Bryan is a great teacher, despite having a quite thick french accent. He is also a generous marker for an econ teacher. He understands that it isnt an easy course and most students struggles so he gives effort marks. His tests are all materials covered in class, so very important to write down notes. I strongly recommend him.
Writes all of his notes by hand and does not put anything online so if you miss a lecture you have to get notes from someone or your screwed. He isn't very thorough either. You can tell he knows what he's talking about, but isn't very good at teaching it. Class average was very low I wouldn't recommend taking him.
He has a thick French accent. It's still understandable. He marks fairly and gives bonus marks on exams, and it makes your mark better. Easy material. Before the final(harder), you have to understand materials within few days after each class, then you'll be fine! A great course to increase your gpa! Be sure to understand final's material!
This class is not easy, but despite his thick French accent I found him to be a great prof since he writes down notes that you MUST copy (if you want to do well), so it keeps you engaged instead of falling asleep during a powerpoint lecture. Midterms are fair, final is hard. Good prof overall!
He is great! Absolutely recommended!
Bryan is a fantastic Econ teacher. Super young! You might mistake him for a student on the first day. WAY clearer than other profs at Langara. He scales his exam grades. I would absolutely recommend. Nice guy, great teacher.
He has a very heavy accent. He tells you that you don't need the text book but he is very hard to understand. He covers different things than the other profs. His exams are hard.
He has a very thick french accent which makes it harder to understand. Very hard mid-terms comparatively to other profs. Questions are not straight forward and easy to loose marks if not understood. I was deceived by the positive reviews before taking the course. LOL!
Don't know who gave him those high ratings but he's def a very hard teacher. He doesn't use textbook and you have to rely solely on notes for exams. He's also a hard marker. He tries to be helpful and has open office for those whole need help but be prepared to grind down HARD for his test.
You really have to understand how to apply the concepts to pass the exams. Class average was D or F but some people still get A. Eventhough the exams are hard, he's not that mean. After the final exam, he gives us an opportunity to look over the exams with him to find some extra marks, so if you're borderline, you can actually pass the course!
Very very hard but as long as you get to his office for clearification, you'll do fine.
Harder than 1221. You have to understand the material to answer his short questions exams. Try explaining the concepts and drawing the graphs to prepare for his exams. Go to his office if you don't understand! Hard to get an A, but if you follow the above suggestion then it's possible! Overall, you can learn more from him. But hard marker!
Not easy at all. One of the hardest courses I've ever taken and I've studied a lot for his class. He's a great guy and very personable but he is a very hard marker. Also, make sure you have like 10 different colored pens for his class
Willing to help students that show effort and determination. Not a slack-able course. Econ is a problem solving field and this prof is a problem solver. If you put in effort and go to his office hours, you'll do incredibly better than the average. Fun and generous and humble.
HARD CLASS, HARD MARKER HARD MARKER
HARD MARKER, EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM STUDENT FOR AN ENTRY COURSE.MOST OF THE MATERIAL IS NOT BASED ON THE TEXTBOOK. HAVE TO STUDY VERY HARD TO PAST. (THE CLASS AVERAGE WAS LOW.)
Great prof. Not easy, but if you have any questions he is always happy to help. If you don't understand something, you NEED to ask for help otherwise you might fail an exam. He teaches things other profs might not like externalities - makes it more interesting. 2 midterms, 2 online quizzes, 1 final. He has an accent, so maybe not good for ESL ppl.
His exams are really hard and on top of that he is a really hard marker. DONT EVER TAKE HIS CLASS. Class average percentage is always less than 50%. Half the class dropped out. you can take him if you want to fail the course:/ good luck
deserves a chilli pepper
Deserves a chili pepper. Also has an amazing computer wallpaper.
I'm not sure why Langara hires a lot of Econ, Stats, and Math profs with super thick accents. As if its not hard enough to understand the content let alone trying to decipher what they are actually saying on top of that. I'm sure if he didn't have an accent I would have done much better, as I could have in every course that has profs with accents.
In order to do good in a class the prof needs to be able to teach and explain the concept well and BREGUET cannot teach at all . the notes he writes on board are really bad. his exams follow the problem set sheet but overall his exams are HARD. attended every class and never understood what he was teaching. if u take him get ready to teach urself.
His class is tough. He has thick accent that sometimes you may get lost. You have to clearly understand the definitions and examples to do well in his tests, which are hard. Midterms are harder than final. Make sure you take specific notes and review carefully all the problem sets he gives. Despite all of that, he is super nice and willing to help.
He has a very strong French accent, which I have nothing against, except that it makes it extremely hard to understand the concept of the lectures. Also, what he draws on his powerpoint is very messy, my notes are a bunch of scribbles of graphs, and no explanations. He doesn't follow the textbook very well, and doesn't give much practice sheets.
A great and helpful professor. It might be difficult for you to understand his class at first, but if you ask questions frequently and solve all the problem sets, you will find everything clear and economics is wonderful.
great class. like his teaching. clear n detailed materials for mid terms. want to take his course again but he does not teach macro this semester. hard work great score bonus marks for mid terms and exams. getting A+ is not that hard.
He tells the class that buying the textbook is a waste because he teaches his way. I read the textbook and I understand micro, but when he starts teaching he makes it complicated I don't understand why. And he tell the class that we will fail or just pass the first midterm. He was right! Go to his office hours and ask questions. Has thick accent.
Bryan's way of teaching is by far one of the most confusing teaching methods I have ever come across. His class are interesting but you have to pay attention as he does not hand out notes so what you write down from a class is what you get!! Over all a good prof but you have to work you behind off to pass his class!!!!
Bryan, is a very tough marker. His teaching methods are not the best as he does not have any notes. What he rights down in that lecture are your notes so make sure your'e paying attention. If you take his class be prepared to go beyond class time and his notes to understand concepts discussed.
I've seen lots of complaints about Bryan being hard to understand, but honestly I don't think it's an issue if you SIT AT THE FRONT of the class. Do that, and all of your problems will be solved. Try to get interested in the material, and focus on UNDERSTANDING THE CORE CONCEPTS. If you do this, you'll easily get an A. He's a good prof.
Do the problem sets and sample midterms and you should atleast get a B. Take clear notes in class as he doesn't give out notes. He has a thick accent but he is very passionate about economics if you pay attention.
Fairly condescending. Take with another proof if you can.
He understands economics but he doesn't know how to teach. Expects you to know the material by just his notes but doesn't help at all. Tough class. If you want to pass, it'll be tough.
Bryan was a decent prof for econ, but he was tough. It took me the first midterm to understand his style of teaching and testing. He goes over everything you need to know in his lecture, but you need to do some problems yourself to fully understand everything.
Helpful teacher, writes his own notes. However, tests are very hard and it's hard to catch up if you miss a class. He didn't require a textbook but if you want high marks you should have it.
As everyone has sad, he is tough marker, but if you go to class and pay attention you should have no problem passing. This guy ives for economics.
midterms and final are so tough! Do not take his courses
No textbook needed as he writes his own notes in class. His approach on economics is a little bit different and not like the usual teacher. Sometimes explains too fast in class and a lil bit hard to understand. Go to his office hours and you'll be fine. 2 midterms and 2 quizzes
Never take his class.......u can if you want to FAIL....!!!
Bryan is a very helpful instructor. Language is not a big deal in his class, believe me English is not my second language even, it is third. He is very clear at concept and what he is teaching. Before showing up to class, read the chapter before he teaches, at this point everything is clear for you. SIT IN THE FRONT LINE, do the homework.
Bryan is a very tough, but also very fair prof. What I found with him is once I started to understand his teaching methods, things started to click. If you are looking for an easy grade, look elsewhere, but if you want to be forced to work hard and really understand concepts, Bryan is your man. MAKE SURE TO GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!
Bryan is a good guy, but his tests are difficult. Just reviewing his notes is not enough. You should pay attention to his class and visit his office hours, He would gladly answer your questions. You should never miss his class. He has a thick accent.
Tough grader, and you can't understand his lecture easily.
- No text needed, as the students have to copy whatever he writes. - Style is unique, but also butchers GPA. - Exams are hard. Exam questions have little relations to problem sets and practice exams. - There has been 1 or 2 people getting more than 100% on exams, but vast majority (talking about 70-80%) get below 60%, exam average sits around 45%.
Many people don't agree with me but I think he is really a great prof. You won't pass his class if just want to memorize everything, he taught me how to understand and use concepts. I always went to his office hour and ask many stupid questions and he never mind to explain to me. I tried hard and he graded my paper fairly. Overall,He is nice guy!!
very hard marker. my class average is below 50%. do not take him his section has to work much harder AND has a lower average. it's in your self-interest to avoid him at all costs. his lecture is god to 'sit in on'
Fine! Hard marker but you'll learn a lot more about economics taking his course. Gives good lecture notes. No need to buy a book and uses quizzes instead of a electronic homeowner waste of time.
Bryan is an awesome teacher, hard market but fair. He's class is not particularly hard but obviously, need to work very hard for it. Go to his office hours!!!!!
All material covered was non-textbook required. I didn't even need to spend a penny-actually a nickel to be more specific. Everything had to be hand-written and it was difficult to copy since he wrote it out on the spot.
Bryan is difficult to understand due to his heavy French accent and how quietly he speaks. His notes are also somewhat confusing and difficult to follow.
Good prof.
Did not enjoy class as it was very dependant on only lectures and no material could be studied out of class in order to get a broader knowledge of material.
Take Bryan only if you want to learn more in depth. If it's just for credits, choose a different prof. Very theory heavy. Notes are made in class and aren't posted. Exams aren't tricky, but if you don't understand something, throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks won't work.
If your passionate about learning economics, he's your guy. Attend every class, do the problem sets, and review notes. He's much more approachable than he lets on. Easy to access outside class. He is the hardest in the department and gets the lowest averages but you will learn the most with him and be more prepared for future econ classes.
Very good and helpful to students
You have to work hard for his class, otherwise you wont pass. He is a great professor and his lectures and exams are pretty clear. He makes sure you know what he wants from you.
Bryan is a great prof, but I found this course very hard. His lectures and exams are pretty straight forward, but he makes sure that you really understand the theories. If you don't understand something, just memorizing your notes/homework won't work, you will need to ask for help. Fortunately, he's always available online or during office hours.
Bryan is an amazing professor. You either love him or you hate him. There is no in between. His lectures are pretty engaging and fun. He has his own ways to be witty. If you come to class, participate and enjoy learning in general, he's the guy to take any economics class with. I loved all of his classes that I took.
Not accurate in terms of grading. You could get 80% of the content correct but if his interpretation is that youre wrong then youll end up with 1/5 on that question. Grading system doesnt reflect the weight and there are oftentimes 3/4 questions all mashed together into 1 long question with several question marks. Find another prof.
Don't take econ with him, you'll get a good understanding of the concepts but your grades will suffer. I retook the same class with a different prof and it was night and day. You could get an A+ in any other econ prof's class for the work it takes to get a B- in Bryans. Not worth it!
I attended most of his class and barely understood what he was saying, for the final he wouldn't let me move it even though I had a legitimate reason in doing so with a note as well. I strongly recommend you not to take his class, because of his teaching skills, and many more reasons.
I failed, yet I enjoyed taking this class. It's very easy to learn concepts from him and hes very clear in his notes, lectures are great, but extremely anal when it comes to marking. As the other reviews said, come here to learn but dont expect to GPA boost from here.
I have no grudge against Bryan at all hes a nice guy but you really really have to dedicate so much if you want to get at least a B in this class. Bryans not a prof who gives high school questions on exams, he really goes too much in depth of the concept and sometimes forgets that were still learning. I dont recommend him if you want an A
Do not take Bryan's Econ classes like ANY. I failed and he's just not useful at all for any help. I once went to his office hours and he literally just said the same answer again.... DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, I REPEAT. It will ruin your gpa and it'll just ruin everything.
Brian is hard but very fair. I don't really understand the reviews here. His lectures are really interesting - he doesn't just go over a powerpoint- and he explains everything really clearly. He's also always available if students need help.
I really liked taking macro with him, his style is different. He doesn't follow the textbook too closely but provide everything necessary in class (He posts the notes online after). Not the easiest class for sure but you also don't have to work too much to pass. Just review the problem sets and past exams.
Bryan makes a big deal of being a tough marker but he gives a lot of chances for bonus marks which makes his grading pretty forgiving. Lectures are clear and he walks the class through practice exams so it's easy to study. Beware if you're not up on your maths tho
I am thankful I took his class, he taught me how to treat my teachers to get a 4.0. He isn't a respectful person who looks out for your intellectual development. If you want to get a 4.0, lie and manipulate your teachers so you can get the job done. Whenever I felt bad about doing that to a genuine teacher I just remembered his smug face.
I took his class last term (Spring 2020) and I have to say, he was one of the better profs when we had to transition online because of covid19. I highly recommend if you have to take an online course in econ next term. But his tests are not easy, that's for sure!
Have to focus in class, otherwise you will totally confused. Detailed, will answer your questions precisely. Apparently, it is not a good choice to registered for his courses if you want to boost your GPA. But anyway, nice professor.
Don't register his class! I could tell you, he is sucks. He explain everything in a complicated way, it is not easy to understand. Economics is a subject that really need to do some practice after understanding certain concept, but I could tell u, Bryan only give out 1 practice per 2 week, which is not enough.
Bryan is clearly very passionate about economics, his lectures are interesting and he encourages students to ask questions. Make sure you attend class for the last half of semester or else you'll struggle with the ecomonic models in the final.
Bryan is a wonderful professor. His passion for the BoC and WEF is outstanding. Bryan has given me an experience I won't ever forget. I will forever be grateful of him.
Professor Breguet's undying loyalty to our dear leader Klaus Schwab will bump up his social credit score for sure!
Explains the concepts very well, fair grader, straightforward tests. Just take note of everything he says during the lectures and you will be fine. The practice tests he provided were also very helpful for the actual test. Highly recommend taking this course with Breguet
Difficulty level is very high. Quizzes are out lecture material.
Personally his "teaching" style is not for me. Would post online lectures and solve the weekly problem sets during class assuming we knew everything. Midterm worth 30%, class average was a C-, class reduced in size by 70% after MT. Final worth 40 and essay worth 30. I'd say avoid as he doesn't seem to care about his students' progress.
Has high standards which make you push yourself. Rational and can be reasoned with if the argument makes sense. He will not force-feed you the material if you don't reach out and is very helpful and detailed when in feedback if you reach out. If you focus on lecture videos and practice problems and you understand the concepts you'll be fine.
This class is structured with just one midterm, which is exceedingly difficult, followed by an even more challenging project. As a result, a significant percentage of students dropped the course, and the class average was a C-. Unfortunately, Bryan appears to be disinterested in students' progress, and lectures are unclear.
Bryan's lectures are quite heavy and in-depth. He will say he's a tough marker, but in fact gives multiple chances to get extra marks. He will guide you into exams well, but don't expect to be babied. Most grades based on exams and term paper. Do not skip his class, you will fail. Only downside is the accent, hard to keep up sometimes.
Brian isn't the easiest prof out there but he gives a lot of opportunities to improve. If you do better in the final, he doesn't count your midterm. I don't really understand the comments about Brian being so tough. You have to work in his class but he is fair and you learn more than in an average course.
Rarely in my academic career have I come across a professor this good. His grasp of the material is extraordinary and his IQ is clearly >125. An economics genius. Sure he tells it like it is, but who doesn't want that from a professor? Would highly recommmend. He's make a great Premier of BC.
A fair and funny teacher. Doesn't take attendance or participation marks so you don't see 3/4th of the class until midterms or finals. All your marks are based on a project, midterm(s), quizzes, and the final nothing else (so study). Allows "cheat" sheets. Has a thick French accent which makes it a bit hard to understand.
He's as good an economics prof as Milton Friedman, except with french accent. They are even around the same height!
Second time with Bryan and have enjoyed both times. Bryans gets straight to the point with very little fluff. He does not use textbooks. He will guide you well going into the exam. Be sure to attend every class, or you will likely fail. Gives extra chance for marks. If you focus on being in the top 5, you will finish with A/A+ (he curbs the grades)
Smartest economist in Canada. Maybe the toughest grader in Langara. textbook was provided by him, although he never used it. Allows cheat sheets in MT and final. You need to engage in the lectures to learn. He curves up the final mark. His French accent made me more interested in macro. All you need to do is basically try hard for Midterm andfinal
Bryan is a great instructor if you want to learn economics however, his lectures are quite heavy and very in depth. Also, he allows cheat sheet in the exams but exams are very hard. Finally, attend the class if you can otherwise you will struggle at the end of semester.
I failed econ and got A 2nd time. Don't get why ppl say Bryan's hard, he marks on knowing concepts over small detail like drawing lines on a paper which I frequently mistaked on looking back. If you can explain econ to a 13 yr old, you get A, but not if you get stuck on minor details (which he doesn't even care about). In contrast to my 1st prof.
Do not take Bryan if you are looking to get a good mark. He is a good teacher but a tough marker who focuses on theory in his class. The class average for the first midterm was 47%, with only one person getting above a 74. If you are only looking to learn, by all means, he is a great prof, but if you plan to transfer DO NOT TAKE!
Swiss Legendary. Maybe the smartest econ prof in Canada and the toughest grader too. His lecture was fun and engaged even it was 8:30am. Also, he allowed cheat sheet in the MT and Final. Ngl I miss his 3000$ with the accent every morning. Overall, study hard and enjoy.
Worst prof i ever had in my entire life, his accent so thick you couldn't even understand half of what he said. The final grade is based on two tests and one research paper, and he's extremely stingy with points. He doesn't give any feedback or comments either. Overall, super frustrating and unhelpful. do urself a favor and avoid this guy.
One of the only professors I've had who actually knew what they were teaching. He is very detailed in his lectures and even used GTA V as an example. Has very clear expectations and instructions with the research paper and tests. As long as you study and actuallt engage in what he teaches, I believe you will find success in his class. 10/10 prof.
Amazing lectures, easy to follow along but one of the toughest graders ive encountered, and quite short temper for formatting mistakes in assignments
If you are a giant baby who are not ready for learning like a mature economic student. DON'T TAKE HIS COURSE. If you wanna sth real and interesting, come! His course is a great place where you wanna your reasoning/critical thinking skills can be challenged. He is very good at pushing you to think like an Economist.
Easily one of the best profs I've ever had. Phenomenal lecturer, brutal grader, brilliant economist. Strict but fair. Don't be shy, go to office hours and ask questions. He is very helpful, don't mistake directness and impartiality for lack of caring. Engaging, world-class lectures. Rare to come across a prof of this high caliber at Langara.
Bryan's a great instructor - no bs, reasonable guy. He's well-informed, passionate about Econ, and humorous as well. Go to as many lectures as you can and pay attention; you will comfortably get a high grade. I paid attention to everything he touched upon in class and easily achieved an A+. Much more engaging than many of my econ profs at ubc.
Bryan is very strict with the things that he wants. Very strict in grading exams, take note of everything he says before an exam and it will surely help you. Got a D, but the way he graded it is very reasonable. He's an amazing but strict and a serious prof, doesn't play games with the things he says. Babies aren't allowed in his class.
