Would not take this professor. Very hard to understand and you will never be prepared for what is going to be on quizzes or tests. Requires textbook and the connect code which you will never use.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Hardest class I've ever taken. You can't understand him. He goes way too fast. The only grades are tests and quizzes which are stupidly hard. I've never hated a class more.
Very hard to understand and doesn't explain the concepts enough. Anatomy is a tough course and he makes it tougher. Has very little patience for your questions so beware of "wasting his time". Study guides require a lot of work, and are not always helpful when it comes to the quizzes and tests. He is an over all pretty rude professor.
Lectures are difficult to understand, he is very unclear with what he is trying to explain and what he wants out of his students. You have to purchase an access code that you will hardly use. The test and quizzes are extremely difficult but sometimes he gives extra assignments for credit to buffer your grade, but above all he's quite rude.
His lectures are not very helpful as he does not explain well or highlight crucial materials. Its very hard to prepare for exams as you can not be sure what he is going to put on them. He schedules quizzes to overlap with exams rather having them in between exams. I find him to be fairly rude as if he is doing you a personal favor by having a class
One of the worst Proffessor's I've ever had. He is not professional in the slightest. He does not care about individuals he also has a short temper so will go off on you for no reason
He does not explain the content clearly at all and is very rude, and inconsiderate to people. He had office hours that were not very flexible. When I met with him outside of class to discuss a recent exam, he directly put me down about my grade and results of my exam. Everything I learned from this class was from the labs and from reading the text.
Barely any homework, only homework is in the first month on connect and then nothing after that. One test was so hard that one of the highest scores was a 68%. Gives assignments instead of extra credit when scores are bad. Only grades are quizzes and tests.
Lecture was very boring and difficult to understand. He's not good at explaining or going into detail. He shoves WAY too much on a PowerPoint and often doesn't finish them. Tests were hard and he had random pop quizzes. Also had to pay for an online homework site we used maybe 2 times..
His syllabus states he will adjust exam scores if the class average falls below 74%, it also states you will be assigned to a group and take quizzes as a group. Neither of these things are true. He is rude to students and is unclear in lecture. His lectures do not help with exams in the slightest.
Dr. Essien definitely had a barrier between himself and the students. He is so incredibly knowledgeable of anatomy, that he fails to realize 201 is not an advanced course. He piles so much information into one power point. The class itself should be taught over 2 semesters.
can't even understand the man. lectures are pointless for that reason, but id still advise going because there are rare pop quizzes (trust me you nee those points) and it gives you a chance to go through the slides. the tests are VERY difficult. he gives little to no homework or chances for extra points. very hard class BECAUSE of the prof.
Dr. Essien has a very thick accent that makes it hard to understand during lectures, especially early in the morning. He also uses pop quizzes as attendance during the semester. Beware of his tests as they are very difficult.
Absolutely awful. He is a clearly intelligent professor but you cannot understand his lectures. I was in the class where he hit a student and then kicked him out; there were no repercussions for this. He is a very angry individual and he should not be teaching anywhere. The material is tough on its own but he makes it exponentially more difficult.
He is a terrible teacher. You cannot understand anything he says at all. The lectures are pointless but there are many pop quizzes and there aren't many grades in there, so it's worth going. This class was extremely hard too. Take someone else.
I tried giving Dr. Essien the benefit of the doubt in the after seeing previous reviews, my mistake. He got very rude with me over email, as I had already met with him in person and emailed him before. Do not even bother talking to him, he seems so bothered. Work hard in lab and your grade should be alright. He has pop quizzes too, so beware.
Took his class twice. I went in to see him about retaking a quiz and he made me cry. VERY rude to students. His accent is thick so you can't understand lecture, but if you don't go you'll miss a pop quiz. Could've been a more pleasant class, but he makes it horrendous. DO WELL IN LAB, it'll save your grade. Study the PowerPoints religiously.
If you are looking for a great professor to teach you anatomy, this is not your class. The guy has NO idea how to prepare you for his exams. Go to study sessions every time they are available they help out. You will learn from the session more than the actual lecture.
Essien was not helpful when I asked questions and his class was difficult because he didn't explain anything. He read off the PowerPoint slides. This class would not be that hard if he explained things during lecture. Would not recommend taking him.
Dr. Essien is next to impossible to understand due to his accent and mumbling. Lectures are rushed and are entirely based on the powerpoint. Very difficult to take notes. Quizzes are very frequent. Class time is wasted as class finishes usually 10-20 minutes early. The study sessions helped a lot and are absolutely necessary in passing.
This class is extremely difficult. I would study for hours to prepare for the tests and quizzes and i would still do poorly. You can barely understand a word he says and he is VERY rude to his students.
I am a good test taker and I got a low C because I didn't study much. Dr. Essien really cared. He told me to send in my study guides after I finish them and he would color code them on what I should study. YOU HAVE TO GO TO STUDY SESSIONS. He tells you exactly what you should study. You get what you give with him. He has an accent but it's fine.
He is a really good teacher, the class is difficult but you have to work with him and also put in the effort on your own and I assure you, you will pass.
Dr. Essien was hard to understand at first, but after the first week or two it wasn't hard to understand. Read his powerpoints over and over again because a lot of the test questions come right from there. I used the book one time but did not need it at all. DO WELL IN LAB!! Study for practicals as much as possible, they save your overall grade.
He says he likes to give pop quizzes, but he rarely gives them. You are graded on only a few homework assignments and quizzes/tests, so study all the time. Try to know the PowerPoints before class/lab because he moves quickly and you get out early every class. If you have him for lab, good luck (he's strict)! Get ready to teach yourself anatomy.
Very hard to understand him. I got a tutor which helped a lot. Not a lot of homework, but study heavy class. Gives pop quizzes so you kinda have to go to class.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. smells bad. like really bad. rude af constantly. Not to scare you but I went into class and cried the first day. He yells at everyone and expects you to know things before he teaches it. He is creepy to girls when they go to his office and hits on them. Tests are almost impossible. Everyone cheats on the quizzes.
Here is the deal, Dr. Essien is not great, but not terrible. Dr Essien rushes through most lectures, and gives really tough quizzes that are nearly impossible to pass if you dont go to his study sessions. However, if you reach out to him and actually try, he will see your effort and help you out. The help Dr Essien gives is why I am passing.
Tests are tough, requires a ton ton of studying in order to do well, gives pop quizzes often
His lectures are long and boring. He is extremely hard to understand. I went to his office hours once and he was very rude to me. The test are basically impossible.
Be willing to put in a LOT of work. There are pop quizzes and he is not afraid to give them right after a test. Always be prepared. He is also very hard to understand due to his accent and he speaks at a fast pace. The class is rushed, he usually finishes in 30 minutes. The tests are almost completely based on the powerpoints. He is also very rude.
Dr. Essien gave pop quizzes frequently and his tests are really tough. I studied a ton for his class and never received anything above a B on them. He rarely gives out extra credit so don't rely on it to save your grade. He rushes through his lectures which makes him hard to understand because of his thick accent. Try to take a different professor!
Dr. Essien seems very scary at first and intimidated me. If you are struggling (most do) TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! If he sees you are trying, he will help you. He yells at those who he sees potential in and wants to help; its all about the way you look at it. He will do anything to help you, just ask. His study sessions are crucial!!
Speaks english, but is hard to understand MOST of the time. He goes super fast during lecture so pay attention. Attendance isn't necessary, but he does have random pop quizzes every once in a while so try and go. Study guides are helpful but the tests are more in depth. study, study, study. if you think you've studied enough, keep studying :')
He is hard to understand (his accent) at first, but once you get passed that he's fine. It is anatomy, which is the study of structure. The other posts say he goes through the material quickly, but all anatomy is is, "the gallbladder is in this region" then next slide. It is hard to elaborate on this subject. Would take him again.
He was very difficult to understand, especially at first. Tests were difficult and the study guides barely helped. I ended up getting an A- by balancing it out with my lab, which was much easier. You'll have to study a lot, and show up for class because of pop quizzes. I would recommend taking a different professor.
His class is definitely tough, but it's not impossible. He seems condescending but as long as you seem to care about your grade and go to his office hours, he's pretty understanding and actually really nice. You'll have to study every day for him, but it isn't hard to pass. Read over the lectures before class. It will help with quizzes.
The first day of class actually the first couple of weeks you will be overwhelmed mostly because you can understand a thing he says. You can get an A in this class you just have to work really hard and not let his accent ruin how well you do in the class. personally I got the book but you don't need to just look at the powerpoints.
First off, DO NOT take Dr. Essien. He is extremely difficult to understand and you essentially have to teach yourself based off powerpoints. I really do NOT recommend him. He is very unapproachable and not very helpful at all. The only thing that is helpful is you can send your study guide to him & he will send it back with key points highlighted.
A lot of students give him a bad rap, but he can be very concerned for you and your grade. He tries to help you, especially if you show him you are putting in the effort. He is willing to meet with you whenever you can. YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR IT! His tests are not easy and he can be hard to understand, but ultimately, he is a good guy.
This class is designed to be difficult. While Essein's lecture does not appeal to most students, his accessibility outside of class and his drive to help you succeed really make him a great professor. He can make you laugh for sure as well, with his dad-like jokes and mannerisms. However, it does take about a week to acclimatize to his accent.
He isn't the best professor. I didn't have issues understanding him, I had issues with the fact his powerpoints were so jam packed with information you didn't know what was important or not. Lab will save you and be prepared for quizzes. Always reread the lecture the night before class. Some extra credit, but not much. Don't rely on it.
He is extremely intelligent and a very good teacher. Be engaged, think along with him, and ask smart questions. Get the most out of this course by putting in effort during class to understand the material and relate it to things you already know. He will take time to answer any questions you have & elaborate on your interests. Lighthearted too.
Very hard to understand. Attendance isnt required but good luck passing without showing up. He is very rude to students but will help you before tests if you go to his office. Overall he is very intelligent but his lectures are so packed with info its hard to decipher whats on the test and what isnt.
This professor made anatomy extremely hard. I love anatomy and have taken two years of it in high school and still struggle with the class. Lecture is him reading off the slides and hes hard to get a hold of outside of class. He also doesnt try to pronounce words correctly so hes hard to understand. The study guide is useless.
He's intelligent, but he has long lectures that are PACKED with information. It's a heavy course. He's hard to understand, and during lectures he talks so fast and it's hard to understand. Review sessions didn't really help for me, he just went over the slides again. If you're taking this class, GOOD LUCK. He gives pop quizzes, too.
Essien is by far the most difficult professor I've ever taken. His accent makes it VERY difficult to understand his lectures and he is not understanding or helpful. He holds review sessions for every test but literally just rereads the powerpoint from his lecture. If you are not prepared to teach yourself the material, do not take Essien.
He is not that bad of a professor but his tests are very very hard. You can study for hours and still not receive that good of a grade on the tests. He is willing to help you if you email him. The lab portion is pretty easy if you are good at memorizing things. His accent isn't terrible if you already understand the material.
You have to put in a lot of studying for this class. I never opened the book, but the PowerPoints would be in depth enough. His accent can really throw you off for a few weeks, but youll get used to it. Hes often is available for office hours and will tell you what to study for the exams/whats on it. Beware- come too often and he will hit on you
The exams are super hard but make sure you go to his office hours. Also make sure to attend his exam review sessions. He goes over all the material that will be on the exams. He is very willing to help if you show that you care about the class. He is super rude and mean to students and made a couple of them cry.
I put in most of my time this semester studying for this class. Dr. Essien goes through his lectures very quickly and it can be hard to understand him with his accent. My GA for lab was the one that taught me most of the material for this class and helped me get a decent grade.
Dr. Essien is a smart Prof with extensive knowledge of his teaching, and very ready to teach beyond the classroom. He mentored and encouraged me through out the semester. I am grateful that I have such a kind and smart Prof. I appreciate him. Thanks a lot
Dr. Essien is one of the worst professors I've ever had. I took his class twice and I still barely got by, especially as a freshman. He is lecture heavy, and the tests are difficult. I tried to go to his office hours and he told me I was never going to be in the health profession and made me cry. DO NOT recommend. Take Kelly-Worden.
he seems nice and wants to help students but doesnt know how to teach. his power points are confusing since english is probably his second language, he has a thick accent that i still to this day cant understand, and you can study for his tests for hours and still wont get a good grade on them. i have an A in the lab and a D in lecture...
At first, it is difficult to understand him due to his accent, but you get used to it. Make sure to go to study sessions and office hours to review quizzes. Lab is simply memorization but requires a lot of time purely because of sheer amount of things you need to know. Lab also has weekly quizzes over that week's and the previous week's materials.
Hes honestly not that bad. He is NOT the best by any means but the class is manageable. I was worried at first because everyone during orientation and at the beginning of the year was like oh you have essien?GOOD LUCK. But w that being said as long as you study A LOT you will be fine. I never went to office hours and my lowest test was an 88...
At the beginning of the semester, I heard many bad things about him. He is hard to understand at times. Most of the lecture is spent trying to understand what he is saying instead of learning what he is saying. I taught myself all of the material outside of class. There are several pop quizzes. His exams are hard even if you study a lot.
I was really worried when I got Essien because of what everyone said, but his class was not too bad. The lecture is defiantly not easy, but lab will raise your grade. My biggest advice is to go to his office hours! The study session will also help you on the exams. His exams were always difficult for me. Overall, his class is hard but can be done.
He is a horrible teacher. He acts like he is there to help but when you ask for help he doesnt really help. He goes over power points in class but they dont really help with the test. I would NOT recommend. Also he waits till last minute to put in all grades.
Dr. Essien really is not that bad. Anatomy is a course that you just have to put the work and time into in order to do well. Go to class and really try to pay attention because he gives a lot of hints about what will be on the exams, ASK QUESTIONS, and take the time to actually study.
Dr. Essien is a fine professor. He can be hard to understand but he does supply you with the powerpoints to follow along with his lectures. He is great with his office hours and will help you with anything you need. There are pop quizzes that he sometimes turns into extra credit. In class quizzes are easy but tests are quite difficult.
Hes a decent and sweet professor, but his teaching methods are very poor. He doesnt use the textbook and gives one fill in the blank homework per week. That is not enough to give a test in my opinion and the tests are extremely difficult because they hardly follow the homework. There are also no study guides. I would never take this class again.
I feel like he doesn't understand simple questions i ask him.
This class made me want to drop out. His class is very hard! I took notes actively and attending the lectures on Zoom and I was still lost. I ended up withdrawing from the class because I was doing so poorly. Don't ask him questions, either! He's super rude and will literally call you stupid and say "this is easy stuff!"
I don't like him I really don't you can barley understand the man like he is so confusing I did not pass
I would never take this class again, it was extremely difficult with this teacher. He never really taught us, just read the powerpoints and I would recommend you read the textbook because the tests contain a lot of questions from the book.
honestly, i do not recommend him. He was nice until he started yelling but at least he gave me enough extra credit (attend class) to pass(ish)
i did not like this professor. he made things harder than they needed to be, especially being an online class during covid. my emails were met with snarky replies that didn't actually help me. he took attendence for grade. i'd recommend a different professor if possible. labs were easy though.
I personally did not care for this professor. He is hard to understand and goes through his lectures way faster than needed. Everyone says to go to him in his office hours but that isnt much either i tried, and nothing helped. Be prepared
Essien has an accent so sit towards the front and adapt to it, dont complain. He reads off power points but since theres so much material, theres nothing more he can do. You really have to learn how to help yourself in his class. Hes a professor, not your parent. Hes not going to hold your hand through everything. Grow up and learn how to study.
I've never gotten a C in my entire academic career, and this class will be the first time I receive one. I worked so hard in this class as well. My other grades are 85%'s and higher, so the fact that I have more than a 10% difference is a reflection of the professor. He makes his students feel stupid. His study guides don't match the exams either.
Very heavy accent, tests do not match study guides, does not teach in lectures just simply reads of powerpoints.
Ive not received a C+ as a final grade, but i did in his course. He rushes through his lectures every day while telling you to take notes the whole time. I wish I had done this but I recommend printing off the lecture slides before the lecture. I encourage you to go to his study sessions as he gives extra credit and tells you many test questions.
Dr. Essien is a kind soul but professor wise, isnt the best. Hes a very intelligent man but fails to educate his students properly. He rushes and skips through information. If you take the class I suggest printing lecture notes off before lecture and write down on the printed notes everything he says.
people complain about Essien but its really not a difficult class if you put in the work. if you read the lectures and come to class you will do fine on exams. He is willing to help you if you come to his office hours and show genuine concern. there are few other grades than quizzes/exams so beware of that. I really enjoyed his class!
Everyone complains about Dr. Essien, but ANAT 201 is just a very hard class. You have to put in lots of hours outside of class in order to do well, but if you come to class and show him you work hard and you want to do well by attending study sessions, he will help your grade. This is a tough class, so spend time every week studying.
Very hard class, which isn't his fault. He reads off powerpoints for lectures which I hate, but I recommend printing off the slides before class and writing notes on it. The exams are difficult, but he gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Exams use lockdown browser with webcam. Overall, he's a nice dude and wants to see you pass the class.
SHOW UP, GO SEE HIM, GO TO LAB, he gives extra credit!!! You have got to put in the work for this class, it is not an easy A and he seems harsh but he is actually very nice and helpful. Sometimes, yes he makes you feel like you're dumb but let it roll off your back. He is very helpful. VISIT him after quizzes, quiz questions are usually on exams.
I took this classes thinking it wouldn't be terrible since I took it in high school, but that was not the case. If you end up getting Essien as a teacher please switch to a different one or you will be switching your major. If I wouldn't have been in his class I would probably still be a nursing major. Go to the SI she will help and get EC!!
Dr. Essien can be very hard to understand at first due to his accent. He gave out a total of 40 extra credit points in lecture and 10 in lab. I wouldn't recommend taking the lab with him, as he expects you to come to lab with the notes already filled in. His lectures can be fast paced. Show up, pay attention, and memorize the lab.
GO TO CLASS, TALK TO HIM, PUT IN THE WORK, STUDY ALOT!! if you do all of these things you can pass this class with an easy A. Dr. Essien is an amazing person, and truthfully wants the best for his students. He wants you to pass and perform well and is willing to help you if you need it. This course is hard, you have to study and put in the time.
GO TALK TO HIM SHOW HIM YOU CARE AND YOU WILL PASS EASY. he is caring and will help you if you show that you care.
Personally, Essien was my favorite professor so far here at BSU. If you guys are trying to cheat and float your way through college than this class will reflect that. You must show up every day. You must go see him, whether you have a question or not, to show him that you care. You must study EVERY DAY. Put in the work and you will get an A.
Terrible professor the test are impossible nothing from the study guides are on the test.
If there was an option for a zero, I would have given that. I am a straight "A" student and made the dean's list last semester, but yet am struggling to get through his class. Essien yells at every student that walks in even one minute late, makes you feel dumb by saying his material is "easy", and his quizzes and tests are impossible to study for.
Dear god. If you can get another one please try. There's tests all the time. Literally all the time. I think I've failed every test I've taken lol. The tests are also impossible. Go to the study sessions, he'll give you extra credit towards exam. Good luck and godspeed.
Essien was honestly slightly below average. Good person, very pasisonate. Difficult to follow sometimes. He skips slides or info (not on quizzes/tests), so it is essential to be there in-person to catch what's important. Extra credit is given when you ask for it. Plenty of help as he's available nearly 24/7. Go to his review sessions.
Relies Mostly on powerpoint lectures, but tries to spice it up with jokes and such. I stop reading the textbook about halfway through the class as everything he wants you to know is on his powerpoints. Lab is pretty easy if you put in the effort!
This class is slightly difficult, but remember it's a weed out course so it's meant to be harder, it's not impossible. Essien has accent, but it's really not hard to understand. To succeed in his class, I recommend printing his slides and paying attention to the red text on them- very important. He appreciates those that put in effort.
This is nothing like an anatomy class I have taken before. The test do not even feel like they are testing me for the anatomy. So so many tests and quizzes. The lectures are boring and difficult due to his heavy accent, I miss out on extra credit because I can't understand him. The one time I tried to talk to him he wasn't the nicest.
Definitely a difficult class, and Essien recognizes that. It's hard but if you show up, do your homework, attend all lab and study sessions, attend office hours, and maintain a personal relationship with him you will be on the right track. This class easily eats up all your free time, but if you put in the hard work it will pay off.
I took Dr. Essien my freshman year, I can honestly say it was very challenging. The course load was heavy and being a freshman taking the course it seemed like too much to soon. But I will say that if you show that you care by going to study sessions, the study lab, and by going to office hours. He will go out of his way to help you.
Essien was a very good professor he took the time to meet with students and help them do good and pass the course if you put in the effort you will pass. The exams were hard but if you meet with him and take good notes you will do good.
If you show up to class he will give you TONS of extra credit at the end. He took my grade from a 76 to a 89 just because i did not miss a class. His lectures can be very hard to understand due to his accent and explanation of topics but if you ask him for help he will help you. although i HATED his teaching methods he wants to see you succeed.
ANAT201 with Professor Essien is a challenging but rewarding course. The material is dense, but attending study sessions and using resources like unstuckstudy can really help. Stay engaged and you'll get a lot out of it.
Genuinely the worst class I have ever had. Ending up withdrawing. Dr essien is not a great teacher, he is quite rude and makes it incredibly hard to pass. There's a 25Q practice quiz, 50Q exam, and 50Q practical within a week of eachother. He has ruined learning anatomy for me. Don't pick this instructor. You'll probably fail or want to give up.
Show up every day, use Anki to prep for your practical exams, and study for his lecture exams. His class is difficult but it's enjoyable and not insanely difficult. He will give you extra credit just cuz he feels like it, and more if you ask. If you put in effort and he sees that? you will pass.
Moved through lectures quickly and would say “take note” but wouldn't say what to take note of. Would go off on tangents and then say you didn't need to know any of it. Never knew what would be on exams, which were the majority of your grade. Hard to understand at times due to accent. Very willing to help if you asked. Go to the study room and SI!!
His lectures are boring, and you don't learn anything from them. He reads off slides, and it's hard to understand due to his thick accent. The exam used to be online; however, quizzes and exams are now held in person with a lockdown browser camera. If you email him, he does not even read it thoroughly, and he can be very rude if he doesn't like you
His class is really hard and test heavy. But if you show up to class and go to him when you need help he will make sure you will pass the class. He brought my grade from a 61 to a 77, because I went to him and asked for help. He is hard to understand. Just take notes do the extra credit and go to SI session and study labs and you will be fine
He is a really nice professor and is willing to work with students outside of class. He encourages people to use the anatomy room to study to get a better grasp on it. He is super nice and makes me feel welcomed despite how many people are in the lecture room. He knows how hard anatomy is to learn and just really cares about his students success.
Highly don't recommend! Extremely rude! Lectures are confusing & his lab book has numerous errors in it! Attendance matter! He doesn't respond to emails! He stayed extra points will be given from attending study room… UNETHICAL!
