Dr. Matson makes learning chemistry so much fun! He's easygoing with the students. I had a great time taking his class.

He is a nice guy in class. He is not that helpful during his office hours because he will not make eye contact with you at all. He can also be a stickler when it comes to grading...every point counts.
I don't think he's a very good teacher. I think I understand things in class, but he doesn't explain them well enough that I know what I'm doing when I do my homework.
He makes jokes during class that keep me awake and help to make class kinda fun
Had a graduate seminare with Dr. Mattson. He is a very instructor who truly cares about what he is teaching.
Do all the work it helps. He is willing to help outside of class
Dr. Matson is a good guy who knows his stuff. I personally think he is somewhat hard to follow in lecture, however.
He knows what hes talking about- sometimes he moves really fast though. Don't get too far behind.
Not a bad teacher, but if you're a guy he probably won't like you very well.
Pretty easy teacher, likes to tell jokes. He gives you lots of practice problems, so you should do alright on the tests. Class isnt too hard.
He is very helpful and the homework helps for the tests. He sends grade reports after every test including the final so you always know how you're doing. good teacher who really cares if you do well.
He is a good teacher with excellent worksheetsto prepare you for tests, but explanations of things can be a bit too metaphoric at times.
UNFAIR when it comes to grades...
He is a good teacher and just an overall nice guy. Don't try to walk all over his niceness and you will get along fine!
very enthusiastic and helpful. i haven't opened the book all year. he covers everything in class, provides practice problems, and makes up a practice test that covers everything before each exam. also comes to class early to answer questions.

Gives reading guides for each chapter, be sure to do them. Very clear and easy to understand. Has a sense of humor that makes learning Chem fun. By far the best Chem teacher here.
MaTTSON ROCKS THE SHIZZLES..
Doc M is always willing to help especially by answering questions before class..be sure to go to this and do your packet and you will get an easy A!
I'm stupid, so this class was ridiculously hard for me, but he is an amazing teacher that deserves credit for his work. Take him if you get the opportunity...fully worth it. He almost converted me to premed...but then I realized I still couldn't do it...so I didn't convert. Good man.
He is a very nice guy who is always willing to help you. He will even put together little extra credit exercises to help a class when he sees the average dropping low. If you do all of the packets and pretests you should be fine for his tests.
very good teacher. I still had to read a little, but very willing to go over any problems you have. TAKE HIM
Good teacher, easy class.
Doc M made Gen Chem II way easier than it could've been. Extremely fair grader, gives you lots of opportunity for bonus points, and is pretty funny. Take him for chemistry if possible!
Mattson is the best Gen Chem professor at Creighton. He tests can be a little tricky but if you do the practice problems he gives you, test material will be nothing new to you. If you're the type that likes to learn through doing actual problems, he's for you. Take advantage of his office hours
he is a super exciting professor who is much less likely to put you to sleep. you can learn through practice problems. he is pretty helpful although sometimes comes off contradictingly. found him extremely inspiring.
A**hole when it comes to points...
Dr. Mattson is a good guy. He really tries to make lectures interesting. He gives out practice tests and practice problems, which are usually harder than the actual test.
This was my favorite chem teacher here! He really cares about the students and really wants to help. Do the problems and work hard and you'll be fine!
He's really enthusiastic and a fun teacher! I reccomend that everyone take him because if you can put the time into the class you'll be fully prepared for whatever chem class you take later
I find him to be very interesting. He makes chemestry much more interesting for me. I think his tests are fair, and I find this class to be fairly easy.

Doc M is the nicest guy and always makes the class interesting, does lots of fun experiments. The tests can get tricky but if you do the study guides you're ok.
Easily one of the best professors for Gen Chem. He is really good at explaining everything and gives you practice tests so you know exactly what to expect on the tests. He also holds morning study session if you need extra help. Overall, a great teacher.
I personally think the man is way overrated. He skips over stuff that other teachers cover which you may need the next semester. The tests questions are kind of abstract. Nice guy just not the best at covering all the topics of chemistry
This man is definately over-rated. I wouldnt take him for Gen Chem. He can be very nice at times but can also be a jerk. He skips out on lots of stuff you'll need to know for Chem 2. Didn't prepare us for at least 2 of the exams and over 20 some students failed 2 of his exams, one of which he took the blame for not teaching all the material. :(
Cakewalk
worthless, the guy is an idiot....if ure a girl he will do anything for u, if u are a guy study ur ass off
hes a jerk in person. he puts on an act in front of everyone, but wont help u worth**** in person.
AVOID if at all possible. He can be a cool person, but he's not a great professor. CHM 204 is a lot harder than 203, so you need a professor who is clear on his lectures, and Mattson is not it! Visiting him during office hours won't help you either. He won't explain anything, he'll just tell you, "We've been learning it all this semester."
I had heard such great things about him before I took this course, but I found him to have very unorganized lectures, difficult tests, and an unapproachable attitude. Some people like him, but I guess that just shows how variable this site can be...
I was excited to take him, but was disappointed in the end. Funny sense of humor, but was not approachable AT ALL. He would make you feel stupid for asking your questions. Take someone else if you can.
I purposely took him because of how people talked about him. they said he was an amazing teacher and easy too. given the fact that i had a really hard teacher for CHM 203 i figured this would be a breeze. he made chm not fun, i lost the interest i had in it. the experiments he showed were horrible. tests are easy you if takes notes and study har
TAKE ANDERSON. mattson is terrible
Don't take him for second semester, the topics get harder and he does not explain them very well. Expect to do homework almost every night, which he collects and grade. Good thing though- he gives very clear study guides for each test.
Don't take mattson second semester. you get homework every night, and sometimes the homework would take you more than 3 hours and 11 sheets of paper and you only get 7 points... its ridiculous. Homework and quizzes are constant and they are worth so few points you want to shoot yourself - they're pointless for the amount of time you spend on it
really weird sense of humor. i had snipp first semester and dr mattson was the opposite! he is so organized, i could understadn everything he wrote on the board. if you can't learn from just the book he's a good prof to take.
Doc Mattson is a really nice guy and was always willing to help. His tests aren't hard at all if you do the homework and the practice exam. The material isn't that difficult either.
Decent guy but talks way too much on how things happen and doesn't go much on the homework aor other problems if you like hearing about how things happen take him but if you just want a professor to go straight to the homework problems not the guy you want to take.
Prof. Mattson is a good teacher, he really knows what he's talking about. Must attend class because the material is difficult, and some of his exmaples in class are used in the test, plus he does experiments. Test are straight forward, but manage time. Do the homework, b/c he gets tests questions form there and you sometimes get extra credit.
Great teacher. Does demonstrattions sometimes. Fire Fridays are great :) The tests are only one page but are pretty difficult. Do the homework because he gives extra credit and uses some of those questions on the tests. Go to class and ask questions if you don't understand. Very helpful if you go to his office, too.
He is a really nice guys who is always willing to help and listen. DO THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS!!! the testa are pretty easy but you basically have to teach yourself the material. you will be okay till the final comes... then watch out. If you are good at learning on your own- i would take him
I love him! He is a wonderful, outgoing, helpful teacher. Go to his office. Do the homework. Study really hard for the tests (they are always on Fridays, which is nice). FAVORITE TEACHER! Better than other chem professors for 206.
Doc M. definitely knows what he's talking about. He comes to class 30 minutes early to answer questions from the homework, which is really nice especially before an exam. He's also pretty quirky and throws in odd, but funny jokes
I think that Dr. Mattson is the best Chemistry teacher at Creighton. He gives you practice tests and study guides that really help you study for a test. Chemistry is not my strong subject, but I came out with a decent grade. He also does cool experiments in class. I would recommend him for sure!
Amazing teacher! Took both of his classes, takes his time to explain everything in full detail. Very helpful, although a little intimidating. He has your attention during class and occasionally cracks some jokes. Took him both semesters! I didn't put much effort into the class and still did great. Take him for lab as well!
Dr. Mattson is the best! He is so nice and sometimes kind of funny during class. You MUST take him for chem 1. If you don't understand something, he will take the time to explain it to you personally in his office. His tests are straight forward and the tests from last year are on his site which is the best way to study. Take his class!
Mattson is a horrible teacher!! He gives practice test which are nothing like the real tests! And he puts info on the test that he says he will not! Spends more time trying to be funny than teaching! Save yourself the stress and take anderson.
Mattson is AWESOME. I totally love his class. He does fire fridays, says funny comments and performed cool experiments in class, so it never gets boring. Grades are based on tests only, so do hmk and the practice tests (they do help), you should be fine. When he suggests u do some type of experiments, do it, u may get extra credits.
Dr. Mattson is an awesome professor! He does a great job of explaining the concepts and his tests are very easy. He gives you a study guide ahead of time and all of his old tests are posted online so you have something to study from. Take his class!
TAKE HIM! It is possible to ace his tests as long as you do your homework, understand study guide, and study the previous tests from the last 3-4 yrs. He uses a lot of diagrams which is how I learn best, and will meet 1/2 hr before class to do bk problems. He has NO recitation like the rest of the gen chem teachers, so it frees up your schedule
He is a great teacher. Chemistry is his passion and it really shows when he is teaching the class. He has fire Fridays that always keeps the class interesting. He is a very funny man too. Overall great teacher.
Dr. Mattson overall is a good professor. Tries too hard to be funny though. He collects hw (announced and unannounced) which makes you have to spend hours doing them. There are group work activities now, which can be good and bad. I didn't like groupwork or having to turn in hw, but it helps I guess.
Supposedly he is the best chemistry teacher to have, but I had a hard time in his class. Just like every chem class, expect to spend hours everyday doing homework. Funny teacher, and keeps the class interesting with "fire fridays"- he blows stuff up.
great teacher. although i learned this stuff b4. test really easy until the last1 idk why. hw is long but not imposs do some everyday, dont slack. unless u r that type who can. (i often did) not imposs to do well in this class. read the book do the hw and go over notes everyday even if its for 10-15 min make sure u know the stuff.
I did well in his class but studied A LOT outside of class. He isn't very good in explaining concepts. 79 + 23 = 100 for him (which I think is unfair) I feel bad for people who don't have a strong chem background.. easy for those who do, will be a struggle if this is new info for you. recommend doing the old tests and the study guide
AMAZING PROFESSOR. The man walks on water. Is always in his office and ready to help. He makes it really easy to understand the material. The man is increidble.
This was the best chemistry class I've ever taken! He is a very sweet old man who makes hilarious jokes frequently! His tests are exactly like the lectures and allows extra credit, which really helps! He does interesting experiments in class about everyday which made the class fun! He is extremely dedicated to his students and emails your grades shortly after a test. Best chemistry teacher at creighton! Take him!
Dr. Mattson is the best Chemistry teacher to have coming into Creighton! He is a true Gen Chem I teacher and prepares you very well and helps you adjust to college along the way. He makes you feel welcome and makes you love Chemistry.! Best alternates if his class is full: Dobberpuhl, Stone, and Parsons.
He is pretty easy, except he is not very helpful.
Between all of your choices for CHM 203 professors, take Mattson. He explains things very well in class. You have to study for his tests really well as they are not super easy, but a lot easier than other professors tests.
Every week, he performed an experiment. Weird sense of humor. Rarely collects homework, but your grade is based on how you perform in the exams.
His class is based on your exam scores so grades can be all over the place because each exam depends on your understanding of his questions & material. He is better 1st semester.
Your grade is based on exams only. You have 4 tests plus the final. He is easier first semester. However, he teaches his lab second semester and is super helpful and much easier than Gunn for lab.
The easiest chemistry & chemistry lab teacher ever. Chemistry will be a breeze if you are somewhat familiar with it, otherwise it will still be a significantly easier experience that you will get compared to what the other professors offer.
Very straightforward class and good professor. He makes sense, is very clear and wants you to do well. Take Dr. Mattson!
Doc M is a great professor! His lectures and exams are straightforward. He has flexible office hours and will help with anything! Take the lab with him, he makes it fun and straightforward. Overall, Doc M is great!
Class is composed of lectures and daily folder activities to earn points toward the exams. There are 4 exams and a final, but he drops the lowest grade. His lectures and exams are very straightforward. There are no trick questions. His practice exams are incredibly helpful. Doc M also teaches lab which is nice to have the same instructor for both.
Dr. Mattson was absolutely a gem. I took him for General Chemistry 1 and it was surprisingly a great class. He made the class more enjoyable with his hilarious sense of humor and "Fire Friday." Only downside of his class is that he is sometimes confusing and doesn't teach the material very well.
Dr. Mattson is by far my favorite prof I've taken. As an incoming freshman being nervous for chemistry, which was not my strongest subject in high school, he made the difficult subject light-hearted and fun. He has a witty sense of humor and is very willing to help student who ask for it. He does get confusing, but if asked he will clarify.
Dr. Mattson is a nice guy but his class is kind of all over the place. I took him 1st semester and he was so easy and clear about everything. Second semester, his tests got much harder and he stopped giving partial credits on questions. He's not a horrible teacher, just take someone else, there are better teachers here. Especially for 2nd semester
Very boring lectures and final grade is dependent upon your 5 test scores. My advice is to take a different professor. There's no reason as to why Gen Chem II has to be as hard as this guy makes it.
Mattson is probably the worst professor I've had at Creighton. I benefited from not going to class and just reading the book because his lectures are so confusing. Sometimes I wonder if he even understands the material himself. Your grade is entirely determined by 4 tests and a final. The only good part is that he gives a nice curve on the final.
Best general chemistry teacher! Tests are very similar to the old exams. That is how I studied and received an A.
Doc M is my favorite teacher ever! I was nervous about chemistry because I didn't have a strong background, but he knows it so well that he's able to dumb it down. He's also HILARIOUS. His lab is fun and way easier than everyone else's. His tests are fair. He sets you up for success and doesn't leave you hanging. He teaches what you need to know.
I had Dr. Mattson for CHM 203, 204, 205, 206. He was very caring and available for office hours. He gives worksheets everyday in class with book problems listed on the bottom. He posts his worksheet answers online which is helpful, although worksheets and book problems are optional. Your grade is solely on exam scores.
Dr. Matson is a wonderful professor. He gives notes, he gives assignments that arent graded but are for practice, he gives book problems, a full day of review before an exam, and several old tests that you can do. Dr. Matson is always willing to help students. You have to work for a good grade in this class, but he is a phenomenal teacher.
Good at explaining things, sometimes goes off on tangents and teaches things you don't need to know. Do the worksheets, they help. Five exams, then a final exam. Exams are okay if you know your stuff. Have to pay attention and take notes.
All I can say is that Bruce Mattson is a REAL GEM! He is so caring for his students and makes lecture fun with his sense of humor! Tests aren't too bad so long as you do a few practice exams and the worksheets that he hands out. He is honestly one of my favorite professors at Creighton
Mattson is a cute, funny, and kind old man, but I can't say that he is my favorite professor. His lectures are disorganized, so do not expect pretty notes. His exams are straightforward, and I was able to ace them all by doing and re-doing the practice exams from years past; because of this, I was exempt from the final, which was a nice surprise.
Dr. Mattson is the sweetest professor by far. If you are struggling at any point in the class he is very helpful and accesible. The course was very straight forward and yields your daily dose of ole man jokes.
Dr. M's a great guy. His lectures are sprinkled with humor which make chm bearable. His HW worksheets help (not graded), but I stopped doing them near the end of the semester and turned out fine. The practice exams really help, do them before every exam. For lab, he has online presentations for ALL the experiments, and they are so useful. USE THEM.
He is a very old school professor who uses the chalk board. He walks fast and doesn't really allow much time for taking notes or asking questions. He is very soft spoken and faces the chalk board more than the students.
Moves very quickly so dont worry too much about taking notes in class as he posts them online. Focus more on homework & practice exams. Provides a lot of material to succeed independently as he is not the nicest or most patient person 1-on-1. But for scale, in the chemistry department he is the more approachable prof. Breakfast club helps loads.
Dr. Mattson is by far the best teacher I've ever had at Creighton. I cannot speak more highly of him. His practice exams are exactly like his real exams and if you do all of them (or even half of them) I can promise you that you will get an A. Additionally, if you don't understand something, his office hours are extremely accessible. I went weekly.
He is a really great guy and professor. Because of COVID, he let us use the internet for tests. The homework also went towards your test grade, so even if you completely bomb a test if you did well on the homework your test grade will go up.
Mattson is a great guy, but a pretty terrible professor. He stumbles throughout his lectures and is quite organized. However, his class is incredibly easy and as long as you have a decent chemistry background, you should have no problem getting an A. His tests are open internet; dont waste time going to class.
Usually had to go back to old chemistry stuff to learn it because his teaching didn't help sometimes. Liked his class because the tests were open note/internet, which was very helpful. Sometimes the tests were pretty lengthy, but sometimes I finished early. Doing homework wasn't required but really boosted exam scores.
I cannot count the number of times students caught mistakes in Mattson's lectures. At least every other week he would have to inform the class and update them for corrections of slides (once even days before a test) which is incredibly frustrating. If you take him first semester do not expect to learn anything. DO NOT TAKE SECOND SEMESTER. awful
Dr. Mattson retired Spring 2022. I miss him! I did not know at the time, but Creighton Chemistry department has actually gotten worse since his departure! Dr. Mattson ran Gen Chem the exact way that is should be run! I wish he can come back and teach! Creighton Chemistry really botched hiring his replacement! It's on them not Mattson!
