A good professor but sometimes asks for deliberatly obscure information and is very, very detail oriented on exams.
Avoid this professor. His lectures are terrible, his tests are on obscure material, and is very condiscening towards his students.
Dr. Hofkin is one of those professors who students either love or hate. You know a prof is good when his students say it was one of their hardest classes, but they loved it. You will learn alot from Bruce, but he is very demanding. Not for the lazy.

Ridiculously fabulous professor. Also writes great reccomendation letters if he gets to know you and you do well in the class. All you have to do is read the book and know the details...it's not that hard if you study!
Compared to the other Bio profs, Hofkin goes out of his way to ensure you have a good grasp on the material. Very detail oriented, but that's b/c he believes in you knowing the mechanism of stuff to really understand it

Hofkin is a terrible teacher. His lectures do not follow the material that is presented on the tests and he is not willing to listen to students. He has favorites and treats them better than the rest of the class

I took this class over the summer and my grade deffinetly reflected how much I put into it. Dr. Hofkin is an interesting and easy going professor. He loves to chat with his students about all fields of biology and is very friendly. If you are a slacker who doesn't like to study and are just trying to to the minimum to get by..don't take his class.
He taught the second half of the course. He was a much better lecturer than the prof. who taught the first half (Altenbach). Good way of explaining things and related concept to real world situations which kept it interesting Tests were not that bad, got a B in the class. He yelled at girl in class once (but she was annoying). Otherwise seems nice.
This class is really not that hard, especially if you've attended a private college. In reality it is a breeze in comparision. He is the first teacher in a LONG time to even care what information goes in your head. I've come out of this class knowing more than I have from classes that I was even more interested in taking, even at 8AM in the summe
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. I showed up to every class and took good notes, but still only got D's on the exams. make sure you own a taperecorder because the whole class, exams and hw, is based soley on the lecture, noting from the book. So listen closley. He's the type of guy who refuses to give A's. He made a comment the 68% was exactly what he
I thought the lectures seemed clear so I was suprised when I did so poorly on the test. His tests were extremely detail-oriented and based entirely on little details from the lectures.

Hofkin definitely knows his stuff, but he doesn't test you on what he teaches. The tests were horribly worded and seemed designed specifically to trick you. I worked really hard in this class but the tests hurt my grade. Also, the grading on the tests is very iffy--and it's difficult to improve your grade in the course-total is three exam grades.
You MUST take EXTREMELY good notes, but even this is not enough. It was a very difficult but interesting class. I put in hours and hours of studying time. Study groups will help. Overall, he's a really good professor who really wants you to learn the material. Clear up any confusion asap to avoid struggling later.
he really know his stuff, but he doesn't know how to ask question. The tests are really confusing. I took good notes and read the text book, and still I couldn't underestand what he wants.
Dr. Hofkin is one of the best biology professors at UNM. If you have the opportunity to take his class then I would strongly recommend it. The class can be difficult if you don't study but as long as you put in effort you should be fine. The wording might be difficult but it prepares you for harder classes. Lectures are extremely interesting.
Write down every single example, detail, word that comes out of his mouth because it will show up on the test!
Dr. Hofkin is still one of my favorite professors at UNM. He is infinitely knowledgeable on the subject of cell biology. His lectures are extremely interesting. You can tell he knows what he's talking about because he never used notes for lectures. His exams ask about small details, but test genuine knowledge of the subject.
Of all the professors Ive had at my 4 years here professor Hofkin was by far the worst. He picks favorites, and even if you take great notes, read the text and go to every class chances are you will barely pass since he will test you on things he said he wouldn't. I highly highly dislike him and don't recommend him to anyone.
This guy is horrible! His tests or ridicules and so is the homework. No one can understand a word that he says. He is never clear about what is important or not.
Professor Hofkin ha sa lot of knowledge but his goal is to not let you make A's. He thinks in weeding out people. Also spent a lot of time teling what are we going to cover in the next lecture and jumps between topics.
Don't expect to get an A on anything without harassing your TA about minutiae for homework and tests. I literally memorized every rxn in the TCA cycle; wouldn't have been able to get all the answers on exam without it (memorization of the cycle wasn't even recommended). Hofkins definitely goes by the "weed out" philosophy of instructing.
I LOVE LOVE LOVED him as a professor. He mad lecture fun by teaching outside of the box. He would teach very interesting fact about the information being covered. I had to work very hard in the class and the homework was not interesting. However, it was challenging which made his class more fun. It's college it should be hard! I loved his class
Good enthusiasm. A little hard to keep up with note taking, but very clear lecturer. If you attend class and take notes, there is no reason you shouldn't get an A
Professor Hofkin is an amazing lecturer. He goes straight through, doesn't look at notes, encourages questions, and emphasizes what is really important. His tests are 100% off his lectures. Go to class, pay attention, and don't be afraid to approach him. He's really nice one on one and really cares about what you learn. I've loved this class!
Highly recomment Hofkin! He's energetic when teaching the material & you will not fall asleep, instead your actually wanting to know more. Tests are right off his lecture, so you should attend! Friendly and willing to help you, he also incorporates real life medical examples if interested in medical field. Be smart and take Hofkin! Good luck!
Great teacher! Very clear and engaging during lectures. DO NOT miss class! It is very important that you study (a lot) and come to class prepared.
He is a great instructor, and his greatest attributes are his clarity and enthusiasm. He hits all the big stuff, but definitely maintains the rigors of biological details. He does NOT have the god complex that some professor have. He is open to different perspectives on the material covered. I cannot say enough about him. Just excellent.
He was harder than the first half of the semester that was Dr. Cunningham. His tests are not clear so ask if you don't know what the question is asking.
Horrible prof. Just zooms through everything, won't help you if you ask for it... Lectures are hard to understand, he spends most of the time bouncing around rather than actually teaching
I thought he was great! The lectures were very entertaining and interesting. I didn't think his tests were too bad. You will do well in the class if you put effort into it.
Great Lecturer, speaks with great clarity and wants you to do well. Tests are kinda tough, but just stay up with the material covered in class, read and TAKE GOOD NOTES! =)
Dr. Hofkin is an energetic and entertaining lecturer. He reminds me of a Hobbit. His knows his stuff and is very willing to help students. However, he gives few resources for learning the material other than lecture. He is easy to follow but hard to take notes from, and that is the most important part. It makes studying for his tests very difficult
Dr. Hofkin's Immunology class is the best class I've taken at UNM. His tests are very challenging but the best way to study is from class notes. Make sure to take very detailed notes on what he says in class, not just what he writes on the board or puts on slides.
Material seems simple in class, only with Dr. Hofkin's impossible tests the material in complicated. He is really hard to take notes from and he expects you to know every little detail. Though he is a very good lecturer, he is a weed-out professor.
I agree with anyone saying this is hard class but the teacher himself said it would be hard. Cunningham was really good. But hofkin ruined it. My Ta was Angela Hung. She made it worse also . She graded too hard and she was rude and ****. Peace out Angela you know who I am. Hahahaha
Cunnigham rocked but hofkin ruined it
great lecturer but his tests make it almost impossible to pass.if you want to go to med school take this class with him otherwise wait!!acts a bit condescending and the effort and hard work put into this class was unquestionably not reflected in the grades.numerous hard working classmates had to retake the course.
Bruce Hofkin, by far, is the best professor I have had at UNM. I have been here for 3 years now. I plan to take every course at this school that he teaches. He is extremely clear in his lectures and does not ask exam questions on anything that was not mentioned in class. You need to be a good listener in class, but if you can do that you have an A.
Prof. Hofkin is one of the best Bio teachers i have had for both 200 and 400 level biology. he is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and is willing to help if you ask. He is a weed out professor though so his class is not easy! you will have to be able to take good notes and dedicate the time to study, but it is not impossible to get an A.
Great speaker who holds your interest. Asks challenging questions, but the answers are all in his lectures. Take awesome notes and have a wonderful time conceptualizing biology rather than memorizing discontinuous facts. You can totally get an A. Take every class under his tutelage. You will be head and shoulders above your peers.
If you're really interested in learning biology, great professor to take it from. All the bad comments about him is because they decided not to study for the test and/or not interested in biology. His tests are tough so you better be ready for the test. Learn the notes throughlly but he never put anything he didn't cover in class in the test.
Here's the truth: It is a challenging class, but one of the most interesting. The reason people can't handle his tests is because it's called application of concepts rather than simple regurgitation. Although there were a few questions that were kinda knit picky. He will definitely captivate your attention, though.
Best bio professor I have ever had. Work can be difficult sometimes but he is always helpful with it. I would definitely recommend his classes.
Hofkin's lectures are a little slow for my tastes (in bio 201 at least), but he does a good job of making the material easy to comprehend. Good, organized lectures. tests are rough, but only because he asks you to apply and critically think about the topics covered in class; if you take the time to really understand the material, you will do fine.
Hofkin is a brilliant instructor and definitely knows the material he's teaching. His exams are challenging, but for the subjects he teaches, they should be. You must attend the lectures and take meticulous notes, but as long as you have solid notes, you're golden for the tests. An A is achievable with the right amount of effort.
Relatively entertaining lecturer. But, often discrepancies and confusion between his lectures and textbook reading. He teaches some things, but leaves out others, and there is a lot of connecting the dots on your own. Homework and tests follow the same pattern, and can be challenging - and frustrating. Not my favorite teacher, but better than most.
I had Dr. Hofkin for biology 201 and 202. Great lecturer, always voted so in the biology department. He was clear on what he expected from his students. Can be distracting at times by sitting on the table criss-crossed.
I've had Dr.Hofkin for all but two of my biology courses at UNM. I absolutely love him! He is a wonderful lecturer and a really interesting person. People on here are saying his tests are hard, which is true, but they need to remember they are in college. Attendance and good notes are mandatory to do well in the class. I've made As so its possible
Tests are hard, the ONLY teacher I know that will not let you withdraw with a WP. If you are not doing well, he says ok I will have to give you an F though. His tests are ridiculously hard for a 201 class. AVOID, trust me.
Probably the best professor I've ever had. Got an A in this class, and to anyone who is constantly disrespecting him on here it's probably because he called your ass out while you were texting in class. Good professor, recommend it, if you don't like him you shouldn't be a bio major/pre-health/scientist.
Dr. Hofkin is a great lecturer and an interesting person. He is very enthusiastic and draws students into the lectures. His tests are not easy, but with good notes you should do fine. He is my favorite professor and I highly recommend him!
A large section of his tests are fill in the blank sentences with no word bank, and you get points off if you even spell something wrong. He told my friend who was asking for help that if biology was easy there would be no one to work at 7/11, and that she just isn't studying enough. I would not recommend him.
His lectures are interesting, but very disorganized. Contradicts what the book has to say a lot and what was learned in chemistry. The tests are basically different forms of the homework questions. And he isn't very helpful if you go to his office hours. You definitely have to attend lectures to understand.
Hate him! Avoid.
Dr. Hofkin is great! His ability to bring the lecture to life is what kept me in class. He will ask questions in his lecture that are on the exams, so listen closely and take detailed notes. Also, his exams include material from the textbook and also from lecture. It would not be a good idea to miss his class without getting the notes from someone.
The best teacher I've had at UNM. Yes, his tests are harder than other teachers in the department. But you also learn more. He applies his lectures directly to medical/health sciences fields. He can also be quite funny at times. if you go to class, take notes, and do the homework, there won't be any nasty surprises.
Great teacher with difficult tests. You just have to really pay attention and know lots of details about the material to get an A.
Hofkin's tests and homeworks are very difficult. He is a very good teacher though and explains each concept very thoroughly. He does not deliver his lectures through slides though, so you have to write down whatever he says.
Dr. Hofkin was an excellent professor. He is into his lectures and you can tell he loves his job. He makes the class interesting. The exams can be challenging but if you take notes, he will cover absolutely everything you need to know. Enjoyable and interesting class.
Only had Dr. Hofkin for the second half of the semester, but in that short time he worked wonders. Learned so much once he took over. Exams are hard, but worth the effort.
Hofkin is a really hard teacher, but it's totally worth it. During the class I was struggling to keep up and felt like I was getting nothing, but talking to him and just studying lecture notes makes it all come together. I have a way better understanding of biology now.
Dr. Hofkin is awesome. He knows invertebrates really well and as long as you take good notes and read you'll be fine. His lectures are super detailed and informative without being boring. Great professor.
Lectures are too long and super boring. Bruce doesn't speak up so good luck trying to hear if you are not in one of the first few rows. Homeworks assignments are long 10 short answer questions with at least 5 parts each. Material is sometimes hard to grasp but office hours unhelpful unless you have a specific question to ask.
I wouldn't say that Hofkin a good lecturer. Very very very little he teaches is from the text so if you skip, you fail. His lectures are all over the place. So it is hard to take notes. I don't know if it is true if his average grade is an A. The class average for exam 3 was a 40%. I would recommend taking this course at CNM over UNM. Trust me.
Very much all over the place. He has no lecture notes, no power points, no external or home reference. Please pay attention to the last statement, he doesn't teach a thing from the text, so you can't study references at home and the text wont help. Everything you will need to know comes from his mouth. But some things he states is actually wrong.
Hofkin taught the 2nd half. He was good at 1st but over time, his lectures were more and more random and not coherent. It would be nice if he stuck with the text more or had lecture notes. But he has neither of these. He rushes though important topics not in the text, which makes studying at home from your notes harder than normal. No extra credit.
It's hard to understand how he's still teaching.A lot of what he says is wrong. Little taught corresponds with the text and looking up material that he states shows that the majority of experts would say he is wrong. He should just stick with the text but he doesn't. He strays a lot, and again, incorrect material floods his lectures-beware.
Hofkin was a good, incredibly knowledgeable professor. However, his teaching strays much from the book. Also, his test are extremely conceptual and tricky. Getting higher than a B+ on his exams is difficult. He talks quietly and goes on tangents sometimes. I advise paying much attention, doing all the homework, then ask a lot of questions.
Dr. Hofkin is a great teacher. He knows a lot about invertebrates, and is obviously passionate about the material. He has high standards, and expects students to work hard to meet them. His tests are tough, but well structured, and fair. His lectures follow the textbook, and he points out material to focus on when studying for tests.
Bruce has a great teaching style. He always asks questions to the class and truly has a passion for what he's teaching. He's a very nice guy but a hard teacher. READ TO SAVE YOUR LIFE, write down everything he says, and make sure to do the hw because he gives no practice tests. Just work hard and he's approachable
Hofkin is a knowledgeable professor and very interesting to listen to. Although you have to pay attention in class, if you thoroughly understand the material, you will do well on the difficult exams. In addition, if you go to his office hours he's willing talk to you about anything from class material to information about graduate school.
The God of lectures.
Despite Virology being one of the most difficult classes of my undergraduate career, it was also my favorite. Dr. Hofkin goes right into the material from day-one, detailed lectures, and rarely dwells. He presents the information but expects students to think critically about different diseases with the same concept on exams.
Very good at describing material, this is my second time taking this class and with Dr. Hofkin I finally understood the material and had an interest for it vs my last professor. Loved his lectures, try and go to all of them as they'll clarify things for you and a few questions on the hw and tests that are lecture-specific
His lectures were always engaging and interesting. He always tied the material to a case study or some kind of medical condition that made the concepts stick and he always made it a point to check our understanding throughout lecture and address questions. Very willing to help and motivated to see his students succeed and learn the concepts well.
Dr. Hofkin's lectures were the best part of this course. He knows how to keep you engaged while learning the material. Take good notes because many of the small details he lectures on appear on his tests, which can be challenging especially if you don't show up to class. His homework assignments can be quite involved too, but it helps you learn.
Great professor! Only complaint is he didn't teach the whole semester. Very clear lectures, just take diligent notes and show up to class. Usually tries to include examples or case studies to make the concepts easier to understand. Funny guy, knows what he's talking about. Exams and homework are difficult, but if you pay attention aren't too bad!
Dr. Hofkin is terrible at being an instructor. He knows the material but cannot write exams or homework at all. The question wording is a mess and you will constantly be confused by his exams and homework. He isn't available to students and is not happy to help. His lectures are not helpful for exams and he chooses minor things to test on.
Good guy and good lecture, his tests are crazy and confusing though
He's very clear and organized in lecture. He tells you exactly what you need to know. Go to lecture! Look back on the homework assignments as a means to prep for the test because the questions are very similar!
GO TO CLASS. His exams are based of his lectures & sometimes he hints what kinds of questions he'll ask on the exam. Use the homework as study guides when studying for the exams & take advantage of the lab time where your TA can help you if you don't understand stuff from the lecture. So, just go to class & pay attention & you'll pass.
Absolutely amazing lectures, you learn a lot. Quizzes cover book chapters, articles and lectures, and anything mentioned is fair game and I mean ANYTHING, he's very specific on answers he wants and on questions so make sure you know it forwards and back. No extra credit and no dropped grades. A tough class but very much worth your time.
Class was co thought and his portion was a lot harder than (Loker) the other professor. Also, offered very little help and always seemed annoyed compared to his colleague. He is very specific in what he wants you to know, way too specific for the amount of material covered, biochem was very hard but attainable, but this class was pointlessly hard.
Hofkin gives fascinating lectures, but unfortunately, his exams are nothing like the material he presents in class. The exam questions are entirely theoretical, and they are written confusingly, so it is difficult to understand what is even being asked. He is rude when you ask him to clarify and constantly goes on tangents about his interests.
Prof. Hofkin is great! Be expected to apply your knowledge on tests rather than just memorize everything word for word. Always make sure you have every detail from his lectures as he heavily tests on that material and not so much from the book. He repeats often to make things clear and gives great tools for studying.
Hofkin gives amazing lectures and makes the class go by so quickly. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want to pass his intense exams you NEED to go and take good notes. He hints a lot at what kinds of questions will be on exams. 4 exams, one drop, 75% of your grade and involve a lot of being able to explain/ short answers. Other 25% is lab.
Dr. Hofkin is a great lecturer but this is all he does. Be ready to pay close attention to everything he says because almost all of it will show up on his tests. Go to class, read the text, and do your homework and you'll pass. Very passionate about students staying off of their phones so don't get caught!
Prof Hofkin is a great Lecturer. The class was very interesting and enjoyable. Tip for this class is recording the lectures. Its very helpful to listen to them again because almost all of the material you'll be tested on comes from them.
He is a good professor but there is too much information on one test. Says you don't have to know things for the test but if you don't you loose points. He's way better than shaner though
Hofkin is very intimidating and lecture heavy. Take note in everything he says, and go to office hours (every time their available) if possible. The class itself is difficult and he teaches as such, and I failed the course because of that. Be ready to study your butt off. I can guarantee if you don't go to class, you will fail or do very poorly.
Hofkin gives amazing lectures, but unfortunately, his exams are horrible. They are nothing like the notes given in class. The questions are theoretical. Plus, he has this grudge against students who cheat and takes it out on the entire classes grading. Took this class again with Howe and got an A. Save yourself the agony and dont take this class.
I liked Hofkin, he is good at explaining concepts and lectures at an even pace. He does have a problem with cell phones that is a little extreme, like he will kick you out of the classroom if he sees you on your cell phone. I don't like using mine during class, so it wasn't an issue for me. I'd take him again.
Professor Hofkin was a good lecturer. With that being said, his exams were horrible. Everything he goes over is perfectly easy to understand, but when it comes to exams I was completely lost. The way the questions are formatted and worded just confuses you. My only advice would be: READ YOUR TEXTBOOK!
Dr. Hofkin is an amazing lecturer, and everything he discusses in these lectures is easy to understand and makes sense. His lectures leave you feeling prepared for exams. However, his exams are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. Our class average on exams ranged from 30-40%. This is the first class I have EVER failed in my entire college career. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Hofkin seems jaded and tired of teaching this class. Lectures are good but a little disorganized when trying to take it all down. Rewrite your notes if you do get stuck with him. Grading is poorly weighted. If you have an SI leader, USE THEM. They will help you succeed since the TA's haven't taken this course in awhile and rusty on the material
Biology is hard, but Hofkin is a great professor! Exams are difficult so establish study groups. Attend lectures and if you're lost ask! He answers all questions in or outside of class! Very passionate about his work and his lectures are always the best!
Hofkin lectures well, he chooses what you'll learn so don't expect to read the textbook to much. He has the philosophy A's are very rare, so he contreus nasty tests. Want to pass record lectures and go over word for word what he says and try to understand the concept so when he asks a total left feild question you might know. Take Howe easier A.
Doctor Hofkin lectures well and knows how to present material in a way that makes complex concepts understandable. Unfortunately, all this does is give you a false sense of security for his exams. You leave class feeling prepared to study and show up to exams to be railroaded. Best of luck!
He is an great biology professor and actually knows what he is taking about. You will definitely learn from him. But test are difficult and they are worth 75% of your grade. To say it all, this class was why I gave up on going to medical school. It is possible to pass but only if you focus on it. Make sure to use all resources available to you.
The lectures are good as he is an articulate professor. He grades off quizzes mostly. It's necessary to make sure you take good notes and not just what is written on the board.
Not a great professor, isn't really concerned whether his class average is low or high, and doesn't give any extra credit to try and help students out. Expects only specific answers on exams when the answer could be various amount of things, and sometimes isn't accurate with the discussion/lab.
His lectures are absolutely awesome! However, his exams do not match the lectures, and not the textbook either. He expects extremely precise answers on the exams, and does not curve exams/ no extra credit. His exams were the hardest I have ever dealt with!
Dr. Hofkin does not care about his students. He is very short in his responses, and worse in office hours. He believes this class is all that students needs to focus on. He tests very heavily on information that he said maybe once, minute details rather than slightly larger. Would recommend anyone to NOT take this class.
Does not give feedback as to why you got certain grades on homework and exams. Will give you a 0 for any late work, non-negotiable (even if it's submitted 1 min late). Exams are all written and he wants SPECIFIC answers. If not then your whole answer is marked wrong. no extra credit, no curves, no mercy. AWFUL PROFESSOR.
Dr. Hofkin is a solid professor. He is very organized and prompt, and does not assign a lot of work. There is one homework assignment per week and 4 tests per semester, and that is it. His lectures are very solid, although he was often bad at responding to emails. Still a decent choice, especially compared to Dr. Kennedy.
No. Just no. You have to be born a scientist to do well on his tests. I hated this class and it made me switch majors. I have never studied so much for an exam only to either never improve after the exam before, or do worse. I cant understand how people passed his exams. The lab helps your grade but,if youre not a natural born test taker good luck
