Not always clear with expectations. More than once I got a grade back with notes like "supposed to use examples from the book," but I couldn't find that instruction anywhere. Exams based off of lectures and homework. Exams are open book/note, but not easy; they test your memory of the source, incl. videos. Major projects are pretty easy-- do well.
Cool guy. Good class. Learned a ton. Take this dude.
Horrible teacher, I didn't know that you could be a communications teacher and have trouble communicating to the class, what you want them to do. Yeah he is a cool guy and all but its just a front. He doesn't keep you posted on your grades. Then he grade harshly on your speech. Dose not make sure that your are grasping what he want you to learn.
I had this guy for the same class and I have no idea what this other person is talking about. Prof. Brown was awesome. He went over everything and sent out reminders I think four times a week or something crazy like that. I was NEVER lost. I suppose you have to read your e-mail or check blackboard. Take him cause he's awesome!
We mainly watched movies, answered questions about them then wrote very short papers (1 page) on different aspects of film. He isn't too strict on grading which is great. If you want to learn a little about film and get the humanities requirement I'd recommend this course with him. Don't bother about the book, he only uses it once!
Unlike CST 151, in this class he just made no sense. The speech book was over 100 dollars and the quizzes didn't seem to match any of the readings which he's obsessed over. He's very strict about the technicalities of speech outlines and deducts points for the smallest things like saying "um". Attendance in this class will help your grade though!
Cool teacher. Learned a ton. Was very helpful.
He is super funny and the class is interesting. You will gain a lot more confidence at public speaking by the end of this course. Assignments are fairly easy and there is a final presentation. Exams are from the notes you take in class. I highly recommend him to everyone who needs to take this course.
Great prof. Had him during the summer and it was a great class.
I took this class as a hybrid, and it is a bit of work but nothing hard. Just time-consuming. This professor is GREAT! hes funny and laid back and makes the class feel very comfortable. We watch movies and did answer questions based on the lecture from that day. 100% recommend!
He's a harsh grader, doesn't email back, will not communicate with his students whatsoever, and doesn't let you turn in one single thing in late even if you have a valid excuse. He gives a lot of homework and is terrible at updating things on blackboard for you to actually turn in your homework! Do yourself a favor and do not take his class!!
GREAT professor! I have taken him for all of my film classes and a couple of communication classes. I would take again if he offered anything else.
I really liked the class. I thought I would hate it but I ended up learning alot from it. I did not think it was hard but I went to every class. Keep up with the class and it is an easy A. No complaints!
He is a nice guy, but his syllabus are not updated to the class which makes tracking your points extremely confusing. They will have the wrong due dates and/or some assignments will be unavailable to view on Blackboard constantly.
Godo teacher. I really liked the class and it was not hard. He sends out emails all the time with due dates and stuff. I had no problems and was happy with it.
I really liked the class and the teacher and it was really good to learn how to give speeches. He kept sending us stuff with deadlines for the weeks assignments that reminded me to do them because I have a job and a full class load.
Worst teacher ever. Not clear with directions, gave so many homework assignments every week, hard to keep up with, awful speech assignments, graded super harsh, was nice in person but was awful outside of class, rude
I really enjoyed taking professor Brown's class. I learned so much and had a lot of fun. My favorite thing was all of the readings he provided. There were tons of readings but they weren't overwhelming to get through. He's also very interesting which means I never felt bored in the class. Professor Brown is also very understanding and helpful.
I really liked the class. I thought I would hate the class because it is public speaking but it was cool. This class had the same amount of work as my history hybrid class. No big deal. Prof. Brown also helped me when I was going through some personal stuff.
I really liked this class and I didnt find it too hard. Brown taught me to be a good speaker and I have a littel more confidence. He gave us alot of extra credit. I had to work for it tho.
I took his film theory class in the Czech Republic. The class was great and it taught us about the history and culture of Europe through film. It was great to learn about those films and filmmakers while in Europe. I loved when we got to see the founder of the school's work and have him speak to us. It was great! I would definitely do it again.
It's only 30 minutes into the first day of class and the professor is very interactive, funny, and straight forward. He expects you to do your work, which is not a lot to be honest. There is a daily sheet to turn in and it looks easy. He does not accept late work but announces all the due dates the fist day of class. Will check back in end of semes
Very understanding & flexible, responsive when you email him, & you can tell he really cares... he never fails to remind you about homework before and after class and consistently sends out those Blackboard announcements to, once again remind you of the due dates. Lectures were hilarious & never boring. I would definitely take his class again.
I LOVED CST 151. I took his hybrid at MCB Quantico. We watched a movie every class. I learned so much in his class and it was all incredibly interesting. There are lots of choices in his class for what you write about, as in you can pick a movie, ect. He is incredibly knowledgeable and you can tell his passion is 100% for cinematography. Unique.
Will not take him again he gives more zero's out then A's even when you work hard for it .
I loved his film class because it taught me so much and I really liked learning about all of the ways films are made. The class is not hard but you need to keep up.
One of my favorite professors at NOVA! I love movies and I loved his class. He is really laid back and takes his students seriously. His lectures were interesting and I really liked the assignments. The screen pitch was alot of fun!
Professor Brown was really good! I took his film appreciation 1 class. He is very energetic and good at getting people excited. There were papers due each week, which could be stressful depending on how busy someone is in any given week. But if time was managed well they weren't unbearable to do.
Professor Brown is an incredible teacher! I really enjoyed listening to his lectures, as they were funny and really made me enjoy coming to class. He is very much invested in making sure that his students understand the course and gives great feedback. I haven't been back to college in over 5 years, this was a great class to start with!
He knows his stuff. Really good lectures. Do not take him over the summer if you have other classes or a job, its a lot of work and he grades papers harsher then some English professors at NOVA.
I have taken two classes with Dr. Brown and he's always been supportive of my creativity. His expectations are clear and he makes lectures fun. There are many opportunities to raise your grade if you listen.
I took his summer film class, it was interesting and I learned a lot. However the grading could be a bit harsh considering the amount of work that was assigned.
I had him for CST 110 and I thought it was a great class. I felt like the whole semester I was worried if I was going to do the speech correctly. He made us feel better about that. I liked learning all of the material.
His lectures were fun and the movies we watch are (usually) entertaining. Remember to save the worksheet you get each class, the feedback he gives should be treated as gospel and will be endlessly useful on the final. I didn't save them and was on my own.
Such a wonderful professor, he knows what he's talking about and is very clear on the final project! While attendance isn't mandatory, strive to be at every class, READ THE SYLLABUS. He made our class incredibly entertaining and shared stories of his friends.
Amazing professor. He teaches you how to analyze films and think about them in a different way. He really wants to see everyone succeed and think hard about movies.
Good professor. If you show up you will do okay. If you miss you got to get the notes from another students. I missed a couple of classes and he emailed me. Good movies and l learned allot.
He doesnt grade of realness he grades off what he thinks make sense to him. when you takescreening notes its best for you to go up to him or ask a person that has tken that class for help or notes cause he will give you a 4 out of 10 for no reason. I am a female fine arts major and I would never recommend him. better call on prof Stallings period.
I think he is a straight forward teacher don't skip class or you will be behind each class you go over powerpoint then you watch movie and writes a review based on the powerpoint make sure to take notes you will be fine only three big assignments. he has a lot of knowledge and connecting in the industry. he is a great teacher.
I really liked the class. He made it fun to watch and learn about movies. I wish I had more time to watch more movies, but I am glad I took this class. There are a few assignments outside of class, but keep going to class and you will be fine.
Great professor. He's critical on writing composition, so if you struggle on that, you'll take a toll on the assignments. Class routine is: lecture, then analyzing a movie. Save the worksheets, you'll need it for the final writing. Has connections within the industry if you're majoring in cinema. Somewhat strict on attendance, don't be 15 min late.
I took his 8 week class. If you are more than 15 minutes late, then you are not allowed to do the worksheet. We would take a few notes then watch a movie. At home we had to watch another movie. Then write up a short comparison of the two movies. Most of the time you wont have to watch the entire movie.
Hes a good guy, but not as a professor. He has zero sympathy/empathy for students who have no clue to what his screening notes are asking. He gives vague feedback to your questions and grades extremely hard. If youre a film major, sure take him. If you arent and just need credits avoid him.
As long as you pay attention in class and do the work outside of class, you'll get at least a B if not an A. Professor Brown will probably be the sweetest person on this earth.
He is the heaviest grader Ive ever had. He grades everyone as they are all film majors in post grad. Their are weekly assignments and I as well as the majority of the class doesnt receive higher than a 4/10. He expects specific details on specific details and expects answers to questions that arent asked in the assignment. Dont take the class
Professor Brown gives out complicated tasks for you to do and when you do a group project or any assignment that he gives that is too hard you won't pass. He also gives lame movies to do that are too boring and some are inappropriate that contains nudity. I thought this course taught documentary films. Don't waste your time with this professor.
Great class! I liked all of the movies and I am not a film major. The notes we had to do while watching were tough but you get used to them. I liked all of the projects. We had a group project we did during class so I'm not sure what the other reviewer is talking about. We didnt have anything to do outside of class. Great instructor.
This was one of my favorite classes at NOVA! I took many classes at other campuses and took this one because it was the only section offered. I am so glad I did. I loved the class because it really made me think about film from more than a how to make
I have taken every class Dr. Brown has to offer. He makes the material interesting and tries to figure out our interests to keep it relevant to us. When I had any questions he was always available in his office. He returned emails quick and was a quick grader. Honestly the best professor I had at NOVA.
Do not be fooled by these previous reviews. The majority of them are probably film majors or have some previous knowledge. He was an extremely harsh grader when it came to screening notes and would only give credit to answers that made sense to him. Unless this class is mandatory for your major, I suggest you avoid it all cost, at least with him.
Professor Brown is great! He made the lectures fun and interesting. When we were in class before this stupid virus, he was hilarious. Yeah there are screening notes but its not bad once you understand what is happening with them. I loved the class and will definitely take him again.
He is very passionate about film and he knows so much about it. I am a retired Marine and I took this class as an elective for my IT degree. I loved the challenge and I will never look at films the same way again. I would take him again, but I do not have any electives left. Advice: ask him questions when you struggle in the class. He helps!
great professor. Grading was straight forward and clear. I got my elective and I was happy with it.
Good class and professor. This was probably the most helpful class I've had at NOVA.
Dr. Brown knows more about film than I think I could ever know. This was a class I saved until my final semester because I took the production courses and all the other film studies courses. Class was awesome! The talks we had in class opened my eyes to even more about film than the other classes. There are only a few assignments.
This was a class that I expected to be a blow off because it was just giving us the ins and outs of a portfolio. It wasn't a blow off at all. There was so much helpful stuff in the course I didn't want to miss a class. The class is super informative and he teaches it in a way that makes it easy to understand.
Dr. Brown is a great professor. I really liked the course but I really liked the way he cared about us during COVID. Going online was tough for everyone but he helped us stay connected and continue on. I wish we would have stayed in class because he is really funny!
Dr. B is one of my favorite NOVA profs. I came from another campus to take CST 152 bc it was offered online & the only section I could take. I am glad I did! He helped me so much in learning how to think about movies in a different way than technical. He really wants you to learn. He is grades depend on you understanding the material & thinking.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS One of the worst professors I've ever had the displeasure of taking. Went into the class thinking it would be a fairly simple class. I was wrong. The only lectures he gives are prerecorded. Grading criteria is extremely unclear The work is hard based on the information provided. I have more to say but I've run out of characters
His class is pretty easy and straight forward, even for a sped up 6 week course. Weekly assignments can be done within just the first two-three days, and the movie choices are pretty good, not just some boring ancient films or documentaries. The screening notes are pretty annoying but all other work is short with 3 papers that are 1-2 pages only.
Loved the class. I took this because I needed and elective and I like movies. The assignments were not tough but you have to think. I liked most of the movies we watched. No tests and he is a cool laid back teacher.
Took for Intro to Film and you don't need a textbook, only Netflix. His lectures are great because he points out aspects of film you never even thought to think about. Homework is to watch a movie each week and focus on a specific part of it and one project based on a movie of your choice and an assigned aspect (like directing, cinematography).
There are no tests or quizzes. All the assignments are heavy writing. You watch movies and videos + have to analyze them. Professor grades attendance every class and does not post notes/lectures. Projects: 1st you talk about making a movie, 2nd is a writing assigned to you, and 3rd is about a movie actor of your choice. Get to class on time!
Took him for film appreciation 2 because i needed another course. It was very fun bc we talked about so much that i never thought about with movies. i learned a ton and his lectures kept me awake. i really think this is a great class with a good prof.
I loved this class. You learn ton about movies. The class is not tough. A couple of essays that are creative and screening notes. No tests.
Best professor I have had. He made even an early online lecture fun and interesting. The grading is laid back as long as you know what you are writing about. I talked to him a ton outside of class about the movie industry. He knows his stuff. I wish I had more chances to take classes with him but I just graduated!!
Great professor and a good class. I did not think I wanted to take this class because it seemed like stuff I already knew. I didn't know as much as I thought. There are assignments but they are alla but you. There are a few quizzes and a final quiz. It is not hard.
Great prof! I have had almost every film class at this point and this was one of my last. This class is about getting your portfolio ready. Some of my classmates were transferring but I am going right into the industry. He told us how to make our portfolios for getting jobs or transferring. All assignments are for you. Do the work and its all good.
I wouldnt take him if I don't have to. Honestly no help what so ever, first he messes up am and pm in the zoom lecture so i lost 10 points since i didnt know what time the lecture was and i go to him since im having a hard time applying the concepts in class to the work and he tells me to suck it up. The films he gives to work on are difficult too.
Great teacher! This was one of two of my first film classes at NOVA and I can say that this was one of those classes I did not think I needed until I took it. Dr Brown really cares about students and it shows in his talks and feedback. I recommend him to anyone.
I took this class bc it is required but this was the most helpful class I took so far. The class is not hard but you learn a ton in a short time. Discussions and lectures with an essay at the end. Ask him anything about movies trust.
This guy is very disrespectful. Pease do not take him. It seems that he is allowed to do as he pleases. I had a severe issue with the way he was grading my assignments. (100% on 1/2 done work, 50% on complete work, etc). When he started ignoring my emails I went to the Dean and then the Dean did nothing. I assume because he is assistant dean
I loved this class! Not a film major but you learn so much. Took the class during COVID. He was always on zoom and tried to get everyone involved and asked for questions when we had them. You do worksheets during the week and an essay. there is a part where you come up with your own movie idea. Seriously awesome professor who loves movies.
Not a tough class. There are note assignments each week and an essay. He lectures but tells you what to do. Just take nots and ask questions and your good.
Good teacher and nice guy. There are discussions each week and he really tried to get everybody talking in Zoom. You have a big essay at the end. You talk about film and he clearly loves it and knows it.
I took this during Covid and not on campus. Show up to the discussions cause it is not recorded but he sticks around after class as long as you need as long as you are there for class. Dont come late. He is easy to understand and assignments arent tough.
He gives really good lectures and hes very funny but hes so difficult to reach and youre lucky if he even replies to your email and makes little to no accommodations for late work. The fact that he doesnt give students access to the powerpoints is dumb. its an easy class but its frustrating if u plan to have any issues. he doesnt care
This was a great class and the work was not hard. Just take notes and ask questions and you will be fine. We answered questions on the movies and came up with an idea for a movie. The essay at the end is not bad if you just do it on things you did well on. Take him.
This class was fascinating. As an older student, I went thinking I would be lost. He makes you look at film in a really different way. The assignments are note assignments and discussions each week. There is a final essay but it comes in stages. Take him for this class if you get a chance.
This a good class and teacher. Yeah he's strict on the no late thing but just dont be late. The class has these notes worksheets and an essay you complete. Nothing too hard.
Great professor! There are discussions and an essay you have to complete. Not too much homework or assignments. You really learn about a portfolio and what you need to do.
this is a fun class where you watch movies and talk about them. i liked that we got to come up with our own movie idea. you watch a movie each week and fill out a workshett. he gives you tips on assignments and extra credit. do the work and your good.
I'm not even finished with this class yet and I'm done. I've missed a couple of assignments (I work full-time). I'm a film major, so I saw the good reviews and ignored the bad. A MISTAKE. Grading is ridiculous, rude, ignores your emails/comments if he doesn't like you, and has favorites. Unless you want to brown-nose your way through, don't. CST250
This was a fun class and the lectures were interesting. Essays are not bad and screening notes can be tough but doable. Easy overall if you do the work and hes a fast grader.
I have taken several classes with Dr. Brown and this is one of my last because I graduate soon. Showing up is important and doing the work is required. He has high expectations, but that is good. He is very supportive of his students and really pushes you to challenge yourself. There are journals, discussions, lectures, and an essay.
Took this professor for summer semester 2021, he is easy grader on journal assignments while he is extremely tough grader on screening notes assignment. His introductory assignment and his final exam are easy, I was able to get 100/100 with less work, two paragraphs for the intro, and just 5 for the final. His extra credit are necessary to pass.
Dr. Brown is an awesome Prof!, But the screening notes can be tough. One thing I dislike is he doesnt record his lectures. If you miss out on class or you r doing something else while one zoom, you will be totally lost for the screening notes. Other than that, he grades fast and he is organized. He responds to emails quickly too. TAKE HIM!!!!!
Great class and teacher who really worked with us to learn about what we need to do in the film programs. He takes time to learn about you and what you want to do and makes you plan ahead. One advice is to take the class early in the program and not late like i did.
He is a fast grader and encourages you to stay on top of things. This is good bc there is so many assignments in the class. Not a hard grader and emails you back quick when you have a question. Not always the case in an online class.
Wonderful teacher. Very interesting lectures and you can tell he knows about movies and loves teaching. Wish the class was longer than 7 weeks but the class is worth it.
Good class where u watch a movie a week and do a journal and question sheet in the movie. Three essays which is film review. Come up with own movie idea and final essay. Nothing hard. Just read and pay attention u good.
I didn't want to take this class as it is where they teach you about how to be a college student. Maybe how to find the library or register for classes. It was much more! He teaches you about your program and how to be an artist. There are quizzes and some little writings but nothing too hard. Just watch deadlines. He cares about his students.
great class where he teaches you about making movies. some of the movies are not great but that's ok. he has these screening notes that arent bad if you write down notes when he tells you to and you do them in class. there is also two essays and a film pitch. not too much work.
This was one of the best classes I have taken. He really cares about teaching you about movies and why they were made. We looked at some reasons why films are made and it really makes you think. There are screening notes which are not that hard. There is a final essay but he walks you through it in three parts.
This was a great class. Dr. Brown walks you through some very interesting film movements and theories. I learned more in this class than I thought was possible in 7 weeks. There are little in-class writings you do and a finalnessay. Take good notes on what you want to choose for the final essay. No exams.
Loved his energy and passion in the class. He really makes you want to learn more about movies. The class is not too hard because you have these worksheets and three short essays.
Great Professor who loves film. His lectures keep you awake and he tries his best to get everyone involved. Like others said there are worksheets for every class that he tells you how to answer. There are two short essays and a project where you come up with your own movie. Take him!
Great professor. His lectures keep you awake and he tries his best to get everyone involved. Like others said there are worksheets for every class that he tells you how to answer. There are two short essays and a project where you come up with your own movie. Take him!
Dont take if you need an easy class. 2 writing assignments due each week and a tough grader.
Professor Brown lectures the entire class. 2 papers are due every week, one being an essay, the other being 7-10 questions about a movie assigned for the week. Harsh grader if you're not good at writing essays. Wouldn't recommend it for people looking for an easy A.
This was a good class and the professor really shows his love for film. I came into the class wanting to watch movies and now I love really watching movies. There are worksheets you do each week that are not hard if you listen to when he tells you to write stuff down. A journal for each week (not bad). Two essays and a creative writing.
This was the best class I have taken so far because it prepares you for the film degree. The class is not hard with discussions each week and a short essay. There is a final essay that makes you decide your plan of how you are going to do everything required for the program portfolio. He really cares and shows it. Take him.
Class was not hard but you got to do the work. Hardest part was getting through a couple of the movies. Film worksheets aren't bad bc he tells you how to do it. You choose your movie for the essays. Film pitch thing was fun and not hard. Take him.
Great class and professor! Discussions each week that are about you and a final essay about your portfolio. It is not a hard class but he teaches you what it takes to be successful in film.
Took him for 2 classes this semester. Great teacher + homework is easy if you just take notes when he tells you to. He'll help you until you're comfortable + understand the material.
He really loves movies and it shows in his teaching. I returned to college after taking a break and this was one of my first classes back. His passion really made me want to learn again. Worksheets are not hard if you take notes. Essays are easy if you pick a film you like. Take his advice and you will do well.
Let's face it no one wants to take this class but he makes it fun and worth your time. He has lectures each week and tries to get people to talk. There are a few quizzes and some other assignments that are easy. Don't miss a deadline because he doesn't take late assignments keep up and the class is easy.
Took his online zoom course and it was good. You learn about movies and get to watch one a week. The three assignments are a film review, film idea and final essay. There is also worksheets each week. Not tough but take notes you will need them for the assignments. He answers emails pretty fast too so that is good.
I do not what his intention is with being a tough grader. He excepts everyone to be at the same film-savvy-level that he is at. Then he grades tough? Honestly, if you do not understand the works behind film I would NOT take him. Kind of disappointed I got stuck with him:(
One of the best classes I had at NOVA. He walks you through the assignments and doesn't make it hard. If you do the homework and watch the movies you will do great. Homework is easy but you have to turn it in on time because he doesn't take late stuff.
This was a good class and not too hard. There are worksheets and short journals. Two essays that are not tough. You also talk about a movie idea. Take notes cause he moves fast.
Dr B has a way of making you feel like you understand films more than you think you do. He tries to make the assignments fun but they can be hard if you dont write it down. the worksheets take time but you watch a movie a week & learn about some way of making movies.2 essays & come up with your movie idea. Not hard.
Easy class with a completely laid back teacher that talks about being an artist.Good for arts majors maybe not other majors. There are few quizzes and writing. Nothing too hard.
Took this class online and he talks about what you need to get into film and the film program. Class isnt hard cause it is discussions and an essay where you talk about what you are going to do. Be there cause he takes attendance.
Good class where you watch movies. Assignments aren't too hard. If you have trouble ask him. Writings every week.
No doubt he knows his stuff. Class wasn't hard but goes fast. One essay that he gives in 2 parts. Questions on movies each week.
This is one of my last classes before I graduate with my film degree. It is a good class because he talks you through everything. You watch a movie each week and talk about it as a class. He has online discussions and a final essay. Not a hard grader but you need to make sure you aren't late because he has a strict no late policy.
His course was extremely difficult for me. No matter how hard I tried on the weekly screening notes I always received a harsh grade. And for this week's homework on top of the 4 hr in-class lecture we were assigned a 1.5 hr recorded lecture, 1.5 hr youtube video, and 2 hr movie on top of worksheets to follow them. Be prepared for tons of work.
Such an amazing professor!! He cares for his students, he is very comic. I definitely recommend him.
Good professor who teaches you about the arts program. I am in graphic design so I cant take another class with him but I would if I could. Really helps you understand what you need to do in the arts.
Great professor! Loved how he tried to get us all talking and networking. Wish we were not through zoom. There are discussions and a few assignments. Nothing too bad but all helpful.
Great class. You do watch alot of movies and some are good and some are ok. It is worth it. He teaches you about camera sound and writing. The movie idea.was fun to. Only thing is I should have picked a movie that wasn't in theater for the first paper cause he makes you write about it again.
Great class and professor to take for portfolio! The assignments are discussions each week which were a breeze. There is a short essay where you write about film studies and you have to meet with your advisor. The end is an essay but it isn't hard either bc he tells you what to write.
Dr. Brown is great! This was my first film class and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. He is an amazing lecturer keeps the class interesting. Yhe class was made up of very few assignments/points.
Good class. He talks alot but its OK. Class isnt too hard. Glad I took it. Worksheets and essays
This was a class I didn't want to take but had to for my PHT degree. It ended up great. There are quizzes and assignments but nothing to hard. The best part of the class is going to class because he makes everyone talk and get going.
This is not a hard class and he makes it fun. Discussions and worksheets. Final essay is not bad because he makes you work on it all semester. You watch a movie a week and some are ok and some are great.
Dr. Brown is very knowledgeable when it comes to film. It seems like he watches every film ever made. He is very engaging and always tries to get you to see movies in a different way. If you are a decent writer and go to class you will do well. The class is laid back. I would take him again!
This was one of the most memorable classes I took for this semester. The films he shows are pretty lengthy but some were interesting. It would be good if they were a bit more challenging. He has you focus on techniques and how they are used in movies. Overall, he takes the study of film very seriously and tries his best to get the class talking.
Super easy class but with good info on your major. Assignments happen every week but nothing too bad. Just don't be late cause he doesn't late work.
He is one of the best professors on the Woodbridge campus... He gives you the correct info about your major, lectures with him are funny, he cares about the students and he is really flexible. You just gotta attend to class, listen to what he says and laugh at his jokes.
Good professor and class. There is a final essay but he has you do it in parts over the semester. In class he has lectures and you watch movies. Nothing too hard but it moves fast. Can be hard to catch up if yoy miss something.
Brown was the best professor I had at NOVA and this was one of my favorite classes. He teaches about film and theories then he shows you movies that connect with it. There is a final paper but he helps you do it throughout the class. I learned so much in that class and didn't think I would because I took the other film studies classes.
Good summer class but it goes fast. Make sure to watch the due date because they come fast. There are short writings and workshetts but nothing too tough.
Mr. Brown is great! I am an art major or I would take more classes with him. He talks about being an artist in a way that made me sure I am in the right major. Class is not hard but there are 1-2 assignments each week. Mostly these are quizzes or worksheets.
Great class! I took a short class so it was all in 7 weeks but I wish it was longer because it was really interesting. He assigns movies each week and some were really good but others were not as good. He has you do a worksheet each week and write something about the readings. The final essay wasn't bad because he makes you do it in 3 parts.
This was a fun class. He has three assignments you do outside of class but nothing too hard. We came up with movie ideas and we wrote about two other movies. He has you do in class stuff but you do it while watching movies. I didn't like some of the old movies but he showed new ones too and that was good. Some were ok.
This was such an engaging class! The lectures are really heavy on the notes but easy to follow because he constantly pauses to ask for questions. Just make sure you ask because it took awhile for people to get used to not just be silent. We had one final essay that we worked on for the entire course and small writing each week.
Just finished the class. Its great! I learned more about films in 7 weeks than I thought I would. I took the class as an elective to get to graduation. Prof Brown knows film & it shows when he talks about it. I am not a film major but it was fun & I would definitely take more if I had to take other movie classes. He has no exams or quizzes.
Good class that wasn't roo hard. He has you watch a movie each week and you fill out a sheet. You have two essays in the class on the same movie. There was a movie idea thing that I didn't like because people had boring film ideas. Not his fault but he makes everyone talk about their films and some were just bad.
This class was easy but good because he tells you what you need for the film programs portfolio and he has just usual discussions and a couple of other assignments but it was easy because he tells you what to you need to do
Awful
Love the class. You learn alot in a short amount of time. Just watch the deadlines because he doesnt take late work. I learned the hard way but its all good.
I took him for two classes this semester and this one was the easiest. There are quizzes but they are open book and online. There are a few other assignments that you do about yourself and your future jobs. He talks in class about the Arts. It was a good class that just went by fast. Just be there every time because he takes off points if you dont.
he was difficult. def wound not take again
I wish he picked more new movies or Star Wars. He doesn't show any Anime either. The assignments weren't bad and he grades pretty easy for the most part. Wish we had more time to work on some of the big assignments but the class is short.
Since you have to take the class then take it from him.The quizzes are easy bc they are open book and the assignments are not hard. He talks alot about everything in class and makes it go by fast. He gives attendance points so go to class bc he takes role.
Is not accepting of films outside his capacity of understanding.
Great class and he really cares about movies. I liked the projects and really liked the movie pitch one.
This was my second class with him for the semester. Easy class with little assignments each week. Nothing hard. He spends most of the class time talking about the arts programs. It was good to get to know some others in the program. I'd say take it with him if you have to take it.
I dreaded taking this class because I thought it would be hard but it was great! He teaches about different films and makes theory easy to understand. Discussions each week and a final paper.
This was my second time taking this class because I took it with another teacher before and it was terrible with her. He made it fun and not hard. He had questions each week which weren't hard and an essay. No tests so that was good
Brown is the best! He talks about landing a job and getting into film schools. He has you do stuff for your portfolio. Not hard but he makes you think about how to do it.
This was my last class at nova I think I had every film prof they have but I took him for the 1st time with this class. Class isnt hard but he makes you prepare for transferring or work. I really liked where we wrote about us as filmmakers and i liked the reel he had us make. Now i am off to another school but feel good about being ready.
He is a good teacher. Maybe choose newer movies because the old and foreign ones are boring sometimes. He talks about the movies and theories and you have online discussions and an essay.
great professor and class. had to take it for the last semester and liked it overall.
He really pushes you but he cares. I stayed after class to talk films almost every class. He talked either a group of us for an hour or more each time. I am older than probably other students but I really liked how engaged he was in the classes.
This was my favorite class all summer or maybe at NOVA.I am not a film major but it made me want to be one. He is energetic and not just reading stuff off the screen or playing long videos from YouTube. There are these notes that he has you do on the movies but they arent too hard because he tells you what to look for.Good class and great teacher.
Good class and not too hard. Movies were just ok.
Dr Brown is the best! He walks you thru the portfolio and how to complete it for the program for transfer or getting a job. No hard assignments bc it is discussions each week with one little essay and a plan essay at the end.
Took this as a last elective and it was fun. He rips apart movies and makes you think about them hard. I liked his stories. He makes you go to class because you do the notes on the assignments he has. Assignments were tough at first but got easier because I knew how to do it.
I don't recommend CST 151. I took it because I like movies, but it was more stressful than my Math and Science classes. Professor Brown claims he has no strict writing rules, but he has high expectations. The final paper standards were thesis-like. Honestly, this class made me dislike movies. If you're not a film major, try REL 100 or ART 100.
Easiest class I have taken so far. Everything is open book and very few quizzes. He has an activity every class so make sure you go and do whatever he has for you that day. I liked that he taught us about our art degrees and told us how to do it for the next two years. Since you have to take the class take it with him.
Professor Brown's CST151 is a fun, fast-paced class. The movie projects are engaging, and Unstuck AI helped me prep for the assignments. While picky on film choices, he makes the subject matter enjoyable. Definitely take it as an elective!
Good teacher, enjoyable lectures, but if you're expecting an easy class don't take him. He's an incredibly strict grader. Wish the reviews told me that. Maybe it'd be better if we were in person or had more time. The feedback he gives is fine, but doesn't elaborate on some details. But if you're fine with the challenge, I'd suggest him.
hes probably good at other classes. just not this one, chill guy but crazy insane grader. pretty sure everyone is taking this just for credit. says netflix is required but we haven't watched a sine movie on there. waste of my money and time.
Super easy class because he tells you what to write and goes over all the questions for the assignments. Wish I could take another class with him but films not my major.
Good class but moves fast. I had some trouble at first getting used to watching a movie a week but it was pretty easy once I figured out time to work it out. His worksheets have like 7 questions and his journals and essays are easy. I agree with others about him being a chill prof
Spends time talking about movies. I liked some of the movies but a couple were old and I don't like old stuff. Wish he made us watch terrifier or something better than some noir. Assignments were a breeze and he seems to really like movies and his students. I'd take him again.
This was my final class at NOVA and I have had a few with Dr. Brown. He has been amazing as a mentor and teacher. The class teaches you everything you need to make a portfolio for transfer or that is what I made it for and now I have been accepted to where I wanted to go (SCAD) with a scholarship! This was because of my portfolio in the class.
Easy class for most of it. Little worksheets with like 7 or 8 questions each class. He has three bigger projects but those are easy. Wish we watched some anime though but he doesn't seem to like it.
This was good for a Zoom class because he lectures about the assignments. He has you watch films for free through Tuby. There is extra credit. But he doesn't take late work.
If you're taking this class to get an easy A. This is not the class for you, I wish I read the reviews more carefully than I did. He is a super tough grader and if you aren't there for 100% of the lecture, you won't get any credit for it at all. If you aren't super passionate about film I'd pick a different professor because this is not the one 4 u
Very passionate about teaching and film. Course was a breeze with the worksheets and journals. He talks about movies that makes them interesting and made me think about them totally differently.
Easy class and chill professor.
Class: 7-week course through ZOOM. A few journals, not weekly. Screening Notes: 6-7 questions on the weekly movie, but he describes what he's looking for though. Work/grading criteria: A little difficult but if you don't understand he simplifies it until you do. Introductory film review and final essay are based on the SAME FILM of YOUR CHOOSING.
Class was easy and pretty laid back. There is a movie to watch each week and an essay at the end. I thought the movies were okay but maybe ask him to choose different ones.
He is strict about the syllabus; if you use other resources, you will receive a zero. I took a seven-week Zoom class and withdrew with a grade penalty because of his tough grading. If you are taking this course as an elective, it is better to choose another one.
Took this as a zoom class and it wasnt hard but he wants you to backup all your answers on his worksheets with scenes from the movies he assigned. The journals arent too tough because he has lectrues you can watch.
Easy class with a discussion each week. He has two short papers.
He made the class so easy because he broke down all of the questions on the assignments. The film review he has is easy but make sure you choose a good one because he has you watch it again in the class. The movie pitch thing was good too. The essay at the end was pretty easy bc he makes you talk about 3 things you choose. He dont take late work.
Class was easy. Worksheets with 7 questions each week and maybe 3 short writings. A review movie idea and essay. He talks alot in his lectures.
His lectures are a bit long but interesting. I liked that he takes you through different parts of film history and film making. The things he calls screening notes are 7 questions not too hard because he tells you basically what to write. I think there was 1 or 2 journals. You do a film review and come up with a movie idea and write a long essay.
Prof. B is very knowledgeable and passionate about film. Lectures were easy to follow. Lots of writing - an assignment may list 7 questions but each question has 3 questions to it. Overall good class.
Knows his stuff and he does mentor you in the class. I took this class from another professor and it did not give me as much information as he did. I actually feel ready to complete my film degree. The discussions are easy and he has a final essay which is a plan you create for your degree.
Easy class no hard assignments. He talks alot during class it all seems to be stuff we need to know. There are quizzes short assignments but nothing that was too hard bc its open book.
Class was good. He is ok as teacher. Movies with assignments each week and an esaay.
Easiest class I took. He shows movies most weeks with a lecture at the beginning. Then he has you fill out these sheets that arent too hard but I had to go up and ask him questions when I did it. There are three assignments that you dont do in class bu they were pretty easy too. Overall recommend.
This was a great class! I have taken some of the studies classes with other film teachers and it was hit or miss. His class was fun and easy. He gives you a sheet each week and makes you watch a movie. Then he has a essay that you work on throughout the class and he guides you. He lectures but he wants you to talk but you don't need to.
Loved the class because he makes you look at film in a world context. This was my second semester at NOVA and my second film studies class. It was easy but it also made me think and see movies in a whole other way.
I loved this class! He is awesome and it was a really interesting and fun class. He seems to know alot about movies and movie history. He makes learning film a lot less boring. He had these worksheets that he calls screening notes to complete. They were not tough with only 7 questions each on the film he has us watch.
Dr. Brown's Intro to Film class made me enjoy movies. Growing up, I never really liked watching movies, but his passion and energy made me have so much fun. This was a class I never wanted to take, and now, I'd take it all over again. I highly recommend him if you like professors who love what they teach.
Dr. Brown made me actually like watching movies. Growing up, I never liked watching them, but his passion and energy made me excited to see what film we would talk about next. I never wanted to take this class, and now I want to take it all over again. I highly recommend Dr. Brown to anyone who enjoys professors who love what they teach.
This was one of my last classes in the film program. I waited to take him and I wish I didn't. Dr. Brown has so much knowledge about film that I wish the class was longer than 8 weeks. The assignments were easy but he is pretty strict on deadlines. I guess that's ok but just know that going in.
I really enjoyed this class. He encouraged us to talk and give our own thoughts on movies. I liked how it wasn't just his opinion that mattered but that we were all invited to talk. The homework was easy because he assigns a film online that you watch and he tells you what to look out for. He has an essay that he breaks up so that made it easy too.
Dr Brown was my favorite professor for the semester. The course is a little lecture heavy but everything he talks about it interesting. He kept trying to get everyone to talk but didn't. His class was pretty easy with course discussions each week and a paper which he has three parts of throughout the semester.
Pretty easy class with little sheets he has you complete on a movie a week. A few of the movies were OK but some were old and boring. Easy A but just be ready to watch some movies that are old and some are new.
Good class with watching movies. He grades easy but strict on deadlines.
Mr Brown is friendly, he is a nice person, but his grading is ridiculous. Almost all of my perfectly fine free response answers and essays got from 30 - 50%, because every time I get a question 95% right, it is a 50%, and 70% right is a 0%. FYI, if you turn in a weekly assignment 10 minutes late, it is a 0%, with no retakes or extra credit options.
Make sure your clock is synched because It doesn't matter if you are 1 min late in submitting an assignment, it's a zero. he makes a joke about how you don't have to write a novel, but that is a lie because if your work is less than 5 pages you'll get a 25%. Misleading and very tough grader. I would have enjoyed the class if not for his scoring
This was a great class that I wish I would have taken earlier in my degree. He talks about jobs you can get and where you can go after graduation. He goes over what to do for your final portfolio. He also always stuck around afterward to answer all of the questions I had or just to talk movies with some of us!
I absolutely loved this class! He talks about everything that goes into making a movie with the history of how it came to be. He is a fairly easy grader when it comes to assignments. The sheets he has each week have seven questions and the journals are short prompts. I liked the film pitch the most! Two other essays that weren't bad either.
I had fun in this class. He knows alot about film and really tried to get the class talking. This is my first semester at NOVA and I hope my teachers are all like Dr. Brown. He also gave extra credit!
This was my first film class at NOVA and I loved it! He talks about everything that goes into making a movie and the history of it. I am glad I took this while taking my production class because they talk about many of the same things at the same time.
My favorite class this semester. Doctor Brown really goes into detail about film and talks about some interesting things about film. I liked that we looked at different films on different topics. His worksheets are easy because he tells you how to answer the questions. Essays were fun and easy.
Easy class but good and he talked about the portfolio.
Dr. Brown is one of my favorite teachers for the semester! This was my first film class and I knew I made a great choice from day 1. The assignments were easy but he wants you to take notes to complete the sheets he gives you. I thought the movie pitch assignment was so much fun and we talked about casting too!
Misleading about assignments. He'll say that we don't have to write much, but he isn't transparent about what he's actually looking for. The deadlines are extremely strict, and assignments only allow one attempt, which I can manage, but it still adds pressure. He tries to present himself as unbiased, but his grading and feedback show otherwise.
Great content and knowledgeable professor, but expectations are often only said aloud, not written. No slides or recordings, so missing a class leaves you lost. Grading is tough and vague. Hard for ADHD students since key details aren't posted. Interesting class, but frustrating structure.
I found this to be one of my easiest classes this semester. Not sure why anyone would think anything else. He spends time maybe too much going over the questions of the assignment. I missed a class but I went to his office hours and he walked me through it. I also found some stuff in the readings when I didnt have notes.
This is a very easy and fun class. I liked some of the movies he makes you watch and the assignments were not hard. He talks about movies alot tho.
Great class! The assignments are pretty easy because you do most of them in class. He has two or three things you do outside of class and one of those is the final essay. I liked most of the films and he showed us a scyfy one.
I took two classes with Dr Brown for this semester and both were great! This one is where he talks about film and goes into some interesting history. I loved when we talked about noir! The homework is pretty easy and he doesn't grade hard on the essay.
Great class. Just finished the final paper and I thought this class was a breeze but really interesting. There are discussion boards each week and he talks about a different art area of film. He assigns films but I didn't watch all of them.
This was a good class. I guess if you don't like movies don't take it because he makes us watch one a week. Questions were easy and the three essays were not tough either.
Dr. Brown was my favorite professor this semester. He is nothing but a kind man and I have so much respect for him. I am a cinema major, but he's most likely the optimal professor for even those that have no clue about anything from the artform. His screenings are fun, his lectures are entertaining, and the atmosphere is excellent. Highly recommend
