Nice guy but expects everyone to be completely accurate on dates and add all information about everything. This is difficult for a class spanning three and a half million years. He just graduated from Cambridge and expects all students to live up to Cambridge standards. Very little class discussion. Had a 4.0 in Hist., it was my minor (got a C).
Nice guy, loves History, but expects all lot out of his students. Notes on TRACS so its helpful, but test are pretty hard. Essays are 70 pts of your exam and he expects you to remember a lot. But he gives you the essay questions before hand and is willing to help. Good class but be ready for alot of studying to make anything more than a C.
Good professor who knows his material. Although the essay grading can be a little difficult, it is definitely manageable. Dr. Mann is an Anglophile so be prepared to know your British History.
good prof!may seem a bit harsh at start of semester but hang on, actually turned out to be one of my best prof's.very helpful power pt present.,very organized, excellent study guides, gives potential essays for exams, holds study sessions (go to them!very worth it!)If he taught hist 1320, I would take it w/him, u still hv to do your part though-STUDY!
Mr. Mann is awesome! His quizzes are writing your name on a piece of paper when its cold or rainy, because a lot of people don't show. Also he has a small portion of his tests multiple choice so that was nice & he gives you the essays before the exams so there's no reason not to be prepared. Definently a lot better than most of the history teachers
Prof Mann definitely knew what HE was talking about. However, he liked to literally breeze through his powerpoints and then call it a day. I learned absolutely nothing during class time. The Holocaust didn't even get a full slide....
Do NOT take him. Just reads word for word from his Powerpoint. I guess thats good if you don't want to read your textbook.. But it is really boring. Yes, we get your short! Don't need your shortness humor every class period. His grading is pretty strict, so your essays better be near perfect to get a good grade. If you take him, good luck!
I took professor Mann in the summer at ACC and it was probably the worst experience of my life. He think he knows everything about history and wants you to be able to write back every single thing he told you in the lecture on tests. If you dont, you get a D. I probably studies 10-15+ hours every week and got a C. DONOT TAKE! Also thinks he is funn
So annoying. Goes on and on about nothing. Save yourself from his useless BS.
He must get mixed reviews because he changes teaching methods every semester. He expects you to read the book, take a timed online quiz and then he lectures the information! This seems backwards especially since after the quiz you will learn details from his lecture that would have helped. Seems to be a nice guy but not too friendly or helpful.
NOT an easy class. History is my minor and it gave me a hard time. You definitely need to study hard to get a good grade. I really enjoyed Dr. Mann's style of presenting information. No reason not to do well if you study, as he gives everything word for word like it will be on the test at least a week in advance. I will definitely take him again.
Dr. Mann is great once you figure out what he expects. His tests are hard because of the amount of info you need to know but they are straight forward. If you go to class, take notes over the powerpoints, and study hard for his tests you will do great.I got an A in his world hist class and am taking him again for English hist.
Pretty much reads straight from powerpoints and test questions come from power points. It is not necesary to buy the new expensive books
Test are straight from powerpoint. enjoyable class. Class isn't to hard. If you go to class even though he does not take attendance he will notice and help you with your final grade if you need it.
One of the easiest classes iv taken here so far. Only three test gives out a review for the test short answer and essay. Attendance isn't mandatory basically went to class once a week and got all of my short answer and essay questions out of the book passed the class with A
Amusing lecturer, knowledgeable of English History. TA grades the tests via his instructions. When there is a book to read for an unit it will be on the exam.
Very nice guy. Definetly not a boring class. Attendance is not mandatory but he takes notice to those who go and will help you out in the end. Prepare to put in A LOT of effort. There is a quiz online for every chapter. I recommend reading each chapter and keeping up with the quizzes. Plan for a whole weekend of studying and memorizing for each tes
Amazing prof! Fun and knowledgeable. Very fair in his grading, as he gives students plenty of opportunities, and thus expects a lot from his students in returen but will still help them along if needed. Attendance not mandatory, but if you don't go, good luck on the test! Online quiz for each chapter read...not easy, but recommended!
As a 4.0 student, I expect survey classes to provide context and relevancy. I also expect that exams will be graded on something other than regurgitation. I was disappointed on both counts. Exams are more about spewing back facts that hurdle at you at 100mph, and have nothing to do with actually understanding the information presented.
The teacher provided the exam questions in advance but was very difficult on grading. I found the textbook to be more informative than his lectures. I would not attend another class taught by Mann.
Dr. Mann is very knowledgeable teacher. However, many students with myself included did not want to ask questions in class because of how he responds. If he was a little more understanding to our needs or questions, we wouldn't leave so confused or insulted. Thankfully, the class is interesting enough to my attention, however, his attitude sucks
Hardest teacher I have ever had right here. Be prepared to spend the majority of your semester working on study guides or talking to him outside of class. It's not just about lecture or the book.. It's about everything you can include in essays and ID Terms.. Stay on top of everthing daily! of course, if you would like a good/fair grade.
One of my most favorite professors. Willing to help always, and offer advice. Highly recommend to do your reading. Majority of these rude comments are prob from lazy students. Who have never understood what it is to truly learn. If you want a valuable teacher rich with knowledge then Dr. Mann is the best
By far one of the best history professors I've had. Has a real love for his topic and it shows in how he teaches. Exams are challenging and essay based but I believe it is department-wide. He may seem gruff but he his down to Earth. Wish I had him for part 2.
I'm currently taking Dr. Mann's course - I love his class ...even though I have a C. Tests are essay based and HARD! Online quizzes are difficult as well. He's has endless knowledge of his subject matter and class is interesting. If I wasn't Hellbent on graduating with honors, I'd take him for part II. Highly recommend his class - STUDY constantly!
Tests are short answer and essay only. Posts all power points on TRACS and all quizzes are online and directly from the book. Really interesting professor and knows what he is talking about especially when talking about British History. Tests are hard but manageable if you study. Posts a study guide on TRACS 2 weeks before the test (on average).
Dr. Mann has a really dry sense of humor and is very straight-forward about the content of his class. It takes forever to get your tests back because he's spread so thin with the amount of courses he's teaching, but he is likewise understanding about everyone else's busy schedules. Study and read the book, go over the PowerPoints.
Mean spirited, likes to act as if he cares but he'll set you up for failure. just another little man who is insecure and out of his league.
NOT very helpful. If you ask him a question, he'll give u a website...not very scholarly.
I have taken 3 of his classes 3315, 3316, 4317. Got As in all of them. He always was very helpful and accommodating. He tells you at the start that his class is not easy but if you follow the readings and ask for help you will do fine.
Mann is very nice and funny. He loves sports and vague references. His tests are fairly straightfoward: ID terms and Essays. However his lectures are exteremly boring and not entirely clear. He wants you to give the 5 W's for tests but doesnt explain that well himself. Doesnt count attendence and basically just reads off s slides n TRACs anyway
Dr. Mann is nice enough, and lectures off slides. He does not clearly state what is important to know on his essay tests - just "tell me what you know." Whatever you know, it is never enough. Very harsh grading. It's all just memorization, but you need to know WHAT to memorize. If all TX State instructors were like him, I would switch schools.
He was a GREAT professor. Very helpful and lenient with his research paper and his essay exams. Which is awesome! if you knew the stuff and gave one good essay and a few on the ID's you were good. Pretty straight forward guy. And he knows his stuff and hes passionate about it. I really recommend him! oh and he HATES CELL PHONES
grading is on curve therefore hard to know what youll end up with, MEMORIZATION is key, uses essay testing method and provides a review with essay prompts & terms you have to know the definition 4, he'll choose a random amount from the sheet 4 the test, overall 4 tests, 1 report, powerpoints provided, attendance isn't mandatory, got a B
Amazing professor! He is funny and you will have a great time if you enjoy Monty Python and/or Game of Thrones. He definitely knows his stuff but his exams will not be easy. Lots of memorization but it is definitely worth it. I will be taking him again!
I have taken Dr Mann for 3 different classes. Going to class is not mandatory but it helps. He keeps track of who attends and it could help you if you ever need assistance. Tests are essays. He give you the tests questions. You have to prepare and if you do the class is easy. assistant is nice and always listens.
He takes a long time grading exams and you may only get one out of the three exams back. Memorization is key for his exams.
I enjoyed having Mann for world civilizations but we spent 12 the class on medieval Europe. Really was hoping for a more world civ class and not western civ. He also takes forever to grade exams wo a TA. He also was sick alot and had class cancelled so many times. He is a nice guy and really tries to help the class.
I think I learned more in this class about history than i could have ever imagined learning in one semester. Passionate professor. Great, informative lectures. Does his best to make content relevant to students. Tests are pretty much based on his lectures and what's on the slide presentations. Show up to class, take lots of notes and you'll pass.
Dr. Mann is a personable and likable professor. While you must certainly put in the effort, he respects his students and wants to see them succeed. There is a lot of reading and writing, which is to be expected in a graduate level course.
He does not use the book, just his PPTs. He poses himself as being nonchalant about attendance but gets upset if you're not. He cancels a lot of classes and almost seems he doesn't want to be there when he is there. Tests for this class were pick 3 essays out of 6. He says just get the point across, but make sure they are long or they'll not count.
Make sure to read before class so you will have a better understanding of the material. His tests are open response and he is very specific in what he wants. Half of the test asks for a small answer, maybe a sentence. The other half, you need more detailed information in order to write about a page or more.
Dr. Mann is a tough grader on tests and the essays he assigns for out of class. He expects that if you take his class, you try. He is always willing to talk about the lecture material if it gets confusing, but he is really clear in class. Make sure you study for the tests!! I've taken 3 classes with him though, I completely recommend him
My favorite history teacher!! He expects a lot out of you, tough grader on the tests but really prepares you for them and is always willing to help if you need it. Take it!!
He is the reason Texas State is the best place to go to school. He come in to class and KNOWS what he is talking about. You feel the need to ask him off the cuff questions about England and English history. I waited to take the next history class I needed in order to take with him. If you get to take his class, DO IT.
Pretty solid class - interesting. He knows his topics- comes off a little arrogant - tests aren't hard if you study and read everything assigned.
Good at getting his information across. Learn the material and you'll do golden. 2 tests, 1 essay.
I've taken him for 2 classes, he's great! The tests are all essay, but he gives you a review and if you study, they're easy. There are only 2 tests so they're very important and there's one essay. He might do a random extra credit. On a day where nobody showed up he showed a video that we referenced on the final for 5 extra points.
Take another teacher if you can. He teach from a PowerPoint. His voice is deep but he speaks low so it sound like he is mumbling a lot. I could barely hear him. He just didn't do it for me and make class interesting. He is a very slow grader. Attendance not mandatory. Gives u review with everything that could possibly be on test though.
The best professor I have had at Texas State. You will actually learn in this class.
He teaches from a power point, but to me that didn't make any difference. The exams were both essay, and there is one paper due. He gives the reviews for both exams weeks in advance and its up to you to fill the review out and study. I liked him a lot and I thought he was funny. Attendance wasn't mandatory and I never opened the book.
Class is literally lectures based on Mann's slides. They are dense but interesting. He does not assign any readings. You will want the textbook to study from for tests & for your term paper. Attend class, take notes, study directly from study guides he provides and you'll do fine. Also - he's really helpful & expectations for this class are point!
Dr. Mann opened every lecture talking about his children and telling some hilarious story to set a great mood for the class. His PowerPoints are vague so paying attention to lectures is important, but his lectures are really interesting and he always relates them to modern things. One of my favorite classes by far.
I had Dr. Mann last semester for western civ 2310. Mind you I am not the greatest student, but I absolutely LOVED coming to his class. He makes it clear that he doesn't care if you come, but if you don't he will be less willing to help you the next semester. He is a very fair grader. He might be my favorite professor so far. Great guy.
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't come you miss a lot of good information that isn't on the slides. He gives test reviews a week in advance and tests are essay based with some multiple choice, but he gives the essay questions on the review so prepare ahead of time and you'll be good.
May come off as a hard ass at the beginning but a real nice guy! Test material is pulled directly from his lectures (so while attendance is optional, if you want a better grade go to the lectures as some things are not in the book). Makes some jokes in lecture, so they're bearable. The research paper is pretty easy as well.
Professor Mann doesn't take attendance, and his knowledge is vast. His tests are based solely on a review he gives you in advance; the review will ruin your life because of the myriad of dates, names, and info you have to memorize. There are two exams and one term paper. The exams consist of 2 essays and 4 short answers each. He's tough but fair.
Mann is the best. I always end up laughing in his class. His lectures are amazing, though he will get distracted always for the first ten minutes of class. His TA, Shina, graded everything and made a groupme herself where she answered our questions. 3 grades; test, paper, test. All fairly easy, just attend study sesh. Take notes on what he says.
Okay lecture. Get a review but it is basically entire class in concentrated bullet points. Fair grader but this is history so that means details, details, details not just a general understanding of the importance. 2 test 1paper. Test are 2 in class essays, and 8 paragraph long ID's. Paper own topic lots of time to write. Take Paddison
Mann is a bit brusque in his demeanor and can come across as not very approachable. Have not had a college prof as strict as him on cellphones, that's usually high school where they care that much. He's funny though and it's a pretty clear and straight forward class, 3 essay-style exams and one paper. Just show up, be respectful and you'll do fine.
I barely attended lecture after we got to industrial era Britain (so boring) and studied really hard for the exams and put in a lot of time and research into my paper and I did extremely well. Attendance is not mandatory but if you need help with your grades later on, they'll take note ofthat. He's fun & smart but you'll mostly interact with the TA
Dr. Mann is a great professor. He obviously cares about history and makes things easy to understand by using scenarios that students can comprehend. Lots of powerpoint, which he posts online just before class starts, and lots of great info in the lectures. My favorite history teacher by far!
Great guy. if you're into sports lingo, he's your man. At first he seemed sort of negative but in reality he's just very honest. Go to his office hours & just introduce yourself. Has a deep passion for all things Europe. Difficult class but if you make it known that you try your best, you shouldn't have to worry! DO NOT CRAM FOR THE EXAMS LOL
Knowledgable. Takes his sweet time putting in grades and really makes you work for it. no phones, no computers, no apple watches, no recording lectures.
Awful!
He knows his stuff about British history and wants you to prove to him in tests that you do too. Asks you to include as much detail from lecture as possible in exams and isn't too concerned with formatting as long as its still understandable. Out of class assignments were graded pretty easy, he mostly just wants to make sure you do it. Great class!
His AIs suck. They try to look good for him to rate them and they grade on dumb details like a space missing on fill in the blank quizzes. He doesnt even do much. He just does hours of lectures and lets the AIs ruin everything!!
The professor is really nice & funny. Makes lecture entertaining. Class consists of 2 exams & 1 paper. Exams are essay prompts that hell give you ahead of time. Just study!
Hes funny, dont get me wrong. But his lectures are boring and he gives very vague instructions for the midterm and final. I studied for weeks for both and still made a 75. Im not really sure what he was looking for but hes not very available outside of class so Ill never know. Glad to be done with this.
Professor Mann, is a very understanding professor who if you at least give him some info on whats going on will be quite lenient. Yes his lectures are very information heavy, but this is history and if you dont come to class and get a bad grade thats all you. His tests are based on important individuals, and question prompts. Just review notes!
Dr. Mann was a great professor I took him for History of England to 1603 and loved it that I decided to enroll in the second half even though it is not required for me anymore. Despite the other reviews here he is a great professor & makes you earn it because that is what college is for & they are just looking for easy A's.
the class itself wasn't too hard. it was mainly just taking notes. their is only a midterm, final exam, and a research essay. both the midterm and the final are essay test so make sure to study! he can be a tough grader which is why I ended up with a C but you know what they say "C's get degrees"
The lectures are basically a reiteration of what is provided on Canvas in the notes. Only three assignments the whole course, very easy to fail or pass this course. If you have detail memorization problems beware this class. He is friendly and available sometimes, hardly responsive to email. There is no extra credit as far as I could find out.
lecture heavy I did not buy the book and passed. Memorization and close attention to details are needed when testing. 2 tests that are essay style & one paper. As long as you study the slides, write good notes since the beginning of the semester you will do good! at first he seemed stuck up but turned out to be cool, funny, understanding professor!
His test (2) is written essays. He has a study guide with 8-10 questions, he picks 4 on the test. You pick 2 and write 3-4 pages on the topic. I honestly hated this way of testing and most history professors at Texas State do this also. Not much you will learn during lectures, that's why I didn't go for like 3 weeks and chose my mental health.
There are only 3 grades for the class, so study harder than you think for tests 1 and 2 which are worth 80% of your grade. Professor will often ridicule students who ask questions he deems stupid but is often held by the majority of the class. Dont expect a single grade to come back anytime before the drop period or even after midterms. EZ essay
If all professors were like Dr. Mann, I would leave this university. Only three grades for the whole semester, with the first grade (the midterm exam!) not being graded until just about a month before the semester was over. The entire semester I was guessing what grade I may come out with. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this man's class.
He gives great lectures and is pretty funny but regardless his lectures can still be a bit overwhelming. He's very knowledgeable and quite accommodating/flexible to class concerns about due dates and the content of tests. His exams are very hard but he does give you the questions ahead of time to study. There is only a midterm and final though.
Tried my best on the essay assignment and only got a 90. Canvas shows that the highest grade in the class was a 90. Don't know why he doesn't just curve these things for everybody it's like he enjoys tanking our GPAs. He's also just a big yapper. He's a funny dude but the test material is so dense and he expects too much in my opinion.
Heavy lecture, if you don't go to class you most likely will not pass (but attendance is not mandatory). He very funny and tries to make every class as fun as Ancient England can get. Loved this class and I love Dr. Mann (I already signed up for the next course with him).
Bryan Mann is by far the worst professor I have ever taken at this University. He single handedly made me change my major away from history because of his horrendous teaching style. He grades on 2 essay exams and 1 city paper with as little instruction as he could get away with. He has good lectures, but lectures are a bad teaching style.
This class made me change my major away from history. There are only 3 grades in the class. He expects you to memorize a impossible amount of content with no guidance. The lectures are boring and he rambles alot. Hard to get ahold of outside of class and when you did, he would be very rude in his answers. DON"T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Bad teacher, take Bryan Glass. Extremely excessive memorization required, only (2 exams, 1 essay), hard to get passing grades. Birth/death dates, family lines, and areas must be memorized. Textbook not needed if you attend lectures but insane material that was impossible for me to to retain. Exam reviews 1/2 weeks b4 exams, answr 4 those on quizlet
While I really liked Dr. Mann as a person, he frustrated me as a professor. As an award winning history student, I struggled to keep up in his class, and it was my first college final grade that wasn't an A. He refused to give 100s on assignments that had no mistakes, and offered no feedback. We were only graded on four assignments, mostly 2 tests.
Only 4 grades, He is very lecture-heavy but reads off the slides and continues to talk about what is on the slide but doesn't go over what's for the exam the exam. Review is out days before the exam, but it doesn't explicate what you need to know for each term. Class is not very fun to be in,no extra activities to help with learning. exam heavy.
Very intelligent & funny professor. Wonderful story telling & engaging lectures. I gained a lot from this class and he will help you show up. I took this in the summer & there were 3 tests and 1 paper. Extremely memorization heavy. Lucky to have a helpful TA too!
Professor Mann is very passionate about his job and his students, but his intentions do not outweigh his actions. He is an insanely tough grader and does not provide clear criteria for his midterm or final exam, which are written response-based. I went to class every day, took detailed notes, and did the study guide in great detail, for nothing.
He was a great man who understood what he was teaching. There are only four assignments, so study for each heavily. He goes based on a textbook, but you don't need it. The only negatives are difficulty; he usually takes about two weeks to grade each test. I would take again!
Dr. Mann gives amazing lectures and his exams rely mainly on them. Be prepared to write essays on exam days and to take a lot of notes of what he speaks. He always gives out exam guides and he has a strict no-phones policy. Other than that, he presents the material in a really engaging way, as if he was telling you a story.
Dr. Mann's lectures are incredible, and I've learned so much about history and the world through his class. Grading is a little scary as there are only three assignments: An essay, a midterm, and a final, which can be graded a little tough. However, he's funny and helpful if you reach him outside of class.
There are only 2 Exams (midterm and final) that consist of 4 essay questions, where you have to write at least 3 pages, and 4 terms of ID where you need to write 3-5 sentences of the who, what, when, where, and significance. Along with the exams there is only one other assignment which is a paper. He is a tough grader.
Dr. Mann is an awesome professor!! He is very passionate and knowledgeable and cares a lot about his students. If you show up to class, take notes, and study for the exams then you should do fine. He can be a tough grader, but he wants his students to do well. I've learned a lot by taking his classes. Plus he's pretty funny :)
Not enough grades. Somewhat not as organized as he should. Had a hard time following him. Just very average at best.
Class is incredibly hard if you don't study. The material didn't click for me, and I struggled. He's definitely a caring professor, and he's great at teaching, but if you're not passionate about the subject, it might not be the right class. Especially with there only being 3 grades (2 tests 70% or grade, and 1 group project, 30% of grade)
Dr. Mann's classes are excellent albeit a little fast paced for the sheer amount of matter he covers in his lectures. Super chill and full of charisma but takes cheating very seriously. Main work consists of written in-class essays but they are few and far between, and he gives more than adequate test prep to handle it. I strongly recommend him.
Not even gonna lie, every lecture was a complete information overload. I love history classes, but his class is so hard to follow. He gets sidetracked easily, and you only have 3 GRADES FOR THE WHOLE CLASS. No extra credit opportunities. This class was so boring and made me second-guess my history minor... Please avoid if you can.
I think all the negative reviews are from people that dont show up to class and expect the professor to be lenient with them. That being said, if you show up to class and just listen, youll do just fine. Hes very understanding. He asks a lot for the writing tests, but its honestly not that bad. Hes very caring and funny.
Dr. Mann is awesome. His lectures are funny and engaging. Attendance is not mandatory, but class is actually fun and he lectures like telling a story. 2 in class written tests and a research paper are the only grades. Tests are tough and detail oriented, but show up and you'll do fine. You have 2 months to do the research paper. Great class.
As a lecturer, Prof. Mann is second to none. The only real issue is the way he conducts his exams. I wish he would clearly outline his essay standards prior to exams so that we aren't caught as off-guard. Do not take him if you care about your GPA. Good as he is as a person, the elusiveness of his standards are ultimately a disservice to students.
Dr. Mann is my favorite professor in the History department at Texas State. Knew a ton about the subject and really got me into English history. He is super understanding of what it's like to be a student and wants you to succeed. Shoutout the goat
Awesome professor, I enjoyed his lectures and his class. If you take him beware that the midterm and final are both worth 40% of your grade EACH, but if you study and pay attention in class you'll be fine. He gives you the exam questions in advance which is very helpful.
