BORING! this class sucked hard.
Not the easiest of finals, but he explains all of his material very well and if you pay attention, especially towards the end of the semester it gets pretty interesting. I'd definitely recommend him.
Gives every opportunity to earn an A. Has had inept lab instructors, though. Cool hippy dude with a great sense of humor.
I have met only a few people who base thier lives on evolution as much as he does. If you are a Christian, be prepared to be offended. Make sure you tell him where you stand. You can catch him disprove himself if you listen close.
Awesome teacher. A hippy that likes to show slides. If you dont study or go to class, his test can be hard. More times than not, the previous semesters tests will be floating around. Keep an eye out. If taking biology, get him. He makes it fun.
Makes an effort to explain unifying points of biology. He tells you what will be on the tests, your fault if you screw it up.
He is really an interesting teacher. Do really good on 2 of the 3 exams and listen in class and you'll be set for a easy A. He gives good bonuses (you can get 3 points added to your final overall grade)!
He is the funniest teacher i've ever had.He gives really good bounus points. if you are thinking whether you take bys 119 or not, you should do that, you'll never regret to do that!!
Dr. Stallsmith must be one of the smartest people I have ever met. He definitely knows what he is talking about. He is also one of the most understanding and helpful professors I have ever had. I definitely recommend him.
no surprises in this class. if he talks about it in class. it's on the test. great teacher.
I loved him! He is super-helpful, knowledgeable, and funny! He even helped me with classes he didn't teach...he is a great professor. He does ramble a bit at times, but you always learn SOMETHING in his class!
Awesome Teacher!!!!!!!!!!!
This dude is great. keeps class interesting talks about the oddest things. Looks like a hippie but has lots of knowledge. Tests are decent and the bonus's are the oddest things (hint he talks about it in class not on any guides or books)if you are even remotley close he gives you the points!!
Very fair with tests. If he goes over it in class know it. If it's in the book and he hasn't covered it, don't bother. Does a study guide for each exam and will sometimes tell you what not to worry about. Keeps class amusing and doesn't get bogged down.
i can sum it up in one word... ATTITUDE
since i had to take this class to complete my GER's...he was the best teacher to have done it i guess. his lectures were understandable and even though I hated doing those dang labs, i did them anyways. overall, good teacher.

Excellent! I am a liberal arts major, and he made biology interesting even for me. He's a pretty easy grader, too. When I took his class, he actually let us drop our worst test grade (or just skip a test, if we were that confident!). Highly recommended.
Not the most interesting subject for me, but an alright class. He'll sometimes give you extra credit on the next test if you show up on nice school days (like sunny Fridays). The tests are multiple choice mostly, which is useful when you can't remember the exact scientific spelling of something, and the genetics test is easy enough to boost your grade a lot if you're doing poorly. Plus, he's really nice!
he's sooo cool....down to earth laid back....funny.....weird.....everything a bio prof should be

Great guy! Knows his stuff! Will help you in any way he can! Recommended!
Easy class! Lectures are especially boring though! He tends to ramble! However, he gives a study guide/practice exam for each test. Don't bother reading the textbook-most likely, if it isn't in the notes, it isn't on the test. Drops the lowest test grade out of 3 tests.
If you're taking biology, get Stallsmith. He manages to keep things interesting enough to even keep non biology majors awake. He gives extra credit on tests and for being at class on some days. Also, he lets you drop one of your three test grades, so even if you screw one up, you still have a chance to make a good grade.
Stallsmith is great. He likes to make funny jokes in the lecture and you can tell he enjoys teaching the class. His tests can be challenging but if you think about the questions, you can usually figure things out. I recommend him highly.
excellent instructor. takes time to explain material, and often incorporates humor into lectures. unfortunately has a tendency to spend too much time on any one area... Highly recommend Stallsmith.
I had him for both 119 and 120. I found 120 to be harder. His lectures are long and boring and he tends to spend too much time on one slide. However, he gives you a study guide for each test and a question on the final exam that can raise your grade. In addition, he always has a bonus question on each test. Not too bad, but not the easiest either.
if you have to take a science, biology with stallsmith is the way to go. he's funny in his lectures, and he doesn't take attendance, so if you really don't wanna go, it won't affect your grade. if you read the book and the notes, you should be fine, even if science isn't your strong suit.
Lectures - boring, tests - bland, labs - pointless. You'll learn what happened to that 3 Musketeer bar you ate for breakfast, but that's about it. If you just need any ol' science w/lab credit - I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Fix' AST 101.
great prof- easy to get along with- very helpful
A Fantastic Teacher! He's one of those guys that actually cares about his students. Clear lectures and the material is easy if you pay attention.
I loved this teacher. His lectures are So organized and clear, with the material all broken down for you, so your notes are exacty what you have to study. He gives study guides for tests- I wish every teacher dd that. And he lets you drop the lowest test score. He has a really funny sense of humor too. One of the Best Profs I've ever had.
He wasn't that easy. I don't care for biology and he didn't really make me interested. the tests didn't really correspond with the notes. and the notes were mainly pictures and not organized
Dr. Stallsmith is really nice, helpful, and has a great sense of humor (in a totally cheesy but oddly endearing way.) I still thought the class was boring, probably because it was huge and mostly Powerpoint, but I suspect that he would be superb in a smaller class with more interaction. The class is not hard if you take notes and study well.
Stallsmith is, overall, a pretty good professor. I don't really have any interest in Biology, and to be honest, after taking the class, I still don't have any interest in Biology. But, he gives study guides for all the tests, so his tests are not too hard. While you don't necessarily need to come to class, you do need to read the chapters in *detai
I am in his class now and Dr. Stalsmith is sexy!!!!!!!!!
Stallsmith is type of teacher where it is rather hard to listen to his lecture because he can be rather monotone. Also, you have to make sure that you read the chapters in great detail if you plan to do well on the test.
a funny guy but very monotone and borrrrrrring. the information is interesting, but he is not a very interactive teacher. the test are hard because he he does not stick to what the study guide follows. he explains that the study guide is pratically the test but it not even close helpful hints- follow NOTES & Books- i dont recommend him
This class was extremely hard. His studys were pretty much useless. None of the information pertained to the tests. To be able to pass this class with a high grade you have to read the chapters and be able to know and spit back the information in great detail. Pretty much take good notes, and read EACH page of each chapter..
Bruce Stallsmith is brilliant. Absolutely. I wish I could take all of my classes with his.
The study guides are useful only for the essay questions. He drops lowest test grade. Just outline the chapters and you'll do well--won't need to come to class. If you listen while in class, you'll hear one of his cute jokes. Know the pictures in book. He knows what he is talking about. I would take another class with him
Vertebrate Repro w/ Stallsmith is pretty fascinating. Along with his usual witticisms, he makes some pretty interesting comments/jokes on the material to keep you interested. Ask him a random question in class and he'll come right back with a random answer. Funny stuff. Great teacher. Very helpful outside class.
When Dr. Stallsmith really gets cookin' on the monotone, he can put death to sleep. He likes to throw curveballs on his tests, but overall they're not too overwhelming. You probably should read the assigned readings in detail, though, and study the important figures. There are extra credit opportunities and he drops your worst test score. Not bad.
I've had him for BY 119,120,317, and 318. AMAZING. I couldn't have asked for a more intelligent and interesting prof. He may be too intense if you're not interested in the field, though. You can learn more from Stallsmith in Vert Repro and Zoology than any prof at UAH. I've never had a prof come close. Plus, he's really fun.
His class was extremely hard!
This class is somewhat difficult. To do well in Stallsmith's class, you do not necessarily have to attend all the time, but you do have to read thoroughly and use the study guides. Also pay attention to the notes in class and the pictures in the book. Hard to stay awake through his monotone lectures sometimes.
worst teacher i've ever had.. and im a biology major.. hated his class.. don't even go to class, cuz none of the stuff in class is on the test.. jus read the book, and youll get good grades..
Dr. Stallsmith is a very intelligent person. He definitely knows his stuff. The information he lectures on in class will be on the test. I thought that the tests were easy if you went to class. If you don't want to go to class you will do fine on the tests if you read the book. I would recommend this professor
his lectures were enjoyable, but i thought the tests were hard. (i didn't go to pass though, which would have probably helped).
I'm judging the class, not Stallsmith b/c it was so heavily weighted on the lab, which he doesn't do. Vert Zo is pretty tough. The lab practicals seem unfair, but there's nothing u can do about it, and there's usually a scale (depending on lab TA). Fortunately, Stallsmith makes up for it by giving amazing partial credit on his lecture exams!
Graet prof, tests were reasonable
Stallsmith is oh so boring!!! He tries to make jokes which to me are not funny at all. His class is hard only if you don't pay attention and miss class. Even though my rating is low for him, I can say he was a good teacher, just boring.
Dr. Stallsmith's classes have been my absolute favorite classes period. His jokes are corny, he prepares you for tests, and he drops your lowest test grade. Yes, you have to read the book sometimes. Get over it, you're in college. Dr. Stallsmith is enthusiastic about biology, entertains questions, and is generally a really good professor.
Stallsmith is awesome. He is one of those big for nothing types. Ultra tall, football player turned hippie type. He doesn't really joke, he just says random stuff without segway. The book is dense but it complements his lectures. Go to class. If anyone that's had him is reading this: "Round up the Usual Suspects!"
BY FAR the best Proff I've had!! He incorporates his sense of humor, making what would be a sleep-inducing subject to many, into a fascinating subject!! Infinitely flexible, he unhesitatingly answers all questions. Didn't use the book once, but get the lab manual.
Unhelpful when approached outside of class. He's an AMAZING Biologist, but a bad teacher.
I had Dr. Stallsmith for senior seminar during the summer. Attendance was mandatory; a powerpoint presentation and a few minor writing assignments were required. Overall, this class was easy and enjoyable.
Very good teacher, very knowledgeable in many aspects of biology. Tests were all essay and difficult. Read all of the articles. He WILL call you out for being late or leaving early. Be prepared.
TAKE NOTES. If you go in and takes notes on his lectures (Do NOT just copy his powerpoints!) the class is a total breeze. He's kind of a bore to listen to, but if you can pay attention it's a very easy class. All of the test questions are right out of the notes.
Dr. Stallsmith's lectures were quite entertaining. He was very clear, knowledgable, and interesting. I like that he reviews at the beginning of class and gives excellent study guides. The tests weren't very hard; they had bonus built in (and he drops the lowest grade). No homework, just read the book and come to class.
Great professor. Material of class itself is very straight forward and not very hard at all. Most of test comes from his lectures. Be sure to take notes on his lectures, especially what he says that is not on the slides. He goes off on tangent stories, but most are interesting and the material WILL be on the exams. Drops lowest exam too.
3 hourly exams(50%), one 1-hour lab per week(25%), and comprehensive final(25%). Must make at least 60 in lab to pass the class. Used the textbook to review for exams. Posts review sheets for each exam several weeks in advance and goes over in class. Drops your lowest hourly exam grade. Gives bonus points for showing up to class when others don't.
3 hourly exams(50%), one 1-hour lab per week(25%), and comprehensive final(25%). Only used book to review for exams. No HW or quizzes. Posts review sheets for each exam and discusses them at the beginning of class. Drops lowest hourly exam grade. Gives bonus points for showing up to class when others don't (+2 on exam). He is an ichthyologist.
Stallsmith is a good biologist but not a good professor. Study guides don't match up to the tests. All you do is take notes, whether you go to class or not won't really make a difference.
I really liked this teacher, except the way he lectured in class. His slides consisted of pictures that he would explain instead of words. But overall pretty good class!
Test were pretty easy but he would slip in stuff that he never mentioned that was in the book but if you have friends in Judy Cooper 's class it is smooth sailing to a decent grade. His final is not pulled from his other tests like Cooper 's though so you do need to study for the final.
This only applies to his 300 level courses. Grading is centered around 3-4 short answer tests, "Tell me a story supported by facts". Fair grader, but don't fluff your answers. No textbook, but lab manuals are MANDATORY for 317. Goes into more detail than is on the slides, so you better show up. Dry sense of humor. Starts class on time, every time.
Be prepared to read all the assigned material multiple times. The tests are all short answer or essay related to the reading and lectures. Don't embellish your answers; keep it to what was discussed in class. The class wasn't an easy A, but you should be fine as long as you attend class and keep up with the material.
Stallsmith is a solid teacher. In the upper level classes, the tests are in essay format (doesn't matter how long) and you have to answer 4/5 of 7 q's w/ #1 required. I studied the day of by looking thru and memorizing his powerpoint lectures. If you study that, you'll get a good grade. He's fairly entertaining. Interesting class as well.
He lectures through all the material, but it's hard to keep up with what he's saying because he goes off on rabbit trails, and the way he lectures is boring. Doesn't have any homework, other than the reading. Tests aren't easy, compared to what students from other classes have said.
gave 3 tests and one final, never cancelled class. he drops the lowest test grade which is good but only lectures on textbook diagrams and gets off track very easily
Hard to follow his lectures so I relied mostly on the textbook- however it is not required. Posts slides online but you need to be at class if you aren't going to read the book. No clicker points.
Come to class, take notes on the lecture (not just the powerpoint) and you will do fine. Only gives 3 tests and a final, and drops the lowest of the first 3. No attendance policy, but gives bonus points for showing up to class the day before a break like Labor Day or fall break. He goes on tangents and can be a bit boring, but I learned a lot
He may be ok for lower level classes, but for his 300+, get ready to read. There is no textbook, so he gives you a bunch of research papers to read. Sometimes he's an easy grader, and other times he's super picky. He may be good for some people but he is not the teacher for everyone.
I do not recommend this professor. I did bad on the first test and then studied harder for the next test only to do worse on the second test and then even worse on the third. His tests are super hard and those are the only my grades you have for the class, just 2 tests because he drops the lowest one but that still didn't help me. DONT TAKE HIM
Stallsmith is a good professor. Many people say you don't have to come to class b/c he posts lecture slides online, but in order to really understand the main points, coming to class will earn u an easy A. His lectures were somewhat boring but as long as u have a basic understanding of bio and try to listen in class, the tests are easy (all M.C.)
Most people I asked about this professor highly advised against, but I found this class to be very easy. As long as you pay attention in class and read the chapters the tests are very easy. He also gives extra points on tests occasionally for showing up to class and posts the power points online!
Doesnt post grades on Canvas!!! After semester has ended there arent any grades posted! Frustrating!
If you go to class, put your phone up, and pay attention, Stallsmith actually does a pretty good job explaining things. Read the textbook a little before each class so he's easier to follow! Recitation is pretty pointless and lab is super easy. Attendance is only required in recitation but he sometimes gives out EC during lecture if you attend.
Professor Stallsmith was a wonderful first year professor! Taking Intro to Biology, or BYS119, I couldnt have asked for a better teacher. There are almost no grades in the class except tests. But just take notes, show up to class, and use your book when you can. Youll be fine, and youll like his stories too!
Very test dependent. Only 3 tests but he drops the lowest one. No homework but that means you have to do well on the tests. Posts lectures of him teaching but no other interaction between prof or classmates. Available extra credit up to 4.5 points on final exam. Watch the lectures because he does review questions which could be on the test.
Avoid this professor. All he does is ramble on lectures and you dont know what exactly youre supposed to know. Even if you did absorb the right information from his lectures, its not helpful on the tests AT ALL. He give three short answer tests the entire semester and grades them oddly and harshly. Theres also no homework to help study.
His class was so confusing. Not the material, but his teaching style as a whole. Some students he would grade lightly, others he would be super strict with. It just depends on when he grades your test. He didn't even grade out the final. I had no clue until the class was over if I would make an A or not. Not bad, but certainly not good.
No study material, no way to study for exams, no learning. Theres no buffer for grade only Exams, his study guides are not relevant to the exams, studying them will not help you. His lectures he goes off track not explaining material well. If you do not have an expert grasp of biology you will not understand. DO NOT TAKE!!
Professor Stallsmith is hilarious. He'll say the most random things at times to keep you interested in what he is teaching. Just watch the lectures, take notes, and you'll do well. Highly recommend.
Bruce Stallsmith is an amazing professor and I would 100% take his class again. He's a really great guy and a fair grader and replies pretty fast.
