This teacher is intense! Be prepared to join an interdimensional boot camp the first day of class. . .(his words. . .and it's true).
If you have no life outside of his class, and enjoy gluing 400 toothpicks together for the first project's practice versions.. go for it. (I didn't have the time.. and dropped after the first week)
be ready for an intense semester!
intense- not like the other crip courses floating around the department
this teacher is mean and he asks too much for a beginning class. It's a basic class, not an advanced class. Get over it ! Mr. Cantely!
I'm in his class right now. He doesn't answer my questions very well, and for a lot of things that should be easy he gives brief, confusing statements. I asked for an example once and he said he just gave one, I don't think he listened to my question. :( He asks for too much from beginners.
His class is really overwhelming, but I think its really helpful. He's not that bad he's just a little arrogant. I wouldn't take him if you have a really hard semester, or if you need an easy A. I don't think he gives A's.

the first project was overwhelming! i didnt learn much from the class except how to keep the projects together. his work is more tedious and time consuming than difficult. Also he doesnt provide the best explainations of how we can actually apply what we've learned in class into the real world.
bad teacher
he is really really bad, DOn't take this class, take another teacher
Awful man. Picky beyond good reason. Overdemanding with little help given.
It's the toughtest class I've ever taken, but if you want to learn architectural dynamics from someone who knows what they're talking about and make your brain grow, take him.
I will never take a class ever again without checking out the teacher first. This class became my nightmare. He's anal retentive, unsensitive, arrogant, and over demanding. Seriously, what is he compensating for? If your creative minded don't take this class!!!!!!! It will torture you!
This teacher knows a lot about the subject, but is a real ass. He constantly puts the students down and makes you feel stupid. A lot of work, not so much as hard, but takes a lot of time. Not helpful at all. You could work your ass off in the class and still do bad. If you want a class were the teacher makes you feel stupid take this class.
Hard? Yes. Picky? Yes. Looking for an easy way out? Take a different teacher! He does warn you beforehand: he calls it 3D boot camp. I wouldnt say don't take him, just pay alot of attention, work hard, and pace yourself. He gives a lot of work, but also a lot of time. Just dont procrastinate, or you'll be screwd! He is not impossible, I got an A.

VERY difficult class which requires A LOT of time and supplies. I dont really know what i learned from it all either...
the class was hard not because of the subject matter but the teacher. he constantly changed his mind on what he thought about your project, would never help you improve. I can understand a hard class, but this was unreasonable. he has no respect for students who want a challenge and want to learn. i worked hard for that class and he didnt respect my project, it came back broken.
How is this guy a professor. I've had better high school teachers!
What a bunch of whiners and cry-babies! Wake up. Real world stuff. Real world deadlines and expectations. Will mommy come work for you when reality gets too hard? great designer, HARD-ass class, but you actually LEARN, as opposed to "let's PLAY art" in other classes.
he is way hard. you learn lots i gues, but its way hard. i wont remember/use most of what i learned. if you take it, be ready for a ton of work. i mean a butt load
i actually like this teacher. if you don't take the time to get to know him he can be a real dick. but i ask him questions and i talk alot and embarrass myself in class so i don't really think he's a hard ass like others think. i think i'm getting an A but it's been a challenge. after this current project i don't know if that A will stay! (@_@) plus he looks like liam neeson. that can't hurt.
The class is awesome. It's a lot of supplies, and a lot of time but if you manage your time well then it should be easy. The concepts portrayed are hard to find but when you do it all becomes clear. People, you have to realize in life there are deadlines and you are responsible for your actions. Finally a teacher who doesn’t baby people.
I adored this class, and Bryan Cantley is one of the greatest teachers on Earth. Expect a TON of work, headaches, and also expect to learn more than you ever have in one class. If you go the extra 10 miles, challenge yourself, and lose your fear, you will be blessed with one of the best learning experiences of your life. Tip: don't whine; WORK.
Tough as hell class, but if you actually want to learn something, expand your mind, and learn what it takes to make it in the real world than take this class. Don't screw around and you'll find out that he's not as tough as you thought he might be. If you just wanna take an art class to jerk your time away for easy credits, don't take this class.
The Easiest class at CSUF; period.
i have no clues in the beginning but the class starts to make sense to me in the end..this class is very tired because you gonna learn so much. And, in fact, you gonna work on the project as good and as fast as to finish as you can..hard class but nice teacher
He has you make really interesting projects, but he doesn't quite tell you everything. For instance, when he tells you the MINIMUM of something, it means that gets you a C. However, he fails to tell you this until it's too late. Also, keep all your materials that you use for a certain project, since you'll probably need to work on it again.
Nice projects & HARD! BUT HE MAKES U LEARN! PLUS ITS KINDA FUN ^^
Man can this guy be quite intimidating. There's a ton of work to be done, but it really is worth it. You learn a lot from this class and as long as you stick to it, you can achieve so much. Plus, it's fun and he's a pretty cool guy.
I think he is a very cool guy, he just seems very intimadating in the beginning but he is cool. But his projects are very time consuming. There not hard but you just have to not procrasinate and do the work. If you don't like to work, this is not the class for you. but you will learn in his class. he is a fair grader also you get the grade you dese
he is a very good teacher, but if you notice, he does not record his grades. He is pretty smart and can hold good conversation. You should take him because he is challenging and makes you earn your grade.
DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM. the projects look cool, but his standards and guidelines are completely ridiculous. he makes you feel stupid, and constantly reminded us how his other classes were better. this is a basic lower-level art class that shouldn't require such absurdly anal demands. he is cool sometimes, but the cons outweight the pros hundredfold.
Keep in mind that some professors leave comments on here to make them sound better. DO NOT EVEN THINK OF TAKING THIS CLASS!! There is an average of 30 hours a week of work. THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT TAKES 3 DAYS TO COMPLETE AND IS DUE IN A WEEK. Class work seemed very over obsessive. There is a difference between a difficult and an unrealistic class.
not an easy class but for sure a good class. he takes comes off very intimidating but when actually grading assignments he looks for quality of work, not so much the tiny aspects he "requires". he made a very good point that if a prereq class should be difficult because if you cant get through this you shoudnt be able to get through upper divisi
pretty much says what he does from the beginning.... super hard.. but WOW you actually LEARN... not the tyipcal crip course for sure... amzing work coming outta the class!
the hardest class you will EVER take at CSUF, or anywhere for that matter
If u are only taking one class in a semester, you can take cantley's class.
Everyone says his class is a nightmare. Its hard but his emphasis is learning time management as well as project quality. I'm having a hard time in his class right now but I feel I'm learning more about composition than I would if I were being babied into art concepts like some teachers tend to do. Take this if you want a challenge and to learn.
Provide unclear direction of what he wanted. Often, changing his mind about how he wants things. It is hard to know clearly what is good and not in his class.
Starting student attendence=a little over 25 End=less than 15. Will spend time and money into this class. Go to office hours. Ask questions. Do not take for GE.
After completing the first terrible project that took up all of my time and effort doing, I got a D. Maybe I didn't understand it, but he is not clear and he expects you to have so much time available to work on these projects. I dropped the class after that. Now everyone who stayed told me I was smart for dropping.
Cantley's instructions are to the point and clear. He expects your greatest effort, and he see's that. Even though I ended up with a C, I felt like I succeeded because I completed his course. It is not easy, I do not recommend this class if it is for a G.E. However, he stressed time management and that is what I took with me after taking this class
I took this class last fall and boy was it hard and time consuming. These are the 2 factors any student would happily evade. If you want a challenge, take this professor. It's no easy walk. But, it's worth your time if you persevere and work hard enough. Tips: Start projects ASAP; Ask a TON of questions; Don't activate centers & corners; Coffee.
It's true - this class is extremely challenging and very time consuming. He warns students of this on the first day of class. If you are looking for an 'easy A'- you won't find it here. Cantley really does care about his students and wants them to succeed. Try talking to him. He's actually very cool with a great sense of humor. Not at all scary:)
Hard class, awesome teacher.
Very hard class, but you learn a lot and get to do some pretty amazing projects. You will spend the majority of your week working on the projects.
Yeah, his class is alot of work, you spend alot of money on supplies and materials. But if you go to class and pay attention you'll be ok. There's alot of principles you'll have to remember, like someone said "Don't activate corners & centers." I passed with a good grade also because I did his 3 page single-spaced paper at the end.
do NOT take this class if u have little time on ur hand~ his projects r devil and if u'r late on project due day, ur doomed~ and his projects are HUGE~ not recommend for GE~
Do not take his class if you don't have a lot of extra time or if broke lol I spent at least 10 hours a week on the projects. But I got an A so i know its not impossible. Do the extra credit at the end of the semester! Pay close attention to each rule and make sure u dont break any BEFORE class. Dont be late. he lets u out early usually. veddy nice
Hard class but I got an A w/o doing any extra credit. If you're not an art major, DON'T take this him. If you can handle it, I recommend taking this class. Everything else in life will be easy after you pass this class.
I have absolutely no idea why I even took this class. "Hey, let's stick together random bits of wood and other miscellaneous hardware to form questionable 3-D structures, in a stressful environment." That pretty much sums up this pathetic excuse of a class. I don't know how far in the "real world" a pyramid of toothpicks can get you. DO NOT TAKE.
This class is an insane amount of work. He doesn't care about your other classes, jobs, friends, life, etc. All that matters to him is that you do you work and you do it right. Not my favorite. I ended up dropping.
This class is extremely tough and I really had trouble keeping up with his high demands. I spent over $400 on just materials alone and countless sleepless nights working on his projects. He takes pride about being the toughest teacher on campus. Follow his directions EXACTLY or you will get a bad grade in this class.
A lot of blood, sweat, tears and money went into this class. Its the hardest class I've ever had which isn't worth it since it is a lower division art class. I'm not good with creating complex design so I managed to pass with a C+. Great for people who like a challenge in design. Bad for people on a budget and who want actual sleep at night.
Do NOT take this class. He is too strict, his expectations are unrealistic and his standards are impossible. If you manage to pass it will not be worth the effort for basic art GE.
Everything here is true..but to pass the class, just TRY. Go to his office hours as many times as you can. ask ask ASK questions!! He'll notice. I got a lot of low grades but I took advantage of his office hrs and bugged him with questions and passed, hah! Plus, don't hate him, he's a nice guy. Expect to make this class a priority though!
He is very intimidating at first, but he is okay after awhile. He has a tendency to be a little unclear don't be afraid to email and ask questions, that will help you a lot!! If you are not interested in art DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. But I would still only take this class if you have time, money, and your an art major.
Like everyone else has already said, this class is EXTREMELY difficult. If you are not an art major I would definitely recommend taking another class. That being said, if you put forth the effort, you are going to learn a lot. He is straightforward and can be intimidating, but is very helpful and will give you good advice if you work hard.
This class is nothing short of a challenge, but it can be rewarding to know you are one of the few who actually sticks around to the end. Asking questions and being innovative are what will help you pass. This class will become your priority above everything so if you cannot make the commitment then you cannot expect to pass.
Three important words: Creative problem solving.
This class is not one you can expect to pass if you are lazy. You better be prepared to give up all of your free time working on the projects, because this class will take 3 times as much of your time as any other. But, if you pay really close attention to the instructions (every detail is important!), and work hard you will earn a good grade.
Bryan is intimidating at first, and yes his class is the hardest class I have ever taken in my college life, but I learned more than most classes combined. Be prepared to lose you social life and your sanity, but as far as the professor he does care about his students, especially if you take the initiative to care for his class.
Bryan is a good teacher if you pay attention, and bother to do the work. BUT, it is also the hardest class you will ever take, and you have to be prepared to give up all your free time and then some. If you won't be able to do that, don't take his class, it is not worth it. If you have to, make sure that your other classes are easy that semester.
If you have the time and money, and Murphy's Law does not apply to you, then you have a shot at passing this class.
At the beginning we had a full class, now I maybe see 10 these days. I'm learning so much from this class, it makes my 2d design class look like a joke bc the teacher there treats it like an ART101 class and babies everyone. It definitely weeds out those who see art as a hobby vs those who treat art as a passion and know how expensive it can be.
This guy is great. His class is not extremely difficult if you follow directions. Most of the people had dropped out by the end of the semester but I had little difficulty. It IS a lot of work though so expect to do up to 20 hours of homework in the first 3-4 weeks. If you dont have the time dont take the class.
I know this has been said many times previously, but his expectations are completely unrealistic for a student who is taking 12+ units. The sad part is he knows the struggles of his student's yet he doesn't care/won't try to work with you. I THOUGHT that if I stayed in the class that I would learn a lot. I was wrong .
Get out while you still can.
Great professor, I recommend this class to all students! The class is VERY time consuming and hard so do take precaution on your class load and studio classes. Involves a lot of critical thinking, designing and small scale model building. Be on time, don't be frightened, and manage your time wisely, you will learn more than just 3D design =)
Challenging? Yes. Not for complainers? Yes. Incredible learning experience? Yes. Not a lot of spare time? Depends. Goid is news is he's cutting the amount of work in less than half from now on... Stool a brilliant teacher, now with less work!
Don't be a crybaby, show up to class on time, and ASK QUESTIONS. If you don't this class will be harder than it needs to be. I thought Bryan was an awesome teacher and it's a shame he has to lighten up the coursework. Challenge yourself when you can because the challenges will strengthen your work ethic and your general skill as a designer.
Bryan is an amazing professor. This was his first semester with his adjusted syllabus. There are 3 projects. He gives amazing feed back and I really enjoy his sense of humor. I don't know how his previous class was but I LOVED this one. I would definitely recommend him to anyone :)
Dosen't give clear instructions and will fail you despite your best efforts. Don't take the class with him, go find it at a community college if you have to.
It's certainly not an easy class. After two bad project grades, I thought I would fail. But I kept at it, showed up even when we didn't have to, and asked questions. I ended up with a B+. He's not the clearest, so I strongly suggest you ask questions when you have them. If you show that you're trying to understand and pass, he's willing to help.
Cantley is a love-hate person. Personally? I love him. If you are passionate about art and you ask questions, he's there for you. He challenges you to add a narrative to your pieces, push you, and make you think. He's really lenient on attendance, because he's a busy person &understands you are too, he does care. His new curriculum rules. Fun class
Bryan is by far an amazing teacher, but don't expect him to be easy on you if you're going to mess around in class. Freshmen, this is a wake up call class. Bryan gives it to you straight in a real work design environment. Go to class, pay attention, listen to directions, this class is worth the work for those willing to become better designers.
I absolutely loved the 3D design class. I learned a lot during and was pushed outside of my comfort zone in a way that really helped me to grow during the semester. Yes, you will be expected to pay attention and work hard. You'll do well in the class as long as you are there and put a genuine effort into your work.
When he assigns a project, he wants you to pay attention to the details. If you give him a sketch of what you want to do, it needs to look like it (angles, proportions). Most ppl here think they can put stuff together and if it doesn't work, it's OK cause they're artists. If so, don't take this class. I personally LOVED every second of his class!!
I had him for 2D design and loved him so much I took his 3D Design class. If you do not attend class and work during class time you WILL fall behind. Expect out of class work if you want an A in the class. Easy grader if you meet requirements. Makes you think outside the box. 3 Projects, final is easy so you can have time to study for other classes
He challenges you as an artist. He gives you great feedback and expects you to work outside of class for projects, which prepares you for a future art career. Just work hard and participate in class and you'll do fine.
Very tough professor, he doesn't give good instructions (which is bad considering you only get 3 projects a semester). He's also gone a lot of the time, usually on business trips or gets sick (he gets sick a lot). I wouldn't take his course again.
Bryan is a great professor, but stuck in 100 level classes. In my opinion, he's awesome but needs to have higher level classes. His projects aren't THAT difficult, it's just making sure you meet every little random criteria that's difficult. I believe his class would run a lot smoother if he were given higher level students.
Professor if terrible! Does not care about his students. grades terribly , and three assignments a semester doesnt help.
proffered is tough grader. class is okay but grading it terrible. professor is not very nice.
Not really available outside of class.
I was told he was super easy. He tells you at the beginning of the semester that itll be hard to not get an A in his class, but unless you have a large amount of money on you and can adapt to his strict grading scale, youll probably have to do a redo. Very intimidating, very challenging. Personally, I wouldnt take him again.
Awsome proffeser. Really makes you think outside the box, and not only pushes you but teaches you to push yourself. Projects may seem difcult but if you put enough time into them to understand the requirements you'll be more than fine, and you have quite the amount of time for each project.
One of my best professors! From his projects t gave me new ideas and ways to make and do things personally. However, the projects do take time and when given time to do it in class take it because with that, you might still need to work on it at home. It's fun and you only have 3 projects.
You are definitely going to have to work for your grade in this class. His grading criteria is strict. However, if you constantly check in with him it'll be tough to get anything less than a B. 3 projects throughout the semester. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE DIFFICULTY AND LEAVE THE PROJECTS FOR LAST MINUTE. You can rework them for the final though. :)
I actually had him for both 2D and 3D and in my opinion he is one of the best professors I had. For 2d he gives 3 projects and each project progressively gets more tough. For 3D I had him spring semester but the whole pandemic hit and it changed everything. either way I personally think he is good at what he does but he does make you for it.
I had Cantley for 2D and 3D which I enjoyed whole heartedly. He seems intimidating at first, but if you keep talking to him, you'll warm up to him. A lot of students misconstrue his feedback as being too harsh, but he's just preparing his students for the real world. His criteria is nit picky, but it'll help you in the long run.
3 projects (and 2 easy short papers) expect LOTS of time+effort spent on the last 2 projects (use good quality tape!) LONG critiques, take up all class time! Constantly check-in with him and take his feedback, do this and you'll be fine. Bryan is understanding of any personal situations and willing to offer feedback/help only if you ask to him.
legit the worst professor ive had. his motto is ill take a letter grade off for simply presenting 1 person later or having tech issues (online). rubrics for projects constantly change. didnt learn anything about 3D design. CONSTANTLY SARCASTIC & brags about his salary?? resubmissions are the only positive. i dont get why he has good ratings-0/10
He gives creativity restricting projects with many particular requests/rules which make actually learning about 3D design not the objective of the class. Never answered my emails, hard to communicate with outside of class time. Spent lots of money I didnt have to make hardly useable art pieces. I didnt learn anything, but he couldve been worse.
Side notes. Firstly, the version of Art 104 was around 2013, which was considerably harder then. Secondly, Cantly would always talk about how people who failed his class and b***h about it would be the ones who "didn't make it" in the professional world. Guess what, buddy? I'm a VFX Supervisor now. Wanna compare salaries? I bet I've got you beat.
Worst instructor Ive had in education. Projects are wasteful, expensive, and will end up in the trash by the end of the semester. Incredibly creatively limiting, like adding personal touches? Expect a bad grade if you dont fit his exact vision. I dont recommend to anyone but especially if youre applying for the BFA, he will drop your GPA.
I had to take this class for GE and it was definitely interesting but he's very picky ab projects. He said it would be a low cost class but I spent a lot of money on tape and packing peanuts. As long as you ask him questions ab your project you'll probably be fine. I had to cut a lot of packing peanuts into small pieces which takes a long time.
After taking this class, I decided to change majors. His critiques felt more like a personal attack. The amount of money I had to spend on materials is ridiculous... He said he is making it cost-efficient because we can use stuff lying around our house but also rejects the items a lot of my classmates brought in.
Professor Cantley claimed constantly that his grading criteria was clear, but it really wasn't. He was very hard to talk to and when I reached out for help over email, he never responded.
Favorite professor I had this semester even though I didn't necessarily like the class, because he challenges students and is so available to give feedback. He can be blunt but don't take it personally. He's cool if you show up and do the work, instructions etc are very clear IF you make sure to communicate with him about the projects every week.
Grading literally doesn't make sense at all. He constantly changes the requirements for projects without telling students. He seems like a nice guy but in terms of being a professor, he is incompetent and confusing. (He doesn't respond to emails too) Drop this class if you want a good GPA.
I took him over the pandemic and this class stress me out a lot for perfections and creativity coming from no knowledge in graphic design, it really terrify me and I have to work my ass off to receive an A. It's not impossible but you just need extra attention and details and thrive on
I got through his class with an A- despite my struggles with it, but how he grades and assesses things wasn't always particularly clear at times and him having very exacting expectations did not help matters. Despite him assuring you that the course is low cost, you'll also end up paying for things you won't have much use for after the fact.
I would say to not take this class, but it's a fundamental course and as far as I know, he's the only one who teaches it. Cantley constantly changes his grading criteria and contradicts his own schedules, due dates, and project rubrics.
He took people's phones if they were out, and instructions given in class versus what is in the presentation for the project was different. He is very blunt and straightforward, but his class wasn't anything exciting and I wouldn't certainly come back for more.
Professor's expensive, impractical assignments teach nothing useful. He marked MULTIPLE students down an entire grade for submitting their projects in a non PDF format despite being on time, which is insane. Canvas assignments were just blank in terms of project details. Strictly penalizes tardiness down to the literal second. Take Allison. Please.
As a professor, he is truly absurd for how aggressive he can be during critiques. It's humiliating rather than striving to do better. He doesn't see art as a creative will, only for monetary value. He's hypocritical, inconsistent, & his attendance policy's not great. I suggest you take this class at a community college; save on stress and money.
Bryan is genuinely one of the most realest professors I had the pleasure of taking. In all honesty, he comes off a little scary at first but the critiques he gives are genuine!! Don't be shy just talk to him, get feedback, and make your life 10000% easier. Class can get expensive but just buy in bulk!! Every studio art class is crazzzzy expensive.
He is extremely impressive and is a great artist/architect. The class will push you creatively. Attendance is crucial. Be prepared to spend money which isn't explicitly stated.
He's a good professor and he will push you to expand your creativity and understanding farther to than what it was in the beginning. Cool guy just not very flexible, a family member of mine was in the hospital for a heart attack and my absence wasn't excused. That was the only thing.
Bryan is overall is very nice person and can be funny when its time. However, this class is so tuff I don't not recommend taking his class unless if there are no other professors. It s not the end of the world if you get his class just be prepared because if you are behind it becomes so hard to catch up. /listen to the critique and you'll be fine.
Assignments are toughly graded and they have to be submitted in a very specific way. The criteria for the projects almost felt inconsistent at times. If you can, don't take a class with him. If you do though, he is genuinely a cool guy but not that great of a teacher so good luck.
Professor Cantley runs a tough but engaging class. His project requirements are quite specific, so staying organized and using tools like unstuck study for study prep is key. Overall, if you put in the work, you can get a lot out of his class.
I would not recommend taking his class. He isn't good at teaching or explaining if you ask him a question he doesn't really give you any feedback or ideas on how to improve. Most days are work days even though most of the projects are hard to carry back and forth. His 3D class makes the plastic human sculptures that is around campus.
Look! This professor will grade you on the most stupid thing, like your profile canvas picture, even if it has what he wants, he won't be satisfied. This is a waste of money because aside from paying the tuition but also the cost of supplies adds up a lot.
His criticism is really helpful and gives a lot of information for what will improve your grade. Be prepared to change your work. Attendance and having all your materials every day is extremely important. DO NAWTTT forget your stuff. MAKE SURE YOU PAY ATTENTION. Don't take this class if you can't take criticism or have a victim complex.
you can only miss 3 classes if more then letter grade down no matter circumstances which is unfortunate since many were sick reasons
Not an easy class but if you show up to class and do your project you will do just fine. Don't be afraid to ask him questions, thats the best way to get a good grade.
The key to passing: build a relationship with him. He walks around to answer questions, offers chances for resubmission and e.c. if unsatisfied w/grade, and gives strong critique. If your work, even if not a masterpiece, reflects improvement thru use of his critique, you should be fine grade-wise. Also study rock songs from the 80s- trust.
Listen very closely to the advice he gives you and other students. They're essential to getting a passing grade. It's not just advice to make your work look nicer, but a clear gudeline on getting an A. Be prepared to spend money on supplies and talk to him **every day** to make sure you're doing well. He's chill tho I enojoyed the class lots.
