I have 3 words for you, HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TERRIBLE teacher....NEVER EVER TAKE HIS CLASS ...HE'S A DISASTER
GARBAGE PROFESSOR...people that have taken calc before have gotten bad grades from him, he doesnt teach anything...he relies on the book to teach you
difficult tests, but fair
A GREAT TEACHER
Really tough exams so slacking off in between exams is what will kill you. Do the homework and you'll get atleast a B.
content of the class can be challenging... he is a good professor though, very clear, and goes by his sylabus. the exams are impossible to finish but he scores them fairly.
tough, but fair
Nice Guy, awesome accent.
hes a good guy, pay attention, and do the homework. test are hard as hell. you wont finish them. he likes to make jokes but the are kinda dry. its definately worth your time.
Very good teacher
Professor Hedman is an AMAZING teacher. Altough his tests are hard, if you pay attention, it's not impossible to finish. He curves every test very fairly. He is a very intelligent man and I recomend him to anyone looking to take Math 115Q. I managed to fall asleep almost every day and still get a B+
He speaks very clearly, is patient, and uses good examples when explaining things. However, his tests are incredibly hard, he plays the bagpipes during his free time (good luck trying to get outside help), and he is pure evil. He gets joyful from trying to make us fail.
boring
if you pay attention in class, ask questions and do the homework you should do fine on the tests. tests are a little difficult, but if you know what you are doing you should be able to finish in time, since he does limit the time to take the tests.
very clear, does most of the assigned homework problems in class, tough exams but curves. I wish I could take more classes from him.
If you attented class, no reason why you shouldn't get a good grade! Very clear, his tests are hard, but not impossible.
An amazing teacher. He taught the class by going over homework problems which helps make everything more clear. Exams are very hard though. Class grade consists of only 2 midterms and a cumulative final(50%). If you want a good grade, go to class, pay attention, take good notes, and study hard !
i def wouldnt say hes easy, but he goes over homework as lecture so i like that. he base grading on class averages, so make sure u are in class with a bunch of stupid ppl and u r all set! jk but the test scores are usually lower than average, so everyone usually get a big curve
I took an intro. class with him over 10 years ago. In retrospect, he's one of the best teachers I've ever had. It was one of the hardest Cs this Dean's List student ever earned, but I EARNED it. His anecdotes about WWII and matrices helped me to understand some pretty tough stuff, and a decade later, I still remember it-- and know how to apply it!
Professor Hedman rulez.. take his class over the summer, had a pretty rough time making to class but its also almost impossible to fail during the break...
wicked hard tests that youll never finish..calc is way hard with him..his whole lecture is going over the homework and then spending the last 5 minutes teaching new material. good guy, but not the best prof.
Ok...., he is excellent at explaining stuff....like, seriously. he does a great job at going over the homework...i actually love the class personally....however, i have yet to take a test, so that just may change...(ive heard a lot of horror stories about the tests.) Great overall....and definitely very unique.

he is very clear at explaining things, but he also loves to scare his students
No Comments
He was very good professor, the only thing is his exams are very hard, and he scares us before the exams. But overall, I would recommend him. As he say "time flyes when you are having fun". He used to say this a few days before the exams!!!
Always available to answer questions and thoroughly explains answers
He is not that bad, but his grading system is rediculous. Your grade ONLY depends on who else is in your class, not on your performance. For example, say he had a small class of 5 people, and the lowest grade was a 75%, and all 4 others did better. That person would get an F instead of C. I ended up with a C in his class, but felt I deserved B.
terrible teacher. not willing to help anyone out to pass his class...i'm pretty sure he likes failing his students. he says "i love my job" when we do poorly on his exams.
"Math is fun" with prof. Hedman
math 115Q is not for slackers. if you want to get a good grade then you have to work a lot. he's a smart man and if you take the time and stay after he's willing to explain everything. but even if you know everything his exams are really hard. props to anyone who managed anything better than a C
awful awful evil human being...for your own sake, do not take this class
awful, horrible teacher. made my entire semster really bad. he is not helpful, he has no care or understanding for his students. he tells us that he needs some of us to fail. his students are just statistics to him. his grading is really bizzarre, your grade depends on the others in your class. so, if you have a smart class, you are screwed.
i took this class my 2nd semester after getting a C in his Math 115Q. i rarely showed up, and never opened the book and got an A. yes your grade does depend on the class...but if you actually try it's not that hard. he goes over all of the homework in class, and gives you study guides to the exams.
Best math teacher thus far.
I took math with Prof. hedman. he is the best in the campus and cares for the students. Yes his exams are hard, but if you know the concepts, it is just like a walk in the park. I was the only person in the whole class(27 students) to cross 80(87), as my overall. The next was around 65-70. "Time flies when you are having fun."
He goes over the hw for the whole class and then teaches something new for the last 15 min of class He uses a curve which hurts you especially in 115/116. However if you take his higher level math courses then you are all set because his curve for 210/211 is A-C. His tests are made extra long so that some1 will fail. He'll help u after class if req
Excellent professor, will go over anything multiple times in class if necessary. Best math teacher yet.
It is impossible to describe how boring the class is, each minute takes an hour to go by and i think in addition to repeating himself over and over he also speaks slowly in an atempt to fill the time. Class is a struggle to pay attention and what's worse is he pronounces the h in what and why, math 1070 is terrible
Very good instructor. May seem unreasonable at first with grading, however it all works out in for the best... Fair. Very Knowledgable, knows his stuff, makes every effort to help= Really teaches the subject well.
Hedmen is a good professor, but his teaching style is weird. If your in his first class, you'll do fine because he does the work on transparencies during the first class. He uses the same transparencies in his second class, so half the time his second class doesn't know whats going on. He's been teaching for a while, so he is pretty easy in grad
His teaching style IS weird. I wish he wouldve taught the material before we did the hw, and not do it in the last 5 mins of class. He actually told me, when I went for help, that it was his job to fail students so they dont get into w/e school @ Uconn. I ended up with a C+ because of the generous 50 pt. curves, but I'm still retaking it with DIAZ.
Very knowledgeable professor. By the far the most helpful and BEST math teacher I've ever had. And I'm serious.
Best professor i ever had. Fair in terms of grading because he has mentioned that Competition is what is vital in life. Therefore, people should not complain on his deviation policy if they do not study his notes or do the hw.He is very clear in discussing his math problems and offers help to all his students. Study your Hw thoroughly, your golden
Great!
If you value your sanity, don't take this class. He gives you homework, than, after you do it, he goes over the material. All the tests are made up of homework problems. His grading policy is such that half the class will pass with A's and B's while the other half has C's and D's. He failed his own daughter, so don't expect him to have remorse.
"Time flies when you're having fun." - Bruce Hedman
He's a good professor. He takes time to explain the problems and if you need help he's always there. If you do the homework, study and ask questions, you will get an A
Great professor, taught the material very clearly and effectively. Good personality. He's tough but fair and his exams are designed so that nobody will get a 100. You can get all the syllabi, study guides, and class curves from the previous semester on his web page: www.geocities.com/professorhedman "Time flies when your having fun"
This class is horrible. Unless you want to spend every day in the tutoring center, don't take this class. He goes over the homework the day it's due and never teaches it to you before hand. Therefore, you're at home looking at new material you've never seen before. He talks a lot about how he's getting paid either way;goes to show how much he cares
Professor Hedman performs his job of teaching mathematics excellently. His lectures are interesting and his exams are challenging, just the way it should be. If you allocate the proper amount of time to studying the material, you will do well. "Time flies when you're having fun"
Very clear, very effective teacher. Understands how to teach math, as he is very experienced in doing so. Tests are structured so that it is very difficult to get a perfect score, as there are many questions in a short time allotment. However, this is necessary as he grades on a true curve (avg. grade = C, top grade = A, worst grade = F).
Professor Hedman has a very good understanding of the material that he teaches, therefore, he explains it very effectively. His test questions are not hard but they are long. If you do the homework, then the test will not be difficult. Grades on a curve.
I've enjoyed this professor every semester i've had him. I really want to take differential equations with him if he offers it.
Great prof, extremely thorough, goes over all hmwk examples. He always has interesting stories to tell. You can do very well if u score higher than others on exam as he curves nicely.
He is really helpful and explains each problem thoroughly and is willing to answer any questions. The class itself is somewhat boring though because it's the same deal each class: turn off the lights, turn on the projector, do all the problems on the projector, take notes. Otherwise, he is an excellent teacher and he knows what he's doing.
Easy Class, just goes over homework, classnotes are essential and very helpful. Although i marked attendance mandatory, you can always go in class and take the class notes andjust copy them. He explains the text in a very clear fashion
Probably the best professor I ever had. He goes over the new material quickly but if you ask questions he will clarify. If you do homework and attend lectures you will be good. When he grades the exams, people above the average get A and B and below average get c, D and F.
Great math teacher!! He explains everything so clearly and goes over each homework problem so that everyone understands. Dont be afraid to ask questions he'll answer anything. Just make sure you do the homework problems and take down class notes they are essential. If you do all these things you should do great.
One of the best teachers. He explains everything.
Nice guy---but really boring much like his class.
I slowly stopped going to class all the time but somehow pulled a B+ from doing really well on the final. I would recommend going though because the classes that I did go to, I really learned and he was very clear when explaining. He has a very prestigious background. I like how he's a very proud bagpipe player lol
Great class. Dr. Hedman explains everything until he is sure that you understand. He is also very fair about his grading.
Excellent teacher. Difficult, bell curve tests are stressful. However, his class ensures a very high understanding of the material.
FYI: RARELY DID HOMEWORK, RARELY STUDIED, HATE MATH,ENDED W/ C, GOOD TEACHER, A IS POSSIBLE IF U STUDY AND DO ALL THE HW/ UR A SUPER GENIUS AT MATH, CURVES ALL GRADES, 2 MIDTERMS EACH 25% FINAL IS 50%,TESTS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE BUT CURVE COMPENSATES, NICE GUY OVERALL, RECOMENDED
Very funny guy if you actually listen to what he says. Most jokes fly right over peoples' heads but if you listen he is a riot. Very helpful when I needed extra help. At first was not understanding the material but after asking his help and doing the homework it was much easier. Overall, great guy, great class even though I hate math.
He made the class easier than it actually was because he made everything very clear! And his vests were AWESOME.
Curves a lot. Makes everything clear. Doesn't fail anyone unless they never show up or do extremely bad.
Awesome professor, doesn't get much better than this for math. Good math professors are hard to find. Do your hw and go to class. He goes over all hw in class. His curves help.
The BEST math professor. He does all of the math problems out, explaining them with detail. Total of 3 exams (25%, 25%, 50% of grade) No attendance taken. I never did the homework, but listened in class, and did well on the exams. I strongly RECOMMEND Hedman!
I usually hate and struggle with math, but he made Calc I interesting, painless and fun for me! He's one of the best profs I've ever had! He always takes time to answer Q, and he always made sure he understood your Q before answering. Explanations are clear & he'll tell u how calc applies to the real world to keep u interested!
Definitely one of the best professors in the University. I have struggled and done poorly on every math class before taking his class. His way of teaching takes in account for poor math-backgrounds, and attempts to resolve and strengthen them. If you study well and take notes- you will do well in the class.
Great professor, but confusing at times. Enjoys what he is doing, that matters.
Here's the deal with hedman. He doesn't teach the material well, but he does curve exams. As long as your confident that your smarter than the rest if the class this will be an easy A or B. A 10.5/25 for me curved to about a B. However you won't actually learn the material in his class. So do you want to learn calc or get an easy A or B? Take zhu
Prof Hedman is a good teacher, very clear and funny. His tests are not easy, but they're curved. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you better go to every class if you want an A. The book for 1070q SUCKS. If you don't go to class you'll probably get a D. HW is done out of the book every class. Very little lecturing. Great Prof, bad book, OK class.
Great teacher, if you show up to class he will make sure you learn. You will know the information for the exams. There are no surprises in his class. Very straight forward.
He's cocky, and annoying. But he knows what he's doing. His exams are impossible but the curves save your life. If you take it with him, you'll have to go to class and put up with his personality. He's sinister. But he's clear and thorough, which is what you need most in a math professor.
Dr. Hedman was the best math professor I''ve had in my three years of college. He is wicked funny and super helpful. Make sure you do the homework and ask him any questions you have. The tests are hard but he curves so much that you''ll do fine.
Teaching style outdated uses overhead projector for all lectures. Only 3 exams in the class which usually have a HUGE curve on them. Each question on exam worth 3-4 points and his partial credit is 0.5 points. Very fast paced without a whole lot of explanation.
Material is difficult even though he teaches much better than other professors. His exams are the hardest exams you will ever take. If you get an D on an exam, it usually curves to around a B. Don't panic if you feel like you failed, everyone else did too. He is helpful when you ask him for help but i wish the material and his exams were easier!
Teaches the material well. Huge curves on the exam help but it is still hard to get an A although a C is pretty easy to accomplish.
Great professor. Goes over many problems on the overhead to assure everything is clear. There are only 3 exams. The first 2 aren't bad because they're only on a month's material but the final is a little tough because it's cumulative. If you have questions, ask. He will go out of his way to help you. I bought the book but used it once. Recommend!
Master Bruce is the best Math professor I've ever encountered. Not only does he explain and use multiple examples for reviewing homework, and going into new sections, but he will take the time to thoroughly explain any sort of question a student has. Also, it doesn't hurt to listen to one of his CD's on the left wall of the classroom at WeHa.
Impossible to do the homework he assigns the night he assigns it. He is very unclear and goes through material quickly. His tests are impossible to complete, and you will most likely fail them without the curve. However, his curves are MASSIVE. He designs his tests knowing that all his students will fail.
His criteria was simple Each of the two exams are 25% of your final grade and the final is worth 50% of your overall grade. If you skip the first 2 exams he will make the final out of 100%. His curve brought me (3rd in the class with a 59% overall) to an A-, the lowest passing grade was a 21% giving that student a C-.
Bruce is honestly a great guy all around. Pretty much all examples come from the book, he teaches new material at a reasonable speed and explains thoroughly. Every section has assigned hw (not checkedgraded) but he does out all hw problems in class. He does curve a lot and you wont pass without it! Very willing to stop lecture to answer questions!
The class consists of him doing every homework problem out on the board, which is extremely helpful as you can ask him to clarify anything. Three exams, 25%25%50%. Major curve, if you even remotely know what to do you will pass.
Great teacher
Great teacher very clear and helpful.
Such an amazing teacher and a great guy. I cant see how someone wouldnt like him, since hes so respectable and does his best to help you understand. Theres no judgement when questions are asked, unlike some teachers Ive met, even when the questions seem stupid. A lot of ppl have rearranged their schedules just to get him again. Gotta love Bruce
Just took first calc2 midterm today. I am a 4.0 gpa student and it was unfair. He gives exams where he intentionally doesn't want you to finish on time. Even though I knew how to solve every problem, ink just doesn't go on paper that fast. Something this prof does not understand. The curve is based off class. Class average is bad high curve.
Hedman is the man when it comes to math!! The entire lecture consists of going over problems and he goes through each one very slowly so its VERY easy to understand each step. On exams he gives more questions than you can finish on purpose-just do as many as you can. He curves relative to each class average, so if you go to class you'll be fine.
Hedman is a great professor who knows how to explain the material clearly. Tests are hard, since there are lots of tricky questions in a short amount of time. He curves tests though, so even if you know some of the material you will pass. I would definitely recommend Hedman.
To get an A in the class you must be at the top of the curve and get as many points as possible the point matter more than anything. 3 exams. Exam 1 out of 25, Midterm out of 25, and final is out of 50 pts. Make sure u practice as many practice problems and time yourself depending on wat he covers. The guide is only a GUIDE, don't depend on it.
Professor Hedman is great at what he does. He explains evrything in such a clear, fluid way. He is also very approachable and extremely knowledgeable in his subject. You MUST do the homework before class instead of not doing it and copying down the answers he explains in class. Do the homework, come to class, study the material and you'll be fine.
Professor Headman's class consists of doing the assigned Homework and him explaining the Homework. Every class he teaches he only grades 2 Mid Terms and a Final. Homework is optional BUT really mandatory beaus if you don't do the homework you wont you wont understand what he doing in class. Also all of the classes he teaches are MWF
He doesn't let you use a calculator. He e-mails or posts the notes from class which is just the homework assignments. Tests are weird and sometimes confusing because he doesn't let you use calculators he makes you solve a theoretical problem rather than actually plugging in numbers and getting the correct answers.
Grade depends entirely on exams. Homework is gone over during lecture but it's up to you whether you want to do it. I'd really recommend it though because it's the best practice you have for your exams. It's also borderline impossible to finish his exams, but he writes good ones and curves the heck out of them. He also loves Celtic trad music.
Goes pretty fast, ask questions.
The only class where you can skip every single lecture and still get an A. Study all the problems yourself from the book and you would end up saving time. He posts all the HW problems solved online and as long as you understand every single one of them you would ace the 3 exams which are your only grade.
Have to teach yourself, he ONLY discusses homework, exams are presented differently compared to how it's taught
Theres 3 exams that determines your whole grade: first midterm, second midterm, and final exam. He grades by points so you dont have to do good on all three. Whoever has the most points at the end is an A to whoever has the least number of points (combined from all the exams at the end) gets an F. He curves a lot but the lectures are kinda boring
If you skip any of the homework he assigns to you, you are already behind weeks of where he wants you to be. His tests consists of the harder questions of the text book stuff he gives you. Lectures consists of him doing problems on the board and when he tells you whats gonna be on the exam it is unclear and vague.
Don't take him for calculus if you don't like learning by yourself because that's what you're left with. Lectures are pointless. He does hw problems on the board and you're just expected to understand the concepts despite only being given very specific examples of said concepts. He only grades the 3 tests you're given and there isn't enough time.
Worst math professor ive ever had at Uconn. Please do yourself a favor and do not take him. Not worth it. Take it with a harder professor, who would actually care about your grade.
I had him during COVID period so my experience might be different from others but it was good. He explained the math concepts very well and easy for me to understand. He graded only on 4 midterms spread throughout the entire course, so there is no small assignments to boost your grade up. Overall, I'm glad he was my professor.
Bruce Hedman was overall an average teacher. The only way to pass the class is if you attend class and watch his lectures videos, otherwise you won't understand anything that is going on. The teacher expects you to know things and grades only on 4 midterms throughout the whole semester. No required homework, but it is necessary to pass the class.
He is a nice professor and would recommend him. Send an email for the pdf version of the textbook which is free. The exams follow the exact same template as the study guides and the first two exams are straightforward but I thought the final was pretty unfair with what seemed like the toughest questions he could find. Class is graded on the curve.
the entire class grade is 3 exams, 2 midterms and the cumulative final exam, he grades based on a curve. For the exams try to answer as many as you can, the exams are set to be able to finish all the questions. Attendance isnt mandatory. He has all the classes recorded on blackboard
he is a funny guy and a okay teacher (does alot of things in his head), however pretty basic calc but you must watch his videos if you dont go to lecure or you will be screwed. graded only by 3 exams weighted heavily. exams are half hard half easy-ish. class is graded by a curve so hope you're the smartest kid there.
Overall this is a good class. It is difficult but as long as you put in the effort you should do well. Professor Hedman is a fair teacher and is willing to work with you with any questions. He gives good feedback after the tests. You are graded on only 3 test but grades on a curve.
2 midterms, 1 final. The only curve that matters is the one he gives at the end. He curves everyone's cumulative number of points. For example: you got 50 total points across 2 midterms and 1 final, you get an A. You got 20 pts, probably a B or C. Can't recommend him enough, especially for people who just want to pass Calc for major requirements
Class is graded on two midterms and a final which consist of a total of 100 points and is curved.
Professor Hedman was a great professor. There is homework to do before each class, but it's not graded, it's more just for your own good. The class itself is graded by two midterms (25%) and the final (50%) and he grades on a heavy curve, which is super nice. Attendance isn't mandatory but you probably won't pass if you don't show up.
Get ready to self-teach yourself all the material. Great person and really knowledgable but he isn't that great at teaching the material. At times it becomes so unclear and so confusing. There isn't any assignments except doing textbook questions which he never checks. There are two midterms and one final which are curved. He is so sweet though.
Professor Hedman is easily one of the best math professors here at UConn. He explains the concepts in such a beautiful manner. He is very easy to understand and a great teacher. I highly recommend taking him because you will see math in a different way. He also curves your grades and the tests are not very difficult.
Does not post anything online, so must go to class. Final grade is based on 2 midterms (25%x2) and a final (50%). No makeups on midterms, if you miss one, the points are added to your final. Very nice guy, straightforward class, but exams are very hard and no one ever scores high unless they're retaking the class. Curve goes super crazy though.
Lectures can feel long, but the professor is pretty chill and funny at times. Get ready to study because the tests are the only things that will be added to your grade! Professor Hedman gives partial points on tests, and as long as you do your homework and study a bit, you'll be good.
The way this class is graded is purely test based. 25% of your grade is the first midterm, and 25% is second. 50% is the final. Lectures can feel long, but that's just calculus- the prof is pretty chill and funny at times. As long as you study a bit and do homework, you can pass with the generous curve and partial points given.
Lectures can drag, but Professor Hedman has a cool, casual vibe. Tests are the main focus, so study the textbook problems and use Unstuck study for extra practice - it really helps with the generous curve.
When it comes to teaching, you're not going to get much better in my opinion. Lectures were super clear and he's great at answering questions. Very test heavy (25/25/50) but there is a generous curve. Homework not required, but most the lectures are going over homework problems. Material was difficult, but Professor Hedman was great.
Bruce Hedman is very passionate about math. But his teaching methods involves going over homework all class. And when he does give a lecture, he goes fast and does few examples. But when he does, gives very clear explanations for things. So if you study good by yourself he's an excellent professor
Passionate about mathematics with a big knack for geometry and geometrical proofs. Great professor if you can teach yourself, but otherwise strap in, as you are only graded by 3 tests, each with good odds you won't finish because of the difficulty and the time constraint you have. The counter to these is a curve that goes in your favor.
Professor Waddles does exactly that—waddles around campus instead of teaching. Lectures are pointless, guidance is nonexistent, and somehow, they make learning more confusing. If you're looking to learn absolutely nothing, this is the class for you. Graded on 3 things, he doesn't teach but just shows and expects you to use it instantaneously.
If you want to learn Calculus 2 without spending tens of hours each week re-teaching it to yourself DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Also, the entire class is graded on a curve, and half the class cheats using ChatGPT which makes it nearly impossible to compete with. Please, for the love of god, do not take this professor. Do yourself a favor.
Doesn't do a lot of teaching, just does problems one by one, you will definitely need to use outside sources to properly learn the material, which can make going to class feel pointless sometimes. There is a curve; however, lots of heads cheat, so it'll be somewhat skewed
Amazing but can improve his teaching methods
This professor was not useful whatsoever. This class was basically watching him solve problems from the expensive textbook with little to no real-time commentary. Questions don't get answered, and instead just re-demonstrated with another problem. If you don't like textbook-style questions, skip this one. You will need to teach yourself.
Basically If you have a skill to teach yourself then I will recommend having him, no doubt he has a good knowledge but still he can improve his teaching skills cuz a 18,19 year old doesn't have the same brain as he got my practicing again and again. he needs to learn that how to teach students that's all.
Great professor!! , The classes well feel difficult if you don't study at home and never open up your notes. If you do your home work, study from textbooks then it wont be that tough.
Amazing professor !!!, Because of his age sometimes he makes small mistake but he is very kind and accept that and moves on. he has great knowledge only you need to study daily and practice some extra question from the book he has given then no one would be able to beat you in calculus. It needs practice and thatʼs all !!!
Please avoid if you can, only good thing is that he curves heavy. there is literally no point on going to class because you have to take notes at home, do the homework, and in class he just corrects the homework. there are only 3 exams, which are your only grades, but he does a curve. the way he teaches doesnt work w this type of class.please avoid
Avoid this class at all costs. Everyone cheats on the exams so it's impossible to compete with them and get a good grade. People bring 2 phones, use chatgpt, etc and mess up the curve for others.
