. Would definitely recommend him to my friends. He explains what he wants on his papers and if you listen in class and use the feedback he gives you on each paper you can get an "A". You do need to show up to class every time because he takes attendance but he usually has a good story to tell.
His classes are very interesting and fun, but he is a TOUGH grader. He won't grade your papers if you forget to underline you thesis or some other silly thing. You really need to back up your viewpoint, or he'll rip you to shreds. otherwise helpful to broaden your mind
Handtke has a good sense of humor and some great stories. If you take him you WILL become a better writer. He is not a tough grader; he is an honest grader. He tells you everything you need to get a good grade. Just follow directions. REMEMBER THE 5 STEPS OF WRITING (he asks it for every quiz.)
Nice guy. Amazing stories. Insanely hard grader though. Made me hate to write, nothing was good enough. If you want to stay entertained, take him. If you want an A, don't.
Ridiculously hard grader. Good luck if you want an A but its probably impossible. Good sense of humor though.
Crazy hard grader. Funny guy but no matter how good your papers are...he still won't like them.
He is a hard grader and you can't slack off and expect to get a good grade but you will become a better writer definitely.
Unless you want to learn nothing, be graded very harshly, and be sometimes offended by his comments, don't take this class. It was a huge waste of my time.
At first he might seem very intimidating but later I found him to be very entertaining and quite funny. The essays aren't hard but he seems to grade pretty tough. Just do your best.
He may seem overbearing at first, but once you both get eased into the class it smooths out quickly.
Handtke is tough, if you're not an avid writer you probably won't get an A. However, he acknowledges improvement and you become a much better writer throughout his class. His stories and rants make for an interesting class period. He'll tell you this all the first day!
Teachers like Bruce are far and in between. He is tough but he cares about his students. If you want to do well go see him and he will be incredibly helpful. Great experience.
If you actually want to LEARN something from a simple gen ed class, go for Handtke. If you want to be handed an A, have your diaper changed, and sleep all day, then go to some other professor's class. If you want to think critically about real life issues and be able to think on your own without being spoonfed, go for Handtke. Hands down.
He is a great teacher, but you have to be ready to write. If you actually try and give it a good effort, you will do alright in the class. Unlike most professors he makes you think about how the world really works. He might offend some people but I think its great how he has his own views on everything.
He said a girl in my class wears sex pants...
I actually took his class 2 years ago and just wanted to say that I urge students to take his class. No it's not an easy A, but by taking his class, your cumulative GPA will end up being higher bc of all that you learn in that class! After all, college is supposed to prepare you for the future isn't it?
Bruce knows what's up. More of a modern day philosophy teacher than english, but the class we fun and he'll make you laugh on more than one occasion.
By far one of the best professors i've had. He definitely knows his stuff, and will help you whenever you ask. The class was fun to attend, we always laughed. A tough grader, but helps you learn your mistakes, which is the important part. I would recommend him!
If you want a bad English grade, take him. No matter how well you write he won't like it. He says he isn't opinionated; he definitely is. If you have an opinion he disagrees with, he rips apart every argument you have and it doesn't always make sense. He rants about useless crap that you will never need to know. If you want an easy A don't take him
He makes class fun. He is a hard grader but if you listen to what he says its not that hard to get a decent grade. He really just wants to see that you understand what your working on and has no problem reading your paper before hand to tell you how to impove it.
Great prof!!! He actually made english class fun and it was one of my favorite classes to go to. He's a difficult grader and you almost always get a B but if you work hard and apply yourself you can get an A. Doesn't give you a lot of exams/quizzes and if he does they're usually open note. Awesome sense of humor too.
logical
Bruce is tough, but an awesome teacher. If you want to learn to write well, take him. I thought I was a good writer before taking ENG 110, but I was wrong. He made sense of any questions I had and was helpful on proofreading my drafts. You don't need to get an A on every paper to get an A in his class. He wants to see effort more than anything.
Great class, I love going every day. If you really want to learn how to think about things deeply and become a better writer, this is the way to go. He's tough, but I've improved as a writer exponentially.
Overall a great teacher and person. He will thoroughly explain any paper he assigns you and what he expects. Be prepared to do work and research, but if you want to learn how to write I recommend taking him. Also he tells fun and interesting stories to connect concepts in literature, never a dull class.
I was really skeptical about Bruce at first. he kind of came off as not that cool, but after having his class for a couple weeks, i started to like him a lot. i highly suggest going in during his office hours. he's super helpful in there. very clear with what he wants. i only had one quiz. he's hilarious and you will be a better writer by the end.
At first you may become frustrated with Bruce, but if you can make it past the Moral Compass essay, you're in the clear. He grades fairly and can recognize good arguements. He will make you a better writer, but you may not realize it right away. You will do well if you can make corrections based on his comments.
Bruce is a very nice guy and keeps class fun and exciting, but he gives you way to much work for an introductory writing class. 6 lengthy papers! Would give him a better review but he gives way to much work for a 100 level class.
At first I was very intimidated by him & tried to get out of his class because it seemed like it was going to be hard. He's really helpful and clear about what he wants in a paper. I learned a lot from him & would def recommend him! Really nice guy with a great sense of humor (which makes class a lot of fun to go to!) Be willing to work!
Bruce is a funny guy and he really knows what he's talking about. The only thing I didn't like about his class was that he makes you second-guess yourself so much that you sometimes don't remember what your point is. Once you get used to his teaching style, you'll learn a lot. He takes attendance, but allows a few absences. Pretty fair grader.
By far my favorite teacher thus far! His lectures were always extremely interesting, and you could tell he knew what he was talking about, and loved his job. He did push people's buttons a bit, but that was probably why he stands out from all other teachers. Would ABSOLUTELY recommend.
He is the rudest professor I have ever met. His class does give some helpful information, but he can not be wrong, so he is a super hard grader. It is very difficult to get an A. He also is not understanding of other people's feelings, and is very harsh and judgmental when you speak to him. I would recommend not to take his class.
Bruce was easily one of the best professors I've had. His classes are incredibly entertaining and he really got me to think about things differently and analyze information better. It's not the easiest class in the world, so if you want an easy A, don't take it, but if you actually want to learn something and grow as a student, TAKE HIM!
A very good teacher who lays out exactly what you need to do in every assignment. He makes classes enjoyable and gives different perspectives of different issue which are quite fun to listen to. If you follow his guidelines for papers, you'll be fine. He gives critical comments in his reviews of papers but he grades relatively kindly.
At first I hated the class but by the end it became one of my favorites. His lectures are never boring. He is a tough grader and expects a lot for being a 100 level class. There's 5 or 6 papers. If you want an easy A I wouldn't take Handtke but you do learn a lot from him.
Mr. Handtke is a great teacher. His lectures are very interesting and help you write better papers in general and improve in his class. He really cares about each individual student. If you are looking for an easy A I wouldn't suggest him as he is a fair but tough grader. Put in the me for the class and show up to class and you can get a good grade
I enjoyed Mr. Handtke stories and lectures however some of his grading was tough some of the time. I would recommend him because he did help me understand some important concepts.
Mr. Handtke is an amazing professor. He is a hard grader and expects a lot from his students, but I deffinitley don't think that that is something he should be criticized for. He is more than happy to meet with you and correct your paper before you actually hand it in, and is always willing to answer questions. Hands down my favorite professor!!
Professor Handtke had some of the most interesting and funny lectures. Attendance is mandatory but class seems to go by super fast. I had 5 papers and very little quizzes during the semester. He kind of grades at a 300 level and expects a lot on papers. He is sarcastic yet really funny. Not an easy A class though.
Professor Handtke was amazing! I really recommend him for anybody needing to take an English. He is helpful, fun, and very easy to talk to! I'm not a fan of English and taking it with him was a lot of fun and enjoyable! His papers are a little rough but overall if you do what is asked of you there won't be any problems at all!
I really like him as a teacher and I like listening to him talk in class. However he his a hard grader on the papers we have. He grades papers more on how new and abstract your points are in papers. I think i write very good papers, however I have trouble thinking of new points to bring to each paper. I just wish he graded papers differently.
Mr. Handtke is a great professor. His lectures are very funny and amusing, keeping class content relevant yet interesting. He expects students to follow the writing process he deems necessary to succeed in good writing, and truthfully if you follow the process you will do well on your papers. Other than papers the class is easy, highly recommend
Bruce is an excellent professor. He cares about each of his students and takes the time to actually get to know them. He has a very dry sense of humor and he will speak openly, so if you are easily offended, do not take him. He is not an easy grader, but only 4 papers, gives great feedback! Take him if you want to learn how to write very well!
Mr. Handke was great. He's really intelligent and funny. This class is all paper writing, and you can't BS your way through them. Bruce wants you to challenge yourself and not only learn to write better but to learn about the world we live in. If you're looking to BS it, don't take him. If you're a good writer and don't want to be babied, take him!
I recommend him; but don't take his class with a heavy course load. Take time to write the papers, and you will learn a lot.
Bruce is extremely funny guy but you need to make sure and follow his direction and you will have no problem writing a good paper. He also always hints at good ideas topics and other things that will help you be successful in this class.
Absolutely awesome, amazing professor. I worked hard and learned a lot. I became a better writer because of his class and still use all the stuff I've learned to write better papers. Be ready to work, you can't BS through the papers but it is worth it. Highly recommend his class.
A very "real" professor, he's not afraid to talk about any topic in class. Very precise way of teaching english. If you're not good with the typical 5 paragraph theme paper, take him. He gives you a new perspective on the typical english class.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He genuinely cares for all of his students, and even though he's a hard grader and makes you work for your grade, he makes himself always available and approachable to students. I really enjoyed his class because he teaches you more about the world and how to critically think. Overall cool & amazing dude!
Bruce is a real stand up guy, his class is super interesting and I always loved going to it. Make sure you're prepared for class though, only a few short stories in the book to read over the semester and 4 papers, same as you'll get in any other class. Go into his office hours it really helps!! Awesome professor!
Bruce is a very interesting character. His lectures basically have nothing to do with English 110. He would be better as a Poly Sci teacher if you ask me. He grades papers in an odd way (easy to get a B, impossible to get an A). And he answers every persons question with another question but he'll tell you that he's trying to be thought provoking.
Professor Handtke is amazing. This isn't your normal English class. His lectures are relevant and interesting. He makes you work for a good grade, but I am coming out of this class a much better critical thinker and writer than I ever thought I could be. I HIGHLY recommend taking Professor Handtke if you have the chance.
Bruce is by far my favorite professor that I've had. He is hilarious, sarcastic, and genuine. You learn a lot if you take his class. It isn't an easy A, he makes you work for your grade. But as long as you show up and do the four papers through semester, you'll be golden.
Bruce is a great teacher, he makes his students think and ask questions. His class is not easy but its worth taking. He is a hard grader but as long as you put effort into the paper, follow the writing process, apply your learnings, and his feedback from previous papers you will do well.
Bruce's teaching style is unlike any I've had before. He doesn't give out specific rubrics so you're forced to think for yourself rather than following a set of "rules". He makes you work for your grade, but I definitely improved as a writer so I thought his class was worth it.
He scared me at first, but once I got to know him, his class was great. He is hilarious. I got a B on the first three papers and an A on the last. He gives opportunities to boost your grade with extra credit on quizzes.
-two "pop" quizzes at the beginning of the semester-10 questions 100 points each! (memorize the names of your classmates) -doesn't use D2L so you basically NEVER know your grade which sucks -tough grader and doesn't use rubrics which is annoying -you talk about the same thing everyday and is very personal view heavy -you pick what you write about
On the first day of class I was so intimidated & thought that I would hate the class even as a decent writer. This ended up being my favorite class of the semester because he's actually hilarious, easy-going, & a huge softie. Just do your work and don't be afraid to get picked on once-in-a-while because it's all in good fun. Extremely fair grader!!
He was a very good professor. He is always available to help. Class was always interesting and we rarely had to take notes. He would assign papers and then we would read examples similar to the type of paper and discuss them. Would highly recommend taking him as a professor.
Don't take him simple as that. Goes on about pointless things and doesn't use D2L
Professor Handkte is a great professor! He turns a regular English 110 class into a critical thinking class and he teaches it much differently than mosts. He is a hard grader and it definitely is not an easy A but he makes you put the work in! He is scary at first but after a while you learn he is a big teddy bear.
He is intimidating at first but later is down to earth and easy to talk to. He is a very tough grader but gives good feedback and helps you learn to think critically. He is hilarious and a great story teller. He lectures/talks a lot in class and attendance is required.
Hilarious guy but grades tough. I'm not the greatest writer but I came out with an AB so he's overall pretty understanding. I loved coming to lecture because it was more of a story time than a boring talk. He talked more about recent news and how we can open up our minds and analyze things more than he did about writing, which HELPED so much.
You're mainly graded on four essays: a letter/op-ed, a persuasive, an argumentative, and a research. There are pop quizzes that are usually on the reading. Not afraid to talk about debatable issues. Virtually no notes. Seems scary at first but is actually a nice guy. He's not an easy A but you will definitely become a better writer by taking him.
Bruce really takes you out of your comfort zone and breaks any previous structures of writing you may have been previously taught. He is a hard grader but he really does make you a much better writer. Don't be intimidated by him because he can seem scary at first but he will grow on you.
Cool guy. Makes you think logically and systematically. Lots of good discussion.
Always available for office hours, I'd take advantage of them they really help with writing papers. He is very laid back and funny.
Very tough grader and very picky. He doesnt put grades in until the end of the semester.
He's a super nice guy and always willing to help you during office hours!! He's a tough grader, but I left his class as a much better writer. The class consists of 4 papers and a few quizzes so do the readings. Quizzes are open notes so take good notes on the readings. He does discussions more than lectures so participate in class!
He was way too sarcastic and dry as a professor. He is a pretty hard grader and he gives backhanded compliments that get very annoying directed towards our generation too often for me.
Professor Handtke is a bit intimidating at first, but he will grow on you throughout the semester. He provides very helpful feedback and does a good job of developing his students into better writers. His lectures are interesting and he cracks some pretty funny jokes. Good grades will not come easily in his class, but you will learn a lot.
Good teacher and easy grader
Bruce is a great professor, but he's strict. He really makes you think about what you're writing and why. He pushes his students to write better only because he cares and wants them to do well. He can be very funny and sarcastic at times. He's a great prof but don't take him unless you're willing to push yourself.
He is not very open minded and seems to be somewhat sexist. He was good at teaching us how to write, but often used his power and status to make political claims that no one had a chance to refute. He is very set in his ways and a discussion with him would probably go no where. Not a fan of his class at all.
Overall a tough, but caring prof. Gives lots of examples, but these turn into intricate stories (which are fun to hear, but take up time). Tough grader (nit-picks) on papers. Few opportunities to get points (participation, 4 papers, attendance). Loves good communication, so speak up!
frickin loved Bruce. Too bad he is retiring I would have liked to take a class with him again. He makes you think about your topic in a different way by encouraging you to find holes in your own arguments and the whole shabang. Taking his class helped me grow as a person and honestly, it wasn't that hard to get an A. Totally worth the experience.
