Best instructor I have had at IUPUI so far, and certainly better than anyone else in the math dept. I've had.
One of the best math Professors I have every had.
The best math teacher I have _ever_ had. Very helpful and patient. Organized and clear. I had taken this course previously, had to drop because teacher sucked - took Bryan's class, and got an A.
Great prof. knows what he's talking about.
Very clear, easy to understand, and always willing to help. And as a bonus ... interesting anecdotes!
Very nice professor who is willing to help. Gives great exemples of how what you're learning applies to the real world. The thing I liked most is that he was never condescending to non-math majors. Even though he's not easy, I would highly recommend him for anyone who is shaky in math.
Best math insructor I've ever had. Hands out keys to every quiz and test where he has worked out all the problems so you can see how it should have been done. Always willing to help and isn't arrogant. This class was very difficult for me, but I got an A.
If you want a teacher with the ability to make the subject matter comprehensible and even enjoyable then register for Brian's section. Don't expect "easy". Do expect to learn.
Always willing to talk to students and makes it a priority that students learn instead of just "covering the material".
Simply the best...
Great stuff gives examples and knows what he's doning. One of the best teachers I've had so far.
As someone else has already said, he's the best math teacher I've ever had. Keep up the good work!
Easy class if you keep up. I barely tried and got really behind and got a C. He's willing to help and offers a lot of extra credit. I'd highly recommend him.
Gives very structured notes. More than willing to help you understand the concepts if you're confused. Super nice :)
He is a nice guy but a little confusing at times. Homework is not collected but you should do it because it will really help on quizes and tests. Sometimes he is not very clear and you have to ask.
Without a doubt one of the best professors at IUPUI in any subject. In math he is rivaled only by Chris Mitchell in the clarity of his presentation.
The best math prof, I've had. Knows the material well, very helpful. Lots of extra credit, which is very nice. Let's face it math is boring, but this guy shows you the application of the concepts which helps.
One of the best Math teachers at IUPUI. Took him in the Summer. Would higly recommend
Used practical real world applications to conic sections.
Helpful, Intelligent, Kind, Patient
Very funny, kind person. The best math teacher I have ever had for sure. He def. knows what he's talking about
Amazing. Only problem was he was a bit slow and handing back tests. But he gives amazing extra credit.
Gives out tons of extra credit. Wants every student to pass
I would not reccomend taking Brian's classes online unless you just happen to be a math whiz from the start! He will kick your behind! He's very approachable and funny and open to helping students; very knowledgeable but his tests are extremely difficult.
He is the best. He teaches slow enough for everyone to understand the material. Gives out tons of extra credit. His test are very reasonable.
Awesome, awesome prof.!! Take him if you can! He will do everything he can to help you and make sure you understand the material! Make sure to keep up, though, because he doesn't spoonfeed the material to you.
Bryan is one of the 2 most effective and competent postsecondary math profs I have ever had. He also accommodated me being in the ER during the final by giving me an I and letting me make it up when I was better. When I did study for the makeup final, he devoted 5 HOURS of his time to giving me INDIVIDUAL attention to help me study. I got an A+.
Bryan Melsheimer is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He teaches at a slow pace so every one can understand. He devotes his time and energy to his students. I hope to get him next year so much! His test are over the material covered in class and notes. Finally asigns homework problems which are exactly like the problems on his test.
Bryan is extremely fair in his grading and course practices. I took his class online, and even though I did not see him on a regular basis, he was extremely helpful in returning emails and answering questions. He is very personable as well. I sometimes find math profs to be a bit intimidating, but he is really a nice guy and brilliant professor!
A very nice teacher. Makes the course enjoyable and gives a lot of extra credits. I recommend him.
He is a great teacher. Instead of blindly teaching how math problems are done, he explains how the problems are solved, and why he solved them the way he did. He is always answers questions thoroughly and doesn't think any questions are stupid. In addition to solving math problems, he often mentions real world situations.
His commitment to his students is obvious. He goes above and beyond to make sure students in his class have everything the need to succeed.
Without question the best professor I have ever had. He knows everything about this subject and presents it in a manner that makes perfect sense. You have every opportunity to succeed in his classes. He would always make extra time to help students that needed it. I would recommend this prof to anyone.
This was the best math professor that I have had and I have been attending IUPUI for 2.5 years. He was clear in his explanations of techniques to solve problems and made it clear that he was here to help not hinder your success. I would highly recommend this professor!
Extremely nice guy, seems to want to help a lot. Unfortunately he's a master of the "Magic hand" trick where you simply skip several steps on the board to save time and space. This results in you losing track often, and you end up living in the Math lab. Also doesn't give ANY homework, so if you're bad at tests, you're completely done for.
He is a nice guy and is willing to help, but it is not the right class for some people. If you don't like to write notes by hand, do not take this class, I recommend Chris Dona because he actually gives you handouts of the notes. Also, I've noticed Melsheimer barely does practice problems during lecture, where Dona does multiple problems in class.
He is amazing. As long as you go to class you should be fine. I attended every class and never had to open my book. Highly recommend this professor in any course he teaches.
He is a good guy. Gives too many extra credit and his quizzed and tests are quit easy and from the notes. Best Professor Ever!!
He is the best teacher for for ever.
too fast & confusing.
Very good professor. Explained materials clearly. I do recommend. Tests are somewhat harder than the examples given in lecture, but you can make up the points with extra credit and other assignments.
This man is a hero without a cape. The extra credit he gives (which is a lot, let me tell you) is a game changer and a life saver. I went from a F to a C because of it. Yeah he teaches fast, but he's more than willing to help during or after class. He literally lays out everything for you. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TAKE HIS CLASSES WHEN EVER YOU CAN.
I took Mr. Melsheimer for math 153 and 154. Personally, I am terrible at math but I was able to get a B+ in 153 and a B in 154. Alot of it has to do because of the extra credit he gives. He is a very reasonable and understanding person. You need to attend class or else you run a serious risk of not passing unless you get major help from outside.
Very Good teacher, has the online hw that takes forever. Would take my whole time at iupui if taught higher levels
Very large class makes for little participation. Teaching is not very specific.
Took this class bc of the extra credit talk, but it's really nothing special. No clear process to his grading, just circles everything and marks it wrong. If you don't complete a problem the exact way he wants it, it's wrong. Passed 153 with flying colors and struggled immensely with this class bc of his teaching style.
This guy was great. He answered questions clearly and really did a great job. I found the material and class challenging, but if you do the homework he gives you, and stay on top of things, you will do well in his class.
Great instructor! So much extra credit!
Very good teacher. Lectures consist of example problems and is usually very clear. If you take good notes, you will be able to get through 90% of problems pretty easily. Office hours are convenient. Willing to meet you outside of office hours if need be. Stay on top of the suggested problems or you will get swamped.
The single best math professor I have ever had... Lots of extra credit. Excellent teaching method...
I love Bryan, he is the best math professor I have ever had. If it weren't for him, I probably wouldn't have passed 153. I highly recommend him if you have trouble understanding math because he has a fantastic teaching method and always has time for questions. He also gives out a lot of extra credit which saved my semester grade.
Great teacher. He's willing to meet with you outside of office hours, one person in my class said he would stay up on the phone with her to help her understand the material. He relates the material to situations where you could use it and explains some of the history behind the math. The large amount of extra credit makes it much easier to pass.
A great professor. He explains things in class extremely well, and gives out lots of extra credit. Very friendly as well. Great lectures.
The guy is a rock star. Tries (and manages) to keep math interesting by inserting little snippets of historical facts about subject matter. Explains concepts well, and doesn't rush through material if students have trouble following. Very approachable if extra help is needed. Participate, work your extra credit assignments, and you'll do fine.
His tests and quizzes are somewhat hard, some times very hard. But when it comes to the final it's so easy. He gives a lot of extra credit which is a lifesaver. I got and A though my highest test score was 78.
Really Good Instructor in my opinion
His teaching style is horrible. He hardly explains anything just does the problem and say that is how it is done. Always gives extra credit on tests and quizzes. Tells random history facts. Wouldn't recommend him for calculus.
No required homework but i would not suggest taking 231 with him to anyone. He writes the material on the board and is very bad at explaining things. If you didnt take precalculus and trig at IUPUI, good luck
Best math professor for people who have difficulty understanding math. He is a super understanding person!
Bryan really wants you to succeed, he gives you all the tools you need to be successful. This class is hard work so you have to be willing to complete the ungraded homework, prepare for exams and quizzes, and show up to class to take notes. He gives tons of extra credit opportunities and is a super nice guy. If you have to take calculus take him!
Math has never been my strong subject, and my first time taking calculus (EVER) was with Mr. Melshiemer, and he is wonderful. He is so patient, gives tons of extra credit, and is great for students who struggle in math. That being said, its still calc and its a hard subject, but he helped make it tolerable.
Bryan is one of the best Math 15300 processor in the math department. Expect 4 exams and 8 quizzes. Those are your only grade, homework is optional BUT DO THEM ANYWAYS. His extra credit is what will save your grade, and he gives a lot of them. If you want to pass, you will have to put 3 hours at least of work outside every class session.
Bryan was a solid choice for this class. Math is not my strong suit, but he makes it so you can pass easily with an A or B if you try hard enough. He gives loads of extra credit, do all of it, this will save your grade. Just do the assigned textbook homework and you will be fine.
Bryan is a great math professor. Math is not my strongest suit but he makes sure to fully explain course material and to answer as many questions as he can. He also replies t emails quickly (which is very helpful). He also gives a decent amount of extra credit throughout the course of the semester (which does can help boost your final grade).
Bryan is a really good math teacher. Make sure you get A's on the first two tests because the last two are really hard. The quizzes are fairly easy. Make sure you do the extra credit sheets all that extra credit really bumps up your grade. I had a C and with extra credit points, I got to a B+. This is the best college math teacher you can get.
I really struggled with performance and test anxiety during this class, so I can't give a fair rating for the content of the class with regard to its difficulty. Brian noticed I was struggling and made a point to give me resources and to check in with me in a way that wasn't invasive. He helped lighten the mood with non-math questions on quizzes.
If you reach out to him he does his best to help you and does a good job explaining out things on the board. I would NOT recommend this professor if you have a hard time with tests! The class is all based on tests and quizzes with no homework. The tests are like trick questions and are much harder than what he does on the board!
Mr. Melsheimer is a very good math teacher. I have had him for 15300 and 15400 and I have learned the material well. The only thing that I might change in his course is that the only thing that goes in the grade book is tests and quizzes and a little bit of extra credit, no homework so you need to make sure you can do good on the quizzes and test.
Had him for 153/154, explains material well, but tests are ultra-heavy, if you plan to be mathematician then definitely take him, if you here for credit then avoid. Because he wants you to be pro in math, but not all people able to do that. Be ready to prepare a lot for tests (4-1 lowest) and quizzes (8-2 lowest).
Trig is an awful class if u dont like math. This professor was much nicer than another trig professor I had. He really worked with me to help me do the best I could. Most of the math professors you can tell are just not good teachers, they all know how to do math they just do not know how to teach it. But this professor was kind and tried his best
Bryan is great. Math isnt my strongest subject so this class was difficult for me, but by going to his office hours I was able to understand the material much more. I definitely recommend taking this course with Bryan. He is understandable, answers any & all questions, and is kind. Do all the homework even though its not taken for a grade!!
I have taken 2 math classes with Professor Melsheimer, and let me say I will counite take classes with him if possible. Your grade is based on the quizzes and exams. His exams and quizzes are based on the examples he gives in class and the suggested homework in the sylbes. Just always study and make sure you solve the homework.
pretty good guy once you get to know him. Very open for students to ask questions either about the content literally or about other deeper meanings in the math we are doing.
This professor is very kind and helpful. I loved taking his course and intentionally scheduled to have him for the next semester too. He recommends coming to every class and doing the homework assignments, but does not require it. Gives plentiful opportunities for extra credit and is always willing to explain the material. Very easy to understand.
He was amazing! Whenever I had a question about what I did wrong he always helped me figure it out after class.
I had him for college algebra, and he was just as helpful for trigonometry. Personally, I find trigonometry more challenging than algebra. But Bryan made things understandable and he really wants to see his students succeed. Great guy.
Prof. Melsheimer's lectures were helpful, but don't rely solely on them. Expect extensive studying outside of class. He doesn't collect homework but you should try to do as much of the homework as possible as it will help a ton. Exams/quizzes cover various problems, so review each section thoroughly and ALWAYS attempt EC questions, even if unsure.
Bryan was a good teacher. It was very interesting how he explained the background of a topic and how it came to be. There is no homework but it is highly suggested, because he sometimes pulls questions from the textbook and uses them on tests and quizzes. He does not record or post notes, so attendance is key to passing.
No homework, and grade is based completely off quizzes and exams for which there is no study guide. I find math incredibly difficult, and while he did his best to explain concepts, I wish he provided better study resources and offered more opportunities to gain points. Very nice guy, will be a rough class if you suck at math.
I would HEAVILY recommend going to his office hours. I utilized those quite a lot. Also do all the extra credit! It improved my grade by 6.25 percent.
This professor was a nice person but his teaching style is not for me. The exams and what he taught were very different. He offers a lot of extra credit which is why i did well but other than that it was horrible. I would take trig w another person.
He is one of my favorite math professors that I have ever had.
He is very old school and did not assign homework for a grade. His teaching style was not for me I ended up withdrawing from his class. He would go over problems in class that would NEVER show up on the quizzes or tests. I never knew what to study for. If you struggle with math he may not be your guy.
His extra credit is a lifesaver and can really move your grade up. The content is hard but you will do fine if you put in effort. The homework is needed to succeed even if not required.
Decent prof. Definitely heavy on the quizzes and exams. Gave a lot of extra credit. I wish there was study guides or mandatory homework, since it is a difficult class especially for someone who doesn't excel at math. Was always available, let me take an exam early, but he showed up late to the time I was supposed to take it. Reminders help him out.
He was the best professor that I have ever had. His quizzes and exams were so fair. His teaching style is phenomenal, and honestly, I am not sure if there are enough words to describe his kindness. He is inspirational and always tries to help his students. I strongly suggest taking math with him and I personally respect him so much.
This prof doesnt teach he skims over problems on the board and you figure out the rest when you go home. no homework. no study guides. no guiding for what to study. half the time you want even know what your doing and when you finally do know what your doing it doesnt appear on test or quizzes worst math prof ever
