Best professor I've had at JMU so far. Made this gen ed fun (especially since it was in May session). Daily quizzes were easy when you read the stuff but he was tough on the paper.

Johnson is the best professor i have had- he is fair and a tough grader, but he's there to help his students, and class is always interesting! you will learn an incredible amount of information

Awesome Prof. Loves what he does and very smart. Papers are tough, but he is very willing to help. Only thing that sucks about him is that he needs to teach some higher level english courses :)

By far the best professor I've had at JMU. I came into the class thinking I hated British lit and now it is my favorite class. He is great to talk to and he's incredibly fair. Class is fun and flies by.

Really, tough but I actually learned something. The papers were damn hard, and he graded them like we were professionals. But he helped us to understand the topic and made it interesting.

I love this man. I'm a senior and had him for a gen ed as a freshman and he still remembers my name when I see him in the halls. a tough grader but very fun. sometimes makes you sing. tough tests but will help your writing.

I absolutely love this guy. He's so entertaining and fair. Johnson is one of the nicest guys!

The class is not a piece of cake. There is a lot of reading assignments. It's ok if you keep up with the reading. His midterm is fair and the papers he is strict on. Overall a fair and nice guy!

One of the best professors at JMU! tough grader on papers, but he is very helpful. Has daily quizzes, but they're easy if you keep up w/readings. You won't want to miss class cuz he makes an English class interesting! Take 236 over 235, its much easier.

He's very fair and makes class discussion interesting and interactive. He sticks to the rules but gives you alot of help. Great professor overall, take him!

Best professor ever, no question. He really cares about his students and their grades. He IS a rough paper grader, but will see you in his office as much as you need to help you. I've had him for 235 and 236 and I adore him!

My favorite professor at JMU. I had him for English 101 his first semester at JMU, and as a result I ended up majoring in English.

Had him with no interest in the class and LOVED it. He prompted me to take more english classes than required and I'm a business major. Best teacher you'll find and goes out of his way to help. Anyone that can make me care about Shakespeare is awesome

You have a quiz everyday in class so as long as you read you will do fine. Beware of his papers, he grades them extremely hard. Go to his office hours, he is helpful.

i love him! i look forward to going to his class. you have to read, but he gives many opportunities for extra credit. he's picky about papers, but willing to help. i'm taking him next semester for another class because he is so awesome.

Very very nice looking guy for an older type. Just do the reading and you're fine. There's 3 papers and 2 exams but is very helpful and makes the class fun. Definitely take this guy, he's got nice legs.

The most interesting class I have taken at JMU!The reading is not bad, sometimes long, but it very interesting.If you go to the writing center and ask him for help on the papers you will do fine.Quizzes on reading are easy and he gives a lot of extra credit! He makes you want to go to class!

This guy rocks. I don't like the content that much but he teaches it well. Lots of E/C and papers arnt bad. I won pack of cigarretts from him in class. Pretty cool guy.

Loved this class. You read things you never would have read on you own but end up acctually loving it. Bruce is great! He doesn't grade hard really, just fair. I want to take him again and again...Such a good class!

My favorite professor this semester! He is very nice and gives lots of extra credit. His paper grading can be hard but he is willing to work with you. He gives quizzes daily but they are easy if you just read the material. I would definitely recommend this professor! He is awesome.

GHUM 200 with Johnson is amazing! EVERYONE should take this class within their time at JMU. The topic is essential, and Johnson teaches it so well and very fairly. Lots of reading and writing required, but SO worth it. TAKE THIS CLASS AND TAKE IT FROM JOHNSON! :)

he's an awesome professor. one of the coolest i've had so far. hilarious and super-approachable. people who say he grades papers hard probably did them the night before they were due. put a little effort in and you'll make the grade. he offers extra credit. i definitely wish i was an english major just so i could take another class of his.

AWESOME Professor. Everytime I go to his class I remember why I am an english major. Write your papers on time and do your work and everything will be fine I will be taking his class again!

Johnson's class has been one of my best academic experiences here at JMU. Definitely take him if you can. He grades fairly, and if you go see him about your papers beforehand he is very helpful. His class is very interesting, and he incorporates other disciplines into it. His attendance policy is strict, but you won't want to miss class.

Very nice teacher and fair grader but I want to warn you that it is a lot of work for a gen ed class. I wrote three 7-8 page papers for the class and every day he does a quiz on the assigned reading. It is possible to get an A if you work hard though.

This was one of my favorite classes that I've taken this semester, but I had a lot of time to devote to it and was very initially interested. Johnson is is knowledgable, interesting and interested in his students. It was a lot of work though because there were two huge papers that he expects a lot out of.

Don't go into this expecting a GenEd level class. Definitely not for slackers, but it was the best class I've taken so far at JMU. Bruce is the MAN! A lot of reading that seems overwhelming, but it's manageable and usually interesting. Attendance policy and a quiz everyday but he gives a lot of bonus points. He's really nice. Take him!!

Bruce is an awesome teacher. He is hilarious and comes up with some of the most random stuff ever. He's a tough grader but he's EXTREMELY smart and knows what he's talking about. If you are willing to put work into this class, you'll love it.

Bruce is great! He managed to make 17th century british poetry fun and entertaining! He grades hard on papers, but show up to every class and do the readings and you will be fine - take him it's worth it!

Dr. Johnson is a really cool guy, and his classes are fun to be in. I was surprised at how much more difficult his upper level classes are compared to the Gened I had with him. I definitely recommend his class though.

This has been my favorite professor so far at JMU. Really nice and cool guy. It does require reading almost every night and small quizzes on the reading that are graded by ur classmates. If you are willing to do the reading, you can come out with an A in this class.

Bruce Johnson is the best teacher I have ever had. He really wants you to do well in the class. Go to class every day because there are daily quizzes on the readings assigned. There are 3 papers which are definitely challenging so don't leave them until the last minute. Great class, Johnson is funny and knows what hes talking about.

Can't say enough good things about him. Interesting reading material, interesting discussion, & he is very knowledgeable but not unapproachable at all. When you turn in final drafts of papers he lets you get peer edits & then change things on the paper you turn in at the last minute, it's very helpful. You will learn a lot & feel motivated by him.

Very nice man. Most of the class time consisted of discussions about the material read the night before. He will call on random people to participate in the discussions. His tests are hard but the papers were not too bad (you have 3 of them). Lectures can be confusing and hard to follow but otherwise good professor

Johnson is really intelligent and interesting. I really enjoyed this class even though, i'm usually more of a science person. TAKE HIM! He really isn't that bad. The only reason I got a very high B is because I screwed up the midterm b/c of mono. One of the best profs at JMU i've had so far.

I LOVE BRUCE! He's a really funny and just nice guy. Super helpful and always willing to answer questions (even if that means going way off-topic). I'm definitely going to take him again. Work load isn't too bad as long as you keep up with the readings for the mini quizzes in class.

I LOVE BRUCE. Such a cool guy and one of the BEST english profs I have ever had. I read the assinged books and worked hard on the papers but i loved it! I had more fun and learned more in his class than several classes combined. TAKE Bruce but be prepared to write thorogh papers

Bruce is amazing! I took his Eng 299 class and loved it. He makes a lot of quizzes and his answers are pretty specific, so make sure to read. Before a paper is due, go to his office hours. He is really helpful and it will likely boost your grade for the paper. Several opportunities for extra credit.

One of the sweetest professors. I took his 299 class last year and am currently enrolled in his Grammar 309 course this semester. He's not the easiest professor, he expects a lot of self-learning out of his students and quizzes heavily. Although, he is incredibly flexible and willing to help through office hours! Highly recommended!

Definitely suggest taking him. Interesting readings, great lectures, funny guy. He can be a bit of a tough grader on papers, but it will only make you better, and he's totally willing to work with you. Great class, awesome professor!

Johnson is the man! Love his class. His is so nice and super helpful when it comes to giving feedback. He wants you to be successful & states exactly what he expects from you. lets you venture your own path when it comes to the writing assignments (theres 3). There are daily quizzes in this class but if you do the readings, they arent hard at all.

Johnson is really cool. I had my doubts about this class but he makes it a lot of fun. Expect lots of class discussions with very few actual lectures. There are three papers, a midterm, a final, and some quizzes spread throughout the semester. The papers aren't that hard and he gives you clear instructions. Would take again.

He is the sweetest. He really wants to help you. He teaches at the pace the class can handle which I really appreciated. If we were not ready to be quizzed on a topic, he would wait until he felt like we were ready. You have to do the homework and put in the effort. If you want to do the minimal amount of work, this is not the class for you.

Professor Johnson is like if a smile was a person. I'm not a massive fan of grammar, but he made it fun, useful, and easy. I love this man with my entire soul

a great professor who genuinely cares about his students and trusts them. he is a personable guy and respects everyone's opinions. attendance isn't taken but there are quizzes each class. even though I was allowed two skips I didn't take any because I actually wanted to be in class.

Some people in my class complained that they couldn't follow what he was saying, but they can't expect to vibe well with every professor they meet. Johnson really does his best to make grammar as easy to digest as possible! Take him!!

Dr Johnson is amazing. I know way more about CS Lewis than I ever wanted but he made the class as easy as possible. Reading quiz every class but they're easy questions and you grade it yourself; at the very least sparknote it and you'll do okay. Gives random points out, but 2 big papers he grades pretty tough on.
