Greatest teacher I have ever had loved him he helped me love math. bYou will not be disappointed if you take his class
No Comments
great teacher, the best math teacher i have ever had, i wish he would teacher more clases though.
he was such a mellow and patient teacher, he never moved to quickly. he was my fav math teacher ive had i think.
He is very good teacher. His lecture is very clearly. He make me confident in Math126. Very nice teacher.
he made the class harder then it needed to be.
First day impression, he was AWESOME. Afterwards, I was just pumped to go to class, then the work came in and well, class was still cool. He's a cool and mellow and well, you should take one of his classes.
Precalc is supposed to be hard, but the first two weeks of his class were torture. If you can make it past that, you'll probably do ok... but MANY in my class weren't able to. Also, whoever rated him as hot has some... interesting... taste.
He is a fantastic teacher. He is clear in his lectures and is very nice to boot. He really cares about his students and is willing to help. One of my favorite classes and I will be taking his class again.

He was hard. He was hard to approach, he was a hard grader. I would not take him again, nor would I recommend him.
I love taking Math from Mr. Johns. I took his 081 class and am now in his 085 class. He is a great teacher. He is super nice. He's great at explaining how to do math. His teaching style is clear and easy to follow and understand. His classes are well structured. I enjoy attending them. I like his grading policy too. I highly reccommend him.
Great teacher... Loved having Mr. Johns as a teacher and wish he was teaching the following class. Would definitely take another class from him.
Mr Johns was an excellent teacher. He explained things each day very clearly, and he was always open to questions. He made sure that everyone understood how to do things, and your homework always followed what he taught that day in class. I would absolutely take him again if he was teaching the next math class that i needed. GREAT TEACHER!
He's the nicest teacher ever, he likes to go off and explain all the different ways to do things, but he is super sweet. He's like Mr. Rogers. His teaching style is great if you don't like to be put on the spot and he's a very encouraging teacher. I think I've learned a lot, and I'm taking him again next quarter.
Mr. Johns is a superb teacher. Very obviously loves his work. He is very concise, consistent and organized. Reminds me mildly of Steve Carell in 40 Year Old Virgin. I would recommend him in a heartbeat.
I would definitely recommend him!! He's super nice!
Great teacher, makes complicated theories easy to understand. Very easy going and gives plenty of time to complete work.
AWESOME
i was a 4.0 student all the way through out the quater. i was late for my take home finals and turned it in late and he gave me a ZERO. in his email he said he makes no exceptions. but i see him giving other girl students that he likes exceptions.
Mr. Johns changed my relationship with math completely. He was gracious enough to let me into his class even though I didn't make the prerequisite grade, and I walked away with a 3.7. He's amazing! Clear, focused, reasonable, friendly. Used both wamap and textbook/paper for homework. Tests were all take-home. I love this guy!

Does not explain his subject well at all. doesn't care if his students aren't doing well in his class. he teaches way too fast and gives way too much homework. he doesn't give anytime to study for a test.
the instructor removes points for people who leave early. i had to leave early because what he was making us do was just embarrassing. he gives us homework without explaining it first. he explains it after we had already done the homework and alredy got a bad grade. he teaches things that aren't in the math book, which is really unfair.
the instructor removes points for people who leave early. i had to leave early because what he was making us do was just embarrassing.
he is so fake because he is always smiling, but if you ask him a question about math he doesn't answer.
terrible teacher! he has no understanding for people who struggle at math. his fake smile is annoying and he grades unfairly
Quite possibly the most generic instructor at SCCC. He is neither great nor terrible. You will neither hate nor love math after you are done. Pos: He will take the time for you to understand a concept and is friendly if you approach him out of class. Neg: Takes a while to get stuff back. Monotone. Oh, and follow all his prickly rules.
He is a great teacher, he wants to make sure ppl all know what to do. He is the only teacher that was able to teach me how to do math. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't of done as well. I can't wait to take him for pre-cal. He has a lot of work, but the point is to learn. If it's embarressing why are you even in that math class? test the hell out.
This guy is a Dick. When I would ask questions he would respond with a simpering "well, thats a little too hard for this class". He brushes off any answers that are not the exact idea he was looking for. Condescending. Grades students he dosn't like lower then those he does. Again: GIANT DICK.
Mr. Johns is a great teacher. You just have to be willing to do the work. There is a lot of homework but if you're not trying to do work then why are you in college. He wants you to grasp the concept not just do what the book says, that is why he teaches things that aren't in the book. Go to class every day, pay attention, and do your homework.
He is one of the best math teachers I've had so far. He explains things very well. The tests can be hard if you don't study the material well, but the tests are generally the same stuff that he taught and what is in the book. He assigned a lot of online homework. Some people might not like that but i think it is vital to really know the math.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Mr johns is a nice guy and but not the best teacher. He is all about that wamap garbage and doesn't use the class time instructing. We just go over the homework, and if you don't know the work well enough to do the homework then he tells you " go to tutoring". Just avoid this class altogether.
Not the best math teacher I've ever had, but definitely not the worst. This was the first class I had to use WAMAP which took getting used to. There's a lot of work and his tests and quizzes always seemed to do me in, but he gives enough outside work to make up for that if you're just a bad test-taker like I am. I recommend taking Swisshelm.
He is clearly enthusiastic about the subject of math and it makes his classes engaging and fun to be in. Very clear about expectations and happy to answer homework questions in class and office hours. I think he's one of the best math teachers I've had in awhile.
Best teacher I have ever had. Lots of homework to be had but I definatly learned more than I thought and was well prepared for the next level. He explains things thoroughly and uses the class time wisely. I would definatly recommend.
Great teacher, goes over problems when asked. He explained the problems better then any other math teacher ive had. I use to hate math until i took his class. Its not easy at all theres A LOT of work, but if you ask when confused and do all assignments youll get a lot more knowledge in math. He drops 3 online hw 3 reading ass and 1 test.
he was ok. But her was not the best teacher. For example he would get half way through explaining somthing and then move on to a new topic. Leaving me and many other students slightly confused.
Johns is super nice. He's really supportive of inept math students like me, and his teaching style is totally adequate. He gives extra help if you ask for it outside of class time. If he doesn't answer your questions in class, it's probably because they are irrellevent & he doesn't want to confuse everyone else. ... but WAMAP is awful.
A nice guy, but we didn't touch the textbook except for reading assignments until halfway through the class. Doesn't explain new concepts, expecting the student to do all of the work. Brushes off most in class questions for time, but keeps decent office hours. Ridiculous amount of homework.
He is a great instructor without a doubt! Mr. Johns is very knowledgable, inspiring, and respectful. He's a bit strict but you'll learn a lot in his class.
Mr. Johns does not like answering questions that he believes wastes time because class moves very quickly. He does give you opportunities to ask outside of class, though. He's a really busy person so it was kind of hard to ask him questions. He's a great teacher and may seem intimidating but he's does his job well. A lot of internet homework
I used to hate math, but that has changed! I was very intimidated by Mr. Johns at first but he is great at teaching mathematics. If you do your work and go to class everyday you will be successful. He is very enthusiastic about math and that helps learning be fun! I really enjoyed his class! crazy!
He is obviously extremely intelligent concerning the subject matter, but I regret signing up to take his class. He moved at the speed of light though most of the material, and I think his expectactions for his students are a bit contrived and unrealistic at times.
Best Math Professor! Do not be mistaken, you will do math. If you want to learn and are willing to do the work, you will do great in his class. I got a 4.0 in trig class looking like i will get a 4. in his 151 class. There is a lot of hw but if you work hard on it you will do good. If you go the extra mile for him he will go the extra mile for you.
Best math professor I've ever had, hands down. He doesn't follow the book to a T because he doesn't need to. He's passionate about math and it shows. He develops his own curriculum plan, and it works incredibly well. Take his class!
Mr. Johns is easily the best math professor I've ever had. He expects a lot from his students, so you will have a good deal of homework, but that just insures you have a great understanding of the material. He is always available to answer questions and explains complicated ideas incredibly well. I'll recommend him to everyone.
Mr Johns is a very good teacher. He follows the textbook closely but uses a lot of his own material. He gives a lot of homework and assignments. Grading is a little inconsistent and not very helpful.
Johns is a very clear, and helpful teacher. His lessons are informative and he explains things very well. He always answers homework questions, and doesn't make you feel bad about asking silly questions. He assigns tons of homework and several mathematica projects. His grading was slow and feedback was nonexistent.
Professor Johns is one of the best math teachers I've ever had! He firmly believes that the student is in charge of their learning which can make the course challenging for less-independent students. He can move a little fast on lectures but if you go see him in office hours, he's very helpful. Tests are straightforward and grading fair.
He is the best math professor you could ever imagine. He is always there to help you with math problems. But you have to work for the grade in order to pass the class. His lectures are pretty clear and easily understandable. He has plenty of homework which are really helpful. He gives a lot of extra credits.
This is one of my best professors I have taken. He gives timely and good feedback. If you are intending to do the calculus series, I would recommend you take all the classes with him.
Johns is not a good teacher. He looks like friendly, but he is very strict. A lot of homework everyday and have difficult subjects. Tests and exam are in many things and too difficult. Even if you finish all of the homework, you will find it is not really helpful in tests and final exam.
Really hard grader, takes a long time to give back tests. No quizzes and only 2 tests before the final so most of your grade relies on the tests. I had to retake the class because I didn't get a good enough grade. Would never take again.
Don't take his class at all. A lot of homework. by the time you finish with homework, there is no time to study. ugh, the reading assignment was so hard. fake smile and tough grader.
John requires you to work hard and completely pay attention to everything that you study in class. Reading assignments and doing homework are truly important because they helps you to enhance your knowledge and know what things you have to study deeply. Exams and quizzes are fine. Remember to preview everything carefully, you will be good.
Be careful when you take his class. He goes really fast. He gives reading assignments everyday and THOSE ARE THE WORSE.
Mr Johns requires you to read material in the textbook beforehand, which is crucial for the class. He explains the stuff quite well but only to those who had done homework and reading. Note that he will not be spoon-feeding you. You have to bear a sense of self-teaching. However, he is very accessible outside class should you need help.
Very very tough grader!!!!!!!
Gives a lot of Mathematica assignments which are graded. If you are not trained on Mathematica do not take his class. He gives reading assignments which are graded for every chapter and they usually have nothing to do with textbook. Textbook is poorly written which makes those assignments even harder. Wont take him ever again.
Great teacher, really understands math and is very passionate about sharing his knowledge. Tests are not impossible.
You may as well study Trig online and try to test out of it. If you take Johns you'll be teaching yourself anyway. Lectures are garbage, textbook is garbage. Thank god for the internet
Not a great professor. I almost always felt like his lectures were a complete waste of time. Assigns a ton of homework which is all even numbered problems, grades it extremely thoroughly and doesn't really seem to understand how people could have lives outside of class. Had to complain to get him to stop giving out assignments with 24h deadlines.
I would say tests are quite hard, like you legit have to know the material well to know what's going on, but it's not impossible. Mathematica requires the knowledge from lecture to do. Just open his Mathematica files, copy and change the codes (it's not impossible). Reading assignments are really tough. Overall, not too bad as ratemyprofessor says.
I took 151 with him and he prepared me well and helped me build a good foundation for all of the classes after it. Even though, the class is what I consider the hardest math class for me, even harder than vector cal, I am so thankful to take 151 with him. I went to almost all his office hours and that helped tremendously in succeeding in his class.
Reading 10%, get 2-3 dropped. HW 20% get 2 dropped. 4 Projects count 10%. 2 tests 30% and a final exam also 30%. You are given handouts so you don't have to take notes. Exams are not hard but if you want to get 95% + you have to understand the materials crystal clear. Lectures are amazing so I recommend you come to class every day. EC are available
Mr. Johns is amazing teacher. He truly cares and his passion for math is inspiring. With that said, it was also one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, and his tests are 2x harder than any instructor I've ever had. I showed up every day and put in maximum effort and still got a C. If you are up for a challenge it can be rewarding still.
Mr. Johns is the best teacher I have ever had!! He is so nice and really takes the time to engage with the students and makes sure to go over everything just in case someone doesn't understand. He is a little picky with grading and no late work accepted at all so you need to stay on top of the material. Other than that his lectures are great!
Be ready to go to sleep super late because you have so much homework. The test is not base on the homework you've been doing along the course. I am a student who usually does the best is possible to get a good grade. He gave me the lowest grade I ever had and let's be honest for the amount of work you have to do, your effort is not recognized.
Honestly one of the best teachers Ive ever had! Very kind and helpful.
220 with Johns was a memorable experience. We worked through the textbook meticulously, proving almost every theorem for homework. I never expected a community college course to have MORE mathematical rigor than the equivalent UW course. Lectures were fascinating and engaging. Grading was thorough and fair. Take this guy's class whenever possible!
He is a helpful teacher when you ask for help. But he doesn't seem to get that people have lives, work ect. Doesn't use canvas. He emails and will pester you to do work, and hurry and finish, very frustrating . Posts assignments with less than 24 hours to complete.
If you communicate, the wisdom Mr. J gives goes a long way. He's awesome because you are welcome to just sit in his zoom room while you work in case you have concerns about work through ALEKS. However, ALEKS (The AI program you're using got class is phenomenal. Mr. J is just a plus in case ALEKS guidance is too "automated".
Graded out if 122 points. 72 on test rest on homework. 92% and up for 4.0 but lower than that drops you to 3.7. Strict grader.
Took this classes. One of my fav professor. Love him a lot.
Great lecture. Clear curriculums.
This man has it. He wants you to learn and makes you want to learn. He goes through each topic with the same vigor and eagerness to teach. I highly recommend taking his stats 220 class and any other class he teaches. He simply cares and wants you to succeed. A rare characteristic a lot of professors do not have. Get ready to do some work though!
Professor Johns is easily the best teacher I have ever had the privilege of learning from. You will learn so much and you won't fail if you show up. The material you will be learning in Statistics is difficult, regardless of what class or teacher you take. However, Professor Johns is clearly passionate about teaching it and it shows. you will learn
The work was not too difficult but the amount of assignments is just way too much. The first couple of weeks I would check the calendar twice a week for assignments and was always surprised to see another 10 assignments past due that I hadn't seen when I checked before. You need a 360 webcam and to show a form of identification to take exams
Prof. Johns is an exceptional teacher. He is very thorough about explaining how his class will be run. His course was engaging, challenging and interesting. What stood out to me the most was how interactive his class was despite it being online. There is a lot of work to do but he grades fairly. Hands down, the best online course I've taken.
Incredible instructor. I've taken an intermediate algerbra class with Professor Johns before and was excited to take Math 141. Very helpful and responsive during office hours.
10/10 would take a class with this Professor again. The biggest takeaways from this class, was that you need to put in the individual work. It is an online class so you must complete the homework according before the due dates. There are student hours, so take advantage of them. He gives great feedback and really wants his students to succeed!
The hardest professor I've ever had in my life! If you don't do it the EXACT way he wants it, he will give you 0 points and isn't understanding whatsoever. I had to always go and see how he graded his work to correct him if he ever docked me more points than I deserved. If you can take another professor.
Awful!
So tough on grading, even a small mistake. Toooo much homework and reading assignment, which will drive you crazy. His lecture does not help at all. Good feedback, quick response, care about his students.
Tough grader and ready to do lots of homework every day. No matter how much effort you put into the assignment, you can barely get a 100 on homework. So you better do well on the test and final if you want a good grade.
Avoid this teacher! he would make you record yourself when your taking exams. is this covid time? he also wants you to go by his way of teacher and if you don't go how the way he teaches he would give you a 0. I would not take this teacher again!
Wants exams to be recorded/proctored. Lots of reading. Material was easy for someone who did great in Calc, most of the work should be very straightforward but Johns overcomplicates it by wanting the work to be done in a specific way, which he does not give an example of. Lost so many points cus of that even though the answer was ✔️. Avoid🤬🤬🤬!!!
As a person who was worried I wasn't going to pass this course, this instructor made it the opposite outcome. One week on each daily short reading sections, quizzes & hw. Be consistent on notes and the videos/datalabs. Required to record your screen only during exams, but you can be in any area that you choose; doesn't have to be in your house!
If I had the knowledge I have now about this class, I would not have taken it. It affected my schedule for other classes, and I considered dropping it the first week but decided to stick with it. I have never been that stressed and drained. The material is easy; I just wish the workload were reasonable.
No respect to students. The worst. Very old perspective and just being hard .never give student motivation.
I had him for stats, he's a little strict with how you show your work and the workload is overwhelming, but I think all math classes at central are the same. Overall a very nice professor outside of that.
