Easy course, great curve scale, interesting professor, test are moderately hard
huge curve
very interesting character, class can drag on however, tests not too bad, huge curve, and a nice guy
Nice guy, test are mod. hard but HUGE curve, class can drag but not bad overall.
Funny to watch in class, tests are tough though. Huge curve but tests are abstract and problem solving.
Great professors, real fun to watch during class. Kinda out of his mind, but quite entertaining. Some found tests difficult, but certainly manageable.
BORING, NOT FUN, CRAZY, AND UNHELPFUL... teaches straight from the book so most of the time lectures are pointless and boring. I don't reccomend.
The man is out of his mind, he is crazy but he knows economics. He will answer and explain any question that you have but sometimes the answers make no sense. Tests have a HUGE curve: A's start at 80% so I say it is an easy class.
Bruce is absolutely insane. His lectures are all over the place. He isn't clear whatsoever. He's good for a laugh cause he's crazy, but thats about it.
very hard to follow. lectures make no sense whatsoever
this is such a boring class. your grade is based on three tests...one of which is the final and it's 50% of your grade. the tests are SO HARD, and he doesn't prepare you at all. there is a huge curve, but it doesn't help much. avoid this class.
Crazy, horrible class
Easy class, just have to sit through boring lectures but he makes bad jokes that are pretty amusing. Tests are all multiple choice so they are pretty easy as well.
Man was this class boring. 2.5 hours of sitting there when I should have left the class during the break every time. Tests are pretty easy cuz they are multiple choice. He's really repetetive in class so the stuff should stick in your mind if you're awake
he is a cute old man, but my are his lectures the worst. He doesnt care if you are in class..sometimes takes role. grades are based only on test, and 25-30 question multiple choice.
I recommend this class to people who learn the best through only reading the book, studying it, and taking multiple choice tests. Vanderporten is a really nice and funny guy. Not a very good lecturer, but overall not too bad of a professor.
he's a hard teacher, test is horrible tricky. Be careful when taking him
I would have to agree with the general concensus that this man is nuts. It is a blessing that his tests are curved so widely as there is no cohesive link between the book, lectures, and tests. Econ majors be wary, and take this class if you are up to the challenge of being an independent student.
tests are kind of hard, but he has a very generous curve. lecture is so boring and he repeats himself a lot, but he seems to be a nice man and tries to make things interesting. word of caution: he makes mistakes when correcting tests so b careful!
He's a horrible teacher!!! Don't take him or you'll be sorry. His tests are hard, big curve! That's not surprising. Notes, book, and class lectures don't hold together, he's all over the place. Very confusing and not organized. Attendance counts so go to class!!!

He is a sweet old man, who is pretty funny. But, his tests are tricky and his final is killer. Big curve though. Take him if you can learn out of the book, because he is not clear. But, he is good intentioned
WOW...stay away! Lectures were the most boring out of all my classes at Loyola. Attendance counts!!! If you are absent alot (like I was cuz of work schedules), he isn't understanding and actually treats you rudely and mean. Tests are very tricky! Read questions and answers carefully!
one of the worst classes i have ever been in.He is boring, makes you want to sleep instead of pay attention, and is just strange. He is a good laugh every once in awhile because of the way he acts. A plus about the class is that he has a good curve so its a easier to pass.my suggestion,DONT TAKE HIM
Overall he is a bit nuts, but interesting. If you are into Economics and you can learn through a combination of the book and lecture, you'll do fine. He is not easy at all. You have to really study to do well, but he is definitely doable if you like the subject.
Easiest econ class. He gives out the notes and study guides that will be on the tests. Huge curve and easy tests with no surprise questions. Everything he gives out in class will be on tests. Do homeworks and go to class-he'll make you laugh.
He is a great teacher and fun to listen to. He can he a little confusing but once you get into his mindset its the easiest class. Great guy and really funny.
knows his stuff, but a little confusing during lecture. it's hard to know what you're supposed to learn. 3 multiple choie exams. not a stickler about attendance. recommend if good at teaching yourself.
He's adorable! Such a cute and funny old man. His lectures seemed very unclear and boring at first, but try to pay attention and that'll change. grades tests on huge curves, i had to read the text before exams to prepare, also study notes and handouts. final was easy. he prepared us 4it well.
This man is hilarious. Just pay attention in class, study handouts, and do the homework and you'll pass the tests. Some find this class boring though. He sticks with the material. You just need to have an interest i guess. He is really funny. Can never remember where he puts his dry erase markers. I recommend him to those with interest in the subj.
ehhhh he's an all right professor, so funny, and really random. kept me fairly entertained throughout class. He can be confusing though, so read the chapters and you'll do fine. you don't even need to come to class if you're making a B or higher and if you read the chapters you will be. He's super sweet, and tries his best to make things clear.
great teacher, only 3 tests(2 then the final). Just pay attention in class and ur good. This guy is funny as hell and the class is nothing to worry too much about. just relax and take it easy
every boring and doen't make any sense, plus u don't have to go to class and on three tests but tests meake no sense
Um.. pretty much the sweetest little man ever! He's one of those guys you wish was your grandpa so you can just run up and give him a hug. He tries hard and get very excited when someone participates in class. His tests are a little difficult at times, but he is VERY willing to help if he sees an effort.
i don't mean to be mean but vanderporten is one of the worst professors at Loyola. He's a really sweet nice old man but his teaching SUCKS. He's extremely scatter-brained and you can barely understand a word he is saying! I never expected microeconomics to be so hard to understand until i had him try to explain/teach it!
Like the others, sweet old man, but BAD prof. If you want to teach yourself ECON and not go to class you'll prob do fine but if you don't get ECON easily take someone else.

This guy's a little crazy. What's in the book can't really hurt you, but his tests are mostly lecture, so show up everyday. However, it should be noted that he's not so hot on answering questions. Because of this, all the information is in the book, and if you have trouble getting the concepts, you pretty much teach yourself. There're worse though.
terrible class. its boring and you can barely understand what the teacher says. i feel bad for the guy cuz hes so old he should prob retire but still the class sucks. tests can be tricky. definitly need to study carefully for them. lots of problems to work out.
Nice guy. Very difficult to understand in class b/c of voice and random discussion of topics. Even though class sucks GO...Tests are on what is covered in class. Nice curve.
pretty easy professor, but kind of strange. has trouble speaking coherently due to a botched surgery, but very eager to help if someone doesn't understand. great guy to boot.
Vanderporten was a great teacher, except for the fact that he took a leave of absense in the middle of the semester... but he is an easy teacher that makes sure that you understand and will help you if you don't. My only complaint is that he jumps around a lot and can be kind of confusing, but when it comes to exams they're straightforward and scal
Not so great on communication. I have a night class, repeats himself all the time, its difficult to sit through. Tests, not to bad, mostly on lectures. Nice guy, but I've had other econ prof, (Hayford specifically) who have been much easier to understand
Take it from a Loyola Honor student; do not take him. He has pretty much lost it in his old age. Jumps from subject to subject without event saying and often loses his place in lectures. He's really nice, and somewhat amusing, but unreliable when it comes to teaching. He uses curves of epic proportions on his tests. Class is not hard or easy.
Not a challenging class, he gives you a study guide before every class and just study those topics in depth and you'll do fine. Text is not needed just use the internet to find your answers for the study guide
BORING. You WILL fall asleep. Sometimes he is hard to understand and his lectures and hard to follow. BIG curve on the tests and he's a nice guy--but I wouldn't recommend if you're an econ major or care about learning.
Brucie V is the greatest! He is a sweet little old man who comes into class all dis-combobulated! He is not a great teacher so if you have a hard time learning material on your own or have never taken an econ class before you might wanna be weary of this class. He IS very easy with grading though. Takes attendance sparatically. I LOVE BRUCIE V!!!!
I learned absolutely nothing taking him. He is one of the most incompetent professors out there. Jumps from subject to subject and just writes random stuff on the board. If you want to learn anything about economics do not take him. The tests are easy because of the outrageous curves. I don't know how this guy still gets paid from Loyola.
I blew off 80 percent of his classes and still got out with an A (mainly because an 87 is still an A). Age got the best of this guy, but he isn't completley senile. not for serious econ majors.
Stay away from this guy. He is bad news. I never got below a B+ on his first two exams and somehow ended up getting a C+ even with the curve. Just take a professor that requires work so you can actually learn the material.
He's a sweet old man but really does not know how to teach. Will explain the same thing in class for weeks and it won't even be on the test. When we get our test back we spend the whole class telling him all the mistakes he made and he has to change our grades. If you do take him try not to laugh we he takes attendance 20 minutes into the class.
Had a stroke a few years ago which apparently messed him up. He has 2 tests worth 25% each and a final worth 50%. Has a ridiculous curve that makes it near impossible to get below a C.
I feel really bad 4 this guy-He has no idea how to teach and is too old to be doing it. The curve is rediculous, but he doesnt explain anything so unless u have previous knowledge of econ ur screwed. He is a nice old man with a lisp, a Boston accent, but there is absolutely no point in going to the class. You come out of class wishing u didnt go
if you have never taken an econ class before..do not take him!he teaches the same thing over and over again and then expects you to know everything else on the test even though he has not talked about it at all.2 tests..25% each and final is 50% of your grade. stay away from him if you want to learn anything.
Caring and smart. He is always willing to help. You can see his passion for his work!
This is an elderly man who does not care about his students-doesn't answer emails, very difficult to catch outside of class. Exams are difficult-you really need to know your facts and only 20% is taken from the book. He only uses powerpoint presentations which are available online and rambles. You will not learn much with him-complete waste of time
The most boring class of my life! It was a 50 min MWF and I swear it went on for 4 hours. He's a silly man, but there is little interaction with the class and even if you are listening he's completely unclear 90% of the time. I would not take another of his classes.
This was without a doubt the easiest class I've taken at Loyola. The lectures are very simple and, at times, dull, but the exams are straight forward and if you read you will do absolutely fine in the class. Attendance is definitely not necessary if you keep up with reading and take a crack at the homework problems he assigns from the book.
Vanderporten is a sweet old man, but an awful teacher. I would be disapointed, but not surprised if he was still a professor at LUC next year. The class is easy and you only have to go on test days (going to class does not help you on the test). The curve is ridiculously awesome! I got Bs on the fisrt 2 tests but with the curve they were both As.
Like everyone else is saying- this dude is OLD (he really is brilliant tho, but you'd never guess it by looking at him). Class is dry and hard to sit through. The curve is the best part. I averaged about a 77% and he gave me the B+! attendance is not mandatory. I wound up teaching myself the material the two nights before the test...all 77% of it.
BRUCE IS AWESOME
Vanderporten is so nice. PLEASE, just go to class. If you go to class everyday you will not receive anything lower than a B. Even if his lectures are sometimes unclear, nothing is on the exam that is not in the lectures. I didn't buy the textbook and I still did well on the exams from his lecture notes.
Vanderporten is growing more senile by the day. He does not make it clear what material is covered on the exams (there are only two, by the way, plus the final) He goes over his powerpoints without lowering the screens, turns the lights on and off, mumbles, gets lost in his own thoughts, forgets what he talked about two days before, repeats the sa
He is becoming more senile by the day. He does like to curve things quite a bit. He takes attendance every once in a while, but only for half the class and just assumes the rest are in attendance. If you have some background in Econ and feel you can teach yourself I would recommend it.
Not the greatest professor in the world, but not nearly the worst. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he'll throw out bonus points to people that are there on a given day. He also decided to change the date of one of the midterms to be a week earlier without any prior warning. Good news is that he puts a huge curve on the 2 midterms and final.
He is really hard to hear most of the time cause he is always mumbling I think hes like german or something but the class is only based off of 3 tests (2 midterms and a final) 25/25/50% You will NEED to read and teach some things to yourself but it is possible to get a A in his class .. ur choice
A sweet old man, but he no longer knows how to teach. He mumbles incoherently and doesn't explain anything. You must teach yourself from the book. His tests are very difficult, but he does curve them. There's not too much work, but DO NOT take him if you can help it.
Bruce is a great guy. VERY SLOW, mumbles, and scatterbrained. Only saving grace in this class is that attendance isn't mandatory, tests are curved immensely, and the book he chooses is an easy read. If you have any small background in economics I suggest taking him and just reading the book, you can do well!
... I WOULD NOT TAKE HIM. HE IS SOMEWHAT FUNNY. HE DOES CURVE A LOT! BUT HE DOES NOT TEACH. MIGHT AS WELL SAVE THE TRIP TO WTC AND READ THE BOOK. 2 TESTS AND A FINAL. HE IS HARD TO HEAR AND MUMBLES. BUT NONETHELESS, A NICE OLD MAN.
A nice guy even if he can't remember anyone's name. Attendance doesn't count (or so he claims) but he does take it for extra credit sometimes.
Wow, what a waste of money. Find a real econ prof. if you want to learn anything. This guy shouldn't be teaching anymore.
He needs to retire! He doesn't teach the material you need to know for the tests, he just babbles about nothing. Two tests and a final which is worth 50% of your grade. He is impossible to get help from, but if you know economics take this as an easy class I guess..
Ok, the people below clearly never showed up to class or didnt pay attention once they showed up! NOT gonna lie, its pretty hard to pay attention. He can be pretty boring! He'll remind you of a grandfather of some sorts. But its an easy A! As hard as it is to stay awake, do it, take notes, and you will do well on exams! The final worth 50% sucked!
I'm a Finance major, and as much as I despise him, I'm taking him again for Macro. Truth be told, he can't teach if his life depended on it, but he's easy (his tests are based only off the material he discusses). if you go to class, it's an easy A. Don't buy the $100 textbook, just Google all concepts you need to know
I am really thankful for this class and this professor. He is smart and knows what he is talking about, especially when you ask questions. He's a little old but he is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. It isn't always necessary to go to class because he teaches straight from the textbook. Overall, you learn as much as you put into it.
Don't buy the newest edition of the text book - the book really isn't even necessary. Attendance is not mandatory either. I took him for both 201 and 202 this semester and came out with A's in both. Easy teacher, but he should definitely retire soon... class is hard to stay awake through
Nice old man. Obviously knows what he's talking about, but sometimes he confuses things more than he clarifies. 3 exams. A bit challenging, but not impossible. Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended because a number of his examples and explanations were helpful. Recommended for those who aren't econ geniuses.
He is older and does ramble a bit, but he is a smart man and knows what he is talking about. Try to sit closer because he sometimes talks confusingly and quietly. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's a good idea; he says a lot of things that have nothing to do with class. Test are incredibly easy and the curve is massive. A 40% is a C- basically.
Bruce is a a very nice old man. The only problem is that he cannot teach clearly. Two midterms worth 25% and Final is worth 50%. You don't need to show up. Read the book carefully and know your stuff.
I should have listened and stayed away. This man is ridiculous. Two tests and a final that is 50% of your grade. He is scatter-brained and cannot teach concepts clearly at all. He is useless when it comes to answering e-mails because he just doesn't respond. Avoid him unless you are good at econ and understand it, otherwise you will get a bad grade
Vanderporten is a very nice and funny old man....but it ends there. He should NOT be teaching. His lectures make no sense and even when you ask questions, his explanations are even more confusing. The tests are difficult, even if you complete the study guides thoroughly. Loyola, kindly suggest to Vanderporten that it's time to move on.
Vanderporten is an adorable old man who obviously loves to teach. His teaching sometimes suffers due to distractions. But he is exteremely helpful otherwise.
His lectures are a bit repetitive, but if you come to class most of the time, you'll do great on his tests. They're all multiple choice and his curves are super high.
If you have previous knowledge of Economics, this class will be a breeze. Professor Vanderporten tells you exactly what you will be tested on.
A very cute old man, but not a great teacher. Lectures are confusing and he gets easily distracted. Even when you go to class all the time, the tests are a lot harder than things discussed in lecture. Luckily, he curves the tests, but it is not an easy class, especially when the teacher doesn't explain things well.
Hopefully by the time you read this, Mr. Vanderporten will be retired. He is a very nice man and he definitely knows his stuff, but he is simply not a very good teacher. He gets distracted very easily and it is never entirely clear what the exams will be on. I recommend looking elsewhere for an Econ professor
This is a good class for some quality time with Facebook. Bruce is a very smart, cute old man, unfortunately he cannot teach. His lectures are random rambles, but his tests are out of the book. They are fairly easy and are heavily curved.
No homework - two exams and final. Doesn't convey the information well so be prepared to teach yourself. Confuses himself when he writes information on the board so I have to double check everything with the book. He obviously knows his stuff and he's a nice guy but it's long past time for him to retire. Avoid him if you can.
GAH! Not a good professor! His lectures are very inadequate. You will have to teach yourself most of the material. He's nice and humble, but it's easy to fall asleep in class. He speaks really slowly and covers little material in a class. Because of this, exams are insanely easy. Need good grade, take him. Econ major, HE WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY!!!!!!!
Get ready to teach yourself. He painfully lectures all the time and confuses himself. His tests are heavily curved and easy, but you will not get much out of the course. If you need an easy A, take him, but if you want to learn about economics, and not from yourself, avoid him at all costs.
