He's a great teacher. If you don't understand it he will go over it with you again. Let's you rewrite papers if you don't get an A on them. Very easy. Very nice. Wish I could take him for all of my classes.
Great professor. He's very helpful and goes the extra mile to help you. I wish he taught Comp II. His methods of teaching are great!!
this professor is horrible. he makes hateful comments to his students and is not very clear when he teaches. he always puts down students who seem like a threat to his intelligence
Bryan Rivers knows the English language well. He is encouraging, caring, and available to anyone that desires help. In his class, we were given opportunities to redo our papers if we were not successful the first time. I learned many new writing skills. He was compassionate and gave us an endearing farewell speech before our final exam.
Very good teacher. Plan to take comp 2 with him.
Bryan Rivers is great teacher! He is extremely helpful and funny! You can learn alot by paying attention to what he has to say. Prof Rivers will accept late papers if you let him know what's going on. He also sings and palys the guitar at Abuelo's on friday nights. His paper topics are fun to write about. One of the better Prof's to take!
I took Professor Rivers for comp 1 and comp 2. Love the way he teaches. I do have to say that it was not an easy class for me since English is my second language. You will pass if you study, pay attention and turn in your assignments on time.
GREAT professor! I would definitely take him again for Comp 2. He knows the English language very well and is able to answer ALL of my many questions. He is very lenient, but isn't a total pushover. Try not to be late though. He resents that. Also, You don't NEED to buy the text books, just use the ones in the library.
Professor Rivers is a fantastic teacher who knows the material he is teaching. He is helpful, has a sense of humor, and is able to integrate his humor into his lectures to help students learn. He is lenient on some things, but he isn't extremely easy and you will learn something coming out of his class. Take this teacher above any other for Engli
Professor Rivers is a critical thinking, compassionate, and funny. He likes to be funny, and brings his guitar in once or twice. His class begins with "Let's get started" and tries to affirm that the students comprehend the previous lesson. -- Stephen Kilpatrick Fall 2009 Student
I took this class in spring of '09. Having been out of school for almost 10 years I was nervous, but mr. rivers is a great teacher. He teased me for saying "like" a lot, but he was very helpful and i thought nice. I ended up getting a 4.0 in his class. You will have to study, but he is a fair and easy going teacher.
Keeps students interest on the subject.
Did not like him at all. I thought he was really unfair and really boring. I did not really learn anything. I would not recommend him.
Great Professor! Fair and honest about your work.
Rivers is a fair grader, easy going, relaxed professor. I would take him again. I missed a lot of class due to medical reasons, and he never once penalized me for it. Take notes, do the work he hands out, and the rest is downhill. Great for those coming back to school from a long break.
One of my favorite professors this semester! He is willing to help, nice, and very relaxed. The tests are fairly easy.
He is the best english teacher! i totally recommend him!!!!!!!
Even though he gets side tracked and doesnt go by the sybullas sometimes, I would say take his class. His test are not the easiest but not the hardest either.DO NOT be late! He is slow to respond to emails, but he will respond.I wish he was teaching Lit because I would take his class. He may appear like he doesnt care, he does. Just ask for help :)
Mr. Rivers is a great teacher. Take notes & do all handouts & you should be fine. Tests aren't too hard as long as you go over your notes. He has a sense of humor & will always help you if you need it. He brings his guitar & sings to the class at least once. Follow ALL rules & guidelines he gives you for papers(how many pages, words, works cited..)
Professor Rivers is an excellent teacher. He goes over everything for writing assignments as well as tests and will stay after class to help you. Just don't miss a class, do all the homework assignments and ask questions if you don't understand something. He's a very fair and understanding teacher. Will definitely take him again.
He grades hard, not a good teacher to take for a regular class. He laughs at the most random things, he is forever making jokes in references to drugs and dark allies in Polk County, he speaks bad about Polk County language. Hes boring. He lags on and on. Good only for advanced classes. Miss one class you miss everything. N has favorites.
i really dont understand nothing!
Easy class but if you coming straight out of high school its all very redundant& he goes over & over the same things. He's very boring. Tests aren't that bad. You write a few papers & he greades those pretty tough. Im a weak writer & hate english but im doing fine. I would recommend him not really because he is a good teacher but because its easy
I dropped his class because he was so boring and monotone. I dont know if it was just me but he always came of condescending to most of the students. This was a lower level English and it always felt like he was superior to us. Also never be late or miss because he keeps notice and he will mark your grade for it. He was always late.
He is a great teacher! He explains everything is his lectures very clearly and makes sure it's understood by his students. To get an A in this class you just have to pay attention in class, do all of the assignments, and attend class every day. I recommend people to take this class!
Don't buy the books! You rarely ever use them and when you do you can work with someone else!
This class was very easy just make sure you show up for class and do the assignments. You hardly use the textbooks.
Excellent teacher! He expects you to do your work, and will give the grade you deserve. He helps you learn from mistakes and will meet with you after class or at his office if you need extra help. He does take attendance, but is realistic about life and circumstances that arise. If you are a student who is at college to truly learn, take him.
He is an okay professor. He grades the papers subjectively so it is impossible to get a 95 on any papers.
I would highly recommend Professor Rivers as a teacher. I wish he taught ENC 1102 at night because I would definitely take him again. He is very fair in grading your work. And loves classroom participation. He does require you to come to class and do your assignments. I loved this class!
Excellent teacher! He expects you to do your work. He is fair, and he cares about all of his students. He helps you learn from your mistakes; he will meet with you after class or at his office if you need extra help. Please arrive to class on time. Take notes, listen carefully, and you will receive an A. I enjoyed his grammar lectures too!!!!!
This guy does not care about anything except grammar. Be prepared to spend 1hr going over an assignment that takes 5 min to complete. If you're not good at grammar, take somebody else.
Best professor ever! He expects you to do your work and participate in discussions, as long as you do that you'll be fine in his class. Makes class interesting and fun. Highly recommended!
He grade's hard on Grammar. You use your textbooks so buy both on them. Make sure you do all of the homework, he does not collect the assignements, but he does go over them in class. I had him as a afternoon class, our class was very fun. Doing the debates in class what the most fun I had during his class. Testing does count make sure you study.
I took Professor Rivers for both Comp 1 and 2. A lot of what we covered in Comp 1 is repeated in Comp 2. I would highly recommend him! Make sure you do the grammar homework because you will be tested on it periodically throughout the semester. He grades fairly and makes class fun and enjoyable!
awesome teacher! funny and open-minded. has a lot of patience. English is boring but he makes it fun to come to class. Easy A if you just follow the format guidelines for the research paper. He means what he says by not taking late papers!some people thought he was joking and paid the price by failing the class
If you want to be successful in college, I would suggest taking Rivers. Though you may not enjoy some of the grammar, he will help you learn what you need to know in order to write A papers. Most college classes require a paper and I have done well since taking him. His class is a good investment.
Professor Rivers was an awesome teacher. I had him for my composition 1 night class and he honestly made everything way more entertaining and understandable. He adds a lot of culture and awesome stories to the class and even brought in his guitar occasionally to add variety to the class. I highly recommend him and anyone would have a blast.
Professor Rivers is a very funny, and fun person. He made everything make sense and was very accepting of outside problems that I had had with completing work, but I wouldn't say that he would give me credit where credit wasn't due, but he was understanding. I would definitely recommend his classs.
Loved professor Rivers. I hated English until I took him and realized it wasen't that bad. Will take him for Enc1102
DO NOT take him. He spent the majority of the class singing songs on his guitar and talking about the election. He is NOT clear on paper topics or assignments I ended up taking this same course with another teacher and learned more in the first day then the whole time with him.
Very fair and helpful. Not easy if you don't show up and put in the effort, but he's willing to work with you on any problems you may have. He wants you to succeed and you can tell he really likes teaching English. Would definitely recommend his class.
Professor Rivers is great. I'm not going to say his class is super easy. You have to work for your grades, but if you come to class and pay attention, there's isn't any reason you shouldn't pass. We only had 3 tests in this class including the final. We had one research paper and you chose your topic. He does debates, which I thought were fun.
Professor Rivers was probably the worst teacher I've had. He was strict about students being on time and doing their work, but at the same time he always got off subject during every class. He mostly rambled on about politics, he treated us like we were just dumb college students, and I learned nothing about English.
Does not give clear instruction. Depends on structured scheduling of oneself to understand assignments. Grades very heavily on grammar. Will explain if you make the time for him. One can never study material for tests because Professor Rivers does not follow any pattern for the textbooks. Will not take his course for Comp. II.
I lost interest very quickly in his class. The assignments were very to the point and he is all about grammar. He is kind of harsh on grading with grammar.
Do not take his class. He doesn't give you clear instructions. One can never study for test. Because he doesn't follow anything from the textbook. He is all about grammar. He will explain if you stay after class .I didn't learn anything from him. Plays guitar in class. Talks about politics all the time. It's like I wasted my time.
I truly enjoyed my College Comp. I class with Professor Rivers, he is very witty and makes learning fun. He is a grammar guru and wants his students to succeed and write professionally. He is a little tough when grading, but if you pay attention and make an effort you will pass his class. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
This is a professor who knows how to handle a classroom. Allows discussion but keeps people on topic, allows students to interject opinions, makes learning pleasant. I wish Rivers was every professor. If he was, I would go to college forever. Take him whenever possible. Papers required, but he always looks at them before submission for feedback.
Professor Rivers was a really good teacher. His class was fast paced, but that was because I took him in the 6-week summer class. Overall, his class was not difficult if you took notes and payed attention. He takes time to answer questions the best way he can, and he explains concepts pretty well. If he taught another class, I'd take him.
The papers are definitely manageable. Lectures on rhetoric were really informative and can serve someone well in the real world. Get to practice some of this learned material in a debate at the end of the semester. These were welcome changes of pace from the monotony of other English classes.
Good teacher, tough grader. Gives 2 essays, and other writing assignments.
Tough grader! Syllabus is a joke! Most professors give details on research paper at the beginning of the term, not this guy. Probably about 3 weeks to work on research paper on top of essays and homework.
Professor Rivers was a great professor! he made sure the entire class was understanding the material. He is very lenient on grading papers. He doesn't grade homework. Only had two very easy tests for the class. He is very helpful and can make class enjoyable. I had him for English Comp 1 and will be taking his class again for English Comp 2.
The professor was not too bad but the overall process of this course was aweful.
If you're looking for an average comp class then I would stay away from this professor. Didn't really learn much about english at all, it was more about the rhetorical triangle and debates than anything. The beginning of the semester he was really laid back then he got super picky about grading right at the end.
I loved his class. He was a fair grader. He was very lenient and never graded homework. I enjoyed the lectures and used a lot of what he taught to enhance my everyday communication skills. I wish every professor was like him!!!
Explains things
Good teacher
I loved him. He's a great prof and if you don't understand something , he will automaticaally come an help you out. He's hilarious and sometimes he will make up really stupid sayings for us to correct so we will actually pay attention. WOULD TAKE AGAIN!!!
I have never done well in English, but this english class was amazing. I dropped enc1102 last semester with Rebecca Hientz. I really enjoyed his lectures. He made learning fun and most importantly he made mastering english achievable. He is very helpful. All english professors should take some notes from him.
Professor Rivers Know His Stuff. However, he is a harsh grader. He gives you work during the weekend so you can practice your grammar skills. He expects you to learn from a week. He gives you four essays and you have only an opportunity to rewrite the first one . I do not like that personally. I believe you should be able to fix your mistakes .
Professor Rivers is quite engaging in his lectures. His lectures contain material that can be used in the real word not just to pass class. On essays, you get what your work for and the debate group project at the end of the semester is cruciall. Make sure you are knowledgeable about your topic bc questions will be asked. Would take him again.
He keeps the class moving and time goes by quickly. The debates are informative and fun. The topics were great no matter which one you picked.
Definitely the most down-to-earth professor I've had. Mr. Rivers has an enthusiasm for learning that keeps the whole class engaged. If you take the FT summer course, be prepared to write a 3-page paper nearly once a week. At the end of the semester, the class will get in debate groups and teams - research is required, but it's as fun as you make it
Too Political, uses the classroom for a soapbox to preach "libtard" views. Insulting to every student who longs for a standard in learning.
Have not had a problem with the difficulty of work assigned but more with the professor and curriculum. Every day starts with the topic as scheduled, then ends with a rambling or political lecture. Leaves you wondering what he was talking about in the first place. This class is irrelevant and should somehow be tied into ENC 1101.
Professor Rivers is a very political teacher. our class would start out talkin about commas and periods and would someway, somehow end up on a political topic. . I would not suggest taking him if you are looking for a class that will teach you something or for a professor that grades you properly and not on opinions and viewpoints.
Although he can ramble a bit, he is a great professor that will keep you intrigued. Will definitely be taking him for ENC1102 as well.
I have done all the writings and i ended the class with a D because I didn't do the papers the way that he wanted when everyone I took it to to proof read them said it was fine. My friend warned me after the drop date that he was a bad professor.
Be prepared to learn and work for your grade, if not, then don't take the class. The professor knows his material. The first day of class he will explain the syllabus and what to expect. No personal politic talk as I read in the rates, however, there are class debates which might involve politics (facts only). Overall phenomenal teacher.
I took him for Comp I & II. Listen to what he wants specifically and used your books for resources. He is usually available to help outside of class as well with questions and help. He provides funny stories to help you learn and remember. Overall, I thought he was great! Pay attention, do your work, and you will do good.
Professor Rivers is great. If you follow the criteria for his papers you'll definitely pass. He gives sylbi for each paper you do.
Though Professor Rivers grades tough, he does help you to do better and if you do your work and come to class you will pass.
He seemed like an alright professor at the beginning of the semester. Sometimes would randomly sing and bring out his guitar, but I did good on the first few essays and it seemed like as the semester progressed he started marking me off for trivial things he hadn't before. Terrible grader, and overall annoying human being. Take a different prof....
Rivers is unpredictable as heck when it comes to grading. He is very strict about certain things, but much more giving in other ways. He does not give clear instructions. He is incredibly picky. He is unorganized as heck, too.
Very fair.
He is a bit of a slow grader. He also doesn't explain the homework well either, and when asked, his answers aren't exactly clear.
I took Professor Rivers last semester and he was a great teacher. There will be many tests but he prepares you for them. He tells you what to study in order to pass the test. If you show up and do your work you will be fine. He is a tough grader on essays but will take the time to explain what you did wrong and how you could fix it.
Prof Rivers cares about his students, as long as your active and show that you care hell work with you. Took him for comp 1 and 2 had trouble with both of my research papers and he made sure to help me get it right
Really great Professor, he cares that his class participates and does well. Wish I would have had the chance to take this class in person. Weekly online meetings required. Homework is not graded, just discussed in class. The majority of your grade will be from essays. Most essay assignments were short, only one longer research paper was required.
Overall a good, friendly Professor. Responds & grades quickly. He explains the subjects & topics well. Homework is easy, isnt graded but required for class discussions. Has a few essays but easy topics. Grades kinda hard but reasonable. No extra credit. Very caring of his students & always encourages them.
YEA NO..
First off he is hard to understand when he is teaching, he didn't like me from the beginning even though I did nothing to him. A lot of unnecessary essays. He gets lost on his words sometimes. He can be disrespectful at times, you can never find him outside of class so if you need anything you need to wait after class.
I would never take this professor again. I advise you not to either. He grades as if you're supposed to be the best writer in the world, he does not give clear instructions on how to do any assignments and he just expects you to read his mind. He goes off on tangents when speaking and you are confused all of the time. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Very tough grader with very few assignments. Will ramble in class about topics that aren't very present in the work that is assigned. Attendance is mandatory, will lose a full letter grade if 3 classes are missed. All assignments in the grade book are essays.
While he's a good professor, I wouldn't take him again. He does care how you do in class but is very harsh with his grading. Only take Rivers if you have a bit of time to devote to English.
Professor Rivers encourages discussion. He always wants a few students to talk back and have some fun. It turns his lectures into something more akin to friendly debates. Lots of homework. If an essay requires sources, lots of time is given to perfect it. Every assigned topic is open-ended, allowing for limitless interpretation and freedom.
Professor Rivers is an amazing professor, he is a little tough on the grading, has no clear rubric, and does not have many assignments to grade, but you can go to him during his office hours or writing studio to find what you need to fix. He is a challenging professor, just keep on track, and ask for help. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself!
