Many will think his class is easy. Its not that. Its simply his teachings. He is very clear and always available for help. He makes math very enjoyable.(Who would have thought?)

Very tough class, but Dr. Trace is an extremely knowledgeable and awesome professor!! You will learn alot, but be ready to work you butt off! Analysis is just hard :)

This is the guy to take for Cal II. Speaks english very well, goes very slow and makes sure everyone in the class understands before he moves on. Test are just like inclass problems, no surprises. They need more teachers like him in the Math department.

dr. trace is a wonderful teacher! i transferred to his class after originally being in a class w/ a professor who couldn't speak english, and it was the best decision i made this semester. if you do the homework and copy down the example problems off the board, you will have no surprises on the tests. great man...take him if you can!

You will hear "Are you with me?" approximately four times per minute when he lectures. Dr. Trace is extremely dry and monotonous, but a very nice guy nonetheless. He'll go out of his way to help you if you need it.

Too much to say. I am trying to get Trace to be my math teacher as long as I have to take it. He is very helpful and nice. Material is not hard. He is just a great teacher. Sometimes he gets caught up in math and doesn't know when to stop. Other than that Bruce Trace is a real stand up guy.

Bruce Trace is the man to have. His tests are 7 questions and very easy, if you just study a little bit. The final is only 12 questions, also very easy. All questions come from the easiest hw. Bruce is very helpful and covers the material in an idiotproof manner. He is always checking to see are you with him and will not continue if you are not

Awesome teacher, had a D+ average on tests because I never studied, but if your Final Grade is higher than 4 Tests + Final Average he just uses your Final Grade, I studied Friday before my exam on Saturday, got an A, 4.0 baby. Not bad at all.

"Do you understand folks?" You will hear this at least twice a day along with "Are you with me" but hes a great teacher and really makes sure everyone understands the material. Tests are 7 questions from the sections and the Final is 12 questions. His tests and finals are there to test you, not trick you, everything is straight forward. Great teach

Dr. Trace is an excellent teacher! He is extremely helpful inside the classroom. I never used his office hours but he has them. His tests are 7 questions and are really straightforward. Definitely work ALL of the homework. He is really helpful when it comes to test time. I highly recommend anyone take him for calculus! Get his man if you can!

Best math professor I think anyone could ask for. If you don't understand something he will go back and answer questions. Seven question tests, no homework, and he sticks his chalk covered hand in his back pocket and keeps a white spot on the back of his pants. I actually had FUN in Calculus! I have already recommended Dr. Trace to everyone I can.

One of the best math teachers I have ever had. Great, clear speaker and after every big process he asks for questions. Great at explaining every step, and board notes are EXTREMELY clear. Tests are somewhat tricky but if you do the homework he assigns (which is minimal, but effective), you should be fine. Loved having him

I love Dr. Trace. :) He is a friendly guy and a very good teacher. His "interesting" phrases (About a theorem, "Let's take this baby out for a stroll!") are entertaining. His Real Analysis tests were pretty tough, but his final (which can count for 100% of your grade) was not too bad.

Great math Professor! Asks if you have questions. Homework not required. Clear speaker. Tests are hard but if you go over your homework you should be fine. If you score higher on your final he takes that grade as your final score.

Good teacher to have. He always takes time to go over homework questions in class. If you do better on the final that will be your final grade. Do the homework!! Test questions are very similar. Tests are fairly short and straight forward. You will hear "are you with me folks?" at least 3 times during each class.

Great Teacher, he takes time to explain things and does so effectively. He gives out homework and although it is not mandatory you will find if you take the time to do it and understand it you will do well on the tests.

He is very helpful. If you don't understand, he will try his best make sure you get on the right track. The only thing I hate is we have 5 problems our test and they are worth 20 points a piece. We go over a lot of material and really doesn't like doing review before the test. But I have learned a quite a bit in his school. Overall he's wonderful.

I had a 68 test avg going into the final. He gave us 2 solid weeks of reviewing for the final. The way he does it is if your final test grade is higher than your test avg, then your final test grade becomes your overall average! I made an A on the final! If you're doing bad, don't drop! You can still ace his class even if your tests are bad!

NOT a good Linear Algebra/Matrix Theory teacher. Maybe this class is "his baby" or something. He kept telling us "I like keeping this course on the abstract level" and that is exactly what it was. I made straight As through Cal series and had NO CLUE what was going on in this class. Finished with an A with no clue what happened in the course...

The class is difficult, but the tests aren't bad, and they're pretty much your whole grade. He doesn't take up homework and hardly assigns it. Do good on the final and you're good.

I hardly ever went to class, but ended up with an A. There was no HW or quizzes - just 3 tests and the final. If the final is higher than your test average, then it becomes your final grade. He doesn't really 'teach', he just writes tons of stuff on the board. I just taught myself using the book and aced the tests (5 q each)/final (8 q's).

Like others have said, he "likes to keep the class on an abstract level" for math majors, I would think that would be helpful. For me it was not. Although I didn't end up doing so well I feel he is pretty straight forward and would take him again if I had to redo the class.

I don't know if it was cause I took this class over the summer or what but we have no review for any of the tests, which are pretty much your whole grade. He'll teach new material for a week thats not on a test and not give us any review. The first test was wicked easy then I made a 57 on the second one. Overall he's tough

To pass this class... Do your homework and understand it! Not too many problems per assignment and don't pay attention to the ones that are word problems or say prove, etc (i.e the last few problems etc) To pass his finalstudy old tests...not same problems but the same type of problem. Going to studyblue or koofers will help tremendously for final.

Going to class is not mandatory, in my opinion i wouldn't bother showing up. His teaching method varies over chapters (bad in general). Textbook used for homework but good to have so you can teach yourself the material (strongly recommend). grade in class is determined only by 4 tests over 4 chapters and then the final. knowing the homework helps.

Dr. Trace might be the best calculus teacher you can get at UA. Having gone through all 3 calculuses, he is by far the best/easiest. His tests do test your knowledge of the material, but there are no tricks. And anyone who said we was unhelpful did not ask for help. Whenever I went to him he was extremely kind and willing to help. Dr. Trace's grading policy is set up so that your tests ARE your grade, and if the final is better than your overall grade, it becomes your grade. He doesn't use technology for homework or notes. No math stumps him; he knows his stuff. If you do the homework and study, you will succeed. I repeat: DO THE HOMEWORK. I highly recommend him.

I had Dr. Trace for calculus 2 and 3. He knows his stuff. He explains everything very clearly (though it is tough material!). The homework isn't checked, but do it anyway. It'll seriously help you.

Trace is a really organized, straightforward professor who cares about the subject and wants to help his students pass. He starts his lectures on with the theories and proofs behind the concepts. These often aren't necessary for the test but they can help comprehension anyway. Do the homework, attend class, and study hard for the final for an A.

He assigns homework every night, but if you do the homework you should be fine for his tests. His tests are mostly just the basic concepts from the chapter. That being said he is a super boring lecturer. He doesn't post the homework online so you have to show up to get the questions, otherwise I would never go to class.

I recommend going to class but really its all on how much you care. Grading is 4 tests for 75 points(5 questions each) and a 200 (8 question) point final.

Ideal teacher to take if you like to cram and slack. The final can become your semester average and plenty manage to come in only studying for a week the whole semester at the end and doing fine. Very helpful in class by showing examples and going slow. Try not to slack, but you can always make up for it at the end with the easy final.

He assigns homework every night but it's never checked. His lectures are very theory based and confusing at times, but don't worry because the tests are extremely easy. They come from the first few homework problems of each section. They're 5 problems each. The final is comprehensive, but it's basically like the old tests. Take Trace if you can!

Don't take him if you're not a theoretical learner. Trace is into theory instead of clear cut number examples, resulting in boring lectures and teaching myself from the textbook. I honestly did not find him as great as other people. His ratings are high because of his exams. They're definitely doable for someone who skips class and has past exams.

Calc 1 was a review for me so having Bruce was the absolute best thing that happened to me. His homework is never due, the only grades are the tests so you can work on what you need to and skip over the easy stuff. His lectures can get confusing at times but the tests are easy and he's a cool guy. Taking him again for Calc 3

Dr. Trace definitely knows what he is talking about when it comes to Linear Algebra. He often goes way over your head with concepts. The entire class is theory based, which isn't a bad thing however the theory can be extremely overwhelming. In general his tests are much easier than the classwork, but they are 5 questions worth 20pts each.

Dr. Trace has taught this class for a long time, I suggest finding someone who has taken it before and getting old tests. His lectures are long and confusing and often extremely wordy, but the tests are extremely easy compared to the classwork. If you do get old tests, make sure to still go to class because he could change up the test questions.

Dr. Trace was an amazing professor, he simplified calculus 3 in a way that not many could. Big on theory but never really tests on the theory itself; however, knowing the material well for the exam could be beneficial. He assigns homework daily, but its not required so essential its up to you if you want to really learn the material. Great class!

Loved this class. Grade depends completely on tests, so homework is optional. Tests come completely from the notes and homework problems (which he takes questions on in class). If you take notes every day, you will do well. He really loves math and he literally writes exactly what you should write down on the board, word for word. Cute old man

Don't let people fool you. It's easy to do well in this class purely with his old tests (that he barely changes year after year), but by no means is he a good teacher. I did quite well in this class, but couldnt tell you the first thing about multivariable calculus. He goes very fast and assigns homework that is impossibly long, though optional.

Of the Calc 3 teachers, he is the easiest (Calc 3 is very hard, get that down). His tests are 5 questions that are very similar to the notes and homeworks (which is optional, but I'd advise to do it), but one bad question & you're screwed. I failed the first test, but studied super hard for the final & aced it which can count as your entire grade!

One of the most boring classes I've ever had, and I'm a Math major. Theory is all he teaches and he rarely works legitimate problems. They say if you have old tests you'll be fine, but he changed things up completely. He's an unfair grader and will give you 5/15 points for a problem you had the right answer to but not the "right" work. Don't trust.

Unless you are a math major and want to know the "why" or you REALLY enjoy theory-based math classes, I would avoid Bruce Trace. About 80% of the course is proofs and the other 20 is calculations, which are very basic. If you havn't taken a theory based course before, you're probably going to have a tough time. I would definitely not take him again

I loved Bruce Trace as a Calc I professor. You can tell that he is passionate about what he is teaching and he is pretty funny. He does a great job teaching. The tests are only 5 problems but it is clear what he is going to put on them, so you can study accordingly. Do the homework and show up to class and you will be able to get an A.

He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Around 50 out of 80 failed our last exam. I didn't even know calculus required formulas until I got a tutor. I only go to class to get the homework problems, because those will be on the test most likely.

First of all, he doesn't grade homework. That being said, you should still do the problems he gives you to make sure you understand them. He'll go over those problems in class, but only if you ask. His tests are very easy. He'll give you hard examples and homework problems, but the tests only test your understanding of the concepts. Pretty easy A.

Unless you've already got a mind for mathematical abstraction (if you're not an enthusiast or prodigy, you probably don't) you will struggle. Trace has a strictly "verbal" teaching style which means few examples on what's actually being proved by his theorems. I learned more LinA from MITOCW w/ Strang. Also, no textbook so good luck on studying.

Linear Algebra with Trace was the hardest class I have ever taken. He makes it passable, but not easy for you. I made it out with an A, but this took 23+ hours of studying for each test. He teaches almost entirely through proofs, which takes some getting used to if you haven't been taught via theory before. Avoid him if you can, if not, you'll live

Given that Calc 3 is not the easiest subject in the world, I thought this class was incredibly easy. The tests were straight forward and based directly off of the notes and homework. As long as you show up and pay attention, you should be fine.

Don't be fooled by what people say about Trace. He is indeed a very smart man. In class what he teaches goes over a good portion of your head. That worried me. His tests are much easier than homework and class notes. Go to class, I didn't.

Class is not mandatory and there is no homework for a grade. His grading is based off of 4 tests and a final. There are a few years worth of his past tests floating around which everyone seems to have. His tests don't change much year to year so those are your best bet for studying. The test are short and easy if you know what you are doing.

Best professor I ever had. Took MA 227 and 301 with him. Lecture has a very intense base in theory, homework and tests are mainly calculation. Homework is hard. Tests are easy. A must-take for Math/CS majors - has a magical way of explaining things that just makes sense to everyone. Wonderful jokes.

Weekly quizzes are super easy concept questions, homework is optional, attendance is not mandatory but definitely recommended (by me), he clearly presents the theory and then does great in-class examples. Bruce Trace is an amazing professor. He has quizzes every Monday that are true/false and if you go to class you will most likely get them right. There are two tests that are exactly like the homework (optional), and he gives a lot of partial credit, so I suggest you run through them a few days before the test. Overall, he's amazing.

He mainly just reviews problems/homework in class, so if you can teach yourself from the textbook you pretty much dont even have to go to class. He either lets you take 2 exams 20% each and a final or 40%, or just the final for 80%. One matlab project thats super easy for 10%, and a one question true/false quiz every week. Tests are 4 questions.

He is definitely the easiest math professor I've had. Dr. Trace is very easy to understand, and he explains everything until you understand it. There were true/false quizzes once a week. Second time taking a class from Dr. Trace and I'd recommend him to anyone. Attendance is optional and homework is not graded, but I would encourage you not to skip out on either because they really do help prepare you for tests. Examples in class are hard, but tests are significantly easier so if you understand the homework at all, you'll be fine

Dr. Trace is a nice guy with a good sense of humor, and his lectures are interesting. While attendance is not graded, he does not communicate any information (even which chapters are covered) by email or on Blackboard so it is critical to attend class regularly. One test can be the difference between an A and an F, but he grades fairly.

Ok, so you want to start this class by studying immediately 3-4 hours a day, every day. He uses the book only so no MyLabsPlus. He grades 5 test with 5 problems each and does not grade the homework. When I was in the tutoring center, 9/10 students had him if that says something about how hard he is

If you haven't taken a calculus class in high school, I would strongly recommend another professor. He is very smart and knows what he is teaching but skips steps and isn't the best at explaining to first time calculus students. Lectures are proof heavy with very few example problems like the homework. Lots of tutoring and studying was required.

Trace is the man. Don't take him if you haven't already taken a calc class at UA. Make sure you have good study habits and that you genuinely like math. As a math minor, he's been incredible to learn from.

Bruce Trace is an intelligent man but his lectures are often hard to understand. He teaches mainly in theory and uses few numbers in examples. He gives 4 WebAssign tests including a final. Each question on these question counts for 3% of your final grade. Essentially if you miss 1 single question on each test, you are automatically at a 88. Insane.

Homework and tests are on webassign. Tests are difficult and are only 6 questions. Homework is not too bad and there is usually one do a week. Difficult class tests are not made similar to homework really have to know your math.

He stands at the board, writes a bunch of theories out, and does approximately 5 examples. Homework assignments are very easy but do not always help you study because of how far ahead he teaches (i.e we finished learning test 3 material before taking test 2). Homework and tests are online so partial credit is not given.

Trace is good at conveying material and explaining the calculus behind things but he could focus a bit more on examples and less on theory. Overall, he's a solid professor and the tests aren't too hard. It's not really his fault the way UA is making these exams online. But Trace is understanding of this and makes the homework 20% of the final grade

Dr. Trace is a very smart man, but his grading method is absolute garbage. 80% of your grade rests upon 28 questions (including a drop test, 34 without.) Dr. Trace does not provide any guidance for his tests aside from the words, "Look at the notes and the homework." Which, you guessed it, are not reflected on the test. Avoid if it all possible.

Took for MATH227. He explains things way past what you need for test. 4 6-question midterms. You have very little room for error in this class for an A. Loves math and knows everything super well. You just have to figure out what parts of his lectures are valuable for the tests.

Great professor to have, explains more than necessary for the test. Only problem is that tests are very few questions. Got three wrong on a final and dragged my grade down. Don't overthink on the tests!!!

Dr. Trace is one of the best professors I have had. Makes Calculus easy. Lectures are theory based and in depth but tests are not nearly as hard as homework. tests are short and multiple choice and true/false.

Professor Trace is very intelligent. He definitely knows what he's teaching, but often his lectures are very theoretical/proof-heavy. You need to focus on the homework and less on the notes when studying for tests. I studied my HW thoroughly for tests and finished with an A+. Don't get freaked out by the lecture, and study by knowing the homework.

Dr. Trace uses theory to teach, which may be difficult for someone who isn't used to that. The best way to prepare for the tests is to know how to do the homework as well as examples from lectures. If you want to do well in the class, you should spend time outside of class doing practice problems and try to fully understand the content.

Great at teaching the concepts of calculus, it sometimes went over my head in class, but when you do the hw it all connects and makes sense. I did hate the tests, there were 5 multiple choice and 1 T/F for all of them. So you have to know how to do the basic hw probs and know lecture material.

First of all, I like Trace. He is a good man and definitely knows what he is talking about. However, the lectures are very proof-based and often go over your head. As he says, you often need to "bring your helmet." The good part is that the tests are very simple and much easier than the homework. Go to class and write down the examples, not proofs.

You can take tests and do homework, or have your entire grade be the final. Mr. Trace was a great teacher, but only explains concepts in one way. Do not expect to pass if you do not show up to class.

I would avoid Trace if at all possible. He is an intelligent man, but his grading policies are completely unreasonable. Did a question completely correct on a test, entered it wrong on the computer, and received 0 credit. I dropped his class and recieved an A+ the next semester from another professor. Not worth the headache.

Bruce Trace is essentially a walking textbook. All of the complex problems come directly from the textbook and make very little sense in the grand scheme of things. The tests are beyond easy if you can sift through the endless theory that he hurls at you.

Great professor all round; Good lectures(technically optional, but there is a quiz every Monday) and easy tests(simple examples of the topics). Online HW can be done for extra credit, and HW assigned in class is purely optional, but helps.

He's very smart and knows what he's doing, but his lectures are incredibly boring and at times were hard for me to follow. Honestly, I wouldn't suggest him if you aren't the best at math... the only reason I did as well as I did is because I took calculus in high school.

The best math professor I have ever had. Had him for Cal 3 as well and he was phenomenal, the best at teaching the concepts and basics of each topic for you to get a true understanding of the material.

Bruce is a great man, however his class was super hard. The tests were fine, as long as you did your homework, but Bruce would spend so much time on proofs that didn't matter during lectures. Be ready to "get out your helmet and shoulder pads" as he says.

This class was the easiest thing I've ever taken. The only grade you get is the final at the end of the 5 weeks and it's take home. I never went to class and ended with an A. Would highly advise to take this professor over other options.

This man is fantastic. For MA 145,. He has a grading system where if you make good on the final. There are T/F quizzes weekly that added up to 10% of overall grade. He is accessible outside of class and will do whatever he can to help you make a good grade in the course. Its hard at first to follow along with lectures, but it DOES get better.

Dr. Trace is incredibly intelligent. The downfall of this is he is so far removed from a beginner mindset that he cannot effectively teach the topics. I would only recommend him to someone majoring in Mathematics and really, REALLY into Math Theory.

A very nice man teaching a course that is really out of place in the computer science curriculum. Take home final with 5 questions, easy if you're comfortable with proofs and extra easy if you can write it up in LaTeX.

There was a quiz every Tuesday and I think I failed like half of them and still did fine in the class. The tests/final have simple problems and you can get partial credit so as long as you thoroughly review before them you should be alright. Bruce's teaching wasn't helpful but he was pretty cool, and he rounded everyone after the final.

5 question take home final is the entire course grade. Definitely take notes in class (or get them from someone else), not everything will be found in the textbook. Trace is a great prof, I've had him for 3 math classes and earned As.

Each class began with him going over any questions from the homework then a long lecture after. He lectured right out of the book so it was easy to follow along with the book. He taught with mostly theory instead of procedure! Tests were very short only 3 or 4 questions. MatLab project was super easy and he basically gives you the exact code.

I have never met a teacher who grades like this one, or who focuses on Theory more than this professor. His tests are 4 questions only, and his quizes are composed of 1 true/false question. He is very hard to listen to in class as he is very quiet and hard to follow since he spends all 50 min lecturing while you take notes. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Lectures can be pretty heavy on the theory. Homework isnt graded. One question, T/F quiz every Tuesdaythe lowest 3 (out of 13) are dropped. The exams are just reskins of the homework and textbook example problems; know how to solve those and youll be fine. He gives you all the code youll need for the MATLAB assignment. Fair grader.

He is a nice guy but does not make this class easy. He reads directly off his notes and the notes are not helpful for the tests. He makes up his homeworks and (again) the notes are not helpful. He is a harsh grader as well. I am getting a math minor and have never struggled in a math class like this before.

Bruce. Bruce is the man. This class will feel overwhelming until the add/drop date and then it will be better, but still work. One time I did a problem completely wrong and this guy gave me 15/25 points. Also he will email you back on the same night without fail. Probably at 3am, but at least he's accessible. Also the guy really loves math.

Was very nice but not a good teacher. He would spend 15 mins out of an hour for class reading through his notes. All his content was original so very hard to study/find help. He went straight into proofs and did them all semester, nothing like the other sections. Never knew what to expect on tests either. His office hours did not help either.

Very test heavy, 80% of your grade is based on tests. He is very focused on proofs and concepts, so the tests were usually only 3 questions that 20% of your grade depended on. If you really like math this class will be like cake for you but if you aren't you should probably take someone else. He gives you free paper and paperclips during the tests.

Relatively easy class. Graded only on 6 homeworks and 4 exams. Exams are pretty simple, often just like the homework. You will feel unprepared, but then the exam will be fine. He just reads off of a pdf all class, but he goes over everything. He says "Does this make sense folks?" and "Alright" almost every minute, you'll get numb to it.

The class will seem very intimidating for the first 2-3 weeks because he is very theory heavy. He often makes the material sound more difficult than it actually is, but he definitely knows his stuff. Quizzes are 1 question T/F, but you can drop 3. MATLAB project was a breeze, and the tests aren't too difficult if you prepared.

Very smart man and a good teacher. My only knock is that he spends the majority of class time proving the theorems, rather than showing us examples of how to use it. I was terrified of the tests because of this, but they were actually quite easy. Also had him for MATH 302, which was much easier than MATH 247 in my opinion.

Bruce Trace is a great professor. He lectured for about 20 minutes each day and then let us out, and that's all you need to pass this class. MATH 302 is the easiest math class I've taken at UA. The grade comes from two take home exams that are both pretty straightforward, and the second can replace the first.

He is very funny and likes to have fun during lecture. Whole class is lecture-oriented. He walks you through proofs very well. The course is rigorous, and he answers questions well. Overall good experience with him, but do know that the expectation is that you will work a lot of proofs and study hard in your free time.

Dr. Trace was an incredibly inspirational professor. I got chills multiple times listening to him. He is old-fashioned, and LOVES math. He is very theory-heavy, so if theory is not your thing, maybe look elsewhere. He probably said: "aaaare you with me?" at least 1000 times this semester! Take him! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

His tests are easy; all you have to do is just regurgitate the proofs he does in class. He gets very theory-heavy in class, but just copy the proofs down, and you honestly only need to understand the short ones that he'll put on a test. The 3-page theorems he proves are just for his sake. He's nice and helpful, but just be ready for lecturing.

This class is a joke and Bruce Trace is completely delusional. Lectures consist of him reciting the textbook from memory and demonstrating graduate-level math theory while pulling letters and theorems from thin air with the occassional "is it making sense folks" sprinkled in. Luckily his tests are super easy, don't expect to learn a thing though.

No graded homework and weekly take home"T or F" quizzes, with drops. Also get a drop test, so lots of room for error. Tests consisted of proofs that were directly from the notes. Lectures are dry, but that's discrete. Go to class and you will do well. Also writing credit for free lol

Professor Trace's class is a mixed bag. The lectures can be dry, but his tests are surprisingly manageable if you stay on top of the material. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for preparing, along with the free textbook. Overall, not a bad choice if you're willing to put in the work.
