A very manageable course!!
He rocks! Knows exactly what he's talking about, and can explain it to you!
great teacher...very personable
Pretty good, pretty personable

one of the best professors i've ever had. such a nice guy, very knowledgeable
Very nice guy, goes slow and tries his best to explain things in a way that you understand. Such a sweet guy! Take him if at all possible
awesome person, great teacher!!!! loved his class. take him for sure
Funny guy!! Helps you pay attention in class! He knows how to explain everything well and takes his time with the tough stuff! Great teacher!
Very easy to understand and makes the class fun
Is not helpful outside of class
funny guy, will help you if you need it and is explains things well if you have a question on something.
He is alright, but his exams are kinda tough. But he is one of the better chem teachers. He has mult choice test and they are worth 4 points each so that kinda sucks. But he tries to make things easy.
Somewhat boring lectures, but if you are into chemistry its a good class. Will prepare you well for the another chemistry class.
boring, but easy
he is NEVER available for help, tries to trick you...but he does explain things thoroughly. generally, he's a nice guy--but would be a better professor if he was available more often.
ok, but hard tests
He explains things rather well, picks examples on tests that are on the homework or similar to the ones on the homework. Can be funny. Goes through things quickly at the end before tests. Overall decent teacher.
Good teacher. Go to lectures and take notes, he explains everything. He has practice tests online that are almost identical to the real thing, study those and you'll do fine on the test.
Thought he was a very good teacher. Explained everything very well. Gives lots of worksheets but most you do not have to hand in. He gives very good notes and gives lots of expamples. Tests are not overlly difficult. Overall, he is a very good teacher who moves slow and isn't very hard.
I definately recommend him for organic chem lab. He's funny and very helpful. He grades easy and will help you with the homework assignments and lab reports so you can get them all right berfore handing them in.
He is funny sometimes, I will give him that, but he is a bad teacher for my learning style. He goes very fast, is NEVER there for help, and is not willing to help. The material he teaches is unclear so make sure you have some background in chem. I would not recommend him.
He posts old exams for studying, gives homework but helps you with it in discussion and tells you when quizes are. overall, pretty decent professor i would definately take him again
I heard that if you go to his office to get help he isn't that friendly, but seems like a good teacher in class. Makes CHM easier than a lot of teachers-- a relief.
excellent teacher. He is not afraid to laugh at himself. He goes through plenty of examples and he holds a review session before you hand in graded assignments-easy points. Exams are straight from notes, worksheets, and practice exams. Excellent for lab.
Dr. Osterby is a great professor. He uses MANY examples and gives out practice exams that are extremely similar to the real one. Tests are straight foward, no tricky business. Will answer any homework question in class. Would advise him for any chem.
It was his first time teaching 104; he made tons of mistakes but he could have made it a lot harder. I heard he's not too helpful when you go to his office, but other than that, he's a good teacher to take.
VERY disorganized. He lost 2 of my quizzes, so i asked him what grades i got on them...he opened his gradebook and says "oh, i guess i didnt record any of those quizzes yet"--he handed them back to the students w/out recording the grades and he never re-collected them! So, yes, the quizzes may be easy, but are you REALLY getting credit for them???
probably the easiest general chem teacher you could take...
He uses ONLY examples, but doesn't show you how to apply your skills to other types of problems-so you get to the test and a problem he didn't show an example on and you are lost! He's totally disorganized, not helpful in or out of class, but he's hilarious!
I like Osterby for the most part. O-chem is a brutal course regardless, but I think he teaches it pretty well. Very organized, gives you an outline for each chapter and goes right in order. Has review sessions b4 every worksheet is due and every test. He gives you all the answers at the review before the ws is due! 100% clear on what's expected

I never had to study for this class. Worksheets and quizzes were accurate for the exams, and they were pretty easy in general. Not a hard workload either, just enough to help you understand the material and make sure you know what your'e doing. He is this old guy who is funny in his own little way. One of the best professors to take for this class.
Osterby is fabulous. He goes rather slowly and explains things well. I think Osterby is as good as it gets when it comes to study chemistry. Plus, he is actually really funny. Take him!
Against the Prof's I had at my previous school, he is borderline. He is a good guy in class it seems. He uses good examples and tries hard. NEVER go in to get help...you are just wasting your time. You are better off going to your lab guy, that is what I did. If he is the best teacher here, I am glad I am leaving again.

Not a very nice guy. accused me of cheating on exam for looking at clock. enjoyed publicly humiliating students for various reasons. Difficult class.
I loved this class, but then again i also like chemistry-so. He made the lecture go by quickly, and was pretty clear about concepts and stuff like that. You get to use notecards which is really helpful, and he gives you lots of old practice exams to prepare for exams. Nice professor, knows what he's talking about
Definitely take him if you're not very good in chem. He explains everything very in depth so everyone can understand it. Lots of examples that will help you on the exams. As long as you can do the practice worksheets and practice exams you will do fine.
Not approachable and if you have a question in class he will make you wish you hadn't asked. Difficult class (but that's to be expected), however he didn't seem like he cared how the students did.
He really doesn't explain why things happen, so it makes it difficult to understand some of the material, because according to him it just happens. I do admit he is kinda funny which keeps things interesting at times.
Great Guy!! Made the class great

makes chemistry fun and tells jokes in class to help pass the time. Uses A LOT of examples in lecture but through lab and discussion you learn the material. Don't be afraid to ask questions and just go over the practice problems he suggests. Lots of worksheets, quizzes, and 4 tests but if you bomb one its ok. Very considerate.. would suggest him!!!
Good Teacher for a subject not many people like. If you study, you'll be fine. I had to retake this course, and I found this teacher to be way better.
not approachable outside of class, but does a lot of examples in lecture. his tests arent too bad, but the point system for them is unfair-doesnt always give partial-credit and has MC questions worth 4 pts. worksheets and practice worksheets help a lot. dont need to read text
Dr. Osterby is a pretty good teacher. He gives a lot of examples to work from and allows a notecard for each test! (5 for the final!) Some concepts are hard but he explains them decently. Beware of the multiple chioce section...it will get you every time!
Osterby is by far the best chem prof I have ever had. He is clear about what he wants you to know and is very good one on one (when helping with chemistry). I strongly suggest taking advantage of his help sessions after labs. You have to put work into the class to get an A. Wish I had him for my previous chem classes.
He's a great guy and really makes Chemistry enjoyable. I heard from others that he was bland and his class was bad, but after experiencing him myself I found that they were COMPLETELY wrong! He jokes to help pass the time, and he uses a LOT of examples and practice stuff to make sure you understand every last problem. Notecards on tests too!
Osterby is a great Professor to take if you have a hard time with Chemistry. He offers worksheets for point, easier quizzes in lab and lecture, as well as exams. Labs count for point too, so you grades don't rely solely on your exams. Nice, funny guy who makes me laugh when he scratches his head like a mad scientist. Lots of examples for your notes
Great prof. Kept me awake for a summer class at 8AM. Really easy tests, as long as you do the study guide problems and look at the practice exams. You can use a note card, but if you do the study guide problems, you won't see anything on the exams that you don't know how to handle.
He was a bad teacher and I didnt like his teaching. He didnt teach in a sensible order and is so dry and annoying to listen to. I would suggest finding someone better. I loved chem in High school then I took him and changed my major. You can do better. Seriously, please dont take him.
Great teacher, an overall easy "A". His tests are a joke.
If you learn by examples he's a good teacher, otherwise good luck. Definitely need to have background knowledge on chem to understand things because don't try asking him for help.
Osterby is cool, makes sure you know your stuff...tests are a breeze
I hate chem&was failing this class but i passed..I would recommend him to anyone. He's fairly easy, remember this is chem you get out of it what you put in.I dont think that he was unreasonable, fair grader, taught well, made us laugh @7:45 in the morning. He had simple wksts&if u studied for tests and quizzes they were pretty easy too. GOod-take him
If you learn by writing your own notes and not being able to relate back on d2l this is your class. He also never lets you do the problem, he just does it and writes the answer. Not impossible but he is what he is and he isn't going to change.
I would definitely reccommend him. He gets the job done. All the tests/quizzes/homework are relevant to what is being taught in lecture. And while he isn't very approachable, he gives a good, clear lecture and will answer a lot of your questions in discussion.
Overall he is a good teacher. He uses more example problems to teach rather than solidly defining things. You get a notecard for each test which is really helpful and he gives you exams from the previous year to practice with. With all of the study materials and problems he provides it is a pretty easy B if you do the work.
Nice guy, incredibly knowledgeable. Do the problem sets and go over the problems he has in class and it should be at least a solid B if you put in some effort.
Great Chem Teacher! Very helpful, you will ALWAYS be aware of what will be on the test. He also about one or two times a week will says something ridiculous in a funny way, and everyone will chuckle. Just one of those jokes that you wouldn't say yourself, but that still made you laugh. Take Osterby!
I loved this professor! He is very helpful and his worksheets and practice exams give insight as to what will be on the exams. I recommend him if chem is not a strong subject for you.
Osterby is a great professor!! He keeps lectures interesting and really knows what he's talking about. His exams are pretty easy as long as you study. You get use an index card for every test plus the previous one which means 5 for the final. He is so helpful! Take him if you can.
Osterby is great! He makes it very clear what he will test you on, and you don't NEED to read the book, but the practice problems definitely help. He tells random stories and shows random, interesting reactions just for fun. Take him!
I thought Osterby was a great prof! He is a goofball and although he can be monotone at times, he knows how to keep the lectures interesting. Do all the practice problems and practice worksheets to make sure you grasp the material. He even gives you practice exams!!
He is such a nice guy and one of the easier chem prof. He gives you practice exams that are a little easier but like the actual test. Also he lets you use a notecard on the test. Chem is a lot of work but he is really helpful in discussion and if you go into his office hours. I would HIGHLY recommend him for Chem 103!!!
A manageable class, but make sure to get the easy points on lab quizzes, lecture quizzes and homework assignmets--they add up!Do all of the practicce problems and practice exams, they really help. The notecard on each exam is worthwhile-take advantage of it! A good prof, explains very clearly and does a lot of examples in class. Highly recommended!
Dr. Osterby is a nice guy. The class is pretty hard but any Chemistry class will be in college... It's really helpful that he lets you use notecards for exams. He gets boring sometimes but is really helpful and he does a lot of example problems that are very helpful on exams!
Dr. Osterby is okay. He doesn't really trick you on the tests/quizes, they are really straightforward. His lectures do get kinda boring sometimes (some people even fall asleep). He can also come across as a jerk if you ask him a question in person, but other than that he's pretty good.
TONS of examples, he goes over the homework before it's due..easiest points ever, tests are pretty much straightforward. I would strongly recommend him. 4 exams, 4 quizzes, 8 homework assignments. Does practice exams that are very helpful. GREAT PROFESSOR!
LOVE HIM! It's still a difficult class, but he's always available to help students. He goes over the homework in discussion before it's due so there are some easy points. TAKE HIM FOR LAB!! He grades the reports easily and I've only had one quiz and it's mid-semester. IF you're worried about chem 104, take him!!!
bruce is amazing. super fun in class and plenty of examples. if you do poorly in this class you are kind of stupid or just hate chemistry. It is a good time.
He uses a ton of examples in his notes. Uses last years tests as practice for exam, I found that they were very similar to the exams, therefore very helpful. He is always willing to help and basically gives answers to worksheets and lab questions in discussion.
Do the practice exams they will really help and are just like the regular exam, he doesn't try to trick you and it made me actually understand the material. his humor when it comes out is hilarious because he is so serious all the time even when he is cracking a joke, but it lightens the mood of the class.
Toughest class I've had at UW-L. Some exams seemed too easy and others were very difficult. Lab was fun if you enjoy chem. Indifferent judgement of Dr. Osterby but be ready for LOTS of practice problems if you're looking for an A in this class!
Dr. Osterby was a fine choice for a first chem class. He talks kind of quiet so I would either sit closer to the front or don't pick a 745 (I tended to fall asleep). His worksheets and practice sheets are super helpful and prepare you for what is on the test! I barely read my text book and am getting an A in the class now. GOOD CHOICE FOR A PROF!
Dr. Osterby definitely knows what hes doing. He gives tons of practice problems but what is most essential is the practice exam he provides before tests which are basically the same as the exam itself. I changed my major to chem because of him. textbook helps a lot! do all problems he offers and you will do fine!
Very experienced teacher. High expectations, but they are made clear. Goes at a modest pace and focuses on important concepts rather than emphasizing memorization of reagents, nomenclature, etc. Exams are quite challenging, but if you follow the study guide and do the recommended problems, you should expect a decent grade. Study the mechanisms!
I really liked Osterby. His exams were exactly like the notes in class and he lets you start exams a little early. I only opened the text book once. He curves grades in the end which is nice. Overall I enjoyed Osterby.
Dr.Osterby is a wonderful professor. He moves at a really good pace and provides plenty of examples for each concept. He provides lots of practice problems, including practice exams, and allows note cards on the test. TAKE HIM
Great professor. Provides extremely helpful practice exam, always makes sure you will know basically what is on the quizzes. Goes over lots of practice problems- had him for discussion as well and he answers any question you ask him (including lab problems and homework assignments!) and does them in front of the class. Highly recommended.
He wasn't that bad but he wasn't that great. His lectures are pretty boring and I honestly taught myself out of the book because he rambles a lot in lecture. He's really helpful though, you get notecards on exams and he is willing to answer questions.
Dr. Osterby was a very good professor. He goes over many examples during class and was always very helpful. His tests are reasonable if you actually study for them. I would recommend him.
Would highly recommend. I'm not the best at chemistry but Dr. Osterby makes it easy. Practice exams are exactly like the exam. No surprises in his class. If he doesn't cover it in class he won't test you on it. Go do discussion, practically gives you answers to worksheets he assigns which really helps with exams. Labs suck period!
Dr. Osterby's lecture and homeworks were fine, but his exams were really hard. All other sections used discussion for Q&A, but he gave way too many quizzes that killed my grade. Instead of getting an answer to what you don't know, you'll be quizzed on it! :( he is nice at office hour though.
Dr. Osterby is a great professor. He can be dry during lecture, but goes over the material thoroughly. He is more than willing to help with any questions you have, and will help you at whatever pace you need. Would definitely recommend!
Osterby is honestly really funny during lecture, I love his style of teaching it's honest and clear and I like that he is writing the whole time as we are copying his moves. This lecture style works the best for me and he is very precise with it. Awesome class, by far my favorite of the semester and I'm not a chem major.
Great professor, some sections he isn't very clear on but very willing to help you in discussion or office hours. Notecard allowed for every exam and 4 on the final. Quizzes occasionally in discussion, not very hard. Practice exams really help to prepare for the exams. Do the study guide!
At first it seems like his teaching style is unorthodox, but it's actually very practical and helps you to easily grasp the things that you need to know (unlike when professors spend lots of time on derivations and hardly any time on examples). His assignments are very challenging, but he'll help if you ask and they prepare you for the exams.
This class is obviously hard so don't expect it to be easy. Just do all of the assignments and practice worksheets. If you understand those the tests will be fine. He gives clear material, it's up to you to make the grade!
Dr. Osterby was a great prof. He goes though all the notes and gives lots of practice problems and worksheets for studying. He also allows notecards on all the test, with 5 on the final. Would take again!
Makes everything clear and straight-forward. If you show up to class and do all of the homework and readings it will be an easy A
Dr. Osterby is a great professor for chemistry. I only took him because of the good reviews that I have heard and he is one of the best. The exams can be tough but he gives out homework, practice worksheets, and study guides that really help. If you need to take chem 103 take Osterby.
Osterby started really easy but as the semester went on he rarely gave partial credit and wasn't overly helpful on learning concepts in office hours. You'll do fine on assignments and quizzes but the exam averages were usually around 70 or below. I attended almost all lectures but you'd be fine skipping as long as you're understanding the material.
Dr. Osterby was always available to answer question, though he was available it didn't mean he always answered them. Dr. Osterby is clearly smarter and more experienced than any of his students in Organic Chemistry and I feel it's tough for him to teach the subject because of this. Tests are fair, but not easy. Study hard and read the book.
I only had Dr. Osterby for lab, but I wouldn't recommend him. He is very longwinded and over explains things, sometimes making them more difficult. He also is very quiet, which makes sitting in the back of lab a big disadvantage.
