He speaks terrible english, as in do what you done in #4 was directions on the test. Speaks very slowly and takes all of class time no matter what. Generally nice but not a very good teacher.
Skips important steps in problem solving, expects you to read the book word for word. Even worse are the hideous hawaiian shirts he wears EVERY day. I swear, the guy owns one for every day of the week and never mixes it up...
Drop quickly.
you all have no sense of humor. He is a great guy. Oh my!! You have to read the book, you would think you were in college or something.
WORST TEACHER EVER! NOT HELPFUL AND VERY LAZY. KIDS RUN THE CLASS NOT HIM. DROP QUICKLY.

Very helpful when you ask questions during office hours. Goes the extra mile to help, you just have to ask for it. Failed him first time because I quit going to class because I was so lost and did not want to ask questions. He really does care if we learn it or not as long as we care. Oh yeah, you better read the book word for word, to get an A
Difficult class, but I learned a lot. You need to ask questions, do the homework, and go to class to do well in this class.
He is probably the best math teacher I've ever had. He makes things very clear for me and I'm making an A for the first time in math because of him. If people would actually do the homework and listen, they'd pass easily.
He sometimes makes the class feel stupid, but all in all he's a wonderful teacher. He WILL help you... just don't expect not to go in that and not try. Ask questions and study, you'll do perfectly fine.
I hate this guy, his tests are nothing like he prepares for. he always wears the same damn couple of t-shirts
He's a good teacher who knows what he's talking about, but make sure that you do the homework and come to class everyday because he does give pop quizzes off the homework and will not let you make it up.
Goes too fast
Terrible! He has a way of making the students feel small and he doesn't present the material in a way that is easy to understand. DO NOT take this class! But if you do, he does base a lot of his pop quizzes on the homework, so do the homework and go to class.
He lives up to his name.. u have to learn everything your SELF!
He is an amazing teacher!! He is a very helpful teacher. He pushes you hard, because he wants you to succeed! I would say take his class if you want to learn and are willing to work hard!
He is definitely the worst teacher I've ever had. I had an A in AP Calculus in high school and right now I'm failing his class. I've never failed a class before. Do not take this guy if there is any way possible not to. Do it for your own good, especially if you want your GPA to survive!
bad teacher and very hard
very helpfull and really rewards those who work hard, knows what he is doing and easy to learn from
How come all the people who claim to make an A in AP calculus in high school place into an applied calculus class? Wouldn't you test out of the requirement and at least pass the class? SHows you have no credibility. Self is a great teacher and very helpful!!
He's not the worst but he is not the best by far! He is not good at answering questions because he makes you feel stupid. If you have time I would try to get out of there.
He is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He is very full of himself which is reflected in his teaching, b/c he thinks he knows everything when in actuality nobody can understand him. Do yourself and your grade a favor and do not get him!
Willing to show examples, but usually makes you wait until after class on your own time
Horrible teacher..more into himself than his class...Super Cocky....is confusing... he helps you outside of class, buti would strongly recomend taking someone else
His lecture notes look like a kindergartner wrote them.
good, straightforward teacher. do all your homework and if you understand what you are doing, you will get at least a B. gives easy open-book pop quizzes every week or so and drops 2-4 lowest quiz grades.
Bryan is a great teacher, but he's not going to throw out A's; you have to earn them. You have to be in class and you have to do your homework or you'll be screwed. If you want an easy A, this isn't the class for you. If you want a solid understanding of calculus concepts, take his class.
Hated it!
this should be an easy class but brian goes out of his way to make it hard. He is not a good teacher, his class average is doing good if it makes it to up 65 on exams... plus he is rude, condescending and hard to get good help from. Anybody would be better.
Very helpful, considerate teacher. If you honestly care about your work, he goes out of his way to be available to help.
Horrible teacher. He loves nothing more than to embarrass you for asking a question. He thinks the world of himself and nothing of anything else. He will constantly tell you to refer to his notes online which are just scanned in copies of chicken scratch that a kindergardener could have done better- half of it is done in crayon!
Great teacher. Really explains material well.
Chad is a horrible teacher. The test average this semester was in the 60's. Do not take from him if you can help it. He has a terrible ego problem. He can be nice and approachable one day and be the biggest jerk the next. His tests are extremely hard and he goes out of his way to make the final include questions that everyone missed on the exams!
Bryan Self is kind of a tool bag. He most likely suffers from some sort of bi-polar disorder and is very unpredictable. He uses "hell" and "damn" quite often, and tries to make students feel unintelligent for asking questions. Also, he has nasty sweaty pit-stains when its hot.
This class is no fun. A ton of homework which is a must do because he gives retarded 'surprise' homework checks that he grades pretty strictly (he likes them done how he does them). Tests are extremely difficult and he gives very little margin for error (loves to give you minimal points). Half of my class NCed half way through the semster...
Overall the class is harder than previous math classes I have had at UT. He gives homework pop quizzes so you have to do your homework to pass them. I thought the tests were easier than the announced quizzes. You will do better if you go to class everyday and take notes. The homework can be annoying but it helps on the tests.
Gave a ton of homework and then pop homework quizzes but if did homework would usually get a good grade. Test were very very hard. Go to his office hours because he will help. He really helped me prepare for the final and I got an A on it where I failed all his tests.
Self has good intentions, but ruins them by making tests extremely difficult. Even for students that have previously taken cal, it was extremely hard in his class. I would recommend another professor if at all possible! It doesn't start off bad, but just wait.
He is a good teacher. I didn't apply myself in class, so I failed. A lot of people don't like him, but I thought he was always willing to help. Just don't take pre-cal.
Although his attitude stinks horribly, Mr. self is a decent teacher. If you are struggling in class office hours helps alot. My advice is to do all the homework problems. If you hsve a question ask him after class or in office hours because he makes people feel bad for not knowing the material.
he is a great teacher. he wants everyone in his class to pass and makes it clear at the beginning of the year what each student should do to pass...he says he does not care about attendance but it is mandatory and rightfully so...he always teaches to the last minute of class and i never felt like i was wasting my time. I got an A in the class!
He is more than willing to work with you. Helpfull HINT go to his office hours in the beginning of the semester. Then at the end he will basicaly give you the grade.
I really like Mr. Self. He fully explained all of my questions that I had and seems very willing to help you pass his class. I like him. not a whole lot of homework, i did more homework in high school, actually.
A very hard, but good teacher. Really listens to students and is very good about answering questions and very patient. This will not be an easy A, but I am glad I have a teacher like Prof. Self to prepare me for advanced maths.
Easy teacher as long as you aren't a complete idiot. If you actually came to college to learn then you will have no problem.
He's very nice and very helpful. If you have trouble with anything see him during his office hours. He'll teach you until you get it. The book for the course isn't very good at explaining things but do your homework and ask questions in class and you'll do fine.
Self is an outstanding professor. He explains everything step-by-step. He is also readily available to answer your emails.
Self is great! Even though he says going to class is not manatory....GO! It really helps, and make sure you do your homework!!! If you keep up with the homework, and do the practice tests online the exams are fairly easy. Ask questions if you have them, good with emails and office hours.
130 is completely pointless. it does not count towards any major so just don't take it and instead of wasting your time in his class, take 141 and work harder. it was a semester wasted and i didn't learn anything i couldn't have gone without. he's a really nice guy. pretty cool. but not a good teacher. what he teaches is different than his tests.
Probably one of the best math teachers I've EVER had. Explains stuff really well so that you'll understand even if you're not good at math. Go to his office hours & make and effort. If you don't like you're grade & our making an effort tell him & he'll take care of you when it comes times to give out grades.
++ instructor. Doesnt mind to put in the extra work after class to help u. U just need to find him during his office hours. If you are having trouble, he will help as best he can, while still teaching you. Will not baby you, but will help you. If math isn't your strong suit though, may need to pick another professor. not always clear when teaching.
Pretty good teacher, usually goes over things exactly as they will be on the test. Will help you extra if you need extra help. If you go to class and do homework you should be fine
LOVED HIM! I took him my first semester and three semesters later he is still my favorite. there is a lot of homework but, it is all relevant!
Very good teacher. Always helpful when you need it. Does have hard tests but grades fairly. Go to class and do the homework and you should be fine. Definitely would take again.
He is amazing! The best math teacher I have ever had. As long as you do the work expected and show that you are trying he is happy to go out of his way to make sure you understand! Would def. recommend him!
He is a great professor! Very Helpful! Unless you use the textbook for extra practice, there's no need in purchasing one. He is pretty laid back with attendence but make sure u do the homework. He gives pop quizzes fairly often and you cannot make up the credit unless you attend class. Make sure you do your web assign b/c it really helps your grade
He is a really cool, laid back guy. He does not allow the use of calculators, which I thought would be a bad thing at first, but I actually understand math better because of this. If you do the homework, you should be fine. Also, he gives frequent pop quizzes.
Avoid taking a class with him at all costs. Half of my class had taken calculus prior to taking his class, and yet over half of the class failed. He will tell you exactly what is on the test, and then end up putting nothing of what he told you on it. He gave us a test with sections he never taught us. Just horrible. I am very lucky to have passed.
Well, don't listen to the person below me.. He is the only bad review on here. Teacher is great. One review should not scare you. My Grandmother died during the summer session and he really cared. He was so nice about it and was very helpful teaching the stuff I Missed. Genuinely wants us to succeed but will make you better at math. Great guy/teach
He is a good professor. Not the best, but he explains everything pretty well. The online homework is not good at all. I would rather do book work. Overall he is good at what he does.
DO NOT take this professor if you have a heavy work load. He WILL NOT do problems in class when you ask him to. He will just say he "doesn't have time". Assigns TOO much homework (2 webassigns and 1 book per week usually). Doesnt teach enough in class and wants YOU to come to his office hours if you want to learn anything. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bryan really cares about getting to know his students and is my favorite math teacher I've had. I hate math and am terrible at it but got an A- with minimal studying. There's a TON of WebAssign, which is unfortunate, but it will boost your grade. Study guides are very similar to the tests.
Do not take him. Had a great grade until the end of semester. Doesn't go over material for last section very well and it will hurt your grade. Always let's you out late for class. Blames students for when they don't finish tests on time when it's really his fault. Makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. Just don't take him, you will hate it.
Straightforward and happy to help if you're willing to come to office hours. More homework than average but nothing too difficult and it helps a lot to prep for the exams and boost your average. If you can't pass his class, it's most likely due to your laziness.
Mr. Self is a great teacher. If you need help go to his office hours. There is a lot of webassign homework, but it actually can be the easy points for the class. He does give a lot of quizzes but quizzes usually count for only 5% of the grade. 4 tests, not super hard. Sometimes he might bump your grade up to the next letter grade if it is close.
This class was really easy but he's a really weird guy. He likes to pretend like he is the smartest person in the room and seems to enjoy when people are wrong during class. He also yells everything he says.
Bryan was an ok teacher. He has fill-in notes on blackboard that you do in class. Make sure you actually pay attention, because some of the stuff is really tricky.
Bryan is a nice guy, and during the first week of class I thought he was great and wondered why his ratings were pretty low on here. As the course went on, I noticed why. He encourages his students to ask questions but then answers them with more questions and makes us feel embarrassed. we just want a simple answer! The class isn't too hard though.
Awesome dude and awesome teacher. He gets kind of repetitive sometimes, but it's just to get his point across. Makes and posts detailed fill in the blank notes. He always makes himself available to help students when they need. He's stayed after class with me for an hour and a half on two separate occasions because I needed help with homework.
I loved this class because I though the way he set up homework assignments and worksheets was easy, but the material was still a difficult level, but I passed with an A+. I worked for it though. Easy class if you apply yourself and go to his office hours for help... he can sometimes come off as arrogant, but would take him again!
Loved the way lectures were setup.... there were always worksheets and he made time for students to reach out for additional help.... tests are always on material that has been convered!
His class wasn't bad. Tests adhere well to the material. He takes attendance every class. He can make you feel stupid if you ask a question in class sometimes, but he is very willing to help you out of class.
He was a good teacher who's lectures helped a lot. He provided the notes outline online which were helpful. My grade went down after the last exam because it was EXTREMELY HARD. I should've went to office hours. He's a pretty good teacher overall though
Mr. Self was awesome. His tests follow his lecturesnotes very closely. He knows his stuff and even better, he knows how to teach it to you. Would take again!
He lets you print off an outline of his notes. This makes class easy, but it is still necessary to go to class because the material is somewhat hard. The tests are just likes the notes and worksheets. If you want his help, you can go to his office hours. No need for the textbook unless you want extra practice problems.
Okay so Mr. Self can get on your nerves when he gets aggravated but if you try and go to his office hours a couple times before your exams you'll do just fine and web assign can help your grade so try to keep it as high as you can he bumped my grade up a couple points so I could pass also he takes off points for every 6 absences!!
Mr. Self is usually late by 5-10 minutes every day. He teaches problems in a different way than most people have learned, which can be frustrating. You must show work on the exam like he teaches in class. Gives extra credit for doing homework early. He gets frustrated when you ask questions.
He clearly knows his stuff and explains it adequately, however his tests are significantly too long and you cant trust that what he says will be on the test will actually be on the test. He is very willing to help you, but he is very condescending and rude if you don't understand something.
Mr. Self was awesome. Very personable if you talk to him before/outside/after class, but once class started it was business. Always helped me in office hours. It's a hard class, but he's a cool guy.
I'm so thankful I was put into Bryan's class. He can be a smarts but he values student participation in his lecture, & his lectures are slow enough to where you can actually understand what's going on. He often runs over time for class, but you will definitely learn something. Go to his office hours, he is good at explaining things.
Good teacher. He is a little condescending if you don't understand something, but as long as you do the homework and show up to class you will be fine. Also their are random pop quizzes.
You will sit in class & think the material is easy then get to the homework which is very long & it will be very different than what you learned in class. I have taught myself everything I did not previously know. If you ask a question he will ask you to solve it instead of trying to help. He makes you feel dumb if you don't understand a concept.
Notes and examples given in class in no way reflect the problems on tests or on homework. Methods he uses do not match any methods used by other teachers so it is nearly impossible to complete homework when you go to tutoring or get help from students in other classes. Over 8 people in my class have dropped and the rest are failing. DO NOT TAKE HIM
If you go to class and pay attention, his class is an easy A. Those students who have not done well, either have not paid attention or have a bad history with math. He offers extra credit for homework and his tests really aren't hard.
I took him for 119 and 130, he had amazing notes online that you print and use in class, they were so helpful. I am horrible at math and I was able to understand because of his teaching. He is nice, funny, and learns students' names. The only things I disliked were the pop quizzes. I would recommend him, especially if you aren't good at math.
Bryan is not a good professor. His teaching style is backwards from what everyone else does, which makes is hard to seek outside help. He gets very angry in class when students do not understand a concept, but makes no attempt to teach it better/differently. Only thing I liked about this class was being able to print notes. STAY AWAY!!
Tough class, but he wants and respects hard work.
The worst teacher i have ever experienced in 20 years of schooling. Avoid at all costs. Condescending, makes you feel stupid for not understanding, patronizes you in front of everyone, terrible scheduling (wont return quizzes before tests, will assign homeworks the night of the exam). DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GOOD REVIEWS!!!! HE IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE
He seemed a great guy at first and than throughout the semester he became more of an a$$-h0le! HE favorites girls and dislikes it when you seek help in office hours or in class. He seemed like a p3rv3rt and did not care if you were struggling. He starts off saying this will be a ruff class and treats it that way to the end!!
Avoid taking him at all costs, outright ignores question or answers them in a condescending way , if you didn't understand a concept immediately there is no way to learn it from the notes or book by yourself, he deliberately provides homework and practice exams that are as irrelevant to the exam's as possible. Never have seen a teacher less helpful
Spare Yourself The Waste Of A Semester And Take Another 130 Math Teacher. Self is very capable of doing the math, but he is incapable of teaching it effectively. If you like to miss, he doesn't post in-class notes nor does he give good examples to use for the lengthy homeworks. Every class test median was 61 or below needing a 70 to pass, no curve.
Self doesn't really care if you understand the content or not. He knows his content and is super picky about every little detail on his tests. He is terrible at explaining or answering questions. So ask friends in your class before asking him because he will call you out in front of the class for asking a dumb question.
He does not answer questions without a condescending tone. He is very nit-picky on worksheets and tests. The notes do not prepare you for what will be on the homework or the test. He does not finish the notes, and will expect you to complete them on your own, which the incomplete sections will usually be what you homework wants you to do.
As someone that has taken his class semesters ago, these fake "good" reviews are only off-balancing a real rating. I have no idea how this guy still has a job. He's condescending, a perv, and will single you out for asking good questions. Listen to us and take another professor.
BEWARE. He is the hardest 123 math teacher. I am extremely good at math but will probably end with an A-. He makes things difficult and his lectures are SO BORING. When asking questions, he is extremely condescending and loud, awful learning environment. Doesn't give keys to online practice tests. Take any other teacher, safe yourself the trouble.
Terrible. If you ask a question you will be given a sarcastic answer in front of the whole class. You must work in groups to complete worksheets before quizzes at the end of class. No partial credit on quizzes (even if you know the concept but miss a negative per say) and test have irrelevant questions concerning the material.
Dont do it. Most condescending teacher ive ever had.
I had Self for my first semester of freshmen year and honestly, not sure why his reviews are so bad. Don't get me wrong, he's not the best professor there is, but I had worse in my first semester. An A is achievable, but you have to work for it. He is a man of respect- show him respect, and he'll show you respect by answering your questions fully
He will not stop teaching when the class ends. Keeps the whole class over every single time.
One of the most condescending professors I've ever had. He made me feel stupid every time I asked a question. His lectures are boring and don't schedule a class immediately after his because he continues to teach when class is over. Doesn't provide many examples of problems outside of class notes which barely prepare you for tests.
He's very condescending and makes sure everyone knows he's always right. Consistently keeps the class after time, so don't schedule a class right after his. Uses scare tactics and says even the Math Tutorial Center can't help and that you need to go to him for help, but when you go, he just makes you feel stupid and talks down to you.
Self is a caring and straight forward professor. He heavily encourages students to ask questions and come to office hours if they don't understand. Self is always willing to help and take extra time to explain things when asked.
I had him during all online, you use meadows videos anyways and the last month and a half of the semester I didn't even watch the lectures because the online exams were completion grade.
I would not have passed freshman math had it not been his willingness to work with me. You put forth the effort and he will match you every step of the way. I wish I had had more teachers like him. He spent tons of office hours with me. This was back in 03. Heck, I wish I had more people like him in my field.
Such a nice professor. Takes time out of his day to work with students if you just go to his office hours. Other than that, he is extremely straight to the point during his classes and will answer any questions that you have.
Prof. Self is actually the best human ever. He is incredibly understanding and willing to help. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and speaking with him. Make sure you do the notes before class and the homework but it isn't incredibly difficult. The course will be difficult if you don't put in the work though. Make friends with your group members!!!!
He was an okay professor. Very bad at time management, a few papers I didn't finish and he would tell me what to do on the ones I didn't get to (even though I knew how to do them). Just do the homework and go to class, you'll be fine.
With Bryan (or Chadwick same person) you can tell he is trying. He gives examples and worksheets and is willing to work with you to understand the information. However, the way he talks to students is rude and condescending. He thinks he is always right, very nitpicky, and very condescending. If you can handle that, you'll be fine. I was annoyed.
He is genuinely a nice and funny guy and wants you to succeed in the class. This class was not hard for me so maybe that's why I think so highly of him but as long as you are watching the lecture videos on time, you will do well in the class. Much better than taking the class under the instructor with a random TA.
Good guy, wants you to succeed, tough grader, a lot of homework, can pass if you actually go to class and try.
Professor Self is a good teacher and teaches the material in a way that is easy to understand. There is lots of homework, 3 big tests, and group work. He can sometimes be condescending but is overall a good guy. He is also easy to access outside of class. Take this professor if you want a pretty good grade and understand the knowledge in Math 123.
Professor Self keeps you engaged by posing questions every five seconds; active participation is key, or else he won't move on. He's harsh in grading, especially on quizzes and tests with true/false questions. Brace yourself for homework that will annoy you! Make friends for when you're confused!
He is a personable professor and will drop anything to help you. While the class is difficult, he provides many great resources for students! One of the better Finite Math Teachers!!
Professor Self is a great guy. You do pretty much have to teach yourself the material through lecture videos, but it is all reviewed in class. He's a very approachable guy, and there are plenty of opportunities to test yourself on the material before exams. This class is also a pass or fail, so it won't affect your GPA.
