He's one of the best teachers I've ever had. He helped me a lot with my papers. His class can be challanging. He expects a lot. But he makes you want to do better. Overall, I think the whole class pretty much liked him a lot!
Ghent is badass
Papers are rather difficult, and he's a tough grader. Class is very interesting. Do the reading because you have quizzes.
I LOVE THIS MAN!
Bryan is super cute in that literature teacher kinda way. He's very helpful if you ask too. OH, and I think he's single. . .
He was great!!! Papers were a tad difficult but he would meet with you and go over what you needed to change to get the paper to an A. He forces you to do better and makes you want to do better. He is funny, and out there. The best professor I have ever had.
Ghent is...Ghent. He is brutally honest and plays around and talks very much, often asking you to tell him to shut up. Despite that I think the class is slightly difficult, he is so helpful, that as long as you show up, do the work and go to him when you need help, you'll be fine. He truly just wants you to learn and question things more.
Ghent is an amazing professor. His class is always interesting and keeps everyone interested. He lets you talk and he is open to all ideas. The papers are difficult to some degree but he is more than happy to help you make it better. He made me love writing more than I ever did before. TAKE GHENT!!!
Really, really cool guy. Has a great sense of humor and makes topics interesting. I have to admit he does grade pretty difficult though. He will meet with you and revise two of your essays to help you out. He was a tough grader, but I have to admit that I became such a better writer after taking his class. Take him if you want to improve!!!
brutally honest guy...pretty laid back but still has high expectations from students...A papers have to truly be EARNED...but def easy to get a B
He is the best CRTW professor out there!!! Trust me I know I've taking this class with other professors before. He actually takes the time to teach you. Unlike other professors who expect you to know everything before the semester starts.. I became a better writer and thinker b/c of Ghent. If you sign up for someone elses class change to Ghent so y
You will learn a lot!!
Great teacher but very blunt. Not your conventional teacher but very good and making students think. Not an easy proff but he will definitely improve your critical thinking skills.
Mr. Ghent is a very good teacher. Although, he wants your paper to be absolutly original, which is almost impossible when there is 90 other papers he is grading. His grading is very hard. A C is a good paper that meets all of the requirements. An A paper is an extroardinary paper and in my class I believe he only gave 2 or 3 a's on papers.
Dude is the best teacher at winthrop. Funniest teacher ever. Gets outside the conventional "classroom" setting. Makes youu think while making you laugh.
Hard class-make sure you know your MLA as Ghent is very detail oriented! All opinions are respected, most of all his....Become current with movies..this guy is a movie buff! Fun class-great rapport with the students.
Very great teacher. I had him for ACAD and he had a lot to teach you. Do your work and actually talk to him and you'll do fine. Also, Do not skip class. He won't hesitate to fail you based on attendance.
tons of discussion in the class, and the papers are graded a bit intensely, but he accepts rough drafts and makes clear what you can improve on. He's hilarious, and always seems to have a story about something. He's extremely opinionated, so if you're offended easily, I would be careful. Great professor. I'm gonna take him again.
He is awesome. I went to him for help and always helped me. his class is so interesting. he loves to help students. but you do have to try your hard and put effort to recieve good grades on your paper. the grade you get you truly earned it. i love him. he is funny and just great.
Craziest professor ever! Loved him, extremely entertaining. I learned more in his class than any other class I have ever taken at Winthrop or College of Charleston! It is a harder class because it is so deep, but Mr. Ghent really knows how to get and keep your attention as well as presenting the material, he breaks everything down for you.TAKE IT!
I was dreading CRTW. Ghent made the class worthwhile AND fun! He really knows what he is teaching and realizes that we don't want to be lectured at all day. The class discussions were very interesting. Even though he doesn't take attendance at the end, class participation is a HUGE part of the final grade and he counts that the whole semester.
Ghent is awesome. I was scared of him and the class at first, but by the end I was sad the class was over. He's really funny and crates a fun atmostphere. He's really smart and will do everything he can to help you if you ask him.
Ghent is awesome. I've taken him for CRTW and HMXP and he was great in both. Super funny, a gigantic hippie, and going to his class is always good for learning and laughing. He's obviously liberal (which is fine with me), but he is great at being objective and looking at issues from all sides. Can be a tough grader, but that just pushes you harder.
Ghent is crazy & hilarious. You do use both the Reference Guide & the Reading Critically, Writing Well books (I tried getting away with just having both!) Make you read the articles, write in the margins, define the words you don't know, and participate in discussions. The class is based on 4 essays, one of which is in-class. Take time on them!
His is very laid back, it's the grading scale/rubric for the course that will cause you to have to repeat CRTW. The course is extrememly hard, yet he can be very lenientand always avaliable to help you, esp. when ur scholarship depends on it!!!!
I was absolutely terrified of this class at the beginning of the semester. He makes it sound like he's the hardest grader ever, yet, I did a lot better than I thought I was. He's funny and awkward and he makes the class fun. It's definitely not easy but it's doable.
This professor is very slack, he loses papers and does not turn things on the day he say he will turn it in. Overall the class is easy. But if you want to learn and make something out of the class, I advise you to choose another professor.
Ghent is amazing. I loved having him for writing 101. He's a hard grader but he makes the class fun and he makes you feel welcomed after the initial hardness. He wants you to talk and that's a way to get cool points. He's laid back and willing to work with you. I wanted him for hmxp & crtw but his class fills up fast. Take him if you can!
This is a hard course. I took it in the 3-wk Maymester, so we were really rushed. It seemed like he tried to make it as easy as possible while still holding you to the high standards required. He is willing to help you if you need it. Participation is a big part of your grade. Overall, S/U the class but take Ghent!
He is a tough grader, but he helps you learn how to write. He has a great sense of humor. TAKE HIM!!!
Ghent is awesome. You learn so much in his class and i don't regret taking him. He's ridiculously intimidating, and he's a tough grader, but taking him is so worth it. If you're lazy, don't take him. Bottom line. Other than that, you'll learn so much more than just how to write a good paper. Great sense of humor and makes class fun.
A tough grader, but really helpful when you need it. He's sarcastic and funny, and makes usually uninteresting topics fun. Do the reading in the book, and annotate it!
So... Prof. Ghent should be cool. He is pretty young and mostly chill. But I dreaded his class every morning; though I found the discussion topics interesting Ghent is both rude and egotistical. Yea, he is funny sometimes but it's only when he isn't busy insulting his students and talking about himself in the third person.
Mr. Ghent is awesome. His class was interesting and he knew what he was talking about. He's a really hard grader but you can always talk to him about your essay and he will give you feedback and sometimes let you rewrite it for a higher grade. Writing 101 is a hard class in general so I'm really glad I had Mr. Ghent.
Ghent... first of all, hes SO HOT. Secondly, he makes you work for your grade, but he helps you clearly understand what you did wrong and how to improve it. I loved him. Be prepared for MANY curse words though lol
Great Prof, great person. At first a little scary, but he's honestly is the best. Of course your not going to make all A's out the bat, but he lets you know what you're doing wrong and I recommend you go to his office hrs for help! Very sarcastic, laid back, and down to earth. To know him, is to love him.
He is just a really hard teacher. In my opinion he took that class WAYYYY to seriously!
He is a tough grader but will make you think. If you don't participate in class, you really won't get a lot of ideas and thoughts for assignments. He will help, but he won't come to you; you will HAVE to go to him.
Ghent is a great guy. He holds you to high standards but is willing to help no matter what. He may poke a little fun at you (and curse a bit) but when it comes down to it, he is willing to extend deadlines and help his students. He is very understanding that you have lives OUTSIDE of class. Talk to him, participate in class, and you're good to go!
I could see why some people would like him, but his style just didn't work for me. If you're wanting to use a credit to hear someone basically tell you his life or whatever random thought pops into his head then it's a good class, but if you're wanting to improve your writing or just learn something new it's really not. Not a hard class, not for me
Professor Ghent is AWESOME!! He may come accross as rude but he is hilarious. Read the assigned work so you could participate in class. He loves discussion and he wants to know how his students feel towards topics! He is very clear on what he wants to see in the papers, he made me a better person & writer. I'd take him again most def!!
Bryan made this class SO enjoyable, I loved coming to class. The entire thing is discussion on what we read so don't skip out on reading (I didn't mind I thought the readings were pretty interesting). Tough grader but definitely willing to help and absolutely hilarious. I love this man. I hope to take him for CRTW as well.
He's an all around great guy. He's funny and tries to make the class engaging but expects you to be paying attention, doing the readings, and have your works done. He's there to help if you have questions and loves discussing ideas with the class. After taking his CRTW class I feel more confident in my writing and ideology. Would definitely retake.
Very funny teacher. He really cares about his students. If you need help do not wait. He is always willing to help as long as you want help. Make sure to do all of the readings as it is the main part of the class.
Ghent seems cool and funny at first, but in reality he is just rude. Harsh grader on papers for terrible reasons. Asks questions to the class that have no answers and he can't even answer. His class isn't too much work but don't expect to make a good grade if you take him either.
Ghent sees everything. Some say he's downright evil. He's got what it takes to be a legend. He's got a marvelous persona.
Ghents a tough grader, but he always tells you exactly what he expects beforehand. Lots of reading, but other than that he makes the class really enjoyable.
Ghent is the best! He is a tough grader but he does give great feedback and gives you chances to turn in your papers early for him to look at ahead of time. He is also really funny and i looked forward to class every time! He jokes a lot but he doesn't mean what he says, it's just his humor so don't take it to heart.
Love Professor B. He's a funny guy in class but can be serious when necessary. Really cares about students and wants them to aucces in the class. As long as you participate in the class discussions and follow his rubrics, you'll do fine.
Ghent is a really good professor. I enjoy how flexible he is and how helpful he is. I have this class online but he has always been very helpful and accessible to me. When I Emil him with questions he normally gets back to me within the hour and is so polite. He is a great choice, I would take him again.
Great instructor. Funny, witty, somewhat irreverent, sometimes TMI. Great talker, you do not get bored in this class. Blunt and demanding (he expects you to work hard), but you will learn a lot.
Very funny, understanding, and creates an environment that is comfortable and fun.
He doesnt give constructive feedback on work and when he does its in a condescending tone. Honestly youd be better off taking this course with another professor.
Be prepared to have what ever you think is right to be said is wrong. He is awful, when asked to do peer review for another students paper he prefers grammar over the content of the paper. This is all the critical thinking professors they want you to think Independently but its only right if its what they think
Gives feedback in a very disrespectful way. You will not receive an A on any essay and lucky to get a B. You think you know exactly what he wants and then end up completely left field with condescending feedback almost like talking down to you. 10/10 would not recommend this dude. Look elsewhere.
Ghent is a tough grader, but because he is wanting us to learn and dig deeper. This class requires personal thought and critical thinking. We are in college to enhance our abilities and challenge ourselves, it is not meant to be an "easy A". He gives great feedback and is more than happy to answer any questions.
Ghent is a good professor and will give the same effort the student puts in and is really willing to help. He is a very tough grader but I genuinely feel like he has made me a better student. This is my second class with him, his comments are very upfront, but they actually do make you dig deeper into critical thinking and be able to problem-solve.
Ghent's class is honestly really chill. He grades a little hard for papers but if you ask for help or go to the writing center, I promise you will make a good grade. Make sure you do ALL YOUR REFLECTIONS!!! Biggest graded assignments are the reflections and PARTICIPATION IN CLASS! He gives hella *easy* extra credit so it will help with your grade!
Literally the most useless class I have ever had to take. The essays are graded off a terrible rubric and his discussions are nothing more than busy work. I have lost braincells from taking this class and advise everyone to stay away if you have any sense of self preservation. This class is awful and you will hate life.
I think my biggest issue is the amount of long and hard discussion posts you have to do then respond to 6 peers but he expects you to respond in a critical way that nobody has quite gotten down yet so most of the graded discussion posts result in a low grade even though you spend hours doing them. It is hard putting in so much work for a bad grade
Hes Funny and made this a really personal class which helped with my writing
Professor Ghent is a tough grader, but it is only to make his students better writers. Other than that, he comprises with his students. Taking this course has made an even better writer that before.
Just another English course that colleges make you take with opinionated grading. Ive taken many English courses but I dont think they help improve anything if youre just doing busy work and writing a few papers. Ghent seems nice but this class should not be required for non English majors
get ready to write useless papers that wont help you in the future. the class isnt terrible but pretty useless. you will have to write papers that are oddly specific with a vague rubric, they wont help you grow. for a critical thinking class you would think the prompts would be more fun to use your brain more to make connections
Of course nothing was given to us in this course. It didnt hurt to mostly have to do work one day a week besides essay weeks. Also, when I needed last minute help Professor Ghent was there to help in the best way he could!
I feel like there is no winning with this guy. You can do your best work and he still likes to give little condescending comments. I wish he would grade the essay rather than grading your essay based on whether or not he agrees with you. He never told me how I could improve my essay in his comments, do not take this teacher if you want to improve.
Hes very difficult
Didn't really enjoy his class. I thought 90% of the readings were boring and the essays weren't beneficial to my overall learning. Even when I followed the rubrics closely and tried to write my best papers, I still always got a lower grade than I wanted (I usually get A's on all my English papers). He's got a great personality, just a hard grader
CRTW is a pretty hard class in general, but Mr. Ghent does a great job teaching the material. The class is pretty reading heavy which should be expected, but if you have any questions about the material he does a good job getting back to you quickly and explains everything well. As long as you follow his rubrics, you'll do well in the class.
It is a class where I try my best and still fail at assignments. I usually get good grades in courses like this, but honestly, this class makes me feel stupid and like I can never achieve a decent grade.
The best teacher/ professor I have ever had. I'm a very lazy person who hates reading and writing but still passed because of how easy the work is. I literally do the bare minimum and still got through.
I had him years ago, and then again this past semester. I think he has really changed. He is not as hard a grader as he used to be. I think he has finally realized that college is a consumer good and that he is a customer service representative. He always wanted his students to be successful, but now he will bring you a side of fries with that.
Ghent is hilarious. I absolutely adore him. Fantastic man, willing to compromise and help students who need it and he is very understanding. If you have the option to take this class with him take it because he loves in-class discussions and discussing topics with him is super enjoyable. He loves joking around with his students. Fantastic class.
Bryan is a great professor. I didn't take it serious at first, but please do from the start. Participation in this class counts 25% and to do well in the course, you have to speak. Every class period is based on a different article (reading, highlight and underline text as apart of your daily grade). 3 essays and discussion posts are grades too.
As a non-native speaker, I struggled with public speaking, but his encouragement has greatly increased my confidence. He fosters a supportive environment that promotes growth and learning. Moreover, he offers detailed and constructive feedback on my essays, which has been crucial in enhancing my writing skills.
I love how we were able to direct the class ourselves with little restriction. However, he required everyone to speak, so I really got to hear a wide range of ideas! If I had 1 critique, it would be that he can get off on a tangent chatting too long when its his turn, but he usually catches on! Annotations expected, easy writing essays.
CRTW is one of those classes that everyone has to take, but Mr. Ghent makes it a great time. I am in STEM, but he makes me want to take more English classes. Highly recommend him for any student whether he be in your general ed requirements or major. He will be stern on your writing, so make sure to visit his office hours.
He made really uncomfortable remarks regarding women in bikinis, and often talked about his personal romantic relationships.
Ghent is an great instructor who encourages deep thinking about the course material. He's engaging and shares personal stories to connect more closely with students. While most of the assignments were fairly easy, he grades essays quite strictly, often deducting points for minor details not mentioned in the rubric. Overall, an excellent professor!
A great class overall. My only issue is Turnitin. My second essay was flagged as AI generated when I wrote it, which was such a bummer. He was super cool about letting me rewrite the essay though, which I appreciated to no end.
He was a great professor overall. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. My only complaint was Turnitin flagged one of my essays as AI generated, when I wrote the essay. The upside is he allowed me to rewrite my paper, which I appreciated to no end.
If you want an easy class, take Dr. Ghent. However, if you want to keep your sanity, do not. He would consistently make creepy comments towards the women in my class and would only pay attention to them. He is extremely unprofessional, and I am disgusted by the way he teaches and interacts with students who are just trying to go to class.
Ghent is a good professor as far as lectures go, which consist of a group discussion about the reading(s) from our textbook. The essays are where the grading gets tough. Good luck getting a perfect grade on any of the essays. His feedback is not helpful, and his expectations are simply too harsh for a required course.
