average chem teacher. kinda funny in class
Nice guy. Average chem prof, but I would recommend him.
his class is a little harder but he gives you a lot of opportunity to do well. He's a pretty nice guy and has a good sense of humor. Just be prepared to print out about 300 pages of notes.
I learn more reading the book while taking a 5 minute dump than I do sitting through a weeks worth of his lectures. Yeah, he's pretty funny. But that doesn't make up for the fact that he's the worst teacher I've ever had.
ummm......ya not much to say. ok teacher. used a lot on e-reserve so you had to print of notes if you wanted to have any idea to what was going on in class
i had de la rosa before him, and Kowert is sooooo much better. he's a good teacher, knows what he's talking about, and explains everything that needs clarification. he gives good notes and gives good descriptions of what's going to be on the tests
after disaterous first semester with de la rosa, kowert seems like a chem god. he knows what he is teaching, & conveys it to students very well. Great sense of humor; tests arent easy, but he goes out of his way to try & make you succeed as long as you meet him half way. HIGHLY recommended.
A hard class, but easier than Dieck. THIS is a guy who knows what he's talking about and sincerely wants to help you learn. HOWEVER, his tests and assigned homework are NO joke. Seriously, devote time everyday just to do this guy's homework.
This guy has the purest heart here on campus! His teaching methods are very thorough and he is always willing to work with you when in need. He is also a very fair teacher and expects the same out of EVERYONE! I recommend his classes to the fullest extent!
He's a very good teacher and his notes really help you a lot. As long as you pay attention and go to class, and keep up on the homework you should be fine. He doesn't grade the homework but some of his test questions come straight from there.
He's not bad. Gives LOADS of exercise problems that aren't mandatory to do but I HIGHLY recommend doing them b/c they do show up on his exams. I also recommend buying the Solution Manual. YOU will succeed in his class if you put in the time and effort by studying his notes & the assigned problems.
I had to withdraw chem last semester due to a failing grade and retook it with Kowert as my teacher. Let me just tell you that I am getting a B+ in the class and I understand Chemistry so much better now. He has a good heart and his teaching methods are quite effective. I recommend him for Pre-Med
Had him for PChem II. SUPER good prof, very clear in class, makes slides available for printout online. He also gives really helpful formula sheets to use on the homework and tests. Posts all solutions to homework online. VERY good, I would definitely recommend.
he printed off notes and we just filled parts of it in, tests are similar to homework problems and the old test he hands out. nice guy
very consistent w/ printing off notes for students, explained material thoroughly, hw not required but many test ques. come from homework--same exact problems but w/ diff. #s--highly recommend kowert--sometimes cracks jokes outta the blue & actually give you quite a chuckle
Kowert is a really wacky, odd fellow (with a *VERY* dry sense of humor and similar demeanor), but he wants his students to succeed. He is as helpful as you need him to be without holding your hand - just do the "optional" assignments, go to class, take notes, and review the material repeatedly and you'll be fine. This ISN'T a class you can slack in
Good notes but is hard to stay awake through. Help sessions are nice if you are prepared with questions.
one word: legendary. best, most organized, most clear professor in the chemistry department. if you are lucky enough to have a class with him, then bown down and praise god!! chemistry doesn't get any better than this.
He is one of my favorite professors that I've had at SLU. Compared to Kirkpatrick, he is a chemistry God. VERY heplful, nice, and funny at times. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Take him, and you won't regret it.
Seriously, this guy is great. He'll help you out a lot and loves to BS with his students. Although he's old as all heck, he's still just as young as us. Coolest guy of all time.
printed off about 1000 pages of notes...overall hes very helpful if youre paying attention in class but you drift off for 1 sec, no idea whats going on. tests are straightforward.
Kowert is the sweetest old guy who cracks the occasional joke. It's not an easy class but he knows the material and presents it well...he's been doing it a while =] Printing the notes was a pain and his exams are pretty hard if you study last minute but he's the best option in the chemistry department. I recommend!!
Really boring class. Hard to stay awake. He talks in a monotone voice. A lot of people miss class and just copy the notes. You pretty much have to teach yourself from the book to do well...
Class can get a little bit boring, but Kowert is a sweet old man with a mild sense of humor. I would recommend sitting in the first few rows (its easier to stay awake). He does a good job of informing his students via email. Three tests and a finale. Second test is very, very difficult.
He is boring in class. His 2nd test is HARD. You must do the chem hwk problems. I didn't do anything in his class and got a C from High School knowledge. However, if i studied i prob could've got an A. Don't take too many courses ur 1st semester!!!! screws u over. SO I would have to say take him, hes not bad.
If you don't have him for a teacher, you're missing out. He's a funny man. Chemistry is hard, but he is your best bet. Printed off a lot of notes, but they summarize the textbook well. Still very helpful to read through book. DO ALL THE HW PROBLEMS ASSIGNED AND PRACTICE EXAMS!! Don't get behind. Very hard to catch up.
Kowert is a wonderful old man, who has quite a dry sense of humor. He writes notes on transparencies for a projector, and can be quite monotone. However, his notes describe everything extremely well, and I barely use the textbook. Tests are hard, but fair- he puts up practice exams, and hosts two help sessions the week of the exam. Recommended.
Ignore first comment. If you work hard you can do well. Take notes, study them, do the HW problems & do the practice exams. Notes are just an outline of the book. Take the multiple choice questions seriously. I found that I usually lost more points on multiple choice than the problems at the end. Kowert is a legendary teacher with great stories.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. You have to fight to stay awake in that class. Going is optional because you just copy what he writes on the overhead. Tests are hard and I was more confused after the class than I was before.
Dr. Kowert explains things in the hardest way possible. He talks himself in circles and it is very confusing. It's hard to remember your notes because he is so monotoned and you fill in blanks on sheet you have to print out before class. I think it is a difficult learning environment.
Found this class very difficult, It was hard for me to pay attention and learn in class. Nice person, but didn't click with me as a professor.
He's helpful during the review sessions, but class is really boring. All he does is write notes and his handwriting can be hard to read.
Kowert is a really nice guy. His lectures can be boring, but his office hours are really helpful. Definitely study for the tests. The first one is easy, but the others are at least moderately hard.
Dr. Kowert has very fair tests. If you study the lecture notes and do the homework you will do well on them without a doubt. He teaches off of overheads but lets you print off and fill in his lecture notes which provides great study material. I recommend taking this class with him!
Very good teacher. Just uses overhead slides. Go to class. Take notes. Study notes. Do practice problems and practice tests. You'll be just fine.
Kowert is a really great professor. He is really clear about what he wants. As long as you attend lecture and read the book, the tests should be pretty easy. Also, he can be really funny in his own way at times. Definitely recommend him!
Horrible. He makes you print outlines of his overhead slides and all he does is fill them in and say exactly what he is writing. Puts half the class to leep and the other half isn't there. Ended up reading the book and not going to class halfway through. Also, the class grade consists of 3 tests and a final and you are bound to fail one.
Terrible professor. He's boring and cranky in lectures. The only grades you have in his class are his tests, which are nearly impossible. Office hours are mandatory if you want to succeed in the class.
The class itself is rough. Lots of material on a few tests, which are your only grades (none are dropped). Watch out for test #2. Lectures are boring except for an occasional funny story. Nice guy, but if you want to understand the material go to office hours. If you just sit in lecture you won't find him very helpful.
Pretty easy material considering what it is. At this level of course work, he does not like the gen chem level of dumb questions asked in office hours. He will help you in office hours, but actually go in because you're struggling with a concept, not "oh, where is this in the notes."
Dr. Kowert is the way to go. He's a nice and funny guy. Tests are same as Yablonsky's so it doesn't matter much since they both follow the textbook and give the same slides. Chemistry at SLU is not easy by any means though. Pretty difficult to handle when you have 3 or 4 other classes to take care of as well.
Meet your friend and mine, a test you aren't prepared for...famous quotes from a man who fought in the civil war. Bruce Kowert has been teaching chemistry since 1200 B.C., and his success has not seen the face of earth..yet. In 2045, after he revives himself (bruce=phoenix) he will have his moment as the greatest professor in SLU.
Bruce is one of the driest professors I have ever encountered, but the off-topic stories he tells once in a while are hilarious. He is one of the better teachers for chemistry at SLU. Going to class is vital in order to understand the notes for the class. Review the notes for all exams, they basically cover all that will be on the exam.
Good teacher. Has good sense of humor and he is knowledgeable about Chem. Practice tests are similar to real tests and are manageable. Cons: Must keep up with his blazing writing pace; can be cranky when going to office hours; hard to keep awake in his class.
Nice guy. He may only do his lectures by writing on an overhead projector, but they are easy to understand, and he explains the subject matter well. He is quite old though
Dr. Kowert is an excellent professor. No, you can't fool around in class and yes, you need to read the book and do homework assignments. However, if you do all of these things you'll be fine. There are so many resources available: SI sessions, exam review sessions, etc. Dr. Kowert really does care about his students.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He is arrogant and not helpful at all. Don't sneeze in class or say "bless you" if someone else does because he will call you out on it for disrupting class. Don't ask questions because he will give you a smartass response that is not helpful. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Not a terrible professor. He makes an effort to help out students, but his lectures are generally unhelpful and will ultimately leave you with a bunch of incomprehensible notes. Pretty much for the Chemistry department at SLU.
Terrible teacher and you're forced to take him eventually. Go to class and fill in the outlines and reread them excessively. Do the book problems and you'll get solid B/A.
Not a bad professor. Just go to class, take notes, and do the practice tests and you should be alright. Hard to get an A, but if you work for it, you definitely can get it.
This was the hardest B I had to work for. Skipped lecture alot because he is hard to follow in class, if you stop paying attention for 1 minute your completely lost. Also, he never curved any tests, which sucked because many people in the class were failing. Do all the book problems assigned and practice his previous tests.
Many people never went to class, but I found it helpful. Class can be boring, but sometimes Kowert will tell random/awesome stories. Expect to print lots of pages of skeletal notes. You will NEED to work hard for an A. Do practice problems in the book. Study far in advance of tests. SI sessions, Review sessions, practice tests are helpful.
Kowert is a horrible teacher. He just gives you note without actually doing problems that would appear on exams. His help sessions are horrible, his class is boring, his teaching is not worth 0.02. Study in your own time.study, know it in and out. A very Hard B, yet alone a C to pull off.Amazed he blamed the class for 50% of students failing it.
Decent teacher. He's clear in his words so it's easy to understand and pick up the concepts. but his tests are decently hard. he's old so it's hard for him to keep class interesting. he lectures the whole hour. but he is better than dr. yablonsky who I think is the only other option, so if he is, then take dr. kowert.
Everyone seems to dislike Dr. Kowert, but I think he did a great job. Granted I like Chemistry, I still had to push myself for my grade. Do not slack off during the semester or it is hard to pick your grade up. Attend the help sessions, and ask him when things are not clear after class.
Kowert is not a bad professor, but his notes are all over the place. It's difficult to learn anything in class when you're so focused on writing down all the notes. His tests are hard, and he doesn't curve any of them. Making a C in the class is hard enough, so if you want an A or B, make this class a priority because it doesn't come easy.
Awful professor. I LOVED chemistry up until I took his class. He is very unorganized, and does not explain concepts in an efficient, understandable manner. I had to drop this class because he made it so difficult and impossible to grasp. The notes do not make any sense, and the tests are extremely difficult.
The class is going to be challenging but an A is doable. If you actually read the textbook, do practice problems and practice test you will know everything you need. I always went to class even though I didn't find it necessary and never went to a single help session or office hours and got an A.
He is super sweet and adorable and I love him for that, but his class is really hard! It's also very dry, so it was hard to make myself study as hard as I needed to for an A. The final is the hardest exam of them all and that is what brought my B+ to a B-, so study throughout the semester in preparation for the curve balls he throws on the final.
He can be slightly mean or sassy when it comes to any question. I personally never went to class after realizing how boring it was. So, I stuck to reading the book and NOT doing all of those suggested problems and I did fine. However, the 2nd test (buffers) is the hardest test that hit people's grades. So, study the hardest for that one.
I do not recommend Kowert. He is very condescending and rude when I went to office hours. He also isn't really teaching, just copying from the book. The only thing for your grades are 3 exams and a final. I did the homework problems, practice exams, and still got a D in the class. if I took it at a different university it would be better.
Kowert is one of the worst professors on campus. He constantly rambles and doesn't seem to care for his students. The class consists of 3 exams and one final exam. No exam grade will be dropped and there is no curve. Get out of his class and take it with an another professor while you can.
Dr. Kowert truly cares about his students. He makes himself very accessible and is helpful during his office hours. Chemistry isn't an easy subject, but Dr. Kowert makes it more tolerable. I would highly recommend Dr. Kowert! Can he be my grandpa? P.S. Go to SI sessions!
Dr. Kowert is a very intelligent professor. He uses skeleton lecture notes that are filled in during lecture and those are extremely valuable when studying as are his practice tests. The only negatives I have are that he will never stop lecture to take questions and that when you go into office hours with questions, he tends to be condescending.
Dr. Kowert is a very intelligent professor. However, he isn't the best at teaching all that he knows. He uses fill in the blank notes that I don't find very helpful. The only way to survive this course is by teaching yourself. If you do that, you might pull off a B. The only way to get an A in this course is to be naturally good at Chem on your own
Lectures are boring, they are just fill in the blank notes. Hard to learn from his notes, I had to basically teach myself using the book or get help from a tutor or the TA. Very time consuming class because you learn very little in class. Dr. Kowert is a nice man, he was relatively helpful when i went to his office hours and is fun to talk to.
While Dr. Kowert is super old, he knows his stuff. I do well with his fill in the blank notes and I was finally able to get an A in Chem with him. His practice tests are just like the actual exams and asking him questions about them was super helpful. He still recognizes me and says hi when I run into him around campus.
The format of Dr. Kowert's classes is fill-in-the-blank notes, which can get extremely mundane, but you have to be careful about going to class and paying attention, otherwise you can fall behind very easily. Many students skip class and copy notes, but I recommend hearing the lectures first hand so you retain more info. Great guy, ok professor.
If you can, take another professor. Kowert hasn't adapted with the times in regards to his teaching methods. He's quite rude and very difficult to deal with. He probably shouldn't be teaching anymore at SLU. Tests are on par with the rest of the department, but him being so traditional makes this course more difficult than it needs to be.
Kowert was an okay teacher. Everything is on a projector and lectures are boring. You have to print out the notes before hand because he does not upload notes from class. Tests are straightforward.
Dr. Kowert is a pretty good professor overall. He gives very clear information about exams and pretty much anything else related to the class. But his notes are HAND WRITTEN print-outs. He stands at the front of the room bent over his overhead projector and talking to the class. Not a very interactive guy, but is decent at explaining things.
Dr. Kowert is one of the most confusing professors I've had. He gives notes in a fill in the blank form which is very impersonal, he barely even looks up at the class. And he rarely understands/clearly answers questions in class. The material isn't hard but he doesn't teach it well and ends up confusing everyone.
The homework, practice tests, and notes are the exams. If you can memorize how to do problems you can get an A in PChem. Learned absolutely nothing in lecture but came to class to fill in his notes. He'll bump you up at the end of the semester if you have good attendance if you are borderline so fill in attendance everyday. And wow what a looker ;)
While good ole' Bruce has some funny moments (IE: clicking his tongue) he ultimately is not a good teacher. While as a human being he is very nice and understanding, he did not teacher well, went into too much detail, and never really answered questions that were asked.
Kowert is a nice professor and has some comedic moments. The downfall is he spends a ton of time explaining things, which is nice for harder topics but really tedious for the easier topics. The tests are very difficult especially since the class is a premed weed out
I would not willingly take a class from Kowert again. He doesn't engage students in his lectures and doesn't notice them if they try to ask him a question. He has a monotone voice, asks no questions, and lectures without any regard for the students in the room.
There is no reason for you to go to class unless you want to be bored to death. I never learned a thing in lecture. Tests aren't bad, just do the practice tests. I used the book since I didn't go to lecture.
The only grades were 60 points for online homework that doesn't apply to the exams, 60 points for recitation quizzes, and then exam grades. Everything is worth way more points than it should be on exams -- 3 points for multiple choice and 7-10 points for free response.
Dr. Kowert does nothing to make lectures interesting. He reads off slides that are available to you on blackboard. I was in a class of 200 people and only 50 actually showed up. If you take this class I recommend teaching yourself and asking someone else if you have questions.
Dr. Kowert is very unapproachable and is no help outside of class. His tests are fair and basically the practice tests. However, he is very boring and his lectures do absolutely nothing. You basically have to teach yourself everything.
Kowert is a very passive professor, and has a laissez faire attitude toward his class. He teaches gen chem 1 very distantly, not making lectures mandatory (and his lectures are pretty pointless) and having the student's be more in control of what they learn and the pacing. He provides the resources, and its up to the student to use them. V nice guy
IF you are the kind of student who likes to pace their own learning this guy is for you. There is only ALEKS and test in this class. I suggest if you do not understand what going on go to his office hours. He will go through every single problem with you if you are confused. His lectures are boring but he does a lot of practice problems.
I probably went to class like 5 times for the whole semester. Literally just memorize and study all the old exams and you'll be good. I didn't even study the PowerPoints that much. Looking through the book for the harder concepts are useful. Final was a little tricky but the grading scale is curved. Overall, not that bad! didn't really learn much.
seems unapproachable but if you show up to office hours he's very helpful! attendance isn't mandatory and a lot of people don't show up-I mean the lectures are posted online anyways. His tests are similar to the practice ones.
Lecture was boring at times, he reads off the power points. He wants his students to do well, so he encourages visiting his office hours. Go to office hours, SI sessions, complete old exams, and do book problems. I struggle with chemistry, but I did fairly well in this course after the first exam. Learn what studying habits work best for you.
Professor Kowert is a gem. You kids do not know how lucky you are to get a beat down from a real professor. Professor Kowert is NOT bad a teacher, P-Chem is just a bad subject!! I am now a teacher myself (Inorganic Chem.). The daily shaming Professor Kowert gave me and my friends helped get me to where I am now. Now go do your homework!
