Got him this semester for 2301. Good prof overall, but he is a bit all over the place. We got a lot of work to do as a group. Overall liked his class and enjoyed the project. It was a though class that required a lot of work. The exams aren't bad, but it is necessary to read the book if you want a decent grade.
Funny and easy going teacher but a very tough marker on assignments also very hard tests you have to study hard and know you're things. Would take another course of his though
I really just can't focus on his lectures during classes. And, his voice is obviously small sometimes. (like mummbling) He is quite a good guy, but I personally don't appreciate his way of teaching. Besides, why he mentioned that he hates cats all the time?
He's a very hard marker, but when you ask for help he will go in depth with what you need.
Really arrogant and not a great teacher!
He is an excellent instructor
Dr Jones is a great teacher. He is funny, and tries to get people excited about Psychology through humour. Listen to his lectures, and ask lots of questions. He loves Star Wars, and has a distastes for felines. Enjoy!
class work is easy - you have 2 exams ( midterm and final) and one project only thing is if you mess up your mark will be a c or lower- if you do take his course make sure to follow instruction to a "T" - he is hard marker though lectures are funny- he tells jokes from back in the day when ppl had dial up CPU and walkie talkies -
i found bryan okay not too bad. his notes was easy to understand and his lectures were alright. pretty much for this course just make sure to read the textbook and study his notes and you should be able to do fine on his exams. i found this course not too difficult if ur willing to put effort into trying. :)
Bryan is a tough grader. However for the midterm and final, he gives his class a verbal outline. EVERYTHING on his final and midterm are also within the lecture slides... so study those. Overall super funny guy. He may have some controversial personal beliefs and be a tough grader, but he makes class interesting.
Passionate about his field, makes things easy to grasp and remember through use of humor. Engages students with discussion, and easy to talk to about any concerns etc. He is fair, and will make you work for your mark, but you'll leave being happy that he pushed you.
Easy going fellow. Quite funny. Enjoyable lectures. Always cracking jokes. He's a neuroscientist so his lectures are always very brain centered. Can be a bit of a tough grader, but it's usually fair.
Bryan was so awesome! I actually wanted to go to classes because he's an entertaining guy. Not an easy A, you'll have to read the textbook but his slides show you what you should focus on. Explains fully what will be on exams, because he wants you to do well. Very easy and nice to talk to outside of class plus he's extremely easy on the eyes.
I don't rate profs but I felt compelled to in this case! This class was hard, but rewarding. I'm 4th year psych BA needing an elective & heard his class was good; not only was I pleasantly surprised but challenged (did pre req 8 yr ago). Dr. J makes this content matter to you and will make you want get involved! And he's very easy to look at ;)
Bryan is such an awesome professor. I always looked forward to his lectures. He's really funny and knows how to teach. The midterm and final are not difficult if you study the material. The final is not cumulative which is awesome. The psych labs are really interesting and are mandatory. As long as you study you will pass the class.
Good prof, assignments are easy marks but the final exam is a little challenging.
He is unorganized, scattered. His powerpoint slides were not concise. He doesn't give clear instructions or tell how assignments will be marked. I was looking forward to the course and liked to read the text book. I never skip classes, but felt like doing so every week. Does not foster conversation in class. Focus is on entertaining talk show.
Overall lack of clear direction and expectations. Lectures and class notes are a bit minimalistic and somewhat disorganized. Tests are not easy as some questions focus on unexpected topics or details and some are over complicated. Can do well in this course by studying the text book and doing some additional research.
worst ever
Cool guy and will answer all questions, especially about microbiology. He seems to really know his stuff. He has a multiple choice quiz due before each lecture and only one paper to write. make sure you study for the midterm, can be brutal if you don't
Quite tardy and not so good with time management. However criteria is clear and both the midterm and final exam were extremely easy (started studying night before). The term paper was even easier I basically received a perfect mark. (also started night before). Start ahead of time and an A should be extremely easy. I regret procrastinating :(

Only complaints are: He does not answer back to e-mails, and he does not upload assignments to blackboard when he says hes going too. Assignments were always needed to be due the following class and it took him days to actually upload the assignment, some students just want to start working on it before the weekend comes...
This course is a ton of work. Bryan's lectures are clear, he makes the dry content relatively fun and he has interesting anecdotes from his experience in research. His slides are on blackboard. Make sure you reach out to him constantly for help with your experiment, he won't suggest things you don't ask for.
Okay so I am a Criminology student I was always interested in Psychology in general but I had no idea it was required for me to take going into my program. With that being said, this course is not easy by any means. The Professor, Bryan makes the class so much more enjoyable! He is truly passionate about what he does but I wish I could do better :(
I really liked him, super hilarious and always used real life examples! His class always went by super quickly as he is a really funny person. Make sure to keep up on launchpad because sometimes I wouldn't know which weeks we would have them he doesn't remind you so just keep checking! They're due the day before class.
He's a down to earth, and relaxed prof. Does not make you feel inferior. Some assignments are really simple but vague at the same time. First exam was really hard, and no one did well so he has to curve it. Slides are somewhat helpful but need to read the textbook for more details cause he does not put in everything. Teaches you what's important.
Funny prof. Knowledgable, makes content easier to remember. Assignment are simple but vague at the same time. Last class day, he changed material of final exam 360. Studied on what he said, but on final exam, he changed it a bit again and instead of 3 hours, were given 1 hour & 30 minutes. Exam wasn't difficult, if you studied, but threw us off.
Super chill prof, who really made the course enjoyable. He is knowledgeable in the field and knows his stuff. We had 2 midterm, 2 assignments, 1 group project and a final. The midterms are tricky so study ahead of time. Beware that you need to know your project inside out because he will grill you with questions at the end, in front of the class :
Dr. Jones always seemed to be joking more than actually teaching. Any study guides materials he gave us were never actually on the tests, and he never gave any feedback on tests and papers. He seemed like he didn't like his job very much.
He lacks communication with the class, rarely gives feedback on tests and papers, and he is always late on replying emails. Even when he let us know important notice about the exam, he sends us the email on the day of exam not before. He never inform anything in advance even if it's an important thing about the exams. He seems not like his job.
Very funny and entertaining, was my first college course and it was a blast having him. Easygoing, down-to-earth, and personable.
I had no idea what was going on in this class.. You have to use the textbook for test prep and the assignments were unclear, so make sure to ask if you're confused. There is a group project, that was also difficult and Bryan asks your group questions once your done so be prepared for that. He was a really funny prof though
Bryan's a nice guy, he's friendly and funny. However, I'm less interested in jokes and anecdotes when I am trying to understand neuropsychology. Not very structured and the class was kind of a mess. I wouldn't recommend him neither do I recommend the class which is super difficult if you are not interested in biology / neuroscience. Not much psych
Bryan is a good prof, he is straight forward and tries to make lecture as interesting as he can. He doesnt give much homework, and tests arent very hard. He also gives written test questions a head of time so that you can be prepared. He also answers all questions
Absolutely terrible. Avoid at all costs. Lecture instruction is useless. Memorize the textbook. Prof replied to some emails, some not at all. Very disappointed.
Had the privilege of taking a class by Dr. Jones. He is very clear when it comes to telling you what he will and will not accept in his assignments. When it came to the research paper assignment he gave very good feedback when you took the time to reach out to him. Would definitely take another class from him. Very laid back but also a good prof.
Bryan's Class was the best!! He made all lectures super funny and interesting. We only did one SUPER EASY APA assignment, it was basically handed to you (and mind you I hate essays), midterm and final. He might come off as intimidating but he's so relateable and caring. I only showed up to class, barely studied, passed w flying colors! just listen
Entertaining instructor. Slow answering emails, very slow. Attending lectures a must as he explains details that text doesn't. Good speaker. Hard marker.
Nice guy but disorganized, boring lectures he reads from slides, difficult exams, doesn't explain concepts well, late at replying to emails, have to read text book to pass. Wouldn't recommend.
Fantastic professor makes the class enjoyable. You will work hard in his class but its totally worth it. Brilliant professor would absolutely recommend.
Lectures are engaging and you can read the slides before class. Very student-success-focused setup: papers and assignments are split up into parts, there are labs and weekly freebie Launchpad quizzes, and extra credit, so you can really beef up your grade. He was very helpful during office hours. Also, reading the textbook is essential to do well.
Dr. Jones was generally a nice guy, but his lectures were dry and boring, he read paragraphs from his slides and was inaccessible outside of class time. I sent him several emails and he rarely ever responded unless I sent another, and did not give any support when I was struggling. Tests are hard and make up 60% of the grade. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
He gives really good lectures and is engaging, but is so disorganized and unclear. For one test he said not to worry about something, and then it ended up being the main question, unsurprisingly, the highest mark on that test was 90% and he was constantly shocked at how poorly the class was doing but blamed covid instead of his own teaching.
Doesn't respond to emails. He is not compassionate or caring, big ego. If you have a disability don't take his class. His slides are old and I caught him giving us wrong information twice. Does not engage in classroom discussion. Should extend class to two hour classes twice per week. He is not available to speak to after class. Avoid.
Great teacher! It's a hard class in general so when he brings in his humor here and there it makes the lectures less boring. He made is very easy to follow and tried to explain in a way we all understood. I would definitely take him again.
Legit one of the best professors I have ever had. His teaching style was engaging and almost all the test material was mentioned in lectures. His grading is fair and he is lenient on extensions if you put in consistent effort. Just do the assignments and engage in the lectures, and you'll do fine.
Bryan was okay. I'm not going to say that he was fantastic. I find he's a tough grader, especially for fine detail. Make sure you know how to write APA style papers for his class. If I had to take him again and there were no other options, I'd take him... but he's not the first choice at all.
He is extreme and miserable. I would never take a course with him again. Just from reading the syllabus you can tell what kind of a person he is. Just be warned..if you can take the course with a different prof, do so... any one is better than him. It's one thing if he was difficult grader but approachable and helpful.. but he is neither.
Lots of reading and teaching yourself through YouTube crash-course-vids. Professor claims he doesn't trick on exams'. However exams are difficult, no study guide, during lectures he skips over PowerPoint slides, says to "not worry about it", but ends up putting skipped material in exams anyways. Most failed at least 1 midterm (there's 2 + final)
If you want to get a good grade in this class, be prepared to work hard. Going to all his lectures is vital because he gives hints about what will be on the tests. Take notes while he's talking and do all the assigned readings. Bryan is very funny and actually makes you think critically, which makes the material more interesting.
Dr Jones is a funny guy and his lectures in critical are very intriguing, but unless you don't care about your gpa dropping don't take him with this course. Exams were very confusing and the concepts can be very complex and he often does not give clear answers. Gives the impression of being lazy and arrogant, but he's sarcastic and funny too
exams are ridiculously difficult, doesn't help that there is no study guide:(( unapproachable always seems like he is in a hurry to end the class and rushes the lecture:/ skips a lot of his slides:/ doesn't use up the entire three hours of class:/ funny sometimes but at times just inappropriate I do not recommend taking this course with this prof
as a person he is super cool and i enjoyed his over all "vibe" if you will. as a professor he is very specific which is hard to come by in a critical issues class as there is never "one right answer" however he IS looking for one right answer and if you dont commute exactly his thinking behind the issue you will not get full marks, if any.
Great professor but a very poor administrator. Want to do well? Reiterate his opinions and don't be fancy - you'll be penalized for that. He's a hilarious guy and will make the lectures entertaining but be prepared to deal with his chaotic antics. 30 min presentation (20%), 3 exams (20% each), and 2 thought papers (10% each). Overall, manageable.
3309 is not as bad as everyone says it is tbh. Bryan is funny, the material is intriguing, it is a LOT of work and you have to be willing to put in a lot of time and effort and show up for every class... but I did not HATE the course and didn't receive a bad grade. I recommend taking this at the end of your degree as most of it is a review.
The worst class I have taken at Douglas yet. So much -unnecessary- work. Tests are multiple choice with written sections and are very hard. Multiple choice is mainly from the textbook and get ready to read 2-3 chapters per week. Written answers are from the lectures and you need to write what he says and believes is right. The final is cumulative.
I took his Psych 1100 course when it was his first time teaching online asynchronous. His lectures were good, but there was no posting schedule, so I never knew how many videos I would have to watch or when they would be available. It did get more consistent over the semester, so I assume his future online classes will be better.
One of the most frustrating classes ever. He constantly cancels class only giving students 30 minutes of notice about the cancellation. Constantly makes derogatory jokes toward women and minorities. Constantly calls his students incompetent or not smart enough for the current material. If you're not a white man, you will 100% be offended by him.
Bryan is funny but there is so much material with so little guidance. He is usually a bit or quite late to class, skips over slides, assigns very lengthy chapters each week with quizzes, does not provide study guides for his exams, and never answers emails. There is also a big paper you have all semester to do. Would not recommend this prof.
This Professor made alot of sex jokes during the class, this made many students very uncomfortable as well as myself. He would talk about drugs like they're candy which should not be promoted in a introduction course containing many students under the age of 25. He is also the worst at responding to emails which is not very professional.
Avoid this prof if u care about your gpa in the slightest.
Bryan is very unprofessional, his tests were very hard, and subjective (you have to parrot his opinions word by word). Take this course during your last semester so your grade does not show up for your grad school application.
Doesn't show up to classes or is always a bit late, always in a rush to end, skips through slides, disorganized lectures and makes inappropriate sex and drug jokes which makes me uncomfortable.. avoid if you can
Do not take this course with him. Not available for any help. Degrades you and make it seem like you are not smart enough for all of your courses.
Innapropriate behaviour, doesn't put an effort into teaching. Has no clear expectations for his students and no rubrics, if you don't parrot his opinions you won't do well. Tries to be funny and it works when the jokes aren't creepy/gross but that isn't often, I'm afraid.
His exams are absolutely brutal. The questions are worded ambiguously, content dense, and he provides zero guidance on what to study to prepare. He doesn't answer emails, dresses inappropriately, and makes comments that sexually objectify women in his lectures. He talks about drugs like he's advertising them. Avoid at all costs.
Marking tough, disrespectful jokes, no tolerance on any late assignment even with excuses. If you wanna feel what pain is, take his class.
Do not take this course with him. Not available for any help. Degrades you, sometimes test questions are not relevant to content has learnt. No patience with answering questions.
Doesn't respond to emails. Big ego. If you have a disability don't take his class, he does not care and still mark harsh. Does not engage in classroom discussion. Not available to speak to after class, avoid if you can.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
He has no clear expectations for his students and no rubrics for most of the things, missing deadline himself and expect students to make every assignment perfect, no excuses even if you turn in assignment one sec late, but get an "override" himself. If you don't parrot his opinions you won't do well. Creepy and sexual jokes are high-frequent.
Confusing and sometimes does not accept excused absences.
He talks a lot sexual jokes and he never respond to emails
Hard to talk to and his lectures often contain off-color jokes. Someone needs to get the higher-ups involved for him refusing excused absences.
Bryan makes inappropriate jokes throughout the semester that he believes are "funny." Every lecture is extremely heavy, and he doesn't give specific help when exams come around on what to pay attention to. He makes you write 3 papers throughout the semester, which don't really teach you anything. I would stay away if I were you! :)
If you have opportunity, don't take his classes, if i would know about him, i would definitely not take this class with him
Actually...feeling like the rating of 1/5 are people not taking this class. Bryan replies to emails, it's just he takes time to process. He gives reasonable syllabus and grade in every assignments and exams. I don't think he is a mean guy, but rather we always call him Santa Claus as he always wear the red comfy jacket... Try taking his class!
I wouldn't recommend this prof. He missed classes without providing any explanation. When he did show up, his attempts to explain the material often felt unclear and unorganized. He made inappropriate jokes about sex and drugs, which made me feel uncomfortable in the class.
Doesn't seem to want to be there, and takes pleasure in showing off how smart he is. As a result, will ask unreasonably granular questions on tests.
Makes many off colour jokes. Not available to talk to after class. Takes LONG to answer emails. Has low expectations of himself, his clothing. Seems to be full of himself on an attitude level. Avoid him if you can.
Class average on the first exam was 52%. Keep that in mind. That was the average...can't believe this is the only professor available for this course and its a mandatory course.
Honestly, I don't understand how this professor is even allowed to teach. He rarely shows up to class, and when he does, there's no any actual teaching. Then, out of nowhere, the exams are insanely hard, and he expects us to know every little detail that was never even covered. If you value your GPA, effort and time - don't take his class.
Dr. Jones is far more interested in being a comedian than a professor. He uses the class as an audience, making inappropriate jokes. He is condescending and will lose his temper when he doesnt know the a nswer to something. He is needlessly transphobic. His lectures are dry, lack any teaching. Exams are nothing he taught you and extremely difficult
you can take him if you want to get no knowledge and low gpa
no study guide, doesnt teach. no feedback AT ALL for exams/writtens, just gives the grade and doesnt tell u what u did wrong. he makes a hard subject even harder. weird jokes, thinks they're funny and they're not.. overall i wish i never took this class and could go back in time and drop it.
take this class if u want ur gpa to drop and to learn absolutely nothing. did well on the first written, then failed the second. they both had the same quality and writing but didnt even let me know what i did wrong, just failed me and left no feedback. doesn't teach whatsoever and makes people uncomfortable
crazy how I'm diagnosed with NPD and this man is still more narcissistic than me
He is an extremely tough grader and creates very difficult exams. He decides partway through the semester what assignment he wants students to complete. There are no assignment due dates listed on the syllabus, and they are not posted on Blackboard, so if you miss a class, you risk missing important deadlines entirely. Just a horrible prof.
If I could give this a 0/5 I would
I understand peoples frustration with this prof but I think if you apply yourself, and don't mind a challenge then you should do fine. I enjoy the jokes in his lectures, and he is extremely knowledgeable in the material that he teaches which makes class conversations interesting.
I would avoid his classes at all costs. Big ego, doesn't even show up or is late, can't teach well, and is rude to students. I don't get how this guy is allowed to keep teaching. The other psych profs I've had at douglas are great, so just sign up for anybody else but him.
because of him I'll have to retake the course
Really hard tests and last minute papers. Given a week to write 2000 words.
I don't think Bryan Jones deserves this hate. I've had him for two semesters and he's always responsive to my emails. He is on a board for social services in greater Van, so I have trouble believing he is as apathetic as he's being made out to be. Is he challenging? Yes. But it's not gonna get easier in Uni
You can really tell he's passionate about the content he teaches. He doesn't deserve all the hate, you just have to show up to lecture (not mandatory, but helpful), be engaged and he's relatively quick to respond to emails. He makes lectures engaging and has a sense of humour.
The exams are too heavy and the lectures do not prepare students to succeed. This class dropped my gpa unfortunately :(
Wasn't too much homework and lectures were fun and he keeps it interesting. He veers off topic a little too often though.
Absolutely disgusted this is the only prof who teaches this course. Never have I ever failed a course in my entire life but there was nothing my peers and I could do to appease him. Extremely unfriendly and ridiculous marker. No proper outline for absolutely anything and is the hardest marker I have ever encountered. AVOID at literally all costs.
Anyone in here saying he's not bad is setting you up for failure. Avoid at all costs. He's absolutely awful and the worst prof at the college. Nothing is good enough for him yet he does a poor job of properly teaching so that you know the material. Contrary to other people's words, he does NOT answer emails quick. Even ones that are important.
Not a lot of class work. Short learning quizzes that directly refer to the textbook, one writing assignment (split in two parts and he gives the topic and resources), and a few labs marked on completion. He tells us what's on the midterm/final and gives out bonus points. His lectures can be boring though and he goes on tangents almost every slide
Definitely a tough grader, takes off so many marks for short answers and assignments.
