Rumor has it that he's the most demanding professor in the CLS department, but he's the only one I've had. Yes, his classes are difficult, but the result of getting through them is being well prepared in the subject. He's also funny.
He's not the easiest teacher, but getting up early and traipsing to the CAC in the snow that winter quarter wasn't so bad. That man "woke me up" those mornings! He is quite funny. (If dirty jokes and curse words freak you out, though, need not a
Really knowledgable and funny guy. Likes risque jokes :) Study and you'll be fine. Loved his accent! He makes classics interesting.
wonderful prof. very funny, wise, and caring. All he ask is that you show up for class and study. My favorite prof. yet at WSU
Dr. Laforse is a nice guy at first but then he realizes that his class is a joke and everybody gets As without coming to it. He singles out students and picks on them to make up for his worthless existence. Don't go to class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Laforse is a great professor! If you like "reading the news paper" as the professor teaches-don't take his class! If you want to gain an appreciation for the Greek and Roman period then you will like his class. Note taking is key!
Stay away from this class. He knows what he is talking about, but talks too much about stupid things that you should even know.
great prof. knows his stuff. expects you to work hard and attend class, but he makes class enjoyable and a learning experience. I would recomend taking him for any class available, My favorite prof. yet. thanks Dr. LaForse
Great professor. Very vulgar but very funny. If you do your work (daily quizzes and translations) you should do well. Calls on every single student at least once a class and will call you out if you don't know what you're supposed to. Definitely recommend
I thought he was a wonderful teacher. The class is easy as long as you study and if you dont get an A your an idiot. Very good speaker and not boring at all
Makes lots of political comments during lecture
Very good prof., helpful and nice. works with you even when it's late at night. understanding and not at all judgemental. great prof! would love to have again next quarter!
Dr. Laforse excels as a professor in every way. He is intellingent, funny, and caring. His classes can be challenging, but we are here to get an education. I also had him for Latin, and I would recommend that any begining Latin student take his class. A+++
If you want to take a 7 page exam over the entire course and have him try to tell you to change your major to history and tell you to go to another state for school when you go in for help then go right on ahead and take his class.
Dr. Laforse was an awesom prof and I loved the slideshows with his multiple pics from his trips to Greece, it really made what we were studying come to life. I would definitely recommend him. (Although he does manage to weasel his own political and vulgar opinions in his lecture from time to time.
He's a nice guy and a good teacher. He is willing to help you outside of class if you just talk to him and ask for help. His lectures are always interesting. If you get offended easily, you might not want to take his class. Otherwise, I'd recommend him. Take good notes and you'll be fine.
Dr. LaForse is one of my favourite professors. His lectures are indepth and funny, and I've never learned more or quicker from any other prof. I can't imagine not enjoying his class.
Very enthusiastic about the subjects he teaches. Wants everyone to do well and understand. Has very creative methods of keeping students awake and entertained. Can be vulgar and very opinionated at times.
My favorite teacher thus far in college. Adds humor and fun to his classes. Take the notes, make a special note when he tells you to, most likely thats what will be on the test.
way too much information to look through and not enough clarity of what sort of things would be on the exams/quizzes. if history isn't your best subject, i don't recommend this class.
he is an awesome prof. you do have to take a lot of notes in his class and study a lot, but he makes the quizzes pretty easy--i mean, he tells you what's going to be on them. the books for the class are pretty pointless. just buy oedipus the king and don't get the other two text books...i maybe looked at them twice all quarter.
Dr. LaForse was my favorite professor in all of WSU. He's tough (you learn your stuff!); he's funny and interesting (worth going to class!); and he really knows his stuff (a good quality in a professor, lol).
The material was tough, but if you studied you were pretty well off. Hilarious teacher! He wasn't very hard, he is pretty clear at what he expects from you on tests. Fun class if you aren't offended by swearing or sarcasm... I guess he's had complaints but he does explain on the first day that he tends to swear.
Awesome teacher! Funny and interesting!! Go to class everyday and he'll just about tell you what he's going to ask on the quiz. Great Guy!
I never fell asleep once in LaForse's class. He's a good teacher with a witty personality. He shows neat pictures show and the test are cake if you go to class and study your notes. I didn't mind having him at 8:30 am...his class was my coffee for the day.
Great sense of humor. Go to class everyday and you might learn by accident. You do not have to read any of the books to get an A in the class. Hope you don't mind swearing because he is a New Yorker
Great. Loved him. Gets along with students well. Good sense of humor, keeps class going. I may be biased, being a HST major, but this class was great!
He was a good teacher. He loves what he teaches and it shows. I really liked him and the class was prety easy too!
Dr. Laforse is enthusiastic because he loves what he teaches. He has a great and funloving personality, and is definitely always willing to help, but you shouldn't need any help if you take good notes. The tests are not bad if you study.
amazing prof, most helpful person EVER. he WANTS u to get an A and will do everything he can to help. dirty mouth, but makes class interesting. study for Final early, its hard and 40% of ur grade. my friend wasnt even in the class but attended bc of how cool it was
Makes class very interesting. Requires a good amount of studying, but he is very clear on his expectations
Very good prof! He is really into what he's teaching and makes you interested. He tends to swear but he explains the first day he's from NY. I never used the books and still got A's-but you have to study! Quizzes are cake if you study but hard you don't. Plus the final is kinda hard, so study early! Interesting class!!
Dr. Laforse was a great prof! If you pay attention to his lectures ( which is easy cause he gives funny insights) and study for his test, it's an easy A. You do have to study though! He bugs you death about class participation!!! So speak up.
The class isn't an easy "A" gen-ed! He's difficult but after the first test, you get an idea of what he really wants, like "name the 4 wars during.." He's actually interesting to listen to, so it's not boring! I do recommend him!!!!
An amazing professor! Extremely intelligent and good looking, what a wonderful combination to see in class each day! Study like you should and pay attention in class and you won't have any problems. He makes learning the subject easy and enjoyable
I HATE THIS PROFESSOR..... WANTS TO PERSONALLY ATTACK ME WITH WORDS THATS FINE!!! HATE HIM AND HIS CLASS. -100 out of 10 for a teacher wise.
Over the years I have taken Dr. Laforse for 8 classes in Latin and Ancient Greek. I think he is fantastic but he is also very hard. My best advise is STUDY YOUR NARDS OFF! You want to spend at least 3 hours a day, every day, studying outside of class. He will help you, both in his office, on campus or even from his home (if you call him).
Sweet
Dr. Laforse was an awesome teacher. He was challenging but, he was a lot of fun. He is very funny and entertaining. Never a dull moment. Read the books and take notes. His exams were not that hard!! I would recommend taking his class!
Great professor! Can come off as a bit abrasive to some, but he does it to keep the class interesting. You won't come into class for one day without getting a good laugh. Keys to success with LaForse: Show up, pay attention, take notes. His quizzes encompass a lot of material, but I've taken FAR worse. Highly recommended. :)
Really wants you to like him, will take great pains to help you, loud and abrasive. Treat him like you think he's a great guy and he'll love you. Daily homework, and if you don't study, you will not do well in this class.
he's great
Hard, mean, fiesty, but an expert in his field
Laforse is a funny new yorker. Best teacher ever. I got an A+ by studying in class notes and Course Reserve readings for just one hour before every test. I learned a lot about Western Civ and I recommend this class to anyone who can take decent notes. MAKE FLASH CARDS!
Professor Laforse knows his stuff and should after so many years of teaching. you must study study study! and coming to class helps because he lets you know some things that will be on the quizzes and final. However, Laforse isnt clear what will be on the test and its hard to study everything w/o pointers!!
WAY too much modern politics for a Classics course. He can be great, and then turn into a total jerk 5 min later. Petty tyrant in the classroom, will FLIP OUT if you forget to turn off your phone or crinkle a snack wrapper. That said, he knows the material VERY well and grades fairly. His quizzes are tough but if you study you'll do fine.
Dr. Laforse is very helpful. All you need to do is go to class, read the material and study your notes. Quizzes & exams come directly from the notes. Just make sure to have your cell off - he hates disturbances.
rude, smart mouth. hates noises made by students while he is teaching and his tests are extremely hard. this class is not an easy A and requires a lot of studying out of class. he tries to make jokes during his lectures, but they are not funny, however they are rude. avoid him at all costs.
He's entertaining and helpful. For the first quiz he had anyone that didnt get a B go to a meeting with him and 4 other students. Averages the 3 best scores unless you did really bad on the first and then improves alot after. Jokes alot. He's curses alot so might not want to take him if it bothers you
I don't care what other people say about him, he's alright in my book. If you don't study and apply yourself of course you're not gonna do good. Personally I would prefer if more teachers were like him. I love dropping the f bomb in class just as much as he does. lol He's fair and knows his sh*t. Plus he's willing to meet with you if you need help.
I really liked this professor. He was funny and knew what he was talking about. He is a little rude to some students but nothing someone cant get over. Tests are way easy, he basically gives you the answers on the review...make a timeline it will be very helpful! only time i used the book was for the maps...STUDY YOUR MAPS really. he will help you.
he is the coolest professor ive ever hard. can be a little hard on students, but doesnt hold grudges. if you put ur study time in & come to class you'll do fine. its not an easy a, it does take a decent amount of studying but he makes the material interesting. he is also extremely helpful, will send you extra notes and answers questios very clearly
interesting class. hes a funny guy. tests are pretty fair he tells u whats going to be on them before hand. he is very helpful and hes a nice guy. I would take him again for other classes if given the chance
Bring your laptop and strap on your skirt for this class. A LOT of notes, no real text book. I tried talking to you him one day about getting some notes in advance, he said he doesn't do it, but harps on the class for not coming to asking for any. Too much time and energy for a gen ed. Good Professor though, just not for me.
GREAT CLASS!!!! He is the best history teacher Wright State has to offer. His class is super easy, and entertaining, and he is always available to help.
OK, he does grade fairly. He shows up on time. However, he can be quite offensive. I felt uncomfortable in his class often. Has an obvious prejudice against Christians. He says in class that he wants to challenge you and your beliefs, but last I checked, "challenging" does not mean making mean spirited snipes.
Great prog. Very interesting class. Uses a lot of curse words thoughout the qtr. If you get offended easily you shouldn't take the class. But if you like greek and roman history, want to learn more about rhetoric, and can handle hearing the fbomb 5 or 6 times a class this class is perfect for you!
uses a lot of curse words and makes fun of people during class. openly says things that would offend christians. gets off topic often.
Best teacher I've had so far into my college career. Cares about his students and their grades. I wish i could take it again.
He is a very easy teacher. Show up to class and do the readings and his class will be simple. He is funny which makes it fun.
Mr.L does give a outline of possible questions for test. However most of it is not on test. His class is boring. You are expected to memorize dates. He will put you on blast in front of the class if your late or leave early. He also puts all powerpoint notes online. So you don't need to buy the book. You can borrow it from the library for free.
Really knows what he's talking about. He likes to joke around and keep a student-like rapport with his class. There's nothing wrong with a professor swearing and poking fun at people.
Christians need to stop complaining. You guys offend other groups, but get angry is someone may say something that slightly offends you. That said, amazing professor.
he is mean but kinda funny sometimes
Tried so hard and still got a c.
Dr. Laforse is a great professor. I learned tons of information in his class. Quizzes require a lot of studying. The final is comprehensive and require tons of studying. Dr L is hilarious, I love him!
Just a straight beast funny as hell and loves to make fun of students!! There was alot of homework and the tests were in the blue book, but if u go to class every day there will be know problem getting a B or better
Know your dates and maps for tests. He thinks dropping the f-bomb in class is charming, but I found it unprofessional. He doesn't try to hide his anti-God, anti-Christian mentality and doesn't care to be personally offensive. The class itself was interesting. It would have been a favorite class if he would have shown some (class).
He was the best professor ever! He told you what to study for the quizzes, never went over a lot at one time so everything was easy to remember. He was very helpful if you go to his office and is really interested in his students and wants you to pass! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!
He is a charismatic teacher who makes the class very enjoyable. He does a great job of explaining everything. Highly recommended
Willing to help if you need it. Class isnt mandatory but EXTREMELY Helpful to attend. Teaches great, awesome atmosphere to learn in. Uses profanity alot but makes good jokes. Knows alot about the topics and content. Really enjoyed him and would recomend to anyone.
Dreaded this class, ended up earning lots and having a blast! He uses lots of profanity but he KNOWS HIS STUFF. If you actually want to learn this, take him. Tests were all essay but you'll be well prepared if you read and prep using the study guide. Very fair, more than willing to help if you just ask! Fun group project!
Laforse is hilarious! Great class, he makes it very interesting, really laid back atmosphere. He is definitely not afraid to speak his mind. Be prepared to remember a lot of dates but other than that test are easy! If you go to class you'll get an easy GPA boost, he's always ready to help! I would take his classes again for sure.Knows his stuff!
Funny as hell. Great teacher who makes even the most boring and repetitive stuff extremely fun and interesting
Laforse is great! I really learned a lot about Greek/ Roman society. If you take down all the notes and apply it to his study guide before the quiz, then there should be no reason why you would'nt get no less than a B. An A is attainable!! STUDY!! He knows his stuff!
I took intro to greek andn roman. Learned alot, hes a great teacher. Funny aswell.
Super easy class. exams were basically memorizing the notes. attendance is VITAL. the list of topics he sends out: memorize all the info on that list and u will ace all the exams. Hilarious professor too. He notices if you have epic handwriting or something distinctive to remember each student regardless if it's a large class :D
Absolutely phenomenal teacher. Hilarious, and is able to relate topics to real world experiences. EXTREMELY helpful and will alter class to help understanding. gives study guides that are relevant to tests etc.
Dr. L is an amazing teacher. He really cares about his students. The tests are designed so that you pass because he tells you exactly what is on the test. He is available to talk during his office hours and gives you great advice not just about school, but about everything. He is my favorite professor at WSU!!! Take him if you can!
I have had Laforse in CLS, and he is a wonderful teacher. He is extremely bright concerning the topic, and his knowledge goes beyond Classics. He is very helpful and encouraging, but he certainly expects you to pull your own weight. The only negative thing is that he curses and makes dirty jokes, but I have been working with him on that.
Good prof, you can tell he loves what he's teaching about. There were 5 tests. 4 quizzes and 1 final. You can fail all the quizzes, get an A on the final and get an A in the class. The final is cumulative, and it is A LOT of info. Classes aren't mandatory, but you don't want to miss the information. Overall, not too bad.
He is good at making the material interesting during lectures. His final is huge and requires a lot of studying, but he gives out nice review sheets. He is on the unprofessional side.
Fun and informative; really enthusiastic about the ancient Greek/Roman world and very willing to go deeper into topic if asked. Good rapport with class, gives great study guides. Know your dates and maps and you'll do great. Highly recommend.
Absolutely an Awesome professor! Very laid back but is very encouraging of his students. Fair in all aspects of the class and very funny. I would take another class with him given the choice. Tests are very difficult. Know dates and the maps and you'll do fine.
He is not funny, just trying too hard. If you want to keep your GPA ~ forget it. My less favorite teacher so far. He doesn't curve. Very time consuming memorization ~ he talks about his memory is not that good anymore however expects us to remember over 220 questions on comprehensive test.
Do not take this prof! Class time is useless and he takes points off for missing. He teaches like a freshman high school teacher
He is a great teacher.
Dr. Laforse is a very good professor and he knows his stuff. However this is not an easy passing grade. You MUST study! The only thing that I did not care for is that your final is 55% of you grade. Class is not mandatory, but I would encourage you to go because if you miss one class, you missed out on a lot of information.
Easy and fun class! Cool professor!
Laforse is an great prof. He is actually passionate about the things he teaches which makes it more interesting. It is not the easiest class, so don't take just to get an easy A. One of the greatest prof. at WSU
Very easy for people who can memorize dates, names, places, and people. His lectures aren't mandatory, but you won't be tempted to miss because he is an engaging lecturer. He makes a class on the ancient world entertaining and relevant. I got 100% on all quizzes and a 98% on the final. Take good notes, study, and you will be fine.
His class was all lecture. When he was lecturing he was making fun of students or people in general. if you're not super into Greek and Roam history, don't take this class. He did give a few options for extra credit, make sure you take advantage of them. Best of luck...
If you are looking for an easy A don't take him, his class is pure memorization, and I mean A LOT of memorization. All tests, and its not even worth going to the extra credit, went every single one and then he said at the end he would only give us the extra points if we were a couple of points away from the next grade letter. Take someone else!
My biggest problem with the class was the maps. I didnt exactly get the grades i wanted but im horrible at studying.. pretty interesting lectures, very helpful if asked (also offers), Studying is pretty much the key to getting an a or b.
Super rude to students and makes fun of them. He acts like he likes you and then publicly makes fun of you. He mocks people. I made appointments to meet with him (2 days before a test) and he blew me off. Only reason I passed is because I memorized maps and notes. He thinks he is funny but he is not. If you are thinking of taking this class, dont.
Dr. Laforse is a good professor hands down. He's not the best, but he gives you everything and makes things very fun and interesting. Yes he does make fun of his students, but it's all in good fun. He used to make of me because I told him Rome was better than Greece when he thought it was vice versa. If you aren't sensitive then take his class.
Dr. Laforse is awesome. Reading some reviews on here I was hesitant but I am glad I took him. Summer class so my experience may have been different. 5 quizzes and a final. Drops one quiz. Sends a review sheet each week for the quiz. Clearly outlines in lecture what to expect. Not for the faint hearted, he says what is on his mind. 10/10!!
Curses a lot and is too inappropriate
He's funny and makes jokes
Dr. Laforse is a great professor, he keeps the class interesting and really cares about what he is teaching. With that said, the class is still extremely difficult and it takes a lot of studying to memorize all the dates, events, and locations he wants you to know.
Took this class 2 years ago. He is an excellent teacher. I failed Wolpert's class and had to retake. Thank god he was my teacher. Bruce taught me more about Greek and Roman Culture without assigning numerous writing assignments. Just go to class and take notes. The usual.
This was my favourite class this semester. Your grade is based only on the quizzes given throughout the semester and the final exam, but he is a very lenient grader if you show that you have studied and are trying. Laforse is very funny and definitely makes the class interesting enough to keep your attention.
He just wants you to be able to know how to study after you take his class, his quizzes are a little hard, you just have to know what to study but he gives you soooo much information. Hes a cool guy
LaForse really wants his students to succeed and accessible outside of class. You can tell he loves his field of research and tries to have fun with it. If you're taking this class for credit, his is the one to go with. This quizzes are the difficult, but his tests have the same questions. Get into a study group if you can!
Professor Laforse is a great guy that actually wants to see his students succeed. He gives multiple quiz reviews, handouts to guide his lectures and is extremely quick at responding to emails. He does like to lecture, but he is fun to listen to. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
He is understanding and funny! Very caring about your education!
Having Professor Laforse my freshman year was challenging but very rewarding. He cares about your education and wants to help you learn. After the first quiz he pulled everyone that scored less than an 85% to his office hours to discuss how to better study for the individual. He was also very amusing during class and kept it lively at all times.
Laforse is one of the best professors at Wright State. His class will teach you much about Greco-Roman Culture while encouraging self-learning. Grades depended entirely on short quizzes so get ready to memorize! Also, he gave extra credit for attending AAUP and Classics Club meetings. Caring: still remembers me from a class of 100+ from Fall 2018
Dr.L is a nice guy with a good sense of humor. He also responds very quickly to emails. However, while I got an A on every discussion post and quiz, since I got a B on the final, I got a B in the class. That was very shocking as he didn't make that clear. Very frustrating.
In Dr.Laforse recorded lectures you can tell he genuinely enjoys what he is teaching! There were 5 discussion posts, 5 exam/quizzes, and 1 final exam. All of which were easy to finish and pass! & he was quick at responding to emails! Def recommend!
Laforse uses the software for the class effectively and is clear on what you will learn in the Class. The subject is very interesting and as long as you pay attention and keep up with the work, you will do fine. Glad I took his Class.
I would advise not taking this class if you have no interest in Greek or Roman history. Only five quizzes, attendance isn't mandatory, but a very note heavy class. He's very loud and often vulgar. Though this doesn't bother me, he did make a joke about men genitalia which made me quite uncomfortable. He's a good prof otherwise, just not for me.
He can be tough on you, but will work with you if you want to succeed. If you are not enthusiastic about history, I wouldn't recommend it. the work is not weighted. EX: exam grade = 40% final grade. He can be a fast, vulgar speaker. Yet I respect his teaching. Please read the material provided for the class. Not many ppl did that and struggled.
Professor Laforse makes the subject matter engaging and provides helpful feedback. While the course can be challenging, using resources like unstuck study and attending study sessions can really pay off. Overall, a rewarding class.
quizzes were worth 40% of my grade and the final was 60%. that stressed me out a ton. but he explained that if you do really good on the quizzes, and bomb the final. he will make your final grade your average quiz grade. overall was really funny, but a super heavy note taking class. take the class with friends if possible if you plan to skip.
