He's a hard ass. Doesn't accept any kind of excuse no matter how dire. Rude but he knows his stuff.
HE MAKES STUDENTS FEEL STUPID. OFFERED US TO RETAKE TEST AND AFTER SOME OF US DID, HE STILL SAID WE DID TERRIBLE BY SUGGESTING THAT WE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO STUDY. HE IS PASSIONATE AND KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT, HOWEVER, HE IS HIGHLY OBNOXIOUS AND MEAN.
WARNING!!!! HORRIBLE PROFFESOR. Very rude, and unforgiving. Seems to have a ego problem. Exams are VERY hard and have to be all written out, no multiple choice, etc... Attendance is required. Avoid taking him at all cost.
HARD professor, nothing easy at all.He is really passionate but he is rude when it comes to helping students. And makes you feel stupid, take him at your own risk.
His tests are 50 questions , and are required to be at least 3 lines long. He gives you a general idea of whats on the test. So you stay up all night studying the book. One of my classmates said she got into a wreck and she gave him the police report, he replied you should have found another ride. I will never EVER suggest this professor to anyone.
Very good proffesor. Anyone who says he is mean has no sense of humor. He is more than happy to answer all questions. He jokes around will students but isn't serious. If you have a liberal attitude about everything then you'll just be offended and should keep yourself away from all people so your feelings dont get hurt. Test are a little difficult.
The hardest professor I've ever taken. Its unfortunate because hes very knowledgeable and knows his stuff but he teaches the class like thats your major. He has a sense of humor but his tests are AWFUL (NO multiple choice, all short answer) Ive never gotten anything below an A in college, in his class I got a C. The tests make the class dreadful.
Professor Shuler's teaching methods are clear and he tells you what he expects of you several times. You must have a coherent study plan for his course or you will do poorly on the exam. Do not study the weekend/night before. The tests are short answer, but if you have the writing comprehension of a fourth grader you should do fine.
Whatever you do, DON'T get this teacher. He seems really cool at first, and he is a cool guy, but he is a terrible teacher. You will not be prepared for any tests because he gets so off topic during class. If you really care about your classes and credits, find a different Humanities teacher.
I think he is a great professor! He really cares about his students and what he's teaching, although he can come off strict. He has a good sense of humor if your on his good side, and isn't afraid to tell students how he sees it. His tests can be difficult, but as long as you take notes and study (not the night before) you should do just fine!
Great professor. He is extremely passionate and only expects the best. Don't take this class for an "easy a" He is extremely helpful and funny. He makes the class fun. I didn't miss one class.
I loved this professor, Still to this day he is my favorite professor. I took him during the summer of last year, and if I could take another Humanities, I would want him as the professor again. He is passionate, he has humor, and honestly he gave people all the material on the test the class prior. Study and you will pass.
AWSOME Professor, magnifico : ), very thorough, knows his material inside and out. Keeps the class interesting.
this is a great professor, if you really want to learn, he will keep your attention for sure. very knowedgale, great sense of humor. Very trust worthy.
This is one of the best professor you can have. He is very cool, very kind. Respect yourself and your teacher, and he will treat you like you are his buddy. The class was such a blast. My whole class love him so much that we even had a party for him!! He is such a awesome friend and teacher. He helped my so much in so many ways. WONDERFUL TEACHER.
Very enthusiastic teacher! First few days I was pretty scared but if you're a good student and your're involved, he really takes notice and he'll become your favorite professor! Just don't slack off and do your absolute best for his assignments and he will definitely take notice and reward you.
This is a typical college professor who doesn't put up with nonsense. If you don't study and expect an Easy A, avoid this instructor. However, I still enjoyed his class. He makes you think outside of the box. For an idea of how tough his tests are, I worked my butt off and was SOO thrilled to get a C on my last two exams. Still enjoyed it.
He was very hard. The test were difficult and he was not clear on what he wanted from us. Other than that he was a nice guy.
I took Shuler during the 2014 Fall term and he had some tough tests and papers, however he is a very good teacher. He always has an interesting lecture where he tries really hard to make sure you know the material. He is not an easy professor so do your best. If you are looking for a challenge and some great lessons then take him!! :)
Prof Shuler's class is pretty simple. Show up, take notes, ask questions if you don't understand. He'll literally go over the test with you the day before, but it still won't be easy. His first test was only matching, 75+ possible answers. The next 2 were entirely short-answer. 2 research papers on ancient and fine art. You'll learn a lot.
Two research papers 15% of grade and three exams. "Interesting" class, he has his opinions. Come to class, takes lots of notes, don't take it personally if he seems moody, he likes participation and smart questions. He gave a verbal outline of the tests (which were easy). Don't be intimidated, put in the work and you can get an A.
Good teacher. He knows what he is talking about, his classes are pretty interesting and he has tons of stories from his trips to Africa. HOWEVER, he won't help you, you can't skip more than 3 classes, and not such a good person. I would'n take the class if I were you, unless it ia related to your major, in that case, the class will be perfect.
He's a great professor in all. You go to class, he lectures and you go home and study the section. For the most part the class is pretty easy. You have two major papers and through the year and a solid 5 quizzes/tests and that it. He's very down to earth, makes you laugh, and keeps you interested.
Bryan Shuler, Nice teacher very front about what he's looking for in his class, Just take good note and do your papers
I worked my butt off and got a B. I aim for all A's (brought my GPA down). He does not publish on canvas. Only plus is he's entertaining, funny, and at times charming. 70+question tests are confusing. (Interesting but challenging! He's not helpful.
Legitimately the WORST professor I've had. He's a very condescending person who makes you feel like an idiot if you ask any questions. I felt very uncomfortable asking any questions because I felt like I was going to get a extremely rude response back. Also, doesn't post anything regarding your grade on Canvas.
Is the man!!!!! He's pretty dope just gotta pay attention and has pretty cool background to him. Even now after being his student still comes up and says hello and discusses topics that have helped me in other class great professor would definitely take him again
Save money and just go on YouTube... 80% of the course is pointless YouTube and the rest is him attempting to show off. 2 papers and multiple quizzes that aren't announced online or in the syllabus. If you want to pay to listen to a middle aged man brag about his mediocre life and watch YouTube videos this is the best class there is!
Anyone complaining about this professor has clearly not done their research. A member of many communities and a real monster in humanities and science, he really knows what he's talking about because he's PHYSICALLY BEEN THERE. And if you haven't, then maybe you should sit down and take some notes, because it's probably going to be on the test.
Don't take him unless you are only taking two classes. This class is very stressful and has a lot of material. He does not give reviews for the tests.
This is literally the COOLEST professor I have ever had. He is HILARIOUS and relate his classes with real life situations. He motivates you and encourage you to do better. You do have to do work in this class but is not something that will occupy more than 2 hrs per week in your personal time if you want to get an A . Take him, you wont regret it.
He's a really good professor (a little strict). He's hilarious and knows what he's talking about. What keeps me from giving him the 5 is that he doesn't use canvas, which makes it harder for you to know how you're doing; and that he takes too long to give you the grades. Be careful with the quizzes (not multiple choice). He has a great class.
He's old school, but he also has a great sense of humor and always makes the class laugh. Don't expect to sleep through the class and get an A. This is not a blow off class and you will get out of the class what you put into it. He gives very in depth lectures with lots of detail. Don't sweat the papers either, just follow his instructions.
Easy to understand, he applied real world to the class room and is a bit sarcastic but its hilarious. The requirements were pretty straight forward and so was he.
His lectures are unorganized and go off topic quite often. Makes inappropriate comments during his off topic moments. And his exams are awful. He'd give us study guides but they only had some info you'd need. Lots of gotcha vocabulary questions. Would spend 2 class periods on an important moment and then wouldn't mention it anywhere on the exam.
I'm retired and taking classes because I enjoy learning. Professor Shuler did s great job keeping my interest as well as the interest of younger students. He is perceived as interested, interesting and fair. I will take other classes from him.
Listen, you won't realize what's going on when you take this class. The lectures seem monotonous and repetitive at first ... but you'll quickly figure out that this guy knows what he's talking about. The depth of knowledge delivered is huge. I figured this would be an easy class, but Shuler made me work for it. I learned a lot in this class.
I have found this Professor one of the most knowledgeable in this area of study. He been has to the places you learn about to study himself. Gives very accurate information in what I feel great sense of humor lecture's . Cares about his students, gives extra credit , wants the best for you. I personally will take his other courses.
This was a great class that challenged you to engage and dig in. Professor was tough but very fair in that if you attend class you'll be well prepared for exam content. Definitely a thorough command of subject and very engaging. He cares about his subject and conveys that with energy. Great class though tough!
Professor Shuler is an outstanding professor with great passion for the Humanities discipline. While difficult he is fair and willing to work with you granted to are in class and work hard. Research papers are required and will definitely help prepare you for University level study. His classes have made USF upper level courses a breeze.
Great professor, let me tell you the down side. Will give exams which will fail you unless your Bryan Shuler. " An A in this class will be shown through hardwork and effort into this class", Yet he does not give us a study guide and exams are written not multiple choices. Expect to write 7 pages on 1 painting with no sources on the web. "Pick any"
Prof. Shuler is perhaps one of the best professors I have even had the pleasure of studying under. He is deeply passionate about the subject matter, and more approachable than almost any other professor in this or other departments. His willingness to help is unfailing, and he will do whatever it takes to help a student in need.
Shuler has teaching down to a science. His lectures are interesting, he takes time to incorporate lessons that apply to modern day, and tells you exactly what will be on the exams. His essay will take a lot of work; he's specific with what he wants, so I would start as early as you can. Overall, I would take this teacher again. He's very present.
Don't be scared by the bad comments. He is a great professor. However, you have to go to class and take notes, I barely used the book. He also gives extra points.
When I first joined this class it seemed very interesting. How ever as soon as the drop/add date was done, he just let down on a bunch of work. Almost as if he has no idea that we have other classes that give us work too. And the paper he assigns are far too long! 5 PAGES on a really specific topic ?!? Youre out of your mind.
Great professor! He has quite a character, so he may seem really strict. However, you can tell he really cares for his students who try their best. If you plan on missing class often, do not take this class. He lectures and you will need the notes for the exams. Exams aren't the easiest but he does post study guides. Amazing lectures too!
He was a great professor. I loved the class and although sometimes he can be a little lecture heavy, hes very upfront with whats due and when. There are no surprises. Hes a great guy and made learning fun. Would take a class with him again for sure.
Without a doubt the smartest professor I have had at HCC. Knows and obviously enjoys what he teaches. Inspires students to travel and try new things. Lecture and note heavy, but the lectures are enjoyable. Pretty difficult test.
Professor Shuler is a great professor and treats you as part of his college family. He understands people have lives outside of school and accommodates accordingly if necessary, along with giving you what to expect on his tests. His syllabus tells you everything you need to pass. Make sure to attend his class or you can forget about passing.
Shuler is a difficult professor to handle. I would not take this class unless it is related to your major because it very hard. The tests are stressful to study for, notes are heavy, and he is not clear with what he wants most of the time unless it's on the syllabus which you have to check constantly. He is not much help and he doesn't post grades.
I worked really hard for this class and I received a B . Do not take professor shuler unless your major requires it .HE DOES NOT POST ANY GRADES ON CANVAS.
I took professor Shuler in spring 2019 and I'm a huge fan of his. He is a dedicated teacher and he seems like he would be cool o hangout with. He knows about everything; I can hear him talk for ever. I also love his style!
His class is easy but he pretends to be "woke" about Asian culture surprisingly. This class really made me feel like was learning about how to culture appropriate for over an hour rather than appreciating and learning about Asian cultures as an outsider. What's worse is his attendance was mandatory so you had to sit through the fake wokeness.
Take another class. Unclear and unapproachable.
Take someone else if you can. He picks favorites and doesn't have any clear grading criteria, is often passive aggressive, and generally difficult to deal with. He once docked points from my assignment for doing it a few hours before it's due, with the key being me turning it in before it's due. He's often very snarky, and "woke". Take someone else
Very funny teacher
Very sarcastic and makes the lectures fun and interactive. You get to present in class which is very meaningful to hear from others. Great professor! You won't regret taking this class, he is very lenient. Just do your work and pay attention in class. He always gives you a heads up for quizzes and gives a summary to what it'll consist of.
Professor Shuler was so entertaining, and I had him for two different classes. His lectures always tie back into personal experiences he had. While there are the many discussion boards that have to be done in order to keep up with the class, its relatively easy and makes learning about different cultures so much more interesting.
This is one of the worst proffers thats Ive ever had. Literally didnt care that I had Covid and that my grandmother and uncle died from cancer. He didnt give me and makeup days.
Professor Shuler is great! He's hilarious & he talks most of the class with the occasional YouTube video. He's well-traveled and you can tell he's very passionate about the arts. Just make sure you put some effort and study his announcements on canvas and turn in the two required papers and you'll pass. Also no final exam and gives extra credit
HILARIOUS RESPECTED AMAZING LECTURES GIVES GOOD FEEDBACK INSPIRATIONAL wonderful teacher beautiful lecture I would love to take another class with him if I have to I would definitely recommend him.
The test was hard. you have to study and try hard in this class to pass with an A. Asian humanities weren't that interesting in my opinion. The class was alright, not my favorite.
Professor Shuler is a bit of a tough grader. His notes are incredibly heavy, when printed out it could end up being 7 pages long with then pair of notes which luckily can be 2 or just 3 pages long, so watch out as his tests are incredibly note heavy. He will offer extra credit for exams and essays by either making presentations or showing skills.
Listen if you are taking Hum1020 pick a different teacher I promise they are better teacher then this teacher was not in ease in his class also this class will not be a easy to pass find a different teacher i promise they are better teacher to teach this course.
He gives snarky responses and goes off-topic every time in his lectures, when it comes to posting reviews he gives over 7 pages worth of information and then the day before the tests tells you what to study for at the last minute. Hes not a helpful professor AT ALL as he tends show off more in his lectures than actual lessons, take someone else plz
great professor, Professor Shuler's lectures are very good and I learned a lot from him. He gives study guides for the tests, there are 5 tests, and 2 long essays. for the tests, you NEED to study the guides. The 2 essays are for a museum review and a live performance. The only thing is that the quizzes may take a long time to be graded.
Responds incredibly slow to emails. He gives "minimum requirements", aka if you follow his instructions, you get a C. He wants you to just know that you should be aiming to overachieve in order to get an A. Reading is boring but easy amounts per week. Don't take the class at all if it doesn't interest you, it won't be an easy A.
He is a great teacher and very knowledgeable but he grades quite harshly, there is a minimum requirement that will only get you a C. There is a huge research paper with lots of requirements and it must be very specific do not leave it to the end. Not many assignments or exams so that is nice. This is only for honors though. Not too bad he is funny.
It doesn't matter if your answers are correct, if he doesn't understand it, he won't grade it. Which I believe is horrible, especially if that's how I write.
Prof Shuler is a patient, brilliant man. Follow his directions and you will not fail his class. He clearly tells you what s going to be on the test. Write it down and study it. He does not tolerate cell phones in class so put it away or you may be kicked out of class. Otherwise, he is caring and respectful, and very knowledgeable.
Class is easy but you are required to read 3 African novels on top of having a textbook.
This guy is actually really good. He seams harsh at first. However, he is fair! He clearly tells you whats going to be on the tests so you know what to study for, his lectures are very thorough. He does not tolerate crap, or cell phone usage in class. If you follow his instructions, you really should not fail his class unless you just don't care.
Professor Shuler is extremely tough. His research papers are no joke, and his tests are all fill in the blank. He saw i was struggling and allowed me to retake the third test which saved my grade, and he made our final exam extremely easy. (helpful studying tip, voice record his lectures). He's an amazing man who pushed me, and i truly respect him.
Don't take any of his classes unless you love failure
Only does lectures. Tests are all handwritten not multiple choice. Is not lenient in terms of anything. Once marked me absent because I was quite literally 2 minutes late. Has a research paper and would not let you use ANY online sources, only Books or e-books from library databases. Grades extremely tough. Is impossible to communicate with.
I took like 4 of his classes while getting my AA. I'm now in the process of getting my master's, and Prof Schuler's classes are still some of the most memorable classes I've taken. Everyone who doesn't like him is probably lazy and didn't take notes or pay attention. All tests are straight out of the lectures, and he tells you exactly what to do.
Tough grader make sure to turn in all your assignments.your assignments count as your attendance so if miss more then three of them he gives a zero for attendance then makes sure that the only grade can get is nothing higher then a D He is not nice at all when comes asking for an extension or needing more time on something, doesn't care
This professor claimed that I used ai for a project that requires me to visit a museum and write a review on a specific exhibit I find interesting. He is very unprofessional and obviously doesn't care. Horrible professor he doesn't deserve this job.
I am on pace to fail the first class of my life as a sophomore in college. This teacher is an insanely difficult grader, test are pulled from what he said in class and often look nothing like the study guide. The tests are only write-ins as well. My friend received 50% off on the first paper of the year for not using in text citiaions. Dont enroll.
i hate this class just take the music class instead of this this dude is snarky and instead of giving us proper notes for our test rambles on of art. dont get me wrong thats fine but give us notes to know what were doing at least. When he talks its like he has a hugeeee ego and the final projects he assigns is a complete joke for a class.
He is actually the most conceited, out-of-touch elitist I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. His lectures are badly organized, his tests are all write-in, and attendance is 25% of your grade. His poor teaching skills are not nearly as bad as his personality. He constantly singles out and humiliates students to feel better about himself.
I disliked him so much, he assigns a lot of unnecessary work. If you get stuck with him, good luck.
I'll be honest, Professor Shuler is not easy to please and is very strict but he is also very knowledgeable and educated and nice. As long as you treat him with respect, he'll treat you with respect too. If you're looking for an easy class with multiple choice exams then this is not for you. You will also have a few multiple pages essays to do.
I coasted with an A until he accused me of using AI on my final. I told him I could prove it was my original work and he refused to even MEET with me, calling me "obnoxious." I had to go over his head to the Dean to receive credit. He's never been humbled by a woman smarter than him, and resorts to alleging misconduct whenever his ego is bruised.
He is tough! But if you show that you care and do everything you can get an A. Weekly discussions based on the book (never gives 100%), one big research paper and one big project. He also asks students to bring PRINTED articles every week and discuss about it. You might get lost in his classes but don't worry because it will make sense at times.
Worst of worst simply don't take it and save yourself
This guy genuinely is just rude and nasty to anyone he doesn't favor. He loves his male students and gives them plenty of grace but gives the women of his class no breathing room. Marks people off as absent if they're present or one minute late and that's half the classes grades. Too much to say too little words. DON'T TAKE HIM.
This professor is a kind guy, but his work is very rigorous. He has requirements of going to places. If you have little to no money to spare do no take the class. he has a lot of writing requirements and is very strict when it comes to grading. he also only allows 3 absences and if u go over you will lose 20% of the class grade.
2 essays, 1 book you have to write, and 4 crazy hard quizzes. You can't skip his class, and worst of all, you must have EXACT notes from his lectures. If you miss any notes, you will be annihilated by the quiz. The class is generally unfair. He's alright as a person, but probably one of the worst choices for a humanities class.
I was skeptical at first because of all the bad reviews, but honestly, this class was a breeze! The workload and assignments were very manageable.
This prof was not good, do not take him. His attendance policy is horrible, if you miss more than 3 days you get 20% off of your grade. I have never failed a class before and this was my first ever fail. I did good on every test, essay and project and I failed because of his attendance policy.
The type of professor to say if you did everything he asked on an assignment you'd get a C. Can't be a minute late to class or you're absent for that day. Quizzes are difficult and there is 3 essays two of which entails going to a museum and a play. Not an easy going person in the slightest. Try your best and get a C. Go above and beyond for an A/B
