Nice guy , cant really understand what hes talking about. Very clueless at times
Shows favortism..which is not fair, but easy grader though/
Because this is a fourth year class, much of the learning is expected by the student. He is a good teacher and as long as you understand what he goes over in class, it is an A at the end.
The accent makes things difficult sometimes, but the labs are group reports, and easy.
YO I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT HES SAYING BUT THE DUDE IS STRAIGHT CHILL .Very nice guy . Good grader . Him and foulds taught my class last sem . .they were a good combo.
Easy grader... very nice guy... always willing to help.
Great guy, very nice and always willing to help any day of the week. A little difficult to understand at first but becomes more clear as the semister moves by.

This guys sucks...avoid him at all costs...if you have to transfer like i did.
he's horrible. dont take him. only way hes good is with foulds. If you have him, you better hope you're a girl.
Bad professor, do not take him. The guy cannot teach, which is why he has students making presentations to teach the class the new material. Definetely selects favorite students, ESPECIALLY girls.
He looks like the columbian santa claus...and very friendly at some people. He cant teach, cant grade, and then picks on you if you dont understand.

I received an A in his course. However, one thing to be sure of is you must get on his good side from the start. You can do this by attending all classes and showing interest. Read and take notes on book. For oral presentation, know your stuff!!!
this guy wants us to know everything about this course from the begining. he doesn't know how to teach that's why he makes his students to do presentation to teach other student. the class is so easy but this ass makes it so hard.
TA is better than him. He doesn't even know what he is teaching and talking. He needs to go back in a school and learn English. Believe me if he is teaching any major classes in BME than i will change my major.
i dont know what will happend if The TA is not out there to teach the class. He is one of the worst professor who doesnt have any knowledge of teaching the course. he really need to stop picking on students. Take dr.Flouds for 302. His TA's the best.
I got an A in his class ONLY by getting on his good side from the beginning. That's the only way to do well...don't get on his bad side! His TA was the best!!!!!!!
KILL YOUR SELF BUT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Maybe he is good in research but he is worst prof. for teaching.
The class is very difficult if you do not do the reading. The problem is he usually assigns a tremendous amount of stuff. You need to read to get a good grade even if its just the cliff notes. 10 min every morning before class got me a B+.
Avoid Him ! I'm in his class right now ... that's our third week and I'm starting to hate the whole BME departement for hiring that guy ... Avoid Him !
Absolutely terrible! Do not take any classes with him. He first needs to learn how to speak english and spell. His tests are hard as well. His exact quotes are "I don't care if all of you in this class will fail the course...". He basically wants us all to fail! What kind of professor is that?
Don't take any of this stupid prof course
He is just terreble. He asks people to come to the board and makes fun of them if they don't know the answear. HE DOES NOT TEACH. HE JUST SIMPLY SUCKS.
AVOID HIM
DON'T TAKE HIM HE IS NOT A REAL TEACHER. HE SUCKS

Made a 2 credit class seem like a 4 credit one, very difficult, he's one of the professors that'll expect you to know every little detail. Other than that, he's a funny guy who'd probably be better off dressing like a Santa in the mall than teaching.

SUCKS...BIG TIME...try to stay away from him...but u wont be able to...he teaches like 9 out of ten BME classes
WOrst teacher.... he cant even teach an introduction class... dont kno what hes talkin about and hten expects u to pass a test that has sooo much information in it... This guy simply needs to go back to brazil or wherever hes from because hes that baddd. When i tell you dont pick him.. DOnt take him.. Try everything TO AVOID BRUNO.... lol... hesba
Horrible teacher!! But you can't even avoid him because he teaches most of the BME courses.
All he does his read off his POwer point presentation, nothing else, there is no teaching!
Not a real teacher. Probably not a good surgeon either. Can't teach anything, noone can understand anything. I just read the book and get A's.
Eccentric in his own way but his exams were not that hard and got exempt from the last common. Not as bad of an experience as I thought it would be.
My third class with him,he won't push you to learn unless you want to.You can get an A by only reading the couple of topics he stresses on.However, you have to decide whether you want to get something out of the course or not.Overall a very easy guy with language barrier that makes him misunderstood most of the time.
The worst professor at NJIT by far...he cant teach! And if you go to him for extra help he wont give it to you! he told me to get it from a friend! WTF!! If there is any way you could avoid Mantilla, save yourself the trouble and avoid this teacher!!
yea he's horrible... don't take him but you prob can't avoid him cuz he teaches a few classes... you need to teach urself everything so if you're not that type of person ur in trouble.. he's pretty full of himself and thinks cuz he's a surgeon he's smart but he can't even speak english so good luck with that one too... basically ur on ur own
The class was pretty easy. If you get on Mantilla's good side he's really helpful and quite funny. He does have a thick accent, but I got used to it really quick.
He is a little hard to understand, but overall very easy. I did not have to pay attention in class, I read a few things from the book and looked over his slides and got an A in the class. The good thing is, if you have an A average, you don't have to take the final!
Professor's ability to teach is pathetic. The reasons for this are twofold: his knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry is poor and his concern for his students is at a minimum. Because of this he is disorganized and his presentations are embarrassing. He conducts research???
He's horrible. Unfortunately, you can't avoid him. Attendance is a huuge chunk of your grade, if you don't go and do well, your grade will be low and vice versa. If you show up yet aren't doing too well, he'll bump you up. But count on teaching all that ish to urself. Good Luck.
He doesnt lecture, care about his students..He cuts the class very early..Vicious teacher..!!!!!!
useless class , terrible instructor..
Mantilla is horrible. He doesn't know how to teach at all and doesn't care about the students at all. He is also prone to favoritism, if he likes you then you will do good. If you are forced to take his class then if you read the chapters on your own you will get an A, but don't except to learn anything from him bc of his copied and pasted powerpnt
Do not take him if you have a choice to take a better prof. Mantilla does not know how to teach and does not really care. Nobody knows this but he was a brain surgeon back in his country so teaching a lower level physiology class isn't his thing. He only took attendance once and is somewhat prone to favoritism.
pompous and arrogant, challenge his knowledge and he'll attempt to put you in your place. grasp of engineering concepts is minimal, but still teaches mechanics classes. claims to be a neurosurgeon.
If you just ask him, "Professor, what does that word say?" He'll go, "Where? Come show me." And he'll FORCE you to come to the front of the class and he'll explain the entire electron transport chain (totally irrelevant) in tedious detail while you stand there and twiddle your thumbs. And then he'll ask you to sit down. Pointless. D:
Simply put, the guy is an arrogant jerk
The following sums it up: Mantilla will teach you about the brain, and he'll test you on the eye.
Great teacher. Be respectful and eager to learn. For the students who want to excel, this is the best professor to spark their interest and lead them to success. Most of his students are college freshman, this guy is an M.D./Ph.D, don't listen to those fools who say this guy doesnt know what he is talking about. You have to be sharp in this class .
Can't understand anything he says and he speaks to lightly, hard but you have no choice, he is the only BME 105 & 106 teacher
If you come one minute late to this class, he'll make you dance in front of the class.
Make sure u sit in front, he has a heavy accent. His test are stupid, yu learn so much info only to have a easy test on the easy material that you over looked. One test was labeling 5 diagrams...we went over 4 chapters. Print out the slides bring it to class n pay attention..txtbook is useless to much info that he doesn't use. Study guide helps tho
Great Professor
Very nice class. I learnt so much! It helped me in capstone. You do have to work hard in the class. If you put effort, then you will see the good effects in other classes. Because of this class, you will know how to analyze data properly, and also improve in matlab. I recommend this class to anyone. Just be honest and work hard you will be fine.
Had him for BME 105&106. He's not a very good teacher. He'll teach you one thing then put something entirely different when it comes to the exam. His exams are very detailed so the only way you can pass is if you read the chapters in the book. Don't listen to what he says and just use the book. Your grade depends on exams only and nothing else.
Horrible professor!!! Worst professor at NJIT. Will purposely give out quizzes on days somebody is not there. Will not take any excuse for an absence even if u were at the hospital. If u answer a question seriously, if it's not right he'll start making fun of u. Has no regards for students feelings. Literally brought a classmate to tears once.
Every BMe should have at least one class with mantilla. He has passion, is smart and will make you learn.
A little strange at first, but he warms up to students who actually do their work
Horrible prof. Doesn't know how to teach. But on the other side, his hardness makes you work hard n that's how u study seriously, he teaches how to write perfect lab report, which will 100% help you in future in real job market.:))
Mantilla has a very thick spanish accent.. be sure to sit close to front. tests are very hard unless you read the textbook. has an awesome mustache. talk loud, he's hard of hearing. just know the material.
He is certainly a different type of teacher in the sense that he'll either love you for doing the work he assigns or not like you at all if you're screwing around in his class. And if you choose to coast, then it's just as bad as not doing any work. He's a really good teacher when you show interest.
Dr. Mantilla is a very smart and hilarious guy. He makes jokes throughout class. When it comes to teaching though, he is not so good. Every lecture he cuts short but I don't blame him as his exams are straight out of the book. To pass just do one thing: buy the book and MEMORIZE it word for word. This is the only way you'll pass. I liked the class.
Smoking hot mustache, jovial man, shows passion and interest in Neurology and has several degrees in the field. Do not approach him from his blind side (I dare you to see what happens).
its hard at first the first three chapters requires reading but once you get through that its not bad hes a nice professsor
Let me break it down for you youngins coming in. This class is alot of work. Make sure you read before coming to class. Have a group group. Get work done on time. And know your stuff or else he'll put you on the spot. He'll offer you a lollipop and make you stand in the corner facing the wall if you sound clueless. Lol im glad im done. Peaceeee
Why is he a professor? He does not know how to teach. What a waste of space and time for the students and department. He needs to be replaced ASAP. All he does is sit and make fun of people. I wont be surprised if he gets charged with harassment. This guy thinks he could get away with everything. Watch it, Papi.
Great Professor! He is very knowledgeable.
One of the best professors I have ever had! All you have to do for an A is come to class and pay attention! I recommend sitting in the front and participating. He gives out extra credit if you can prove to him that you read the material ahead of time. It's not an easy class but majority of the material on the test, he goes over in class.
He does not have any quality to be professor. Do not take his course guys you gonna loose your money and kill of time.
BME 111 is an easy class but he makes it so difficult .
I understand he is very knowledgeable. However he is very disrespectful. Also, make sure you participate the whole time. Be selfish because that's all that matters to him. He barely counts your actual labs for the final grade. And don't try to help out friends during class, hell make you face a wall like a child.
I understand he is very knowledgeable. However he is very disrespectful. Make sure you participate the whole time. Be selfish because that's all that matters to him. He barely counts your actual labs for the final grade. And don't try to help out friends during class, hell make you face a wall like a child. He should be revaluated as a teacher.
Lectures are packed with information. Easy to doze off in his class when all he does is talk and talk. In order to do well in his class, read the chapter before coming to class and do the quizzes at the end of the chapters. If you read & do the quizzes and listen to him during lectures, you should get an A.
Honestly people complainabout BME111 because they expect it to be like high school. It really is not a hard class if you work on understanding the material instead of memorizing it. Also Mantilla trys to make you think like an adult in the real world, he wants us to actually learn, not just spit out information. He is one of my favorites.
Super-underrated professor whose reception by students should be matched by his credentials. His class is nowhere near as difficult as many students infamously purport. He also encourages students to participate actively in his class and show enthusiasm for the subject matter. Understand your basic concepts and immerse yourself in his lectures.
My only comment is, you better be good at teaching youself, because he is not going to teach you anything.
He likes to make fun of his students and calls you out. Be prepared to know your stuff and read ahead of class. His exams are okay. Its multiple choice, T/F, and matching so if you read your textbook you should be okay. There's no homework, just quizzes and pop quizzes. Sit towards the back of class so you don't get picked on.
Professor Mantilla relies on his TA to make his exams and does literally nothing to help prepare you for those exams. He likes to get off topic and doesnt teach from the book at all. Its not that hard of a class, its just physiology, but he makes it hard to pass and I think hes the only one that teaches this class.
Class was terrible, need to study a lot on your own, but was approachable after class and gave me tips when I asked because I was struggling.
His class was not informative. After the exam I realized that the exams are online (don't know where, but ask someone who already took this class he/she might) I don't know how I got an A, my average was 83.33%. I guess it was because of class participation. He is the only professor so it's better to get it done with without stressing too much
Participate! He picks favorites so make sure to participate and sit in the front and he will grade you more leniently
DON'T FRET! His rating doesn't do him justice. He depends on the textbook and every question he asks during class is based off that chapter's reading. Make sure you read the chapter before going to class so that you can participate. He puts A LOT of emphasis on participating (16% of grade) Other than that, he's fun to talk to and learn from.
what was supposed to be one the easier courses in engineering becane one of the hardest courses due to the way he runs the course. I'd say avoid him but I believe no one else teaches that course
He's Amazing, he just has high expectations for his students. Seriously, just READ THE TEXTBOOK, TAKE NOTES,SHOW UP TO CLASS EARLY & PARTICIPATE. If you show up to class early, you won't miss the quiz. If you read, you'll be ready to participate and know the material. If you do both religiously, you'll do well on the test. Et Voilà, there's your A!
The professor teaches you and prepares you for the outside world. But his way of teaching didn't make sense to me. Read the chapter before class and you also need to self-teach yourself a couple of the topics as well. Doesn't do a great job explaining either!!
Worst professor!!! He has a nasty attitude. Participation is big so try to participate as much as you can. Also, participation questions can help you with the exams. Material wise was pretty self-explanatory. Start watching Youtube Videos and read the textbook. I will never take him again.
Professor Mantilla is eccentric but is one of the best professors at NJIT. I heard horrible things about him that bear no merit. He wants people to think and not just memorize and copy-paste old labs.
Professor Mantilla is not a good professor. I took him for BME 111 and he had a nasty attitude towards the class. Students were asking him questions about a specific topic/concept and he responded rudely in my opinion. 4 tests and lectures don't make any sense. That textbook he provides is going to be your best friend for his class. Good luck!
Made me feel stupid for asking a question about a software we were never taught in before. Doesn't teach and says we are "doing fuzzy problems" despite us never learning what we're supposed to be learning. Waste of money and time. TA is best bet to learn anything and she is hard to reach if at all. Awful professor. Just awful.
Professor Mantilla has high expectations for his students. He begins each new class by explaining "Clarity of thought and expression" and how the expectation is that we students are smart and driven. The content is difficult, but he expects us to rise to the occasion. My favorite quote: "The frog will get your toes in the middle of the night..."
He doesn't treat his students with respect and I think he can get away with it because he's the only person who teaches these classes.
The worst professor I took in my life! It is a shame he is the only one running this course!
Professor Mantilla explains to students that he is the way he is because he was told he had to be serious w the students to satisfy ABET. He explains that wants us to be curious and to discover things ourselves. That being said, both 382 and 383 are difficult courses and you'll have to work for it. However, it's the admins fault, not Mantilla's.
Professor Mantilla has high expectations for his students. He wants his students to know how to explain concepts and actually understand them. He is not as bad as people say he is. He is a tough grader but if you participate and know your stuff then he will reward you.
Best professor to teach you a life lesson. Too bad he's retiring.
Overall great professor. Blunt with his criticism in terms of your work. But if you can't take that you need to grow up. If you put the effort in, you'll get a good grade.
Good riddance. NJIT's better off without him. Arbitrary grader. Rude to students cuz he can't teach. My only wish is that he retired before I needed to take him
This was the only C I ever received, and it was because the professor only taught content pulled from his derriere. If anyone questioned him, he just yelled and put them down, remaining unclear. Him being in the bme department for so long just shows their sloth to find a better prof. Hope the demons curse his retirement
This professor's style is unlike others, where it is most similar to an authoritarian approach, where he exerts strict control of the classroom (counting points for participation), uses fear (i.e. making them go up to the board), and arbitrarily counts participation without fairness. If grades didn't matter, classes would be much more enjoyable.
I've had bad professors, but this was the only one I learned absolutely nothing from. Grading was unclear and inconsistent. He rewarded participation from students he favored, regardless of quality, and dismissed smarter input (possibly because he didn't have the knowledge). The class felt more like a power trip than a learning experience.
