grades too hard, tests are hard, keeps you till last possible minute
tests are not off review sheet and too hard, too boring
Never take him . horrible teacher
Only if you want to learn
Tests go according to handout sheet, but every detail important
Awesome, it's a lot of work but if you like history you learn a lot. Pay attention to handouts and talk to him after class, he likes that.

Very knowledgable teacher! However, he's hard to follow because every detail is so important! Hard tests, and grades hard on papers! But very nice!
He talks about nothing constantly. Nothing he talked about was on the exam and he grades horribly. Lectures are too long and not to the point. Don't take him.
He is horrible. He expects way too much from a 100 level class. He grades hard, and expects a lot of dates and specifics on a topic that you are not prepared for (essays 5 pages long) plus you have to read a couple of books and do a couple of essays.
A History Major's DREAM!Cute old man!VERY knowledgeable when it comes to history!Though, lectures r incredibly long, every detail is important in lecture...u have to record the lectures, and play them back later!Dont bother reading, it wont help!
Terribly demanding. Expect tests to be graded harshly and very subjectively. He only likes essays that arrives at HIS conclusions. Demands 2-3 essays in MLA standards. Much to demanding for a 100 level course. Expect your GPA to drop.
not specific AT ALL what to study for tests, lectures the whole entire time with NO break, very long-winded... take someone else!
very hard teacher for a 100 level class. not recommended. grades everything very difficultly. nice guy, but in a 4 hour class he'll keep you late and he talks forever about stuff that isn't even on the tests!!!!
Hard class but not the hardest. If you have a mature writing style and are wililng to avoid your own opinions and regurgitate his you'll be fine. Reading won't help, just wait for the review sheets, fill them out in detail and memorize what you can.
Take your history at the community college. I regret taking this teacher.
Be prepared to do your homework. He is great and easy if you just pay attention and study. Lots of chance for makeup on tests w/ papers and extra credit for attendence and an optional paper. I got a 4.0 hes great! Just suck up & pretend interested.
Do yourself a favor and don't take this teacher. Especially for a 3 hour long night class. He's very monotone and boring.
Good lecturer, but talks way to much. He always keeps you all the way, and don't read the books, there's no point, just wait for the review sheets for the tests and memorize. His grading on essays is annoying, it's like you can never get it right.
Very into teaching, teaches thematically which will help you on your exams/essays. requires far too much for a 100 level class. Two essays about books, then m/c, 4 mini essays, and one huge essay for exams, but you get a review list and essays early.
Graded essays more for technique and whether or not you interpreted the books the same as him. Not a good 100 level class for those not through the rhetoric classes yet.
This rotten son of a **** stinks. Interesting class, but this guy hates you in a sneaky kind of way. Hope you're a HST 114 professor, because he's got some high expectations.
He was soooo boring...he took attendance (which if you missed to many times you were graded down for). He would keep you till the last second and sometimes more.
Will keep you past the end of class time- after 10pm! If you don't participate & kiss his a$$, he will really d*ck you over. You'll write about 10 pages for exams-all essays. Better know MLA for the paper- will mark down for everything that isn't perfect.
Excellent teacher. His lectures are long, but there is a lot of information in these classes to get through. He adds a lot of interesting anecdotes that aren’t in the books. His papers require a lot of work, but if you read the books they aren’t too ba
Zellers lectures are really interesting. I looked forward to them. Tests are difficult but study guides are helpful. Zellers is always available and helpful during office hours. He is willing to discuss and explain any questions.
varry good teacher will help you on any thing you need.
Good professor, just a hard grader on the writing...and that is what the exams and assignments are. Smart guy though with interesting facts, just a long class.
I had him from 6:30-9:50 once a week, which was awful. He NEVER lets you out early, and you sit there and take notes for 3 and a half hours. Nice guy, but kinda weird, in a Hannibal Lecter sort of way... odd... wouldn't recommend this class because you will sleep.
horrible teacher! grades like he is teaching grad students when it's an intro class!! needs to ease up!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
Looked like Elton John. Sounded like Ned Flanders. A LONG 3 hours and 20 minutes. Took attendance at 9:45pm. Not fun.
The real title of this class should be "what you will never know, but wish you did about MLA". I found this class very difficult and I have an interest in history and actually read about it for enjoyment. Find another professor.
Very hard for an intro level course. Grading is very difficult, but if you can commit to going to every class and read the books, you will do well. It was way to much work for what I took out of the class. Probably would take a graduate level course from him, but nothing else.
The worst professor I've ever had (I'm 8 credits from my second degree). Surveyed fellow class mates, found on avg. they recieved grades ~1.7 below thier gpa. despite great success in 300 level courses, his intro level course was killing thier semester gpa- advise avoiding -he also "lost" my work

It was a challenging class, that is in taking TONS of notes and memorizing at least a paragraph for each topic/concept. The tests were difficult.I had plenty of time to study since I don't have a job and only took 2 classes in fall when I had this teacher. Overall, difficult and challenging class, but can be workable if u REALLY commit to studying
This is a difficult class, but he was a good teacher. You have to read ALOT and write ALOT, but he loves his job and he is good at history! If you sit in the front and stay involved with him, youll learn to like him! P.S. He takes attendace at the very end of class so dont leave early!
this class was very difficult! the teacher was unhelpful! overall this whole experience this semester was a complete waste of time! i would definitely NOT recommend this teacher to anyone!!
I would not recommend this teacher AT ALL. He keeps you in class until the very end. Very hard grader. Lectures are very boring, if you read and know the topics for the test you dont need his talking and he takes attendence at the END OF CLASS. Everyone sleeps and one girl was filing her nails.
Usually I love history classes, but this prof put me to sleep. He really knows his stuff, but he's really hard for an intro course. He likes to pretend he's an english prof. too, so he grades really hard on essays. I got a 4.0 in rhetoric and got C's on his essays. Avoid this prof unless you want to stay till the last second of class and get a 2.0.
I love Bruce Zellers! He is a very hard grader on papers, but he demands nothing but the best from his students. He passed out a study guide and whatever was on the study guide was on the test. Whenever I had a question about anything he answered it. He took personal time answering my questions and he was happy to do so.
Great professor. Class was interesting all the way through, and he is clearly enamored with the subject matter. First history class that has held my attention EVER. Super nice guy too. Grades hard and there is a lot of work, but I got a lot out of it. If you take this class, it will definitely be worth the tuition money.
ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz. u will go to sleep in his class. he takes attendance so u have to go (but gives extra credit for going more than 90% of the time). he grades like an english prof--and exams are all essays basically. u dont really need to pay attention to the lectures-just study the study guides for the tests and u will be fine.
Bruce Zellers is the most brilliant, articulate, passionate professor I have ever had. His one class has taught me more than just history. He's incredible--plain and simple.
Professor Zellers is a great teacher! If you actually attend class you will do great in the class. He lets you Email your papers early to him so he can revise them and help make them better. He gives a study guide for the tests, and even gives you the essay questions in advance. He is very much interested in what he teaches. His lectures ma be a li
Professor is not interested in helping students. Late to hand back tests/essays (3 wks later!). Gave me a WRONG FINAL GRADE (2.5) when my real gpa in that class was well over 3.0. He had mistakenly given me a zero for a paper that I had turned in months ago; good thing I didn't throw it away! Needless to say, I wish I hadn't taken his class.
Very passionate teacher. His lectures although long at times are very interesting and it is clear he knows what he is talking about. Tests are challenging but fair as long as you use the study guides. Papers are a challenge, he grades harder then my Rhetoric teacher...but it's still plausible to get a good grade. He is a very cool guy.
Mr. Zellers is a terrible teacher. His lectures are painfully boring and pointless. The books he makes you read are dry. He also called me out in class once and told me to put my laptop away when 5 other people had theirs open on their desk. He assumed I was "shopping" (?) and embarassed me in front of the whole class. Can't stand him...
This class SUCKED! Do not take him. This is an introductory history class that he teaches as if you are studying for your Masters or Ph.D in history. He'll give you a study guide with 50-60 terms and expect you to write a lengthy paragraph on 4 of the term in great detail, four that are not identified until test day. He grades very hard. HATED it!
Professor Zellers was a very difficult teacher, he does grade the papers very harshly and his tests are also difficult and require some studying. For an intro course it was very challenging, but his lectures, although very long, are interesting. He knows the subject well but the class seems to just drag on.
Professor Zellers was a very hard teacher. I got an A- but worked hard. He scrutinizes essay papers for content, style & grammar. He expects 80% attendance which is not too much to ask. Attendance will earn or cost you extra points. He is very knowledgeable and his lectures are interesting. He made me work hard but aren't we in college to learn?
Extremely boring teacher, Had him for a night class and would listen to him lecture about history from 630 until about 9 or 915....makes attendance worth points so students dont read ahead and skip class. Grades papers extremely critically and kind of takes the class in his own direction with the whole American Civil Religion Theme....I didnt like
He's a great professor. He knows his stuff. If you want to learn alot hes the one to take. Plan to do the work and come to class. it will pay off.
I took his pre civil war class. Great orator. Challenges you to think. Two exams, two papers. He will read and critique your rough drafts. Exam contents are overwhelming, but actual exam is not that bad. Essay worth 50% of exam. Great class overall, would take again.
He is an extremely harsh grader for an intro level class. His personality is also pretty sour but he is a very smart man. Would NOT take again.
He's a tough grader and tends to take a long time to give grades back, but his lectures were interesting and clarified everything. Grades are based on 2 papers and 2 exams and he takes attendance at the END of every class. Good class, but wouldn't recommend the 6:30-9:50 night class...hard to get through.
Do not do the assigned reading, read only novels assigned for papers, take study guide literal, look up terms, and refer to class notes... He does give great points for attendance. I got 3.5 *Text books available online* Pay attention and take great notes during lecture which are long but oh well.
Great teacher/lecturer. knows his material and is very well prepared for each class.
A very boring teaching to have to listen to, but make sure you take good notes!! The exams are really hard, even with study sheet.
Fantastic, interesting professor! One of my favorites, I took both of his classes.
I love Bruce Zellers. He is an exhilarating teacher and a great person.
Demands hard work. Very interesting lectures, very knowledgable, straightforward exams. He will give you guidance on your written assignments, so no excuse to those complaining that he grades format too harshly! Recommended highly!
very good professor, however, the tests are very hard. study time needed almost eevery day. he gives well rounded notes, but is very boring to listen too.
He was good. If you can write well you should have no problem passing this class. It is a lot of writing though. The grade comes from two exams and two papers all worth 25% of your grade each. The exams include multiple choice, short answer and an essay which he expects to be 5 pages long. However, he offers extra credit papers and for attendance.
Mr. Zellers is a wonderful man. He is VERY intelligent and knows what he is talking about. I will miss his class. As long as you try... you will do fine :)
The BEST lecturer I have had. Keeps class interested. Gives lots of extra credit opportunity. Be sure you are confident in your paper writing before taking class. I would take another class taught by him in a heartbeat.
Great Professor. I loved his lectures and would gladly take another class under his instruction. He is very passionate about what he teaches and manages to keep the class information heavy but still tolerable.
The epitome of college teaching. They should clone this guy.
He gives you an extra 3 points to your grade (2.8=3.1) if you come to every class.. Great lecturer, and a very nice man. You need to READ and COMPREHEND all documents and chapters though.. oh, and make sure your writing skills are up to par. If you try it's an easy A.
He lectures the entire class period, but really tries to make it interesting. He really cares about his students! Be sure your writing skills are excellent. If you study for the exams, REALLY study I mean, you'll do well. I recommend him!
He gives extra credit for attendance and has an extra credit essay so it's possible to boost your grade. He is passionate about history and it shows in his lectures. He gives a study sheet for exams and if you seriously study it, his exams aren't bad. If you aren't familiar with MLA format, you probably shouldn't take him, but otherwise I recommend
This is the worst class anyone can take... He fails 95% of the class..his midterm and final are really hard and has you write a 4 page essay with resources included.. Like really on a final not a 4 page that is rediculous. I don't understand why they don't reevaluate him as a teacher overall.. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!
This professor LOVES histoy. He does not teach well, all he does is lecture and talk. He expects you to already know the material. His exams are very hard. In class you write a 5 pages essay on the topic of his choice, 4 mini essays of his choice, and a 30 multiple choice.
Two 5 page Essays and 2 exams, both worth 25% of your grade. Essays are graded ridiculously hard, expect a B at best (I received lower essay grades than I did in my writing class). He uses MLA format. Essays = 5 pages + Works Cited. Exams: 30 mult. choice, 4 para response (Out of 46/66 total topics) and 4 pg essay. Extra credit essay/attendance
Amazing teacher. Lectures entire period though, make sure you know how to correctly write an MLA essay and make sure you pay attention to his lectures, read the book, and take good notes. Exams are very easy and straightforward. Recommend him for anyone who genuinely loves history.
Think of what you thought a college prof looked like when you were 10 and it's this guy. Difficult class but he's nice and invites plenty of discussion. Do the readings. He does not grade easily and expects you to use quotes on closed-book exams in your essay sections.
He lectures the entire time with no presentation. He doesn't put anything online for reference. He prints out everything and hands out about 10 to 12 paper documents every class which get very hard to organize. Tough grader. I went to him for help because I was struggling and all he told me basically was to work harder. No help whatsoever.
He is a teacher there for his students. Make sure you read your reading before class and the lectures make more sense. You have 2 papers and 2 exams. Gives study guides for exams and you study and organize you will do well on the exams. Ask Questions and prepare to read out loud in class.
Dr. Zellers knows so much about history, it was very inspirational, however, he did not use teaching methods, just talked for 3 hours straight. Going into his lectures didn't help my grade, no homework no learning. I learn by doing things and we just listened and read articles. Read 2 books to write 2 big papers (felt like crying) + 2 exams.
If you want to know about history, Professor Zellers is your man. You will definitely walk away from his class with a deeper understanding of American History; however, you are going to have to do a lot of reading (including all of his handouts) and you are really going to have to pay attention during his lectures. Two 3 page papers and 2 tests.
Professor Zellers was a true college professor. He provides detailed lectures. Expect a midterm exam and a final exam. Don't be surprised if you are assigned two to three papers over the course of the semester that pertains to assigned secondary books. He regularly takes attendance. Don't be afraid to participate in class. Zellers was great!!!!!!!
I took this class one night per week in the evenings. I DO NOT recommend that you do this. The lectures were painfully long and boring. If you can take this class three times per week. We didn't have too much homework. Just a couple papers to write. The information was pretty interesting and Zellers is a good speaker.
Zellers is a really cool guy and so passionate about history. This class was pretty boring but he gave no homework, just 2 papers and 2 exams. You must do well on these to do well in the class because there are no other grades. He gives an extra credit essay and extra credit for perfect attendance.
Zellers gives good lecturers full of information. If you want to know about history he's your guy. However, his grading was very subjective. There was no rubric for the three papers. I would not recommend him.
If you are a visual learner, like me, do NOT take this professor. All he does is lecture, and he does not use a PowerPoint, so you have to take notes by listening very carefully. He also uses four different textbooks for the class, which I found unnecessary and obnoxious.
Long lectures, though he may say he'll let you out early. Covers plenty, but not all necessary. Grading standards are very vague for papers and exams. 1 extra credit paper for +.4 for final gpa in class if you do well, and another +.2 if you go to every class. I'd take him to listen to lectures, but not for his grading criteria.
Very passionate. Old school lecturer for 3 hours with no powerpoints or visuals. Lectures are interesting though. Im not a fan of history but I enjoyed his class. Grade is based on two papers and two exams with an extra credit paper. Attendance isnt mandatory, but if you go to every class you get 0.2 added to your GPA at the end of the semester.
Professor Zellers is extremely passionate about history, he knows a lot but he is VERY lecture heavy. He spends an entire 4-hour class standing at the front of the class talking, it gets very boring and he talks too fast to take detailed notes. His grading consists of 2 tests and 2 papers; the tests have a full essay and 4 mini essays on them.
If you like lectures take this class, if not don't. He only has four things that are graded, two papers and two exams. You get extra credit if you write an extra paper and show up to class every day. He does take attendance, but it is not marked against you.
I am a psychology student and really enjoyed this class on American history. I finished with what I would consider a pretty easy A. just put in the effort to study, write the papers, and participate. I would actually take another class from him. He gives out a study guide before exams, know each definition but spend the most time on essay question
This class is only taught through lectures. I had this class once a week for 3 hours. However, he did let us out early every week but the class is so boring. You are only graded on a four things.. midterm, final, and 2 essays. He is so nice and kind but the class is just too boring to sit through.
I had Zellers for a night class on early American history. He was an incredible lecturer. He was able to make the events come alive and made analyzing the situations and people easy and fun. Not a class for an easy A or to just float through.
I would die for Mr. Zellers. He is the best
