Man, I thought that I would never get through this course back in the day. I don't know if Bryan is still teaching or not, he was a decent prof. I felt for him when he had to teach this course because this course seriously blew goats.
A really nice, funny easygoing guy. His lectures pretty much suck, just speaks in a monotonous voice and clicks through powerpoint slides, but as a person he seems really nice and cracks some good jokes now and then
He seems like he would be an interesting guy outside of class but his lectures are really boring. Too many stats and charts for my liking. The class is pretty easy though as long as you do your readings.
Bryan is a wicked prof. He really knows his material and makes lectures interesting by cracking jokes. If you like his humour, you'll enjoy his class. Exams are really fair and you'll have no problem getting an A if you do the readings and study a bit. Go Bryan
wow has no control over the class...lecture is kinda a waste of time, however brian is a nice guy
It seemed like a really fun class. He would crack a few good jokes every lecture but the class is a bore and is empty at the end of the semester. He only reiterates what is on the notes. Go home and print it out. Midterm is relatively easy~ Good intro to crim tho~
A great guy but the material he had to teach was boring. Always good for a laugh, he has a great sense of humour!!
Easy credit, although boring lectures. Has difficulty controlling a lecture full of first year gremlins who are poking each other and chattin' it up. Still, he's a good guy with a great sense of humour. Upper division classes probably a lot better.
The class has some interesting perks, but they are usually found in the book. The prof. seems nice, and has a good sense of humor, but 2 hours of stats and graphs is just too much for me. All of his notes are from powerpoint presentations which can just be printed off at home.
Holy smokes! He actually got a positive rating??? Well I found him to be a snoze feast. Yeah, a couple of good jokes but not enough to keep me awake longer than the 20 mins. 2 hrs is just to brutal. I didn't learn a thing. read the book and you will do fine, just memorize the names.
Lecture was like, listening to a buddhist chanting. Way too boring + useless and I hate it especially when the lecture is 2 hours. Just read the textbook, skip all lectures. zzZZZZZzzZ
What is this guy doing here? Such a useless professor. Thinks that crime can be understood using statistics. Painful.
Very interesting when teaching an interesting class, Crim 101 and stats are not interesting material. Wait for upper division classes, before you rate a prof, when they get to teach what they like, the class is much better!
i was going to drop this class but bryan made the material somewhat interesting so i kept it. i'm so glad i did cuz it's not difficult if you read the info. bryan knows the stuff well & he's a pretty lenient marker. also, he made jokes to keep students' attn in the seminar.
Bryan is a good prof... he's funny as well... around every 3-4 minutes, he'll make a joke that makes the entire class laugh.
he had way too many slides and as long as you didnt really evan need to read one of the books so long as you went to tutorials and know how to do a multiple choice test your set i agree that yes he is nice and friendly but slides and stats are not my favorite thing i must say
Narcoleptics and those not addicted to caffeine will fall asleep before he makes his fairly humourous jokes in class to wake everyone up periodically. Cool guy in person despite his early mid-life crisis. Most realize he's a good lecturer when they can stay awake.
One of the better lectures at SFU by far. you can get an A as long you do the work. Kinney makes his lectures interesting as well as relevant. Exams are fair, and if you have a serious legit issue- he'll take it into account. Does it get any better?
I played hang man all lecture and still got a decent mark. Really boring, no useful information in lectures.
Great class
don't listen to the people below. the class is easy in the sense that everyone can get a B. If you want to get an A-(85%), study your ass off. If you want to get an A (90%), you better hope he scales it. I'll be surprised if more than one person sits at over 90% by the end of the course.
Really funny guy. Unfortunately, might be better comedy writer than a "teacher" slash professor. Learned little to nothing during lectures, which were excruciatingly boring, with the exception of Kinney's wry wit. This class is brutal, regardless of who teaches it.
The material in this course is brutal, although that's not Bryan's fault. The material is painfully boring and can get real confusing. Bryan was really helpful during office hours. I'm glad I'll be never taking this course, or another research course, ever again.
material was difficult, but he did not really lecture much in class...i was always asked myself 'Why did i even come' because everything was usually off topic. Even so, a nice prof, who does what he can do dumb everything down so we do better.
This professor is fairly easy and rather funny. However, talking in monotone all the time isn't exactly helpful against the desire to sleep in class. If only he can have a bit more variety with his voice, the class wouldn't seem so boring.
boring course material and lectures are not that helpful but he's funny & nice. his exams are not difficult. he's helpful and he responds to email fairly quickly. relatively easy compared to other profs who teach this course.
The lectures are SO boring, you'll never want to go. But he can be funny and the course load and tests are fair and pretty easy.
hv a coffee or smoke or do whatever thing 2 wake u up b4 lecture, otherwise, u'll definitely fall asleep. exams r all MC, but tricky bcoz he tests every concept. ALL he tests on is from the textbook.
very good prof =) willing to help students, and easy to talk to, course is not too hard.
Pretty useless course. Weird exams, and very questionable answers. Some of his answers contradict the text book. Final was pretty tough imo.
Once you get that Bryan is sarcastic then the course is hilarious! He is very knowledgable in many areas aside from crim ie: Monty Python. Juts get to know him. Plus overcoming cancer has made him a stronger and funnier person.
This class was nuts. Bryan did his best to make it better but it was not an easy task. Why is everybody blaming Bryan for not being helpful or clear? The tutorials were useless.Scott Brody can type fast and that's it.Never explained how to interpret the concepts or how to better aproach this subject. He just scared us good!
i think half the time i didnt even need to go to lecture, exams are right from the book! he's a really nice guy and REALLY TRIES TO HELP STUDENTS(tried to clarify a confusing topic from lecture in webCT discussion) however...HIS VOICE!...2 hours in a comfy images theatre seat listening to monotony...good thing i always bring coffee!
ramble ramble ramble. this guy makes me want to shot myself. he takes 30 mins to get to a simple point that could've been made in 1.
Of a class of 300+, maybe 70 show up to the lecture and half fall asleep. He's a super nice guy, but he gets off topic quite a bit.
easy. his midterm and final is MC. one essay with a broad topic. everything u need to know is in the textbook so u dont really need to go to lectures since u'll most likely be there to nap. the only thing they're good for is his sarcastic jokes.

Easy exams, nice guy, lectures are so freakin boring

Very boring teacher. Do not need to go to lectures just read the book.
This was actually a good class. I think a lot of people didn't like it because it was a little boring, but come on! Its a intro class - what do you expect people!! I found the lectures helped me out and he made them humorous, which was better than just reciting the stuff... so I thought he was a great prof.
Lectures are EXTREMELY boring so skip it. Just download all the notes off Webct. Midterm and final was based 99% from the textbook so actually don't even bother studying lecture notes.
Kinney is a nice guy and willing to help students if they ask. His exams are all mc and based mostly on definitions presented in the text. Class avg. for the midterm was 75. His notes are helpful in that they show you which concepts and people to focus on, but they don't need to be memorized. Just to warn you this course is memory intensive.
not a bad class. just memorize key terms and ppl in text and u'll be fine cuz tests are all MC. the paper was alrite and its only worth 9%. overall lectures were pretty useless, just read the text . it was a pretty okay class.
here's the deal w/ this class... you pay to take 2 exams and write a paper... DO NOT go to tutorials or lectures or even bother downloading notes.. COMPLETELY POINTLESS.If you read the book.. and just do key terms and names.. thats IT. seriously... easy tests but useless professor. VERY boring content. only take this course if you need to!
forget lectures, just attend tutorials. online notes r usually useless. his voice is droning and he gets way off topic. at least exams r easy and the paper is alright
the prof is actually pretty good its just how he speaks during the lectures is for mono tone and its gets boring and sleepy. mid term and exams werent that bad.
i dont noe what to say about this guy.....dont even attend the lectures just buy the textbook and pretty much remeber like 1000 names and terms for the exams......his paper was pointless......i recomend you to not take this class with him only if your good at teaching yourself the course cuz he doesnt teach your jack!!
I like this prof, he gets off topic easy in lecture, but he's funny.
Brian is a babe who rocks hard! He made 320 fun, no seriously. His teaching style is amazing, and his no bs style is refreshing.
Bryan was a great prof! Totally nice guy, lectures are a little dry but its hard to make intro to crim interesting. I would take another class with him.
I got an A- in the course. All thats required is that you study the definitions in the margins of each chapter and know some info about important people he mentions in lecture. Tests are all MC, and paper is only 750-1000 words (so its pretty short). Overall, workload isn't bad.
He's a very nice guy. Helpful, very clear in expectations. Only thing I can complain about is that 350 requires too much work for a 3 credit course. Bryan did not have enough time for the course or us students. He was always leaving early due to his other commitments.
midterm and test was all based on book, just don't even attend lecture , just tutorials for the mark, ( he used some of the same questions from the midterm on the final) w/o going to lecture , ur gonna get the same mark overall, power point are all based on the textbook,
Kinney was absolutely horrible. You don't need to attend and if you do you better have your laptop. Read your textbooks and study on your own bases. Kinney gets so side tracked it's not even funny. Plus, his jokes are horrible.
took this class in distance ed. the last paper is 40% and final is 30%. so if your good at writing take it. as for the final its 10mc, 10t/f, 10 defn, and 4 long answers. he asks stupid stats questions.
Kinney is extremely nice, he gave me the answer to a question on the final. He is monotone and his jokes are hilarious, he talks about World of warcraft every lecture, and he tries to be G. Stick to the textbook to study for exams. He asks mostly general questions. some specifics. lectures arent mandatory but they are helpful.
Lectures can be boring, but Kinney is a good prof. Course material is not too hard, as long as you stick to you readings you will do well in the class. Too much emphasis on participation, about 18% of your final mark comes from your participation, otherwise, everythin else is fair.
WAY TOO BORING. Could not concentrate on lectures because he is so boring. He makes stupid "jokes" and nobody laughs or one person laughs which is even more embarrassing for him. Not a GPA booster if the prof is so boring that you can't pay attention in lectures.
Distance Ed, course material is dry, but relatively easy. Lots of terms to memorize, thus final was hard with attention to details. TO to well: read study guide!!! know your terms, put effort into your essays. My TA was wonderful & very helpful. :)
He is not a good teacher! He does not even attempt to guide you through this difficult course. Would not recommend!!
He may be a horrible prof but he makes us laugh!!!!
At least he acknowledges he goes off topic. But overall, a medium-hard marker and a very nice, approachable guy. The project is worth more than the midterm, no final. Better get the book, he goes off topic too much in class. He was okay.I would recommend him to ppl that prefer self-learning.
I think he's great. He goes off topic and can be monotone, but he knows this and makes jokes about it. He's hilarious. This class was relatively easy. We did the assignments in class, so hardly any homework except for reading the textbook. He's definitely one of my favorite profs at SFU.
He is apprachable and flexible, but otherwise an average prof
he doesn't really teach anything. exams are textbook based. he is really funny (that's the only reason why i went to class) VERY easy marker. very approachable, so if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. the assignment seems hard, but it isn't.
Probably one of the most interesting classes I have taken at SFU thus far. Kinney, is an amazing prof, humour can be dry at times but other than that he is awesome. Talks about how the enviro. has an impact on crime. The final paper is a Literature Review, very difficult but rewarding.
Bryan is one of the funniest profs at SFU. He does tend to go on long tangents quite often. He is always able to help. Assignments are done mostly in class so there isn't a lot of work required. The only flaw is that there was unclear guidelines about the final paper. Would take a class with Bryan again!
I personally self-taught myself throughout the whole course. We basically had to memorize the textbook, and rewrite the chapters in the exams. He goes off topic, lectures are pointless, and jokes around in class. I will never take another class with him again. Does not teach anything..
Bryan is a good prof. He has a good sense of humour and makes the course interesting. However, he goes off topic quite a bit and is unclear with expectations on midterms, assignments and exams. Overall, good course with a good prof.
Kinney is a fair, kind and knowledgeable Professor but is unfortunately susceptible to going off topic in his lectures. After the midterm, his tangents got so bad that we didn't have one proper lecture. He is willing to review grades though and is a pretty easy marker. Easy A, Readings not required, attendance is required, and assignments easy.
Really nice guy and good prof.
Nice guy but terrible prof, don't even bother going to lecture total waste of time. The organization level is terrible was late to class everyday. Even the ta got frustrated with he lack of interest in teaching
listen to me if you want to get easy marks this is the go to guy. All you do is go to the tutorial get the attendance marks and just read every chapter and know the most basic ideas. In exams you just have to summarize the chapters showing some understanding then its a easy B but, if you need an A then read the chapters couple of times.
I've heard such good things about CRIM101, but not with this prof. Though HILARIOUS, he doesn't seem very passionate about the subject. He makes you memorize the textbook from cover to cover (including graphs, that he never asked you to study in the first place??) and doesn't even construct his own power points or exams, so he gets lost a lot.
Very easy class. Not very structured, where we were only marked by reading responses throughout the semester. Dr. Kinney gave us very flexible dates at the end of the semester, and often pushed back due dates. Overall seems like he wants all his students to do well, although he didn't necessarily lecture us throughout the semester. Overall: great.
Dr. Kinney is SUPER caring and understanding. He is one of the few profs that realize we are in a pandemic, so he is very understanding to all situations. Easy quizzes and final. Great prof, highly recommended.
Bryan is amazing! He is one of the only profs to realize we are in a pandemic. He is extremely caring and willing to move deadlines in order to make the lives of his students easier. Quizzes and the final were open book. My only complaint is that he can be a bit disorganized. Nevertheless, taking the course with Bryan is amazing.
Alright listen. The reason why I give this guy a high score was because this class was INSANELY easy due to his disorganization so I'm not complaining. Additionally, the TA for this semester is probably the best TA I've ever had at SFU.
Boring, disorganized lectures. Can't believe a prof can be rambling during the whole lecture without any interaction... Completely taught myself during the whole semester...
Very boring and disorganized lectures. Cancelled 3 of the lectures due to being sick. Was not active with checking email nor canvas. Was not helpful at all. Would never recommend this prof to anyone. Worst experience ive had at SFU.
Boring lectures. Grading is unfair. Participation is 20% + TA's grade hard.
People were upset that he did mostly online rather than in person but I did not mind one bit. He goes on a lot of tangents but overall makes class not boring. Easy to get a good grade. Exams were online and covered LOTS of detail so keep up with notes.
Professor Kinney clearly cares about his students, but he is super disorganized. Don't expect him or the TA's to answer any emails. Lots of cancelled lectures/tutorials. Great online lectures, but in the classroom he is really hard to hear.
Professor was kind, but I found that I was trying to teach myself the entire course because I was unable to follow/focus in his lessons. Course was disorganized with multiple cancelled lectures and tutorials.
This was the most disorganized course I have ever taken. Brian had to delay every single assignment because he forgot to put out the guidelines. He also changed the format of the midterm 3 times including the night before the midterm. He also failed to put the final out on time (the final was take-home and two questions). Do not take this course.
Bryan is so boring that just about anyone could fall asleep during his lectures. He goes off topic a lot and it is impossible to follow his slides. The midterm and final are both online, multiple-choice, and open-book. He words the questions very weirdly so you gotta read the questions carefully. It's easy to do well in his class though.
Kinney was nice and funny. He was a bit unorganized and canceled a few classes however his class gave me the opportunity to have time for my other heavy courses. Attending tutorials were very helpful considering the lecture was sorta boring and useless. Grading is very pleasant knowing 40% is technically participation. It is an easy gpa booster.
A good class, and fairly easy but my only complaint was that it was a bit unorganized. It was easily accessible online if you had to miss for any reason.
His lectures are not very engaging and honestly pointless. He talks a lot without really saying anything relevant to the coursework. If you read the chapter and take good notes about the main points/examples of the chapters then you'll do well. It's basically just a self-taught class with a mandatory tutorial. My TA was great though!
Bryan is a kind professor who will offer any help to see you succeed. He is lenient on due dates and his exams are quite easy with open-ended essay questions. If you know the readings you'll do fine. His lectures can be boring and are often unrelated, so you could do without attending. Tutorials are mandatory but help you keep up with the content.
NOPE! not an open book exam, not a GPA booster. The professor is good he's pretty humble and a nice professor, but I couldn't follow or comprehend what he was saying most of the time. The exams are some what easy, but VERY "wordy" For the sake of your mentality, don't take it. BUT, if you're willing to make an effort ON YOUR OWN, you do you.
He always got off topic and his lectures were hard to follow because he talked about random things. He was really funny if you listen, but his lectures were not very helpful. However, the assignments were easy and the exams were all multiple choice and entirely based on the textbook. Not a bad class to take, but not one of my favourites.
Bryan was a great prof but we didn't have many assignments which resulted in the midterm and final exam being most of our grade. The exams were all multiple choice which made the course easier.
The most disorganized prof ever. The midterm and final were short and long answer questions of 200-300 words. His lectures were completely useless because he would go off topic all the time, so it was hard to know what was important to take notes of. The guy is nice and funny, but he was just sooo disorganized.
He is really chill and isn't too strict with grading. The overall class average was pretty high (B+)
Very nice and funny guy but he can't teach. Majority of his lectures he just reads off the slide, derails and goes on many tangents. Final exam is worth 40% of your final grade with no assignments so if you flunk the exam you're guaranteed a C.
Okay hear me out… I actually really liked Bryan. He is very unorganized and goes off topic on tangents but it makes the course extremely easy. He also gave us a free textbook which I appreciated. He was also pretty approachable and very funny.
Not rly sure what to say, he's nice but didnt teach anything after the midterm. Spent all the lectures talking about his own research or our final project, but didnt release the project guidelines until dec 1. Very disorganized
