his class is easy but his lectures are boring. there are two mid-terms and a final exams. to go along with weekly quizzes and discussion questions. so as long as you sit there and listen to his lectures every class, you should be fine. And for the exams he gives out the study guides which are very helpful
Everyday i drive to school without a seat belt on, hoping i would get into a wreck, just so i don't have to come to his class.
Horrible. Dont take him!!! GPA killer. He has homework every week, has discussion questions online. He stutters as he speaks, he has reviews but they r useless. The exams are horrible nothing like his reviews cant teach all he does is read off PP slides. assigned seating and its mandatory that you come to class its a grade. DONT take him.(I studied
This class is horrible, wanted it to be a class that would help my gpa but it hurt it. Tests are unclear and he changes things around on you. Take this class anywhere else.
This prof is ridiculous. He reads from PP, doesn't know how to lecture. He changed his attendance policy 1 month into the semester to mandatory, assigned seating, graded. He gives equal value to all grades (2 tests, 1 final, weekly discussion questions, and chapter quizzes). 100% inflexible with grades. This class WILL lower your GPA. Stay away.
He was straight forward and kept us updated on whats going on. Hard to understand at first but good guy overall.
You MUST buy the e-book. very annoying voice. horrible lecturer. I studied the reviews a week prior to tests and most of the stuff wasn't on there. What you learn on learn smart was never on tests. Mostly what you read in the book (which you have to determine if it is important or not). Studying for my finals now, but making a C. Stay away.
He talks in monotone, which puts you to sleep. Weekly reading quizes (there is a trick to get high grades on this) and discussion assignments. Textbook is online. Attandance is mandatory, 5% of grade. 2 midterms and a final. Don't take his class.
This fall was his first semester teaching so he deserves some respect for that. Yes, his lectures were boring, but he's still learning how to teach. His class is easy as long as you study the review sheets he posts on Blackboard prior to the tests. Tests were straight forward and not tricky. Discussion questions were easy and so were the quizzes.
Honestly I rarely paid attention in class because as everybody else is saying, he really is boring. Read your ebook and you should be fine, I'm not the smartest person (in fact I was in probation this semester) but I managed to make a B. I only read the chapters once and the test seemed really simple and straightforward to me.
Weekly discussions (easy) and quizzes. Lectures are boring and hard to keep your attention bc his voice is annoying! E-book and attendance are mandatory. TRUST! If you read the book you won't know a thing! Pay attention to the videos you watch EVERY class. Hurting my GPA bc I'm expecting a C+.
To get an A in this class: Read your book, take notes in class, and keep up with all assignments. If you read and study the book, do the study guide and notes, you will get an A. Also, try to find a buddy to do the weekly quizzes with. He does need to work on his lecturing, but overall not such a bad guy. I recommend if you recommend if you study.
Honestly not one of the best professors at UH. True, it's was his first semester, but his class was not organized well. He changed the syllabus in the middle of the semester. Tests were somewhat easy if you studied word for word everything: book, ppts, etc. Would not recommend anybody taking any courses taught by him.
Do not take this class. His voice is annoying, and there are assigned seats with mandatory attendance. His slides dont help. He is not a terrible teacher, but if you aren't willing to read the book and decipher what's important on your own you wont succeed.
just study the book and powerpoints and you'll be fine
I read some of the other reviews and many said he is not a good professor. Prof Cole is an excellent professor and is very passionate about politics. He knows his stuff and clearly likes what he does and also wants to get better as he asks for critique during semester. The weekly quizzes are tough but are open book. Good class. Made an A.
everyday while going to class i would not look when crossing the street hoping i would get hit by a car so i wouldnt have to go to his class
Professor Cole was an amazing political science professor. He really knows what he is talking about and very passionate about it. I would recommend him to anyone interested in taking political science. Do yourself a favor and take him.
Wow I just have to say...shame on the people who made comments about rather getting hit by a car or in a car accident than go to this class. Cole was not THAT bad. His voice was a little distracting but everyone's voice is different. Anyway, the class was easy. Tests were easy. Discussions were easy. The quizzes were a little hard but that was it.
No assigned seats. Very easy class with weekly assignments. The only downside is that he won't move on until someone answers a question he asks. Lots of awkward silence. He's very helpful though.
ONLY TAKE HIM IF HE IS YOUR LAST RESORT. I think he gets a thrill out of people failing exams. The first exam he warned us it wont be just like the review. No one listened and almost everyone got A's and B's. On the second exam he stressed the same warning, no one listened and almost everyone failed. His lectures has nothing to do with the tests.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Lectures are really boring; it never helps and his voice is really annoying. 3 tests, 1 final, and other annoying online homeworks and quizzes.
Took him for the summer. We didn't do the discussions, had clicker questions for attendance, all 3 at home tests online (which you can cheat on), lectures were interesting but it's a boring subject for many ppl. Definitely recommend him, easy A for anyone to take, gives extra credit quizzes and bonus questions. Likes in-class debates¤t events
Professor Cole is great! Just do your work, and you will be good to go.
Horrible. Dont take him!!! GPA killer. He has homework every week, has discussion questions online. He has reviews but they r useless. The exams are horrible nothing like his reviews cant teach all he does is read off PP slides. assigned seating and its mandatory that you come to class its a grade. DONT take him.
Takes attn via clickers. Very helpful, understanding guy. Exams are pretty hard, doesn't follow guide. Discussion q's and Modules are a piece of cake! His lecture is very humorous, entertaining, informative and interactive. This class is the highlight of my week, I love Mr. Cole.
Professor Cole is great! He is clear in what he will cover throughout the semester and gives us great information on the topics that are discussed in class. Definitely a great professor to take if you are willing to do everything that he assigns, and come in to class as often as possible. GREAT professor.
The material in class is tested on, even if it seems pointless. The material in the textbook you will have assignments on, but it won't be on the test. #Confusing
He is very monotone & very boring. I got a C my freshman year.. so I would certainly discourage. Tests were hard for me, other assignments were easy. But neither correlated with each other which was frustrating. He made attendance mandatory (5%) since people stopped showing up.
This guy is nice, just needs to be more enthusiastic.Go to class for easy clicker points, all clicker questions are based on what you think.Do LearnSmart assignments early and just get them done.Discussion questions are easy just follow guidelines. For tests, review his powerpoint slides!!!!!This helped me so much.Overall, not a bad POLS prof
Very easy all you do is go to class do an clicker questions. His power points are online, you do an learn smart and an discussion question every week. You can even take your tests at home. Its really nothing hard about this class at all.
He has to have some sort of speech impediment. His voice is torturous. Class is mandatory with clickers. If you don't answer every clicker question (beginning, middle, and end of class) you'll be marked absent. It's a grade. Tests are difficult but online. Discussion questions due every week.
He is a very boring professor and attendance is mandatory and assigned seats. Test are detailed if you don't read the book and memorize everything in it then you'll fail. Don't take him if you want your GPA to go down.
He has a really annoying voice and looks like a derp, if you can get over that then you're set.
His lectures are good, but nearly all material on test is from the online book. He only puts 5 current event questions on the exams. His questions are too specific and difficult to answer. His TA was rude and did not respond to emails. He is reforming the POLS classes, but his exams are unfair. McGraw Hill Learnsmart had errors which I gave him.
Attendance isn't mandatory, meaning he doesn't count it towards your grade, but he says that everyone should come. I found that in his lectures he rambles a lot, he doesn't stick to the topic. Even then his tests will have questions specifically from his lectures. But you basically have to teach yourself with LearnSmart's and the book.
Nice professor! He has a clear speech and definitely knows what he is teaching. His exams are a little hard but he was easy on us in the second exam, once he got feedback from us regarding the difficulty of exams. You may not get an A in thisI would suggest him to make his exams easy-it is our core class, we do not want to be political scientists!
Likes what he teaches, and the test material isn't particularly hard. If you aren't interested in poly sci, you won't have a good time. He also has a loud, annoying voice so beware. Overall, a decent professor.
Really nice professor and he is passionate about what he teaches. Im not sure if he still does this (I took him in the summer) but he would usually post up the powerpoints before class so i recommend that you write them down first before class and then write down extra info as he teaches. Attendance is mandatory but based on opinion clicker Q's.
Honestly one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. 55% of the class are guaranteed 100's if you do the reading checks, attend class, and do the two mandatory short assignments. You'll have three tests which count as 45% of your final grade. He is very helpful and knowledgeable about the material. Never understood why Mr. Cole got a bad rep.
Professor Cole has a monotonous voice that's hard to focus on first thing in the morning, but he keeps lectures interesting with short clips of current events and a few class discussions. If he asks a question and nobody answers, don't expect him to just drop it. Seriously, just answer the question.
I feel like people dont like him because there is actually homework but the weekly homework is a great way to boost up your grade. Tests are ok, not too bad but not easy. He does have a monotone voice but its not terrible, he was very willing to help and even though he reads off PPT's he keeps it interesting. Also, attendance is a must!
Mr. Cole is very very loud. Front row sitters- BEWARE. His tests are random at best, and have little to do with the textbook. Power points are unfortunately organized.
Had to buy the online Textbook and code to do the homework. Gives out a lot of extra credit opportunity. Attendance is required by using clicker. Reads off from the slide.
He's not a horrible teacher but his tests usually have nothing to do with the SmartBook assignments and barely involve the main powerpoint slides, they consisted mostly of stuff you will have hoped to remember in a video or a off-hand comment he made in class about politics. Unless you're studying 247 in this class, you will have trouble.
I took this class over a summer semester and I was very impressed. I am not interested in the subject, but he still made it fairly engaging. The tests were pretty easy, smart book assignments are great, and he assigned only one mini paper. If you show up and do your work you can get an A easily - perfect for a required class
Took him during the summer. Lots of extra credit. Respectful and considerate to all students.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! My major is nothing to do with POLS, but his class is so interesting that I almost fall in love with it! It's the most fantastic pols i have ever take! Some people mentioned about the voice, but I think his voice is actually pretty cool! He is also really nice and considerable to his students. Recommend him!!
He makes it where it's easy to learn the material. He does give homework but that's straight from the book. His tests are based mainly off his lectures so if you doze off you might miss something. He likes to get students involved and makes you think about why things are a certain way.
He is an incredibly nice man who tries to make the course not only easy but interesting. The course by nature is boring but Cole asks very good questions for class discussion to cut the monotony and plays movie clips that are not only relevant but are mainstream and sometimes funny. I know some people dont like his voice but his class is easy so...
Nice prof. His powerpoints are worth going over before taking your test. Keep up with current events bc he usually has questions about them on his tests. I know people don't like the sound of his voice... but he is very helpful and actively works to improve his class.
This was an 8 am class for me and Cole made the class interesting, even that early in the morning. Tests are heavily based on the powerpoints and what he says in class, which is less textbook reading. LOTS of extra credit. Really nice professor!!! Stay on top of your game and you're guaranteed an A.
Very easy, straight to the point class. Passionate professor, tests are non cumulative, 3 tests, 10 module assignments (homework's), 2 VERY easy short assignments. clear objectives and really easy to study for. I studied the day before for each test and still ended up with an A. don't forget to do the modules because he does not usually remind you.
There are other pols professors if you want an easy A, but if you really want to learn then take him.
Study the power points for the tests. Nothing on smart book is relevant to what you need to know to pass the class. Great lecturer. Hes really nice and cracks jokes a lot during class. He also kept his own personal political preferences out of the equation which is good so he doesn't subjectively grade.
Have to complete leansmarts and 2 short assignments. This class is an easy A, just go to class.
He's a good lecturer, the class is pretty simple and easy. Tests isn't hard, the assignments are easy. You can definitely get an A and learn a lot about political science.
Not a bad choice as a professor. He does an amazing job at showing no bias in politics. The entire semester while talking about all these heated debates in 2017, I still have no clue what political party he stands for. He's sweet and always says "quiet please." Most POLS are ridiculously boring, but his lectures are engaging. Def take for POLS!
This professor is pretty simple. There are 3 exams that are of medium difficulty, learning modules throughout the course that are very easy and 2 short assignments that are very easy as well. He is somewhat monotoned but his lectures and powerpoints are reflective of the exams. Great professor overall!
He's a good professor and goes out of his way to teach the class in the most unbiased way as possible. Somewhat monotone but his interesting lecture makes up for it. Pretty easy class as long as you do the test review and understand most things on there before each test. Homeworks are long but they're a great grade booster.
Took him for both POLS 1336 and POLS 1337. Couldn't find a better professor for POLS. Exams are reflective of lectures. Lots of extra credit opportunity. Just study and exam review before the test and you should be good. Definitely take this professor.
Although the assignments we had to do are super easy, the exams are hard. Some of the questions had nothing to do with the lectures and the books that I read. But other than that, attendance and the Mindtap assignments are a free 100% since you can find most of it on Quizlet. LOL XD Anyways, not the best class, but not the worst. GO COOGS xd
Easy short assignments, hard tests.
Attendance is mandatory but he uploads his lecture slides. So you could miss attendance points but still get the notes. There are 3 tests throughout he semester. He has textbook assignments due online every week but all the answers are on quizlet. Id take him again just for the easy A
Great.
Excellent.
Online homeworks take a grand total of 4 hours to complete. 2 short assignments that are literally 3 paragraphs each. 2 tests and a final. There is attendance and questions throughout the lecture through tophat, but if you have a good groupme you can get notifications from people in class when to log in, or just show up. Easy A w/ JCole!
He is super nice and caring. He encourages participation during the lectures. Test are easy.
Professor Cole is genuinely a caring professor and wants his students to succeed in his class. There are 3 tests and mind tap modules that boost your grade a ton if you do them on time ( all you can find on quizlet ). His voice is monotone and he does try to make class bearable with making little side jokes here and there! Overall great professor!!
Super great! Took him for POLS 1336 & 1337 and it's an easy class to get an A. The course includes 3 exams (not cumulative and he gives out study guides for them) and 2 short assignments. But, the majority of your grade comes from mind tap assignments which only take 10 minutes every week or so. You do have to go to class for a grade.
Amazing prof. , 3 exams and study guide given before each. 1 assignment for summer class. you need to purchase access for mindtap (book & quiz) & TOPHAT (attendance). quiz is easy and can help boost your grade. group work in class required but it super easy. gives points for attendance. Easy A class. every exam has bonus question from current event
Exams are difficult but other assignments are easy.
Dr. Cole is a great professor. As long as you do his reviews and put in a little time before the exams there pretty self-explanatory. Also, he gives extra credit though surveys. Overall pretty solid choice.
Dr. Cole is a good professor for the nature of this type of class; he remains unbiased and delivers facts. I learned a lot from his lectures and he has a dry sense of humor which is always a plus. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the course which usually go toward your final grade. Come to class, do your work, and you pass.
You have to pay for access to TopHat (for attendance/participation) and Mindtap (homework). The Mindtaps assignments are easy, I completed all of the required ones before the 14 day trial was over, so I didn't have to pay for it. 2 short assignments & 3 exams, 3rd one is the final exam. Exams are easy if you study the powerpoints/attend lecture.
Yes, the comments about his voice are true. He pauses and has a super annoying voice. However, this class its self is not hard at all. Only 1 paper, Midterm, Final, and attendance count for a grade. He's a pretty strict grader and is SUPER lecture heavy. He's not the worse option, he's actually pretty okay, but try looking else where first.
Dr. Cole is the best. If you need to take a Political Science class he is your guy.
Pretty unbiased, good proff. If you read and pay attention in class you'll be fine
Professor Cole is a pretty good professor. Lectures are longwinded and I've found that most of the test material is straight from the textbook. That being said, the textbook is an absolute necessity for this course. A big plus is he offers a lot extra credit. Pols 1336 is a required course and Prof. Cole is unbiased and a solid option.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!Tests are not very clear, grading is not consistent, he takes 2 to 3 weeks to respond to emails and if you arent someone who loves spending time reading super long chapters over and over. Dont take it. If you dont read, you wont pass. GPA WILL SUFFER. Only pro is the mediocre extra credit points He gives at times.
Weekly homework assignments and two short assignments that are pretty easy if done properly, takes attendance every class and may ask questions on TopHat. Wont really pass the exams much if you dont read and study and attend the lectures.
Good ol' J. Cole. This man is cool. He is chill in class and offers a truck load of extra credit that gets added directly to the course grade. Lectures are interesting, and he likes referring to videos of "Family Guy" to help the class understand some things. He definitely has dry humor and makes class fun. You get a test review and it IS the test.
Currently taking Cole this sem for POLS1337. I also took him last sem for POLS1336. He is the best professor you will ever take for POLS for UH. I heavily respect him for how he teaches the class. He genuinely wants you to pass and greatly delivers information. His lectures incorporate information about the government and how current news weigh in.
took him for both 1336 and 1337 and loved him for both. Tests are easy as long as you pay attention to lectures and study a couple of days before. Offers tons of extra credit through the semester and i got b's on all the tests and still made an A in the class. Interesting lectures and tests are mostly based on lectures
I genuinely expected more from Professor Cole based on these reviews. Heres the real deal. His lectures are not engaging, you will daze off if youre not so into politics. Mind taps are easy. 3 tests, last one was harder than 1 & 2 combined. 2 short writing assignments. He takes attendance through an app so if you like skipping, move along.
Dr. Cole knows a lot about politics. Which is great, except his lectures are very dry, thorough, not designed for questions, and can be condensed. Grammar is super important to him, he took off 8 points on both papers of mine because I didn't use the correct "its". Many students in my section had that happen too.
Loved this class took it summer 2020 and do not regret it at all! There is a lot of homework on cengage where you have to pay about $80 for but other than that everything is smooth sailing. This class is so fascinating and I learned so much with his amazing lectures. Study guides are provided and if you do that and study lectures you are set!
Took him for POLS 1336. He provides a lot of extra credit opportunities and gives a review sheet for every exam (3) that has pretty much all of the information you need. Honestly, even if you get 80's on the exams you can get an A as long as you complete the other assignments.
He's a good professor and the material covered is reasonably interesting. Pretty easy A due to the extra credit being entire percentages toward your grade and being short quizzes for the researchers in the polisci department. The exams aren't difficult and a lot of the homework has unlimited attempts and will straight up give you the answers.
Good professor. Definitely do every extra credit opportunity you can. Tests are a bit tricky but the class in general is pretty easy. He is clearly knowledgeable about his subject. I missed 3 of the MindTap readings on accident but managed to get an A with the extra credit and getting Bs on tests.
Sweetest man , he is very responsive to his emails and on MT . He provides so much extra credit its insane . He is funny in opinion and is respectful of everyones POV of politics . Also literally the test ARENT hard you just had to do the review ( which he gives for all the test ) and look over your notes . Easy A+ .
I took Professor Cole this semester for his asynchronous class and will be taking him again next semester! His pre-recorded lectures are interesting to watch and are really helpful. His test reviews are also very helpful. Professor Cole also regularly sends out emails as well, which I appreciate. Take him if you can!
This professor does not check his emails regularly and is not attentive to students. This professor does not also care about student success during this course. I emailed him three times with no answer and even called his office. Still no answer. He is not willing to help students with minor mistakes. Terrible professor
Very heavy on lecturing but the lectures are very informational and it's helpful to take notes for exams. He really knows how to keep neutral when it comes to politics considering discussions can sometimes get heated in class. Would take again & recommend.
Prof Cole was definitely an interesting teacher. he gives so much extra credit. I think I scored a total of 6 extra points towards my FINAL GRADE, not tests. I definitely recommend attending lectures as his slides do not have much information and he also gives a test review which has everything. The key to passing tests is that review.
Dr. Cole is the best at UH. You will learn a lot from his class.
Prof. Cole is good. Attendance questions in lecture, 3 tests, weekly inquisitive's, and 2 short assignments. Study for the tests. Gives out extra credit opportunities.
A straightfoward class. He never gives out reminders for assignments, in class or otherwise, so stay on top of those. The assignments are really easy, though. He says participation is a grade, but you don't have to talk during class or anything - it's mostly surveys on Tophat. He gives out SO MUCH extra credit it's astounding. Great sense of humor.
I'm not a huge political science fan, but he made the lecture material easy to understand while incorporating connections to current events. The class itself was not too difficult, but he offers a lot of extra credit throughout the semester.
Excellent professor, I made an account on this site just to recommend him. He did an excellent job at delivering the material through informative, engaging, and entertaining lectures. Tests were not hard, and the homework is textbook-based. Participation generally means answering the occasional question on top hat. 10/10 I would recommend.
Lectures are interesting and the tests are pretty easy if you look over the study guide he gives out. There are two writing assignments that are not too long and interesting topics.
Professor Cole was the best GOVT professor I've had. Participation is mandatory through TopHat questions. 2 short assignments that you choose, 3 tests, quizzes, and lots of extra credit surveys available. Just stay on top of things and do the test reviews. I recommend going to class, but he uploads the PowerPoints so you don't have to.
Personally, the class says its in person, but it is easier to do it on your own all online. The professor's lectures are hard for me to sit through, mainly because that is not my learning style. He is sort of funny, not bad professor. I would not take him again just because I know there are others that can make a lecture seem like a conversation.
I really recommend him as professor because not only is very understanding but he responds to emails quickly, sends follow emails with when assignments are due and excellent of reminding students of when exams are coming up plus he makes the review which all you need to know to pass and posts top hat question later on for you to complete.
The grade consists of 3 exams, InQuizitives, Top Hat participation, and two writing assignments. His lectures are alright, not super interesting. I recommend taking notes in the PPT file. Most grades are computer graded besides the writing assignments, which have clear instructions, so not difficult.
Take this man yall. The amount of extra credit he gives is ungodly. He gives you a review before each test that covers all the topics that will be on the test. The amount of work he gives is very doable: 3 test, inquisitives, 2 short assignments, and tophat questions during class. If you try in this class, you will definitely get an A.
This professor was lowkey boring, BUT what he has on the lectures will 99% be on the exam. He gives test reviews and posts the lectures. He uses TopHat, that is how he gets attendance.
Attendance isn't that mandatory as long as you don't forget the top hats. The tests were a little difficult for me even when studying, but if you know a lot about present politics you should be alright! We also have weekly assignments on inquisitive and 2 short assignments, you shouldn't have any problems with them as long as you complete them!
If you're wanting to take 2306, TAKE HIM!! The easiest professor I've ever had BY FAR. His assignments can be done in a few days if you really put your mind to it, and he drops the lowest InQuizitive grade at the end of the semester. Tons of extra credit, incredibly understanding, and overall a fair grader. Go to lecture, and you'll be fine.
Funny guy, easy-to-follow lectures, easy grades! Class grades consists of TopHat questions (no wrong answers, only need a sentence or two to explain your answer choice to a poll = 100%), Inquisitives (finish before due = 100%), 2 short assignments (takes like 30-45 minutes to finish each), and 2-3 exams. Workload is practically non-existent.
Excellent professor. Exams are exactly whats in the lectures. Course consists of smartbooks, 2 short writing assignments, tophat questions which is 100% correct (no right or wrong), and 3 exams. Extra credit also is there which could bump your overall course grade letter one whole letter (B- to B). 100% would take him for govt classes
Took it during the summer 5-week session. You have 3 exams (just follow the study guides he sends and you're golden), and a bunch of inquizative assignments. I was able to knock out each week's assignments in about 2 hours. In addition, you get some top hat participation assignments but they're just basic questions. Overall great class!
Pretty easy! Just 3 exams, 2 short assignments (which are pretty easy), and inquisitive (which are also easy).
The course has 3 exams that are non cumulative and cover a few units each with inquizitives and 2 short assignments that are graded lightly. The exam content itself isn't difficult, but beware of trick questions so you do need to properly understand the content.
Cool professor it is ironic that he teaches Texas gov..
J Bryan Cole was a great professor. Super knowledgeable and easily understood. 3 exams, 2 short assignments, a few inquizitives. Awesome professor!
Got a B. There's only 5 grades total: 2 long essays, midterm, final and participation. He graded papers and exams like he was an English honors professor instead of a Political Science one: aka he grades harshly. Canvas said we had 3 extra credit assignments and we ended up having none. He's only good for first year students taking Gov. Avoid him.
Do not take him if you care about your GPA. Political parties unnecessarily hard, grades paper like he's honors English & has no clear criteria. Very opinionated grading. No extra credit 2 exams both graded awfully hard. Doesn't put grades in until the last day so basically sets u up for failure
Very easy class with light workload. Gives many extra credit opportunities and has well organized lectures. Being present for tophat questions are important as its apart of your grade. Exams arent bad but take some general understanding over the topic.
passionate and cracks jokes. coursework is light (mainly just inquizitive modules), just stay on top of things. requires two short assignments over the whole term and an online cga (common ground for action) forum but they're not lengthy at all and don't take much time. each of the tests has 5 bonus qs which is nice padding if you need it.
This course was made unnecessarily difficult. Professor grades papers & written exams like an English honors professor. Provides snarky & unhelpful feedback. Was impossible to reach via email & replies with unrelated/vague responses. Graded on 5 things; 2 papers, 2 CASA exams, participation. No extra credit. Don't take if you want to ruin your GPA.
He was okay. He grades harshly as if he were an English Honors Professor. I somehow managed to get an A- on both of the essays he assigned to us. However, on the essay during the exam, he grades harshly as he had no criteria and it brought down my exam grade badly. I wouldn't say avoid him at all costs, but I suggest you look elsewhere first.
2 midterms,1 final(noncumulative),2 short assignments(easy),and a weekly inquizitive(a little bit time consuming),participation(tophat),and extra credit opportunities. He may come across as monotone but is a great proffessor who really wants students to understand government, as he would pull up pictures and videos to better understand the subject.
Prof Cole is monotone but he is very kind! I had to miss an exam last second and he responded to my email quickly and was very accommodating. There are tophat questions during class due every Sunday. The tests are lecture heavy but you will be fine if you just study the slides. He gives lots of extra credit so do it!
(took 2305) Dr. Coles's lectures don't reflect on the tests, the review he gives will only get you a B on exams if you want an A read the textbook, take an immense amount of notes in class, and study a week and a half prior to the exam day, that's the only way I ended up with an A+. He does give extra credit ~4 points max on final grade.
The professor is a little awkward, but he's cool. The lectures help a lot with the exams, so make sure to study those. There are also 2 short writing assignments, but you can choose which ones you complete.
We only had two exams, two papers, and online participation that can be done in class or from home. His lectures are very clear, well organized, and well presented. I learned a lot from his class, and he is very funny and is so knowledgeable. Glad to have ended my undergrad with a class of his!
This was a fairly easy class with not too much work. There are inquisitive due every other week and a lot of easy participation grades. Attendance isn't mandatory and you can do the participation anywhere. The tests are fairly difficult but contain some common-sense questions. There are some extra credit work that can really help your grade.
He's a great professor! Assignments are easy but make sure to stay on top of the Tophats, stay up-to-date on on current events because sometimes it'll show up on the exams, and much more. But it's an easy class. As long as you do the assignments, read the lecture slides/textbook, you'll be fine.
Easy class, all you need to do is the inquisitive he gives every week or so, tophat in class (or at home before sunday) and two short projects that you can do in 20 mins each. Very boring lectures, guy has a monotone voice he doesn't even need a mic. Our class was during the election years so all he yapped about was that. he gives exam review sheet
Great professor! Assignments are easy, but stay on top of the Tophats and current events. Use resources like unstuck study to prep for the exams - they're not too bad with some review. Overall, an enjoyable class.
He teaches clearly and can be a bit monotone but he does teach exactly what will be on the exams. Inquisitives are due every week which can be time-consuming. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he does TopHats which are a participation grade, also due each week. Exams aren't difficult, just do the review.
He's chill the lectures are bearable, not so much in the morning, but the work is easy and he gives a lot of extra credit.
Very lecture heavy class, tests reflect the lessons very closely and if you pay attention you'll do well. There's online work every few weeks alongside participation questions that can affect your grade if you don't show up at all.
he's not bad, but tests were kind of hard
Highly recommend this class for GOVT 2306. There were 3 tests and a pre/ post test which gave extra credit. The tests were not too hard and he provided a review before, which practically gave us the test. He does a lot of in class tophat popper questions, but he opens them up and you have until the end of the week to complete them.
Participation definitely matters in this course, he has a total of 3 exams (at casa), 50 mcq's + 5 bonus questions, two short assignments, and the rest are inquisitives. I did not make at least a B on any of the exams, so doing all three extra credit and the top hat questions really did help my grade, the inquisitives boost your grade as well.
Professor Cole knew what he was talking about and was able to teach it well. The class is just lecture after lecture and very test heavy, but extremely doable if you put in a little time to study.
Definitely would take again! Super helpful and very easy class if you pay attention and take notes during lectures. Even if you miss a class, everything is easily accessible. The lectures are great, and personally, I think the professor is really funny and explains things in detail.
Took him for Political Parties and I highly recommend! Interesting class that went over the history of political parties and their influence today. You are graded on a midterm, final, two essays and participation (top hat). Be prepared to write a lot, and ask for feedback on the essays and exams. One of the best polisci profs.
