Material is not easy, but he tries to simplify it as much as possible. He is very knowlegable about the subject, but has a hard time relating the material to students.Sometimes not very clear, but tries his best to explain and is always willing to give extra help whenever he can. makes research methods tolerable
He is still getting used to teaching. Tests are detailed, must memorize the book. Gives a lot of extra credit so you can get a good grade. Paper not hard at all, very casual class. Got an A.
He's awesome.
One of my favorite psyc professors at TU. I hate biology, but Devan actually took the time to teach you everything you were expected to know (and he made it interesting.) Outlined the tests and offered extra credit. Really great, funny guy!
funny and nice, never goes off on tangents and stays on task because its needed. the material is hard but he gives you a straight forward study guide. he does powerpoints all class but its helpful and he posts them to print b4 each class. i suggest you take A & P before you take this because of the content
if you're intimidated by the sound of "physiological psychology" just take it with Devan. He's a great professor & he will spend time on tough concepts to make sure everyone understands. Tests are not too bad, but you definitely need to study for them. Read the book. He gives extra credit opportunities and it's wonderful!
DON'T DO IT
He was great, I was dreading research methods but actually didn't mind coming to class. Really cool guy, very helpful, actually spent over an hour talking with him one day about the class and just advice on life
He was a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and fun. This was a hard class, but he really gave it his all to make sure we understood. Read the book, come to class, study your balls off, and you'll do fine. No tricks.
Attendance is optional but it would be silly not to go. Material is very difficult and reading the book and paying attention clarifies. Luckily he puts everything on blackboard and gives a targeted review of exactly whats on the exam. Very nice and helpful though
Physiological Psychology is hard. No matter who you take its a hard class BUT Devan really enjoys what he teaches and is very clear in his explanations. HE ALSO GRADES EVERY TEST ON A CURVE! With the curve, as long as you study you will be fine!
One of the nicest professors at Towson University! He really takes an interest in what he teaches. If I had the opportunity to have him again,I will.
He really does enjoy what he's teaching and will help you at any moment; you can even email him and he will respond! A very nice person, I hate Biology but he made it easier to understand. I did really bad at first, but I ended up with a C which I can not complain coming from a 45%! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN..TARGETED REVIEWS ARE VERY HELPFUL
Amazing guy and professor. Material is extremely hard, but if you take notes as he goes over the powerpoints and READ you'll do okay. Loved going to class.
Awful. Haven't learned a thing. Nice guy though
amazing professor. really cares about what he is teaching. yes somtimes goes off topic but he's a funny guy with a lot of personality. if you talk to him outside/after class you will see how knowledgeable he is on the topic of methods/physio. Works hard to find topics that interest students. study the slides and the book for exams
He is a great teacher&made the class enjoyable. Some people may find that the concepts were boring, but Devan made it interesting&worthwhile. He was very reasonable with exams&the course load was not that bad, only 1 article summary due at the end of the semester.Just read the textbook before the exams(only three)&attend class. He's great&I recommend!
In what can be a seemingly hard class Devan was a solid professor. He gave you targeted reviews for each of the 3 exams (which you can easily take notes for, study, and get a high B just from that) was a fair grader with a curve when needed, and really tried to connect with the class. I would take him if you are going to take this course.
Devan was amazing! :) He loves what he teaches &it shows every day when he steps into the class. He's funny, makes the hard concepts easier to understand,is a fair grader& understanding to student situations. If you read the chapters& use his targeted review, the exams are easy. The course load is light, with only 1 article summary,1 presentation&3 exams
the term "Physiological Psychology" seemed intimidating prior to taking this class, but after taking it with Devan,I have a new found interest in this area.I am even considering changing my major!Devan was a great teacher! if you have to take the class, definitely take it with him! He's a fair grader and very understanding. One of the best at TU!
Awesome professor!!! Took him for research methods spring 10 and he was great. Easy to talk to and verrryyy funny!!!!!!! You must take him!!!!
Made a boring class interesting with his dry sense of humor.
Really nice and laid back, but class is kind of hard. Each test had so much information on it, would have been better if he split up the material and had more exams.
Prof. Devan is a very nice and very smart professor. This class is required for all psych majors and not a lot of students like it but Devan is a very fair grader and he knows what he is talking about. If you want to be good and achieve something, he is a good choice to take. Excellent Professor!
Professor Devan is one of my favorite professors at Towson. He always tells jokes to try to keep people awake in class. Physiological PSYC is probably my hardest class being a PSYC major, but Devan post study guides for each chapter and offers you a target review so you will know what to study. He also gives 5 point extra credit for each exam.
Prof D is very nice and laid back!He is knowledgable and enthusiastic about biopsych! You just have to like him and his class! It is interesting and more challenging than other psych classes but I enjoyed each class a lot. GREAT and very smart professor!
Very knowledgable & very smart! Take him if you are interested in the brain and behavior! You can learn a lot about research! Awesome professor!
He really knows about biopsychology since that is his field. The class is difficult with a lot of material, but if you devote enough time to it you will do very well. He uses attendance as a way to boost your final grade if you are in between two letter grades! 4 tests and one article assignment that is built in as grade booster. Love him
Awesome guy and class. Not an easy class but he's the best to take it with
I took him for a summer course, and he had us do our research paper in groups - I ended up doing WAY too much. Other than that, he is fair. He sticks to what's on the syllabus. He didn't lower my grade out of spite even though my attendance was horrible (I'm sure I lost all 10 attendance points though). He doesn't give clear feedback on grades.
he ight
Long lectures BUT gives important info than the power points show. He gets off topic and rushes sometimes, RECORD ON VOICE MEMO LISTEN LATER IT'LL HELP ALOT!. Gives reviews ahead of time and THANK god his tests are always multiple choice ONLY. study everything he gives on the review, you'll pass. Im horrible at studying but i PASSED w/review
Physio is NOT easy but if you study and complete the targeted review, you will be FINE. Devan obviously knows what he's talking about and sometimes his lectures are hard to pay attention to bc he goes on a tangent. But I'm really glad I took the class with him. There's only 3 MC exams and 1 article review. READ the textbook! Take Devan!
The lectures get off topic very fast. Sometimes it is very hard to pay attention and understand the connection to his stories and the lecture material. He is very knowledgeable, but is not the number one lecturer.
While he certainly knows the information, his lectures can get off-topic very fast. Sometimes its alright to break away or a little bit, but sometimes half the class is rambling about something unimportant. Attendance is recorded every class. Almost every class, everyone is running to get out.
Devan is one of the smartest and funniest professors I know. If you are willing to do the work, he is more than willing to help. PSYC 465 and PSYC 314 are upper level psychology courses and one should plan to attend most if not all of the classes to have a firm understanding of the material.
Devan is such a helpful professor and very understanding. The material is difficult, but he is the best teacher to take it with because he is very clear about what will be on tests. He gives a study guide and has review sessions to tell you exactly what to understand. Read the book, the parts he tells you to on the review. I love him take him!
Dr. Devan is an extremely helpful professor. He is very passionate about his work so his lectures can go off on a tangent about the Morris Water Maze. He is really funny and wants his students to do well. He also makes this class easier by letting you write the paper piece by piece and giving you the data.
Dr. Devan really cares for his students to do well. He lets you buy an older edition of the text book to save money, and he is more than willing to help you in and out of class. I've had some good times showing up to class because Dr. Devan made me laugh with his humor and powerpoint presentations. My suggestion, do not take 314 over the summer.
I took physiological psyc in the spring 2016, but I forgot to rate Dr. Devan. I have taken anatomy & physiology I and II, so the beginning half of the class was a breeze for me. He gives you target reviews and extra credit questions that will help you out on the exams. Devan is a very knowledge man and funny. I studied mostly from PP
Do not take him! He is all over the place with his lectures, study guides, and exams. Half the stuff he talks about on the exam is not in either the textbook or powerpoint. He is so disorganized with his lecture it is impossible to follow him. I would recommend taking with someone else.
This is not an easy course, but Devan makes it manageable. He gives a review that is literally on the exact things that are on the test. He is always available to talk to and really wants his students to do well. As long as you pay attention in class and do the targeted review you should get an A or B.
Do not take him! I learned absolutely nothing from him! He clearly knows what he is talking about, but has no idea how to teach it. He is all over the place with his lectures and powerpoint. I only passed, because I read the textbooks. I wish I had taken this course with a different professor.
Took him for PSYC 465. He is unorganized and scatterbrained, which makes it hard to follow his lecture. The class is lecture heavy and has powerpoint, but is hard to follow. He doesn't use Blackboard, but uses Google Drive instead, which is annoying. If you take him, get the textbook. You'll need it, to clarify his lecture.
He goes above and beyond to help you. The tests are exactly the same things found in the review paper he gives out on review day. If you want to really have a good understanding over the material and how it's applied in the real world you should take him. If you just study hard before exams you'll be okay. He tries to keep the lecture interesting
Professor Devan is very passionate about his work and wants to share his knowledge with his students. He understands that not every psych major is interested in research but he goes out of his way to make the material entertaining and relativel to all of his students IF they are willing to put in the time and effort to do the class work.
Dr. Devan is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is well respected as a graduate of McGill University, and has made significant contributions to the field of neuroscience and understanding brain pathways involved in learning and memory. His classes are great. He always kept me engaged and held good class discussions.
Definitely, recommend taking Dr. Devan. His lectures are simply amazing, he is hilarious and is extremely knowledgeable in psychology and neuroscience. Definitely, recommend visiting his office hours, he is easy to approach and will always help you if you talk to him.
Great professor. Knows his stuff. Many students want it so easy and not do the work. Well they shouldnt take science classes. Nice guy and helpful with hard topics
I am torn writing this, he knows the material like the back of his hand but lacks the ability to teach it. He is so nice & means well, but very add & disorganized. During lectures prepare for off topic covos/tangets. I read the text & taught myself majority of the material. Four exams and one paper. Does allow for extra credit on exams.
Best prof ever
Great guy. You'll have to work for your grade but will learn a lot.
Dr. Devan is a great choice for 314. He emphasizes what you really need to know for the tests and helps you in every step of the way with the paper. You will learn so much in the class, not just how to write the paper. I didnt think I would do well writing it, but I came to enjoy it. Hes just a funny and lovable guy. He wants the best for you!
This is seriously the easiest class, we do basically nothing, and our quizzes are a video documentary with about 5 questions that you can take home to work on. The midterm was a packet that you could take home and work on. SUPER EASY!!!!
very laid back, gets off topic, convince him to do anything. quizzes on movies and you have them in class, take home midterm and take home final. super chill and lenient
Prof Devan is good because he actually helps you and if you ask for extra time hell give it to you. At times he seemed to get annoyed but other than that hes helpful, he really wants you to do good. His lectures are boring because hell get side tracked and talk about his life. And randomly laughs on his own. (Weird) exams are really easy!!
Really good professor. Wants his students to do well and is always available outside of class for help. Lectures are kind of boring.
Dr. Devan is one of my favourite professors at Towson. He works hard to ensure that his students understand the material because he understands that research methods isn't for everyone. He spends a lot of time in his office and LOVES helping his students. I highly recommend taking him if research doesn't really interest you.
3-4 exams, depending how far behind he gets (usually a month behind). He's insanely smart and knows his stuff, he just tends to space out and go on tangents. His targeted reviews are the exams, but read the textbook and there's an easy article review to do. He'll seriously help you out if you ask. He's super nice and does make some good jokes.
Hes a smart guy, but doesn't know how to lecture. Sometimes he can come off as rude if you ask him for help and it can be annoying. He's very monotone and gets off topic which makes the class get behind and lectures hard to follow. Read from the book and did reviews. Gives a lot of extra credit on exams though which are helpful. 4 exams 1 paper
Awesome teacher! Have never had a teacher that cares more about his students. He truly wants to help his students and works very hard to give studies a lot of resources. If youre willing to put in the work for this class, you will do just fine! If you go to office hours he is very helpful.
Such a great teacher!! Gives you feedback, truly cares about his students, and wants you to do well. He puts a lot of time into helping students and you cant say that about many teachers!!
Worst class Ive ever taken. He rambles about nothing for the entire class. Hes WEEKS behind in class then he gets mad at you. He never gives you grades back. You have to write your paper on the water maze no exceptions. Hes rude and makes you feel dumb for asking questions. His tests are incredibly hard. Take ANYONE else for research methods.
Odd dude. Doesn't actually teach. Tests my patience rather than my knowledge because it is so boring and unnecessary.
He's a great guy, but this class was beyond confusing. He would just go on tangents about nothing that had to do with the class. You have to find time to literally sit him down and talk if you want to understand what's going on. He will explain nothing- then grade incredibly hard. Set up office hours bc you won't learn anything in class.
Pretty funny guy but you don't really learn much in class, might just be for TSEM though, can't speak for other classes
Do not take this guy. He is beyond frustrating and I never knew what we were doing in class because he never knew what we were doing. He is confusing and goes on tangents every class about things that dont matter! Unprepared every class. He is easy going and amusing at times, but its not worth the struggle you will have throughout the semester.
Very interesting guy, loves to talk about the rats in his lab. He seems to not care too much what his students do, but if you talk to him during class he will help you out with all assignments. He always does reviews etc before quizzes and tests and basically gives away the answers, so its an easy A.
He is really intelligent and its obvious he knows what he is talking about,BUT he does not know how to properly teach it to students effectively. this was more of a self-taught class. Tough content and even tougher exams. always comes in late and we were behind a lot. it is not worth the tuition money. go get proper education somewhere else.
Just don't take him. He's a nice person deep down and you can get an A if you know how to work his system, but dealing with the tediousness of sitting in class doing nothing is NOT worth it.
Dr. Devan is an awesome guy! The poor ratings on here are from students who must be lazy. The classes he teaches are meant to be challenging; but he is ALWAYS available for help. It's not hard to get an A in the class if you show up and try. I have only had one or two other professors that care about their students as much as he does. Take him!
Although professor Devan was very lenient, I did not enjoy this class. The class had no structure and did not serve it's purpose. Most of the classes were watching documentaries and just listening to him talk.
i would not recommend him for anyone who is not a biology major. he mumbles and does not teach you what you need to know for the tests but goes on and on about very complicated things we do not need to know
Dr. Devan is awesome. He's such a caring professor, and even with the transition to online, he was so accessible and available whenever. He genuinely wants his students to do well, offers a lot of extra credit and was overall such a funny guy. Enjoyed his class and would recommend him to anyone. Exams are pretty easy and he gives review sheets!
Dr. Devan is not good at staying on task and often times steers away from the syllabus. The class is confusing but easy to pass.
For TSEM Dr. Devan threw out the syllabus halfway through the semester. Grades are not known to students. Doesn't use Blackboard or any type of organized system besides a shared google drive folder. TONS of essays although not that long. Really nice professor but course objectives are unclear and never stays on-topic during lectures.
It's an easy core class to get an A, but it is very unorganized. Student's do not know there grades until the very end. He goes off topic and all you do is watch documentaries. The essay's and quizzes are pretty easy as long as you watch the documentary.
He is not helpful at all. He also specifically calls out one student and mocks their questions every time they ask something. He is rude and unprofessional. He goes off on tangents and does not seek to teach the actual research methods material. He also seems completely disinterested in answering questions and helping students. Don't take him!
Dr. Devan is a very funny and caring professor, knows his stuff too, but is not good at explaining it. Gets very sidetracked. Very easy to teach yourself the material if you have the motivation to, but the stuff can be dense. Only graded on 3 assignments and extra credit is available if you ask about it. Great guy, difficult class
Professor Devan isn't that bad. The class itself is kind of hard but he gives a lot of resources to help pass exams. He's is super helpful if you need it. Studying is necessary to pass exams and textbook is really helpful to understanding, which he provides.
I took this class because nothing else was available, but I ended up really enjoying it. It is a hard class, with difficult topics to understand. However, Prof Devan was very accommodating and just wants you to do well. rewatching his lectures helps a lot for exams. He curves exams. His jokes are pretty funny too.
I have taken multiple courses with Dr. Devan and got involved in his research lab. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures and was beyond impressed by the effort and time he makes for his students. Go to class and take advantage of the resources he provides and you will do great. My experience at Towson would not have been the same without Dr. Devan.
Hes a good teacher and is really smart, no doubt. But hes just very distracted, the material is easy to learn and pretty straight forward he just sometimes doesnt pay attention to his own teaching.
You have to teach yourself the material. He is horrible at explaining things in a digest-able way
The class was a little disorganized. I also didn't really know what was going on half of the time. Professor Devan often would have to cut lectures short because we ran out of time. But, he really cared and wanted us to pass the class. If you are looking to learn, or for an easy time, however, maybe choose someone else.
Lectures are extremely hard to follow and usually have nothing relative to the exams or PowerPoints. You think this is a 200 level course? No, it is all 400 level content. Exams are tough and you will be afraid of failure constantly. Sorry but the people giving 5 stars are just because hes a nice guy, but if you care about your grade: AVOID.
It was a very difficult class. I tried to pay attention and follow along but he would get distracted a lot. Lectures are confusing and very heavy on information. He said attendance was not mandatory at first but then started taking attendance. He gives study guides but does not help. Only has a few tests and a paper the entire semester so do good.
This class was extremely difficult. The lectures were painful to sit through because he does NOT do a good job TEACHING the material. The only good thing about his class is he curves his exams. Keep in mind: if he taught the material well he wouldn't have to curve the exams by 2 letter grades!
Take someone else. This class was awful
ALWAYS lets out late & I have a class across campus right after. Teaches the way it makes sense to him & like he is reviewing material, not like we are being shown it for the first time. Talks very slow and gets stuck on things which makes it hard to get through info. For tests, he has a lot of resources like lecture notes, etc. Grade is 3 tests
Watched a video of an Indian doctor explaining brain disorders and he mocked their accent many times and laughed. Jokingly complained that the mowing was loud and shouted "hey (stereotypical Hispanic name) keep it down" then laughed and said "I hope that didn't offend anyone" then shook his head. Also, too much info taught for one exam.
Grade comprised of 3 exams, attendance (the weight of an exam), and 1 paper. He gets off track and distracted a lot, we fell very far behind. The lectures are hard to pay attention to at times, but if you pay attention and read the textbook and extra resources you'll do fine. If you're a good test taker you'll do well.
Do not take him. It is tough because he is currently the only professor who teaches this class, which is needed for credit. I wish they offered someone else who could actually teach the material. Not a good teacher, does not take criticism, and his exam reviews have nothing to do with the exam. I actually think he enjoys confusing us. Avoid.
Dr. Devan truly cares about his students. If you need help, he will gladly sit down with you and explain things to you in ways that you can understand. His lectures can get a little lengthy but you really do learn from them. I always recommend Dr. Devan.
The class is really not hard if you know how to study. He makes it easy to get an A and wants his students to succeed. I learned a lot in this class and he is really nice once you get to know him and his teaching style. Lectures can drag sometimes but he tries to make them interesting.
Great person. He cares a lot and is really funny. If you are sensitive and easily offended, do not take him. And also be less square. Anyway, he's cool the class is pretty simple. But the lecture two times a day is a DRAG! Class and lab will feel like a waste of time 9 out of 10 times. You can not even focus during his lectures.
Very difficult content, and he does not make it easy to learn. At no point so far have I understood anything going on in this class. It almost sounds like a different language.
Dr. Devan is also an incredibly approachable and supportive professor. He takes the time to get to know his students and their individual strengths and challenges, and provides personalized feedback to help each student succeed. If you have the opportunity to take a course with him, do not hesitate. I hope that helps
His lectures are long and you can tell he is very knowledgable about the field. Sometimes talks over our heads. Exam reviews are helpful to know what CONCEPTS to study but he flips the wording of questions around to be confusing. He curves the heck out of exams though. It was a weird class but I enjoyed him as a prof.
I've had him for more than once and this is the class he teaches the best. He gives a ton of feedback on research papers before the final turn in, gives freebee questions for his exams (and curves them a lot). If you aren't a good studier I would avoid his classes, but I learned a lot from him and his class made me really interested in research.
Dr. Devan is obviously very knowledgeable about the subject matter, but he lectures like you already know the material. He does answer questions if you have them though, and does explain concepts if needed. He does curve his tests and gives freebee and extra credit questions. I would recommend this class if you are able to sit through lectures.
This professor is funny, great sense of humor. His downfalls are that his lectures are long & boring. He has poor time management. You don't know your grade in the class until the end of semester because he doesn't use Blackboard. I emailed him a couple of times asking about my grade in the class. He's condescending and rude when you ask questions.
Devan is a good guy and a good teacher. However the quality of students are getting worse. Most my classmates never came to class and complained they didn't know what was going on in the GroupMe and then they blame him. He does get off topic but he's a great teacher and very nice. Recommend!
Not sure why so many students are giving negative feedback, maybe if you actually came to class you would realize he is a nice guy. The tests were difficult, but he curved them two whole letter grades to make sure we succeed. Yes, he is sarcastic.. but he is quite intelligent. If you don't mind studying and coming to class, recommend!
The class is very science heavy, so material can be hard to grasp. I would only recommend this class if you are a good studier/test-taker. He gives plenty of opportunities to raise your grade if ever you do bad on exams. He is very knowledgable, and provides so many resources for you to do well. Highly recommend!
The lectures are pretty boring, but its clear how hard he tries! He is a really nice professor and is very accommodating as long as you don't take advantage of it! He also clearly has a TON of experience with conducting research and writing reports, so a great resource. Great professor, would definitely take him again!
He is a good teacher, but my critique would be that although some say he has a lot of experience with research, his research profile and publications do not reflect much recent work. I wish he had more recent published work for his students to read and gain passion in animal research.
i dont even know what to say ab this dude. he is so unorganized & has awful time management. on the other hand, he is very accommodating & truly wants everyone to succeed. if he is your only option don't be scared to take him you will be fine. if you get stressed by unclear grading criteria and loose deadlines you should prob take someone else
The content is quite challenging, but with dedication and using resources like the textbook and Unstuck AI, you can excel. The professor is knowledgeable and provides valuable feedback to help students succeed. Just be prepared to put in the work.
if you like clear set expectations, due dates, structured lessons, and mental clarity maybe find another professor. he is nice, laid back, funny, and you will probably do well, but it can be stressful as a type A person since it is nothing like the other classes you take. if I could go back and not sign up for this section I would.
Dr. Devan was one of my favorite professors here at Towson. He is incredibly involved and actually likes teaching. His exams are straight off of the study guide. If you actually show up to class and listen to him there is no possible way you fail. He is very funny and very understanding.
I wouldnt take him again, his lectures are terrible, he treats this class like you already have a thorough understanding of biopsyc. Very snarky when asked questions. Exams are tough. I taught myself the content before each exam, if it wasnt for his full letter grade curve, I wouldnt have passed. He is funny and wants everyone to pass. Not worth it
He is complicated. He def wants you to pass but his lectures are just confusing and hard to follow. However there are many resources to help guide you to correct answers, study guides for exams that do help a lot. Also does not use blackboard. The class will stress you out. Also he has very funny dry humor so class is entertaining in a boring way.
