He gives very interesting lectures and all assignments are essays
Schulman is a god - has by far best classes at BU

He is very very knowledgable about his field, and is very interesting
Great professor - Never bored in his courses!
very passionate about his work -- makes lecture interesting
2nd semester I've had him, lectures almost always interesting, uses media well

The man. Awesome topic, awesome class, awesome teacher. Very fair. Nice guy.
Great professor, interesting lectures. Class is very biased: liberal viewpoint.
Awesome lectures,& he puts on his bell bottoms...what more could you want?
Best class at BU. Schulman makes it so fun and interesting

He is my favorite professor that Ive ever had at BU!!
Best lecturer I had at BU. I graduated and am going to sneak in on a class!
Greatest lecturer EVER! After each one, I wanted to give a standing ovation.
The best class I've taken. I never missed a class. He was amazing
one of the best classes i've ever taken, definitely take it - if you can get in
Apparently I'm the only one who thought this guy was a complete ass. Definitely the most arrogant professor I've ever had. I think he loved his own words like they were gospel. He got too much favor by turning his class into pop culture hour.
This man is a lunatic.Funny.Loved the props. But a lunatic.Trails off at the end of sentences.Read lectures verbatum...I'd rather you just email it to me.Painfully obvious that he just wants to be a narrator/director for the History Channel.Change jobs.
Great lecturer, take his class if you can get in. Incredibly humerous.
Awesome class. Lectures are really cool. I was upset when I missed one. He plays music and uses video clips all the time. Very organized man. Knows his stuff. And he's funny. Great class. If you don't take it, you'll miss out on some good times.
Schulman incorporates pop culture into the lectures which is a nice change of pace; Brilliant guy but aloof; He's on sabbatical next yr...needs a break, was off his game this semester a bit; wasnt as sharp as when I had him in the fall of 2000 for HI 364
Great, clear professor. Did excellent job of pulling together course material and presenting it in a accessible (and fun) way. Papers were not too difficult, though you will need to read at least a few of the assigned books.

Great professor, incorporates events and culture from several different angles. Concentrates a lot on pop culture, so as a history major, it kind of detracts from all I want to learn. But definitely a dynamic and interesting class.
this class was good- but read lectures word for word from his notes. funny, but alot is expected on papers. dont have to go to class, but read the books. final was difficult, but gives questions ahead of time. pretty good class.
Great class. Really interesting. He has many things to help you relate to the information more. Very willing to help. He's a great professor.
Loved the class, missed one because I was sick. Schulman is clear, funny, & class had interesting readings. Only needed 3 (cheap) books too. Loved the music/pop culture refs. Spent too much time on the Gilded Age though, and breezed through the 80's...
one of those classes that you actually look fwd to going to. a wonderful professor, intelligent, and obviously takes a lot of time and care into engaging students into his class with fun topics interesting discussions - is funny and thought provoking
He's definitley great. Knows his stuff, ties politics and pop culture together excellently. Lectures are not just informative but entertaining. 364 focued a little too much in the 60's and not enough on 1945-60
Wonderful teacher. His teaching style is great. Unlike most profs he does not just stand in front of the room and lecture for an hour and a half. He mixes pop culture and interesting quotations into his lecture, making concepts easier to grasp.
lets just say that i actually look forward to his hour and half lectures... he's a great speaker, intellegent and witty, and he's bound to keep you awake...even in Morse.
I love the fact that he does multimedia presentations every day. Movie clips, audio clips, pictures...this guy does it all. It's not that hard to pay attention during lectures.
Considering how interesting this era is, he doesn't do it justice. I find it hard to follow his nasal voice & essay-like lectures. The 1st paper seemed simple, but the best grade I heard was a B-. Most of my friends got C-s. He said he'll take improvements on the next one into consideration, tho
AMAZING PROFESSOR. He says it like it is - very clear lectures that totally explain the subject material. Makes the class VERY interesting (especially for being American History, which I hated until I took this class).
AWESOME PROFESSOR! makes lectures fun, two papers, a short quiz, and final, makes himself available, nice guy, definitely take this class if you need a regular old HI requirement because he makes it fun, does read from his notes but he's incredibly organized
Prof Schulman is extremely organized and very interesting. His TA's are great, espeically David Atkinson.
One of the best classes at BU. He makes class interesting & makes you want to learn about the era. Typically, essays & exams are graded very critically, but you get the questions prior to the exam. Some of the TA's are tough...but none are impossible. You can get a good grade if you put in the time.
Professor Schulman is an excellent professor and very acessible. The problem lies in the TA graders who grade very toughly. I would def. suggest taking the class, but be aware of the differences in grading among the TAs
Professor Schulman's lectures are very interesting, and he always has video or audio clips as examples to clarify the material. While my papers have been graded fairly by the TAs, it all depends on which of them gets your essay. Some are better than others
This class was very interesting. Schulman makes an effort to make it entertaining and informative. There are discrepancies among the grading done by the TA's, however. Some are very easy and others are overly critical. But, overall, you shouldn't miss this class!
Great techer, enthusiastic, knowledgable about his subject. 2 Papers that are stressful but average a B, tells you exactly what will be on short test and gives you essays to study for the final. Def get a B if you go to class and take good notes, readings interesting and now taking his HI 365
I loved him and this class. Go to office hours! Even though there were easily 300+ people in the class, he tries to learn people's names. TAs can be hard, but he'll look over the paper if you think you weren't graded correctly (turned my C+ into a B). If you put in the effort, this class is great!
Nice guy, interesting class, generally awful graders. But he'll help you out. It's worth it to discuss paper topics with him in advance. To encourage discussion, he runs around Morse Auditorium with a microphone like Geraldo Rivera, which is pretty amusing.
I Like schulman a lot. He's nice and helpful. Office hours are def. recomended, and if you were unfairly graded he might change your grade
Are you kidding me? No chili pepper bf me? AMAZING. I learned soo much from him in 364, and 365 is living up to expectations. Reading is interesting, textbook follows lectures, go to class--it's fun!!!!
Schulman is the coolest, geekiest prof. ever. He loves what he does, and you can tell. He's a performer when he lectures. TFs in both semesters are annoying, but the info you learn about 1945-present is worth it. Awesome prof.
BEST PROFESSOR AT BU. Did I mention that he is The Man? His lectures are amazing and def worth going to - you watch video clips and listen to good music in class. Extremely helpful all the time.
Unbelievable lecture...feels like a privelage to hear him speak. The most fascinating course I've ever taken in anything, and he is just a freaking cool guy in general. TF makes or breaks the entire thing, as mine graded everybody with the same grade and same comments
Schulman is a really chill professor. Only 2 papers and a final, which is tight. True, TFs make or break the class, but the lectures are pretty interesting, doesn;t get better than watching clips of Swingers. Definitely take this class if you like history.
I loved Schulman. He's nice, funny and so smart! The class isn't too tough and the grading really depends on your TF or grader. In general, 365 has the better TFs. But whether or not you get a good grade, it's worth taking the class
Prof. Schulman is the best professor I have had at BU. He is so passionate about History and teaching. His use of multimedia during his lectures not only makes the class interesting but provides tangible examples. Having TF's helped with the assigned readings and understanding their purpose.
This class had a lot of reading and grueling work, but it was well worth it. Schulman is absolutely the greatest professor BU has to offer. If you do not take a class with him, you're missing out. I cannot rave enough about him. Take any class you can with him!
Greatest Class Ever. Anyone who wants to lecture at BU should have to sit in on his.
Hurray for Prof. Schulman!!! Three exclamation points for him. There's lots of reading, but the books are great. Lectures are attention-grabbing (except for maybe the less captivating 'interest rates of the 70s' section) :) It's still worth it. I learned a lot.
Great lecturer, really captivates the audience, and caters to the students intrests. Easiness of the class really depends on the TF since they grade everything, and there is a lot of reading, but overall awesome class.
A class not to miss. I took both HI 364 and 365, and I am sad there's no 366. He's an excellent professor and doesn't realize how much his students love him and his lectures.
He is so well organized, and he has the most creative lectures.
Really amazing professor, a true credit to the university. Awesome lectures, with lots of multi-media, movies, songs, pictures, etc. Very interesting, great in office hours, fairly easy class if you pay attention, definately a class to take before you graduate if you possibly can.
Amazing!!! Lectures are incredible. I echo all comments below. Take his class, NOW!
This guy is very excited about his job and it really adds to the quality of his classes. I had him for 2 classes and I really enjoyed them.
I really miss this guy--best professor at BU! Genius speaker/ historian, down to earth, funny and an overall nice guy. TAKE HIS CLASSES
Great Guy, knows his stuff. lectures were as unboring as you can make an hour and a half lecture. outlines could be less creative and more comprehensive however.
Best history professor at BU. This guy understands how to engage an audience of students and still be a very instructive teacher. His classes are extremely interesting and filled with music and often movie clips of the assigned era. The readings for the class are great and the writing assignments are almost pleasurable to complete.
Schulman is a fantastic professor! The class is well-taught, very engaging, and definitely the best course I'm in this semester. Don't miss out on this guy!
Good class, once you get past his voice. 2 papers (6 pages) and a final of 2 essays, readings are interesting, especially Murdering McKinley. Good use of video and music, I liked the class quite a bit.
The topic itself is interesting and seldom taught (US History '68-present). But more importantly Schulman was the best professor I've ever had at BU. Others should learn how to lecture effectively from him (informative and entertaining). A really down to earth guy who knows his stuff and how to teach it to you. Take ANYTHING with him!!
This guy is an extremely effective, entertaining lecturer. The topic of this course (US History since '68) is very interesting to me, and he made it all the better. He certainly was not afraid to relate his own life's experiences into the discussion on occasion. The essay topics were interesting. He will help you develop a 70's sensibility!
Engaging lecturer and clearly passionate about what he does. If you can read and write, you'll do well (duh).
Schulman is the man, plain and simple. He will really teach you about American history, and you'll enjoy the experience. Don't miss him!
LOVE HIM! His class is enjoyable to sit through and the lectures are a lot of fun. He clearly loves the subject and enjoys teaching it even more. The books are easy to read and match the material being taught to a T. Take the class, you wont regret it.
I'm well aware that many people consider Schulman to be a fascinating lecturer, but he put me to sleep! I found grading on papers to be fairly difficult, which surprised me as a journalism major/english concentrator who does very well. I would only recommend if you're truly interested in the subject matter - all others AVOID!
Best history professor at BU. really enjoys the subject and it comes through in lectures. grading is not easy but not difficult either. you can miss a ton of lectures and still do really well in the class. take the class!
Schulman is great at explaining history and why it matters. I would recommend this colloquiem to anybody. He really enjoys working with young people and he clearly loves history. There is too much reading but you can get away with not doing much of it, and he's a fair grader.
one of the best lecturers ever!
Schulman is the best professor I've had at BU. He finds a way to personalize a 300 person lecture and learns names quickly and can be pretty funny. The readings, although there are a lot, are interesting and not really required if you pay attention in class, where you spend a lot of time watching really interesting videos and hearing cool stories.
Bruce J is outstanding. I love going to his lectures. His extensive knowledge of contemporary Am hist combined with his powerful use of multimedia truly bring you into American culture. Though his forte is the 70s, I found 45-68 to be fantastic. He is incredibly helpful and humblingly modest (he has published many books that he doesn't teach fr
Professor Schulman is engaging without sacrificing the subject matter. He remembered my first and last name without effort. TA's grade the papers, and they grade hard. They seem to favor generic, well written, well organized analysis. Attendance not mandatory, but good thorough notes make the final quite easy, since questions are prescribed.
I have taken a bunch of Schulman's classes and I can easily say he is my Faviorte professor at BU, helpful, nice, brilliant and just a fun guy. Take his classes if you can
Prof. Schulman is truly a genius when it comes to contemporary US History. His lectures are incredibly entertaining. He really loves his subject matter, and he has such an incredible knowledge of American Culture. TAKE SCHULMAN!
Took for 364/365. The BEST LECTURER ON CAMPUS. I look forward to lecture with him, he is clear, funny, interesting and incorporates music and film. He's a great guy. The only complaint I could have is there isn't much grading to the class, and because he's so popular, they're big so the grading is all up to TA's, who are fickle graders.
I've had Schulman for 152, 364 and 365. While he is a very entertaining lecturer, the textbook must be your main source for information. Lectures serve as supplemental information. Very difficult to take notes in lecture with his style of a storytelling type method of lecturing. Good guy, helpful outside of class. Recommended, but do the reading!!!

Lectures were always fun and the film clips were entertaining, if sometimes a tad gratuitous. I went to see him about some questions I had about an essay and he was very helpful. He even loaned me a book! For that, he is hot.
The class sucked so bad. He's enthusiastic about what he teaches but he is also very opinionated and unclear. Has too much pride in his generation and is completely biased. You are completely on your own in this class. TFs are so horrible. I learned nothing.
I was really excited about taking this class, but I regret taking it. Lectures are full of information, but there's no way to take useful notes with his style of lecturing. Discussion section was useless, but if you miss more than 3 you fail the whole class. Essays were HARD, questions were too broad and unclear, and TFs grade EVERYTHING (harshly!)
I was seriously disappointed by this class. We had so many lectures and I took so many notes, but all I took away from this class was a "feeling" of each decade. I feel like he skimmed over actually telling us facts and events in order to make his argument to us. Very liberally biased, although the class didn't seem to mind. And yes, the TFs suck.
Disappointed is definitely the word. His lectures consist of him reading nonstop from his notes (and I'm pretty sure that his lectures on the 70s are him reading his own book). Essays are impossibly hard. Prompts have many subsections, TFs will tell you that you can focus on only a few, only to deduct major points for doing just that.
I was excited about this class but it failed to deliver. You're far better off with HI152. TFs were the worst I've had. Essays were graded far too harshly. Felt like an English class with all the novels we had to read. I sat in the front all semester and didn't seem to learn anything new.
The lectures are far too broad to learn anything. The essays are incredibly specific and multifaceted. The TF's tell you to focus on one thing and then take points off when you do it. The essays are graded ridiculously hard and the discussion class is a joke. Schulman is pompous, unclear and annoying after the novelty of the first few lectures.
Prof. Schulman's classes are so big that getting to know him is impossible. He may never even see your submitted work since he employs so many TAs. His lectures are funny and engaging, though it is hard to take notes during them. Exams are difficult; I studied like crazy and only got a B, due to the abstract essay questions. No participation grade.
Schulman rocks. Period.
Lectures were good but consisted mostly of Schulman looking down at his notes without much elaboration. Strangely nervous around anything to do with gay history. Not the best professor, in general. A bring writer.
Amazing lecturer, great books, very interesting. More of a class on culture than his. He is pretty full of himself, not so helpful in OH and lets class out late all the time. TA just let class run itself, but really good in OH. Use the textbook and just make your papers really organized, you can argue what you want. Draw in a lot of the readings.
He's a great lecturer, but rating him is misleading, since your entire grade comes from the TA. There is an impossible amount of reading, but you can get away with only doing some of it. Overall, the class was highly enjoyable, just be prepared for the high level of TA-involvement, and low level of prof-involvement.
Schulman must be among BU's top faculty members. His lecture style is engaging beyond belief. He assigns a buttload of reading, but you can choose how much you want to do. The class only has two essays, both of which are fairly short. If you have any interest in American history, take this course. It is fascinating.
This class is great and really enlightening. Schulman makes it fantastic. He's funny, and incorporates all aspects of life in the era, including different things in pop culture. He's a great professor and I would STRONGLY suggest this class.
Schulman might be the best professor I've ever had. I admit that I am interested in history so I was drawn to this class but Schulman is the most engaging, most passionate professor I've had. His lectures are amazing! As for the people who are saying he's hard to get to know, just take your time and go to his lunches and you're golden! RECOMMENDED!
very engaging in lecture
Schulman's a bit of an odd duck, but in the best way possible. He's highly invested in the subject matter, and very engaging. He's also quite funny, I wish I had gotten to know him better outside of class. Only downside is that TA's grade the papers, and the ones for the Spring semester were pretty shoddy. Otherwise, great professor, great course!
Professor Schulman was my favorite professor at BU!! His lectures were always entertaining and included pop culture references. An amazing teacher, definitely take his class if you can!!!
I really love Professor Schulman. He's a funny guy and the type of person you enjoy being around because he is so passionate. If you are looking for a fun, engaging, interesting, and awesome professor - take his class. My favorite professor at BU.
Schulman was one of my favorite professors at BU. He's hilarious and you don't want to miss his final lecture which he calls "Schulman's Finale." He made his classes fun by including music throughout history into his lectures and having contests to win random items that were relevant to the lecture. I always looked forward to his classes!
Professor Schulman is a well of helpful information. He knows so much about contemporary American history and is able to impart his wealth of knowledge extremely effectively. The assignments make sense. He gives a ton of information, so be prepared to really learn. Perfect teacher for true history nerds.
Very passionate and dedicated to history and his students. Midterm was fairly easy and papers weren't too painful. I highly recommend taking courses Prof. Schulman teaches!
The BEST history professor I've had at BU hands down!
Hands down the best Professor I have taken at BU! Lectures are upbeat and lively (music included)!! Prof. Schulman is extremely knowledgeable and his classes are really on point! AMAZING classprofessor if you are really into history. Oh yeah, and Prof. Schulman even takes students out to lunch, which is great!
Schulman is incredibly intelligent and welcoming to students. His lectures will blow you away. Always is extremely helpful during office hours and really wants to help students do their best. Go to office hours, it'll make a huge difference.
A really wonderful lecturer and professor. I think my favorite part was always that he had a point to every lecture--he argued a position on history rather than just repeating facts. Papers weren't hard, especially if you read the (very good) books assigned. Funny guy, too.
Professor Schulman is fantastic. Like you I looked him up on this site and was impressed. His class is lecture heavy but a lot of the stuff is interesting because the history is recent. There is not a lot of homework and even extra credit opportunity. He really is a fun guy to have a class with and his guidelines are clear. You won't be sorry.
Professor Schulman is the best lecturer I have ever experienced at BU. Everything is super organized and clear. Group project sucked, but not really his fault. Fun side assignments, only one big paper and no homework. Go to every lecture and you'll be fine. Always plays music, brings prizes for trivia, offers walking tours and free lunch. Cool guy!
Media and Politics HI231 is his and Christopher Daly's brainchild. Lectures are laid back and they don't take attendance, but lose focus for 5 minutes and that 5 minutes could cost you a good chunk of the exam. You never really know what's important and what's not, and you just have to assume that you can be held accountable to every word he utters
American History 151 and 152 with Dr. Schulman is an easy and interesting class even for those who don't like to read like me. The assignments for this class consists of 2 big papers, a final, and 2 grade-boosting side assignments. The final is easy as it follows his study guide to a T.
An amazing, clearly intelligent professor. I love history so it's not hard for me to like the class, but even if you don't he's a great guy and makes the subject interesting. I like his teaching style because he lectures as if he is telling a story. Definitely take his class! Also, shouldn't be so hard if you took APUSH in high school.
AMAAAZING, incredibly well spoken and passionate.
I loved Professor Schulman. I took HI152 with him Spring 2020 aka the first COVID sem. In person, he was hilarious and so wholesome. His lectures were really well organized and interesting. When we moved online, his lectures felt the exact same and he was super wholesome too. There are a few papers but I genuinely enjoyed them. Would recommend.
Prof Schulman is amazing. He will help you succeed if you talk to him, and his feedback on assignments is prompt and extremely helpful. He made learning history so much fun, and I looked forward to all his classes. The assignments made me a better reader/writer/historian and I'm thankful for that.
Schulman is a pretty good lecturer! Just keep in mind all grading is done by TFs and all assignments (at least for the COVID semester) were essays/written assignments, so grading is very subjective. Overall you'll learn a lot even if you took APUSH in High school, just remember that grading in this class can sometimes be harder than HI200+ classes
Dr. Schulman is simply one of the best professors I've ever had. He has a level of care for his students that is incredibly rare among college professors. Please take any and all of his classes.
Schulman is an amazing professor and the class is reasonably easy as long as you put effort into it. At least skim the readings before class and you'll pass. The projects have a heavy hand in your grade, but Schulman is always available if you have questions about it. Genuinely funny guy and would not mind taking him again
Prof Schulman is such an entertaining professor. You don't need to do the readings, he'll tell you all the same info in lectures. There aren't that many assignments, but Schulman is just so entertaining that I look forward to going to class. He's extremely smart and respected.
Prof Schulman is a real entertainer. His classes are fun, but you can't slack off - he'll call you out. Use Unstuck AI and take good notes to stay on top of things. Overall, a worthwhile credit if you put in the work.
Prof. Schulman is a great prof and keeps his classes fun. I attended every single lecture out of choice rather than obligation. The topics he teaches seem surface level, but he provides amazing analysis, weaving academic history with pop cultural info. Cannot recommend enough really. Attend his free lunches and answer the bonus questions.
Prof. Schulman is incredible! He uses a similar assignment structure for many of his courses and they are easy to understand and do well on if you put effort in. Attendance is highly recommended because the important information is in the lectures, but the lectures are so interesting and he makes an effort to be engaging and fun.
Lecture is more engaging than your average PowerPoint prof. Schulman doesn't grade; TFs do. Mine (Jenna Hagan) made the discussion a living hell with her super-picky, ruthless point deductions for assignments, and demanding participation requirements; she ruined history for me. Attendance taken in both the lecture and the discussion.
This was an engaging class! Schulman's lectures were great and not monotonous at all. My TF Jenna was a great section leader who provided a supportive learning environment and worthwhile feedback. You need to put in effort in this class, but Jenna is a GOAT, and I will die on that hill. IDK why there r haters up in here.
Prof. Schulman is a FANTASTIC teacher, so so passionate and knowledgeable. My only complaint is that he spent too much time on the 70's in a course meant to cover the 21st century as well—he's clearly nostalgic for that decade, and I am too tbh...Also my TA, Jenna Hagan, was amazing, super engaging and great at stimulating class discussion.
Genuinely a good guy and teacher who enjoys his job. I never did the readings but took extensive notes on lectures and was fine. Somewhat heavy workload but manageable when you get ahead of it and visit him during office hours. He was awesome and knew what he was talking about!
literally the goat of the history department and you'd be hard pressed to convince me otherwise...his lectures are hilarious and well organized, very approachable and just an incredibly smart guy.
