Possibly the best class I have ever taken. I learned a great deal, was hardly ever bored, and content was explained excellently. Dunne is a fantastic professor.
Absolutely incredible professor. Highly recommended!!!
Fun, interesting class. Learn a lot of not too difficult material. Good lecture slides with good attempts at humor. Don't need a prior understanding of advanced physics or anything. Exams are relatively easy. Online quizzes weekly. Discussion is a blast.
This class is super easy as long as you go to most of the classes. He puts all the notes online, so even if you don't go, its no big deal! I recommend it if you need a gen ed!
Awesome class, great professor, highly recommended!
What a lovely, squirrely fellow.
Class is interesting. Tests are fair (straight from notes/online hw/old exams). Dunne tries really hard to keep it funny and interesting. Sometimes it's overboard, but overall he's a great professor and it's sincerely interested that everybody understands.
Dunne is awesome. This is one of those classes everybody dreams of. You have to take this class.
Professor Dunne is one of my favorite professors at the university. He is kind and will do his utmost to help students. He is funny and keeps the class entertaining. He is extremely enthusiastic about Astronomy. I have found this class to be really interesting. It's also pretty easy to get an A in the class!
I dont know what everyone is talking about...the professor is kind of okay but his class sucks! I hate astronomy and his class puts me to sleep. Its not easy. Dont take it.
Great professor. Very, very enthusiastic about the subject matter and you can hear it in his voice. Class isn't hard- exam q's are from past quizzes and i-clicker q's not to mention that Dunne is EXTREMELY helpful. He's also pretty funny in a nerdy way--makes the class that much more interesting. If you're gonna take Astro 100, take it with Dunne!
Very eccentric and passionate, this prof is delightfully geeky. Everything is online, you only get a grade for your best 2 out of 3 observing sessions, best 25 scores in lecture, and likewise for other assignments. The only reason to go to class is the points u get from the iClicker quizes. Study for the exams & you'll do fine. EXCELLENT GEN ED
Very easy b/c you get a page of notes for your tests. He posts notes online and there is so many opportunities to get an A. Just do the work
One of the fairest classes I've had. Dunne gives you plenty of opportunities to ace the class. There's weekly online homework, but you get two opportunities to do it. Exams can be a little tough but doable if you study. Show up to lectures to get easy Iclicker points. A few online labs but they're pretty interesting. Great class, great professor!
BEST CLASS I TOOK THIS YEAR! Weekly assessments but you get two tries, you get a double-sided cheat sheet for the midterm and final, and you have opportunity to replace midterm exam grade on the final. Dunne truly is "delightfully geeky" and I loved going to class everyday. What a gen-ed should always feel like! Take this class for phys science!
Overall was a very easy class if you go to class and pay attention. There are iclicker points. There is one midterm and a final for tests. Homework load isnt bad and is easy for the most part. Take this class for a gen ed!
Dr. Dunne is an extremely good professor. He is very passionate about the subject matter and class is enjoyable. He gives generous extra credit oppotunities and their are daily iclicker points to help boost your grade. As long as you put in a little effort this class is a very easy A. Highly recommended!
Fantastic class
This is a great class. He's a very fun teacher and makes the class awesome. Easy to get a good grade!
He is hilarious and very helpful! He explains everything very well and in a way that is interesting. I'd definitely take another class of his!
This teacher is just amazing; he is truly passionate about Astronomy. Also, his class is extremely easy which gives it another plus. For his tests you can bring in a sheet of notes to use and final is just another test. I finished with A+, and had a great time listening to him in lectures.
Very nice guy! love his class!
Simply the best professor at the U of I. His lectures are not only effective, but actually very fun. The class itself was very interesting, but Dr. D made it enjoyable. I am actually considering sitting in on this class again this semester. If you can, take ASTRO 150 with Bryan Dunne.
Amazing teacher. You dont really NEED to go to class, but I always do because I love it. The dorky humor, the mind blowing facts, the enthusiasm, this guy is awesome.
AKA Peter Griffin, BEST TEACHER! FUNNY GUY, MAKES CLASS ENJOYABLE AND SOMETHING WORTH GOING TO. Could not have asked for a better teacher.
Sadly, I got a B+ when it was an easy A course because I didn't do half of the online quizzes. I only attended half the classes and it was still extremely easy. The quizzes are just like the tests, so use them to your advantage! He's an interesting lecturer.
I'm only taking the class because I wanted to add a course mid semester and it was a second half online course. Easy is an understatement. As long as you go over the material it is not hard to grasp. The professor for his online video lecture though speaks way too slow, monotone, and pauses too long making them near impossible to go through.
Prof. Dunne is easily one of my favorite professors at this university. I look forward to going to his class three days a week (he's my discussion teacher, too.) He makes class so much fun and he makes these cheesy and relevant jokes. He keeps you interested and awake in class. He's actually the best.
Easy and enjoyable :)...I miss this class. It's one of the few classes where I learned a lot from. Just go over the homework/quiz answers for the test and you're good to go. Don't bother watching the lectures on youtube...they are far too long.
Easily one of my favorite professors on campus. He's very enthusiastic about what he teaches, and he's always in an outstanding mood and is eager to answer any questions you may have. Go to lectures! Not only are iclickers part of your grade, but the lectures are just plain fun to go to. Take this class!
Very organized. Easy A. Do the extra credit!
He is the absolute best! So enthusiastic about his job which makes learning from him that much better. Not a hard class at all either. DON'T take Celeste for your discussion section. She isn't helpful at all.
Bryan Dunne is an incredibly good professor. As I am thinking about it, I actually have never had a professor who was so enthusiastic and effective. Professor Dunne really cares about making the students enjoy and learn as much as possible in his class. I would recommend this class to anyone and everyone.
Great professor. Very enthusiastic about astronomy and is entertaining in lecture. Lets you use a double-sided note sheet during the midterms and final. A great class to take for the science gen-ed.
Professor Dunne has been, by far, my favorite professor on campus. He is extremely smart, always prepared, uses technology in lectures very effectively, is always helpful and willing to help, in such a good mood it's almost alarming, and has the funniest sense of humor! Book was cheap used & not required. Lectures were optional, but had i>clickers.
2 exams and cumulative final. 3 easy science projects. 2 reports - 3rd one for extra credit. Mandatory iclicker - every answer right is extra credit. Often curves exams about 5%. Really enthusiastic about teaching. Interesting lectures most of the time. Do the extra credit and you'll get an A
He is a overall great teacher. He is super enthusiastic and loves teaching astronomy. There is a lot of work in his classes, but he is fair with due dates. The tests are pretty hard, so you have to go to class and read the book.
Dunne is freaking awesome! Take his classes!
Incredibly funny and engaging lectures, not a dull moment.
Even though he lets students use cheatsheet on the exam, you'll find it mostly useless because exams are extremely hard. (But I think he curves grades as well)
Overall, it's an easy class. All the homework can be found online, and the labs are not too bad. He gives several extra credit opportunities, but his exams are extremely difficult. He lets you use a cheat sheet, but it doesn't help much. Even if you don't do that well on the exams, as long as you do everything else you should be fine.
Very easy midterms and exam if you had done your homework and went to lectures (I studied less than 3 hours, 3 hours, 5 hours) Lectures are enjoyable, and the professor gives off a great vibe. Easy classes, easy to follow.
I mean he's a nice guy and the weekly assignments/work load are not bad at all, but the exams are literally impossible. Cheat sheet doesn't help, and some of the questions I've never seen before in the lectures. He's not too bad but the exams are honestly HORRIBLE.
This class was pretty tough due to the exams. You did get a cheat sheet, but sometimes it was not helpful at all. You really need to know the concept. The lectures were quite long also.
Weekly online homework answers can be found online. Lectures and activities were pretty interesting. You can tell he cares about the topic. Tests aren't the hardest and aren't the easiest.
His class was interesting, homework load was fair. discussions were easy. but when exams came, they were pretty hard. wish there were practice exams instead of TA reviewing the materials.
Very enthusiastic person, but teaching style is very confusing. The materials that are on the test is often not on the study guide, you basically have to remember every bit of the stuff he says in lecture.
He talks down on you when you have a question or need clarification. He can be very rude to students. His class is easy and what you need to know is straight forward.
Pretty easy class. It doesn't require alot of understanding, but you need to be able to memorize, then A's are very possible for exams, just allow 1hr study per lecture (exams cover 7-8 lectures). Homework quizzes allow 3 attempts, so those are guaranteed 100%s. Not a hard class... getting an A but I don't feel I learned THAT much, to be honest
This was supposed to be an easy A gen ed but it was not easy. There was so much homework and the tests were really, really hard even with the cheat sheet you can use. Bryan is super nice but I just wish the exams were a little easier and that the lectures were shorter!
Online homework is easy. labs and exams are very hard, you are aloud a cheat sheet on the exam but no matter how much info you put on it the exams are still to difficult for a 100 level intro course
Very hilarious professor. Easy A class and reading doesn't matter too much.
He's very knowledgeable on the topics discussed and explains them well - doesn't just read off his power points. If you ask him a question, he almost always knows the answer off the top of his head. BONUS: HE LEAVES HIS SLIDES UP LONG ENOUGH FOR YOU TO TAKE NOTES AND NOT RUSH!! Tests aren't easy but aren't impossible, and he allows a "cheat sheet"
Took ASTR 150 as a non-astro major, really enjoyed it! First project was a little math-heavy for my taste but Prof. Dunne is extremely approachable and up for adapting to students' needs, so definitely chat with him if you have any questions or concerns! Lectures are awesome; he's a lot of fun to listen to. Two thumbs up.
Tests were so hard for a 100 level class-even with a cheat sheet. The homework was so long and boring. Do not take!! :(
Lots of homework but they were spread out over the entire semester and were fairly easy so long as you show up and read the articles assigned. There is no $100+ textbook to buy and the course material is fascinating. Powerpoint presentations and NO TA section which is EXCELLENT. Significant extra credit opportunity and lowest homework is dropped
he is amazing!! if you attend the lectures and pay attention, you are sorted.
He's such an awesome teacher even if you're interested or not about astronomy you should definitely take his class it's not hard and very easy to get an A+. There needs to be more teachers like Professor Dunne that are very passionate about what they are teaching about!
This class was interesting. However, if you're not a math/ science person like me, you should probably find another Nat Sci & Quant. II class. Unless you plan weeks ahead, professor is ALWAYS busy. My TA is Cail Daley and he's the type of guy who know a lot but not how to explain. THE EXAMS ARE REALLY HARD even w/ a cheat sheet. Good luck :(
Professor Dunne is so nice & tries really hard to make lectures fun! 10/10 stand up guy
he good :)
Very easy class and Prof. Dunne is a good lecturer who is passionate about what he teaches. If you are interested in astronomy, then you will simply love him, but for me, I found the lectures quite boring since it is not my forte. The classwork for ASTRO 150 is very easy and consists of simple writing for article summaries and packback.
He's such a dad, lots of dad jokes. He is VERY excited about the stuff he's teaching and does a good job of teaching it, he's very energetic and knowledgeable. it's pretty clear that he loves his job. He does give a few out of class activities and one off-campus that you have to attend.
He is such a great professor, he is very passionate about astronomy and he always makes lectures interesting and makes the content easier to understand! He has great jokes! He is a great professor overall.
Great lecturer, make funny jokes during the lectures. Although somtimes do not show up timely on his office hour, but still patiently explains everything. Homework usually takes more than 4 hours a week if you want extra credit.
I took Stars and Galaxies with Dunne and it was absolutely amazing. An easy A as long as you show up and do your work. I never once looked at the textbook. Dunne is great and if you have him for a discussion section youre guaranteed to get an A.
Dunne is very funny and chill. Quizzes are all online and you get to use one sheet of paper (front and back) on exams. He only assigns a few homework problems that can be tricky but can be figured out. There are observation sessions that you have to go to but those are easy points. Discussion sections is just working in groups on an assignment.
Tough grader
Great and interesting lectures, and as long as you read over the PowerPoint slides, you are sorted. His lectures and slides are very helpful for the homework and tests, and he gives you lots of extra credits in this class. Exams aren't difficult and he allows you an 8.5 by 11 piece of paper for cheat sheets on exams. Easy A+
Clearly very passionate about astronomy and it rubs off. If you go through the readings and PowerPoint slides in the online lectures, you'll be fine. Clear study guides that really make tests much easier, and he doesn't use the camera for Proctorio which is so nice, we even get open notes. Sometimes long readings but the book isn't a challenge
Lecture content is good and interesting. Unfortunately, required Packback discussion forum which was a complete waste of time and money.
I love Prof Dunne, he is so sweet and genuinely loves teaching. I assume this class would be better in person, but online there are about 60 p of reading a week with required annotations. Lectures also take about 2 hours total. However, learned a lot and loved the class. As long as you take notes on the reading and lectures you'll do well.
Guy is interesting and knows what hes talking about. Class gets bogged down by requiring perusall though
Genuinely nice professor and tries to be funny and interactive. He answers questions and does after class reviews before exams (4 exams worth 35 percent of grade). Its a very assignment based class which is rarer in college. Takes more time than other geneds but worth it. Content is so cool. All about space disasters and how they will/do affect u
ASTR122, bad grading. Don't expect a good TA. Don't expect the professor to be kind to you especially if its over grading disputes. PERSUAL GRADES MATTER AND HE GRADES THEM HARSH!!
Prof. Dunne is very enthusastic about the subject and he brings that into lectures. We had required participation through ClassQuestion during lectures and there are Perusall readings (my least favorite thing ever) and homework assignments due weekly. Honestly a lot of work for a gened but you can get an A as long as you put in the bare minimum.
Prof. Dunne is fantastic, I can not recommend his class enough. Lectures were interesting and engaging thanks to the way he presents. He's extremely enthusiastic, and shares that with students. I was genuinely excited to come to lecture each day. The class is easy with an average workload, it's not stressful at all. Take this class if possible!
As long as you pay attention in class, it's pretty easy to do well. Lots of reading to do every week but it's all from the assigned textbook so you should probably be reading it anyway. His presentations are on point, they make the concepts crystal clear. He's my academic advisor as well and just awesome overall. Also absolutely hilarious.
Very passionate and has many extra credit opportunities on tests and outside of. About 2 hrs of reading a week, but is interesting stuff that can be pounded out on a Sunday. Does Zoom during class so u can attend at home.
Professor Dunne was incredible. Truly cares about the material he is teaching and it helps that it is interesting. Was super helpful with personal situations going on throughout semester and was always very caring. One of the only classes I have taken that was mainly homework based, easy assignments, help bring up grade if did bad on the exams.
Dunne is pretty chill. You can clearly tell he's passionate about astronomy. I've never really been into astronomy, but he definitely made the course interesting.
Very good class although you do need to know your material for the test. You are given a calc and a sheet of paper of notes for the test.
Dunne was a good professor to have for my first semester here. Cares about the material he's teaching. Class is mainly homework based with 4 exams (lowest weighted half) so it's more time consuming than other gen eds. Pretty easy to do well if you review the lecture slides and do the homework.
Nice professor who delivers engaging lectures. I enjoyed the course because of his lectures and plan to take more of his courses even though I'm not an astro major. This particular class is an easy A as long as you complete all of the homework. He allows you to bring a piece of paper with notes to exams.
Engaging speaker who really puts a lot of love into his class. Fairly accessible if you need to ask questions after class or by email.
nice professor, very time consuming for a gen ed but gives out a lot of extra credit. Tests are okay, you really need to know the material to get a decent grade. Lecture heavy and study guides only help a little so its hard to know what will be on the test. slides, homeworks and study guide do not align wahtsoever. very difficult to study for exams
Very enjoyable class. He let you use a cheat sheet on the midterms. It was pretty easy overall just some weekly writing you have to do that's not that annoying.
