Bruce is a phenominal teacher! His lectures are very engaging and you can tell he loves coming to his job every day. His assignments are all very clear and don't take rocket science to complete. He always tries to help ahead of time, including telling you possible questions on the exams! I HIGHLY recommend him, easy A and amazing class!!!
Ravelli is a great prof, very interesting to listen to. He definitely loves what he teaches. Can be a little intimidating. Exams are difficult, but if you study you'll be fine.
Love this man.
Bruce is an awesome lecturer and really cares about what he's teaching. His lectures are engaging and notes are very helpful at explaining concepts. Exams can be difficult, but if you study with the MP3's you should be okay. Would highly recommend this class to anyone. I didn't really have an interest in sociology prior to the class, and now I do.
Bruce is a great teacher when I signed up for soci I was just taking it to fill my time table but as soon as the year started he was funny and a great prof right away. I am now in love with soci and I give full credit to bruce
Best prof I've ever had. Gives the most engaging lectures and gets his teeth into material. Couldn't of asked for a better person to teach intro sociology!
Bruce expects students to repeat his exact words from lectures when writing exams. If you copy him word for word, it'll be a very easy, but very boring A.
Bruce is an extremely helpful professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes the lectures memorable and the material easy to understand. He is very easy to approach and understanding, he wants to make sure everyone receives the grade they deserve. Would recommend.
Bruce is amazing. He is probably the best professor I have had at UVIC. He is very passionate about sociology and is crystal clear about what to expect assignments/tests.
The most wonderful prof I had this year, lectures are super entertaining.however, his tests and assignments are a bit challenging since they're all essays, and he want u to include A LOT in 300 words...
Everyone ought to take one class with Bruce Ravelli - brilliant lecturer, very knowledgeable, and very provocative. Take his words with a grain of salt, though - what he's really trying to teach us is that nothing is absolute and we must think for ourselves if we wish to have fulfilling lives.
AWESOME lecturer! You can tell he's very interested in the topics and very knowledgeable, loved his lectures. Tutorial assignments are a breeze, but it can depend on your TA as well. Midterms and exam were tough but that's because we write essays. HIGHLY recommend Bruce's class...one of my favourite 1st year courses by far!!!
Amazing teacher! Very engaging lectures, and he tells you everything you need to do in order to succeed. Not an easy A, but definitely a class that is worth taking. If you attend lectures and follow his instructions/guidelines, you will do well!
Absolutely fantastic professor. Engaging lectures and a brilliant story teller. Textbook is an easy read. I'd recommend attending his classes. The class is one that requires a regular amount of university effort; we're not in high school any more! Took Soci 100A/B with him and am now pursuing a sociology degree.
Amazing proff, lectures are extremely engaging and entertaining even though the material isn't super exciting. Best proff I have ever had, he cares so much about teaching and the quality of his class and it shows. Mid terms are difficult but if you pay attention in class you should do fine. He also records all lectures and puts them online.
This is the first time I've rated a class/professor and it's because Ravelli has truly inspired me in my first year. He is a brilliant speaker and even if you're not keen on reading textbooks, you will remember material if you attend his lectures! The midterms were definitely a challenge. The trick is to be sparing and careful with your words!
Great professor, does his best to engage everyone. However, he's not great at offering help in office hours and when he does it's often unclear and confusing. You will be engaged in this class but beware there's a lot of content that may be self taught.
Bruce makes the class very interesting. I have started to really like sociology because of this class and I'm even thinking about taking this as my major now.
I went in understanding that his midterms suck. They do, good luck. However, my issue his class is that he used only examples and stories in lecture, and his textbook is at best vague. Instead of teaching concepts he drones with examples. I would take an extra 15 minutes on anything he had to cover as actual lecture rather than another story.
He's an ok guy, and tries to make the lecture organized. Exams are all essays and he tells you the essay questions a week before it. Before the exam, I answered all of the questions and showed them to my TA, he says my answer was good and had no suggestions. I just repeated what I showed him on the exam and he only marks me c- . Avoid this class!!
Bruce was okay, not great but not bad. Course webpage is an absolute nightmare, no sense of order. Tests pretty good you get the questions a week in advance. Stories were kind of interesting but sometimes a bore. Only other criticism is he makes some criticisms of biology that are factually incorrect.
Had him for SOC 100A. Amazing lectures, super engaging, feels more like watching a Ted Talk or something rather than a class. I actually looked forward to going! He is up front with his high expectations, and strict grading on the tests, but it's do-able to get an A if you attend lecture and really engage with the material. Great storyteller!
Bruce is an amazing prof! His lectures are interesting, you actually enjoy going to his class. He explains things in good detail and tells you what you need to know for the exams. Very inspirational and would highly recommend taking his classes!
Good guy, really good teacher- he's very detailed, clear and specific, he records his lectures and posts them online with all the notes. He's also really clear about what he expects on tests. If you put in some effort Soc 100ab are great classes and you can easily get a good grade.
Amazing lecturer, definitely one of the best at the University of Victoria. Lectures are engaging and interesting, and his sense of humour helps. The exams are brutal, however. All exams are in essay format, and because he gives you the possible questions a week before the exam, he expects you to have near-perfect answers. Was a difficult A to earn
WE LOVE BRUCE! So helpful in lectures, super clear about the information and always makes sure everyone understands before moving onto a new concept and also very organized. Exams aren't easy but if you study hard enough you do well. Loved his lectures, he records them and puts them online, yet everyone still attends because he's amazing!!
Bruce was one of my favourite profs, his lectures always kept me interested and awake. He is clear about what he wants and what will make you achieve an A+. The tests were pretty easy, you get the questions 2 weeks in advance, lots of time to prep for. The online quizzes you can get 100% on and get an easy 15%. The course was super interesting!
The most ann0ying, uninteresting, s3xist professor. I walked out of one of his classes because of the perpetuation of s3xist stereotypes. You can learn the material as soon as he posts the questions for the exam. Add one or two tidbits of relevant info you learned outside of class to get an A. Only prof to teach mandatory SOCI classes :(
Before you take a class with Bruce, ask yourself this: Do you want to learn something new or do you want a GPA-booster elective? If you chose reason # 2, this is not the class for you. Bruce's passion for the material shines like a diamond in a coal mine. You will not leave this class emptyhanded. Prepare to see the world anew.
Good times
Lectures are interesting and he tries to keep it that way with jokes and stories. He sometimes makes jokes that are intended to make you mad, but are made in a satirical way and sometimes to keep the conversation going. He makes it clear what he's looking for, but you'll have to work for an A. I highly recommend taking his classes.
Just a pretty good professor all around. Does say some controversial things but its all to make you think about the materials. Prepare to work your butt off for exams.
Every time I walk out of Bruce's lectures I am in some way deeply affected by what he says. His passion and knowledge is inspiring. I took 100B as an elective...I dropped one of my Science Major requirements to be in his 100A class this semester. He is THE best professor I have had, he has made me excited about something that really matters! 1010
I think the main reason why people don't like his class is because they lack the ability to understand the material. He know the information so well he can transcend that to language anyone would understand. As for the assignments they are straight forward; know how to site and be concise. His midterms are not "easy" but they are achieveable. He is trying to create studetns that can think for themselves and that it was sociology is about. Don't take it if you think you are better than the material. However, if you are open-minded, anyone can learn from his lectures.
Bruce is an amazing prof. I attend every class and leave mind-blown. This course is really eye opening to real world problems and will always leave you feeling like you have learnt something new. Very interesting lectures and inspiring. Tapes all lectures which is very useful. Midterms may be intimidating but you are given enough time to prepare.
inspiring leactures
Ravelli's class is great in terms of lectures and class discussion. The finalsmidterms however are quite difficult.
I would not recommend this professor. He is unhelpful and not approachable. Overall, this class was not inclusive.
Bruce was by far one of my favourite professors. He adds humour to all of his classes which makes the lectures easy to pay attention to. Take everything he says with a grain of salt; he doesn't mean to insult or offend anyone. He gives you exam questions 1-2 weeks before the exam so you can prep for them and then chooses what questions he wants.
Bruce is an incredible lecturer. His lessons are thought provoking and the content (particularly of 100B) is relatable and eye-opening. The tutorial sessions are generally fun (but make sure you click with your TA as they grade everything). Exam standards are tough, but worth the knowledge from the rest of the class.
Great Prof I have ever seen. Do some work and you will know this world much more better. Again, in terms of the teaching quality, bruce is one of the most.
Good, solid first year course geared to first year students. A good intro to sociology, although it stays in that 'intro realm' which is amazing when students first encounter it, but simplistic if you've already had some exposure. Do all your readings and focus on good writing, and you will do well. Don't need to attend class though (theyre taped).
Hands down the best prof I have ever had in my 3 years of uni.
Bruce is the greatest hypocrite professor I have met so far, acts to be nice, but he's not. Sometimes leaves us something to study by ourselves, not very helpful in office hours and unrealistic expectations for first year students. Seriously, only God know what he is thinking about. If you care about your GPA and study confidence, avoid this class!
None of his class notes are ordered/ dated & contain only basic definitions. So if you need to refer to info 4 exam prep you have to search through audio recordings of lecture. Subjects assignments to the grading whims of 1st yr students via peer review. Exams marked via high standards. If all you care about is prof charisma than go for it.
Ravelli is an eye opening professor who loves to hear the opinions of his students and is great at listening to controversial opinions. Grading is tough but he clearly lays out expectations. He gives test questions 2 weeks in advance and will help clarify and give criticism on draft answers. Because of this his expectations are high, but acheivable
Reason why I love first year of university it is tough but so worth it! His lectures make you not want to miss class!
Bruce is an amazing professor! I never get bored in his lectures and all the topics we cover in class are very interesting. He is very clear and easy to understand, he goes slowly making it easy to take notes, and gives terrific examples of new concepts. I highly recommend taking his sociology class!
Overall, he is an amazing professor! He is so passionate about sociology and he makes the concepts so relevant to us. Even if you don't want to major in sociology, TAKE THIS CLASS. He goes nice and slowly to make sure you can take good notes. He explains all concepts well. However, it is not a super easy class - you gotta work for an A!
Inspired me to become a sociology major!! Has extremely interesting lectures and refuses to censor his content because it's important that people are exposed to the issues he's discussing! Midterm and essay grading can be a little iffy as it's done by TAs, but if you ask your TA specifically what they're looking for you'll have no problem!!
He is just the BEST professor you'll ever have in University.. you dont even have to be a sociology or psychology student to find his class just amazingly interesting, Im in science and his class is just what I look forward to every week. TERRIFIC EXAMPLES, TERRIFIC CLASS, TERRIFIC PROF
OMG!! Would 100% recommend this class. There is a lot of notes and the exams are essays (more like paragraphs), but its amazing! Bruce gives amazing lectures, always something interesting. I look forward to this class! Also, for the exam he gives you 4 essay topics and chooses 2 of those 4 really preparing you to do well on the exam!
Exams are easy to get a B to B+ on and his lectures are the greatest! He's also the only prof I know who MP3 records his lectures and posts the slideshow notes so if you miss a class you can make up for it easily.
Bruce is the reason I majored in Soci! Take his class even if you aren't interested in majoring in sociology, his classes are exciting and he is a great lecturer. His tests are tough.
Great Prof, wish he taught more than first year courses
He's the reason why I didn't drop out of university. This man gives you hope.
I didn't skip a single one of Bruce's lectures. He is an amazing teacher, so inspiring. Exams are fairly easy if you prepare. Honestly couldn't recommend this class more.. it's life changing. I barely opened the textbook and they're on reserve at the library if you find you do need it.
Bruce is an AMAZING lecturer. He has so much passion for sociology and loves talking about it. Tests are tough to get a good grade, they are all essay. TA's Mark hard but if you put in a substantial amount of work a good grade should be achieved. Because of 100A and B with Bruce I am going to major in Sociology, take this class with Bruce!!
Bruce is amazing. Didn't expect to like this class but thought it'd be good to have. Didn't miss one lecture, not because i had to go but because I didn't wanna miss anything. He is funny and engaging, definitively my favourite teacher this semester.
Ok, I found Bruce to be far and away the most self-involved, arrogant prof I've had during my BA. I took soc to learn classic theories not Bruce Ravellis 'threshold' theory or what ever he called it. Like give me a break, I don't care about some silly, obscure, sociological theory, yet he tested us on his own work in a first year course!
Amazing lecturer, really cares about the material, and is always willing to help.
His introductory Sociology courses (100A and 100B) inspired me to change my program to Sociology. He is very passionate about Sociology and about teaching, and I don't remember a single dull lecture. He explains complex ideas in a fun and engaging way, often through creative stories, videos etc. He is very fair, and even posts mp3s of his lectures.
Super inspirational prof, LOVED Soci 100A. Don't need to go to class because absolutely all material is online. Gives exam questions 2 weeks in advance and assigns a tutorial specifically to going over the exam questions. Tough to get an A, but almost effortless to get a B.
Best Prof I have ever had!!! Wish he taught higher level courses. So inspiring and an incredible lecturer. Bruce increased my interest in Sociology by 10000000.
Beside the fact that he is a funny and inspirational prof, I don't feel like he respects/ care about the suggestions from international students . He likes the smart students and always be there to help them but not so much for those that's are less intelligent.
Ravelli has amazing lectures and i like the way he set up the grading criteria. I was sitting next to him in mystic market, sooo exciting 3 i felt like a fan girl lol
Bruce an amazing prof who is both intelligent and thought provoking. He introduced us to sociological concepts, while also demonstrating their presence in our daily lives. Definitely recommend to anyone interested in society and learning more about why we do the things we do. Gives exam questions ahead of time so the TAs expect quality answers.
Still the best prof. I have ever had at UVic. Very clear, passionate and inspirational lectures. He is very fair, and posts all of his lectures online as MP3s if you don't attend his classes. Go to his office hours and say hello! He's a nice guy and really helpful if you need any clarification. Doing an Honours in Sociology now, Bruce is the reason
Bruce makes coming to class such a great time, he's hilarious!
Really answered some of the questions I've wondered about my whole life, and inspired me to continue taking sociology. He threatens you about tests and makes you feel bad for not being brilliant and inspirational every time you write a test. Despite that, his class is worth it, and he is very entertaining.
As a not first year student, its hard to get past Ravelli's ego to actually learn anything. His tests are plainly ridiculous, and as someone who has taken other Soci classes, he does a poor job explaining things that require more then a brief summary (Marx). That being said, he serves his purpose well for first years. 1/10 Mind not blown.
Bruce is by far my favourite professor I've had this year! Definitely a hard grader but the lectures are so interesting, he has the greatest stories that he uses to teach the material.
Very good prof, he makes intro soci interesting!
There is a lot of content to know, and you are expected to add your own insight into the mix as well. No hmwk other than the 2 midterms and final. Bruce will vaguely answer your questions in class, but attend office hours if you really want answers, and you'll have to dig for them. He wants you to think for yourself, not regurgitate his lecture
Definitely not an easy course but BY FAR THE BEST PROF EVER. He makes everything so incredibly clear and is an amazing story teller! Really great lectures and totally changes your perspective on the world
Ravelli is extremely knowledgeable within his academic field & has an obvious passion for sociology. His lectures were nothing short of enthralling-- he always discussed interesting/relevant concepts/ideas, and encouraged in-class discussions which did much to facilitate students' engagement in their own learning & appreciation for course content
Bruce is an okay Prof, but he has trouble seperating his opinion from the actual facts, but if you work hard in the class you should do just fine.
He is the reason I chose sociology as my major. He challenges his students and makes them think. Tests are very difficult but if you study and ask for help you'll be fine. Only wonderful things to say about him, he completely opened my mind and I am forever thankful!
Amazing lectures, VERY hard marker!!!
Amazing professor! Truly inspirational guy who will open your mind up to issues you had no idea existed. He leaves you wanting longer lectures with his intriguing stories and content. The class is not easy if you do not have a grasp on sociology itself, but definitely worth taking regardless.
Excellent professor! Bruce gives the best lectures, class just flies by. For exams, Bruce posts a selection of questions and then chooses a couple to ask, so the only people who do poorly in this class are those that don't prepare! Even though Bruce likes to talk about himself, I would still recommend this course! Don't buy the textbook.
AMAZING CLASS. It's earlyish but so worth it. He posts recordings of lectures online but go to class because it is way better and easier to learn. Two tests and a final all in the same format. If you organize all your info and study well you will be fine (unless your TA is harsh, you can switch). Also a project but just follow the outline.
There is nothing about Ravelli to say that hasn't already been said. He is an amazing lecturer and really made me passionate about theory. However the midterms and final exam in Soci 100A/B are tough, he tells you this, but they still remain some of the hardest exams I have done at university. However, I would recommend this class to anyone.
Bruce is the best. His lectures are always interesting and worth going to. Would defintley recommend taking a class with him!
I've got a bone to pick with Bruce. As a sociologist, he is no doubt at odds with evolutionary psychology. The issue I have is with him representing the discipline using ONLY a 20+yr old Time Magazine article and requiring you to use it to critique EP on the midterm. Great lecturer, but this is just lazy and intellectually dishonest. Can't recommend
Bruce is by far the best prof I've had first year. He makes you want to go to class. His lectures are AMAZING. His mid terms and final are intimidating but he tells you exactly what he wants and exactly what you need to get a good mark. 110% would recommend this class to ANYONE.
It is only 10/31/16 so I am in the middle of my class, however I have never heard a better lecturer/story teller. My only concern is how he marks, he was expecting a low class average and was not surprised when it was 63% on the first exam. Why he would setup his class for failure I do not know, however, very helpful and go to lectures all the time
Bruce is intense. His lectures are thought-provoking, and he definitely performs when he lectures. It's engaging. Unfortunately, it also makes me feel like he's shoving information down my throat. He says think critically and question everything, but when you answer in class, he often shuts you down with as little as the word "wrong". Harsh.
Bruce is hilarious and is an amazing lecturer. He is very knowledgable, so take advantage of any office hours available. Ask a lot of questions, he loves when students share their own personal stories during lectures as well. He records his lectures and posts slides online which is super helpful for studying
from the very first lecture I went to i was so inspired by this prof. You can tell he loves teaching and tries his best to keep you engaged. Super funny guy and his stories will make you laugh a lot. I only took this class as an elective and I loved it! Super easy.
What is there to say that hasn't already been said about Bruce?? He's an amazing lecturer; he really wants to make sure the students know the concepts and theories. He puts an interesting spin on sociology, and has definitely solidified my choice to major in it. Don't take it if you're not willing to do work (2 papers, 2 midterms, 1 final)
I was told he was an amazing teacher, passionate and such, but what I got was a preachy lecturer who often backed up his points with stories that ranged from amusing to manipulation of the course material. And he will basically tell you that you are wrong anytime you speak up. I know this from experience.
Bruce is a phenomenal prof. His lectures have to be the best I have had at UVic. My only problem with him is his marking is way to tough for a 100 level course. I took this class as an elective and I got grades in the 60s on his exams and had grades up to 96% in SOCI100A with another prof. He marks harder than many 300/400 level profs.
The lectures are amazing but the tutorial assignment and exams are super hard! The grading is really tough and they expect you to go beyond things learned in the lecture.
Amazing, funny lectures. Knows what he is talking about, as he wrote the textbook. The TA's do the marking, but the marking is very tough. Thought this would be an easy course, but it has a heavy workload. Bruce himself is an amazing guy, assignments weigh very heavy but you get lots of notice in advance. Notes are posted online, but class is fun.
Bruce is an amazing lecturer and can definitely engage a class. However, he has a firm stance on a lot of controversial topics so learning from him can be hard if your opinion differs. His grading scheme is ridiculous for a first year intro class and he makes it very difficult to get above 80. Don't buy the textbook, just share with someone.
Dr Ravelli has given some of the best lectures I have been apart of. He is thought provoking, and very engaging however his grading is the only issue. For a Intro Soci course he does not make it easy to want to continue as some of the concepts he is very particular about. First exam had a 63 class average which he said is consistent in previous yea
Bruce is one of the best lecturers I have had in University! Provides very interesting and inspirational lectures. I took both 100A+B because of it! He is a hard marker, but is completely fair in the fact he gives you everything you need to succeed, so if you don't do well, chances are is because you didn't do the work. Would definitely recommend!
Ravelli was my favourite prof I have had so far. His lecture is funny and interesting. I like to sleep in past noon but I didn't have to drag myself out of bed my 10:30 lecture. Although his lecture will cause a few existensal crisis once in a while (every morning) it is completely worth it. Get ready to hear all of Brad and Britney's adventures.
Bruce is the reason I made it through my 1st semester of uni, and the reason I'm majoring in sociology. Such a cool person; an amazing storyteller and SO passionate about what he does. This class is definitely not easy; he sets you up well for the midterms but you have to work for it. Go to office hours to get help! He really cares about students:)
Bruce is amazing! His lectures inspire and are very thought-provoking. I started looking differently at some things in life. One of the best teachers in my life. I would definitely take his other courses; however, the assignments and tests are difficult and require a lot of studying. But you learn something new by doing so...
Bruce is one of the most incredible teachers I've ever had. A class I think everybody should have to take; I really feel as if he's changed my aspect on life. The lectures feel more like TED talks, they're so interesting. Most days I left class either super fired up or inspired, he really makes you think. Tests are hard but you can work for A's.
I assumed Soci was going to be a good GPA booster but I was so wrong. There's only 3 exams and 2 papers but his TAs are hard markers (and my TA was the opposite of Bruce). I would never take the class again but I still really liked Bruce and I think he is very funny/smart.
Bruce has fewer prejudice then myself and taught me that i can still improve as a person. I was thankful that he taught me to think about what the "self" really is. Yes i found his class hard, and i am a fourth year student. Its not a GPA boost but you will grow as a person. Some of the info in the text and lectures was wrong. Excellent lectures!!
Bruce is a very passionate speaker and a great lecturer. He also posts the lectures and notes online which is very helpful. I would recommend this class to anyone and I think everyone should have to take it to be able to reflect on the world we're living in. It's not an easy A but if you put in the work you can get at least a B.
Bruce is my favourite professor. He's passionate about what he teaches and he is always willing to help, you just have to ask for it. My first midterm i barely passed, asked for his guidance and got an A on my next midterm. Lots of work outside the class. This class has opened up my mind and made me see the world in a different perspective.
Bruce's lectures are definitely worth going to regardless of being available as mp3's on his website. To do well on the midterms and exam though, you will have to cater to what your TA wants to see rather than what Bruce himself is looking for.
Can't say enough good things about Bruce. Lectures fly by and are thoroughly entertaining. He is very thorough with his explanations and clearly passionate about teaching. The midterms are very, very hard but you can work for an A. I bombed the first one but then learned what I did wrong and ended up with an A+ on the final. Amazing prof, love him.
I think every first year student should take his class.
The midterms and exam were all well prepared and discussed in class and tutorial, 2 midterms, 2 assignments plus the final. Gives good advice during office hours and has the best TA's
Bruce is fantastic! If you are ever struggling, his office hours are amazing as he can guide you through exactly what he wants on the midterms and final and how you can make abstract concepts relate to your own life experiences. So many extra resources, Bruce genuinely wants you to succeed. Tutorial assignments can be heavy and time-consuming.
Definitely the best lecturer I've had! While the grading is difficult don't let it discourage you from taking this course. Bruce genuinely wants you to succeed and that is evident by how accessible he makes himself to students. If there is any first year course that is a must, it's this one!
It's so hard but SO WORTH IT!! Bruce is the human embodiment of that "when the professor is passionate about teaching and you genuinely understand and enjoy the class" meme. I cried on the last day because I was so sad soci 100 was over, legit. The midterms and assignments are hard but you won't mind because Bruce is, as my friend says, a legend.
Bruce is a phenomenal professor. He keeps you intrigued, and I hated missing his class because it was actually pretty fun. HOWVER; he grades very harshly and you do have to pull your weight on the exams and papers because be expects a lot. I really wish he taught upper level sociology!
great professor the most interesting lectures I've had to date. The class consisted of two midterms two papers and a final, they where all marked hard but it is clear what he expects and definitely worth the take. A be is relatively easily achieved but be prepared to go out of your way to get an A.
Bruce was an absolutely amazing prof. His lectures were so inspiring, and you would leave that class with an entirely different view of the world. I never wanted to miss his classes because I truly enjoyed them. This class was very difficult though, and he does grade harshly. But if you put in the work it's very rewarding.
Bruce is seriously the most memorable, impactful professor I've had in my many years of studying so far. He's an inspirational, charismatic man that really knows how to sell his course. I would take the course again for fun! My advice for prepping for those tough midterms is listen to his exam outline (mp3) and supplement it with class stuff. Enjoy
AMAZING Prof! Very engaging and fun to listen to. Exams and papers can be a little on the tough side, but the expectations and outlines are clear and he is there, as well as the TA's to help you improve .
Great lecture, being too tough to first year students. Definitely won't take his course again.
Amazing professor! Transformed my small town mentality allowing me to see within the shades of gray. 100% would reccomend.
Bruce is absolutely incredible. He is passionate, interesting to listen to, hilarious, and very clear. I loved his classes and highly recommend Soci 100A and 100B to everyone because they transform your way of thinking and really open your eyes to society and it's problems that everyone overlooks. These classes make you well-rounded and educated.
Walking into Bruce's class, I am excited and thrilled to learn more about society. He makes it interesting and I leave the class with a different view of the world. He thoroughly explains the material and gives enough time to make notes on the slides presented and also makes the learning environment fun and unique.
Sick prof. Really makes you think and the concepts
Lectures are engaging, interesting and very well paced. I would 100% recommend taking a class with Ravelli.
Bruce is the most interesting and captivating professors (maybe even the coolest person) I have ever had! Every lecture made me think super hard and feel like I've learned a ton. He definitely knows his material and expects you to understand it as well in order to do well. I probably wouldn't take sociology with anyone else.
I absolutely love Bruce, he made me enjoy my first year at Uni. Went to 100A just to try out soci as a creative writing major, ended up taking 100B the next sem and now I've majored in soci instead. All the girls in my dorm were in love with him, Bruce is so funny and has a true passion for what he teaches. Defintely take 100A!!! Best part of UVic.
Bruce is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes sociology accessible to anyone and genuinely makes going to class enjoyable. Tests are tough, but he's very willing to help out and explain things to you. 10/10 would recommend!
Bruce is an absolutely amazing lecturer. Took this class as an elective, and it led me to consider switching programs. This course should really be mandatory for all students; it will absolutely change the way you think. The exams/assignments can be quite difficult, but if you have the time and are willing to put in a little effort, it's worth it!
Amazing professor, attendance doesn't count but I wanted to come because the lectures were so interesting. Your mark is based on 2 midtems (consist of 2 one page essays), 2 tutorial assignments (4-6 pages), and a final (3 one page essays). He gives you all the resources you need to succeed and makes his expectations very clear, so he grades harder.
Bruce is the best professor I have ever had. He knows his field inside out, and has a contagious passion toward it. The grading for exams is harder than most, because he gives the questions over a week in advance. The research papers aren't too hard, and have the potential to be very rewarding if you pick something interesting to you.
Bruce was a interesting and helpful professor, there were some issues with a TA and he fixed those in a timely matter. This course is easy to get a B+ in and an A is defiently achievable.
Bruce is one of those professors that was born to teach. His lectures are actually awesome. Like you pretty much have to attend because you need to refer to what he says in lectures on the tests, but you're not gonna want to skip anyway. Tests are graded hard but fair. Advice: write out ALL the essays and memorize them, and you'll 100% get an A.
enjoyed his lectures but it's your TA that really matters
To those newbies who will study in the class 100A and 100B concurrently, you have to think this option very carefully before choosing. As Bruce is not a direct marker for your exams and assignments, BUT TA. Especially the TAs have different tastes and thoughts in your assignments, which will confuse you a bit and maybe lead to unsatisfactory result
Hands down one of my favourite profs at uvic. I heavily recommend SOCI 100A and B. He does mark harder than most, but is very reasonable. He gives you everything you need to succeed and is really dedicated to SOC. I am so glad I took his class, his lectures just brighten up my day.
I really enjoyed his class! It's pretty much impossible to zone out as he makes everything interesting and always has the class laughing. The grading was a little bit tough but he gives the questions for the midterms and the final in advance so you know exactly what to study. Overall, an amazing prof!
This professor inspired me to go into Sociology, he really cares, and loves what he does. He is amazing and super engaging with his lectures and stories. Awesome guy. Take his courses.
Bruce was my favourite prof! He's engaging and so passionate about Soci, which you can tell. He was always willing to meet regarding questions and was very understanding. He makes you work for your grades, but you know you deserve the ones you receive. I would strongly recommend anyone to take his class if they have the option to! A true UVic gem.
Incredibly engaging teacher.
grade really depends on your TA. but Bruce is great to find for office hours and clarity. TA marking can be either tough or easy - so if you get a tough marker you will have to work harder. but super interesting material and although attendance isn't necessary, people showed up because he was a great lecturer!
A great man!!! Bruce's lectures are very intriguing and you will rarely be bored in his class. I found the written exams pretty difficult but he gives you the questions ahead of time so if you prepare for it, you will be fine! Bruce makes everything interesting with his stories and gives you a lot of insight, so I really recommend SOCI100A!!
Bruce isa very engaging and funny professor. He is always in front of the lecture hall on the stage, dressing up and taking the class through examples that he has talked about In lecture. He adds humour to lectures so it is easier and more enjoyable to follow. I would 10/10 recommend Bruces classes to anyone who asked.
Bruce has accessible learning style, but simplifies material to a point of being dull, incorrect, and offensive. He clumsily tries to be semi-inclusive, but the result is painful and alienating. He teaches theories as though they are facts, doesn't do his research, and then gives opaque marking criteria resulting in low grades. A waste of time.
His lectures are very good. He is a great story-teller and brings the material to life. Sometimes I think he could go deeper on content/less superficial on some of the topics, but he is very engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed attending his lectures. You will have to work at it to get a high grade, but it's totally possible if you want to!
Changed my life for the better.
This was an amazing class. It is hard to get a good grade in this class, but if it is something you are interested in it is definitely worth it. The gradings are done by TAs so a lot of the luck of you mark is dependent on your TA. I took 100A first and did a lot better than 100B all due to my TA in 100B even though I did a better job on my papers.
Great lecturer and you always learn something! The only thing is that he is a very tough marker but the criteria is clear. Always enjoyed the class.
Bruce was a great proof and did a good job teaching. he has essay for tests
Literally the best prof you could have. He is inspirational and cares for his students.
His lectures were like a performance. He is probably the best professor I have had. He gives clear grading criteria but he expects you to understand what he teaches on a high level.
Getting an A was possible but you I really had to look at his grading criteria. It was very specific and clear. I usually just wright what I think is going to be a good paper but in this case its better to make sure you hit every point that he says is important like providing examples. He was nice and the lectures were deff not boring.
Bruce's Lectures were just about always entertaining. I fully enjoyed them. I felt like I was watching a performance and actually learning something. He could adjust some of his lecture information on gender identity though. Other than that, this was truly an amazing class.
UVic is very lucky to have Bruce. A truly amazing educator!
Bruce is the best person I have ever met. Such an amazing prof and great guy all around. I was excited to go to his lectures every week and entertained for the whole time. This man deserves the world
I love Bruce! He is both an excellent teacher and a wonderful man who really cares about getting his students invested in sociology. He is a tough but fair marker who does not hand out As, but he does inspire you to truly work for his respect.
Ravelli was very welcoming and always showed up for his office hours. This really helped me understand the material on a deep level. His lectures were always interesting! I often found myself talking about them to people after class. All in all I would recommend Ravelli.
Very entertaining
THE BEST PROF EVER! if u need another elective, YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT WITH HIM. His lectures are more like presentation. He posts the slides and the audio for each class, so u don't have to go to class. But everyone shows up cuz he is just an amazing prof and we want to hear his lectures. Exams are fair, u write 2 paragraphs and TA marks the exams
Bruce is extremely considerate and approachable, he'll will always get back to you within a matter of a few hours via email. Definitely far from an easy class, you need to be able to add your own concepts to get an A. Overall would recommend Bruce to anyone!
he is by far the best prof I have ever had
Lectures are always so interesting. Bruce tells stories that make the content easy to understand and enjoyable to learn. Seeing him in office hours before tests is super helpful as he takes the time to go over anything you don't understand in depth. Amazing prof would 10/10 recommend!!!
He was really nice and accessible outside of class. He really made me think hard when coming into his office hours for some of the information but I think he just wanted me to have a deep understanding of the material. He was always on time and his lectures were very interesting.
Amazing professer, honestly one of my favourites! Lectures are important but well worth going to. Papers and test are graded tough, but if you really follow his instructions and criteria you should do fine
-awesome lectures, really engages you in the material -puts both his slides and a recording of the lecture on his website -uses an online textbook which includes quizzes and tests -your grade really depends on your TA (they do the marking) -gives detailed criteria for midterms and finals, so it is very clear what you need to do to get a high grade
Bruce is an amazing lecturer and really cares about teaching his students the importance of sociology. He will make you work for the grade but if you put in the work it is not that bad.
Bruce is a legend. Will make you think critically about current issues and encourages class discussions. Never had a prof with more clear grading criteria - follow the rubric and put in the work and there's no reason to not get in the A range; but lots of first years take this class for an easy elective with no homework - that is not the case.
Every positive review is true, Bruce is definitely one of the better professors out there. His lectures are great, he is more then willing to help you outside of class, he cares about student feedback and most importantly he really wants you to learn. Don't let his awesome lectures fool you though, the grading/exams are tough in my opinion.
Bruce is an absolute gem! He is so inspiring and when you leave his class you will legit think about his lecture all day! I would 10/10 highly recommend taking this class with Bruce!
My favorite prof in my first year. Amazing lectures!!
Bruce is hands down the best lecturer I've had at UVic. He is organized, technologically affluent, and really makes you think. That said, he is very committed to his ideas and it can be hard to begin a even-levelled discussion with him. The class is marked on tests where the questions are given ahead of time but marked hard. Take a class with him
lectures are amazing, only work you have to do is online tests through online textbook. really enjoyable and funny guy.
Love bruce but he has very high expectations for his students. His tough grades are well worth the interesting lectures though
Amazing lecturer, but tests were brutal. Expectations were very high often leading to disappointing grades, must work to get a good mark. Attendance was not mandatory although most show up to experience the lectures.
I loved how he made us think about the social problems that we don't usually notice. However, his expectation on students is very high so that it is hard to get an A in exams, even though we know the questions ahead of each test. if you're a sociology student and want to join CO-OP, you should take SOCI100 next year for good grades.
Lectures are fantastic and engaging. Exams are very difficult. You really need to critically think for this course in order to well on exams. Expectations are very high, but understandably so as Bruce makes everything very clear and tells you almost exactly what will be on the exams. I really enjoyed this class, despite much stress over it.
Bruce is hands down my favorite prof at Uvic and i think everyone should take a class with him . He pushes you to think critically about the worlds in ways that you might never have before . He records all his lectures and puts them online but still has a very high attendance rate as his lectures are engaging and fun .
Although Bruce is a great public speaker and story teller, he is a very political and biased influencer who is stuck in his own beliefs and unwilling to listen to other points of view. I wish I could like him more but I have very little respect for him.
Very immersive as a lecturer
I really love this professors cause he speaks very slow when he explain the ideas and events, and he will give us reminder when the test or essay due. And his review of test is clear and easy to read than the other classes I take.
funny man
Great prof. Really gripping lectures- forces you apply concepts to modern, relevant issues. Really helps with understanding. Overall, best course of my first year ! would 100% recommend taking Soc100A with Bruce.
Loved attending Bruce's class. He will make you work for your grade but appreciates your effort. His lectures were interesting and his stories helped you remember important theories. Labs weren't as interesting as lectures but that had to do with the TA not bruce
Bruce is the best! He makes the material interesting because he evidently cares about what hes teaching. The midterms are not an easy A, but hes clear about what he expects and if you put the work in theyre very do-able.
Ravelli is awesome! Hes hilarious, engaging, and his lectures are always interesting. Hes also super cool to talk to about social issues and recognizes his possible ignorances. His main goal is to help you see the shades of grey. The midterms were tough and stressful but every time I do them I get better at them. Looking forward to next term!
Bruce is a great lecturer and is incredibly organized. His material is easily accessible outside class. You are marked on two midterms and a final where questions are given in advance, but they are incredibly time-consuming to study for. Not my favourite method of assessment. I was burnt out, but if you put in the work, the effort is worth it.
Bruce is a nice guy, but his expectations/setup for an intro course are too high. Don't have to read the textbook to pass the weekly quizzes (skim/search), or to pass exams (just read up on the topic assigned in the question). Hardest exams I've ever studied for (2 weeks straight). Great lecturer, though content in 100A isn't very interesting.
Bruce is a real gem. He records all the lectures but most still show up because he is such a great storyteller. Definitely have to work hard to get a high grade. Workload is very start/stop based on studying for the midterms/final. Barely any work for weeks and then you spend forever preparing for the exams. His favourite phrase: CORRECT?
First time with Bruce. He is a good prof, you will want to go to his lectures because he is so engaged in his lectures. I would say he is a care marker, he gives you literally everything you could possibly need to get an A. He is by far the best story teller, he gets personal and I like that.
Bruce, himself is a wonderful person. LOVE his lectures, and his classes. Unfortunately, his grading is TERRIBLE. Absolute worst. Have never received such a low rating in all of my studies.
Good lecturer. Amazing lectures. You'll love the content and everything. BUT you WON'T love his tests. Try as hard as you like, but Bruce Ravelli WILL NOT tell you how to get better marks. He is a nice person overall, but in regards to your own accomplishments in this class, he does not care. You have been warned.
Completely failed to give his students adequate supports to do well during covid-19. Gave his TAs free reign to do whatever they wanted and left students guessing, left many with disappointing final exam grades even if they had done well the rest of the class.
I'm a third-year polisci student and I thought that I could take the 100b sociology class just for fun on the side. I was very wrong. This was the hardest class I had all semester. Bruce's lectures were great and engaging tho, and I loved showing up to all of them. Just incredibly unclear grading criteria
Okay so. Great guy, kind of intimidating. It is really hard to do well on his exams BUT you can write a paper (+ do other assignments) in place of tests and I would definitely say do that. It is not an easy A but the material is engaging so it isn't a pain to learn about.
I am currently going into my third year as a sociology major and took these classes with Bruce way back in my first year. During that time I found his testings difficult but now looking back on it I am thankful that be had us write these mini essays in our exams because it I feel like it has prepared me for future soci classes. Loved his lectures!!
Bruce made his classes extremely engaging and enjoyable and I wouldve actually just audited the class if I had the chance. If you like sociology, youll love him, but if you dont have an interest, I wouldnt recommend because he REALLY makes you work for even just a decent grade. Lots of memorization required
The man, the myth, and the legend: Brucie Ravioli. I AM IN LOVE WITH BRUCE!!! This man is a "communist by nature"(direct quote) and I am slowly turning into a commie. His lectures are absolutely incredible and he's so charismatic. I am in love (in a totally not weird way) and will be taking the second half of this course next semester.
One of my favourite profs so far at Uvic!
Bruce is an amazing lecturer, super engaging, and hilarious. Concepts can sometimes be a bit difficult to wrap your head around, but overall the class was awesome.
Bruce is an amazing prof. His lectures are very good, tells lots of stories to illustrate the material. He should do ted talks or smth. tutorials are meh but give you good points to go off of for tests. 2 midterm one final. Avg for each is 60ish bruce marks quite hard so you gotta grind. Not an easy A . A lot harder then I thought.
Bruce is the absolute homie. His lectures are amazing and engaging, the lectures are funny, and the concepts and learning is cool. His exams are hard, but getting an A isnt impossible. As long as you study and apply the concepts well youll be okay. Overall great prof.
Favourite class and prof so far! Incredible lecture delivery and they are recorded so attendance is flexible. The exams are difficult but not impossible. He really cares about teaching and it shows. Talk to your TA to get better grades. Regardless of grades, it's a really enjoyable class and prof, I would recommend it to everyone!
I took both 100A/B and had a great time! Midterms + exams are intimidating but it is totally possible to get good grades. Listen to the midterm/final MP3s - they provide super clear instructions! Just make sure to take notes from lectures, tutorials, and the textbook and you can really succeed in this class. Lectures and topics are super engaging.
Bruce is an amazing lecturer, and teaches the material well. That being said, his exams are the worst exams I've ever taken. There is no rhyme or reason to doing well on these. Do not take a class with Bruce if you care about the grade you get.
Love, love, LOVE Bruce. Was passionate every lecture. The exams are intense and may hurt your soul a little, bit I still remember the content from them now. His lectures and stories were often very funny, and made me want to continue in sociology. He acknowledged his privilege well, and was very open to criticism/help from students.
Bruce is an amazing, caring, and intelligent professor. He really enjoys what he does and will take the time to make sure you understand the concepts he is teaching. Exams are a little difficult for some, but going to office hours and tutorials really helps. Would 100% take this course again.
Thought Sociology seemed like a boring course but this Bruce made was very inspiration and made it hella interesting. Going into to business but taking it next year.
Bruce is a teacher you will remember. His lectures are amazing and well thought out. He seems equally invested in the class as we are. He wrote the 100 level textbook which makes the course so seamless and engaging. Hoping to take his class again in the future.
Bruce is an amazing professor. I'm at the end of the semester with his class and I wish it would go on for longer. He is a very knowledgeable and kind and I would gladly take his class again. I'm not personally in the sociology program but I took this course as an elective. I'm happy I did! if you have the opportunity to have him prof, take it.
Lectures are always very interesting. Tutorial mark (10% of grade) is purely based on attendance so free marks, and 20% comes from textbook quizzes which are easy if you read the chapters. in terms of midterms prepare for major hand cramps and a slap to the face- papers are written in a short time span and are graded harshly yet also fairly.
Getting a great grade in a Bruce class can be hard but his lectures are engaging and funny.
Bruce's lectures were super interesting and engaging but the exams are very difficult (i never got over a 60% on an exam in his class). Good prof though!
Bruce was an amazing teacher and his lectures were super interesting but the exams are so tough and are graded harshly plus they basically make up almost your whole grade. Overall greta class but hard exams!
best professor, extremely interesting to listen to, keeps you engaged in his material. provides good pre exam sources and clearly explains what is needed from you. tutorial/revel quizzes bump up your mark a lot. The only class that I have not skipped once this whole semester. Bruce cares about his students and is extremely respectful, I love him!
Bruce, very passionate about the subject matter and gives great lectures. Where this course falls short is the exams. They are specific and harshly marked. No matter how hard you try you'll get a mediocre grade in his exams even if you follow all the information and guidelines from tutorial. For this reason I will not take sociology again.
Bruce is a wonderful professor and a great introduction into sociology. His exams are tough, but he gives lots of supportive resources
I took this course purely for Bruce's rep, he is amazing! if you have even the slightest interest in sociology, I would recommend this as an elective or course to take because of how engaging and interesting the lectures are. My lowest grade but I'm not even mad because of how much I enjoyed and was able to take away from the class overall.
BRUCE IS THE BEST BEST PROF EVER!!!!! i am not lying when I say this man is singlehandedly the best prof at uvic. Every class is amazing with him!!!!!! I have recommended this courses to all my friends and EACH ONE of them come back to me in amazement! Bruce has changed everything for me; Bruce is simply the best! :)
Took this class as an elective, and after hearing about his exams I was very worried. However, Bruce ended up being my favourite prof at UVic so far, and I was upset when his class came to an end. Despite the low class averages for exams, I managed to get an A on every exam because I attended TA office hours and prepared for each exam thoroughly.
Super interesting and engaging lectures. The exams are incredibly difficult with strict and harsh grading, but if you prepare well enough you will be fine. His lectures make his classes worth it; I'm considering majoring in sociology because of how enjoyable his class was.
i love Bruce. Gives the best lectures and has the best stories. Tests are average and not hard if you attend class and tutorials and take decent notes, its not hard to do good if you care
Bruce is an absolutely amazing prof and gives passionate, inspirational lectures. Many people take his class because of his great reputation. Sci 100A and 100B have a very light work load, although exams take a lot of prep. He gives very clear info about what is expected on exams. If you are a good writer, you'll do well in his class.
I have never been so excited to go to lectures. He makes lectures engaging and genuinely enjoyable. Absolutely amazing prof.
I took this class as an elective and the best decision ever. The midterms and the final are pretty hard but not too worrisome. Even if you are not planning on taking any other sociology or humanity courses you should take this. It is eye-opening and really teaches you how to be a better person. Bruce is a great person, funny, and best stories.
Bruce's inspired me to become a sociologist. He's such a gifted teacher, I still remember his lectures from years ago!!! Weird to think about but going to his class changed the course of my life in a big way. Don't slack though! he has high expectations (but will try to help you reach them!). Go to office hours!!!! especially if you're confused
Best prof I've had at UVic. Took this as an elective for engineering, though slightly difficult exams and midterm, a highly rewarding class. Would definitely suggest.
Took 100A and 100B. The midterms and the final are hard. But Bruce is the most amazing prof I've ever had, I've never met a more engaging speaker. Extremely understanding of personal situations. If written exams are not your thing, you can ask to have oral exams at the beginning of the semester.
Bruce is an amazing professor. The tests seem heavy (and they are not light by any means) but if you study thoroughly for them and take advantage of office hours, they are pretty straightforward. The lectures are interesting and engaging and Bruce is always willing to help students when needed. Highly recommend his class.
Bruce was the most amazing professor. I've been graduated from UVic for 3 years now and I still regularly think of his lectures. He uses humor and real world examples to apply theories in a way students can understand. His tests are difficult but the content is always engaging and thought provoking. It was the best class I've ever taken.
Bruce treats lectures like inspirational speeches. He is very engaging and entertaining, but he is arrogant, stubborn, and DOES NOT CARE about you doing well in the class. His exams are brutal and he will tell you how to do well on them. Take Sociology 100 with Edwin. .
Funny guy with interesting lectures, however his grading system within the TAs is completely bs. My midterm was graded without use of the rubric and the variety between exam grades was insane. He takes pride in people not doing well on his midterms. Interesting course though if you are willing to deal with weird marking.
Bruce is a wonderful prof and he is willing to help is students. He is a very hard grader but at the beginning of the course he explains why. I wish I could take his beginners course again. He is a funny prof and is very inspiratinal.
Prof Ravelli is a wonderful human being. His lectures are story heavy, though the stories often don't help students understand the material. Midterms and final are difficult especially for a first year course. I wouldn't be put off by everyone's exam horror stories, yes they are difficult but you CAN get good grades on them.
Dr. Ravelli made his lectures interesting and engaging, although the I did not like the timed essay format for exams. He does gave clear instructions for his expectations; however, he always seems to have exceptionally high standards. I found the tutorials helpful for exam preparation, and attendance is important to fully understand the content.
Absolutely amazing teacher, definitely my favourite professor of my first year. He made every lecture fascinating and engaging. He's very funny, and knowledgable. Compared to my other classes where I just stare blankly at the wall writing down notes like a robot, bruce makes the whole several-hundred person class engaged at all times.
I love his rather ferocious "QUIET PLEASE" that he will sternly say if someone else is talking during his lecture, as it is incredibly annoying to have someone talking behind you whilst trying to learn. Just make sure for your midterms that you remember your TA's name, as Bruce grades way harder than the TA's. 9.9/10 would take again
Best professor at UVIC He literally changed my life !! Every person needs to take this course !!
An amazing professor. Just so incredible it's hard to put into words. I was so inspired everyday during his classes. Truly is one of a kind professor. Only thing is you gotta work hardddd to get good grades, be prepared. But I loved the challenge, it was hard at first but I got better! Take it SOCI 100A BRUCE ROCKS
Best professor I've had for sure. His expectations on midterms and finals are high but only because he makes it so incredibly easy to get at least a B. You definitely have to study hard for an A, but it is manageable. Bruce is extremely charming and passionate about his work. I will definitely be taking soci 100b next year.
Amazing professor, engaging storytelling in lectures that made me excited to come to class. Graded on three main in-class writes, although you are able to prepare ahead of time for the writes it is difficult to get a very high mark on the exams. However, I highly recommend Bruce, he clearly loves what he teaches and is a super nice guy.
my fav prof by far! very engaging lectures and he truly cares about your learning and wants you to succeed. Exams are very tough and doing well in the class takes a lot of work but the content is very interesting. exams are 1page essays in person and you have over a week with the questions to prepare. weekly chapter quizzes built into the textbook
Beware if you don't 100% agree with his opinions... ironically for a Sociology prof he isn't very open minded. Easy class though overall, just seems like a very fake guy
THE KING!! be sure to talk to your TAs before assignments because they will definitely grade you better if they are confident that you understand the material/are willing to take advantage of all of your resources. Beware that the TAs are advised to not make assumptions about your work and will not read between the lines.
Bruce's lectures are not only enlightening but also truly inspiring. He has a remarkable way of connecting with each student, making every class memorable. His passion and dedication make him a beloved and respected figure in our academic community. 10/10 would take again, the only comment could be him/Ta's can be tough graders but never unfair!
Bruce is by far my favourite prof I've had. His lectures were something I genuinely looked forward to. Once you figure out how to incorporate personal experiences/thoughts into the midterms/final it's easy to get an A. He and the TAs give us the exact criteria needed to get a B on any test, but the A is up to you and what you can teach them instead
Really great lecturer and prof, clearly passionate about what he does. Tests are super straightforward, if you attend lecture and do the readings you will almost certainly pass the course.
Professor Ravelli is an engaging lecturer who makes class exciting. Grading is tough but manageable with hard work. Using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me prepare effectively for the exams.
I had Bruce for Soci 100A/100B best prof ever. Its kinda difficult to get over 80% because he expects you to go above and beyond however doing the bare minimum will get you a B. Exams are easy to study for, he gives you the questions two weeks in advance. It's clear he loves what he teaches and cares for his students. I miss his class :(
Great lecturer and very knowledgeable. But lacked empathy and understanding, ironic because that's all he lectured on. He is intimidating to talk to and gives off judgey vibes. He also didn't provide me with my CAL accommodations that he was supposed to and couldn't care less. I had to beg him to give me my accommodations, he was so stubborn.
One of my fav profs!! Always very helpful and kind in office hours and his lectures were SO engaging. While his exams challenge you, he tells you exactly what he expects on them. I met with my TA to go over my first midterm and from her and Bruce's feedback, got 40/40 on the second midterm. Absolutely possible to do well if you put the effort in.
I really enjoy hearing Bruce talk and he's a very captivating speaker. I highly recommend this class if you have spare time in your schedule.
The best lectures and so nice to talk to!
Bruce is seriously amazing. His lectures never fail to keep me engaged and he really makes you think in a way you never did before. I would recommend him to anyone. He is very good at giving clear grading criteria and giving you everything you need to succeed. If a test is coming up, he tells you where to find any material you may need to succeed.
I have prepared for a long time for the test materials and still ended up failing both midterms. He wants us to write a page within 25 minutes during the midterm, which does not give us enough time to think. Not fair for people who write slowly. Tough grader. If you want to boost your GPA, this is not the course.
Honestly was one of the classes where I actually looked forward to going. The tests can be a little bit stressful but he gives you a lot of resources to make sure you do well. Would definitely recommend!!
Bruce was by far my favourite prof, I wish he taught every single one of my classes. every single lecture was engaging and interesting. yes the assessments were hard but Bruce provided the students with a lot of resources and time so everyone has the ability to do well.
Bruce is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is so passionate and makes lectures engaging. I looked forward to his class every week, and the midterms were incredibly fair. I can't always say this for a course, but I actually LEARNED a lot.
While I did enjoy the lectures as they were always very entertaining and easy to follow along, the exams were pretty difficult. After meeting with Bruce himself, and my TA about questions on the exam, I still didn't do great. It was frustrating as I did my best to do what they told me and write. If you are looking for a easy class, this isn't it.
