Probably the coolest history teacher at UCSC. He's clear, effective, nice, funny, and, most importantly, rarely boring (quite a feat for a history professor).
Interesting teacher, but overall not that great. The TA's were ridiculous at times, and only a few of the readings were worth it, the others just seemed like fluff. majority of the class seemed to be in various states of the dream cycle.
Bruce Thompson is king of history, now and forevermore. Anyone who rated him less than 5 deserves a stern whooping and should perhaps be summarily executed. Seriously, Bruce Thompson was the main factor in my decision to become a history major.
Great teacher! Lectures can be somewhat bland, but overall, he's a good teacher!
I am a history major now because Bruce is so cool! He is hilarious. I believe that he could make anything interesting. You should definately take him!
Great teacher. His lectures are clear, concise, and interesting - a difficult feat for a History teacher. His classes convinced me to officially declare my European History major. Generally enjoyed the readings too.
Bruce is the best, no question! Two classes and one more on the way, he's one professor I can never get tired of listening to. If you're even slightly inclined on taking an intro history class, he's the greatest!
Bruce is hands down the best! Witty, personable, engaging...he has it all. i took his film and holocaust class, and adored him. i can't stress this enough: everyone must take a class with him.
Bruce Thompson is my favorite professor yet. He is excellent at making lecture fascinating and wants to see students succeed. He's funny and accessible. I learned a lot in his class and am considering taking a class at 8am just because he's teaching it
Easily one of the top5 History professors at UCSC. I'll be taking yet another class of his spring quarter. He is not boring, very knowledgeable and approachable.
Bruce is amazing. I took Film and the Holocause from him and I loved him so much and I was so exctied when I found out he was teaching a core class that I could take. He is very intelligent and a wonderful person. He is humorous and understanding.
Very well learned, well spoken. Lectures are enjoyable and he is very helpful. His classes aren't a breeze but if you do your work you'll earn your grade easily.
Bruce is the best! He is funny, really helpful and a great teacher!
Bruce was one of the best teachers that i have ever had. he made european history exciting and clear! we had at least one film clip a day, which made the 70 min. fly by. take a class from bruce, he is the best!
I wish he taught more classes, I'd take them all! Really makes things understandible and he has a sense of humor to boot.
Sexiest man in this department. Good method of blending lectures and videos. Great handshakes too. XOXO
Bruce is really funny, and really personable. One of my top three professors at UCSC. He knows a****load about film, and about history. A very nice man.
He is the sweetest, most adorably professor ever! Very funny and interesting...He's just so great!
Great teacher ! super sweet and puts things in a way that you understand and find interesting. The best professor I have had thus far
Great lectures! Bruce is very entertaining and adorable, lots of reading but well worth the time. History30c was a great class but made even better because Bruce was there, even though we read 10 books!!!!
Bruce is the kindest, most personable, hilarious, and interesting professor I've had at UCSC. He has an astonishing amount of film knowledge under his belt and makes insightful, brilliant comments in class. He is a lovely person!
intersting teacher. makes classes fairly entertaining
He was the kindness professor I have ever had at this university thus far. He is very clear and presents the material well. He clearly knows his stuff. Take this cours!
Bruce knows his stuff. Unreasonable amount of books for course, interesting films though. In class essays, and one term paper that will help your grade. Short answer on the final will kill you if you haven't read. Perhaps the best history professor.
Bruce is the reason I became a history major. He is the best prof at UCSC.
This guy is awesome and he teaches history very clearly and with much knowledge, the video clips he shows in every class really help bring the subject to life. Plus he's cool to talk to.
bruce is the man! He has the amazing command on his topic i've ever seen. In addition, he has a great sense of humor and a wonderful teaching style. Bruce is bruce!
Bruce was amazing! He was absolutely adorable, sweet, funny, interesting, and he really seemed passionate about his topic. Not very difficult if you do most or some of the reading. And some of the readings are pretty interesting. Definitely recommend him!
best...teacher...ever!
Bruce is such a nice guy. He's smart too! I think he's fair and he assembles a great reading list. I liked his class a lot, and I hope he teaches more in the future, just not at 8 AM!
Wow, what a great professor, he is so sweet and almost too fair and forgiving! Really! Such a smart, interesting, great great professor!
AWESOME TEACHER!! His lips is too funny, but the man really kept my interest and is a very friendly to students when you have questions. A++++++++++
I'm taking my senior seminar with him and he's awesome! He's so helpful and more than willing to work with students if they're having any difficulties. This is my 4th class with him and I still find his teaching style extremely helpful. I recommend his classes to anyone.
I took 30c, film hist, and espionage seminar with Bruce. He was also my department advisor. He is one of the most amazing teachers I have ever had and the best History teacher at UCSC. He wrote recommendations and helped me get into grad school. UCSC would't have been the same experience without him
Bruce is one of the best teachers I have ever had, and I am not even a history major. He is passionate about his work and is extremely smart. His lectures are interesting and his tests and papers are fair. If you need to take a history class to get rid of a GE take one of his.
Bruce was sweet. He manages to lecutre an entire class with out notes, and keeps it interesting. Very highly recommended
Not exactly a history class but still interesting and engaging. No boring, long lectures (not a professor who needs to hear himself talk to feel good about himself.) Lots of good student discussion, great videos and good, clear paper assignments. Bruce is helpful and sweet, one of the best at UCSC.
Bruce is adorable! He is a fabulous teacher, and understands that students don't only learn through teachers talking, but videos and text as well. Great class!!!
What an amazing person and teacher. He's a complete sweetheart and his passion for what he is teaching definitely makes you excited about the material also. Bruce is very, very helpful and his little jokes are great. If you love film clips (really good ones at that), take this class! Oh, and like reading too. Haha.
Students who think they are getting an education in Bruce's classes are mistaken. Any instructor who allows interpretive dance in lieu of a final is suspect. With standards like these, it's no wonder that serious academics see ucsc as a joke and a ucsc diploma as irrelevant.
Bruce Thompson is incredible as a teacher. The readings are intense (what can you expcet, it's a History class!) but they are amazingly engaging. Bruce is so enthusiastic about what he is teaching (and such an adorable person to talk to)that it is absolutely contagious. Take this class, for History majors and non-majors since you won't regret it!
Bruce is one of the best teachers at UCSC. in class, he plays film clips so the class stays interesting throughout. He's a great guy, but his TA Anders was the biggest waste to TA, if you get him, run like hell.
Bruce is awesome, I loved the class. He had really interesting stories, and keep the whole class engaged.I was excited to go to class. The tests werent bad, especially because he would give you options for what would be on them. The only problem was my ta :Anders Otternes- another reviewer had the right idea- RUN AWAY. Sections were TERRIBLE.
he is an amazing professor who cares about his students and the content that he teaches. Students are not his pay check and he loves to teach.
hes the man
You can tell Thompson loves his subject and teaching. 4 years after I graduated, he still has time to answer questions and suggest reading for me. He also was nice enough to recommend me for EAP.
Great guy, interesting class, but his lectures and soft voice will lull u to sleep. Sorry Bruce!

Best George Bush Impression EVER!
he is one of the best teachers I've had at ucsc. He took his class very seriously, but was so helpful, and his lectures were so interesting, i actually woke up every day at 8 am to attend! i wish i was a history major just so i could have bruce as a teacher again.
I love Bruce! It was because of his class that I became a history major. He is so passionate about his subject it was contageous. Cograts on your teaching award Bruce!
Taking film and holocaust with Bruce was great- He's a fun guy and his lectures were really informative. The movies he chose for the class were sometimes boring, but always relevant. His final is incredibly fair, and he is always around to help his students.
BEST prof I've had at UCSC thus far. He's very charismatic and intelligent, which shows in his lectures. I always looked forward to class, as he made the material very clear, interesting, and often entertaining.
I took Modern Jewish Intellectual History with him, and he is my advisor. One of the best and most interesting History Professors at UCSC. A lot of reading assigned, but he didn't seem to expect everyone to do everything, and all the works were really worth reading. Take anything you can with him, he will make it worthwhile and a great class.
My favorite teacher so far. I looked forward to this class everyday!
HILARIOUS. take his classes. just do it.
Couldn't have asked for more. The best there is, take his classes!
Awesome teacher. Friendly, funny, an all around good guy. Highly recommend taking any of his classes
super interesting class, shows lots of fun movies, hilarious guy. very approachable. take all his clases!
awesome, and really cute. The class is really interesting and the books we read (though alot) are wonderful. He sends you the lecutre notes, and we watch movies every lecture. Very Interesting material.
Amazing, interesting, not very difficult. The best teacher i've had so far.
Bruce Thomson is a fabulous little man. I never thought modern European history could be interesting, but I actually wanted to go to class even though roll was not taken. Instead of text books we read quite a few novels, but most of them were quite good. Anyway, my point is, I would and probably will take another class from Bruce.
bruce is an easy teacher even though he usually assigns a ton of books. he doesn't expect all of it to be read but the selections are pretty good. with that said you'll still want to do your reading/work since the TA's do the grading and not bruce unfortunately =(
Bruce rocks, we are lucky to have him at UCSC. I have taken 4 classes by him. He expects good writing and will give advice in order to help the process. His lectures help you to remember the material. 3 papers and a final written exam.
Bruce is a pleasure to learn from, he is jovial every day, and will take any question seriously into the conversation. Gets a little off track sometimes, but it is just more information to be learned. Two tests, easy, and one paper, easy.
Bruce is an amazing teacher. His personality drives you not only to care about this class but to invest yourself into learning the material. The class pays a lot of attention to the art and social issues of history (my favorites). Highly recommended.
A fantastic professor and a fantastic human being. You'd be a fool not to take his class.
I LOVE HIM!!!!!! He is the best teacher, so funny, so adorable, and sooo nice. Very very intelligent, and his class and reading selections reflect that. I hope he never leaves UCSC!
Interesting, understanding, and very helpful. Bruce is one of the best professors I have had here at UCSC. If you have the chance, take any of his courses.
nice and fun
Bruce is the best! Not only is he adorable, but he is an amazing teacher. He is so fun to listen to. I looked forward to all lectures. He has long office hours and is such a pleasure to talk to. He tells the cutest jokes and the film clips are great. I love Bruce!
I love Bruce Thompson. He is an amazing teacher and loves/knows a lot about what he is teaching. He is hilarious and defintiely warmed up to us all about halfway through, at which point I loved going to class just to hear him speak and tell jokes. Awesome man, interesting class. The TA I had for this class sucked, but clearly that's irrelevant.
His lectures are so clear that you don't even need to really read his books to write an A+ paper. Just take good notes in lecture because he'll go over quotes and what not to write a good paper. Going to every class also helps. He's not a boring teacher at all, shows good film clips during every class and has a great sense of humor! =]
i dont see how anyone couldn't like Bruce. He knows his stuff. lectures were, I thought, a bit unorganized, but thats the nature of the class (Israel/Palestine). I learned just about all i could expect on the topic. I would take him again in a heartbeat
Basically bruce is the sickest guy in the history of ever. take any and every class this man offers
A wonderful man and teacher. Just take him if you can !
Bruce is a great professor, but there was a lot of material to cover and a lot of reading assigned for only a 10 week course. The midterm was based mostly only lectures and the final was based mostly on readings, but overall this was a good class (although the subject was a little boring at times) and bruce is a great professor!
Best teacher i have ever had. He knew exactly what he was talking about. He lectures with out note and is AWESOME. He also posts most of his lectures online which is so helpful.
Bruce is just the most charming man I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He's funny and although His 178 involved a huge chunk of time to be sitting in one place and listening, he made the lessons interesting and was careful to give us breaks in between. He does give a lot of reading but it's all great stuff. The final wasn't hard either.
He is the best history teacher/professor I have had. He made the material easy to understand in his lectures and uses videos to stop the lectures from being boring. However, there is A LOT of required reading for this class. Overall he has a good sense of humor, a better teaching ability, and I learned a lot about a subject that I don't care for
PRAISE BRUCE!Literally one of the best teachers I have ever had. Makes the class clear, informative and interesting. Always positive, helpful and funny. Bruce is the kind of teacher that makes you want to succeed. The reading load was tough (a book per week) but enjoyable. Take his class, you won't be sorry!
Very good professor! One midterm, one (easy-)paper, one final. Attendance in section counts. Bad TA. Didn't do the reading, still got an A because Bruce's lecture notes and lectures are awesome and clear. He really gets you involved with the material. Loving history helps a lot too. Take any of his classes. Totally worth it.
Great profess. His lectures are very clear, and he uses videos to keep class interesting. If you're ever bored in class, his dorky jokes will keep you up. The reading is a bit demanding [one book a week, ouch] but the books can be found for super cheap, and you'll find it'll be hard to pass if you don't read. easy midterm, paper and final.
Bruce is the sweetest man ever! There's nothing but good things to say about him. He's an awesome Professor and is great at engaging students. He makes you want to learn. I recommend taking at lease one of his class before graduating.
Bruce is a great professor and and knows how to keep students engaged in class. He is extremely nice, helpful and gives extensions on papers within reason. I loved having him for core!
I've had 3 classes with Bruce and each one has been great. He is my favorite professor on campus because of his passion for his work, his engaging personality, and his friendly demeanor. Never pass a chance to take a class with this man because they're always great.
I loves Professor Thompson's class! He makes everything really clear and wants to help you do well in his class. He tells jokes and tries to make class fun by showing movies. I wish I could take all my classes with Professor Thompson.
Bruce is the best history professor at UCSC hands down. His lectures are always interesting, and the readings he selects are very useful. His tests and midterms are always fair and he is more than happy to help you if you ask. If you've never taken a Euro History class before, take any of his courses!
this class was a senior seminar and being interested in the subject was one thing but Bruce took it to a new level. it was kind of scary how much i loved his class, his teaching style, and the feeling of being comfortable around a professor.
Bruce is the best professor I've ever taken, he's a sweet adorable man and I could listen to him talk all day. I've taken 4 classes with him at UCSC and you will get a good grade if you go to lecture and take good notes! He's an easy grader. His lectures are great and incorporate films, music, documentaries. UCSC is lucky to have him :D
Thompson is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's hilarious and can make almost any topic interesting. If you do all the reading the essays and final should not be difficult. I'd definitely take this class again.
This guy has got to be one of the most amazing lecturers. All of his lectures were very engaging and very well organized. If you take notes during lectures, that's even better because you'll have a lot of stuff to work with for essays and discussions. Awesome professor. Definitely would consider taking another class with him.
He's a great teacher and a fun guy to listen to
So nice and supportive. He's very easygoing and always happy to help with anything that you need. Such a sweet guy!!!
He is a sweet man who knows a ton about his subject and provides an easy class where you can learn a lot. You can get an A by barely paying attention
Took Jewish lit for a GE. As a Jew interesting to learn more about my heritage, but the class got more and more dull as time progressed. Do NOT buy any of the books as you will waste your money. Midterm+Final were incredibly easy. Bruce is a super sweet guy who really cares about the material and his students. Good GE course
Bruce made learning about Jewish Literature and Culture into an amazing experience. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and it really shines through in his fantastic lectures. Each lecture feels like a story, connects to the theme of the class, and makes lecture something you actually want to go to. Highly recommended.
Bruce Thompson is incredibly kind, a good lecturer, and has interesting content. He helped review my papers, gave good feedback, and graded easily. I put minimal effort into this class and received good grades. There was a lot of reading and writing, no homework though.
Bruce is an amazing professor and this class is definitely worth it. He doesn't have a textbook but does require you to buy a lot of smaller books for the class. His lectures are really straightforward and he is a great lecturer. He really cares about the subject material.
Hilarious, information heavy, and interesting lectures.
Jewish Literature >Likable lecturer, charismatic, humorous and interesting in content >Passionate about Jewish people's literary contribution >Candidly presented worldview >Liberal >Understanding and believes in human kindness >Grades depend on few large assignments and attendance(2Essays-1Exam-Attendance) >Unclear expectations for assignments
took his70b and loved it, simple + easily comprehensible lectures, prof thomson was kind and accessible, great class!
He was extremely passionate about what he taught. I really liked his lectures at first but they started to get boring towards the end. I wouldn't bother buying the books you don't really need to. He is a really nice guy who knows what he is talking about.
Best professor Ive had and one of the kindest people Ive ever met. Take his class dude
I don't know if he altered the structure of the class from how it was previously, but I personally wouldn't characterize it as an "easy A". That could be contributed to my TA, but the essays were graded pretty harshly and criteria unclear. The 3hr final consists of analyzing 10 passages. Kinda ridiculous since I'm NOT a lit major and this is a GE!
The class isnt that bad. Professor Thompson is a very good person and practices what he teaches. His lectures were insightful and interesting. There are only 2 papers and a final commentary writing. You should really read the given readings to pass with an A. You could skip the readings, but it would be hard to pass being their are only 3 grades.
Easy class overall. Depending on your TA attendance for discussion and lecture will be paramount otherwise never really went. Graded on attendance, 2 papers, and a final where you comment on several passages from the authors covered over the quarter, easy final if you do some prep and pay attention last 2 weeks of class.
I love this man and recommend him to everyone I know. This class is so interesting and very low commitment, lots of books but he'll lend a few because he is just that nice. I didn't read on my own very much and still got an A+. He's so sweet and gentle and I adore him.
Bruce is such a wonderful professor! He is kind and absolutely hilarious. Because it was a film class we watched A LOT of interesting movies/documentaries. He doesn't lecture often, but all of his course notes are made available through canvas. The course is fairly easy but keep in mind your grade consists of 2 papers, attendance, and one final.
Possibly the kindest, sweetest man I've come by at UCSC. This class was mainly watching films in class, but when he does lecture, it's great. Make sure you read the "required readings" and use them in your essays.
Bruce is one of the funniest, nicest, enjoyable professor's I've ever had. His TA, Daniel, is also a nice guy who grades well. Highly recommend taking WWI with him. Assignments are 2 papers and a final. Attendance to section is mandatory. I learned a lot in this class, and the reading, although a lot, is very interesting to read.
GE:There are two papers, one 4 page and one 5 page then there is a final which is an in class essay but there are 4 prompts to choose from and you can take a cheat sheet with you plus you are given the prompts ahead of time. His TA steven green was great, he explained everything thoroughly, loved his workshops bc he would help develop an outline.
Reasonably easy class, especially if you're interested in European history. Class is a mix of him lecturing and playing videos. Is a good combination, and his lectures are well thought out. Had to write a 4 and 5 page paper, plus a straightforward final exam. He's extraordinarily kind, great to talk to in office hours.
Bruce is one of the most enthusiastic professors I have had at UCSC. The class consisted of 2 essays and a final, and section was mandatory. We primarily watched movies, which were well curated. It is recommended to stay the entire lecture since he sees leaving early as rude, and he punched a chair one time as a result of students leaving early.
Amazing lectures that make you care about what you are learning. Lots of reading but they are paired well with the class. 10/10 would take again, Prof. Thompson is a real gem to Santa Cruz. A real caring guy.
His teaching style wasn't for me, he teaches using printed word docs w/ lots of notes, no powerpoint. I checked out b/c that's not my learning style. On the bright side, he uploads these notes to Canvas but they're 20 pages long. Relatively easy as long as you know the general themes and info. Lots of reading, 1 book per 10 weeks 10 books.
Bruce is my favorite professor at UCSC! His lectures are so wonderful and entertaining and he writes super in-depth lecture notes so there is no reason to buy any of the books which I love because it saves me tons of money and time. So far I have taken two different classes by him and I'm already enrolled for another!
I love Bruce Thompson with all my heart. He is such a sweet, caring Professor who listens and gives great feedback. He is incredibly passionate about all of his classes and it shows. He intersperses movie clips so each class isn't 100 percent lecture. He gives a lot of reading, but it is mostly because he wants us to enjoy the books like he does.
A super kind professor that made me love history. I highly recommend taking any of his classes. He is also hilarious and creates engaging lectures. Workload is manageable and is really interesting as well.
I don't care what your major is, take a class with Bruce. His lectures are very entertaining and funny. He's really passionate about the content and wants his students to be too. He's also a pleasure to talk to outside of class. All around great guy.
Prof. Thompson was one of my first professors at UCSC and I absolutely loved this course! I took this course Fall 2020 so everything was online, but the grading and assignments were very straight forward. Very understanding of outside circumstances as well!!
Professor Thompson is soooooo passionate about what he teaches that it makes it interesting! you write papers plus a take home final
His lectures are well-structured and interesting. The grades are based on 3 papers, so if u get a tough T.A. you may be screwed. With a min 3.8 GPA all through school, I could not make this T.A. happy with my papers. Even after applying all the suggestions on improving my paper, full credit was not happening for me.
I learned a lot but I do recommend supplementing the course with EUROPA - The Last Battle (2017) Documentary, where you can hear a more true version of the motivations for war.
I love Bruce so much! He's the literal GOAT. I took HIS 70B this past fall and it was a total breeze. The lectures are so enjoyable and the class is super easy. The TAs were just as amazing as Bruce was. Totally recommend this class to anyone as its super fun, interesting, informative, enjoyable, and an easy A.
He's a really great professor. His lectures are very well thought out and interesting. You do have to spend a good bit of time outside of class to watch the movies, but they're really good and create interesting discussions in class and section. Grades are based on papers and section participation/attendance.
Prof. Thompson is an amazing lecturer, if not the best, that I've ever had. He can really make u understand the material w/o it being too difficult. That is such a good take considering how lengthy the actual material is. He is funny/ sweet, def a great professor with love for the students and his work. The work is essentially discussions/3 papers.
His class is very lecture heavy, but isn't very dense. He makes an effort to integrate primary source films into his course which keeps the material interesting and fresh. Attendance is mandatory in lecture. You're graded on two papers, attendance and a final which is also a paper. Lots of reading but you don't have to do all of it. 10/10 class.
What a wonderful man and professor! Only took this class for a GE but he made the course super enjoyable and interesting. Only graded off a couple papers and the final, but as long as youre engaged in lecture , youre good. Would definitely take him again!
Such a kind, funny man. 10/10 recommend taking a class with him.
it was an interesting course, there's definitely a lot of things to learn and professor thompson definitely makes it enjoyable. though he doesn't assign any homworks, there will be a lot of readings but you could just pick couple that you can write about for 3 papers that he will only assign.
Prof. Thompson is amazing! Grade was 90% 3 essays, 10% section attendance. I happened to need an extension on each assignment and each time, I was granted it. Although he assigns a lot of reading, you can easily get by with reading less than 20% of it. Highly recommend him, especially if you're looking for an easy GE :)
This class was very enjoyable. You're graded on 3 essays (each 30%) and participation/attendance (10%). I am not someone who is great at essays, but the Professor and TAs were accessible outside of class and helped me immensely. If you're looking for a laid-back GE with an amazing Professor, this is the one!
I LOVED Bruce! His lectures were engaging, you could tell he was very passionate and knowledgable. There were only three assignments (including the final). He is very generous with extensions and answering questions. Would love to take an upper div with him one day.
Professor Thompson is easily the best professor I've had so far as a student. His class is very lecture heavy but he's really incredible at making what would usually be pretty boring subjects extremely interesting and easy to understand. You can really see how much he cares and enjoys teaching which is a rarity in many professors.
I was attracted to the high RMP rating. Halfway into the quarter, our TA gave a horrible grade. I tried to msg him but he just changed my thesis and I had to rewrite the whole thing. Needed a 100 on my 2nd paper or final to pass the class w an A (which he will most likely not give). Last week of the quarter, only 25% of my grade is actually graded.
This is the only professor at UCSC with 136 ratings with a 5.0 rating. It's too suspect and after taking his class I now know why. If you scroll down long enough, you'll see a lot of one sentence reviews just giving five stars around 2004-2005 not really explaining the class itself other than complimenting him. Would not take again.
Thompson is an excellent lecturer, fair grader, and he really cares about what he teaches. There are only 3 essays for this class so make sure you work hard on them. Both Thompson and the TAs are super nice and will help you if you need it. I loved his class and always looked forward to his lectures!!
Bruce is my favorite professor at UCSC. He is the absolute kindest man. One of the things I really appreciated about his lectures, from His70 and His167A, is the historical photos. They are amazing and horrifying. It really sticks with you. He also manages to make the class enjoyable, because he's lovely, even though the content can be depressing.
Really great lecturer and super open to feedback, the TAs did all the grading but he was very accessible for any questions about assignments and gave lots of good tips
Professor Thompson is an absolute sweetheart. Maybe the sweetest man. He is very passionate about teaching and it shows! He left very meaningful feedback on every paper for the class (2 papers and a written final) and is very accessible outside of class. I would take a class with him again in a heartbeat!
Bruce Thompson is one of the best professors I've had so far at UCSC. He is a funny and engaging lecturer who clearly cares deeply about what he's teaching and enjoys it. He creates lively class discussions and assigns interesting readings for his class. His teaching will make you want to come to class every day.
He seems like he has a level of knowledge about the Renaissance and European exploration that is slightly higher than that of a high school student. Read a Wikipedia page and save yourself some time. Overall, Professor Thompson doesn't seem to be interested by the content of the course. Just read a book or listen to a Hardcore History.
Professor Thompson was extremely nice throughout the quarter. There was not too much homework other than an essay. The course was only based on attendance, a midterm, an essay, and lastly the final.
Phenomenal professor. Kind caring and inspirational. You always hope to get a professor like this in college one that opens your eyes to new history and literature, and makes you passionate about exploring new things!
I cannot begin to explain how much I adore Bruce Thompson! Not only is he an exceptional and intelligent professor, but he also makes his lectures so interesting and funny. My course wasn't difficult at all -- barely any homework and our assignments were all papers. Take one of his classes and please appreciate him for the little goofball he is!
Bruce Thompson is my favorite professor I've had so far! He's so so funny and such a delight, he made a class about historical failures not depressing and actually super engaging! Put simply, he rocks.
He was the most depressing professor ever.
Please don't take his classes.
Professor Thompson is truly one of the best. His lectures are engaging and he makes even dry topics interesting. With the help of resources like unstuck AI, I aced the essays. Definitely take this class if you can!
I'm nowhere near a history major, but I want to take all of his classes! He makes every aspect of class topics to be incredibly interesting! There was never a full day and class participation was incredibly high! Everyone I know who's taken one of his classes raves about his style of teaching and so do I. Papers were sometimes rough but manageable.
Bruce was a great professor. Very engaging and he cares deeply about the material he is teaching. Easily one of the best professors I have had since coming to UCSC. I took his class LIT164D for a GE requirement, absolutely would try to find another class taught by him to fill my other requirements.
Professor Thompson is an extremely caring professor. He takes pride in what he is teaching and lectures very clearly concerning the films we watch in class. The class is graded off on three papers; however, the TAs in discussion break down how to write the papers effectively. All in all, a great professor!
Very cool teacher, watched interesting holocaust films that taught me new perspectives. He's a very educated film critique but doesn't act entitled or posh. Your grade is based off 3 papers you write but as long as you watch all the movies and do at least 30% of the reading you'll be set. Overall really enjoyed the class and definitely recommend.
Bruce is a very funny professor with little assigned work outside of 3 papers. Linda was also a great TA. Sometimes the lectures got boring and he focused more on the intellectual history of the war a bit too much, but otherwise he is a great professor for both upper and lower divs.
Prof Bruce is simply the best. He is hilarious and genuinely a BRILLIANT professor. He has so much knowledge and decades of experience in his field. He has lots of cool stories and interesting perspectives. I only wish lectures were longer than an hour. He has so much to say that class often felt rushed, and I only wanted to hear more from him.
super nice and does a good job connecting with students, grade only based on 3 essays, relatively straight forward prompts, lecture heavy with information, lots of weekly readings
Favorite professor here at UCSC! Inspired me to become a history major. I attended office hours frequently, which really helped me get a better understanding of the material and helped with my essays. I recommend him if you want a history class that is actually interesting, even if your not a humanities major.
Goated history professor. He is super sweet and funny, has spent decades as a historian and has lots of great stories and cool information.
amazing professor, caring and kind
One of the worst classes I've taken at ucsc. Thompson's lecture are fractured and unorganised and mostly consist of anecdotes and huge block quotes that he reads directly off the slides. Nearly every lecture he plays lengthy, history channel grade documentary clips. Why as a professor are you relying on cable tv documentaries to teach a course.
