In an organic chemistry class where none of us were actually chemistry students, he kept topics relevant and interesting. took the time to know us all by name, always helpful and made things so simple.. actually enjoyed organic chem. how weird is that?
The epitome of what a professor should be. Incredibly helpful, very patient; passionate, knows his stuff, and an overall gem of a prof. Genuinely wanted students to succeed. Quizzes every week (44% - takes best 11 out of 14) No midterm. Practice final helped tremendously. Made a rather dry topic very entertaining, relevant and interesting.
One of the best professors I've had. I actually looked forward to coming to his class each time. He was extremely helpful, understanding, funny, and interesting. I loved how he took the time to learn each of our names. He really wanted all of us to succeed and the weekly quizzes were extremely helpful.
Love this guy! His lectures started out confusing but once you adapt to his way of teaching you'll find that it's actually amazing! He's very nice and keeps the class entertained. He even got to know us all by name - overall just an amazing professor. Never thought I'd actually enjoy going to Organic Chemistry.
Awesome guy, he takes the time to know exactly who you are and how he can help you with what you need most. a classy gentlemen and an even classier prof
Just a classy guy, who knows his chem, who knows how to teach. Compared to Johnson, he is a godly man. Weekly quizzes keep you up to date, perfect guide for exam prep, hell pass you by in the hall and say "hey (your name here), how are you?" he helps you with everything, really caring prof, real character, i really just want to give him a hug!
This was Dr. Koivisto's first time teaching CHY142, and thank god! He's great in all respects, we went through material at a fast pace but somehow he manages to drill everything in your head, and not feel behind. Hopefully he'll continue teaching this course, and lift the dark cloud that loomed over this course for years.
Loved him. I just want to take him home.
Very professional, extremely nice, and funny. Cute too! Summarizes the material so you only focus on what is required. Has weekly quizzes instead of midterm. Great approach because it keeps you up to date. You have to make 35 cue cards which ultimately prepares you for the exam. Is helpful in office hour.Made the class material seem unintimidating
He is by far my favourite professor ever! His lectures are very well thought out. Just go to class and you will do fine. He has tests every week in place of a midterm which I thought was very helpful and shows how chemistry can be actually applied to real life! Overall, he is the best professor I've had. If you don't have him you're missing out!
Fantastic professor. Made an effort to know every student despite having such a large class. Was extremely helpful and great at explaining concepts in class. His style of teaching is amazing. Has high expectations and wants to see everyone succeed. One of the best profs I have ever had.
Best professor I've ever had. A lot of material is covered quickly, but its very clear. He got to know each student individually, and cared about you as opposed to just being a number. There were weekly quizzes, which were handed back the same week. Overall he's knowledgeable and a GOOD PROFESSOR. The more you go on the harder they are to come by
Best professor I've ever had, hands down. Takes time to know everyone and he actually helps people do well in every way he can. If you do your part, it's an easy A.
AMAZING PROF!!! explains everything clearly. Has weekly quizes in class. He drops your worst 3 marks which helps A LOT! No midterms. The final was very very very similar to the ones from previous years so make sure to get your hands on those! No textbook needed!
I absolutely loveedd Bryan. Amazing professor! He was so sweet and genuine. The quizzes really help keep you up to date. Who would have thought my first A would be in organic chem!?!
Amazing prof who dedicates his time during office hours to help his students. He corrects common problems and points how we can improve each time. The best chemistry professor I've had at Ryerson (and I'm not even from Ryerson).
he was awesome!!
I have never met a professor who takes so much time to care about and help his students. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS
Best professor I have ever had! He came to every lab to personally hand back the quizzes and learned everyone's name who was in the course. If you did bad on two or more quizzes he would set up a time to meet with you to help you understand the topic. Applied organic chemistry to real world situations.
Best prof I've ever had! Lectures are interesting and easy to follow and weekly quizzes take the spot of the midterm but help you keep up! Very helpful and funny, and will make the effort to know your name :)
Easy to zone out in class if you can't pay attention (org chem is boring). Really helpful during office hours. I hated org chem but he made it easy to understand and he gives you great methods to study. Never used textbook. Struggled to keep up with quizzes but it was worth it in the end. Wish he taught more courses. Probably best prof in science.
My favourite prof ever. He is what you call a teacher. If you don't understand something, go to his office hours- they're gold (even if he seems intimidating). He helped my friends and I for 3 hours. No professor does that. Honestly, if you just practise, this course is an easy A. Also, don't zone out for the quizzes- they can save your ass.
Dropped out of this course last year due to family problems. Redid it this year. It's a hard course but BK makes it easier. Many do badly or fail, if you get less than a 90% in any quiz, study harder. Expect 20 hours of work on this course per week. Audio recordings are a must. Practice is a double must! Office hours, triple must!
Very engaging lectures, liked his Molecule of the Day additions, best prof I've had so far at Ryerson
my friends REALLY like him
The weekly quizzes are worth 35% of your total mark. Study for them and ( if you do well) it could get you from a B to an A- Overall amazing prof, not only does he care about his students in class but also goes out of his way to plan events like RyeSci match and CaB research leaders. My favourite prof at Ryerson.
Favourite professor at Ryerson so far. Really cares about his students. Also hilarious!
Always go to class, make sure you write down the questions that he does on the projector in pen because those will not be posted. Everything else is. Do his homework that he posts every class and you will do well. He is always in his office, I dunno when he even sleeps! If you do poorly it is because you were lazy. He will help you.
He is a nice and funny prof. You can tell he enjoys what he teaches and he remembers everyone by name. You can do well in the course if you know what he expects from you, which means visit office hours. There is a weekly quiz and once you get the hang of it, they are not very difficult. The course is mostly memorization.
Dr. Koivisto is a GREAT lecturer! He engages students w/ his humour &analogies. Attendance not mandatory but strongly encouraged esp. b/c he holds weekly quizzes in lieu of midterms and thoroughly goes thru class questions and quiz material right before writing the quiz. He posts his lecture 'scribbles' so thatyou can just listen & follow along.
Make and study cue-cards
By far one of those best professors at Ryerson. He really loves what he teaches which you can tell from his lectures. Most importantly, he will ALWAYS help you, with school and any other situations, and he is happy to do it. Attendance is key, and pay attention and you will do well
guy is such a snake. The final was much harder than the quizzes or anything he shows us. 120 questions in 3 hours okay bud relax.
Made lectures fun and told quirky jokes here and there. Always provided advice to those who were doing poorly and offered help. But be prepared to have a quiz every week and the labs were difficult. Our final exam was nothing that we focused on throughout the course and it was extremely difficult! Study the practice exam provided!
Bryan is pretty great. He explains very clearly and has answers to everything. He's well-spoken and consistent. His grading is fair. good sense of humour and is easy goingThe only issue is the way he organized the course. He introduces many new concepts at the end of the course which would have been helpful if he were to introduce them throughout.
So I took this class twice. The first time, I admittedly did not put any effort into it and ended up with a D-. I took the class a second time, and finished with an A+ (with a lab exemption of course). Koivisto is an amazing prof. It's really not hard to do well. Although he's changing the format of the course for years to come, so no more quizzes.
He's cute. There's one quiz every week. Final is TOUGH (study the mock exam!!! I can't stress this enough). No midterm though. Labs are long and not easy, also very time-consuming. He knows his stuff very well. Lectures are great. He's cute.
The prof is very passionate and his humor helped make classes fun. He was really helpful outside of class. In organic chem, I was actually disappointed because the questions in the final were all mc and not in the same format as the quizzez which was annoying
Prof Koivisto really knows his stuff and explains topics extremely well. His lectures are always engaging - constantly taking notes and he grabs your attention, makes you learn by bringing you up to the board to try out questions yourself. Very helpful, you can drop by his office to ask him to go over any questions from the problem set that you d
He wants all students to do well so he personally hands back quizzes in the labs and schedules a time for you to meet with him to get help if you didn't do well on the quiz. He also applies what we are learning in class to the real world with a new topic every lecture.
To be honest, this class was tough... but the material is tough and unlike other profs, he actually took the time to break it down for us and worked really hard to deliver his message. Taking biochem and advanced biochem, I really really missed his classes. Work hard and you'll ace this course. I'm considering retaking this course for fun.
Hello, this is my favourite prof, by far. Goodbye.
MY FAVOURITE!! Very funny, and attending his lectures is a must! You actually need to make the effort to do well, but he's willing to help! THE MOCK EXAM is a replica of the final exam with a few changes, of course. No games/ no tricks being played. He genuinely wants you to do well. Make cue cards. KEEP PRACTICING and you should be fine.
BK was awesome! When it comes to this course you can do really well if you try. I suggest making the cue cards as you go along(don't just leave it till the end of the semester) and do the problem sets each week to prepare for the quizzes. Final exam is exactly like the mock exam! Don't be intimidated by orgo, he makes it possible to do really well!
Bryan was a great prof simple as that. He makes the effort to actually learns everyone's name in the class which makes you feel better. The quiz section is 35% of the course SO DO WELL ON THE QUIZZES THEYRE EASY! Study the mock exam for the final!!! and maybe get your hands on a last years mock exam. Never knew my first A would be in Organic Chem
Get the mock exam, its worth the relief of a familiar final exam. Go to all of your lectures and stay caught up with practise questions and you'll ace your quizzes. No midterm, just a pretty fair quiz every week. A lot to know for the course but he does a good job in teaching it. Make sure you're paying attention, he goes fast.
Dr. Koivisto is probably one of the most amazing profs ever! His lectures are not boring and he is just a great person. Organic chemistry is a hard course, but if you show up to lectures, take notes and attend SLG sessions you should be fine. I would take a class with him again! The exam is tough and make sure you get the mock exam!!
teaches well but based on his own personal understanding, which isnt a bad thing. you have to learn how to understand things and visual based on yourself and not his way. cue cards are life. hes a great guy and pretty cool
Charming guy, bad prof. Rushes through topics, calls you out in class so you can look stupid in front of everyone if you don't know your stuff. The fact that he went through a practice exam that's supposed to take 3 hours to complete in 1 hour says enough about his teaching style.
real talks, just pay attention in lectures, take good notes, do your practice quizzes early, ask him questions in office hours and you'll do great! final rating: 10.5/10 also, he cares a lot about his students which I really appreciate so don't be too shy to ask him questions :) ps. labs are hard so boost your grade w/ the weekly quizzes
He is an awesome guy both teaching and personality wise. He is always ready to help. He gives quizzes every weak, but they are so fair.
He is amazing, helped inside and out of the class to become a better student.
Dr. Koivisto made me actually enjoy organic chemistry!! As a continuing education student, I hadn't taken chemistry in over 5 years, so I was really nervous. The class atmosphere is so relaxed - it's great. He gives amazing feedback and the class overall was structured really well, ie. later concepts build on earlier ones, so it's easy to follow.
Hands down best prof at Ryerson!! Highly recommend, final is tough but if you pay attention in class and ask Qs during his office hours you'll be fine. Hilarious guy who cares about his students and loves what he teaches.
Super nice and easy going professor! Aced the weekly quizzes that are in place of a midterm without going to class much (mainly self-taught). The exam is also easy since it's very similar to the mock exam that he sells (i.e., similar questions, different molecules). Just study the mock exam and additional synthesis problems to ace the exam!
funniest prof ever and makes lectures so great to attend
Loved taking this class, Bryan made the lectures entertaining, even though the material was a little heavy if you didn't pay attention. Many students did learn the material independently because he does move fast through lectures. Only class this semester that I didn't skip at all!!
Bryan was an amazing prof. Weekly quizzes but with tutorials that explained how to answer questions and also problem sets, you should be fine. He made every lecture exciting and was clear on every topic he taught.
Bryan does an amazing job at teaching a course that could be incredibly boring in a way that you can do well. Notes are minimal; cue cards are the way. Labs aren't too bad if you did decent in 113. With constant work you can do well with his weekly quizzes and exam. Also, awesome and hilarious guy, don't skip lectures. Shoutout to BK!
I was so grateful to have Dr. Koivisto as my prof. He is such a nice guy and really wants his students to do well. His lectures were super engaging and he broke down complicated concepts and made them easy to understand. He made organic chem enjoyable and I would definite take orgo 2! Make sure to attend lectures and use cue cards to study!
Only prof I've met that tries to remember everyone's name. Super charismatic guy that cares about his students. He doesn't spoon feed you (b/c it is a tough course) but gives you the tools you need to succeed. Weekly quizzes instead of midterms forced you to keep you on top of your work. Not an easy A, but put in the work and you'll do well.
My favourite prof at ryerson. He genuinely cares about his students and this is what makes him even more likeable. I always hated orgo, but going to Bryan's lectures made me enjoy the course. This course had no midterm but weekly quizzes which could easily make or break your grade. My advice would be to take these quizzes seriously! 10/10 prof tho
absolutely horrible communication skills with his students. doesn't seem to care about the student's perspective and their drive for good marks as he tediously docks marks left and right for things like he is purposely trying to give you the lowest mark possible.
constantly complaining on the class announcement board and emails about students contacting him for clarification on assignment outlines even though his description of the assignment outlines are extremely vague and changed last minute. very condescending and rude when responding to student questions on zoom.
this man is straight up RUDE. no concept of professionalism in the work place. always on some sort of power trip, extreme condescending tone and no regard for student effort when it comes to their grades or overall course work. hard to do well in this course when marks are constantly taken off for unnecessary reasons.
it is very apparent that his teaching methods are based in the need for validation through power and authority. doesn't actually care if students so well or not (or how much they try), but rather how confusing he can make his instructions and how "well" students can keep up with his unrealistic expectations (p.s. you can't).
Reviews on this site are saying he's rude to students and doesn't care about them. I'd argue the opposite. He is constantly responding to emails and spending time explaining things to students 1 on 1. He can grade hard but only because genuinely wants to see you improve! Still, if you really try, an A should come easy.
He is nice but I would've given him a better a rating if HE WASN'T SO PETTY. He thinks that out of all the courses you are enrolled in, his will be the most important. He can get very passive aggressive, is never organized and changed things up throughout the semester like 5 times. Maybe it was so bad because this year was online but damn dude.
Pre-record lecture videos and synchronous lectures were great. You can tell he enjoys teaching organic chemistry but the thing is he does have a power trip and a bit petty. Will expect you to prioritize his class over your other 3-4 classes. Tons of passive-aggressive announcements. ALOT of time consuming assignments that are worth very little.
He sounds petty a lot, I find it funny. Really tries to teach you about life, how to interact with profs, etc. so its not just about organic chemistry. Weekly quizzes and videos, he dropped the worst three of each. 6 labs with 3 manuscripts. Final had a video portion, mcq, and mechanisms via zoom. Ask questions and keep up you should be fine.
Everything you need is in the lectures and explained well but oh my goodness I have never had a prof I was so afraid to email. He was insanely petty and passive aggressive, and there's no way you're getting out of this class with a good mark if you don't prioritize it over all your other courses.
Professor Koivisto is great! Make sure you attend the lectures, ask any questions you have, and practice, practice, practice! If you do this, a grade over 80 is guaranteed. He is helpful, answers emails within a few hours or less. Strongly recommend!
Honestly, I did not like Bryan in the beginning because he had a different technique of teaching and It made organic chemistry for many students stressful, two of my friends dropped the course after 1 month, I used to think Organic chemistry is one of the hardest courses but Bryan knows what he's doing and I am thankful for what I learned from him
Bryan will go out of his way to help students understand and enjoy the course content. He doesn't tolerate complaining and treats students like adults but will joke around and chat during lecture. Overall, I came out of his class having learned just as much about life as I had about organic chemistry.
Pre-recorded lecture videos were excellent, but sometimes live lectures weren't that helpful. LOTS of assignments (manuscripts, lab data, weekly video+live quizzes), but they were marked reasonably. Labs could've been more organized - they were done at home and took up SO much time since many experiments didn't work the way they were supposed to.
He knows the content and is a great lecturer. His recorded lectures were enough to understand the topics. However, he is also very disorganized and his course was the most overwhelming. Didn't expect it to be easy, but i think we struggled more bc of his sudden changes and mistakes than bc of the content. Also, he could answer his email better
Worst professor at Ryerson University! He is a hypocrite who thinks very highly of himself and respects only those whom he likes. He speaks nicely to his female students and combative with his male students. This is clear since his research team is made up of all female students and one male student. Insecurity is portrayed in his teaching ability.
The best professor Ive had at Ryerson!! Lectures are excellent, and hes very helpful if you actually take the time to ask him questions if you dont understand. If you do the practice problems every week and attend class, you will do well! Youll learn a lot more life skills than orgo in this class, which is a plus!
so RUDE, aggressive, he literally said don't send me email I won't respond to them, so many quizzes, I WOULD never EVER TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS WILD GUY
He seems annoyed to be teaching the class - he stated several times that he does not enjoy teaching this section. He teaches only to the 5-10 students who actually get a chance to ask questions. He provides vague descriptions of what he wants and then condescending clarification after submission. He tries too hard to make it 'fun', you don't learn.
probably the toughest course thus far, bryan has ruined my love for chemistry as a whole. expect to study daily due to the tons of quizzes u will need to be doing. very passive aggressive with his comments regarding submission feedbacks & intimidating when asking for help. focusses on the same 5-10 students who ask questions. would never take again
if you have the chance to choose another professor, spare yourself the stress and take it with them instead. Bryan gives off the "cool professor" vibes in the beginning but hits u with hundreds of tough quizzes due every single week. his method of teaching the class does not help whatsoever and is extremely passive aggressive. a big no!
Honestly, he's funny at times but is so passive aggressive. He thinks his course is the only one you have. There are weekly live and video quizzes, lectures are long, and content is pretty heavy. He isn't the hardest prof I have had, but his personality makes it hard to approach him. I would avoid him if you can.
Bryan is a great professor and will take the chance to help you if you ask for it. The course is difficult in terms of its content but as long as you listen to his lectures and do the problem sets you will pass with a good grade. He gives feedback and is a fair grader, this is my second time having him and I enjoyed his courses both times!
He made chem SO easy. He was very accessible for one-on-one questions, provided in-depth feedback for labs, and pre-recorded lectures so that you could watch in your own time. Everything was from the slides and he provided homework questions that would have same questions from the weekly quizzes. Just follow instructions to the T for labs.
Disrespectful professor. Don't take him at all. If students had the ability to vote out a professor for their own well being, I would choose Bryan. Disgusting.
Organic 2 is a very difficult course but he designed it so everyone can succeed. He had office hours every week, so we could ask him questions and he always helped me understand difficult concepts. There were weekly quizzes worth 56%, but there were also problem sets provided that are extremely similar to the quiz.
Bryan is a very enjoyable prof. Hes very care free but will not take any BS. Weekly quizzes which are moderately challenging but total for half your grade. No midterm. Had his covid videos posted so you could watch them for extra clarification. Hes super friendly and will answer any orgo question you ask him. I've never seen an office hours so busy
Does a great job at making the subject fun and interesting. Very reachable and always willing to help if you just ask.
had him for chy242 and he was amazinggg. he teaches so well. since we had quizzes every week, I was super ready for the final exam. his quizzes and final exams are fair and he makes the lectures fun.
Explains the incredibly well, felt this was one of those classes where the knowledge actually stayed with me through the years. Weekly quizzes are easy marks, lots of opportunities to get your grades up, and one thing I liked was the fragmented final exam.
Bryan is a decent prof & has designed the course so that anyone can succeed in such a hard subject. He's always available to help! I would say he does show favouritism towards certain students in terms of giving more marks/proposing opportunities/support... man does notgafff but his course is easy
Do the NMR problems and know the cue cards from the slides (guaranteed an 80+). He randomly goes into weird tangents about if you can't do this you're dumb.Super unprofessional and rude. Whenever I submitted the same wrong answer as my friend (that was partially right), I would get 0 but they would get part marks, so definitely some favouritism.
CHY 104- Do all the problem sets no matter what. That mostly what the weekly tests were off. Final assignment pretty easy. Final exam is culminating, do all problem sets and class question. If you do them and understand it you'll be just fine. Chemistry was my nightmare in HS but it was pretty easy here.
Bryan is unprofessional. During office hours, he insulted me instead of helping and ignored my emails while responding to others. He shows favoritism and is passively aggressive, and unhelpful. He acts more like a petty competitor than a teacher. His behavior is disrespectful and unfair. I really hope I won't have to take his class again. BIG NO!!
Bryan is a great prof who makes this tough course accessible. Weekly quizzes and practice sets help you nail the material. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for prep!
He gave us weekly quizzes and it really helped to prepare for the final. His teaching style is very connected with students and I like how he truly cares.
He's a really sweet professor and you can tell he cares for his students. If you go to his office hours for help he is more than happy to explain the content. I had a horrible experience with chemistry before so he was like a breath of fresh air. Great guy.
