one of the greatest professors I have ever had!! Kept everyone engaged in the topic!
AWESOME!!!!
Lectures are easy to follow, but complicated topics are not covered dynamically so they can be universally applied. Head TF is not a very good teacher. During exam preps, head TF loves to place great emphasis on material that is NOT covered on the exam while not covering more complex topics that are worthy of review. Proceed with caution.
Generally great lectures. I would recommend you buy the text book(s) despite any suggestion from Bruce that they are "completely optional". They are not. I actually think the head TA is quite helpful.
Great Professor... Excellent lectures... Clarity is, to my opinion, one of his best qualities...
Bruce is a very witty guy, great sense of humor. I loved the teaching. Clear material, engaging. Do not buy the books, use Internet. Almost all you need you get in class. Loved it.
Excellent professor. I primarily did the class at a distance but also attended several classes when I was in Boston, and I can't say enough about his clarity and enthusiasm. He's very approachable & the topics are excellent and highly applicable to real life. Changed my view of the financial world. Challenging exams, but manageable & so worth it.
Brilliant professor. One of the best I've ever had.
Painfully repetitive. Very unclear expectations. T.A's were very poor and inconsistent. Would recommend staying away.
He is extremely meticulous and clearly enjoys teaching
Our semester here in the summer is coming to a close. He is an incredible professor. He teaches material that would otherwise be a little dull, but he brings quite a bit of excitement to the material. Truly a gifted professor. The TAs in the class were incredible as well. Honestly, the professor and his team truly want you to excel in this class.
Love this guy, also took FINC E-100 with him. I agree, TAs this semester have been very poor. As if we couldn't tell, she reminds us explicitly that she is unfamiliar with the material.
Principles of Finance. The Prof was very thorough, and explained the required topics clearly and to the point. I highly recommend this class, just make sure to focus on the class material and not on the text book. It's only there for reference, even if that.
Amazing professor!
Excellent lecturer. Took the class online and watched the videos. Couldn't be much better
One of the best lecturers there is.
Exceptional teaching style, great slides, no need to buy a textbook! Problem sets are hard & require a lot of work! Midterm was tough but was rated on the curve. Make sure to go over 1st lectures for final! Ours included first 4 lectures only.Professor's go a great sense of humor.Very tough class, but you'll learn a lot and they grade very fairly.
Great lecturer!
I'm not very interested in Finance, but professor Watson makes any course just brilliant. I'm also happy to see that now he drinks water instead coke and walks during the class. I think that such a brilliant mind deserves to be healthy, too.
By far is the best professor I have seen so far. Highly recommend him and his classes to anyone who is interested in economics/finance. Well respected by students and strongly feel the school should look for more great professors like this one! Because trust me they are not all this great, far from it! Definitively need more like him.
Dr. Watson is perhaps the best professor at Harvard to teach a complicated subject like Microeconomics in a "layman's" language. He is clear, concise, takes time to make sure students understand and his lecture notes are awesome. No textbook in the world teaches concepts this clearly. Highly recommend him!
exceptional , committed and engaging. His courses are always good
This was a great class. Prof. Watson did a great job explaining everything.
Easy to understand. Answers all questions. Great Professor!!!
Great class. very clear. took class distance and TA's were great. highly recommend.
One of the best at Harvard. Super prof with excellent TA's. E10a is a lot of work as it covers both principles of micro & macro in one semester, but Bruce gives you everything you need to do well.
Dr Watson is Awesome, Solve the problem sets and you will be fine in the paper.. Dr Watson makes concepts easy to understand and I have learned ALOT in his class.. Thanks Dr Watson.
Absolutely horrible! This guy does not care about anything but a paycheck! Try to email a question, see how many times you have to follow up to get a response. He has no control over his TA. Avoid this professor!
Excellent professor. Challenging lectures and homework. Excellent TA support. Enjoyed the learning process. Take the course from this man.
I would not recommend taking this class in the summer. The TA's run the class, and they also curve every exam and a lot of the homework questions are " all or nothing" so if you miss one part of the problems you automatically receive 0 points. Definitely would not recommend this class for someone with a job in the summer or other obligations.
Bruce is an excellent teacher, but the problem sets are challenging & tend to require an advanced knowledge of micro. The problem sets are much more difficult than what's discussed in class. Instead of reinforcing the material covered in class they require an advanced understanding of the concepts. I have a BA in Econ & found the course frustrating
Bruce is one of the best in teaching an online option course. He restates classroom questions for online students so that you are not lost. The TA's work hard to give you all of the info. The problem sets are challenging and time consuming since the answers require you to go beyond the question. The curve looks easy on paper, but it is difficult.
Amazing.
Bruce is one of the best I've had! His lectures are clear and understandable and he uses plenty of examples to further clarify difficult topics. Despite it being a giant class, he treats it like you are the only student in class, knows you by name and carefully answers all questions. His TAs are awesome as well and hold office hours for 1 on 1 help
Knows his material, but lectures do not cover everything you need to know to do the problem sets. Sections are a must,so additional time commitment is necessary. Great TAs, but I think it says something about the professor that it takes the TA two hours to explain a two-hour lecture. Overall, not impressed.
Don't even bother to attend in class unless you suffer from sleep deprivation. His TA's help a lot if you don't understand the material. Just be prepare to spend 10 hours a week on homework and reading course materials.
Awesome class! Really enjoyed it
He was really difficult to deal with and only seemed able to reply to emails at the end when he wanted a good review and to push his other class...
Oh goodness... I took the basic econ class last summer and was so lost throughout :/ My TAs were useless (took the course through summer program at Harvard) and the material in class was NOT the material in the exam. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Mr. Watson is the man. He is a great teacher who loves the material and is very straight forward in his expectations. The exams are trick free and are based directly off of what you have already done in the homework sets. This is a must take econ class.
Great communicator, makes things easy although he flew through some of the subjects.
Great professor! Would highly recommend him.
This was the 2nd class I took with Prof. Watson and I have to say it was a little bit of a disappointment. I took before Pples of Finance and now I took Microeconomics and I did not like it as much. The homework system, which our class piloted, was not really good. mid term and final were toughish. did not get enough real life examples. :(
This was a unnecessarily difficult course- the problem sets each week were stupidly difficult and often didn't match material...I studied constantly (15+ hours/week)the exams were insanely hard- I got a 46 & 58 on the exams but due to the bell curve got a B- if that says anything...I think Mr Watson is very smart guy, but the course was horrible.
HES Sprg'14. Watson was engaging & knowledgeable. Sadly, Watson let his TA run the show. TA takes a week to answer email & used 4 hours each week in section meetings to joke and regurgitate Watson's lectures. I dont recall TA ever starting section on time. Watson's lectures & TA sections covered 50% of what I needed to excel on exams & homework.
Prof. Watson is a great human being. He is funny, down to earth and intelligent. He is very easy to follow and makes sure no student is left behind. His teaching assistants also rock and I would strongly, strongly recommend taking Prof. Watson's courses.
Professor Bruce Watson is an amazing lecturer. He is knowledgeable, humorous and approachable. I highly recommend taking his classes.
I chose this course, specifically, because of the teaching staff. However, this semester didn't come close to meeting my expectations. Sections were lacking in content, repetitive, and disappointing. Numerous emails, not just my own, were answered way late or not at all. I'm not sure if this is typical or not, but maybe proceed with caution.
The lectures did not align closely enough with the reading, homework, and exams so what should have been a 5-10 hrswk course ended up taking 15-20 hrswk. Also, homework, sections, & exams are ALL online. The online programs used were subpar and finicky, so it was frustrating to spend so much time online for a class I chose to take on campus.
Great class. You can view the lectures and group sessions at your own pace. Very convenient and well organized.
A fabulous teacher, with excellent TAs. He made difficult concepts very easy and the grading of his Problem Sets and exams was fair, transparent and swift. This is a great Professor teaching a very interesting class, a must-take for all HES Management or Finance students.
Professor Watson is clear and very intelligent. He teaches very easy-to-understand lectures and you can tell that he has a lot of expertise about finance. You will both be able to pass the class and learn a lot of material. The class is so well structured that you will need no information from a textbook because he explains it all amazingly well.
He tells you the big picture, so it help you understand the fundamentals. He does not go directly into the details.
I took the summer course which was pretty fast paced. Overall the Question sets and the mid-term were straight forward. If you studied the PowerPoint slides, you should do relatively well. The final however was very difficult. The questions did not reflect the question sets, mid-term or the PowerPoint presentations as they were more difficult.
If you watch the lectures and do the homework you'll be fine. The book is not necessary. The teaching assistant sections were extremely helpful when I got stuck. This was a fair and reasonable class and I learned a lot.
He understands the subject and knows how to pass the knowledge across. He speaks clearly and at a pace that enables you to take perfect notes the first time you listen to the lecture. His TA's are marvelous and help to reiterate what he has taught in a different way, making it ingrained in your memory. I will take any class he teaches
Great professor. Classes were recorded but you could attend in person. His slides are very good. 8 quizzes in 12 weeks and 2 big tests. Can be aleepy sometimes. You better know SOME finance before taking the class otherwise it will get hard quickly.
Excellent lecturers - All the basic of Macro and Micro in one term but that is a lot of ground to cover and as a consequence they go fast. So be prepared to attend or review recordings of Sections and do some background reading. Grading is on a curve but is generous so as long as you put effort in you will do well.
I found this course to be completely misleading and was disappointed in my results. I found the lectures and TA sessions to be completely different in content than the testing and problem sets. I struggled to understand how to relate the lecture material and textbook readings to them. I would caution anybody considering this course.
His lectures were great but they did not match up with the graded material. A lot of extra worth has to be put in including a lot of google searches to find the answer.
This class was ridiculous. Prof. Watson doesn't teach, he lets his TA's do all the work. Material is really difficult and so are the tests. You'll barely pass by googling the answers. He applies "a generous curve" to the final grade, yeah because more than half of your students would'nt pass without it.
I'm just glad it was graded on a bell curve. Material was interesting, but he totally did not give me a skill to take away. My knowledge is vague, and I'd need to learn this correctly if I were to go into the finance field. He has a lot of knowledge, but I feel he should give us clearer material and reasonable length written material.
How hard this course is will depend on your familiarity with finance and how well you remember algebra. However, even though this course was hard, I really liked Prof. Watson and his style of teaching. You need to work hard, pay attention, study, attend lecture and section meetings. I feel like I learned a lot but this course is a lot of work.
Although professor Watson is a gifted lecturer I felt like he was phoning it in this class. Getting an A in this class is very difficult because of his grading scale which makes collaboration difficult. You can essentially get a B+ with a 90. What really got on my nerves was when we were quizzed on a subject he neglected to teach us one week.
Lectures: Slides are available day after lecture. Boring at times. The slides could be more concise & formatted better. I stopped going to class since I can rewind and take notes with slides the next day. Problem sets: Can be difficult. You have to figure out some things yourself. Exams: Online exams. Straightforward, just study your problem sets.
This class is for people with experience in economics. Exams are 75 question in 90 minutes so you have to do each in 1 min 20 sec average. No time to think. Wouldn't recommend it without prior exposure to econ.
Great Professor. Keeps class interesting with real world examples. This professor does not require the student to purchase the textbook. His powerpoint presentations are clear and concise. Highly recommend taking a class with Professor Watson.
Ridiculous exam standards and horrible grading concept instruction quality is not in line with the difficult exams this professor gives stay away
I've taken 2 of Prof. Watson's classes and enjoyed both of them. He's highly knowledgeable in finance and economics, which can lead to his classes being more difficult, because he has so much to share. His lectures are well organized, so if you listen closely and are diligent with your note taking, the course should be enjoyable and easy to pass.
Professor Watson is a good lecturer - but my reason for giving him an average grade is because he has an extremely strict grading curve, and it is predetermined that a portion of the class will not score high enough to earn a B so the course counts for admissions. Even though I worked harder than ever, I only earned a C in this class due to his
ur great
I've taken 4 classes with Bruce Watson and am actively looking to do more. He knows his subject matter and is able to explain it simply and clearly - and memorably! He wants you to understand it. I've learned more from Bruce Watson than I have from my other lecturers.
He is a very nice prof. I provides all the things which will make you to excel in class
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! His lectures gives you a brief overview. The TAs do more teaching so get ready for class 6 days a week. Tests are awful. You get minute to answer the questions which doesnt give you enough time to answer, let alone thoroughly read or think about them. Worst class I have ever taken!!! Still got a B but just terrible.
Awfull class. There a huge disconnect between the recorded lectures and whats tested. This class should have been much easer to understand if the tests reasonably related to the lectures. The TA had too many technical issues too which were unacceptable. Poorly administered. Harvard should re-evaluate how this class is structured and delivered.
Bruce is well organized. Grading policy is fair and laid out clearly. Lectures and slides cover the material generally, but you really have to attend one or more of the 2-hr TA sessions each week if you want to get a more in depth understanding of the material, see some worked examples, etc. The two TAs were extremely helpful. I would take again
I would take this professor again. I like his style and find him to be extremely credible. I thought the homework modules and midterm were easy to complete from the lectures alone, but for the final you need to attend a TA session or two. I got an A- and joined two TA sessions.
One of my favourite professors of all time
Bruce Watsons lectures have allowed me to accurately predict the Feds moves on the stock market and enabled me to make thousands of dollars from that skill. Recommended
Massive disconnect between what was taught and what was tested on. The professor gives a very general overview of the material and then essentially expects you to figure out the rest. The TA sections were annoying at best. Professor cancelled classes. TAs cancelled quite a few sections under circumstances, "that will one day be funny".
I felt badly for Watson because he was ill most of the semester. We only had class four times, so he re-posted lectures from last year. Huge disconnect between what's taught in lecture/assigned for homework and tests. Extremely difficult exams even if you think you understand the material... Going to the extra TA sections didn't really help...
Hard course, did well on my assignments but not my final exams, final exams are very hard and are all written not multiple choice, hard to finish the exams on time
I took Principles of Finance online during the 7-week summer session. Dr. Watson was very clear in his presentation and I enjoyed how well he interacted with the students in the classroom. Grading was tough, but the expectations were clear. I got a good grade, but I had to work very hard for it.
More concerned with finding the next math savant than teaching. Only gives one third of the tools needed to do the homework and tests. Leaves the TF's to teach most things in separate after-class sessions. Half the class withdrew ($0 returned) just before the final, curve disappeared. Overly complicates everything. Nice guy, poor teacher.
For a theory class it was all math and "hide the ball" solving math problems. Watch lectures tapes at 2x speed, very little needed there. Must attend TF sessions, they're the real teachers. Only interested in generating a grade distribution, not teaching. Narrow range of learning, mostly grunt work math problems he tries to mystify. Disappointing.
Excellent Professor, I've taken 3 classes with Bruce and this is by far the best of them. Many of his other courses are aligned with Pearson Econ textbooks while this course is customized and created by him. The difference is huge as the tests and assignments actually correlate well with the lectures.
Great introductory finance course. Looking forward to taking some of his other courses for the Harvard Extension Finance ALM
Bruce Watson is a great instructor. He gives clear instructions and his power point slides are very well organized. The problem sets align with the midterm and final. There is no excuse not to get a good grade in his class. His TAs are very dedicated. I highly recommend taking him!
Not a fan of his teaching style. Uses repeat materials and is not available outside of lectures for any support or response.
yeah this class was garbage bad teacher
Disconnect between lectures & Problem Sets (Sometimes). I've traded stock and options for 18 years. Bruce knows his material, but at times he (or his TA) can present it in a confusing or inappropriately. Some of the stock option solutions being presented by the TA's was confusing or wrong; felt like common core math at times. Expects a lot on exams
Watson is great, final exam heavy.
One of my favorite professors. The class structure allows so much opportunity for questions and understanding. TAs offer weekly review classes to make the problem sets less stressful.
I put off taking microeconomics forever while doing my masters. While I am still not wild on the topic, Bruce and his TA were incredibly friendly, caring, and clear. I find the topics tough... still. But these two were a dynamic duo. They're great and made something I dreaded incredibly manageable. Strong, strong recommend if you need to take.
Professor Watson is the NICEST professor I've ever taken classes from. His lectures are thorough and easy to understand. He truly cares about each and every student. Cannot recommend him enough!
Nice person, helpful TA, but antiquated. They are stuck in their ways, not covering relevant info. Your quizzes are straight from the Pearson database; they don't cover the material at all. Oh yeah, and the test, it's horrible, even if you study, you will be stuck, there is no way to make an A. Will not test on the material covered in the class!
Hes lit
Prof. Watson explains complex finance concepts in easily understandable manner. I enjoyed his lectures. His TA who hosts Sections is amazing. The TA made this course much more interactive and engaging. Grade is heavily based on the Final, therefore in order to get A/A-, you will have to be a good test taker. I would take his course again.
Bruce Watson is an excellent professor. His class is extremely well organized and he is crystal clear teaching the material. The tests are open-book, but this method is not too helpful as there are lots of calculations required in the exams. He has an awesome TA named Rob. This course is an excellent introduction to Finance. I highly recommend it.
The lecture videos were great, however, the professor never had interaction with students which is inexcusable. This should be forbidden at expensive universities. Interaction matters. The hard-working TA taught the class. The final exam was not allowed to be reviewed but counted for 40% of the grade. Miss class / TA sessions - you will do poorly.
Honestly, an awesome professor. he knows his stuff. he has some of the easiest/fairest grading policies. Just do the work and you'll do well.
The worst class that I have taken ever. While I have sympathy that the professor had been sick for 10/12 of the term, the educational quality was terrible. We watched lectures that dated back 2-3 years and the TA's sessions had no relation to the final/midterm- mismatched material. 5 of the graded HW was handed back to us 4 days b4 the final.
I've taken professor Watson for 3 courses at Harvard Extension School, MGMT 2000, MGMT 2700, and Econ E-10a, which I just finished. It was a lot to learn for a noobie like me, but I got a lot out of it for introductory courses. I think a lot of disgruntled wimps post. One A minus and 2 B plusses I am not complaining. I worked for it.
The one downside is lectures were prerecorded and the professor never held office hours. So I never met our professor! Otherwise, very positive course! You will learn a ton from amazing lectures while working very little for an easy A.
Prof Watson is great at explaining the concepts of this course, and his lectures are both interesting and rewarding. The TA Rob does a wonderful job at holding structured sections, you can ask him any kind of questions and he'll happily answer them for you. The grading criteria are very clear, and the exams are quite easy. Definitely recommend.
Grade is heavily relied on the final. I did exceptionally well on the homeworks and midterm, however must have done poorly on the final to have my grade drop an entire letter grade. Asked TAs and Professor what my final exam grade was, no response. Lectures were pre-recorded from years ago, only live session you get would be with the TAs.
This was a Harvard Extension Course taught by Bruce Watson. I have taken about 10 courses and this by far was just the worst EVER. I had to take it for my Masters but he is boring and these are old lectures. Harvard should be embarrass by this class. A joke and the grading is messed up. BAD CLASS stay away.
Prof and TA are both deeply knowledgeable about finance, very good at fielding questions. The expectations are clear, consistent. Exams, problem sets, etc are straight forward. Prof makes every effort possible to ensure students understand, is constantly ensuring students are engaged in class. The TA session attendance is consistently high.
This is a pre-recorded course, but there was great support from the TA, Rob. The curriculum is a superficial review of the finance system, and wasn't too technical.
Numerous times, this professor made it clear that the content of the assessments would come from the lectures, which wasn't true. Questions were purposely obtuse, and answers often only changed one word. If you are a gifted independent learner who already knows a bulk of the subject matter, it's still not enough to get a decent grade.
Great professor took this class online through Harvard summer extension really made me passionate about economics
Bruce is the GOAT! I've now taken two classes with him and he is so good at making the material accessible and interesting. If you're interested in economics or finance but worried that it will be dry or intimidating, take them with Bruce. He's so patient with questions and seems to genuinely like students.
Professor Bruce knows his stuff and makes the material really engaging. Definitely use unstuck ai in addition to the textbook - it really helped me prepare for the challenging but fair assessments. Overall, a great class to take.
Great interpersonal skills, able to balance heavy workload/long lectures with humour. Overall, he organised an amazing course. Would HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend!!!!!!!!!!!!
The professor relies heavily on the TA and the TA's materials for the homework. I don't think it's fair to expect the students to reach out and ask for "assumptions" in able to complete homework questions. If there are assumptions, they should be made clear in the questions.
